A QUICK NOTE FROM: JANICE SCHWANBECK - EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Welcome 2021! I think we can all agree that we’re happy to have Year 2020 in the rearview mirror. We understand first-hand the challenges that the entire business community has been facing throughout 2020. We have witnessed declarations of state and national emergencies; the cancellation of events; local Covid cases on the rise; and a sudden and widespread emphasis on working from home to slow the spread of this harmful new virus, as well as racial and political unrest. The goal of the chamber has been to supply our members with current information regarding grants, loans, and reopening phases. We hope that you have found the information useful. We were able to finalize the Greenville Economic Steering Committee report. I’m excited to see what we can accomplish once we dig deeper into our Implementation Matrix. This will be an exciting time, and we hope that all of you are ready to pitch in.
Chamber membership runs on a calendar year, so all members receive their renewal invoices to be paid in January. I am humbled to say that we are over half way (at this writing) to receiving all member payments. 2020 has been a difficult year for many businesses; I am grateful for our members’ prompt payments to allow us to continue our work serving them. We continue to look for ways we can help our members. If you’re hosting an event (virtual or in person) let us know; running a special promotion, let us know. Please take advantage of the free webinars being offered by Gannon University Small Business Development Center. We encourage everyone to shop local all year long. Our businesses are depending on you. Join the chamber’s Facebook Group, Shop Local – Greenville. Many businesses have online buying options as well as curbside pickup. Greenville is no stranger to adversity, I know the town will overcome and ultimately thrive. But, we will have to do it together.
While we had had to cancel the majority of our events, the Chamber was able to host our annual golf outing. The support through participating teams and sponsorship was amazing! We continue to gauge the environment in hopes of resuming soon our Chamber Coffee Chats, Grapes & Growlers, and the popular Business Expo.

SHENANGO LAKE: A FAVORITE OF BOATERS
Those looking for the closest destination for lake boating, fishing and swimming will want to head just about 10 minutes south of Greenville to Shenango Reservoir, a man-made lake run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Here are the recreation options visitors can look forward to: BOATING: For some boaters, Shenango River Lake is the ideal local destination because it allows for areas of unlimited horsepower. The U.S. Foundation for Boating Safety has sponsored a life jacket loaner program there, making a number of the safety devices available at the lake’s Shenango Recreation Area Campground, which has more than 300 campsites. The lake is roughly 11 miles long. FISHING: Anglers will find crappie, bass, walleye, bluegill, catfish, perch and sunfish in the lake. The Army Corps of Engineers and volunteers

SWIMMING: The Chestnut Run Swim Beach offers swimming each year from late May to early September under a “swim at your own risk” policy. PYMAT UNING STATE PARK
Pymatuning offers plenty to do on and off the lake You can’t talk about Pymatuning State Park without mentioning its nationally-noted spillway. People come from states away on an annual pilgrimage to throw bread to hoardes of carp. It’s a tradition. But the park, home to the state’s largest lake, and the community and businesses around it also have even more to offer. FISHING AND BOATING: Fishing at Pymatuning Lake is so good that the mascot at the local high school is the muskie — short for the large
gatehouse, but it’s also getting $1 million in work on a walking trail from the spillway to behind Conneaut High School, and a new playground at the Linesville beach. SWIMMING: The lake is maybe best known for its fishing and boating, but visitors and locals looking to take a dip can do so at the Linesville, Main Beach and Beach Two swim beaches. The swimming areas are comporable to those of Presque Isle in Erie and are smoke-free. LOCAL LANDMARKS: Visitors come for the parks themselves, but also for surrouding attractions. Such as the Jamestown Deer Park, where families can feed deer, pet goats, see lions and take a train ride. The town of Jamestown is home to the Gibson Manor, also known as the Mark Twain Manor, after the famous author who once stayed there. Not far from the lake, on East Lake Road, neighboring businesse Mortals Key Brewery, offer wine and craft beer.

CANOEING AND KAYAKING: Multiple local businesses in the Jamestown and Greenville areas offer the chance to rent kayaks, canoes and even tubes for visitors to make their way down the Shenango River, starting just after the Pymatuning Dam, and rowing all the way to the Shenango River Lake. Other plans for the area include connecting the Greenville area with Jamestown, and eventually to Ohio with a bike trail built on a former railroad bed. Mercer County Trails Association has 2021

finished roughly 1.3 miles of the trail from Greenville’s Main Street to Porter Road. The smooth, crushed limestone surface is great for biking, running or walking. CAMPING: Pymatuning offers two camping areas — Linesville Campground and Jamestown
Campground — that are open from midApril through mid-October. The sites offer modern facilities, including showers, flush toilets and roughly half its campsites offer electricity. HUNTING: About 10,300 acres are open to hunting, trapping and the training of dogs.

