hings are going well at your Chamber of Commerce and we were very pleased to resume our monthly Chamber luncheons on November 10, 2020. While planning was a bit different for this luncheon, we had a fabulous turn-out of our membership to hear from special guest speaker Kelly Craft, United States Ambassador to the United Nations. We were honored to host Ambassador Craft and I would like to personally thank all of you that registered and came out to hear from the Ambassador. I would like to take a moment and thank my assistant, Stephanie Hussey. While not always a visible presence, Stephanie is constantly and consistently working behind the scenes, not only for me, but for the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and the Corbin Economic Development Agency. Her commitment to this office has been unwavering for over 5 years now and she has been an indispensable ally in our work to make the Southern Kentucky region a better place to live and do business. MPI OF CORBIN CELEBRATING THEIR 40TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2020

PI Custom Steel Doors and Frames began its 40-year journey in 1980 as a family-owned business with only five employees. At that time, their base of operation was a small facility near downtown. A year later, the steel frame manufacturer moved to its current location off North Hills Road on the north side of town. In 1983, MPI increased its product line to include custom hollow metal doors. The venture was so successful that a separate manufacturing facility was added in 1986. Business growth continued through the years, and the business now occupies three manufacturing facilities and has expanded its market reach into 43 states, as well as multiple locations in other countries. “We have never been as strong and poised for growth as we are right now,” said Scott Willson, who has served as MPI’s CEO since 2017. Willson, and Chief Operations Officer, Holland Crouch, began implementing their shared vision for the future of MPI in the

summer of ’17. Since that time, much has happened. “In 2017, one of our goals was to increase our customer base,” Willson explained. “Since then, we have added about 110 new accounts. We’ve always been known as a strong regional player historically, but our outreach into more areas of the US, and international locations, has truly expanded the MPI brand.” So, what exactly does MPI manufacture? MPI is a custom hollow metal manufacturer. This basically means they bring architectural visions for complex steel frame and door design to life for the end customer. U.N. Ambassador Kelly Craft addresses chamber luncheon

elly Craft has taken her Kentucky raising to one of the biggest stages in the world, serving as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations. The Glasgow native was in Corbin recently, as part of a trip through Southeastern Kentucky, taking the opportunity to speak to the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce during its monthly luncheon. “What a testament to what Kentucky has and what Kentuckians can do,” said Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers, R-Manchester, who introduced Craft. Craft said her Kentucky roots play a big part in keeping her grounded and her moral compass pointing north as

she works to represent U.S. interests while dealing with the 192 other U.N. members. “There is no better title in this world than being Kelly Craft from Kentucky,” Craft said. Growing up as the daughter of a veterinarian in Barren County, Craft said her father taught her how to give and how to listen. “He told me, ‘No matter where you go, bring the people behind you because they too will be you one day, and you want that to happen,’” Craft said. Craft said she has tried to put that into practice at the U.N., noting she has made a point to meet, not just with the other four permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, Great Britain, France, China and Russia, but with the other U.N. countries. “I really felt that need during COVID,” Craft said noting that 75 percent of the countries told her they had never spoken to the U.S. ambassador. Craft recalled her conversation with the ambassador from Fiji. The island nation in the south Pacific has an economy that is heavily dependent on tourism. With the COVID– 19 pandemic, tourism has come to a halt. It has affected everything from schools to health care. “Everything has just been completely washed out there,” Craft said of Fiji’s economy. When she spoke to the ambassador, Craft initially asked how U.S. aid to the country was being spent. The ambassador explained that because of the loss of tourism dollars, the schools in Fiji were in danger of closing, and asked for an additional $9 million. “I hung up and called the administration,” Craft said. “That enabled them to keep their schools open.”

ometown Bank is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2020. Original plans for this milestone included a series of celebrations, including customer appreciation days and special promotions. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, those plans were unfortunately derailed. Still, despite the disappointing setbacks, Hometown is finishing up the year on a high note. Thanks to its loyal customer base in the tri-county area, the bank has enjoyed steady growth, and it is now celebrating the recent opening of a brand new, fully operational permanent branch location in Williamsburg. “The amazing thing has been our growth,” said President Tim Barnes when asked about how he and his team have navigated the difficult waters of 2020. “We have grown $37 million this year,” said Barnes, explaining that much of that growth

came thanks to the fact that Hometown managed to add several new customers due to their willingness to offer Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans in the wake of coronavirus-related shutdowns earlier this year. As for the new branch in Williamsburg, Barnes said, “Our goal was to open this branch in the summer, and then open a new branch in London about this time. Everything got pushed back, though. Finding supplies has been harder, and getting pricing on materials has been harder, but we are really excited with how it has turned out.” Barnes said that the pandemic has probably forever changed some of the ways that banking is done, but he and the team at Hometown understand that personal service is still very important to many customers. For this reason, the bank will continue to offer a mix of online and mobile services, while also keeping the

In fact, Hyde and his staff have taken extra care during this year’s COVID-19 pandemic in order to ensure customer safety. “We have followed all of the recommended CDC guidelines and state mandates,” he said. “This includes providing our people with PPE, and making plenty of hand sani-
