On the Cover – Giles County Christmas For decades, the iconic Giles County Courthouse, located in the heart of Historic Downtown Pulaski, has been outlined in warm white each Christmas. Beginning in 2018, the Giles Chamber acquired, and has continued to add to, the Giles County Christmas Tree, which tops out at 40 feet. The lighting of the Courthouse and Christmas Tree generally takes place in the week following Thanksgiving as the culmination of a largescale holiday kick-off event. Page 4 ♦ Discover Giles

Known as the Land of Milk and Honey, Giles County was established in 1809 and named for Senator William Branch Giles of Virginia, who supported Tennessee’s entrance into the union. The area was formed from what was once part of Maury County, as well as land that was part of the Chickasaw Territory until 1816. Now, its 611 square miles of rolling hills and fertile farmland are home to the cities of Ardmore, Elkton, Lynnville, Minor Hill and Pulaski, the county seat. Giles County made its way into the history books as the home of three Tennessee governors — Aaron V. Brown, Neill S. Brown and John C. Brown. It is the only place where two routes on the Trail of Tears, Bell’s and Benge’s, crossed, and the National Register of Historic Places lists
many local sites, like Maplewood Cemetery, Milky Way Farm, the Matt Gardner Homestead and historic Sam Davis Avenue. Today, cutting-edge technology merges with the county’s strong agricultural base to result in industrial breakthroughs and a diverse economy. County business is conducted at the Courthouse, located at the center of the Pulaski Square, and its annex, 222 W. Madison St., in Pulaski. Giles is governed by a county executive and 21 commissioners, three from each of its seven districts. One stop — whether in a scenic rural setting or at one of the area’s busiest hubs — is enough for visitors to become friends with the generous, hard-working people who proudly call Giles County home.

The Giles County Courthouse, located in the heart of the downtown Pulaski Square, is considered the jewel of the county and is often the first place residents take visitors when in the area. The current Courthouse is the sixth in the county’s history. The first five were constructed in 1810, 1811, 1815, 1852 and 1859, and all, with the exception of one, were lost to fire. After the fifth Courthouse burned in 1907, the County Court made a $100,000 appropriation for the construction of a replacement. Benjamin Bosworth Smith, architect of the project, drew up plans for a fireproof stone and marble structure characterized by tall Corinthian columns. The rotunda rises to the third floor where it’s topped with stained glass windows and a copper roof.

The current Courthouse was completed in 1909 and sits atop the land formerly occupied by the last Courthouse. Giles Countians look forward to December each year when the building is lit up with Christmas lights that draw visitors to the historic Courthouse Square district.
From a stone map of the county to various plaques and monuments, the Courthouse lawn is filled with mementos from the county’s long, storied history. In addition to its General Sessions and Circuit Court rooms, the Courthouse is also a convenient location for the public needing the services of various county offices.

Governors From Giles Three Tennessee governors have called Giles County Home. All surnamed Brown, they served the state and country in a myriad of ways in the mid to late 19th century. Aaron V. Brown Aaron Vail (Fat) Brown was born in Virginia in 1795. He moved to Giles County in 1818 and became a law partner of future President James K. Polk. The Democrat entered politics in 1821, serving in the State Senate (except for 1825) until 1827. He then served two terms in the State House of Representatives. In 1839, he was elected to United States Congress where he served three terms. Aaron Brown was elected governor of Tennessee in 1845. During his one term, Tennessee solidified its reputation as The Volunteer State when Brown called for 2,600 soldiers to help fight the Mexican War and 30,000 answered the summons. In 1847, he was defeated for re-election by fellow Giles Countian Neill S. Brown (no relation). He was appointed Postmaster General by President James Buchanan in 1857, and served in that capacity until his death in 1859.

