Happy Thanksgiving, Wavers.

Thanksgiving has always meant so much to me. Some of my earliest and happiest memories in life are of my mom, dad, sister, and I loading up our family car to make the trek to Wichita, Kansas to spend Thanksgiving with my grandparents. Such a happy occasion and something I looked forward to all year long.

There is no doubt that 2020 has been a difficult year for many people. I think now, more than ever, is a time to stay especially close to our family and friends.

To truly celebrate each other on a regular basis. It’s also a wonderful time to make new friends.

As busy and hectic as our lives have become, let’s please never forget the people that are less fortunate than us.

There is so much we can do to help our fellow citizens in need. Become active in our community. There are so many terrific organizations here on our beautiful island that strive daily to make things better for people in need. Get to know them. Get involved! Together we can make life so much better for the people that can sure use a helping hand.

n a hot day in late May a tiny six weeks old dolphin was found stranded on the beach in Southeast Texas. With no mother in sight tourists called Galveston’s own Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network to the rescue. By the time they arrived the little guy had been laying in the sun, unprotected for hours. Overheated and severely sunburned the team provided first aid and transported him to the rehab center here in Galveston. The facility is equipped with a well designed, climate controlled rehabilitation pool that allows dolphins to swim freely but also provides proper water ac-

cess for the personnel that must feed and medicate the animals in their care. They take care of any marine mammal rescued from the upper Texas coast and parts of Louisiana.

There are only a handful of cases reported of successful rearing of dolphins this young to adulthood.

Despite best efforts most die within a few days after rescue. Our baby soon to be named Trooper was placed in the pool and immediately showed strength and determination.

He was mentally alert and swam without assistance. We decided he deserved a chance. We put togeth-

er a treatment and feeding plan so the team could go to work. Trooper would not accept a bottle so he had to be fed by a tube every 2 hours round the clock. He was given a specially designed milk replacer, fluids, antibiotics and various other medications over the next 2 months. His blood was tested several times per month to check for signs of illness.

A large section of his burned skin on his back died. The surface of one eye was also damaged while lying in the sun on the beach. Our treatments fortunately were successful. Trooper bears some scars but has made an

amazing recovery. By July we knew he was going to make it.

A sad reality is that dolphins stranded at such an early age can never learn the hunting and survival skills necessary to make it in the wild. If released and without a family pod he would likely starve or be killed by sharks.

Trooper was deemed non releasable.

Good news came in August. The Indianapolis Zoo would adopt Trooper and he would join their large group of bottlenose dolphins in their huge exhibit. He would have a family group to live with, other youngsters to play with. He will get expert care for the rest of his life.

Trooper departed Galveston in September in a specially designed transport box designed by Sea World

San Antonio. A private jet transport was provided free of charge by FedEx from Houston to Indianapolis. After a short flight he had a police escort to the zoo and is now enjoying life with the other dolphins.

Trooper would never have had a chance at survival without the heroic efforts of the staff and volunteers of the Stranding Network. Hundreds of hours of care and monitoring are required to save each animal cared for in their facility. Heidi Whitehead, the network’s director, has used her years of experience helping marine mammals to create a truly inspiring organization. Galveston is so lucky to have this wonderful facility and amazing person in our city.

c ommon problem for many women as they age is the dreaded ‘turkey neck’, or loose, sagging skin under the chin and jawline. ‘Turkey neck’ can be caused by a number of factors including aging and weight change, while genetics also plays a big role. Until recently, the most common treatment for the sagging skin was a surgical lift or other painful procedures to remove or tighten the skin. Fortunately, advances in medicine and technology have brought us an exciting, non-invasive treatment for this condition, eMatrix Radio Frequency, which can be done in the office with minimal pain and downtime. eMatrix delivers radio frequency energy precisely into the skin via a small grid. 4. True or False: In 1925 Galveston passed a city ordinance prohibiting bi-racial sex. Okay you fun fact finders, this one’s true! That’s right. In 1925, the ordinance was specifically directed toward black and white people having sex. Other racial groups were somehow overlooked.

5. True or False: Movie star Jimmy Stewart invested in Galveston’s first TV station. Sounds crazy, but this one is true! The TV station was KGUL, a CBS affiliate. Jimmy Stewart came to the island to host the station’s grand opening on March 22, 1953. He was a major investor.

6. True or False: The original name of the Balinese Room was Sui Jen. This one’s true. Sui Jen was remodeled adding a 400’ walkway over the Gulf with a T-head on the back. The name was then changed to the Balinese Room.

ob Rohan, or as he is known in Texas “Bad Bob”, has been playing the fiddle and singing in various groups for over 30 years in Texas, and has opened for Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Charlie Daniels, Carlene Carter and John Conley to name a few. Bob has played in bands that have backed up country legends like Hank Thompson, Ray Price, Jack Greene, Pam Tillis, and Dale Watson.

