AQUATIC CENTER Located at 411 4th Street NE, this facility offers a zero-depth entry pool, 150 foot water slide, six racing lanes, 1 and 3 meter boards, sunning deck and grassy areas.

Modern handicap accessible changing facilities, concessions and a children’s aquatic playground are available. It’s the “cool” place to be on a hot summer day. Daily admission rates: adults/students (age 7 and over) $3; youth (birth to 6 years) $1. Phone: 319-238-8160

CITY PARK AND CAMPGROUND

CITY PARK: Located on South Frederick Avenue this park is frontage property to a 55-acre artificial lake named Lake Oelwein. The park offers picnic tables, open play area, playground equipment, tennis court, sand volleyball, horseshoe courts, restroom facilities, modern and primitive camping, and dump station. The park offers “no wake” boating access to Lake Oelwein.

BOATING: Kayak/paddleboard rental $10 for 1 hour, $30 for two or more for four hours per craft, and $35 for four hours per craft. Phone City Hall, 319-283-5440 for information.

PARKS SYSTEM The city maintains nine parks and recreational areas containing more than 173 acres of land. The city currently offers nine shelters that are available for rental among several other smaller shelters throughout the parks. The trail system currently offers 3.64 miles of walking/biking trails throughout the city.

OELWEIN — The Williams Center for the Arts Director Doug McFarlane is shouting a big “Hooray!” as he announces The Center is officially opened for the 2021-22 season of performances.

“The Williams Center for the Arts will open

for audience capacity of 775 persons. The guidance from the CDC (Center for Disease Control) will be followed and everyone must wear a mask,” McFarlane said.

There has been limited usage of the Center since last summer, but usage is now unrestricted, he said. Board of Directors (Williams Center, Inc.) approved permission to remove the restrictions on seating capacity at the Center

immediately. Approvals for usage still must be given by both the Director McFarlane, and the Tech Director Dick Klapperich.

The Williams Center for the Arts will kick off an artist series with a lively event, “The Boy Band Night,” on Saturday, Aug. 28. Any individual tickets that were purchased a year ago will still be honored. These top-tier musicians offer a Boy Band tribute to all the favorite groups

WILLIAMS CENTER for the Arts of that genre including Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, NKOTB, One Direction, Jonas Brothers, plus some surprises. Signature choreography adds to the musical and visual experience of this nationally touring act from Chicago.

Shades of Bublé will be presented Saturday, Sept. 18, 7 p.m.

This is a three-man tribute to the music of Michael Bublé. Shades of Bublé brings the swinging standards, and pop hits of the artist to the stage with exciting harmonies, smooth choreography and plenty of charm.

“Simply Queen” a tribute to rock legends Queen, will be performed Saturday, Oct. 9. Billed as Canada’s Premier Queen Tribute, Simply Queen performs all the

iconic songs that made Queen one of the most legendary rock bands of all time. The all-live show, with attention to detail, captures the amazing Queen experience, “Guaranteed to Blow Your Mind.”

The Williams Center will forgo performances through the holidays to help free the calendar for school performances.

Then, on Saturday, March 5, area attendees will be treated to the music of ABBA with a performance of “Abba Mania,” including a special tribute to Cher. Abba Mania has been wowing audiences since its formation in 1999 in London’s West End, re-creating the ABBA phenomenon for fans all over the world.

The season wraps up Saturday,

April 9, with “The Highway Men,” a tribute to the music of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash. The audience will relive the magic of one of the greatest country music supergroups of all time, with this musical tribute to three original “outlaws” of their time. One hit after another, “Ring of Fire,” “Dukes of Hazard,” “On the Road Again,” and many more, are sung just as if attendees were seeing the original band perform.

It’s the perfect wrap up of a great musical mix in this artist series.

Director of the Center Doug McFarlane notes that it has been a brutal 13 months for the Center as well as for most venues all over the country.

“We think the artist series line-

up will provide something for everyone,” he said.

The Center, which opened in 2003, includes a state-of-the-art auditorium, a multi-functional lobby, sound/light booth, a spacious work area, several spacious dressing rooms, and multi-level storage. It is used by various civic groups as well as performing arts throughout the Oelwein Schools, and is often selected as a venue for contests.

GROUT Museum

GROUT MUSEUM A GATEWAY TO LOCAL HISTORY AND THE STARS

The Grout Museum of History and Science features permanent and continually changing exhibitions of area history, and the only public planetarium in Northeast Iowa, which holds weekly shows.

It’s also home to the James, Robert and Dick McKinstry Funded Library, northeast Iowa’s largest genealogical reference library. The library also contains an archival collection numbering 21,617 maps, photographs, oral histories, audio/video tapes, clippings and documents relating to the Cedar Valley.

The museum is centrally located in Waterloo at 503 South St. Waterloo.

The museum, was founded by Henry Grout, a Waterloo native who was curi-

ous about the world around him. That curiosity, along with his generosity, has been on display for generations of inquisitive museum visitors.

You can see Grout’s interest in everything from his occupations in the 1880s through his retirement in 1918. Railroad worker. Farmer. Miner. Realtor. Traveling salesman. State legislator.

