John Moseley:

A COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUE WILL BE PLACED IN THE NEWLY MINTED JOHN MOSELEY MEMORIAL PARK. It’s safe to say John Moseley left his mark on Altavista after coming to the town in 1909 to work for the Lane Box Company—over 100 years later, the town has officially decided to call a previously unnamed park on Avondale Avenue John Moseley Memorial Park.

Altavista Town Council member Reggie Bennett said Moseley is an important figure in Altavista’s history.

“I think he’s a good role model not only for now, but for the future,” Bennett said.

Bennett said he grew up near Moseley Heights Elementary School, and that he became concerned after the school was decommissioned, making Moseley’s name was much less visible in the community.

“If he’s important enough to have a school named after him, then he should be remembered,” Bennett said.

Bennett said he hopes a plaque or sign of sort can be placed in the park by the end of the year, but is unsure when that and other improvements planned for the park will take place.

Though a number of landmarks in Altavista can be attributed to Moseley, Avoca Museum Director Michael Hudson said he was originally from Charlotte Court House, not the Altavista area.

Moseley came shortly after both the town of Altavista and the Lane Box Company, which would eventually become the Lane Company, were founded.

“The arrival of John Moseley in Altavista I would say was the windfall, a red-letter day in the community,” Hudson said.

According to census records Moseley was likely born in 1877 and came to Altavista at about 29 years of age.

Hudson said the Lanes encouraged Moseley to go into business for himself around 1912 or 1913. Moseley did, starting a cement company.

After achieving success as an entrepreneur, Moseley did not forget about his neighborhood, getting help from the Lanes to build homes in the area that would eventually become Moseley Heights for the black community in Altavista. Hudson said Moseley offered his neighbors business counselling and direct financial assistance, and also helped build First Baptist Church on Twelfth Street in Altavista shortly after arriving in town.

Moseley was a pillar of the black community in town, and was able to persuade other families who would also become prominent parts of the town’s black community as businesspeople and educators, like the Taylors or the Minnises, who would later found a mortuary that still stands in town today.

Hudson said census records indicate Moseley married a woman named either Carrie or Callie, and had six children, four daughters and two sons.

Census records also indicate that Moseley was literate, and that in 1930 his home was worth about $5,000.

They also show that his mother-in-law lived with him at one time, and that his wife’s maiden name could have been Arnold. Records also show Moseley’s middle initial as H. Hudson said that by all accounts Moseley was wellrespected as an industrious and honest many by the time of his death, which according to his tombstone was in 1947.

“One of his lasting contributions to the town of Altavista was that he encouraged other black families to come to Altavista and make their lives here just as he had.“ Hudson said.

Hudson said Avoca is currently looking for living relatives of Moseley to learn more about his life.

Throw more than just a party at Hack and Hew Jenny Haugh

Matthew Roseveare opened Hack & Hew with the goal of, in his words, “Delivering an exciting experience all while keeping safety as the top priority.”

Roseveare grew up in the Lynchburg area, and then went on to Virginia Tech and eventually began working as a mechanical engineer. He used this design and application experience, along with a love of the outdoors and previous outdoor skill training, to create Hack & Hew. Roseveare has turned an old daycare building located in Wyndhurst into an indoor venue equipped with safety cages, targets, and a small arsenal of outdoor equipment, with more on the horizon.

“Right now, when you come in or book a session, you get a lane, a throwing coach, and a choice of axes and tomahawks. In the future we are looking to expand into specialty rental items, offering niche options, and expanding into leagues and tournaments,” Roseveare said.

Not only is the venue set up for adults, but children are also welcome. Roseveare said, “We require safety waivers for everyone, and we provide a throwing coach to help. We were thinking 14 and up, but we have had younger children come in, and if they are properly supervised, children are welcome.” For younger children, they offer smaller sized options and direct, hands on coaching.

Hack & Hew is also set up for corporate events, birth-

days, bachelor and bachelorette parties, and other groups. They offer an option to book the whole building, and allow parties to bring in food, have access to several coaches, and even choose the background music for the event.

This is Roseveare’s, “first business, so there have been so many learning points. I’m thankful for my coworkers who see things that I don’t.” Currently, the business is a total of 4 people, each one coming with a different skill set to help grow the business and add their own area of expertise.