Neill S. Brown Neill Smith (Lean) Brown was born in Giles County in 1810. He taught school in the area, which financed his education. In 1834, he opened a law practice in Pulaski. He entered state politics as a founding member of the Tennessee Whig Party. In 1837, he was elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives, where he served until 1843. Neill Brown was elected governor of Tennessee in 1847. During his tenure in office, he signed a law for public schools to be established throughout the state. After being defeated for a second term in 1849, he was appointed ambassador to Russia by President Zachary Taylor in 1850. He returned to Tennessee in 1853, where he represented Davidson County in the state house of representatives and was speaker of the house from 1855-57. He was a member of the state constitutional convention of 1870 and later campaigned for his brother, John, who successfully claimed the governorship in 1871. After retiring from public life, Brown died in 1886.
John C. Brown Born in 1827, John Calvin Brown was the only Giles Countian to serve as governor of Tennessee for two terms. He began practicing law in Pulaski in 1848. He volunteered for the Confederate Army of Tennessee in 1861, where he attained the rank of major general. He sustained wounds at the battles of Perryville, Chickamauga and Franklin and was held as a prisoner of war for six months. After the war, he resumed his law practice in Pulaski and, in 1870, served as president of the State Constitutional Convention. He was a member of the Whig Party before the Civil War, but switched parties after the war and was elected governor in 1871 as a member of the Democratic Party. As governor, he oversaw the first effective public schools legislation and worked toward reducing the debt his predecessors had accumulated. He joined the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1876, becoming president in 1888. Brown died in 1889 and is buried in Pulaski’s Maplewood Cemetery.

company of scouts was organized to be the “eyes and ears” of the Confederate Army of Tennessee. Sam Davis was one of an estimated 100 men called the “Coleman Scouts,” commanded by “Captain E. Coleman,” (actually Captain Henry B. Shaw). Fellow scout, Joshua Brown said of their service: “When we received our orders we were told that the duty was very dangerous, and that they did not expect but a few of us to return.” After his capture near Minor Hill, Private Davis was brought to the Pulaski headquarters of Brigadier-General Grenville Dodge for interrogation. Sam told the general: “I know the danger of my situation, and I am willing to take the consequences.” Answering the charge of “Being a carrier of mails, communications and information to persons in arms against the United States Government” Sam said: “You can courtmartial me, or do anything else you like, but I will not tell where I got the information, and there is no power on earth that can make me tell.” Sam told one visitor to his jail cell: “I don’t fear death, but it makes me mad to think that I am to die as a spy. I am not a spy.” Friday morning, Nov. 27, an infantry regiment marched toward the jail. A band played “The Dead March.” A wagon bearing a coffin waited in the street.

At 10 a.m. Provost Marshall Captain William Armstrong escorted the prisoner (hands tied behind his back and accompanied by Federal Chaplain James Young) from his cell to the wagon. Sam took a seat on his coffin. Captured scout Joshua Brown watched from the second floor of the Courthouse across from the jail. Beside him stood “Captain Coleman” (Henry Shaw), the man Dodge wanted. Mr. Brown said: “[Sam] looked around the Square, saw us in the Courthouse looking through a window, stood up in his wagon, and [bowed] us a farewell, one of the most dramatic things I have ever seen in my life. “Captain Shaw” said: ‘If Sam Davis
tells, they will hang us all; but Sam will never tell.’” And Sam never did. Atop East Hill, “the wagon entered the hollow square formed by the troops, in the center of which was the scaffold.” Captain Armstrong told Sam: “I am sorry to be compelled to perform this painful duty.” Sam replied with a smile: “It does not hurt me, Captain. I am innocent, and I am prepared to die; so do not think hard of it.” Dodge’s Chief of Scouts, Captain Levi “Chickasaw” Naron, reminded Sam of the offer of freedom in exchange for his co-operation. Again Sam refused. The prisoner mounted the scaffold; stepped upon the trap; the cap was drawn over his head; the

