In addition to providing our readers with entertaining stories from the community, we have also had the immense privilege of serving local and regional businesses with affordable, quality advertising opportunities, in not only our newspaper, but other various publications we provide.

This publication, the Taylor County Fact Book, is a special effort by our staff to create a comprehensive and useful tool that will allow you, the reader, to learn more about the community as a whole. Our staff has had a wonderful time researching, discovering information and talking with residents to chronicle all of the wonders of Taylor County.

It is our hope that this publication will serve as a great promotional tool for visitors to the area, those looking to relocate to our wonderful community, and those just passing through in search of local points of interest.

Taylor County truly is a special place to visit or even call home. From friendly and welcoming citizens to the breathtaking beauty the area has to offer, Taylor County is one of West Virginia’s hidden gems. Taylor County at a glance

Nestled in the hills of West Virginia is a quiet mountain county, where the people seem to stick to old-fashioned values. The residents of the county are often warm and welcoming, greeting each other and guests with a smile and hello. The area’s rich history is only outdone by the natural beauty of the area.

Rising from the Tygart River and covering 176 square miles of land, Taylor County was formed on January 19, 1844 by the Virginia General Assembly in Richmond. To form the new county, parts of Barbour, Harrison and Marion counties were combined. The seat of Taylor County was originally set in Cross Roads, which would later be named to Willamsport before becoming present-day Pruntytown. Pruntytown served as the county seat until 1878, when a county election saw it moved to Grafton, where it still sits today.

One of Taylor County’s most historic claim to fame is that it was the birthplace for Mother’s Day. Just outside of Grafton is Webster, where the holiday’s founder, Anna Jarvis, was born and raised. Following the institution of the holiday, Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church was officially named the International Mother’s Day Shrine.

The county’s history extends far beyond that. During the Civil War, the county served as a key location for both the Union and Confederate Armies. In fact, Grafton’s T. Bailey Brown is memorialized as the first Union Soldier killed during the Civil War. Because of the rich heritage of the war, the county houses not one, but two national cemeteries—the West Virginia National Cemetery, located in Pruntytown and the Grafton National Cemetery, located in Grafton.

A county proud of their veterans and current service men and women, Officials: Taylor County boasts the longest Assessor running, continuous Memorial Day Christa Kinsey Parade. In fact, the West Virginia Circuit Clerk Legislature recognized the parade as Vonda Reneman West Virginia’s Official Memorial Day Parade.

The City of Grafton

Steeped in tradition and a storied history, Grafton is a town that continues to prove that no matter the obstacles in the way, its residents will find a way to flourish. The community is comprised of organizations and city officials who work diligently to make Grafton a better place, and the area continues to see growth on its way to greatness.

When the Baltimore and Ohio railroad made its way into the small settlement of Fetterman, a significant explosion of population occurred.

The expanding town was named Grafton, in honor of a civil engineer with the railroad named John Grafton. For over a century, the railroad would serve as the lifeblood for the community, bringing guests from far and wide to the area.

From the mid-1800s through the mid-Twentieth Century, Grafton experienced an ebb and flow of economic growth, aided by the railroad industry, along with the construction of the Tygart Dam and Tygart Lake State Parks in the 1930s. In 1980 CSX made the decision to move their headquarters to Florida, taking with it numerous railroading jobs, leading to an economic downturn.

Despite the challenges stemming from the despair, the residents of Grafton have begun rallying together to bring back the former greatness that once was the town. Grafton has seized every opportunity to renew and revitalize itself. Officials and members of the community work tirelessly to breathe life back into the sleepy mountain town.

One of the first boosters that the city experienced was being named as the winner of the West Virginia Hub’s Turn This Town Around incentive, Officials: and from that one of Grafton’s key revitalization groups, All Aboard Mayor Sheila Westfall Grafton was formed. The organization is comprised of hardworking, dedicated Vice Mayor community members with the common Karen Willis goal of restoring Grafton’s former glory.

