CHRIS RANDOLPH Head Coach | Boys Basketball

Waskom, Texas native Chris Randolph begins his 3rd season with the Rattlers. The first two years were a smashing success as he led his varsity basketball teams to District championships both seasons. In 2018-19, his Rattlers finished the year as the Regional runner ups.

He came to Navasota after having spent two years at Center High School. Previously he had coaching stops at both Douglass High School and Fort Hays State University in Kansas and Little River Academy High School in Texas. He has 11 years of experience in education. He attended Friends University and Fort Hays State University in Kansas. Married to Arianna the couple have a two-year old son, Cullen. Coach Randolph teaches History in addition to his coaching duties.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

TOMMY GATES Head Coach | Girls Basketball

Tommy Gates enters year 23 at Navasota High School and year 35 in the education profession. A native of Waco, Gates holds a Bachelor’s degree from Texas Wesleyan and a Master’s degree from the University of Nevada-Reno. He arrived in Navasota in 1998 after previous coaching stops in Comanche, University of Nevada Reno and Hillsboro. During his stint in Rattler Nation, Gates has served as Assistant Athletic Director, Girl’s Athletic Coordinator and the girls basketball coach. Gates reached a coaching milestone in 2019 winning his 800th career game.

His teams have qualified for the playoffs 21 of the past 22 years, won 11 district championships, advanced to the regional tournament seven times and to the state tournament once. Gates is married to Jeni and they have three children: Jersey (who is his assistant at Navasota), Jayce and Jasmine.

ISAIAH THOMPSON Head Coach | Boys Soccer Assistant Football Coach

Coach Thompson returns for his fourth season in Navasota. This will be his 8th year overall having coached previously in his hometown of Tatum.

Thompson played football and earned a degree from the University of Houston. He then played professionally for the Buffalo Bills in the NFL and the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL. He has led the Rattler boys’ soccer team into the playoffs three consecutive years. He is married to Tessa. Coach Thompson is also a history teacher at Navasota Junior High.

CARLYN NICHOLS Head Coach | Girls Soccer

Caryln Nichols is beginning her 3rd year in Navasota and her second at Navasota Lady Rattler Head Soccer Coach. The Dickson, Texas native is a graduate of Sam Houston State University where she played on the soccer team. She previously spent two years as the head volleyball and soccer coach at Florence High School. She is married to Zach, the Rattler head baseball coach.

Head Coach | Boys Powerlifting Donn Miller returns to the Rattler staff for his fourth year. This will be his 9th year coaching. Coach Miller had prior coaching stops at St. Joseph Catholic High School in Bryan and Copperas Cove High School.

He attended Blinn College and earned a Bachelors degree from Texas A & M. He is married to Katelyn.

Coach Miller teaches History at the high school.

COLEIGH KOON Head Coach | Girls Powerlifting

Coleigh Koon begins her second year at Navasota ISD. She is a graduate of Shepherd High school and obtained a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches. Koon was a powerlifter throughout high school setting many records throughout her area. She qualified for regionals and state all three years and received an offer from Sam Houston State University to lift. At Navasota High Koon teaches five subjects - Instructional Practices, Principles of Education, Child Guidance, Child Development and Professional Communications. She has been in education on and off for 13 years and previously operated her own wedding venue. Koon has a son and a daughter. Her daughter Chandler is two and son Braxton is one.

JEFFREY TRANT Head Coach | Boys Basketball

Jeffrey Trant enters his fourth year as a teacher and coach at Anderson-Shiro CISD. This is his second season as basketball head coach.

Additionally, Trant is on the football coaching staff. Trant studied health and kinesiology at Sam Houston State University. He previously taught and coached in Caldwell and Iola. Trant currently teaches seventh grade Texas history and science. Trant has been married to Traci Rekieta for nine years and they have three children together, Lilee age eight, Luke age five, and Liam is almost two.

RANDY FOY

Head Coach | Girls Basketball Randy Foy returned to Anderson-Shiro to coach in 2012. He attended Prairie View A&M, Blinn College and obtained his bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University where he met his wife Rachel. In May 2015 Foy obtained his master’s degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration. Foy took his first teaching job in Angleton where he taught and coached for seven years and married after his first year before returning to Anderson-Shiro.

He teaches and is the head cross country, girls’ basketball, and tennis coach. Foy and his wife have two young daughters, Mila age eight, and Brooklynn age seven.

BILL COWLEY Head Coach | Powerlifting

Bill Cowley is in his fourth-year teaching and coaching at Anderson-Shiro CISD. Overall, he is in his 11th year in education and currently teaches Government and Economics. In addition to his powerlifting head coaching role, Cowley also coaches football and track. His previous teaching and coaching stops include Athens, Palestine and Madisonville. Personally, Cowley has been married to his wife Abby for 10 years. They have two daughters, Emma age 10 and Ella age four.

MARC MINATREA Head Coach | Boys Basketball

Houston native Marc Minatrea was promoted from within to take over as head coach for the Iola Boys’ Basketball Team, previously serving as Iola’s assistant coach. Minatrea graduated from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and a minor in history. He has 23 years of coaching experience serving as head coach at Cameron Yoe and Killeen Shoemaker. He’s also assisted at Rosebud-Lott, Killeen Ellison and A&M Consolidated. Mantrea’s wife Jill is an elementary teacher with Bryan ISD. He has a son and a daughter. His son Luke is a senior at Iola and plays basketball and baseball. His daughter Mia is an eighth-grader at A&M Consolidated Middle School.

JOHN REED

Head Coach | Girls Basketball This is the first year with John Reed at the helm as the girls’ basketball head coach. Reed has been with Iola ISD for four years and spent the previous three years as an assistant coach in basketball, football and as the head boys track coach. Reed is a 1998 graduate of Montgomery High School and 2002 graduate of Texas A&M University. Throughout his 17-years of coaching experience, he spent three at Hearne, 10 years at Anderson-Shiro and four in Iola. In addition to coaching basketball, Reed also is the head coach for the girls’ track team and an assistant volleyball coach. He also teaches junior high social studies. Reed has been married to his wife Shala for 14 years and they have two daughters, Isabel, age 12, and Madison, age 10.
