THE YEAR WAS 1946. The second world war had been over for less than a year and Oliver and Oretta Holderread opened Cushing Lumber on the site of the former Holderread Grocery Store — the store that Oliver’s father, Fred Holderread, founded decades earlier.

Lumber had opened a location in Oilton and a store was located in Stroud in 1970.

“It didn’t take them long to figure out that this was better than the grocery business,” said Blakemore, who now runs the family builder’s supply store at 924 East Main Street, in Cushing.

“Working construction helped me more than anything,” he said.

Calling himself the “head custodian,” Ryan said he does a little bit of every job at the company.

“I wear a lot of hats,” he said. I love to spend time at the counter. That’s part of the business that you’ve got to do.

I can do anything at the store and, in my position, you’ve got to do a little of everything. If everyone in the company has done every task, communication’s much better.

Ryan said that Cushing Lumber is feeling setbacks caused by the pandemic with a slowdown in business as well

as limited availability of materials and products.

“Right now,” he said, “the time frame on windows is a 10-week wait. I can get high-end Pella windows faster than I can get less expensive windows.”

In December of 2004, Real Blakemore married Jillian Hibbard. They have a daughter Brittan, who is 13 and a son Barrett, who is 11.

Jillian owns and operates Dance Star Productions, which she opened in 2000.

Ryan said he was always into sports as a kid and has carried that love of sports on to coaching Cushing’s youth teams.

He does it for the young people of the city, saying that there are kids out there who don’t have it so good and he feels like he can help these kids through

coaching. This same philosophy carries over to Jillian’s work at the dance studio.

“We both love working with kids,” he said.

The Blakemore’s work in securing Cushing’s future through its youth is a reflection of how they feel about their community.

“I love Cushing,” he said. “Cushing’s been good to us. I enjoy this community and its people. I hate to see good people leave.”

Ryan feels that Cushing needs to secure its future by planning ahead.

“We’re based on oil,” he said. “We need to diversify. We’ve got all our eggs in one basket.”

h how time flies! The Right Path was founded in 1996 by Leslie Kirkland.

The Right Path is a 501c3 non-profit and PATH Intl. premier accredited organization.

“A horse provides legs for those who cannot walk, and eyes for those who cannot see. A horse can take us places that we’ve never gone before: physically, emotionally, and spiritually,” says Kirkland.

While focusing on your balance and strength, riding horses causes your core muscles to gain strength and can reduce muscle tension — which is great for people with special needs.

The right Path offers four main programs: Williams Walk Therapeutic Riding and Cart-Driving, Trailblazers Youth Enhancement, Hooves on the Ground Veterans and Horse Tales Literacy Project, all of which targets people with disabilities.

William’s Walk Therapeutic Riding and Cart-Driving, is Right Path’s core and original program, named after William Ocker, who passed away in 2015, at the age of eight.

William’s mom, Joshalyn Ocker, joined as The Right Path Operations Director in 2012, after witnessing the amazing benefits of therapeutic riding for her son.

The right Path has served people with Down’s Syndrome, Rett’s Syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, blindness, multiple sclerosis and other developmental disabilities. Students with disabilities receive help with educational and social cognitive development, along with order, and basic horsemanship skills.

Horse Tales Literacy Project involves Title I schools, 18 classes, and about 350 students. Each student in the class, usually made up of first graders, is given two free books. Students also receive a picture of their horse and teachers are given a set of curriculum lesson plans that incorporate a broad spectrum to encourage literacy through the study of horsemanship.

In most cases, Right Path staff members actually bring the horse inside the classrooms, to let kids get first hand experience.

In the spring, the kids go out to the ranch, where they get to read to their horse and participate in activities.

Enhancement program is a nique program for at-risk youth, combining the love of horses with the joy of learning. Students who participate focus on educational enhancement while learning life skills, character traits, and horsemanship. This program is for youth ages 11 to 16 who are facing difficult life challenges that might increase their chances of being incarcerated, dropping out of school, or be placed in foster care.

“These are kids who don’t necessarily have a disability, just a challenging life,” said Kirkland.

