Stroll the beautiful, treelined Dallas St and shop the Bluebonnet Market where you will find unique vendors selling pottery, baked goods, jewelry, fresh produce and more. The Bluebonnet Market is open every Saturday 8am-12pm April through October. Watch your favorite movie under the stars at the popular 7 screen drive in theatre, the Galaxy Drive-in Theatre. Catch a live play at the Ennis Public Theatre or at Theatre Rocks. Check out an action packed drag car race at the Texas Motorplex. The options are limitless! Mark your calendars for upcoming festivals including Blues on Main June 12th-13th and Ennis Freedom Fest on June 26th. On October 30th enjoy Autumn Daze featuring live music by Don Felder, former lead guitarist of the Eagles. Community outreach and activities — KJT youth program, scholarships for KJT members who are graduating seniors History — KJT Society began so that Czech immigrants could bond with each other after coming to the United States. The Ennis chapter was founded in 1900. KJT began accepting women members in 1980. Although it started out as an exclusively Catholic organization, in 2008, KJT opened membership to all Christians.

Community outreach and activities — Sokol provides gymnastics and fitness classes for all ages and a twirling program. Facilities can be used for community functions, weddings and other parties. History — Sokol — which means falcon in Czech — was founded in 1862 in Prague, and brought to the United States by Czech immigrants to preserve their heritage. The Ennis unit was formed in 1908.

Community outreach and activities — Available for booking your special occasions and events, like weddings, graduations, parties, Quinceaneras, Sweet Sixteens, etc. History — SPJST (Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas) is part of the American fraternal benefit system. Brave Combo

Trying to describe Brave Combo’s music requires a pretty extensive vocabulary – at least when it comes to musical styles. For the past three decades the Denton, Texas based quintet has perfected a world music mix that includes salsa, merengue, rock, cumbia, conjunto, polka, zydeco, classical, cha cha, the blues and more. They are America’s Premier Dance band and a rollicking, rocking, rhythmic global journey -- offering what one critic recently wrote, “Even if you come for the party, you’ll leave with something of a musical education.” Brave Combo’s catalog of recordings range from Japanese pop to Latin American dance tunes, to the orchestral classics to rock and roll at its finest. The band has recorded with the late Tiny Tim, and were the band Talking Head’s David Byrne chose for his wedding reception. From festivals and fairs of all varieties across the globe, rock clubs big and small, colleges, roadhouses, dances, cultural centers (including the annual Midsummer Night’s Swing at Lincoln Center in New York City) Brave Combo has charmed countless listeners and won avid devotees. The band has won two Grammy Awards and been nominated for their work 7 times. Brave Combo’s vivid music can be heard in the films David Byrne’s True Stories, Clive Barker’s Lord of Illusions, Late Bloomers, Fools Rush In, Envy, The Academy award winning The Personals. They appeared at Oktoberfest in the beloved American burg of Springfield on an episode of “The Simpsons” and in 2008 Brave Combo provided the musical score for PBS’s first ever animated series, “As the
Wrench Turns” which resulted in an “Annie” nomination from the International Animated Film Society. Their music has also been featured on ABC’s hit series “Ugly Betty”, and Fox Television’s “Bakersfield P.D.” They have also contributed original music for ESPN and The Big Ten network. Keyboardist, guitarist, accordionist, and singer Carl Finch founded the band in 1979, releasing their first records on the band’s own Four Dots Records. Alongside Finch for most of Brave Combo’s years has been multi-instrumentalist Jeffrey Barnes, who joined in 1983. Barnes is known for his lively and imaginative stage wear, as well as playing an array of reeds and woodwinds, harmonica, pennywhistle, guitars, you name it, sometimes in multiple, simultaneous combinations. Rounding out the current line-up are trumpet player Danny O’Brien, drummer Alan Emert and Little Jack Melody on bass guitar.