City Council Members With fun, family events such as First Peggy Barney, Phil McDaniel and Fridays, the annual Spirit of Grafton Earl Bartlett Festival, the Christmas Parade and Light Up Night, the Candyland Candy City Manager Kevin Stead Hunt, Trunk-or-Treat and other various community get-togethers, it’s not City Clerk surprise that the town has seen a Larry M. Richman rebirth in the past couple of years, that Police Chief only continues to get better. Residents Robert W. Beltner are happy to welcome guests to their fair city, and strive to provide happy Code Enforcement Officer memories that will last a lifetime.

The Town of Flemington

In the southwestern part of Taylor County lies a town that has a rich heritage in the coal industry. In fact, it has been said that the town of Flemington was created by a coal company in the 18th century.

Incorporated in 1922 by the Taylor County Circuit Court, Flemington was named for James Fleming, an esteemed early settler of the area, who hailed from Hampshire County.

Today, the residents of the town strive to see the quaint little mountain town thrive. Often described as a close-knit, determined community, Flemington’s people are constantly looking for new ways to show their pride.

With their annual Flemington Days Fair and Festival, the community welcomes guests to their town for a fun, family friendly celebration.

The three-day long celebration began over 20 years ago, with simple restoration efforts of the town’s old, historic jail. The Flemington Days Fair and Festival has been entertaining generations with fun, games, delicious food, an annual car show and a parade. After two decades of providing family fun, the festival committee feared that the doors would close on the celebration for good, but in true Flemington spirit, the community rallied together and saved their annual tradition.

Much like most areas in Taylor County, Flemington greatly benefited from the presence of the CSX Railroad, which geographically divides the town. The coal and agricultural industries have also had a profound impact on the community. Home to Flemington Elementary School, who Officials: earned the recent acclaim of a Blue Ribbon school, the community takes Mayor William Blake pride in their educational system.

In government, Flemington operates Recorder on a mayor-council system. Election Vicki Greathouse for town officials occurs on the second Town Council Members Tuesday of June every two years, and Judith Stewart, David Schutt, the newly elected officials take office and Bradley Mayle beginning on July 1. International Mother’s Day Shrine

Mother’s Day-the very special day set aside each year to honor your Mother “the best Mother who ever lived-the Mother off Your Heart,” had its beginning in Grafton, Taylor County, West Virginia.

Anna Jarvis dedicated her like to the establishment of Mother’s Day, a day which was the inception of her own mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, calling for someone, somewhere, sometime to establish a special day for Mothers. On the second Sunday in May ,1907, two years after the death of Anna Jarvis’ mother, she arranged for friends in Grafton to hold a memorial service for her mother. On the same day, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she invited friends to her home to share her vision of a new national holiday: Mother’s Day. She began promoting her idea and with her persistence, Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church of Grafton, launched the annual observance of Mother’s Day Sunday, May 10, 1908.

During the first Mother’s Day celebration, carnations, the favorite flower of Ann Reeves Jarvis, mother of the founder who was a Sunday school teacher for twenty-one years at Andrews Church, and the first honored Mother of Mother’s Day, were presented to those in attendance, a congregation of 407 persons.

The second Sunday of May was proclaimed as Mother’s Day, as a result of the first West Virginia State Proclamation, issued on April 26, 1910, by West Virginia Governor William E. Glasscock.

On May 8, 1914, the United States Congress, by adoption of a joint resolution endorsing the observance of Mother’s Day, authorized the president to proclaim Mother’s Day to be celebrated on the second Sunday of each May as a national holiday celebrating “the public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.” The resolution was officially approved on May 9, 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson, making Mother’s Day official, nationwide.

On May 15, 1962, the magnificent Andrews Church, built in 1873, was declared to be the International Mother’s Day Shrine, perpetuity as an international shrine to all mothers and as a memorial to Anna Jarvis, founder of Mother’s Day. Today the Andrews Church congregation is part of The Church of the Good Shepherd United Methodist of Grafton, the combined Andrews, St. Paul’s, West Main Street, and St. John’s churches.

The International Mother’s Day Shrine was named a National Historical Place on December 18, 1970, a National Historical Landmark October 5, 1992 and a National United Methodist Historical Site on June 30, 2007.