Along with songwriting, Bob is also a talented cartoonist and has a self syndicated comic strip titled “Buffalo Gals”. The comic feature is about two cowgirls “Bess Winchester” and

“Connie Cheyenne”. The comic strip was inspired after playing with “The Hays County Gals and Pals” a cowgirl western group that toured through Texas, Oklahoma and as far west as Elko, Nevada. 2O, dihydrogen oxide, agua, Adam’s ale…all words for the most essential liquid to every living thing on earth – water. Water exists in all cells or organisms that possess a clearly defined nucleus, ranging from yeast to humans.

We can survive up to several weeks without food, but only a few days without water.

From cells and tissues to vital organs, every system in the body requires water to function.

Drink more water. We hear this all the time.

We all know it is important, and we all know we should be doing it. But do we know why?

Well, for starters, water makes up 60% of our total body weight and a startling 90% of brain weight….news to me. I always figured 90% of my brain was air! Adequate hydration is essential for your body to function at all, let alone optimally.

Drinking water does more than quench your thirst — it’s essential to keeping your body functioning properly and feeling healthy.

Nearly all of your body’s major systems depend on water to function and survive. You’d be surprised what staying hydrated can do for your body.

Here Are Just A Few Important Ways Water Works In Your Body: • Regulates body temperature • Moistens tissues in the eyes, nose, and mouth • Protects body organs and tissues • Carries nutrients and oxygen to cells • Lubricates joints • Lessens burden the on kidneys and liver by flushing out waste products • Helps dissolve minerals and nutrients to make them accessible to your body • Keeps your brain functioning at its best

Every day, you lose water through your movebreath, perspiration, urine, and bowel move ments, which is why it’s crucial to continue to take in water throughout the day. Interesting Interestingly, you can lose water when you least expect apit. For example, an air traveler can lose ap proximately 6 cups of water during a threehour flight. As the body can’t store water, we need fresh supplies every day to make up for losses. The amount we need depends on our body size, metabolism, the weather, the food we eat, and our activity levels.

The Mayo Clinic recommends a minimum daily intake of water for women to be 11.5 cups, men 15.5 cups. But how to get enough fluids in your day is a good question. Fresh water is the best drink because it does not contain calories and is best for hydrating the body. Water from the tap is generally safe and usually available wherever you go. Tea can also be a source of fluid. Tea can help you meet your daily fluid recommendations and is a source of antioxidants and polyphenols, which appear to protect against heart disease and cancer. But this refers to tea in its simplest form, not good ole Texas sweet tea!

If you prefer to get some of your fluids from fruit, aim to eat whole pieces of fresh fruit instead of having fruit juice – you’ll still get the delicious fruity juice (liquids), but you’ll also benefit from the bonus fiber and nutrients while avoiding the extra sugar found in fruit juice.

Tips For Drinking More Water • Add a squeeze or slice of lemon or lime or some strawberries or mint leaves to plain water to add variety.

• Keep a bottle or glass of water handy on your desk, in your car, or in your bag.

• Drink some water with each meal and snack.

Be careful about reaching for a commercially bottled water, especially flavored ones. Read the label to be sure you are getting pure

water and not water with salt, leading to fluid retention and swelling, and even increased blood pressure in susceptible people. Also, be sure if you are drinking flavored, bottled water that it does not contain sugars, real or artificial. Honestly, it really is best to stick to just plain water, no fancy additives.

Not drinking enough water can lead to dehydration, especially for us in our hot, humid weather. Dehydration occurs when the body’s water content is too low, but this is easily fixed by increasing your fluid intake.

For us all, water means good health. But this is only logical as much of our body is water.

If there is a lack of water in our body, we are not functioning. Symptoms of dehydration include thirst, headaches, lethargy, mood changes and slow responses, dry nasal passages, dry or cracked lips, dark-colored urine, weakness, tiredness, confusion, and hallucinations. If dehydration is not corrected by fluid intake, eventually urination stops, the kidneys fail, and the body can’t remove toxic waste products. In extreme cases, dehydration may result in death.

One crucial benefit of adequate hydration is to optimize brain performance. Lacking water can cause some ugly effects from headaches to anxiety and fatigue. Since our brains depend so much upon adequate hydration to function, even just one percent below optimal hydration can affect our mood, making it difficult to concentrate and having a headache.

In the past, I often suffered from middle of the night headaches. It was my smart, handsome veterinarian, who also happens to be my husband, that pointed out I might not be drinking enough water. And yep, as soon as I made an effort to drink more water, the nighttime headaches disappeared!

With so many benefits of drinking water and so many consequences of not drinking enough water, make it a several-times-daily ritual to go to your fridge or faucet, fill up a mug with the cool, clear lifesaver, raise your glass, and toast to your good health and hydration.

I work only in watercolor and have been painting for six years now. t was love at first sight when my husband brought me to Galveston when he was being transferred from Michigan to Texas. The architecture, the beach, the thriving downtown, and the seafood restaurants were all near to my heart. We could not settle in Galveston because it was too far from work.

We did buy a weekend getaway condo in the downtown area and have gone there almost every weekend for the last twelve years to enjoy Galveston and events like Mardi Gras and Art Walk.