He loved to travel, to collect reminders of places he visited, and to share his finds with children in the community.

By the time of his death, Grout had collected over 2,000 objects. His will established an endowment and named trustees to care for his collection, which was displayed for many years at the local YMCA (now the River Plaza building on 4th Street). The current building was completed in 1956 and opened to the public as a not-for-profit museum.

Allamakee County

EFFIGY MOUNDS

151 Iowa Highway 76, Harpers Ferry The mounds preserved here are considered sacred by many Americans, especially the Monument’s 20 culturally associated American Indian tribes. A visit offers opportunities to contemplate the meanings of the mounds and the people who built them. The 200 plus American Indian mounds are located in one of the most picturesque sections of the Upper Mississippi River Valley. The park is located just north of Marquette, and features 14 miles of hiking trails and a visitor center.

ANDERSON ADDITION TO CUTSHALL AREA

1727 Baxter Avenue, Jesup The area is located four miles north of Jesup on the west side of Highway V62.

The Anderson Addition is 24 acres of natural area connected to the Cutshall Area.

Visitors explore the reclaimed prairie and forests and walk along the Wapsi to bird watch or just enjoy nature. Features include stream fishing, hunting, and nature appreciation.

BEARBOWER SAND PRAIRIE

1777 Benton Buchanan Avenue, Brandon Small clumps of trees dot the sand prairie at Bearbower and offer refuge to singing birds and sleeping deer. The 40 acres are home to all sorts of wildlife and offer a unique type of habitat that is uncommon in eastern Iowa. The park is located two miles west of Highway 150, off the Benton Buchanan County Line Road, and features hunting and nature appreciation.

BLAZING STAR PRAIRIE

3022 Nolen Avenue, Rowley Blazing Star Prairie gives visitors the opportunity to experience 7.5 acres of natural prairie similar to those the first Iowa settlers encountered. Diverse plant life gives many different animals needed shelter and food and renews the original features of the Iowa landscape. Nature lovers can walk through this prairie to watch birds, take photos, observe wildflowers, find interesting insects, and much more. The prairie is located near

Rowley two miles east on D47 and south one mile. Features include hunting and nature appreciation.

BOIES BEND AREA

2465 278th Street, Quasqueton Boies Bend Area sits just west of Quasqueton along the Wapsipinicon River.

Breathtaking scenery and easy access from both the river and the road make this park a favorite to citizens of Buchanan County. Features include stream fishing, hunting, picnicking, hiking trails, nature appreciation, fire pits, primitive camping, and vault toilets.

BRYANTSBURG PRAIRIE RESERVE

1448 Bryantsburg Boulevard, Hazleton Bryantsburg may be small with only 1.5 acres, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in diversity. Shooting star, wild roses, asters, daisies, and spiderwort are just a few of the wildflowers that can be found blooming in this natural prairie that also supports numerous pollinators and songbirds. The prairie is located two miles south of Hazleton on Highway 150, and features nature appreciation.

2862 220th Street, Winthrop Trails wind through the woodlands, small ponds, and Buffalo Creek. Wood ducks, Canada geese, and numerous amphibians call these wetlands home. Deer, raccoon, and other small mammals frequent the surrounding 80 acres of forest. The area is located just east of Winthrop. Features include stream fishing, hunting, hiking trails, nature appreciation, picnicking, shelter with electricity, fire pits, primitive camping, and vault toilets.

BUFFALO CREEK WILDLIFE AREA

3217 270th Street, Winthrop The Buffalo Creek Wildlife Area is located in southeast Buchanan County just east of Quasqueton. Its 60 acres offer scenic views and a variety of plant and animal life with great hunting and mushrooming opportunities. Features include stream fishing, hunting, and nature appreciation.

2611 Quasqueton Diagonal Boulevard, Independence Cedar Rock is a park with an estate featuring a Frank Lloyd Wright house, tours, and a visitor center with exhibits. When Iowa businessman Lowell Walter died in August of 1981, he and his wife, Agnes, left their dream home, Cedar Rock, to the Iowa Conservation Commission and the people of Iowa. Designed by the famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the residence lies on a limestone bluff overlooking the Wapsipinicon River.

CORTRIGHT WILDLIFE AREA

1380 River Road Boulevard, Jesup Cortright Wildlife Area provides guests with multiple natural areas to enjoy. The 190 acres include ponds, wooded areas, open fields, and more. Turtles and frogs fill the ponds, birds can be seen throughout the wooded areas and along the river, and animals like deer, raccoons, squirrels, and

mice occasionally present themselves to the attentive watcher. The park is located northeast of Jesup and one mile southeast of Littleton. Features include stream and river fishing, lake and pond fishing, hunting, hiking trails, nature appreciation, and picnicking.

CRUMBACHER WILDLIFE AREA

1498 240th Street, Independence Visitors to Crumbacher Wildlife Area are never at a loss for something new to do.