rope adjusted about his neck. The trap was sprung, and the prisoner fell. “He struggled with his hands and feet; this was succeeded by a slight quivering of the body, which ceased at three and one-half minutes from the time he fell. After being suspended seventeen and one-half minutes” Private Davis was pronounced dead. He was cut down and laid in his coffin. Sam Davis was buried in Maplewood Cemetery for a few weeks, until family friend John C. Kennedy and Sam’s brother Oscar came to Pulaski to bring him home. The questions of what happened throughout Giles County history and who to talk to about it can be answered by one group in one location: The Giles County Historical Society. The organization is headquartered in the rear of the Giles County Public Library, 122 S. Second St., Pulaski. It began in 1974 and, in addition to many members, is comprised of a genealogy room and museum. The genealogy room boasts approximately 2,900 books, 1,370 rolls of microfilm and 10 file cabinets full of records. The museum features more than 4,000 artifacts from the county’s history, including clothing, photographs, war memorabilia, dolls, household appliances and more. Although the state owns the Sam Davis Memorial Museum building, located at 134 Sam Davis Avenue in Pulaski, the Giles County Historical Society owns the items contained within it. Named for Revolutionary War hero Count Casimir Pulaski, the city of Pulaski was established in 1809. The city is located 74 miles south of Nashville and 49 miles north of Huntsville, Ala., thus ensuring those who prefer a more quiet life need only to travel an hour to find a more metropolitan environment. The city is governed by a mayor and six aldermen and has an annual budget of $13.1 million. Daily operations are overseen by a city administrator. The Industrial Development Board and Giles County Economic Development Commission are both instrumental in bringing new businesses to the area. In 1935, Pulaski became the first city in the state to receive power from the TVA. Today, the city — and much of the county
— is served by Pulaski Electric System, which is overseen by the PES Power Board. The city also provides utilities through the Pulaski Water and Natural Gas departments. Pulaski is home to four of the county’s public schools, as well as the University of Tennessee Southern and the Tennessee College of Applied Technology-Pulaski. It also houses one post office, the Giles County Public Library, one police station, two fire stations and Southern Tennessee Regional Health System Pulaski, the local hospital. Giles County Agri Park

Over the course of its 30-plus-year history, the Giles County Agri Park has grown to become much more than an event center. The extensive facilities include a 40-by-150 foot commercial building with kitchen and restrooms, a 40by-60 foot commercial building, an 80-by-150 foot livestock barn, a gravel track walking horse arena with concrete bleachers, a dirt arena with concrete bleachers, a concession stand with covered seating, bathroom facility, several camper hookups with water, a 20-by-30 foot covered pavilion/stage and a new dirt horse arena. The park also hosts a walking trail loop, a small playground, picnic tables and plenty of open, grassy areas. The park serves as host to a multitude of beloved annual events including the Red Carpet Horse Show of the South, Giles County Fair now called Here’s The Beef Festival, Volunteer Classic Junior Angus show, Evergreen Expedition Christmas Tree Trail, Ag-In-The-Classroom Day, Southern Lawn, Garden and Home Show, the WKSR Annual Radio Auction and the South Central Junior 4-H Livestock Show. Other events held include tractor pulls, demolition derbies, circuses, special cattle and horse sales, scout day camps, car shows and BBQ contests. In addition, the park has been used for many group meetings, birthday parties, wedding receptions and soccer and baseball practices. The Agri Park’s growth and potential is far from finished, though, as the county has a master plan that includes plans for a walking trail around the park, a small picnic pavilion, a children’s playground, additional restrooms, a frisbee golf course, new exhibit building with a commercial kitchen, updated landscaping throughout the park, digital entrance sign, new entry gates, new roads and walkways, and an improved midway area. In addition, plans include new lighting for the existing gravel track horse arena and the new dirt horse arena. The park is managed by a joint board made up of civic clubs and community clubs who have invested in the park facilities and elected officials of the Giles County Commission. Sam Davis Park