“Don Kirkland, Leslie’s husband, has a great way with working with these kids, teaching them the character qualities it takes to be a successful business man/woman, by teaching character through horsemanship,” says Julie Jones, The Right Path’s head of public relations.

Mini Adventures, another one of The Right Path’s programs, takes mini horses to visit hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and other places, to offer joy, comfort, stress reduction, and increase socialization. The ability to develop a special connection with

animals and participate in a gentle activity can also assist with motor, cognitive, and physical skills.

Hooves on the Ground (HOTG) is a restorative experience that empowers disabled military Veterans, active duty military, and first responders to develop a strong sense of accomplishment, reduce anxiety, build a trusting relationship with their horse and mentors, and learn basic horsemanship skills.

“Our program design utilizes these characteristics to benefit veterans dealing with issues related to emotional and/or physical wounds suffered as a result of their service,” said Kirkland.

Often, Veterans who deal with PTSD and traumatic brain injury, feel disconnected from the world.

“Our program helps re-engage the Veteran by helping him or her create meaningful partnerships with a horse, veteran mentor, and support staff,” says Kirkland Kirkland said The Right Path’s focus for this year is securing their funding and programs so that they can continue

City of Cushing Overcoming challenges of the past year.

MEISNER Although Cushing is a small, rural community, its city government provides the amenities and services of a big city, with a respected police force and a fire department that includes full paramedic-level services and state-of-the art facilities that house the equipment necessary to handle even the worst sort of storage tank blaze. Cushing also maintains a large public pool and water park, indoor and outdoor youth recreation facilities and a collection of well-kept parks.

Although 2020 brought on its share of unexpected challenges, Cushing City Manager Terry Brannon said work continued to prepare the city for a major renovation to Main Street (SH 33) scheduled this fall.

City crews and contractors have completed work moving the utilities around the intersections of Little and Main and Linwood and Main in preparation for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation’s widening and rehabilitation of those intersections.

Brannon said that the city has acquired nearly all the necessary rights of way and easements from property owners along Main Street to allow for the much-needed resurfacing and widening of the street and the installation of new sidewalks and curbing.

Other civic improvements include what Brannon calls a significant upgrade to the computerized control system at the electrical power plant.

Over the course of 2020, the city worked to repave nearly 5 lane miles of residential city streets and installed 1,500 feet of sewer line extension in the city’s northeast neighborhoods.

The City of Cushing is governed by a five-member board of commissioners.

“The commission has positioned the city’s staff to be able to accomplish so much within the resource pool that we have today,” said Brannon. “We are able to get a lot of stuff done. We have a fantastic group of men and women at the City of Cushing. It begins with the elected officials, but I can’t praise our team enough — throughout our organization, from clerical to parks, to emergency management, police, fire, public works — through resources and commitment, our city team brings it every day. That has nothing to do with me. It has everything to do with the staff and the governing body.”

Brannon said that overcoming the challenges of 2020 revealed Cushing’s resiliency.

“This will manifest itself in the way we bounce back,” he said.

BY J. D. MEISNER The Cushing Public School district is going on its fourth year of designation as as a Google Reference District and Superintendent Koln Knight said this is a great example of the district’s commitment to provide the highest quality education to its students.

Knight said that the district hasn’t made any major changes or improvements to it facilities or programs over the past year, which he says is an indication that everything is working the way it should.

“It’s nice to have things going smooth,” he said.“Our technology is about as good as it gets, right now,” said Koln Knight, Superintendent.

“We have Google Chromebooks for every child, from second grade on up through high school.”

Cushing is only one of two school districts in the state that use Google tools in the classroom.

“If any other school districts are interested in how the Chromebooks are integrated into the curriculum they can come and visit our district,” Knight said. “If they had something they wanted to promote to another district, Google would reference Cushing as a district to come and look at.”

Knight said that the district is working with the City of Cushing at the baseball field where the old concrete bleachers were demolished and new bleachers should arrive in February and a new dressing room, locker room and concession stand will be built.

For the last six years, the district has been off the state funding formula.

“Our local funding has allowed us to buy classroom materials, technology, and perform facility improvement repairs out of our operating budget,” said Knight. “There’s very few districts that can do that.”

Knight explained that 2018 was the district’s third year of being off state aid.