National Cemeteries

Taylor County is an area with a rich military history, so it seems a fitting accolade that it would house not one, but two of the state’s national cemeteries: the Grafton National Cemetery, located at 353-401 Walnut Street, Grafton and the West Virginia National Cemetery, located at 42 Veterans Memorial Lane, in Pruntytown.

In 1867, Major R.C. Bates was ordered by the United States War Department to locate a permanent burial site for Union Soldiers who had perished on the battlefields and hospitals around the state. Because it was located near Maple Avenue Cemetery where many war dead had already been buried, and it had a fairly flat terrain in an area known for its hills, the location on Beech Street was selected. Nearly 3.2 acres of land were dedicated in 1868 by Governor Arthur I. Boreman as the Grafton National Cemetery.

While acting as the final resting place for many soldiers, one of the most notable is T. Bailey Brown, who is credited as being the first Union casualty of the Civil War, having been killed on May 22, 1861, in Fetterman. Although not originally buried in the hallow grounds, Brown was reinterred at the Grafton National Cemetery in 1903, and in 1904 the Grand Army of the Republic dedicated a 12-foot obelisk monument in his honor.

The Grafton National Cemetery is the final resting place of 1,252 Union dead from the Civil War, and of those 613 are unknown. Remains from temporary graves in Clarksburg, the Rich Mountain battle site and Wheeling, as well as Grant, Fayette and Kanawha counties were relocated to the cemetery. Although sanctioned for Union dead, some Confederate soldiers were buried on the grounds as well.

It became apparent that the Grafton National Cemetery was quickly running out of space, and that another area would need to be selected to bury the remains of some of the nation’s bravest men and women. in 1975, negotiations were started between the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and the state. The result was the selection of a 58-acre site that had once been part of the West Virginia Industrial School for Boys. A monument for the school can be found on the grounds.

Construction began on the new West Virginia National Cemetery, but was because of negotiations and poor weather conditions, work was slowed. Although construction was incomplete at the time, the cemetery was dedicated on September 27, 1987. The next day, the grounds opened interments.

Residents are proud to welcome guests to both cemeteries, which host special veteran’s services throughout the year, including Memorial Day and Veterans Day services. The cemeteries are beautifully decorated with wreaths during the annual Wreaths Across America event, held each December, and in May, residents and guests adorn the headstones with American Flags for the Memorial Day weekend. Both cemeteries are open for visitors from dawn to dusk, daily.

Memorial Day Parade & Observance

For more than 150 years, the residents of Grafton and guests to the area have been celebrating and honoring the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States, with their annual Memorial Day Parade and observances. Hailed as the nation’s longest, continuous running Memorial Day Parade, Grafton’s celebration earned the acclaim of being the official Memorial Day Parade of West Virginia, thanks to the work of Delegate Amy Summers.

The annual celebration began as Flower Strewing Day, when on May 30, 1809, Mayor William Mallonee issued a proclamation urging citizens to turn out at the Grafton National Cemetery, located on Walnut Street, to decorate the graves of the fallen with fresh flowers. The day held on to its name until 1882, when the Reno Post Number 7, Grafton Unit of the Grand Army of the Republic was organized and adopted the name Memorial Day. Since that time, the residents of Taylor County have been celebrating the lives of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the country with the annual parade and observances at the local national cemeteries, with the hard work of the caring, dedicated group of individuals that formed West Virginia Memorial Day, Inc. in 1980. The committee works year round to ensure that each parade and observance is a success.

During Grafton’s Memorial Day celebrations, veterans, school children, sports teams, dance and baton corps, bands, clubs, organizations and churches come together to comprise the parade lineup. The parade follows the route that was established in 1890, beginning near Bridge Street, making its way down Main Street, onto Beech Street and then out Walnut Street to the Grafton National Cemetery. Once at the cemetery, flowers are place on the graves of the fallen soldiers.

Following the parade, a special program is held at the cemetery near a replica of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Here, dignitaries from around the state and throughout the county gather to share remarks and pay their respects to the brave men and women laid to rest in the cemetery.