Founded in 1924, Sam Davis Park features some of the best facilities for high school sports in the state and has served as the home of the Giles County High School Bobcat football team for more than half a century. The park features both a 4,200 capacity football stadium and a baseball field where local high school, junior high and recreational teams all play their games. The plot of land where the park now stands has hosted county sports events since at least 1915. In 1924, a small lot was sold to a group of trustees with restrictions that the title to the property pass to the town of Pulaski “to be held and used forever as a ball ground and play
ground for the children and schools of said town.” The purchase price for that land was $2,000. In 1930, the moniker Sam Davis Park was formally introduced and baseball and football games took place at the newly dedicated park, although not in the current locations of either Sam Davis Stadium or Steve Speer Field. The many events held at the park over the years began to damage the surfaces of the baseball and football fields. In the 1940s, the football field was moved to the south end of the park, while the baseball field remained in the northern end. In 1948, a building project began on a new football stadium to fit

the seating demands the former could not, and a newly-formed Quarterback Club raised money to build a 4,000 seat stadium which stood until 2009. That year, a new modern stadium was built to replace the 60-year old former structure. The new Sam Davis Stadium features some of the best facilities in the state for high school football, including its state-of-the-art George Martin Press Box. Over the years, the park has also been home to fairs, circuses and the Thanksgiving Butter Bowl, but it has, perhaps most importantly, always served as a source of both pride and recreation for the citizens of Giles County. STAAR Theatre at Antoinette Hall Southern Tennessee Area Arts Repertory (STAAR) is an arts and theater organization based in Pulaski that has provided theater, music and arts entertainment and education for the Southern Middle Tennessee and North Alabama region for more than 20 years. STAAR currently operates a 200seat theatre from its comfortable and accessible street-level facility beneath historic Antoinette Hall. The 1868 building is on the east side of the public Square facing the Giles County Courthouse and is a contributing structure to the Pulaski Courthouse Square Historic District, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior in 1985. STAAR, a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, has been successful in its goal of providing live entertainment and ongoing arts education for Giles and surrounding counties.
As a non-profit, STAAR Theatre owns the building in which it operates. The Antoinette Hall Preservation Society is a companion organization to STAAR that was born of the desire to restore historic Antoinette Hall so that it can once again become a center of arts and culture for the community and the region. Old Graveyard Memorial Park

Old Graveyard Memorial Park is a peaceful, secluded spot located on Cemetery Street in Pulaski. A pathway dotted with trees and plants leads visitors to the headstones, monuments and obelisks of some of the city’s original citizens. Births from as early as 1753 are listed and the graveyard was used by the city from 1817-1883. After years of neglect and abandon, the city joined with the Department of Housing and Urban Development to
restore the area to a combined park, cemetery and historical monument in 1968. The resulting renovation has left the markers in their present, restored state. A monument was installed that features bronze plaques bearing the names of all known persons buried there, while lights and benches provide a means for visitors to enjoy the surroundings. Brochures featuring information about the park, its history and restoration are available at city hall.

Historic Maplewood Cemetery

Historic Maplewood Cemetery consists of 35 acres on Sam Davis Avenue in Pulaski. Originally known as New Pulaski Cemetery, it was established in 1855 because space was limited in the Old City Cemetery (now known as Old Graveyard Memorial Park). In the 1860s, the cemetery became the final resting place for an untold number of Union and Confederate soldiers, many of whom are buried in unmarked graves. In 1880, New Pulaski Cemetery became Maplewood. The design of the cemetery reflects the Victorian values of the time. The Victorians’ need to surround themselves with natural beauty is present in the vast array of maple, hemlock, oak and magnolia trees. Impressive grave markers, obelisks, urns and columns show both a Classical influence and a continued dedication to one’s deceased loved ones. In 2005, it was named to the National Register of Historic Places. Normally cemeteries are not considered, but Maplewood’s significance in the settlement, social and ethnic history of the area and its design could not be ignored. Some of the more notable people who are buried in Maplewood include Gov. John C. Brown, Martin Methodist College founder Thomas Martin, Senator Ross Bass, Congresswoman Willa McCord Eslick and Confederate General John Adams. It was also the original burial site of Sam Davis before he was disinterred and moved to Smyrna, Tenn. A Publication of the PULASKI CITIZEN