“Once we got to the point where we went off state aid, and then we still get growth, that’s extra revenue for the school district,” Knight said, adding that the district still gets money from the state for things like bussing and insurance, but the amount is minimal.

Knight said there are future plans to build new elementary schools just south of the middle school, after the current bond expires in 2023.

“If you go to the high school, you see ‘Lifelong Learning, Lifelong Success,’ and that’s something we truly work for, and we’re always trying to work to provide our teachers with the materials and the resources to help their kids to prepare for the future,” Knight said.

Cushing Public Schools has 1,826 students enrolled in one of the district’s five campuses: Cushing Pre-Kindergarten, Cushing Lower Elementary, Cushing Upper Elementary, Cushing Middle School and Cushing High School.

Knight said that the district is still working with its insurance provider on the earthquake damage from 2016.

The district is one of the only self-funded districts in the state, relying primarily o ad valor tax revenues and not the Oklahoma State department of Education.

While this funding is preferable to state funding, it does come with it’s own set of challenges.

Knight said that a number of energy companies protested the Freeport exemption ruling handed down by Payne County Tax Assessor James Cowan, which could have an impact on how well, or how poorly the district is funded going forward.

“We can afford to be patient with this,” said Knight. “it could come out

Cushing Youth & Community Center

T

he Cushing Youth and Community Center has been a fixture in Cushing for decades and more and more people are using the 27,000 square foot facility every day.

“Our facility is equipped to provide a fun, safe, and healthy environment for all ages,” said Youth Center Director Mike Wilson.

The center provides weight rooms for men and women, a cardio room, basketball gym, a game room with pool tables, and an aerobics room.

“We also have a youth sports program for young people aged 4 through 12 that is played throughout the calendar year,” Wilson said. “If you are looking to live a healthier life style or maybe you want your child to participate in a sporting event, the Cushing Youth Center is the right place for you.”

The facility even has a large conference room which can be rented to host reunions and parties. Rental fees for that room range from $40 for one or two hours to $100 for up to eight hours.

The center also hosts a youth sports program offering baseball, basketball, football, soccer, and wrestling.

This year, new treadmills were added to the center’s cardio room and Wilson said they added a squat rack, leg extension leg curl machine, a lap pull down machine and a preacher curl machine to the men’s weight room.

2019 was the first year the center offered flag football for first and second grade students.

Regular football is offered for grades three through six.

Two leagues of soccer are offered in the fall for grades Kindergarten through second, and third grade through sixth.

In the spring, T-ball starts with the 4-year-old league and continues with 5 and 6 year olds.

Coach pitch is offered for girls and boys who are 8 and under.

There are 10 and under, and 12 and under fastpitch softball leagues for girls and 10 and under Peewee, and 12 and under midget baseball leagues for boys.

Wilson said the number of teams can vary, but, on average, for baseball and softball, the center usually fields around 38 teams.

There is also cheerleading for grades three through six and wrestling for ages 5-12.

There is a third and fourth grade basketball league as well as a fifth and sixth grade league.

A basketball camp is offered for all youth in grades first through sixth.

“In wrestling, we’ll have anywhere from 50 to 60 novice wrestlers and probably 25 to 25 open wrestlers,” Wilson said.

The Youth Center also supports a 40-acre sports complex on Howerton Ave. that

features four baseball fields, four softball fields, a regulation soccer field and two concession stands.

“We host numerous tournaments out there,” Wilson said. “And the high school hosts a soccer tournament out there.”

Wilson said no major changes or improvements are planned for 2020, but the floors in the basketball court, racquetball courts and the aerobics room will all be resurfaced.

The Youth Center offers the following yearly memberships, with renewals due on January 1: 12-and under, $5; 13-17 $20; Adult (18-54) $40; Senior (55 and older) $20.

The center also offers a daily fee: Youth (12-and-under), $1; Teens (13-17), $1.50; Adults (18-54) $2; Seniors (55 and older), $1.50.

The Center is open Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the exception of Wednesday, when it closes at 5 p.m. On Saturdays, the center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In addition to Wilson, Youth Center staff include Jared Kennedy, programs director, Ryan Kennedy, complex manager and assistant programs directors, Danny Karlin and Ashley Phillips.