Czech and Then Some
Czech and Then Some formed in January 1997. The majority of the band’s members are of Czech descent and enjoy keeping their Czech heritage alive. The band plays a variety of music including polkas, waltzes, country music and fun dances. The band has performed at venues such as National Polka Festival in Ennis, Westfest, Accordion Kings in Stephenville, Six Flags Over Texas for the Texas Heritage Festival, Kolache Christmas, Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg, Kolache – Klobase Festival in East Bernard, Wurstfest in New Braunfels, Sausage Festival in Hallettsville, Kansas Polkatennial, Denmark Polka Fest in Denmark, Wisconsin, Starlite Polka Fest in Wahoo, Nebraska, Kolache and Sausage Fest in Prague, Oklahoma, Beckster Fest in Iowa, along with weddings, anniversaries and parties. They have also appeared on the Good Morning Texas

Show on WFAA Channel 8 ABC and Good Day Morning Show on Fox 4. They have played at several fundraising dances to help raise money for the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center. In addition, Czech and Then Some has recorded twice for the Big Joe Polka Show, then seen on RFDTV, and have recorded three times for the Mollie B Polka Party, that is currently aired on RFDTV. On March 21, 2012 the band performed at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. Czech and was chosen by the Czech Embassy in Washington D.C. to perform and represent the Czechs of the United States at the celebration of The Music of Budapest, Prague and Vienna. On May 14, 2016 the band made another trip to Washington D.C. to play at the Czech Embassy for their EU Open House. Josh Zapletal, who plays trumpet and guitar, is the youngest member. Zeke Martinez plays drums, guitar and sings. John Schumacher plays bass and sings, with the band since 2000. Jennifer Slovak plays sax, clarinet, guitar and percussion; Michelle Slovak plays sax, clarinet and keyboard, both have been with the band since 1999. David Czarnek, who plays sax, clarinet and guitar, has played with the band since 2010. David Slovak plays accordion, piano, guitar, bass, drums and sings. He started the Ennis Czech Music Festival. Danny Zapletal plays trumpet and keyboard, sings and arranges for the band.

It started out as three young friends from Ennis learning to play Czech music together. It has developed into a new band with a fresh face – they call themselves “The Ennis Czech Boys.” When Jon David Marek decided to learn the accordion in July of 2004, he couldn’t foresee what it would lead to years later. But with the help of the accomplished accordionist David Slovak (of “Czech and Then Some”), the band started coming together. First, Jared Prachyl joined, playing the bass guitar and doing lead vocals. Then Corey Mikula came in on drums. The new threesome wanted to carry on the “tradition” of Czech music from Ennis. They were joined by Trey Sylvester on keyboard and backup vocals. Jerry Petter joined the group bringing a lot of versatility with his knowledge of music. Jerry gave the band a saxophone, guitar, vocalist and much more. Zeke Martinez, another great musician, shortly followed. Joining the group in 2009 was Frank Vrla III, bringing years of experience and wisdom to the group. Frank is well known for his guitar playing, and also contributes with a great tone playing opposite Jerry on the saxaphone.

Texas Sound Check Band
The Texas Sound Check Band, formerly known as the City Polka Boys, began playing music in the early 1970’s. Original band members Benny Okruhlik, E.J. Macik, Hubert Janak, Dennis Fajkus, James Onheiser, Harry Macik, and Wesley Matus, started the group in Houston, playing for a picnic at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church. The following year, radio DJ and fellow musician Lee Roy Matocha, played a copy of the band’s demo on his local radio program. That demo opened the doors to many battle dances across Texas, including the Bill Mraz Dance Hall. But in January 2000, the band made many changes. The most significant was the changing of the bands name to the Texas Sound Check Band. They also expanded the range of music they play. The band now plays a variety of music, from the old-time polka and waltzes, to classic and today’s country, Ballroom, modern rock, Spanish, German, and Cajun music, to other fun things (like the chicken dance, line dances, etc.). The band has performed at many functions, such as the National Polka Festival in Ennis, the Kolache-Klobase Festival in East Bernard, the Aqua Fest in Austin, Czhilispiel, Westfest, the Caldwell Kolache Festival, the Wurstfest in New Braunfels, the Texas Treasure Casino in Port Aransas, the Crosby Czech Festival, the Fort Bend County Czech Festival, the Needville Harvest Festival, the Lou-