The large prairie and forested areas provide hours of enjoyment for hiking or bird watching during the summer months and plenty of upland bird, turkey, and deer hunting in the winter. Beautiful landscapes and breathtaking scenery can be found throughout the 368 acres this area fills no matter the season. In addition, the wetland areas at Crumbacher provide habitat to a large variety of amphibians and waterfowl that are rarely found in other areas of Buchanan County. Major

trails remain from year to year, but each year additional firebreaks are mowed in varying places that also make great hiking or riding routes. The park is located in western Buchanan County south of Highway 20 and along Lime Creek, almost equally southeast of Jesup and southwest of Independence. Features include hunting, hiking trails, nature appreciation, and equestrian trails.

CUTSHALL AREA

1677 Baxter Avenue, Jesup This property has 85 acres of deep woods and open land that give the Cutshall Area variety that can keep the whole family interested all day. The park is located on the Wapsipinicon River in northwest Buchanan County, north of Jesup along Highway V62. Features include stream fishing, hunting, nature appreciation, picnicking, and shelter.

FAIRBANK FEN

1050 Dillon Avenue, Fairbank One of two fens in Buchanan County, this distinctive wetland is a great way to gain a diverse understanding of Iowa’s natural history. Wildlife make a great use of the 40 acres for all of their habitat needs and a variety of wetland plants ensure an ever-changing landscape. The area is locat-

ed southeast of Fairbank and south of 281 on Dillon Avenue. Features include hunting, picnicking, and nature appreciation.

FONTANA PARK

1883 125th Street, Hazleton Fontana Park contains 134 acres that offer many opportunities to visitors. It is also home to the Fontana Interpretive Nature Center. The nature center was built with conservation in mind, making use of local resources and energy-efficient technology. Exhibits in the Fontana Interpretive Nature Center helps visitors understand how we can “make our home in a living environment.” As visitors use the nature center they see and touch natural objects, play games, and find answers to questions.

In addition to the nature center, visitors to Fontana Park can enjoy the live wildlife display that features animals native to Iowa. Animals in the display include orphaned, injured, or human-raised wildlife that can no longer live in the wild. Without human care they would perish. It is our belief that the animals displayed here serve a valuable purpose to educate the public about Iowa’s native wildlife and the need to protect and respect them.

ture Center are located just nine miles north of Independence on Highway 150.

Features include the Interpretive Nature Center and indoor displays, an outdoor wildlife display, camping, cabins, fishing, picnicking, fire pits, reservable shelter buildings with electricity, hiking trails, and a playground.

GUY GROVER TIMBER AND TREE PLANTINGS

2720 Nolen Avenue, Rowley The Guy Grover Timber and Tree Plantings trail winds through several distinct features. The quarry pond near the trailhead provides shoreline fishing. The trail runs southeast along a tree planting to a savannah opening dominated by prairie grasses and flowers. The trail then leads to another tree planting. As the trail curves north, it passes through the upland forest and downhill to the Wapsipinicon River.

A signed gate marks the east boundary of the West Parcel. Visitors can continue past the gate, but must stay on the trail.

Veering from the trail means trespassing on private land. Signs mark the East Parcel entrance. A tree planting exists at the East Parcel entrance. Visitors are welcome to walk throughout the East Parcel woodland. Guy Grover Timber and Tree Plant-

ings is managed by the Buchanan County Conservation Board.

The forest, tree plantings, and water resources are here for all to enjoy due to the generosity of Guy and Shirley Grover.

A local farmer and conservationist, Guy Grover dedicated his time and resources to make this the wonderful resource it is today. In 2007, the Grovers made sure these efforts would be protected in the future by placing the land in a conservation easement with the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. In 2011, the Grovers donated the area to the Buchanan County Conservation Board as a place for the public to enjoy and learn about nature.

The Grovers acquired this property in 1988, and soon began enhancing the natural features of the property. Pasture and crop lands were converted to trees.

Most of the tree plantings are alternating rows of conifers and hardwoods (oaks, walnuts, and others). Older plantings date back to the early 1990’s, and now are large trees. The conifer rows shaded the sides of the hardwoods, resulting in trees growing straight and tall toward overhead sunlight. During an eight year period, Guy and his brother Max planted approximately 30,000 trees.

The area is located three miles west of Quasqueton. Features include stream fishing, lake and pond fishing, hunting, hiking trails, and nature appreciation.

HAM MARSH

1747 Indiana Avenue, Independence Ham Marsh offers 54 acres that include a glacial marsh, sedge meadow, and a reconstructed prairie that offer fantastic glimpses of waterfowl and other bird life especially during spring waterfowl migration and summer nesting seasons. Ham Marsh is located north of Independence and west of Highway 150 and features hunting, hiking trails, nature appreciation, and an observation blind for wildlife watching.

HODGES AND NORTH WILDLIFE AREA 1097 240th Street, Jesup

Hodges and North Wildlife Area’s 66 acres of open land are still evolving from their prior quarry operation. Prairie was returned to much of the property after it was acquired in 2001 and the diversity continues to improve. A quarry pond in the northeast corner attracts many frogs and other wildlife. The area is located south of Jesup along 240th Street and features hunting, nature appreciation, and picnicking.