During these crazy pandemic times, painting has been my salvation. I do my paintings from photos I have taken including scenes from Tuscany, Venice, London, New Orleans, San Antonio, Galveston, and even in the neighborhood.

I became obsessed with the Galveston cemetery on Broadway after seeing the yellow flowers blanketing it in the spring. The monuments, history, and architecture are stunning. I’ve done several paintings of the cemetery and one was selected for the McGivney award in 2016.

I always try to tell a story with my paintings and share the beauty I see in this world with everyone.

Our condo has brick walls that cried to have paintings on them. That lead us to the Galveston Art League where we purchased several paintings by local artists 48 | Waves Magazine | November 2020 Issue

Painting dogs, especially my own, is a new area that I am exploring. I have received several commissions.

I try to capture the personality of the dog and have enjoyed the results.

I was fortunate enough to see ETC’s production of the original Trailer Park Musical a few years back and, if this ‘companion piece’ is even half as funny as that one, you won’t want to miss it! I was in tears and all but rolling in the aisles with laughter!

A bit of local pride ensued when I read the following article in Texas Highways magazine that named as THE GRAND 1894 OPERA HOUSE as one of five Historic Texas Theatres: There’s a long-standing tradition in theater called the “ghost light.” This is when a single light bulb or other light source is placed on a stage and kept lit while the venue is closed, or “dark” in theatrical parlance.

Depending on who you ask, the ghost light is meant to keep the spirits of past shows happy or to chase them away. Unfortunately, ghost

lights in historic theaters across Texas are staying on a lot longer than usual due to the spread of COVID-19.

Since mid-March, theaters have been unable to book their usual slate of shows and special events resulting in lost ticket sales and lost revenue. Many theaters were expecting to reopen in June, and even put all of the necessary precautions in place to keep staff and guests safe. Then COVID-19 cases began to spike again in Texas, and reopening wasn’t feasible. Some theaters have postponed their reopenings until August, while others have canceled their seasons entirely.

Without revenue, covering operating costs like electricity and staff salaries has been a big challenge. Monthly expenses can range from $500 for a small, 250-seat theater to $500,000 for a 1,200-seat theater. Some theaters have found relief through a Paycheck Protection Program loan, but many are having to wait out the situation with few options.

One such theater is the Anson Opera House, which closed its doors on March 20. Built in 1907, it’s owned by the city of Anson (part of the Abilene metropolitan area) and had recently remodeled its event hall. “We got it all fixed up but couldn’t use it,” says board member Cheryl Guernsey. The opera house reopened for a small wedding on June 20 and has booked two more weddings in August.

“Revenue has been from our rentals. That’s basically what we’ve had, but that’s dwindled,” she says. “We’re at a standstill.”

Although theaters can operate at 25% capacity, some historic venues that have older patrons have chosen to remain closed and launch creative money-makers instead.

Abilene’s 90-year-old Paramount Theatre, which showed its last movie on March 14, devised a drive-by popcorn fundraiser. Patrons could drive up to the theater, purchase an extra-long bag of popcorn for $10, then go home and watch a movie. The first fundraiser in April was so successful, the theater held a popcorn drive-by every Friday between May

15 and June 10. “We probably sold between 1,000 to 1,500 bags,” says events manager Verity Pryor-Harden. Like other theaters, the Paramount rents out its main marquee. For $100, the theater will put up everything from a business’s name to a marriage proposal.

In Flatonia, the intimate 84-seat Lyric Theater is the only theater operating in Fayette County.

Although it never officially closed during the pandemic, it stopped showing movies every Friday and Saturday. To help pay for operating costs, groups of 10 and fewer can rent the theater and watch a movie for around $200. Just don’t request a screening of Beach Blanket Bingo. “That’s the last film the theater showed before it closed in 1967,” says owner James Longmire, who restored the Lyric and reopened it in 2017.

For The Grand 1894 Opera House in Galveston, this year has been particularly hard. The venue was halfway through its 125th anniversary season when it had to shutter. “I had titled it ‘A Legendary Season,’ not realizing what the year would become,” says executive director Maureen Patton. Fortunately, the theater received a PPP loan and has been able to drum up sales for its commemorative history book. Written by former board president Merri Scheibe Edwards, the 152-page, picture-filled hard-bound book sells for $60.

With social distancing regulations, The Grand can seat about 200 people. To accommodate the smaller audiences, Patton hopes to present a couple one-man shows featuring pianist Rob Landes and Jaston Williams of Greater Tuna fame in early 2021. But she’s keeping a cautious outlook. “Every day is a new day.

We literally don’t know what the situation will be with social distancing. That’s the $64,000 question,” she says.

While stages remain empty, some theaters have turned to community engagement. “As a nonprofit, what you have to do during this period of time is focus on both revenue and relevance,” says Jim Ritts, CEO of the Paramount and State theaters in Austin. “I think that’s very, very important for any venue, but particularly important for historic venues that have been generationally important to a city.”

