Management & Training Corporation (MTC) is a privately-held corporation with headquarters in Centerville, Utah. Since 1987, MTC has proven to be a leader in the management and operation of private correctional facilities. MTC currently operates two local correctional facilities in Rusk County, the East Texas Treatment Facility and Billy Moore Correctional Center which staff over 600 employees from Rusk County and surrounding areas. We are proud to be a part of Rusk County and strongly believe in supporting local communities.

East Texas Treatment Facility is the largest treatment facility in the state of Texas, which provides cognitive treatment to both male and female offenders. Billy Moore Correctional Center is located in Overton, Texas, Rusk County. BMCC is a 500 bed, all male rehabilitation facility and is accredited through the American Correctional Association. The facility provides year round maintenance and community service for the City of Overton.

To my fellow citizens: As your Chamber President, I first want to say welcome to our community and express my appreciation for the love we all have and show for our community. Sometimes, saying thank you is not enough; however, when I think of our community I think of Helping which has been a part of who I am and who we are as a community. Excellence, which our community continues to strive to portray great qualities and abilities being quick to say, “I am from Henderson.” Noble, being a people of high rank having a level of character, morals, and our town being recognized as an active retirement community. Devoted, people from Henderson believe in getting involved in taking care of where we live. Empowering, providing an opportunity for connection. Respect, supporting one another regardless of age, gender, race, or creed. Solidarity, the recognition that we are all in this together, committed to strengthening our community. Optimism, despite lower economic confidence nationwide many folks living in Henderson, say they are

satisfied with the place they call home. Networking, a fabric of togetherness having a solid foundation in every decision made keeping our community on track preparing generations to come, and making Henderson a great place to call home.

As we move forward into this new year closing the books on one of the most tumultuous times in the recent history of Coronavirus, I ask that our community remain steadfast in the faith, showing value to one another, praising one another’s efforts, and rewarding each other’s performance. For we know vision starts within our community, vision draws on our history, and vision is what makes The City of Henderson.

enderson Chamber of Commerce first organized February 26, 1926 in a meeting held in the city’s Southwestern Hotel. Since then, the Chamber has led the way for Henderson as it moved through critical areas of growth and development.

In 1926, more than 100 members joined that first night, according to records, and the group pledged $10,000 to cover the first year’s operating expenses.

Until 1955, the Chamber maintained an office in the historic Randolph Hotel in downtown Henderson and continued to hold meetings and banquets there until the facility closed in 1969.

The Chamber office moved to North Main Street, then relocated in 1978, to the current office at 201 North Main Street. Since 1926, the Chamber has operated under three names: Henderson Chamber of Commerce; Rusk County Chamber of Commerce; and Henderson Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber’s mission statement: “It is the role of the Henderson Area Chamber of Commerce to serve the community through business. This service incorporates promotion of new and existing businesses, as well as industry, community development, unity, education and communication.

Every year at the annual Chamber banquet the awards for the following are presented: John R. Alford Young Man of the Year, Louise Jacks Young Woman of the Year, William Ashby Lifetime Achievement Award, Small Business Excellence

Award, Large Business Excellence Award, Ambassador, and Silver Star of the Year award.

As the Chamber promotes new and existing businesses, as well as builds good will in the community, we encourage our community to Stay, Shop, and Support our local businesses.

Letter from Rusk County Judge

Joel Hale This has been a doozy of a year for Rusk County and the entire country. It would be a great time to ask Roger Staubach “How do you spell relief?” Texas Comptroller, Glen Hegar, says the economy has been bruised and I think we can all agree with that statement, but now is not the time to give up. We are lucky that we live in a great country. I believe that with all my heart regardless of the negative events that have plagued our country for the past year.

We are Texans and we come from good stock. This county and the entire country have survived through traumatic events in the past and we will again. Our values have carried us for generations and they will in the future. Your Rusk County Commissioners Court and all the elected officials of Rusk County keep those values in the forefront when any decision is made.

Let’s keep our goals and our attitudes pointed ahead with the objective of leaving things better than they were when we got here.

Greetings from City Hall: I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for being a part of the City of Henderson as a resident, visitor, business owner, student or any other interested party. Our people are what makes Henderson a great place to live, work and play. The City’s Mayor, City Council and Staff work diligently every day to meet and soar above the expectations of our citizens and business owners.

Our Main Street area in Historic Downtown Henderson continues to be a popular destination for people to visit. Our great downtown businesses are a gem, and walk-ability is incredible in this area. The parks in the City of Henderson have been a focal point of the City for several years and we take great pride in them. Walking trails, a dog park, a disc golf course, splash pads, a skate park and multiple pavilions are among some of the attractions you will find in our parks.