JUST A SHORT DRIVE FROM PRO SPORTS, WORLD-CLASS MUSEUMS
It’s surprising for some all that Greenville has to offer, but what’s maybe nearly as surprising is everything else that’s just a short drive away. With Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Erie all within a twohour driving radius — and Washington, D.C., New York City and Detroit not that much farther — in a lot of ways, Greenville is in the center of it all. SHOP SMALL Shopping small benefits not only shop owners, but entire community It’s a tradition for a lot of locals. The Saturday after Thanksgiving, people flock to downtown Greenville, and small businesses throughout the area, to support their neighbors and buy things they can’t find anywhere else. But it doesn’t stop with Small Business Saturday. With an intimate knowledge of local businesses — who owns them, what they offer, and what makes them special — Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce helps direct shoppers to the storefronts and businesses it knows will fit them best all year long. Chamber members, themselves, are sure to frequent these proprietors, because not only does it help keep the local economy strong, but the shop owners are also their neighbors.
These businesses pay local taxes — which fund police and fire departments, street repairs and community improvements; they hire locals; they give back to their communities; and do much of their own shopping at other local small businesses. Compare that to big box stores, which CivicEconomics.com says only put 14 cents of that dollar back into the local economy. Small businesses are also important job creators. According to the Small Business Administration, since 1995, small businesses have created about two-thirds of all jobs in the country. By keeping local businesses strong, shoppers ensure their communities stay unique, and one-ofa-kind. You can find a Walmart and a McDonald’s pretty much anywhere, but try finding local honey, key cutting and a sledgehammer in the same place,
The benefits to shopping small are nearly endless, but not always obvious. For example, because they’re invested in their community, small businesses give back more. Just ask anyone raising money for Little League, Greenville’s Heritage Days, or other community efforts. Studies show that every time someone spends a dollar on Main Street, 48 cents goes back into the local economy. 16

like you can in Greenville’s Hurlbert Hardware. Or a restaurant with as much unique aesthetics as The Bent Fork. Or a hometown shop devoted to not only selling shoes, but also fixing them, like the Shoe Hospital. Research also finds that small businesses also provide better customer service. For many of the business owners, not only is that business their livelihood but also their life. So, when customers come in looking for help, business owners are more likely to go the extra mile. That, and they know they’ll run into that customer again at the gas pump, produce aisle or Sunday service. To be sure, those aren’t the only reasons to spend locally. Shopping small also helps keep down taxes, creates and maintains that sense of community spirit, and can even cut down on pollution, as shoppers don’t have to drive as far for the things they want and need.

KAYAKING, DISC GOLF AND PLENTY OF ROOM TO STRETCH YOUR LEGS
Most visitors to northern Mercer County are acquainted with its large lakes, and all that their parks have to offer, but there’s also quite a bit to do in Greenville’s own park — Riverside Park. Nestled against the Shenango River, a lot of visitors are coming for a chance to drop in a kayak or canoe, or rent one from Carried Away Outfitters, but more and more are coming for the disc golf. The nine-hole course sends players around the park, starting behind Carried Away Outfitter’s location. Those who love the sport, can also play at Pymatuning State Park, Brandy Springs Park in Mercer and Buhl Park in Sharon. Riverside Park is also a draw for runners and bikers, who utilize its paved loop and connection to a Greenville-Jamestown bike trail, which starts at the West Mail Hill, travels to Porter Road, and is expanding to Jamestown, and eventually the state line.

Children love the Kingdom at Riverside large shipshaped playground; portrait takers take advantage of the picaresque amphitheater; and wildlife lovers find themselves drawn to the nature trail. Just upstream from Greenville is Pymatuning State Park, known for its walleye and muskie fishing, camping, boating, swimming beaches and one-of-akind spillway, where carp gather so densely, ducks and seagulls can walk on their backs. Just to the south of Greenville is the Shenango River Lake, loved by boaters with areas of unlimited horsepower, but to be sure is beloved for fishing as well. To the east is Goddard State Park, with its easily spottable bald eagles, its 12-mile paved bike path and fishing.