The West Virginia Memorial Day Committee meets the first Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m., usually in the Grafton City Council Chambers, located at 1 West Main Street, Grafton. Any individual wishing to take part in the planning of the Memorial Day Parade is asked to attend the meetings. Meeting dates can be found in the Mountain Statesman newspaper.

Tygart Lake State Park Foundation

Chartered January 13, 1999 Tygart Lake State Park Foundation’s purpose is to aid, strengthen, enhance and support in appropriate ways the services of Tygart Lake State Park. The foundations goals are to promote and improve facilities, augment current offerings, provide additional attractions and assist park personnel and visitors in the future development of the park, Tygart Lake State Park is bolstered by the energy and volunteer work provided by the Tygart Lake State Park Foundation. This small, but fierce organization has provided the park with countless volunteer hours and upgraded park facilities through annual events and fundraisers.

Some of the wonderful projects that the foundation has accomplished include a wedding gazebo, purchased by the Tygart Lake State Park Foundation, with matching money from the WV DNR, Another notable project came from a $7,500 donation from the Fisher Family, honoring the late Dr. Gordon Fisher. The Tygart Lake State Park Foundation was able to secure a matching grant from the WV State Recreation Area Foundation Grant Program. The combined funding provided a $20,000 playground for the cabin/camping area of the park. In addition, a smaller playground has been built beside Tygart Lake Lodge.

Both these playgrounds provide children with safer, larger, creative play areas while visiting Tygart Lake State Park.

The Tygart Lake State Park Foundation funded the purchase of five pet waste elimination stations that have been placed throughout Tygart Lake State Park and they funded and constructed two smaller single table shelters within picnic area number two and the members have plans to have a gazebo built complete with a kitchen, in memory of Mick Elsey.

To help raise funds for these various projects the foundation hosts a variety of events throughout the year. From annual traditions as the Easter Egg Hunt and Breakfast with Santa to movie nights, princess days, murder mysteries and much more.

One of the annual events in the Appalachian Fall Festival. Every year the sweet smells of apple butter fills the air and attendees come from all around to see crafts, homemade apple butter, hayrides, spinners demonstrating how to spin yarn, vendors and much more.

Another community favorite tradition is the annual Terror on the Tygart Haunted Hayride. The event is typically held the weekend before Halloween. Attendees should be ready for loads of fun complete with sights and frights. The hayride is always family friendly with only a small admission price and donations are gladly accepted to support the foundation.

As snow starts to fall, the magic at the state park begins to grow. Every year, Santa comes to visit and brings some Christmas magic to the area.

A new tradition that started last year was the Christmas Carriage Rides, where guests were taken on a beautiful horse drawn carriage ride.

Grafton’s First Fridays

Looking for a way to draw folks to downtown Grafton while giving them a family friendly outing once a month, All Aboard Grafton hosted its inaugural First Friday four years ago. What used to be a small group of people hovering around three store fronts has grown into a busy Main Street with folks floating from one end to the other enjoying First Friday fun.

Downtown Grafton has embraced the once a month celebration.

From the city hosting a free lunch to plays in Toad Hall, First Fridays do not disappoint. Shop owners host open houses and offer treats and discounts. Eateries offer specials and make sure they are ready for the crowd. It has been a benefit to business owners and the community.

The Taylor County Arts Council is always having a not to be missed show going on at Gallery 62 West. They have hosted amazing artists over the years and consistently pushed the town to think about what art is. They have had tattoo artists, fire eaters, watercolors, abstract, photographers, musicians, you name it and they have covered the medium.

The Taylor County Historical Society has thrown their doors open wide to host Junior Artists, tours, and fascinating presentations on Taylor County.

Their Junior Art Exhibit was a smashing success that folks are still talking about.

Are you hungry? There are always snack set up at various locations downtown. You might find a treat at one of Mary’s spreads at Somethin’ Country or the lovely table at Gallery 62 West. And the coffees smoothies, milkshakes and pastries at Espresso Yourself Coffee House never disappoint. If you want something more substantial stop into Leonard’s for a mouthwatering burger or Capri for one of their famous hoagies.