IRON BRIDGE WOODLAND AND RIVER ACCESS

2707-2 Nolen Avenue, Independence Iron Bridge Access not only offers boat ramp access to a beautiful stretch of the Wapsi River Trail, it also offers access to a piece of Buchanan County history. The Iron Bridge at the access is one of only a few like it remaining in the state. It was originally part of a bridge through Independence but was moved to its current location when the new bridge was built.

Visitors to Iron Bridge Access can read about the bridge and learn a little history along the way.

JAKWAY PARK

2791 136th Street, Aurora Jakway Park, south of Aurora, is developed on the east side of Buffalo Creek with a campground, shower house and dump station. Modern restrooms are available, and the concrete shower house also serves as a storm shelter. The picturesque, shaded campground features stately oak trees and campers can walk the adjacent self-guided trails and stop in the wildlife observation blind at the old quarry pond. Campers and visitors can try fishing for small fish in the creek or in the old quarry pond, walk to the playground, shelter house, and historic Richardson-Jakway House and grounds.

Hunting is not allowed on the developed east side of Buffalo Creek. West of Buffalo Creek, the largest section of the 315acre park is managed for timber stand improvement, hunting, equestrian riding, nature appreciation and hiking.

KOUTNY POND/HOFFMAN WOODS

1544-2 330th Street, Brandon With lots of open space, this area offers endless possibilities to sportsmen and other nature lovers. Prairie covers much of the west portion of the 106 acres and is home to pheasant, mice and all manner of birds and insects. The east portion is a largely wooded section along Bear Creek. A walking trail surrounds the centrally located pond and a boat ramp gives water lovers easy access to many different non-gas boating options.

The park is located southeast of Brandon, and just south of Highway 283. Features include lake/pond fishing, boating, hunting, a hiking trail, nature appreciation, and vault toilets.

LIME CREEK AREA

3205 Brandon Diagonal Boulevard, Brandon Lime Creek Park has a nice, peaceful campground. Not far from the Cedar Valley Trail, campers at Lime Creek may want to bring their bicycles. As its name implies, Lime Creek meanders through the park. A playground and shelter house are available right in the campground.

Camping Fees at Lime Creek are $14/ night with electricity or $8/night without electricity. No reservations are taken for camping at Lime Creek. The park is located just northeast of Brandon. Features include stream fishing, hunting, nature appreciation, picnicking, shelter with electricity, modern and primitive camping, a playground, and vault toilets.

MICKEY FOX AREA

1701 Benson Avenue, Jesup The Mickey Fox area is 97 acres filled with many different plant and animal species to observe and enjoy. The area is located north of Jesup one mile east of Highway V62, with access off of Benson Avenue. Features include stream fishing, hunting, and nature appreciation. Open year-round 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

NIBECK WILDLIFE PRESERVE

the southwest side of the C57 bridge and provides accessible access to the creek.

With 100 acres available this area is one of the larger preserves in Buchanan County.

Paddlers can travel to or from Fontana Park to Otter Creek Wildlife Area and the wetland there. Access to the area is off of Benton Street W or Highway C57 at the western edge of Hazleton. Features include stream fishing and nature appreciation.

OTTER CREEK ROADSIDE PARK

1627 Quonset Avenue, Aurora Patton Prairie is a 45-acre native prairie managed to maintain and preserve an example of Iowa’s natural prairie areas. As such, visitors are encouraged to wander the area as no trails are maintained. The park is located southwest of Aurora off of Quonset Avenue. Features include hunting and nature appreciation.

303 North Street E, Hazleton Taking a hike through the Nibeck wildlife preserve is both a unique and educational experience. With a marsh area as well as forests and hiking trails Nibeck’s 25 acres are full of many different opportunities.

The preserve is located on the northeast corner of Hazleton near Highway 150 with access off of North Street in Hazleton.

Features include a hiking trail and nature appreciation.

1850 Highway 281 Hazleton The Otter Creek Roadside Park is the northernmost of the Buchanan County parks. With Otter Creek running through it and a small pond available, this 13-acre park provides enough activities to hold its own with the bigger parks in the area.

Picnic tables and a short hiking trail are available to visitors. The park is located south of Oelwein on Highway 281. Features include stream fishing, lake/pond fishing, hiking trails, nature appreciation, and picnicking.

OTTER CREEK WILDLIFE AREA

2653 Girl Scout Boulevard, Independence Pine Creek Area encompasses the property where Pine Creek flows into the Wapsipinicon River waterfront along both streams. A large ephemeral pool becomes an open wetland as it dries after periodic flooding. The 40 acres are filled with plants and wildlife of interest in all seasons. The area is located northwest of Quasqueton off of Girl Scout Boulevard.

Songbirds, including many warbler species, utilize the forest for feeding and cover during spring migration. The preserve is located west of Quasqueton off of 262nd Avenue. Its main feature is nature appreciation.