Because he runs a small business, Roseveare also feels supporting other local businesses is important. He said,“This business is intentional in helping young professionals and families grow together and create unique opportunities not found anywhere in central Virginia.”

As the business continues to grow, plans are to incorporate basic survival training and outdoor courses.

Roseveare said they are also considering adding the following: “bar, sliders, some type of food on site, we even have room for one of those giant bouncy castles.”

Hack & Hew is located at 114 Hexham Dr. in Lynchburg, and open Monday-Thursday 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. They take reservations online, for $20 an hour or $35 for two hours. Walk-ins are also welcome at the same rate and have an additional option of $10 for half an hour if you’re short on time.

Hat Creek Golf Course has a story or two

Glennie Singleton and her husband had no idea how to use their land when they could no longer lease it to the tobacco farmer who had worked it for years—that is until 1975, when they decided to turn it into a golf course.

Hat Creek Golf Course now draws golfers from miles around, and is still owned and operated by the Singleton family. Glennie’s son, Bill Singleton, now runs the course, though Glennie can still be found in the pro shop kitchen, cooking her famous “Glennie burgers.” Singleton said she still remembers coming home from her second job to help prepare the golf course to be opened 45 years ago.

“I’d come in from work and pick up rocks and help them out there getting it ready to go,” Singleton said.

Singleton was raised by her grandparents, from whom she inherited the land the golf course now rests on.

12 • Discover Campbell County 2020 Since it was founded Hat Creek has grown in popularity, at times serving as more than just a golf course—it’s also hosted weddings and funerals for those close to the family and even had two planes make emergency landings on the course.

The course has also undergone renovations since its opening, and many of its features have been recognized for the skill with which they were made.

“The Virginia State Golf Association was pretty impressed with what we were doing,” Bill Singleton said about a recent step feature that was added to one of the course’s holes.

Though Singleton is a jack of all trades at the course, doing much of the course’s landscaping, mechanical work on golf carts and more, both he and his mother agree that the best part of the running the course is their customer base, especially those who started playing at Hat Creek as kids.

“I’ve got a bunch of adopted sons,” Singleton said.

In addition to his adopted sons, Singleton’s children have also taken to golf, growing up playing the course.

Singleton has two sons, one of whom played golf at Liberty University and one who appeared on American Ninja Warrior, and a daughter who lives near the golf course and helps Singleton with the business from time to time.

The course has nine holes, and hosts local tournaments throughout the year, as well as local high school golf teams. It also has a driving range, and a swimming area that’s used by local camps when the weather is warm.

Now housed in a modern building, the course’s pro shop offers refreshments, clubs, tees, balls and more.

Glennie Singleton spoke fondly of her years at the golf course, but said jokingly that her grandparents may not have felt the same way.

“I know my grandmother and grandfather turned over in their graves a number of times wondering ‘What in the world is Glennie Ruth doing with that good tobacco farm?’” Singleton said.

CHURCH STREET BRIDAL

Selling beautiful dresses for a worthy cause A.J. O’LeAry, ALtAvistA JOurnAL editOr Church Street Bridal’s mission is more than just selling wedding dresses.

“It’s twofold,” said store manager Sheilah MercerArrington. “It’s giving a dream and taking away a nightmare.”

Opened in 2004, Church Street Bridal sells high-end dresses that are donated to them from bridal shops around the country at affordable prices. Proceeds from each sale go towards helping YWCA clients who are impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, homelessness or housing insecurity.

The store is located at 626 Church Street in Lynchburg in the historic YWCA Town Center building, built in 1918. Mercer-Arrington said Church Street Bridal has a nice, spacious interior with lots of natural lighting.

“It’s decorated elegantly,” Mercer-Arrington said.

“It’s a very large salon. And we have big dressing rooms so the brides don’t feel cramped.”

Most of the shop’s dresses sell for between $200 and $600, though it receives dresses as expensive as $29,000. The shop receives donations from Amsale, Becky’s Bridal, Bridal Elegance, Designer Loft, Fabulous Frocks, Faviana and many other bridal shops, which Mercer-Arrington said gives the store an impres-

sive variety of dresses for brides to choose from.