You never know what rabbit Espresso Yourself Coffee House is going to pull out of their hat for First Fridays. You could walk in to a local musician, open mic night, a play or just folks sitting around enjoying each other and being a part of their community. One thing is for sure, you do not want to miss Donna’s new drink or treat she debuts every first Friday.

Spirit of Grafton Celebration

Every year thousands of people venture downtown for the Spirit of Grafton Celebration. The three-day festival takes place annually over Memorial Day weekend. Attendees are treated to pool parties, amusement rides, carnival foods, games, live entertainment and booths filled with crafts and goodies for all age groups.

The event is held on Main Street in downtown Grafton. During Friday and Saturday downtown is bustling with festival goers making their way from one end of Main Street to the other side to see all the sights and what the vendors have to offer.

Walking through town the smell of kettle corn and cotton candy fills the air, as well as the sounds of laughter from children. Everywhere you look there are stands and food trucks set up. There are also stands set up for good causes such as Alex’s Lemonade Stand Gavin Strong Fund for Neuroblastoma Research. Local crafters line tables in the fire station, where festival goers can purchase anything from crocheted pot holders to homemade soaps and candles.

Various activities and events take place throughout the weekend.

Gallery 62 West plays host to a juried art show. Festival goers can be seen cheering on the BMX riders during their high energy show and be amazed by magicians. Up behind the International Mother’s Day Shrine there is a petting zoo filled with some of the cutest farm animals around.

On Saturday, Arch Coal Leer Mine Complex and the Grafton Rotary Club hosts the annual community picnic, where the community is served hot dogs, chips, sides and drinks free of charge. After getting lunch festival goers can enjoy it on the lawn of the International Mother’s Day Shrine while enjoying a show on the Sprint Stage.

Saturday night, attendees enjoy live music at the Sprint Stage and the night finishes in a big bang with a colorful firework show for the community to enjoy. On Sunday, the festival plays host to gospel music and a car show sponsored by the Grafton Volunteer Fire Department.

With every year, the event grows and grows and the pride of the community shines through. So, make sure to come on downtown during Memorial Day weekend, the festival truly has something for everyone.

For over 70 years, the Taylor County Fair has been providing fun and entertainment to all members of the family. With special performances, games, rides and various track events, the Taylor County Fair truly has something for everyone!

Taylor County Relay for Life

Each year, the Taylor County Relay for Life raises thousands of dollars to aid in the fight against cancer. To do so, teams work diligently all year long to raise money for the American Cancer Society, and a dedicated committee of volunteers work behind the scenes to make sure each relay is a success.

Traditionally held in June, the relay provides a great opportunity for the community to come together and make a difference. There are many volunteer opportunities with Relay for Life including team recruitment, registration, accounting, luminaria, online fundraising, setup, food and beverage sales, public relations, as well as other countless opportunities to make a difference.

Before the relay takes place, survivors are invited to attend the annual Survivor’s Dinner. The survivor, along with one caregiver, is invited to enjoy an evening of fun, food, music and recognition. The dinner is free of charge for those in attendance and is done as a way to honor those who have battled and won against cancer.

Although every Relay for Life event is different, they do have a few things in common. The event starts with an opening ceremony by honoring everyone who’s been affected by cancer and everyone that contributed to the success of this year’s relay.

Because survivors and caregivers are the heart and soul of Relay for Life events, everyone gathers and cheers together for them during special walks honoring each group of people.

Once the sun begins to set, luminarias are placed along the lap route.

During the Luminaria Ceremony, each light represents a life taken by cancer, a survivor of cancer, or support for a person still fighting the disease. During this powerful demonstration people have the opportunity to grieve, but also find comfort and hope.

The closing ceremony is the time to commit to act and help lead the fight for a world free from cancer. During that time, attendees celebrate what they have accomplished together and take time to unify for the work that needs to be done moving forward.

During the evening of support and remembrance, Taylor County Relay for Life holds fun games, chances to purchase delicious food and there is even live music throughout the evening.