isiana Czech Heritage Festival, and the Bill Mraz Dance Hall Benefit. The band has also been seen numerous times on RFD TV, on the Big Joe Polka Show and the Mollie B Polka Party. In February 2009, the Texas Sound Check Band, sponsored by ABCATS Travel and Carnival Cruises, played for the Caribbean Polka Party Cruise. The band is also known for the number of Polka Masses it performs throughout the year. The band has many years of experience under its belt. Bandleader and Band Manager, BennyOkruhlik, has been playing the accordion, since he was a young boy in high school. Benny helped form the band in the early 70’s and has continued to play over the years. Benny also plays the keyboard and sings the Czech and country vocals. Ben Orsak joined the band in 1994. Ben plays the trumpet, tenor sax, alto sax, flugel horn, baritone, bass guitar, rhythm guitar, keyboard, drums, and sings the Czech and country vocals. Ben is also the music arranger, sound coordinator, and co-manager for the band. Larry Netardus joined the band in 2009. Larry plays the tenor sax, alto sax, guitar, keyboard, and sings. Dennis Shimek joined the band in 2011. Dennis plays the bass guitar and steel guitar. He is the son of the late Wence Shimek and Helen Shimek Malek. The newest member to our band, is drummer John Paul Dornak. John began playing with the band in 2013, when our former drummer, EJ became ill. John has many years of experience dating back to the 80’s. The Texas Sound Check Band has produced three CD’s since 2000: A Music Making GoodTime (2000) (23 songs), Sundown (2003) (18 songs), and “It’s Our Time (2013) (24 songs). They also remastered the last City Polka Boys album, The Okruhlik’s (1997), in memory of Ernie Okruhlik, Benny’s brother. You can still get some of the old, City Polka Boy recordings, upon request.

Fritz Hodde & The Fabulous Six has been performing since 1963. The Fabulous Six proudly celebrated “50 years” of playing polka music in the state of Texas in September, 2013. The band has faithfully traveled the state playing polka, waltz, and country music for all those years and has loved every minute. The band consists of three generations of Hoddes. The Moravians was started by Matthew Matous and Josh Goodwin along with fellow band members in the spring of 2009. The band began with a slow start but after winning a high school talent show, the band took off. In the years since, the band has toured across the country with Mollie B, played on the beach in South Padre Island, and has performed in numerous local festivals including The Ennis Czech Music Festival, Caldwell Kolache Festival, and The National Polka Festival. He is an active ambassador for polka music, revitalizing interest coast to coast resulting in sold out shows, renewed cultural interest, and growing mainstream acceptance. For Alex, it’s more than playing energetic shows; it is a mission to provide a much needed positive experience that pulls communities together to celebrate history, culture and genuinely good times.

For years, the Texas Dutchmen have been providing a mix of experience and the exuberance of youth with Harry’s brand of excitement - a four horn section, and electric bass or tuba. This is the powerful, lively Texas Dutchmen sound that is instantly recognizable both on the stage and on the radio. Combine that with the ability to play a wide 16

variety of polka styles, including Texas Czech favorites and even a little country and big band tossed in for spice! The Texas Dutchmen band was formed in 1970 with the musicians from Czech, German and Polish backgrounds. Since then, the band has played thousands of shows throughout Texas and the Central US, including weddings, anniversaries, two “Mollie B” RFDTV videos, the Praha Picnic, the National Polka Festival in Ennis, the Knights of Columbus State convention, the SPJST Convention as well as the TPMA music awards, and numerous festivals, bazaars and other dances. The band also appeared on radio shows on KFRD, KTRH, KSEV, KULP and the Ennis festival KBEC live broadcast. They also appeared at the Accordion Kings, sponsored by the National Endowment of the Arts in Houston Texas at the Houston’s Miller Outdoor Theatre.

The duo of John and Mark Dujka are celebrating their 30th year in the entertainment business. They have appeared at some of the most popular festivals in Texas and nationally like the Wurstfest, the Ennis National Polka Festival, Westfest, and Beckster Festival in Iowa, spreading their excitement for the traditional music that helped build and strengthen Czech and German communities. Their music can be heard on polka radio programs across the nation, and they have had national TV exposure performing on RFD-TV’s Big Joe Polka Show and the

the band provides a wealth of talent and muscial knowledge that enhances the versitility of this group should it be a polka, waltz or a variety of other tunes. All of the members of the Czech Harvesters are of Czech descent and were inspired by their ancestors musical abilities to pick up an instrument and play. There is an old Czech saying, “Co Čech, to muzikant” or “every Czech is a musician.” The combination of this talented group of musicians gives this band a unique “Texas Sound”. Musicians, Charlie Patak, Mike Snapka, Chris Snapka, Bob Adamcik, Ray Vanek and Jim Zabojnik invite you to come see us to share a dance, song or visit and have a pivo!
Molly B. Polka Party. They have been recognized by the Texas Polka Music Association and 247PolkaHeaven.com for their recordings. The Dujkas are proficient on numerous wind and keyboard instruments as well as guitars and accordions, blending their voices to create an unmistakable sound that has helped to make them one of Texas’ most popular duos in polka music. Some of their trademark songs include “Pivo and Kolaches, Cerveza and Tamales”, “When I Dance With You”, “Eatin’ Kolaches” and “You Are My Special One”. When they are not performing on stage, John and Mark maintain active professional lives. John received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in piano from the University of Houston Moores School of Music is professor of Piano and Music Theory at Blinn College. He also produces a weekly radio show that airs on KULP 1390 in El Campo, TX. Mark earned an Ag-Business degree at Texas State University San Marcos and is employed in the banking industry.