Abernathy Field Airport

Jointly owned by the county and the city of Pulaski, Abernathy Field Airport is located at 1736 Bethel Road in Pulaski, and has been a vital part of the Giles County business community for more than 75 years. The airport is named for local businessman Nathan Abernathy, who felt the county needed such a facility. Construction began in 1943, and by the time it was completed, the airport consisted of a field with three grass runways. In the 1960s, the grass runways were consolidated into one paved runway. long by 75 feet wide. Long-range plans are to expand the runway to 6,000 feet long by 100 feet wide, in order to make conditions safer and more efficient, as well as to be able to land larger planes. In 2014, the airport building itself was christened The Randy P. Jones Aeronautical Complex after the airport’s longtime manager, who has been with the airport since 1972. Jones said the airport belongs to the people and he invites everyone to tour the grounds. The facility houses three hangars that are 6,400 square feet, 7,000 square feet and the largest, which
contains 14,400 square feet of hangar space and 2,000 square feet of classroom and office space. Abernathy Field’s primary purpose is to attract and support industry and business, which it does by hosting countless flights each year. The airport also serves the area in a recreational capacity. For anyone interested in learning to fly, flight and ground school training are offered for single and multi-engine airplanes, and the local Barnstormers Flying Club is always looking for new members. What About Those Turkeys? A large number of turkeys in the area has made Pulaski and the rest of Giles County an increasingly popular choice among hunters. Wild turkeys are often seen on the local pastoral hillsides in flocks numbering up to 50. When it was decided to celebrate this noble bird in 2004, several generous sponsors created a Leadership Program for the Youth of Giles County by growing a flock of less mobile birds. This fund-raising effort, developed through the Giles County Chamber’s leadership program, has placed 10 fiberglass turkey sculptures at different businesses throughout the city. Not only do the turkey displays serve as a magnet for curious tourists, the program was an integral piece in Giles County earning the 2008 State of Tennessee designation“Wild Turkey Capital of Tennessee.” —Giles County Chamber

Trail of Tears Interpretive Center Pulaski’s unique position in the saga of the Trail of Tears is shared through historical details at the Trail of Tears Interpretive Center, 220 Stadium St., Pulaski. Not one, but two Trail of Tears routes passed through Pulaski during the mass exodus more than 180 years ago. Today, in memory of “Nunna Dual Isuny,” which translates as “The Trail Where We Cried,” the Trail of Tears Interpretive Center’s indoor exhibits of interpretive panels developed with consultation from the Tennessee Trail of Tears Association and Middle Tennessee State University combine with its outdoor signs, memorial benches and a Cherokee family sculpture to honor approximately 2,000 Native Americans forced from their homes and made to follow Bell’s and Benge’s routes. Housed in a rock building formerly known as Mars Chapel, The Trail of Tears Interpretive Center is the result of local residents and organizations joining forces with Giles County’s Tourism Foundation and Historical Society, Martin College, the Elkton Historical Society, as well as city and county officials. Public and private schools are encouraged to schedule an educational day for students. Agriculture Agriculture as an industry occupies no less than a quarter-million acres in Giles and moves more than $48 million through the county annually. A strong rural community with a lot of family farms — the most individual farms of any single county in Middle Tennessee — Giles County had an estimated 2,600 growers and producers who made the commitment to see their investments through the gambles of weather, disease and pests to face the market in hopes of profit in 2017, the latest year for which data was available. Census data recently ranked Giles County as third in beef cattle production in the state. And with the quantity are producers who are using management practices, studying genetics and working with the Giles Beef Alliance to ensure a higher quality of cattle as well. Many beef producers also sale value-added and/or home-raised beef locally to those who are interested in the farm-to-table process. Giles County features a diverse agricultural market, which includes beef; poultry; dairy; horses; goats; sheep; beekeeping; commercial fruits and vegetables; forestry; field crops including corn, popcorn, soybeans, Page 50 ♦ Discover Giles