Taylor County Walk For Women

During October, many individuals shift their focus to those who have encountered Breast Cancer, showing their support to anyone who has been touched by the disease. Taylor County welcomes residents and guests to their annual display of support for the cause, during their annual Taylor County Walk For Women.

Walk For Women‌Take a Step Against Breast Cancer is a special time where friends, family and community members can come together to help support and honor those ladies, and gentlemen, who have been affected

by Breast Cancer.

Family Support Specialist WVDHHR and Walk for Women organizer Alicia Lyons shared that the event is great for people of all ages. Walk For Women‌ Take a Step Against Breast Cancer is a community event that is fun for families and individuals. It provides a special time for education about the importance of cancer prevention and early treatment.

The Walk usually features games and activities for the community to take part in, raffles and a chance to purchase items from vendors. In the past, it has even featured a 5K race. But the main star of the event is the walk, where individuals wearing pink, walk along with their friends, family and community members in support.

During the special ceremony, friends and loved ones of those who have been diagnosed share their stories. Although the day is filled with fun, laugher and camaraderie, there is a time of reflection to honor those who have passed from the horrible disease.

All proceeds from the event will be used to help with education, prevention and treatment of breast cancer through the West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Diagnostic and Treatment Fund (D&T Fund).

The D&T Fund provides financial assistance to West Virginia women who are in need of breast and cervical diagnostic and/or treatment services. Women must be recommended by their health care providers and meet eligibility guidelines.

Female residents of West Virginia, who are 65 years of age or younger and who have an income below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level are eligible to receive help through the fund. They may not have insurance of any kind and Has been evaluated by a WV licensed physician, hospital, or laboratory and is found to be in need of breast or cervical diagnostic and/ or treatment services.

ArtStock The Annual ArtStock Festival, held at Hartland Lake Marie grows bigger and bigger with each passing year. Admission for the festival is free and open to the public.

The Artstock Festival was first created by Donna and Tom Hart and the late Larry Bartosh, founding members of Buffalo Flats Artists Association, as a day to celebrate all things creative. Bartosh died suddenly before the initial ArtStock, and therefore, every ArtStock carries a bit of him with it.

The 2019 ArtStock shirt had a quote from Bartosh that reads, “Be kind. Be generous. Make the world a better place.”

And ArtStock is indeed a day in a kind, relaxed, joyous place, where community members and guests can buy, display, perform, view, and enjoy art in its many and varied forms.

Beginning with outdoor yoga led by Appalachian Flow’s instructor Breanna Collins, the day was off to a great start.

Vendors show up Friday night and early Saturday morning to set up their booths selling jewelery, soaps, woodworking, pottery, books, photography, baked goods and much more.

Throughout the day, at the stage in the middle of the festivities, local artists perform their own songs, as well as some favorite staples.

During the day, everyone is invited to leave their mark on the canvas wall that lines one side of the pond every year. Discussion was had about the possibility of displaying the wall somewhere downtown.

Throughout the past three four years, Arch Coal’s Leer Mining Complex has been set up as a food vendor, serving up waffles, loaded baked potatoes, hot dogs, walking tacos as well as other delicious offerings.

Local teens take the time to gather and get creative with a special art project of their own. In the past, they have painted a piano and created cornhole boards featuring some of the area’s most well known icons.

The 5th Annual ArtStock will be held on September 12th 2020, and the Harts would love to welcome you to be a part of the excitement, whether you would like to sell your wares, hold a special demonstration, pass out information about a cause that’s close to your heart or to just come and experience the wonder that is ArtStock.

Vendor fees are $35 for juried exhibitors, $25 for non profits and $65 for food vendors. The Festival hours are from 10-6, and vendors are asked to have their booths set up by 8:30 a.m., Saturday morning.

Farm and Artisan Market

Starting in late May, Taylor county residents and visitors can visit the Taylor County Farm & Artisan Market to fill their baskets with fresh fruits and vegetables and much more.

Not just a Farmers market but also an Artisan Market, there are a variety of goods for the public to purchase. The market offers a huge array of fresh locally grown produce, local honey, baked goods, farm fresh pork, chair massages, jewelry, wood crafts, local grown melons and much more.