As one of the main venues for South by Southwest, the Paramount lost 10 days of programming when the festival canceled with just seven days’ notice in March. In a typical year, the theater has between 280 and 300 live shows and 300 to 350 film screenings. To date, they’ve had to postpone, cancel, or reschedule

208 shows and films. “That’s about $3.2 million in gross revenue that has been delayed or not coming back,” Ritts says.

And until that day comes, she’ll keep her theater’s ghost light lit.

Because the theater’s big annual gala and Summer Classic Film Series have been postponed twice, the Paramount has created virtual events to raise money and stay connected with patrons. These events have included an online auction, with items ranging from a message on the marquee to a special concert with Guy Forsyth; interviews featuring author Lawrence Wright and autism spokesperson Temple Grandin; and the Quaranscreen Film Series, with film programmer Stephen Jannise offering weekly movie recommendations that people can watch at home.

Some of our other local venues have things in the works including THE PURPLE BOX THEATRE who I recently held auditions for CHRISTMAS 9-1-1 described on their auditions page thusly: It’s Christmas Eve in the precinct and Santa has been arrested along with all the usual perps, drug addicts, hookers, pickpockets and pimps! Along with the ongoing chaos, Det Sgt Angie Franklin is looking for the sold-out power ranger she promised her son, Detective Dave Porter is hoping to get a return phone call from his daughter who wants nothing to do with him, Detective Bob Walker is just trying to make his newlywed wife happy who insist on decoration the station to look like Rockefeller Center, and Officer Tracy Ballentine is just wanting the old fashion Christmas filled with love and family. Can Santa help?

But how when he is sitting there in handcuffs!

A wonderful story of love and redemption.

Although the future is uncertain for all venues, Ritts and others point out that historic theaters have the advantage of experience over their newer counterparts. Theaters built from the late 1800s to the 1930s have survived challenging times. Austin’s 104-yearold Paramount, for instance, remained open through the Spanish flu of 1918, World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II. The 125-year-old Grand 1894 Opera House withstood all those events and the devastating hurricanes of 1900 and 2008. Historic downtown theaters have also persevered during the suburbanization of cities in the 1950s and ’60s and the economic hardships for downtowns in the ’70s and ’80s.

Making it through events like these leave downtown historic theaters “battle tested,” Ritts says. “That’s the one thing that we all have in common. You have this bond of having been through the wars, and while this is a unique time—we went from going 150 to zero in one day—the fact of the matter is that our DNA is survival.”

It’s because of this perseverance that generation after generation of locals are attached to their historic theaters. After all, these are the places where people saw their first musical or movie. “We hear stories all the time of people going on their first dates at our theater,” Pryor-Harden says. And with their old architecture and flashy marquees, historic theaters are often a main attraction for road-tripping tourists. “When you google Flatonia, seven out of 10 pictures that come up are the Lyric Theater,” Longmire says.

i there, Wavers. Your Bum would like to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving. It’s been a pretty rough year for a lot of folks, so your Bum is going to spread a little holiday feel-good cheer.

There have been plenty of horror stories published about certain celebrities being some of the worst people around. Celebrities with huge egos that are very rude and condescending to their fans and the public. Their overall treatment towards people is just plain awful.

Your Bum had a thought the other day while riding around in my ol’ scarab. It’s not like me to have many thoughts in a day, but here is what had me thinking...

We read or see an account almost daily about how rude certain celebrities are. That got me to thinking, who are the really nice celebrities? Celebrities that are kind and good-natured. Celebrities that are good people. Your Bum has put together a list of first-person accounts from people who have had pleasant experiences while engaging with very famous celebrities. These stories are pretty heartwarming.

So enough of the bad celebrities, here is a list of some of the really nice ones. Your Bum has even thrown in a few celebrities that are no longer with us but brought joy to others while they were here on earth.

Tom Hanks I met Tom Hanks while I was shopping at Best Buy. He was in line in front of me with a cart full, all by himself. I was only buying a bottle of water because they didn’t have what I was looking for. I just blurted out “Forrest Gump is my favorite movie” like a creep. He turned around and said “that was my favorite movie to make! I’m glad you love it.”

He then chatted with me for a while about movies as we stood in line. When it was his turn to check out, while they were ringing up his stuff, he said, “let me get that water for you” and paid for my water. He kept talking to me and then we walked out and he said, “nice talking to you! You’re a very nice young lady and always remember...life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are gonna get” in his best Forrest Gump voice. It was the best thing ever.

Robin Williams Here are two accounts from people who had the good fortune to meet one of your Bums all-time favorite performers...

One: I was jogging at the San Francisco Marina in 1988 when I saw Robin Williams sitting in the side of his van just chillin’. I said, “How you doin’ Mr. Williams?” He said, I’m doing great, you running from the cops?” I laughed and stopped to chat with him for about 5 minutes. He was absolutely delightful.