ROWLEY FEN

2877 Lucas Avenue, Rowley Rowley Fen is a very unique natural wetland area. One of two fens managed

by Buchanan County, this area is full of plants, wildlife, and birds for nature enthusiasts to enjoy. A fen is different from other wetlands because the ground water flows constantly to the surface directly out of the bedrock. This creates an alkaline water source that causes plant matter to take longer to decompose and results in mounds of peat forming on top of the water. The peat mounds have a springy, spongy feel to them that is a rare treat to walk on. If you visit this area make sure to wear shoes that you don’t mind getting wet. The fen is located south of Independence off Highway 150 and east on Highway D47 two miles, just northwest of the town of Rowley. Features include hunting and nature appreciation.

SAND CREEK AREA

SCHNEIDER-HIENECKROWE AREA

3149-2 Stewart Avenue, Quasqueton A well-preserved natural area, SchneiderHieneck-Rowe includes a marsh that is home to many different amphibians and reptiles. The 20 acres are criss-crossed with deer trails and filled with a large variety of different plant life including putty root orchid and invasive garlic mustard (we welcome volunteers to help pull this invasive). Bird watchers, nature photographers, and all other nature lovers will find hours of enjoyment in this beautiful area.

The area is located southeast of Quasqueton, three miles south of Highway D47, and is diagonally adjacent to the Hoover Area. Its main feature is nature appreciation.

THREE ELMS AREA AND ACCESS

2041 Three Elms Park Road, Independence This beautiful area holds 75 wooded acres that border the Wapsipinicon River. River access is abundant at this site, which has a concrete boat ramp and fishing area. Dirt mountain biking trails are maintained here with signage. Annual 3-D archery shoots are hosted here by the Wapsi Bowhunters. There are also open areas with picnic tables that are ideal for picnicking.

The area is located in Independence, just off Highway 150 on Three Elms Park Road.

Features include stream fishing, boating, river access, an archery range, hiking trails, nature appreciation, picnicking, a shelter with electricity, vault toilets, and bike trails.

VANLANINGHAM WILDLIFE PRESERVE

1750 Pine Creek Avenue, Aurora This small preserve holds a variety of plant and wildlife species, and is located northwest of Winthrop off of Pine Creek Avenue. Its main feature is nature appreciation.

FRIEDEN PARK

16723 Chariot Road, Elkader This small park offers rough camping, canoe access, and picnicking. The area is located northwest of Elkader along the Turkey River, opposite Big Springs Trout Hatchery.

JOY SPRINGS 37771 Alpha Avenue, Strawberry Point This park covers 90 acres, and is used mostly by trout-seeking anglers. The park is located just southwest of Strawberry Point and offers primitive camping with walk in access only.

MOTOR MILL HISTORIC SITE

955 East Street, Lamont Located on the Northeast edge of Lamont, this property encompasses 30 wooded acres that border the Maquoketa River. Trails are maintained for hiking, nature enjoyment and hunting. The area is located on the northeast edge of Lamont off of North Street. Features include stream fishing, hunting, hiking trails, and nature appreciation.

23002 Grain Road, Elkader Motor Mill is a historic site on the National Register of Historic Places. The site is located about seven miles east of Elkader, and features a six story limestone mill, cooperage, ice house, inn, and stable made of limestone. The total site covers 155 acres and has two trails.

Clayton County

BLOODY RUN 29857 128th Street, Marquette Bloody Run is a 135 acre park located west of Marquette off of Highway 18. Features include primitive camping, fishing, a trout stream, and undeveloped areas in the rear of the park.

BUCK CREEK 30286 232nd Street, Garnavillo Buck Creek consists of 103 acres of primitive camping, picnicking, fishing, and forested areas. The area is located three miles east of Highway 52 on 232nd Street, just northeast of Garnavillo.

FRENCHTOWN PARK 26254 Mississippi Road, Guttenberg Frenchtown Park is a small park located along the Mississippi River, three miles north of Guttenberg. The park offers boat access to the Mississippi.

OSBORNE PARK 29862 Osborne Road, Elkader Osborne Park is the site of the Clayton County Conservation Board offices, and features a native wildlife exhibit, walking trails, open shelters, a nature and welcome center, and a gift shop. The park is located about five miles south of Elkader on Highway 13.

TURKEY RIVER PARK 20195 Strawberry Point Road, Elkader This small park is located just off Highway 13 on the south edge of Elkader. The park offers picnicking, fishing, and canoe access. The park is also part of the trail system that connects Pony Hollow to the city of Elkader.

PIKES PEAK STATE PARK 32264 Pikes Peak Road, McGregor Pikes Peak is one of the most photographed places in Iowa, and is rich in natural, cultural, and historical resources, and famed for its majestic views of the Mississippi River. The park is located about three miles south of McGregor, and offers picnicking, an open picnic shelter,

two open gazebo shelters, a playground, a scenic overlook, trail viewing platforms, camping, modern shower and restroom facilities, a dump station, 11.5 miles of trails, mountain biking, wildflower viewing, wildlife viewing, and bird watching.