Located in a lovely grassy area behind Hardcore Hunters at 1102 West Main Street, the market just finished a very successful season.

The market was established in 2016 by the owner of Hardcore Hunters, Sam McCloy. Sam saw the need for a weekend Farmers market and immediately went to work securing the area behind their store. The visibility and accessible location has been a blessing for vendors and customers. It is also held on a flat piece of land making it easy for all to shop.

Many visitors to the market also stay and enjoy lunch or a snack from the food truck or vendors at the picnic tables that the owners set up for the enjoyment of the community. Each Saturday, vendors set up to sell crafts, concessions, art, baked goods, farm fresh eggs, vegetables, fruits and various other enticing treats, including hotdogs, hamburgers and nachos.

The Taylor County Farm & Artisan Market is a great place to run into neighbors and enjoy catching up while stocking your kitchens full of local produce for the week.

The market runs on Saturdays form 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., and is located at 1102 West Main Street Grafton, right behind Hardcore Hunters.

The market has one rule, as long as it is homemade, it can be sold at the market, and organizers are always looking for new vendors to join their ranks. The vendor fee is a very reasonable at only $5.00.

All Aboard Grafton

All Aboard Grafton is a group of citizens of Taylor County that have come together to foster progress by improving life in Grafton and Taylor County. The group started four years ago after the completion of Turn This Town around and have only gained momentum over the years.

All Aboard Grafton has been instrumental in working with the city, county and other organizations to complete many projects beneficial to Taylor County. They worked with the city and Leer Mine to build Toad Hall out of the building that the late Larry Bartosh gave them. Toad Hall has been a meeting place, a stage and a dance hall, as well as serving many other functions for the town.

They were also the driving force behind the community gardens, which offer a garden space to those that might need one to grow fresh vegetables and flowers. Along with the community garden, they also started a farmer’s market downtown. The Grafton Farmers market is now on hiatus while All Aboard Grafton works with the city to renovate an old freight station into a year-round market. Another project in the works.

All Aboard has done too many wonderful things in the community to name, but their latest is working with the City of Grafton and the Manos Steering Committee to reopen the Manos Theatre. They worked closely with the Steering Committee to help with the Born and Bred Music Festival, this year’s major fundraiser for the Manos. They spent time setting up the festival, pulling it down and worked the entire festival from open to close.

They are a non-profit 501(c)(3) , they do have a board and members that pay a yearly due of $12 to be able to vote, but the door is open to anyone in Taylor County that wants to attend.

Between major projects, they keep themselves busy organizing city clean up days, free or reduced entertainment opportunities for the community and weeding the community garden just to name a few.

All Aboard Grafton meets at noon on Thursdays and 12:00 p.m., typically at Jerry’s Restaurant, to share and implement projects for the community. They are open meetings and all members of the community are encouraged and welcome to attend. Historical and Genealogical Society

It has been said that in order for a community for to know where they are going, they must first know where they have been, and one local organization is working to ensure all Taylor County residents and guests know of the county’s rich past.

The Taylor County Historical and Genealogical Society is a community organization who strives to support historical and genealogical issues, projects, and events throughout Taylor County. It is the mission of the Historical Society to construct an organization that will serve the interest of its members, as well as, all others who may have concern for the history and genealogy of Taylor County.

House in one of the area’s most memorable and notable building, the Merchants & Mechanics Bank Building, the society is determined to protect and preserve any buildings, exhibits, and information of the historical and genealogical nature as deemed necessary for the enjoyment of future generations.

The society’s collection of historical documentation has been collected over many years, and has recently undergone some organization.

The Society’s collection, combined with the Taylor County Public Library collection, includes over 1200 volumes, microfilm, pedigree charts, and family group sheets. The collection includes local cemetery records, Taylor County birth, death, and marriage records from 1853-1980 on microfilm, along with Census records and indexes for Taylor County and other West Virginia counties. With the combined collections, Taylor County provides one of the best local genealogical and historical collections in the area.