Two: “I saw Robin Williams at an ice cream shop while I was on vacation. I got my ice cream and went outside to eat. Then, Robin Williams came out with his ice cream and actually sat down at my table. We talked for a solid 45 minutes. Best day of my life.”

Bill Murray Bill Murray and his son came into an Inuit art gallery. The owner and I were the only ones there. Then, a UPS delivery person came in and freaked out about seeing Bill Murray on her birthday. Murray had his son pick up her feet and he picked her up under her shoulders and they started rocking her back and forth. While doing this, Murray crooned “happy birthday to yooooou...” After that, we all chatted with him for a bit. What a super nice guy.

Renee Zellweger “ I served her once at the restaurant where I worked. I was honestly having a really bad day. She had 3 kids in tow, dressed in yoga pants and t-shirts. Nothing about her screamed celebrity and I was focused on other stuff.”

I messed up twice on her order and she honestly couldn’t have been nicer about it. “Oh. no problem. just bring it when you can, etc. etc.” She went out of her way to make small talk. I only found out who she was when I went to run her credit card and it said R.K. Zellweger. The kids all thanked me after their meal and she gave me a big hug on the way out. She also left an amazing tip for my subpar service. “ It was a total dream.”

Jim Carrey “ Jim Carrey gave me a ride to the gas station after my car ran out of gas in Bel Aire. I told him I was a huge fan of Ace Ventura and I could mimic his laugh from the movie. It wasn’t long before we both had our heads out the window cackling away. He bought my gas and drove me back to my car. One of the greatest moments of my life.”

Sandra Bullock I was working at a retail store in the Pittsburgh airport alone one morning. It was a slow day and I had no customers for almost an hour, then Sandra Bullock walked in. I sold her a portable charger for her phone and we chatted about Pittsburgh for quite a while.

What a down to earth person she is. Really nice lady.

Jay Leno When I was 17, I got to go backstage at the Tonight Show because I was a huge fan of the show. After the show, Jay came back to the green room and talked to me and my family for a solid ten minutes. After we had left the studio, we saw him leaving the parking lot and signing autographs for his fans. The real kicker: the next year I graduated high school. Out of nowhere, Jay sent me a letter congratulating me on my graduation. He couldn’t have been nicer to me.

Muhammad Ali I was in the airport lounge for American in New York waiting for the early flight to Chicago. Ali came in with his entourage and sat in the seats across from me. I pretended to read my newspaper (this was early 1990’s) but was watching him the entire time. When one of his “people” went to the coffee service I went up to him and asked if I could say hello to Mr. Ali. The guy said “Sure! He loves it when people come up and talk to him.” I went over to Ali to introduce myself, we shook hands, and he invited me to sit down next to him. We sipped coffee and chatted for about 25 minutes until I had to leave for my flight. He can’t sign autographs because of his Parkinson’s, but he was the nicest, kindest man. I will never forget it.

Dave Chappelle My friends and I ran into Dave Chappelle at a hotel. He was extremely friendly to us and all of his fans that were around that evening. He actually invited all of us to come and hang out with him at a hookah bar where we chilled, smoked, and swapped stories for four hours. To top it off, he picked up the entire tab for all of us. How does something like this ever happen? What a terrific guy.

Bryan Cranston I met Bryan Cranston once at the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas while I was on vacation. I was a bit fan-boyish and blurted out...”omg, it’s Heisenberg!”

Almost immediately his facial expression went angry and he walked up to me and muttered “How dare you call me out like that... if people knew who I was, I wouldn’t be in this business... next time you call me out like that be ready for a barrel.”

Then he smiled and started laughing and we ended up talking for about 10 minutes about Breaking Bad. He gave me an autograph and I was so happy to have had this experience. What a cool guy.

hat’s slower than a speeding smoker kingfish and yet fast enough to trick it into striking? It’s a Kingfish Surprise! The reliable, 4-6 oz. chrome Diamond jig by Bead, when mated with a highspeed reel for its motivation, will get the job done.

While Diamond jigs are effective on most occasions, kingfish at times strike a bit short. This missing of a Diamond jig could be because of its wobbling motion, a too slow retrieve speed, or simply because the kingfish recognizes it as a fake. The stealth green stinger wire and hook will be the “surprise” that a kingfish doesn’t see and therefore can’t expect. The green swivel and leader wire complete the stealth package. What hiding everything but the chrome Diamond jig body does is to make only the jig’s body the speedy kingfish’s target. With this stealth treatment, a short striker will be converted into a hookup by the stinger.

Since kingfish, many times, strike Diamond jigs from the side and slightly from the rear, chances are that they will hit the rear half

of the jig. The bite on the jig’s tapered body will let it, and the stinger’s wire, slide through the kingfish’s jaws, with the hook to follow in an instant.

Recommended for the 6-8” leader wire is #7, 80#, Malin with a size 4, 130# Spro Power Swivel. The stinger wire is heavier for greater kink/curl resistance. Use #12, 180# Malin for the stinger’s 3” hard wire link to the stinger hook. A haywire twist is used at all connecting points. Treble hooks for the stinger that work for me include the 2/0, Mustad 3561 ED, 3X strong or a 2/0, Owner 5666, 4X strong. Give the illustration a look for a clear view of the total arrangement.

