Hollie Tatnell’s Grave: A Civil Rights Memorial Very little is known about the history of Hollie Tatnell, but her grave marks a victory in Hearne’s Civil Rights story. Born a slave in Texas, Hollie lived in Robertson County and died in 1911. She would have been one of the last people interred in Hearne’s “colored” cemetery. It had originated as a slave burying ground and was the last resting place of the families of most of the black people in Hearne at the time. The Cemetary was closed in 1912 and those resting there would remain until 1947 when the property was purchased by real estate developers. The developers began forcing the families of those interred to exhume and rebury the remains of their family members at their own cost. One family refused. Hollie Tatnell’s children, Georgia and Andrew, stood up to the developers and refused to remove their mother’s gravesite. Eager to move forward, and not to lose valuable time, the developers were forced to work around the gravesite, 10

constructing a median around the diagonal grave. Triumphant, the Tatnell children added a second marker on their mother’s grave, in addition to her original headstone. In 2007 the site was recognized as an Historic Texas Cemetery despite having only one grave. The Texas Historical Commission sign reads, “This single grave serves as a reminder of the area’s early African American community and the sanctity of burial.”
Visitors can visit the grave site and read the headstone that marks Hollie Tatnell’s life and death. “Come Ye Blessed”, marks the stone at 529 Wheelock Street in Hearne. Visitors still visit Mrs. Tatnell’s final resting place and have been known to leave flowers and trinkets in memory of one who was granted a Civil Rights victory in her honored resting place. 11

John Randle is ranked #10 in all-time sacks and still holds many Minnesota Viking defensive records. Camp Hearne: A Unique History Experience laura CHesner robertson County neWs
In the United States, the war experience of the second World War, was one of a community coming together to support the efforts abroad. Americans grew Victory Gardens, purchased War Bonds and even ladies went to work making everything from parachutes to bombs in order to support the war effort. One way that young men and women could make money and help the war effort was to man the hundreds of Prisoner of War camps that housed the captured troops from Axis power armies. Hearne, Texas was home to one of the largest WWII camps, housing troops from mostly German Afrika Korps captives. Camp Hearne

is now a museum devoted to this important part of world history. Most of the prisoners were NCOs and were not required to work, so they whiled away the hours with art, music, sports and education. The Camp inmates formed an orchestra, enjoyed performing plays, painted the exotic scenery and built elaborate fountains. Camp Hearne Museum has a unique

collection of artwork and photographs of the lives of those living at the camp. Visitors can view uniforms, machinery and even some of the weapons that were a part of the everyday lives of those living and working at the camp. Student groups have come to the grounds for archeology digs, and these inquisitive youths have unearthed some interesting items. Community members whose family members were workers, or inmates, have donated paintings, books, canteens, uniforms and a variety of items that bring the history to life. Camp Hearne allows an in18
sight into the lives not only of the prisoners, but also the canteen workers, nurses and guards that worked at Camp Hearne. Come Visit Camp Hearne on FM 458 and Fairground Road, Wednesdays through Saturdays from 11 am to 4 pm. Camp Hearne also holds several events throughout the year. December 17, 2021 will be the second annual ghost walk, an interactive experience that tells the ghostly tale of Nazis and murder. Smith-Welch Memorial Library
In 1892, Hearne dedicated its first library downtown in a renovated storefront. The ornate classical facade and second floor mezzanine were reflective of Hearne’s prosperity and provided a respite and center of education for the community. Smith-Welch Memorial Library, named in honor of the Smith and Welch families, opened in 1974. Mrs. Josie Smith Welch deeded the property to the city in 1971 for use as a public library. In 2008, the entire
contents of the library were moved two blocks away to the current location in the Jim Florence Community Building. Librarian, Kaitlyn Gonzales, is committed to offering everything a community wants in a library. The current Smith-Welch Library is a library for the modern age. SmithWelch boasts a computer lab with 10 computers, a full line of e-books and an interactive gaming system for kids of all ages. The library is still a hub for education and community in Hearne. The library hosts monthly community events, book clubs, kid’s activities, computer education classes and still has a notary public on hand. Located at 105 W. Fifth St. in Downtown Hearne, the SmithWelch Memorial Library welcomes visitors of all ages. Visit them Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and check out their website and facebook pages for information on monthly events.