Henderson thrives because of the relationships and partnerships within the City from every organization and association. One of the City’s most important partnerships is with the Henderson Area Chamber of Commerce.

enderson Independent School District’s 20202021 school year has been unprecedented. Back in August, we committed to doing everything within our power to ensure that even in the midst of a global pandemic, our students would not just learn the required basics but they would thrive and excel! To that end, the employees of HISD worked diligently to overcome challenges previously unimaginable in education. With an emphasis on transparency along with constant community updates on COVID-19 issues, our teachers and staff showed courage and grit as they dedicated themselves to one purpose: doing what was best for kids. Our students deserve nothing less.

Although the procedures have changed, our district vision remains the same: empowering all students to achieve their dreams.

Over the past few years, Henderson ISD has focused on improving teaching and learning. We have implemented new leadership programs that equip teacher specialists to work on the front lines with teachers and staff to improve student growth. At the high

school, we have invested in state-of-the-art, career technology classrooms like our professional culinary arts kitchen and our modern health science clinic where students can earn recognized certifications and receive hands-on experience. In 2015, the district opened a new, $28.4 million middle school replacing a facility that had been in use since the early 1950’s. Lion Stadium, located between Stadium and Lion Streets, opened two years with a renovated field house, artificial turf, and a video scoreboard. The stadium was funded by Grady Ash, a 1951 HHS graduate, who donated nearly $6 million for the improvements and as well as millions more for student scholarships.

Henderson ISD is rated an “A” district by the State Accountability standards using the most recent results available. With only 25% of districts in the state receiving this highest rating, the designation is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the people at Henderson ISD. Regardless of the obstacles, we will continue to push forward, leading the way in preparing students to become productive, life-long learners who value excellence and integrity.

32nd Annual Heritage Syrup Festival

H

enderson is proud to host a unique fall festival each year commemorating the early history of Rusk County.

From 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on the second Saturday in November, the historic downtown and the Depot Museum grounds become bustling centers of activity featuring craftsmen and folk artists, as well as outstanding food vendors and fun-filled children’s activities.

Craftsmen and folk artists from a four-state area join with local artists to

commemorate the tradition of ribbon cane syrup making at East Texas’ first and largest folk art event.

The highlight of the day is a syrup making demonstration using a mule-powered antique syrup mill on the grounds of the Depot Museum, 514 North High St. More than 40 unique folk artists demonstrate a variety of pioneer crafts, antique tractors and musical entertainment at the Museum.

The festivities spread from the Depot grounds to historic downtown located in the National Register Historic District.

vendors, more than 150 antique and classic cars, live musical entertainment, cloggers, square dancers, a children’s area and a melodrama performed in the civic theater building. A variety of great food is featured at both the Depot and downtown locations.

A hayride shuttle sponsored by Henderson 4-H Clubs transports visitors between the Depot and downtown.

Henderson Civic Theatre

H

enderson Civic Theatre is in the midst of its 34th season and taking advantage of its new annex located adjacent to the theatre on East Main Street in downtown Henderson.

The annex allowed HCT to expand its lobby and give it approximately 16-foot

ceilings with restored ceiling tiles and a concession stand in the far right side.

The concession stand has a large cased opening where people can walk up and place their order.

From the new main lobby, a large hallway extends backward with the continuation of high ceilings. On the right side of the hallway is a smaller

theatre, roughly 24-feet by 54-feet, that can be used for a dinner theatre and can be rented for meetings, wedding receptions, birthday parties, lectures and other events.

T

he Rusk County Airport is home to 46 private aircraft and offers a well-maintained terminal, runways, taxiways, and fuel system. The Airport is often the “door” to Henderson and the surrounding communities. Pilots from all over the U.S. stop in for the hospitality and the fuel prices. The Airport is the first impression for a visitor flying into the area, and it is the goal of airport staff to make that first impression a good one.

The Rusk County Airport, and its newly hired manager Alexa McAnally, is working closely with the Greater Henderson Chamber of Commerce and the Henderson Economic Development Corporation (HEDCO) to not only grow the community but to make sure that the Airport stays ahead of this growth.

ast Texas Coalition is a collaborative effort of Chambers in East Texas as they take their community efforts to Austin.

Each year the group focuses on Education, Energy & Economic Development, General Business and Technology, Healthcare and Transportation & Infrastructure.

The top regional priority for the East Texas region is the development of a medical school in East Texas within the University of Texas System. A medical school in East Texas will positively impact all of these initiatives.

Guest speakers included Senator Bryan Hughes, Texas Secretary of State Ruth Hughs, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, Todd Staples and Travis Clardy.

The Henderson Area Chamber of Commerce will be included along with other area Chambers in our region next year. The event always takes place in February.