Not only does the society focus on the county’s past, but is also looking toward their future. Teaming up with local organizations such as the Taylor County Arts Council and the Taylor County Collaborative Family Resource Network, they often take part in Grafton’s monthly First Friday Events, opening their doors for presentations and sometimes even movie nights. This year, the Taylor County Historical Society once again teamed up with the Taylor County Arts Council, hosting their first ever youth-run art gallery, TCAC Jr. The society works to preserve Taylor County’s past, helping to ensure that it is on its way to a bright future. For those interested in helping with their mission, the society meets on the third Saturday of January, March, May, July, September and November, at 9:00 a.m., at 107 W. Main Street, in downtown Grafton, WV. The Historical Society is always welcoming new members, who can join in their efforts of preserving the area’s rich history. Memberships can be pur-chased, and Annual Membership fees are as follows: individual memberships are $20.00, $30.00 for couples residing at the same mailing address and $15.00 for children under 18 years old. Taylor County Senior Center

For many years the Taylor County Senior Citizens Center has provided seniors in the county with vital services. The Taylor County Senior Citizens Center is funded by the West Virginia Commission on Aging, United Way, Melvin B. Sprigg Estate and by private donations.

The Senior Center provides services to persons 60 years of age and older, irrespective of sex, race, creed, color, national origin, political affiliation, belief, or handicap. The center provides vital services and activities for seniors, including meals five days a week, letter reading and writing, transportation, grocery shopping and other outings, which are possible through a levy.

The center offers healthy, balanced meals from noon to 1:00 p.m., Monday through Friday at the center. Individuals with limited transportation can call the center a day ahead and some-one from the center can come pick them up for events at the center or for dinner.

The center also offers homebound meals Monday through Friday. To qualify, individuals must be over 60 and disabled. The meals not only allow seniors who can’t cook to have a fresh meal each day, the meals also offer seniors an opportunity to socialize.

The centers also provide social workers, as well as in home/personal care for eligible members. In-home assistance can include many things such as preparing meals, running errands, doing laundry and offering companionship, just to name a few. In-home care lets seniors stay in their own homes as long as possible.

Seniors are welcome to come to the center and participate in many activities Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. During those times, seniors can come out to the center and play board games, bingo, musical performances, holiday celebrations and partake in different craft projects.

The Adventure Club

The Taylor County Adventure Club is on a mission to get the community up and moving, with fun and exciting outdoor recreational to the Tygart River watershed communities. The club’s goal is to help grow tourism and put Grafton on the map, to do this they have started a campaign to advertise the resources they have and bring new and fun activities to the area.

The Adventure Club is proud to be an active member in the betterment of Taylor County, and takes pride in the activities that they facilitate. Activities such as rafting, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, hunting, and bike riding will engage the community and give them something to be excited about.

These events promote physical health as well as the health of the communities involved.

Some of the events and activities that club has hosted include the Tour of Taylor County Bike Race, Adventures of the Beaten Path, Hot Summer Nights Motorcycle Rally, Adventures on the Green Golf Tournament, The Great Taylor County Turkey Shoot, Adventure Fest and more.

Their Lazy River has become a favorite of residents and guests. The lazy river begins as soon as the water temperatures come up. Floaters loaded their tubes at the city park, at the base of the Tygart Dam, and floated approximately two hours down the Tygart River.

Over the summer the club saw great success with its Lazy River. According to Executive Director Bryan Smith, the soothing ride down the waters of the Tygart has gained a great deal of notoriety. This year, the number of people taking advantage of the stress-free float has grown leaps and bounds from last year.

Another event over the summer was the annual Adventure Fest. The fest brought the love of the outdoors to downtown Grafton and to the Tygart Lake State Park. Attendees enjoyed a weekend filled with activities, vendors, tournaments, live music, barbeque cook offs, kayak racing, fishing and much more.

The club has more ideas of fun adventures for area residents and guests that they are trying to bring to fruition but are looking to the community for their support and input.

The Adventure Club is certainly bringing new and exciting outdoor activities to the folks in Taylor County and is looking forward to what’s to come.