SqueezeBox is head-lined by two Polka Hall of Famers: multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Mollie B, host of the Mollie B Polka Party TV show on RFD-TV; and two-time Grammy Nominee, Ted Lange; and was named the 2019 Best International Band of the Year by the International Polka Association. In addition to being featured on the Mollie B Polka Party, the band composed a song for and appeared in the Clint Eastwood film, “The Mule.” The band, as well as the unstoppable duo Ted and Mollie, have been recipients of multiple awards for their recordings and performances. Additionally, Ted & Mollie B co-produced and performed in the award-winning live show the “Mollie B Christmas Special” for multiple years in Branson, Missouri and Reedsburg, WI. To date, SqueezeBox has released four CDs. They have performed all over the US to capacity crowds, and as of November 2020, have made over 1300 appearances in 24 states. 2021 POLKA MAGAZINE

Jodie Mikula Orchestra
Jodie Mikula organized the Jodie Mikula Orchestra in 1967 as a family band. Jodie’s three sons, Ken, Nick and Andy, were part of the original band and are still performing today. It is one of the few family bands in Texas. Jodie Mikula Orchestra has been acknowledged with several awards from the Texas Polka Music Association (TPMA) including Album of the Year, Band of the Year, Song of the Year and more. In June 1996, Jodie Mikula Orchestra performed at the First Annual Lawrence Welk Polka Festival in Branson, MO. The band tied for first place and performed with Myron Floren in the Lawrence Welk show.

Over the years, Jodie Mikula Orchestra has hosted Polka cruises to various Caribbean ports. They have traveled throughout the United States playing in festivals, dances and special celebrations. The band had the honor of performing on a Polka Cruise in January 2014 hosted by Jimmy Sturr and Mollie B. Since most of the band members play several instruments, this gives the Jodie Mikula Orchestra versatility in performing different styles of music. The band is of Czech decent and plays mainly polkas and waltzes but also adds Country, Rock and Roll and more. Jerry Haisler & Melody 5 has entertained in Central Texas since 1966 when it was started by Otis Beck. They played a variety of great music, including classic country, Czech polkas and waltzes and even a little rock and roll. Current Melody 5 band members consist of bandleader Jerry Haisler on lead guitar, accordion, tenor sax, fiddle and vocals, Robert (Bobby) Haisler, bass, tuba and vocals, Charles Mikeska playing accordion, steel guitar, guitar and vocals, Joe Morris on drums and vocals, Billy Pitts playing guitar and singing lead vocals and Brandi Clark on fiddle and vocals. A few years back the band featured Bob Haisler, who at 92, was likely the oldest active musician in a Texas polka band. He passed away in 2004. He wrote “Dad’s Polka,” which was on the band’s first recorded album in 1978.

The Alpine Village Band spams multiple genres and styles of music, faster than a dog-paddle across a kiddie pool. Countless influences have made the band into the constantly evolving tour-de-force it is today.

Jesse Jennings is a talented singer, songwriter and musician originally from Dublin, Texas, who moved closer to the metroplex to follow his dreams as a professional artist. Landing in Crowley, Texas. He has played in many venues throughout Texas and has gradually expanded his horizons outside his native state and is hitting a much broader crowd as with a tour of Ireland in 2018. He is well exposed to the country music scene as he toured with the Casey Donahew Band as an acoustic guitar player and harmony singer. Jesse is currently pursuing his solo career with his band and has opened for and toured with acts like Willie Nelson, Jason Aldean, Pat Green , Stoney LaRue and Wade Bowen.
Jesse won the DFW Talent Search contest held February 2012 in Burleson, Texas. His cd “A Long Way From Home” released in the Summer 2015 produced three radio hits. Jesse has signed with Mark Caffey’s record label, Legend Records, and is working on new music as often as he can. 2020 he partnered with Smith Music and released “Live at Ft. Worth sound” producing two songs, “This is My Goodbye” and “Whiskey” in an old school approach. In an age of auto-tune and effects, he wanted to get back to the basics where the lyrics and music
speak for themselves. April 2021 he released a new song to kick off the MLB baseball season, “I Kissed Her on the Strikes,” a fun lighthearted song to celebrate a fresh start as we work on getting things back to normal.