Delaware County

BACKBONE STATE PARK 1347 129th Street, Dundee Backbone State Park is Iowa’s oldest state park, dedicated in 1919. Located in the valley of the Maquoketa River, it is approximately three miles south of Strawberry Point. It is named for a narrow and steep ridge of bedrock carved by a loop of the Maquoketa River originally known as the Devil’s Backbone. Features include camping, hiking trails, bike trails, swimming, boating, fishing, trout fishing, climbing, cabins, picnic shelters, and restrooms.

BAILEY’S FORD PARK 2379 Jefferson Road, Manchester This is the Delaware County Conservation Board headquarters, and also features a nature center. Located three miles southeast of Manchester, Bailey’s Ford Park offers 170 acres of trout and river fishing, three picnic shelters, camping areas with electrical and water hookups, a shower house, a dump station, a well, toilets, a ball diamond, a volleyball court, a horseshoe court, playground equipment, hiking trails, and canoe and kayak river access.

COFFINS GROVE PARK 1387 Early Stagecoach Road, Manchester Coffins Grove Park is a 22-acre park located northwest of Manchester. There are 20 campsites with water and electric hookup available. Camping rates range from $10 - $17 per site per unit per night.

The park is located four miles northwest of Manchester, and features a dump station, stream fishing, two picnic shelters with electricity, vault toilets, a ball diamond, horseshoe courts, volleyball courts, and playground equipment.

2511 Oak Road, Greeley Fountain Springs Park is a 240-acre primitive park of beautiful and rugged areas, encompassing over a mile of Elk Creek trout stream. Primitive camping is allowed throughout the park. Fountain Springs is located three miles northeast of Greeley.

Park facilities include trout fishing, hiking trails, vault toilets, and hunting.

NEWTON TOWNSHIP NATURAL AREA

3407-2 310th Street, Ryan Newton Township Natural Area sits along beautiful Buffalo Creek. The 158 acres in this area provide a large variety of outdoor opportunities. The park is located southeast of Quasqueton between Walker and Buffalo Creek, with access off of 310th Street.

Features include stream fishing, river access, hunting, and nature appreciation.

TWIN BRIDGES PARK

2638 Highway 3, Colesburg Twin Bridges Park is a 144-acre park located on Highway 3. There are 15 campsites with 10 sites having water and electric hookups and five with electric hookups.

Camping rates range from $10 - $20 per site per unit per night. Twin Bridges Park is located five miles west of Colesburg, and features a dump station, three picnic shelters, trout fishing, public hunting,

23088 78th Street, Westgate A quiet 40-acre park full of beautiful Bur Oak Trees, the area is located two miles north of 60th Street, or Highway 3, with access off of W Avenue. Features include a shelter house, a playground, pit toilets, bird watching, and walking.

DUTTON’S CAVE PARK

25218 Ironwood Road, West Union This 46-acre park is heavily timbered with a deep ravine ending in a fifty foot vertical limestone wall directly above a cave opening. Discovered in 1848 by the late Lorenzo Dutton. The park is located northeast of West Union, and features include a limestone cave (closed to public),

ECHO VALLEY STATE PARK

9672 Echo Valley Road, West Union This 100-acre natural area was originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps around the 1930s. This park is owned by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, but is maintained and managed by the Fayette County Conservation Board. Features include many hand-built historical structures built by the CCC (dam, keystone archway, lime kiln, large shelter house, pit toilet), picnicking, a smaller picnic shelter, primitive camping, trout fishing in Glover’s and Otter Creek, hiking and non-motorized biking trails, bird watching, and spring wildflower watching.

GILBERTSON CONSERVATION EDUCATION AREA

22580 A Avenue, Elgin A 345-acre park located along the banks of the Turkey River on the east side of Elgin. This beautiful area is lined with streams and bottomlands surrounded by the palisade limestone bluffs for which northeast Iowa is so famous. The late Millard Gilbertson of Elgin donated the original 327 acres to the Fayette County Conservation Board in 1986.

This unique area offers something for everyone with canoe access, paved 1/4

mile trail that is wheelchair accessible, playground, shelter house, modern campground with dump station, sinks, showers, flush toilets and 28 electrical hook up sites. Over five miles of trails are available for hikers, non-motorized bikes, and horseback riders, and crosscountry skiing. Parts of the park are open to public hunting. One can fish in the pond or the Turkey River.

GLOVER’S CREEK FISHING AND WILDLIFE AREA

9680 Echo Valley Road, West Union A 187-acre parcel of land that is next to Echo Valley State Park. Accessible through the Glover’s Creek side of Echo Valley State Park, features include public hunting and trout fishing.

GOEKEN PARK

29191 Lincoln Road West Union This little five-acre park along Lincoln Road, or Highway 150, has a beautiful panoramic view of the many miles of the Turkey River Valley. Four towns, in addition to the picturesque view of the village of Eldorado, can be seen from this point. Features include a scenic overlook, one electrical hookup campsite, primitive camping, a pit toilet, a playground, two shelter houses, and bird watching.