New physicians, new leadership The arrival of a new CEO, chief nursing officer (CNO) and six physicians contributed to a notable year for Hillcrest Cushing as the hospital continued to provide quality care in the midst of a pandemic.

Year in Review Pandemic Response When COVID arrived to the U.S., Hillcrest Cushing worked with other Hillcrest facilities, to ensure employees in all positions were adequately trained and equipped to handle patients who tested positive for COVID-19. Prevention was – and still is – key so the hospital introduced universal masking, visitor restrictions and signage encouraging social distancing.

The hospital also adapted its approach to care and began offering virtual care appointments, e-visits and drive-up appointments.

New Leadership & Physicians CEO Keith Mason joined Hillcrest Cushing in July. He is also CEO of Bailey Medical Center in Owasso.

“Keith brings more than 35 years of health care experience to Cushing,” said Kevin Gross, CEO of Hillcrest HealthCare System. “His leadership at Bailey contributed to the development of a family culture and patient-focused atmosphere, and the hospital was named one of Modern Healthcare’s Best Places to Work for eight straight years.

Now in his seven months at Hillcrest Cushing, I’ve seen employee engagement, patient satisfaction and volumes increase.”

In addition to Mason’s arrival, Julia Johnson joined hospital leadership as CNO in late August. Johnson served as clinical manager of obstetrics at Bailey Medical Center where she worked for 12 years.

Community Outreach

Hillcrest Cushing strives to provide compassionate and quality medical care. Advanced emergency and medical services include cardiology, surgical, ENT, orthopedics, imaging, lung cancer screenings and occupational therapy.

Sleep care is also a service provided at the hospital.

Oklahoma Heart Institute Sleep Care has a full-time staff of physicians and sleep specialists who diagnose and treat sleep disorders in both children and adults.

Charitable endeavors included awarding a scholarship to a high school graduate, which has been a tradition for the past several years.

Patients can connect to their care from virtually anywhere.

The hospital offers MyChart, an online portal for patients to communicate with their doctor, schedule and check-in for appointments, access test results and make payments.

Bringing sun rays of 2021 through storm clouds of 2020 The 2020 pandemic was truly a rollercoaster year for local businesses and nonprofits; however, a dependable constant was always available and ready at the helm: their local Cushing Chamber of Commerce.

The Cushing Chamber of Commerce is the Champion, Connector, and Catalyst for their Member businesses and Nonprofits; and through 2020 and now into 2021, they are proving it consistently, every day.

“During the 2020 year, I stayed as educated as possible to all upcoming Federal and State loans and Grants and Independent grants, on virtual meetings constantly, then I pushed that information out immediately to our Membership several times a week through our Membership E-Blast and through our Social Media pages” said Tracy Caulfield IOM, President and CEO of the Cushing Chamber of Commerce. “We also opened up our doors of knowledge and help to any business or nonprofit; not just our Membership, to make sure every business and nonprofit had help making it through the early March and April 2020 lockdown, then throughout the 2020 summer; we are now again solely focused on our Membership and will continue through 2021. The last thing we wanted to see in 2020 was any business or nonprofit having to close their doors forever due to this pandemic; when the worst of it passed, it was time once again to focus 100% on our Membership. ” The Cushing Chamber kept their speed and tempo of being the Champion for their membership. “We hosted throughout the summer and fall several Shop Local Challenges and promotions on our social media pages to remind the public to support local, and encouraged our Membership to move to online stores and sales in order to really boost their presence and sales to the public. We then transitioned into our Winter Shop Local Campaigns to keep everyone focused on spending their dollars locally. If that were to cease, and if more people shopped online at the big box stores,

our Small Businesses would not have made it through the pandemic.” Tracy Caulfield said. Through several different levels of Advocacy work, the cushing Chamber also fought for small businesses through the Save Small Business Coalition. “The Save Small Business Coalition was a collaborative effort of several U.S. Chambers of Commerce and Associaitions working together with lobbyists and Federal legislators to get more funding for small businesses in the CARES Acts that kept coming through Congress. Basically, we were the mouthpieces for our small businesses and nonprofits across the U.S., letting legislators in D.C. know exactly what was needed in order to keep Small Businesses alive through the pandemic.” Caulfield said. In December, the second round of the CARES Act was passed in congress, and it included all of the needs that the Save Small Business Coalition had asked for on behalf of America’s Small Businesses and Nonprofits. Caulfield said they also moved forward with their BBQ N Blues Oil and Gas Trade Show portions in September, with precautions in place to keep everyone safe. It was a huge success, where many businesses in the Oil and Gas Industry landed new contracts for job projects, helping to keep their businesses going for a bit longer.