Kolache is Polka Fest fast food In-take contest slated for May 29

Four champions to be crowned An annual tradition at the Polka Fest is the kolache-eating contest. It is set for 1 p.m. downtown, on Saturday, May 29. Consuming the fruit or cheese-stuffed puffy dough treats takes on a science exhibit of osmosis and lasts less than a minute. The Czech and Slovakian pastry is downed by contestants, rapidfire, to see who can devour three in the quickest time. Prizes are awarded by a sponsor to the winner in Men’s, Women’s, Youth Boy and Youth Girls divisions. In recent years the victor among men as has been Jonathan Newton, a former coach at Ennis. The 6’3, 220-pound Newton, now coach-ing volleyball and boys’ soccer at Mansfield Timberview, has won multiple times in a row. His first win, in 2015, saw him ingest three Kolaches in 38 seconds. In his most recent quest, his time was reduced to 20 seconds. There has been no word of whether he actually tastes them. Aspiring dessert-eaters should meet at the downtown stage at noon on May 29 or register in advance at the Ennis Chamber of Commerce. Kolache is a semisweet wedding dessert from Central Europe, which later became a part of breakfast fare in South London. It has become popular in parts of the U.S.A. Originally derived from an old Slavonic word, kolo, meaning circle or wheel, the tasty dish has varied over the years, and is even made with sausage or other meats. In true Czech tradition, however, kolache is only stuffed with non-meat items. Czechs immigrants who settled in Texas began making klobasniky, with meat, and so the dish continues to evolve. One thing that is common is that it disappears in a hurry and its handiwork is a satisfied smile. 26

Lillie Crowley’s classic prize winning recipes Halushka Texas Czech Almond Pie (Potatoe Dumplings & Cabbage) Ingredients:
5 potatoes, grated or shredded 1 Tb salt 3 eggs, beaten 3 C flour 2 onions, chopped 1 head cabbage, shredded 1/2 c. butter
Ingredients:
1 C white corn syrup 1 C dark brown sugar 1/3 tsp salt 1/3 C melted butter (unsalted) 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 tsp almond extract 3 eggs, slightly beaten 1 C almonds
Directions: Add beaten eggs to potatoes, then add flour to make a soft dough. Have a pot of water boiling as for spaghetti. Dip spoon into boiling water and drop dough by the spoonful into the water. If spoon is dipped the dough will not stick to the spoon. Cook 10 minutes, drain, rinse with hot water. Saute onions in butter until golden brown. Add shredded cabbage and cook until tender about 1/2 hour. Add salt to potato mixture, then mix with cabbage and add to a white sauce mix.
Czech Quick Pickles (Kvasaky)
Ingredients:
Clean quart size jar Cucumbers 1 Tb canning salt 1 tsp sugar 1 tsp pickling spice, fresh dill or dill seed 1/2 C 10% acidity white vinegar* HOT water Directions: Place salt and sugar in bottom of jar. Slice cucumbers into rounds, sticks or spears and place in jar. Add pickling spice or dill, vinegar and HOT water. Close jar and shake well to dissolve salt and sugar. Wrap closed hot jar in cup, towel or newspaper. Set aside for 12 to 24 hours. Add carrot sticks, fresh green beans or mini-carrots if desired. *Use 5% vinegar for a milder pickle

Ingredients:
1 pt. sauerkraut 1/2 c. diced bacon 2 green onions with tops, chopped or 1/2 c. onion, chopped 1 sm. raw potato, diced 1/4 tsp. sugar 1/8 tsp. caraway Salt and pepper to taste Directions: Open can or jar and drain sauerkraut well. Cover with fresh water and boil for about 10 min., then drain again. Fry bacon and onions until lightly brown. In blender, put 1 cup of water and the raw potatoe, diced, and blend until liquefied. Combine bacon and onion, potato, caraway, salt, sugar and pepper. Stir until mixed, then pour over sauerkraut. Cook for about 15 min.