The stealth green which almost disappears in “king green” water is Rust-O-Leum, John Deere 7435.

A topcoat of Rust-O-Leum, Clear Matte 7902, reduces the reflection of sunlight off the green color coat.

Kingfish also strike at a “flash”; reflection reduction is important.

Apply these spray paints to both the swivel/leader and the stinger wire/ treble hook...color them gone; leave the “flashing” up to the jig’s body.

High speed retrieves get bit most often by kingfish-they don’t get as good a look at the fleeing ‘ ‘baitfish”, your Diamond jig. The Shimano TSM IV Speedmaster and it’s

6.0:1 retrieve ratio fills the bill. Its 44 inches of line retrieved per turn of the handle with a full spool, gives you speed to burn. The Speedmaster’s capacity of 330 yards of 30# mono is adequate, but I prefer about 120 yards of 40# mono under 300 yards of 100# Power Pro Spectra. The Spectra is the size of 20# mono and has almost zero stretch, which aids in the hookset. It’s a bit pricey at about $38 for 300 yards but its many advantages, including lasting almost forever, make it worth the price to me.

Hi-Vis yellow or white is my color preference; with it, you, and everyone else can monitor your line’s location in the water. My Spectra has about 15 feet of 60#, clear Izorline mono leader; they are connected with a “Tony Pena” knot that was fully described in the last issue. It’s also the knot used to mate the mono backing to the Spectra. You can delete the type of mono leader that I use by tying a 10-turn surgeon’s loop into the Spectra, use a 10-turn offshore swivel knot to attach your swivel, then twist on your wire leader.

The first 15 to 20 feet of the bright Spectra can be easily made difficult to see by any predator chasing your jig - take a green Marks-A-Lot permanent marker, carefully split the tip lengthwise, then run the Spectra through it. Now, it’s as stealthy

on for the strike. At times, you may have to increase the sink depth to 20 feet or more to generate a kingfish strike. Watch your leader and stinger wire closely for any kinking - one good strike/hookup and you could be there.

If anything is in question, tie on another one. Pre-rig at least four of these Diamond jigs with a stinger for each trip. Cutoffs and damaged wire can be expected.

When casting a Diamond jig and stinger, just before it hits the water, thumb the spool a bit more, slowing everything down. This straightens out the jig and stinger hook away from you, virtually eliminating fouling when it enters the water. Let it sink 2 to 3 feet, then burn it back to the boat with your rod tip pointed away from you; use all of the speed you can get out of that TSM IV and hang

The last fishing comment: With this stinger arrangement, there is the chance that at the strike, the kingfish will have the jig body only in its mouth. For a more assured hookup, keep winding at the strike until your drag slips, then load the rod. If the kingfish starts to open its mouth to drop the jig, the tight line will snap the hook into penetration - most of the time.

To many of us, this rig’s name would sound like an appetizing seafood dish, which I’m guessing is exactly what it’s supposed to mimic for our target. The Kingfish Surprise is indeed a short-striking kingfish’s worst nightmare. Twist and paint some up, the short strikers are out there now, looking for their surprise package.

- 2 lbs. ground prime bris-

ket pressed into 1/3 lb. patties 1 white onion peeled and thin sliced 4 whole pickled jalapenos seeded and cut in strips 3 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp butter 1 lb. bacon fried and course chopped 8 oz grated Havarti jalapeno cheese Hamburger buns Condiments of choice Optional: sliced fresh avocado Texas Select Seasonings Jalapeno Dusted Texas Select Seasonings Rustic Rub Kenai BBQ sauce spicy

Directions Start by frying bacon and course chop, set aside. Grill onions and jalapenos in the olive oil/butter with a light coat of Jalapeno Dusted, set aside. I grill the burgers on the highest temp set of my Traeger Select Pro to 145 then baste one side of the patty with BBQ sauce and top with the sautĂŠed veggies, grated cheese and bacon. Cover until melted.

Add to a toasted bun with choice of condiments. For mine I like mayo on one side of the bun with jalapeno mustard on the other and thin sliced avocado, tomato and romaine lettuce UNDER the melted hot patty. ENJOY!!

DOUBLE FEATURE This next recipe is paired with a favorite family holiday side dish I enjoy with wild game. The leftover praline sauce can be served warm over vanilla ice cream or cheesecake.

- Whole turkey breast -- brined 1 lb. boudin (Leo’s crawfish boudin from Galveston was used) - clarified butter - pepper jack cheese or - chopped pickled jalapenos or olives - hickory smoked bacon - TSS the Juicy Pig - TSS Herbal Red seasoning - TSS Salted Vodka and Grapefruit BBQ glaze

Remove from brine and wash. Butterfly breast out and tenderize with meat mallet.