wheat, cotton, hemp and forages; value-added agriculture including two wineries, one distillery, a pumpkin patch and other agritainment operations; a sorghum molasses operation; horticulture including greenhouse/bedding plant farms and yard and lawn services; and wildlife recreation. Farmers, ranchers, 4-H and FFA members and others involved with agriculture understand the county’s strategic location and marketing opportunities for ag products. In fact, impressive estimated annual sales for 2017 based on the U.S. Census of Agriculture show Giles reaching $23 million for livestock, $6.3 million for poultry and their products and more than $18 million for corn, soybeans, wheat and all other crops. The UT-TSU Extension Office, the USDA Service Center, Giles County Farm Bureau and the Giles County Cattlemen’s Association support county farmers and producers with educational programs and other resources. The county is also home to a livestock market, a livestock pavilion (Giles County Agri Park), several county agri-business/retail stores and veterinarians/vet offices, as well as numerous independent agriculture sales and service representatives. At the foot of lofty Esau on the banks of Robertson Fork Creek in the 15th District of northern Giles County, nestles the quiet little town of Lynnville. Lynnville got its name from Lynn Creek, which had been named for the linden or linn trees that grew along its bank. The rolling hills and lush green valleys are suited to dairying and other forms of agriculture, like the production of corn, hay, tobacco, fruits and vegetables that are all grown there. The first settlements were made on Lynn Creek and Robertson Fork Creek. Among those early settlers were John Laird, William Dearing and Elisha White. Just before the Civil War, Old Lynnville was quite a flourishing little town. It had a long row of business houses, a wholesale coffee house, a large brick hotel, a
school and Methodist, Cumberland Presbyterian and Christian churches. Sadly, much of the town was burned and destroyed during the war. Lynnville’s residents and government of a mayor and five aldermen have always been interested in education and the welfare of its children. In his will, Robert B. Jones stipulated that $20,000 be given to build a preparatory school at Lynnville. For three-fourths of a century (1900-78) the Robert B. Jones High School provided many outstanding people their basic education. Today, the Lynnville Railroad Museum on Mill Street is the center attraction. However, locals and visitors alike find many enjoyable things about the town. From its branch of the Giles County Public Library to several

Milky Way Farm

Milky Way Farm began as various tracts joined in 1930 by Frank C. Mars to create a 2,805-acre bluegrass livestock farm, which was owned by Mars Incorporated of Chicago, Ill., the makers of MILKY WAY and other famous candies. Throughout his many busy years of a crowded career, Mars always carried with him a love of horses. After his death in 1934, wife Ethel V. Mars proved herself fit to carry on the dream she shared with her late husband. She began to personally manage the farm’s operations, which included Holstein-Fresians in its commercial dairy and the production of the South’s finest, and one of the nation’s best short horn Hereford herds. One bull, Tommy Domino 14th, broke a world record for bringing an unheard of $65,000. The farm also made saddle history as the country’s leading money winner for its breeding and development of thoroughbred and saddle horses. In 1940, Gallahadion, clad in Milky Way’s green and white colors, won the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs — proving Ethel V. Mars a horse woman of the highest order. What began as a village Sept. 6, 1870, is now the incorporated city of Minor Hill. Situated near the Alabama border on land formerly occupied by Chickasaw Indians, Minor Hill has a special place in history, not only as home to gospel music’s late James D. Vaughn but also because of two important Civil War events that occurred in the community. Civil War Trail markers lead travelers along Highway 11 to a monument built in the 1920s that stands where Sam Davis, “The Boy Hero of the Confederacy,” was captured in 1863. Minor Hill has a mayor and four alderman, who strive to promote the highest quality of life for the community
by providing leadership, service and opportunity. The residents are also served by two policemen, volunteer fire and medical first responder departments, a post office, library and one of the county’s eight public schools. The city has well-used parks, where ball players enjoy the Tracy Wilburn Sports Fields, and the City Park, AgPark and Horse Arena are used to host a number of community-wide events and fund-raisers. Rural living with modern conveniences — Minor Hill is a thriving city in a peaceful community with a historic past and a promising future that prides itself as “a friendly place to visit and a great place to live.”

