A
room full of friends extending warm wishes, tables sparkling with sil-
ver and crystal and an exquisite wedding cake – this is the wedding re-
ception, and the cake is the centerpiece of this festive occasion.
A wedding cake is the happy symbol of the married state, and no cake in the
bride’s life will ever mean so much to her. The origins of the wedding cake are lost
in antiquity, but some speculate that tiers of cookies or pastries may have evolved
into a single, tiered cake.
Fruitcake has for centuries formed the base of the traditional English wedding
cake. Layered with jam, laced with rum and topped with marzipan and royal icing,
this tasty but heavy confection was brought to this continent with the first English
settlers.
In time, lighter cakes became more popular for American weddings, but abun-
dance remained as a symbol of prospective happiness and prosperty. One Boston
cookbook from 1853 published a recipe for a wedding cake which requires 90 eggs,
plus the white of 19 eggs for frosting. Contemporary cakes are lighter and less sweet than their historic counterparts and have become increasingly elegant and individ-
ualized.

The average wedding cake consists of three tiers and feeds approximately 150 people. Wedding cake portions are traditionally small because the cake is usually served after a formal dinner. Cindy Bird of Love Bird Cakes in Victoria has been making wedding cakes for 35 years and has seen trends come and go. “There are trends that come along. Some are very short term and others seem to last,” said Bird. “Semi-Naked cakes have been on the market for several years now and they are still a popular option for some brides.” Bird explained that semi-naked cakes usually have buttercream icing but the cake is not fully iced. The icing is applied but then the marjority of the icing is scraped off and the cake is called ‘semi-naked.’ “Thats been a very popular trend that has been around for at least three years,” she said. Buttercream is still the most popular frosting, but other choices are available. “A lot of brides want to add metallics to their cakes, so I hand brush rose gold or gold so that is very strong trend right now.”

The most unusal cakes are usually the groom’s cakes. “From alligators to welding machines to armadillos holding a beer, the grooms get to have all the fun and the brides get to have all the beauty,” she said. Bird stated that typically, couples set up an appointment with her about their cakes. Bird reviews the wedding date and the venue to determine delivery time. “They often come in with photos of cakes they have seen online. We figure out if they are doing both bride’s and groom’s cakes and I send cake home with them. Many places will give just a few samples, but I make over 35 flavors of cakes and I send the couple home with about five to 10 different four-inch mini cakes,” added Bird. Whether following in grand tradition or designed in a fashion that is comtempory and unique, a bride’s cake is a symbol of her wedding. In providing a gorgeous cake for her guests, she invites them to share in her happiness and the pleasure of the cake will remain forever in photographs and cherished memories. v

Choosing the site of your wedding reception
It’s time to choose a reception location. Are you thinking hotel, country inn or cruise boat? Orchard, art gallery or golf club? There are so many great places to celebrate your wedding that sometimes it can be difficult to choose. Consequently, it’s always a good idea to establish a list of criteria before starting your search. Here are a few things to consider.
1. THE WEDDING THEME The location must be suitable for the theme without requiring a huge makeover; otherwise your budget could explode. Ask about decorating options.
2. THE CAPACITY Make sure the chosen place can comfortably accommodate your guests.
3. THE MEAL Is there a caterer on site? Can you choose a 20
different one? Can you customize the menu? Is there a liquor license? Can you bring your own wine or if it’s a vineyard, are you limited to certain products?
4. ACCESS & OVERNIGHT ACCOMMODATIONS Is there enough parking? Is it free? Is the reception hall close to where the ceremony will take place? Are hotels nearby?
5. EQUIPMENT Are the dishes, chairs and tablecloths provided or do you need to rent them? Is sound and lighting equipment provided? You’ll need to take into consideration everything that is not included in the rental price in order to calculate your budget. Also, be sure to reserve as soon as you’ve made your choice, as your date may not be available for long.

HONEYMOON SAFETY
Although honeymooners may not want to think about crime and theft during such a blissful occasion, newlyweds need to be aware that there can be trouble even in Paradise. Don’t throw caution to the wind – unfortunately, crime never takes a holiday. Instead, follow these down-to-earth suggestions for travel safety and enjoy the best of romantic vacations.
• Never leave money or valuables scattered around the hotel room. Store airline tickets, jewlery, passports, etc. in the hotel or room safe. • If there’s a lock on the ouside door, there is for a reason. Make sure to use it.
• Ask about the hours of the hotel’s front desk. Is it staffed 24 hours a day? If not, is someone available to handle after-hours emergencies?
• Are the hotel grounds lighted at night? How does one get around the property – is there a shuttle service?
• Turn on a light before leaving for dinner so you’ll return to a well-lighted room. Also, always have key in hand when returning to your room.

Sharing your big day
In a world of sharing news and life events on popular social media sites, it is easy for couples to forget to announce their engagements and weddings in the newspaper. By including engagement and wedding announcements in the Jackson County Herald-Tribune, couples can share their news and preserve a bit of their history. The Herald-Tribune will run wedding and engagement announcements and photographs as well as follow-ups on wedding parties and showers. To help couples share their news in the paper, the Jackson County Herald-Tribune has several options available for submitting information. The charge to run an engagement announcement along with a photo in the newspaper is $40. A wedding write-up after the ceremony that includes a bridal photo is $50. Couples should submit engagement an-

nouncements as soon as three months before the ceremony and wedding information no later than one month after the ceremony. Submission deadline is Friday at 5 p.m. Black and white or color photographs can be used, if the picture is good quality. Photographs may be submitted in a variety of formats including a CD or flash drive. Also, emailed photographs will be accepted, provided they are submitted in a jpg format at a minimum of 250 dpi resolution. Couples are discouraged from submitting photographs that are reproduced on a home printer or copy machine. In an effort to aid couples in submitting information, forms are available at the newspaper office at 306 N. Wells St. in Edna.