GREENVILLE WORKS TO
SUPPORT DEVELOPING, EXISTING BUSINES Starting, running and maintaining a business isn’t easy. Fortunately for local business owners, entrepreneurs and those aspiring to be, the Greenville area has multiple entities looking to help out. For many, it starts with Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce, which serves not only as a clearinghouse for knowledge on local business resources, but also provides its own resources to members, and strives to promote a local environment conducive for business. The Chamber also finds itself often working with two other like-minded entities — Greenville Area Economic Development Corporation (GAEDC) and Greenville-Reynolds Development Corporation (GRDC). GAEDC keeps its eyes on fostering new businesses and drawing existing ones to the Greenville area. The Chamber and GAEDC can help entrepreneurs develop business plans through the Gannon University Small Business Development Center — which has an office at the Chamber office — as well as assist in securing funding and other professional services.
Greenville-Reynolds Development Corporation has a long history of working with industrial and commercial enterprises to find — or develop — locations that fit them within its Reynolds Industrial Park, Reynolds East Business Park and Reynolds North Business Park, some of the land exempt from state and local taxes until 2020. The community itself has also proven its dedication to drawing businesses and helping others start up, too. The Downtown Task Force — a partnership between the chamber, downtown Greenville businesses and the Borough of Greenville — has helped entrepreneurs take the next step through unique initiatives, such as pulling together downtown property owners to all open their available properties on the same day so entrepreneurs can compare and shop. The Greenville Vision Task Force is also meeting with an eye on improving the community’s business climate and finding ways to attract entrepreneurs.

A symphony. Art galleries. Theater. Museums. To find a cultural collection of that caliber, you might think you’d have to fight the traffic of a large city, but you can find it all within Greenville, Pa. Normally reserved for cities, the rural borough is home to its own symphony — the Greenville Symphony Orchestra — since 1929. Hosting seasonal concerts, the collection of talented regional musicians performs at Thiel College’s Passavant Center.
Those intersted in the printed word can pick up The Record-Argus — the community’s daily newspaper printed since 1848 — throughout northern Mercer County, to catch up on the highlights of local sports, events and government, as well as features on some of the community’s most noteworthy residents and initiatives. Greenville Area Public Library also puts in its fair share of work to spread literacy, in addition to offering an extensive catalog, also holding events for kids and adults to spur and foster a love of reading, including one annual favorite event — a ride on “The Polar Express.”
The college, itself, is a wealth of culture, drawing noted musicians and performers from across the country, as well as staging performances in its own black box theater and hosting galleries of regional artists.
Those looking to learn more about the community’s deep, rich history — from its industry, railroads and canals — can find multiple museums dedicated to the endeavor.
The community’s art, though, isn’t limited to Thiel’s campus. Greenville also boasts the Sans MOCO gallery above Fresh Grounds Coffeehouse — a favorite of visitors — giving a platform for some of the area’s most talented artists.
The Waugh House on West Main Street tells the broad tale of the Greenville community, while the Greenville Railroad Park on Main Street and the Greenville Canal Museum offer exhibits and displays on their namesakes.
Those interested in theater can also enjoy seasonal performances from Greenville Area Community Theater and the Penn-Ohio Actors Playhouse.

ANGLERS AND BIKERS
FIND PLENTY TO LOVE ABOUT WILHELM Known for its fishing and boating, Goddard State Park and its Lake Wilhelm have come to be known for even more. BIKING AND RUNNING: Athletes and nature fans make good use of a paved 12-mile loop path around the lake. The loop takes those on foot and on bike over the lake, through the woods and behind the fields of local farmers, all on a solid, smooth, paved surface. EAGLE WATCHING: Once endangered, the Bald Eagle is strong again, especially at Goddard State Park, where at most times, those that keep an eye on the birds report one to two dozen making their home and gliding majestically around the park at any time. The national symbol has become such a draw for the park that it has constructed a special observation area, which also provides facts on the eagle and other nearby creatures. BOATING AND FISHING: To be sure, the 1,680- acre man-made body of water also draws boaters and anglers. Fishermen cast their lines for largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, muskie, bluegill, catfish, perch and sunfish, and the lake offers a 20-horsepower cap, a large marina and multiple areas to drop a boat into the water. WINE TASTING: Wilhelm Winery, located about a mile and a half up Georgetown Road from the Goddard Park office, has been offering wine since 2000. The winery offers blush, red and white wines, as well as fruit wines including blackberry, blueberry, and sometimes elderberry. Lake Wilhelm, which was created through a state-built dam in 1971, is about a 20-minute drive from downtown Greenville. 24