The City of Elkton is located on the banks of the Elk River, where it was founded in 1808 by settlers who saw its beauty and business potential. The great flood of 1902 caused a catastrophic overnight devastation to the community, which had been considered a promising location for the county seat. For more than 100 years since, the city and its residents have worked to build what is now a quiet farming, ranching and familyfriendly community. Many small businesses take advantage of the city’s strategic location with great visibility and easy accessibility on U.S. Highway 31 and Interstate 65, where it is between Nashville and Huntsville, Ala., and only 30 miles from an international airport and port facility.
Listed on three National Historic Trails, history enthusiasts as well as nature and adventure lovers, hunters, farmers, investors and industrial tycoons are drawn to the city. Overseen by a mayor and five aldermen, Elkton’s residents are also served by a Post Office, police and volunteer fire departments, as well as a Giles County Ambulance Service satellite station and one of the county’s eight public schools, which serves grades pre-K through 8. Annual events, like its Mile Long Yard Sale and Fire Department Chicken Stew fund-raiser, add to the community atmosphere, befitting the city’s motto, “Come to Elkton, where family still matters.”

Cooperation is something the city of Ardmore has learned to embrace, if for no other reason than the way its boundaries lie. Straddling four county borders in two states, Ardmore is located in Limestone and Madison counties in Alabama and Giles and Lincoln counties in Tennessee, and is the second largest city in Giles County. Dating back to 1914, Ardmore was and is a flourishing community that currently boasts a fast growing residential and business community where businesses have easy access to transportation with Interstate 65 and CSX Railroad both running through the city. Even with its nearby metropolitan activities, major colleges, educational services, health care and airport accessibility, the city continues to tout its small town values and neighborly atmosphere. Ardmore is governed by a mayor and six aldermen in Tennessee and a mayor and five councilmen in Alabama. Its residents are served by street and water departments, as well as emergency services from its police, volunteer firefighters and an Emergency Management Agency with its own helipad and two community storm shelters. A hard-working city with manufacturing and other jobs, the community also takes time to play, offering two parks with lighted walking trails, playgrounds, basketball courts, batting cages, a football/soccer field, splash pad, rodeo/tractor pull arena, outside theater and baseball/ softball fields with an outstanding youth program. Additionally, residents and visitors alike look forward to visiting the Ardmore Veterans Group museum and the Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Crepe Myrtle Festival in late summer. Other annual activities include the Quarterback Club Car Show, Lions Club Tractor Pull and Police/Fire Rodeo.

Bodenham

Early settlers to Giles County traveled down the only existing road into the area at that time, the Bumpass Trace or Trail, which proceeded southward into Giles from Columbia, passed through Bodenham and ended at Aspen Hill. It is the path most likely taken by brothers, Peter and David Bodenheimer, natives of Holland, for whom the fertile, rolling hills of the Bodenham community were named. Once a thriving community with its own mill and school, today Bodenham moves at a quieter pace, centering around the grounds of the former Bodenham High School. The site is the location of a walking trail and pavilion, a county convenience center and Bodenham Head Start, which is housed in the only remaining school building. It also features a historical marker to Bumpass Trace, with the marker, walking trail and pavilion having come to fruition due to the ongoing efforts of the active members of the Bodenham Community Club. Bodenham Mill, now privately owned by Betty and Leslie (Bubba) Parker, serves as a museum to the community and its school, and is open by appointment only. A Publication of the PULASKI CITIZEN

Campbellsville, a community nestled in the north central section of Giles County, is an area that finds its unity in a shared history and sense of commonality rather than an actual incorporation. Historically, the area is of great importance. It includes the Bumpass Trail, the first northern road to Columbia; the Benge’s route on the Trail of Tears; and the Battle of Campbellsville that took place Nov. 24, 1864. The Campbellsville Area Association is a non-profit volunteer group that seeks to preserve Campbellsville’s heritage while promoting its future. The group holds numerous events throughout the year, including an Ice Cream Churn-Off each summer and the Campbellsville Heritage Festival each October, which includes historical reenactments, games, contests, exhibits, food, Clan Campbell history and a 5K.