Tracy said that with the help of her Executive Assistant Amber Castellon, the Cushing Chamber plans to continue to be a Connector for their Membership. “We are very excited to be able to help our Membership even more, and invest back into their businesses and nonprofits with a Cushing Chamber Foundation Grant Recovery Fund Program in 2021. Through an anonymous Donor, we are able to give 95 of our member businesses and Nonprofits a $1,000 Grant through our Cushing Chamber Foundation for Progress, the Cushing Chamber’s 501©3 Foundation arm. “We cannot thank this donor enough. A thousand dollars can really help a business or nonprofit get a bit ahead on their utilities, inventory, invest in Cushing Chamber

Also on the horizon for 2021 for the Cushing Chamber Membership is a new website where the membership will have their own individual accounts on. “Our Membership will be able to sign up for sponsorships; post job openings; pay invoices; update their directory listings on our website; and much, much more. There’s even an option for very small businesses to make their own “mini” website on this Customer Relations Management Software Program we have purchased through Growthzone, a popular and well-used CRM Software program used by Chambers of Commerce around the World to help manage their Membership.

This program will also help bring more tourism to the Cushing area, by bringing more visitors to the Cushing Chamber’s website. “The more visitors we can attract to Cushing, the more our Economy will grow. It is an important time in our Downtown area, proudly named the Broadway District; and we are a big part of the Broadway District’s development and growth.” Tracy Said. “The Cushing Chamber has been a connector of the Broadway District Business Community, making sure that it is the Downtown Businesses that are in control of the development and growth of their area. We have helped initiate the naming of the District as well as the logo choice to be made by Downtown Businesses.

This is important for buy-in of current and future Small Business owners, developers, and investors that want to move their business to the Broadway District. The Broadway District is going through a huge growth spurt in 2021, along with a streetscape project that will vastly change the aesthetic of the downtown area; we are so excited for the future of the Broadway District.”

Connecting the Broadway District and its Downtown Businesses is only one of the many ways that the Cushing Chamber is connecting one with the other.

The Cushing Chamber is also starting their Young Professionals Group in early 2021, for those business professionals between the ages of 21 and 45. “This has been a highly requested Group from our membership, and we are very excited to get the program off the ground in 2021. We already have a lot planned for the YPG’s in our Membership Community!” Said Caulfield.

The Young Professionals Group is just one of many new Committees, Groups, Programs, and events that are being brought to the Cushing Chamber Membership in 2021. “It is definitely an exciting time to be a Cushing Chamber Member! We are looking forward to many new Member businesses and nonprofits joining us, our Members making new connections, growing their businesses and nonprofits, and getting fully emersed in their Cushing Chamber events, programs, and Festivals. “ “We will continue to be the catalyst on bringing the community our Festival in the Park in September and our BBQ N Blues Festival in June; but our main focus is being a catalyst for our Membership and keeping them above water; basically doing everything we can to keep Cushing’s economy rolling and growing. “ Caulfield said. “If your business or Nonprofit would like more information about becoming a Member of the Cushing Chamber, to become part of this fantastic network of businesses and nonprofits working together for the betterment of Cushing, get a hold of the Cushing Chamber. Ombudsman help improve the quality of life and quality of care available to residents in nursing homes, assisted living and residential care homes.

Ombudsman Volunteers support the quality of life for residents by listening to their concerns and working with the facility to meet their needs.

Ombudsman Volunteers help residents and families work with nursing home staff for changes to improve nursing home life and help them communicate better with each other.

Must be 18 years or older and have reliable transportation, be able to visit an assigned facility 2 hours a week, and attend a monthly continuing education meeting.