Brush outside with clarified butter and season. Flip over and repeat. Spread thin layer of boudin across turkey and at the top make a line of cheese and peppers or olives to taste. Roll up the breast and cut into smaller pieces to wrap completely in bacon. Season bacon exterior with the Juicy Pig bbq rub and cook on an offset grill until an internal temperature of 160 then remove and glaze with salted vodka and grapefruit BBQ glaze.

Rest 8 minutes before slicing.

Praline Pecan Yams Directions

Wash, dry and lightly butter yams. Wrap in foil and bake at 350° until fork tender. Once cool to the touch, peel, cut in pieces and

place in a shallow pan. For the sauce, start by spreading the pecan halves on foil and applying a generous amount of cinnamon and the nutmeg. Broil until brown and remove from heat. In a saucepan, melt ½ stick of butter then add the remaining ingredients.

Bring to a boil then remove from heat and stir in pecans and all cinnamon from the foil. Return to heat and as soon as it boils remove, keep stirring until the foam settles and pour over yams. Cover and let rest 20 minutes before serving.

ow does a business cater to the entire Island, east to west, including downtown and even Tiki Island, and provide quality service and products to all? It is indeed a difficult endeavor, but for Josh Bullard and Bridget Anderson, the task is coming together beautifully.

Owners of “Don’t Be Salty Nutrition”, Josh and Bridget are realizing their dream of bringing the community together to celebrate health, nutrition, and to give the youth an appreciation of the healthy side of athletics.

They started with deliveries of their Herbalife nutritional teas and meal replacement shakes, but are now expanding to a store front at 6622 Stewart Road. Their love of the downtown area had already influenced them to make deliveries there. Then, they added the entire island and Tiki Island, without so much as a delivery charge.

Why this much dedication to getting their products out there? This is a passion of the heart for them. Growing up in East Texas with the strong community emphasis on athletics and bringing the community together through ball games and school events, Josh and Bridget want the same for Galveston. They both feel that taking the approach of introducing a healthy lifestyle through their products, and their new shop, they can contribute to their vision.

healthy habits,” said Josh.

Already a hit with many on the island, the teas are loaded with vitamins and minerals that are geared toward energy and vitality.

“I was an avid 5 Hour Energy and Red Bull drinker,” said Bridget who works in the healthcare industry and knew that was not a healthy approach, “I now only drink the teas and shakes and never need the 5 Hours or Red Bull.”

Traveling with his job in oil and gas, Josh had been introduced to the Herbalife Teas and Shakes in another area of Texas. Once Bridget got a taste, she was hooked on the flavor and clean energy. Working in healthcare throughout the COVID-19 outbreak, the decision was made to bring the drinks to the island by opening their “Don’t Be Salty Nutrition” shop.

“Eventually, we will have healthy waffles and protein donuts that my family already enjoy at home, but we plan to make them in the shop, too,” said Bridget.

The resurgence of Herbalife products and the nutritional drink shops has swept across the country, but Galveston Island has yet to enjoy the possibilities of it’s combinations and health benefits. Josh and Bridget are making it happen and making sure it spreads from the West End to the East End, downtown and all in between, through their deliveries.

ell, everyone, believe it or not, it is gobble, gobble time. Thanksgiving is just around the corner!

Bunny usually tries to get everyone to do the cooking, and I bring the beverages. It’s EASY that way. But this year, out of the kindness of my heart, I said I would bring a pie. And trust me, folks, this is EASY. About as easy as the no-bake cookies that were in last Novembers issue. I was going through old family recipes and found this.

So, dig in your pantry. You may have to go to the store for a couple of items, but it’s a winner.

• ½ cup Bisquick • ¾ cup sugar • 4 eggs • 2 cups of milk (I’m sure back then they used whole milk, but use what is best for you) • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 2 tablespoons of butter, softened • 1 cup Coconut

Directions Combine all the ingredients and pour into a 9-inch buttered pie pan. Bake at 400 degrees for 25-30 minutes. The magic of this, is it layers itself. How simple is that?

Another addition I might do for dessert is a really EASY one. Everyone still loves pudding I presume. Grab a box of pudding mix, Banana, tapioca, etc., follow directions.

Then get some Pepperidge Farm Chessmen Butter cookies, and crumble them on top!!

Yummy.

with Jan & D ea n Hi Jan and Dean. I have run into a serious problem with my husband and the arrangements in our household.

David’s best friend, Darrell, is in the process of getting a divorce and has moved in with us. I didn’t mind it at the time because I really like him. My problem is that it has been months now and Darrell doesn’t seem to be looking for a place to live.

To top it off, my husband just got furloughed from his job and now he is home all of the time. What irks me the most is that I am the only breadwinner now. When I come home and see these two laying around on our couches, watching television, playing video games, eating junk food, and getting fatter by the minute, it makes me mad!

If they aren’t at home, they are at the local bar having drinks and playing pool. I have talked to my husband and he says that Darrell is strapped for money right now. My husband also tells me that his furlough is nothing and that he will be hired back soon. In the meantime, I get up every morning, put in more than eight hours at work, and come home to them being all buddy-buddy, like they were still in their frat house.