GOULDSBURG PARK

18649 Sunset Road, Hawkeye The park consists of 64 acres at the con-

fluence of the Little Turkey River and Crane Creek. These streams provide good fishing, tubing, and canoeing. The topography is rolling to hilly. The park is located five miles north of Hawkeye, or three miles north of the intersections of Highway 18 and Highway W14. Features include 29 electrical hookup sites, primitive camping, a bath house with sinks, toilets, and showers, a dump station, water refill hydrants, pit toilets, a playground, a shelter house, hiking trails, fishing in the Little Turkey River and Crane Creek, and bird watching.

SWARTZ PRESERVE

1203 Olympic Avenue, Stanley Swartz preserve is four acres of natural creek bed habitat. Tall trees and thick underbrush give birds a great habitat and provide good opportunities for bird watching. The preserve is located east of Hazleton at the corner of Highway C57 and Olympic Avenue. Its main feature is nature appreciation.

TWIN BRIDGES PARK

13112 O Avenue, Maynard Divided by the South and West Branches of the Volga River, this beautiful twosided park is a great park for picnicking, primitive camping, fishing and more. The park is located three miles north of Maynard on Neon Road. Features include a playground, pit toilets, a shelter house, primitive camping, fishing in the Volga River, canoeing, kayaking, and tubing.

A diverse group of birds, animals, and insects call Frogville home and the plant life available will keep any amateur botanist busy all season long. The area is located southeast of Quasqueton along the Wapsipinicon River just north of the county line.

HOOVER AREA

3149-3 Stewart Avenue, Walker Hoover is a wooded 20-acre area preserved in a nearly perfect natural state.

In this area wildlife and bird viewing is a joy and new photography opportunities are lurking behind each tree and bush.

TROY MILLS WAPSI ACCESS

3251-3 Stewart Avenue, Troy Mills Troy Mills Access has 63 acres along the Wapsipinicon River that are available for hiking, fishing, and river access at the boat ramp. Visitors can camp at primitive sites, but there are no restroom facilities. The access point is located southeast of Quasqueton along the Wapsipinicon River. Features include stream fishing, boating, river access, hunting, nature appreciation, picnicking, fire pits, and primitive camping.

RETURNS FOR 2021

FAIRBANK — Fairbank Island Days has announced its lineup for the festival that will run June 24-26.

The last Island Days in 2019 had 1,100 people on the island, up from 750 prior. Last year’s festival was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Island Days committee has rescheduled Adam Doleac as the Saturday, June 26, concert headliner.

All current tickets will be valid for the 2021 festival, when Doleac will appear at 8 p.m., on the island. A Rolling Stone Magazine reviewer said Doleac combined top-40 style with the blue-collar grit of Bob Seger and bluesy influences. Local artist Aaron Smith will open the set.

The island is accessed by a bridge from First Street North/ East Bentley Park by Costa’s Sports Bar and Grill.

Not Quite Brothers, a five-piece variety cover band from Cedar Falls, will headline entertainment on Friday night, June 25, starting at 8 p.m., according to the Island Days Facebook page. Some of their popular cover videos have featured the music of Johnny Cash and The Black Crowes.

Thursday night, music will emanate from a sound truck starting at 5 p.m.

Festivities will also include a parade — at 10 a.m. Saturday — and softball.

Fair week is slated to begin Tuesday, July 20, with the queen contest and watermelon feed, followed by races Wednesday, July 21, school bus races Thursday, July 22 and a demo derby Friday, July 23.

The live concert featuring Allan with special guests Sara Evans and the Cory Farley Band will be Saturday, July 24 at 6:30 p.m. with gates open at 5:30 p.m.

Cory Farley is a Northeast-Iowa raised recording artist now in Nashville.

Fairbank City Council approved closing some streets from June 23-27 at noon, for pedestrian safety. Road closures will be along Highway 281/Main Street from First to Fourth streets.

FAIRBANK — Several of Fairbank’s parks are nestled by the Little Wapsipinicon River.

On the south side of Main Street on the river, the gazebo at Riverside Park can be reserved.

When it isn’t in use, Island Park has a reservable shelter. It is accessed by a bridge from First Street North/East Bentley Park

by Costa’s Sports Bar and Grill.

TOUR PUBLIC ART THROUGHOUT NORTHEAST IOWA Northeast Iowa is home to a variety of public art installations that capture the character of communities and an award-winning initiative has organized self-guided tours.

In 2019 there were 17 new works installed as part of the Byways of Iowa Foundation’s statewide Public Art Initiative. The new installations showcase the culture and character of rural Iowa communities. Through public engagement, every town in the Public Art Initiative chose a theme for its art project, then sought artists with local ties to help bring the theme to life.

In Northeast Iowa, the installations are in Anamosa, Bellevue, Delhi, Dubuque, Eldorado, Elkader, Guttenberg, Manchester, Maquoketa, Postville, Waukon, and Elgin.

The following summary of installations is from the “Iowa Byways Art Tour” brochure that you can find at bywaysofiowa. org, where you can learn more about the initiative.

Anamosa: “Geared Up”

Peer through this steel sculpture by Cara Briggs Farmer of a Grant Wood-style window, in which images of the river and landscape are inset with motorcycle parts from the nearby National Motorcycle Museum.

It’s at the corner of South Elm and East Main Street, Anamosa.

Bellevue: “Living, Flowing Water, Ever-Changing”

Overlooking the Mississippi River, this pair of sculptures by Ronald K. Hansen represents historic steamboat smokestacks. Colorful, kinetic fish swim around the smokestacks in the wind. It’s located in the 500 block of South Riverview Drive, Bellevue.

Dubuque: “Honey”

Inspired by the past and future of the neighborhood, this sculpture by Abigail Hedley pays homage to nature with its

many forms that convey warmth, dynamism, and tradition. The shape of the sculpture, which abstractly resembles a flame or flower, expresses childhood memories of family bonfires and a sense of wonder felt while exploring nature. It’s located at 1685 Central Avenue, Dubuque

West Union: Artistic Overlook Barrier

In Goeken Park, which overlooks the community of Eldorado, this artistic steel fence by Dennis McElree illustrates the Turkey River Valley’s history, culture and ecological diversity. It’s located at 29191 Lincoln Road, West Union.

Elkader: “Three Bells”

“Three Bells” by Cara Briggs Farmer features metal arches that reflect the rolling hills of the surrounding Iowa countryside.

Postville: “Hometown to the World” Give the giant mosaic globe by Steve and Peggy Kittlelson a spin, then look through each of the three surrounding teleidoscopes to create your own kaleidoscopic experience. Follow the vibrant ocean currents to find the color-changing glass animals on their home continents, monuments like the Statue of Liberty and pyramids of Egypt, and the tiny heart in grassy green Iowa glass.

This installation was inspired by the diversity of the Postville community. It is at 101 E. Greene Street, Postville.

Waukon: Crossroads Inspired by colors represented in Native American culture and Waukon’s offset intersection, this steel and painted plexiglass sculpture by Cara Briggs Farmer plays on colors and shapes. It is at the corner of Main Street and Spring Avenue, Waukon.

Delhi: “Jump In” A steel archway created by late artist and resident Mike Seibert highlights the area’s family-friendly fishing, water skiing, and lakeside activities. It’s at the Corner of Franklin and 3rd Street (Delhi City Park), Delhi

Elgin: “Eagle’s Nest” This art piece by Dennis McElree is along the Turkey River Recreational Corridor Trail in Elgin, this sculpture features a giant eagle’s nest with spotting scopes that enable visitors to view an actual eagle‘s nest. The nest’s scale represents the approximate size of an eagle’s nest if an average-sized adult human were an average-sized mature bald eagle. It’s located off the walking trail between Elgin and Clermont; 23493 Canoe Road.

STRAWBERRY POINT — Visitors will capture the essence of yesterday when touring the Wilder Memorial Museum, 123 W. Mission St., in Strawberry Point. The museum is marking its 51st year with a special open house Saturday, May 29, after forgoing its 50-year celebration last year due to the pandemic.

Beginning May 29, the museum will be open for the summer. Hours are 1-4 p.m.

Sunday – Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Going into the fall, the museum will be open weekends in September and October. Guided tours at other times can be scheduled by calling Director Kris Morarend, 563-419-5329.

A gift of 500 dolls from two sisters, Blanche Baldridge and Gladys Kenneally, marked the beginning of the museum in 1970. The doll collection was well known in the Strawberry Point area. It was originally earmarked for the Iowa Historical Society, but when the sisters were told the collec-

tion could not be kept together, the offer was withdrawn. Frank and Mary Wilder donated the money to build the first section, the doll museum. From that beginning, the museum has continued to grow with two additions constructed over the next 50 years.

Marcy Alderson, who operated a music studio in Oelwein prior to the 1968 tornado, was a well-known antique collector in the area. He, along with his mother Mayme Alderson, financed the second section of the Wilder Memorial Museum in 1983.

WILDER MEMORIAL Museum Artifacts continued to be added including exquisite Dresden and Meissen porcelain dishes and figurines, beautiful antique furniture dating back to the 1800’s and many pieces of artwork.

A third section to the museum was constructed in 1990 thanks to the generosity of Duane Munter and Harold and Leanore Knight. This newest section added military artifacts to historic reference, along with farm equipment, pioneer artifacts, a textile section featuring rug looms, clothing and sewing machines. There is also a general store, doctor’s office and other significant representations from past decades including arrowheads to be found while touring the museum.

“The museum speaks a lot to our heritage in this area. We can’t be where we are now, without having experienced the past,” Morarend said.

In all, the sprawling museum covers more than 3,000 sq. ft., with a history lesson at

every turn. It serves as one of northeast Iowa’s treasures of cultural and historical importance.

“Once people get inside, they can’t believe what they will see,” Morarend said.

FAIRBANK Aquatic Center

Cannonballs were all the rage as the Fairbank Aquatic Center opened to start the 2020 season on Thursday, June 18. The diving board line area was marked every six feet for social distancing which was among many precautions being taken in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

FAIRBANK — The Fairbank Aquatic Center opens for the season on May 27, weather permitting.

Hours will be from 1-7 p.m. Monday, Thursday and Friday; and 1-6 p.m.