So, what should I do about this situation? I’m about to move out and let them be unemployed frat boys again.

You say if they aren’t laying around on the couch eating junk food, they are out at their local bar having drinks and shooting pool. Having drinks in a bar isn’t cheap. Where do they get the money to do this all of the time? Do they get it from you? If so, shame on you.

You need to put your foot down, Abbey. Give Darrell a firm date on when he needs to be gone from your house. Enforce it! Do the same with your frat boy hubby. Tell him you want him out looking for a job and demand that he gets one. I’m a firm believer that most people that get taken advantage of allow themselves to be treated that way. Don’t you be that person.

Human Nature vs Mother Nature

uring Hurricane Laura while we had evacuated Galveston to check on Kathy’s parents, I heard a commercial on the radio from an insurance company that appealed to its listeners that “together Human Nature is stronger than Mother Nature”. What it was implying was that together we will get through this weather event by relying on each other and the good that exists within us. This really made me think about the Islanders and our constant dealings with Mother Nature and each other.

It really got me to thinking about God’s plan for mankind and how faith, nature, and man are to exist. This Reflection is a personal perspective, and I hope it will help during not only these weather events, but also the COVID-19 pandemic, as well. I believe God created the heavens and the earth and everything in between, including “Mother Nature”. It includes some of the many topics that are on people’s minds today: pandemics, hurricanes, volcanoes, forest fires, tornadoes, floods, pestilence, droughts, and global warming.

Many are asking how Mother Nature could do so much damage and affect the lives of so many people? All I can say: “It’s a part of life....”

Mother Nature throws things at us all the time and its Human Nature to “react” to her, to innovate, industrialize, find medical advancements and sometimes, just “get out of the way”! It is our job to find ways to exists in all parts of the world and its Mother Nature to react to the conditions placed upon her accordingly.

This is how the world has been since the beginning of time.

No doubt Human Nature has done marvelous things over time to respond to what Mother Nature has thrown at us. We have learned to build shelter and structures to resists different climates and weather conditions. We Islanders built the magnificent “Seawall” that has protected this island since 1905. We have learned how to farm and feed billions of people, eradicate common diseases and we now can communicate over thousands of miles instantaneously. Not bad from using sticks and stones a few thousands of years ago. But hey, do not count Mother Nature out. Time and time again she has shown us WE are never really in control.

Our problems are not always with Mother Nature, because our interactions will always exist, but our real problems are between each other, or our “human interactions”. We are spending more time trying to destroy each other instead of finding ways to live with each other. We used to literally drop everything to help our neighbors and rebuild our communities. So, what’s changed? We are consumed by greed, power, and control. We are looking for someone to blame, pitting one side against another; it’s always someone else’s fault. Instead of taking “our challenges” and using the best of Human Nature to solve it, we go to the worst of mankind.

We can choose to love, be kind, be charitable, to forgive, to find ways to work together and coexist; or we can choose to hate, blame to be controlled by power and greed. We are constantly bombarded with negativity in the media. We are desensitized to the brutality of hate by using the word “racist” and violence against anyone who disagrees with another’s point of view. We Islanders are better than that and this must stop!

To coexist with Mother Nature, we must find ways to protect her and not harm her. We are beginning to understand that our actions can hurt Mother Nature. She finds ways to take care of herself through stronger storms, more violent weather, pandemics, droughts, and floods. We will never control mother nature!

Nothing that man can create is more powerful than her because she was created by God. I think we have forgotten who is in control. We have put our “faith” in man’s abilities to control every aspect of creation, but recently we found out just how vulnerable we are to the COVID-19 pandemic and 2 powerful hurricanes.

Before the industrialized revolution and technological advances, we used to rely on faith, family, our neighbors (our island friends).

Now we rely on 24hr news cycles, Facebook, and Twitter.

It’s not too late to find the best in each of us, to live and to coexist with Mother Nature. It is a choice. WE must choose what we will leave to the next generation. It’s not too late, but it is a real concern.

olunteering at the Ronald House brings a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment to those who are willing to give a few hours to perform minor but essential tasks needed in the every-day function of a home as large as this one is. Twenty bedrooms, nearly all occupied at the same time, some families staying for only a day or two while others come for much longer visits up to a month or more in some cases.

If you have special skills, training, hobbies or speak any foreign languages, please come share with us…can you lead a group in singing along with your musical talent…can you teach the children to speak a few words or sing a song in your native or learned language…do you know a special dance (think “chicken dance” or the “cha-chacha” or “folklorico”) all children love to sing and dance. Karaoke is a favorite if you own a machine!

Duties that need to be done on a daily basis include acting as a receptionist and answering phone calls, preparation of rooms for incoming families, helping in the business office, cooking and baking, playing Bingo and hosting family activities as well as providing “arts and crafts” sessions. Host a party! Halloween, Christmas, Valentines, Easter, Birthdays…etc.

We are always seeking friendly, energetic and creative volunteers… let that be you!