“They walk in and they say ‘Wow, look at all these dresses!’ And it’s just like their mouths are watering,” she said about brides who are seeing the store for the first time. “They can’t wait to get into one.”

Mercer-Arrington worked as an accountant for years before starting at Church Street Bridal in 2012. She said she first came to Central Virginia on a visit. After moving to the area her sister, then on YWCA’s board of directors, encouraged her to start volunteering at the shop.

“In my later years, I always wanted to do something fun,” Mercer-Arrington said. “I wanted to do something important.”

Mercer-Arrington said she now enjoys watching brides perk up as soon as they walk into the shop.

“It’s like working at Disney World, only I have lifesized Barbie dolls to dress every day,” she said.

Since 2012 Church Street Bridal has expanded its salon and recently opened a new location called Church Street Bridal at Historic Rosemont Manor in Berryville.

While previously open for walk-ins only, for the last several months Church Street Bridal has been open by appointment only. Customers must book in advance on the store’s website.

Discover Campbell County 2020 • 15 “I think the brides really love the personal, one-onone attention without having three other brides standing there at the mirror with them,” Mercer-Arrington said.

Mercer-Arrington said most of their dresses run small, so customers should plan to try on dresses about two sizes larger than they normally would. She also said that because the store receives all its stock through donations, customers will not be able to order dresses they try on in another size—though regardless of a dress’s shape or size, Mercer-Arrington said brides can feel good about where their money is going at Church Street Bridal.

“When we sell that dress,” Mercer-Arrington said.

“I know that I have the money to take away the nightmare of a victim or somebody who has been sexually assaulted that you know is not in a happy place like the brides are.”

Going the distance to make a difference A.J. O’Leary, Altavista Journal Editor

Between wildfires in several western states and a higher-than-usual number of tropical storms and hurricanes brewing in the Atlantic, 2020 has seen no shortage of natural disasters. Though rebuilding can be difficult, many across the nation, including several locals, have volunteered their time to help victims of such disasters with groups like the American Red Cross.

Linda Rice, a Gladys resident, has gone on 65 deployments with the American Red Cross to disasters across the nation. The week of September 9, Rice was quarantining after time spent in Santa Cruz, California helping the victims of wildfires in the area.

“Those people out there, they need us,” Rice said.

“They need all the help they can get.”

Rice said she spent this deployment on fair grounds where hundreds of refugees were living in trailers and tents. Rice said many of those affected were farmers, and that there were hundreds of horses, pigs and other farm animals roaming the grounds. Rice said she could

smell smoke at times from where she was stationed and could see it faintly in the distance.

Rice said she mostly worked in the kitchen serving those displaced by fires before switching shortly before she left to registering people wishing to stay on site.

Rice said that it’s gratifying for her to be able to help people when they need it most, and that one of the most

important aspects of her role as a volunteer is listening to clients.

“Just to sit down and listen to them and let them tell you their story, that means the world to them,” Rice said.

“It’s really a pleasure to be able to get out and meet people that have needs and be able to help them,” Bunting said.

Bunting said he volunteers regularly with the Lynchburg Red Cross to help people who have been affected

by fires and has done disaster assessment work with the American Red Cross to assess the damage done to homes after various disasters. On his most recent deployment Bunting split his time between Baton Rouge and Lake Charles inspecting volunteer shelters and warehouses.

Discover Campbell County 2020 • 29 Known to local folks as, “The Granary,” the original railroad supply warehouse and grain mill at 1507 Main Street in Altavista has been repurposed as a modern industrial style event space. Originally built in the 1950s, the warehouse eventually turned into River Valley Resources. Owners Chris and Sarah Germeroth rebuilt River Valley Resources closer to the road several years ago, and the historic building became a storage space.

When their daughter announced her engagement, she needed a venue.

“We started looking at venues and pricing for our daughter’s wedding and decided we could repurpose our building,” Germeroth said.

They worked almost continually to prepare the fourstory building in time for the wedding day.

“We have done 95 percent of the work ourselves,” Germeroth said. “Chris used to be in contracting, so we worked every day for months to get the space ready. We built all the tables ourselves, and our daughter Leona spent months sanding and polishing them all.”

“It’s a good spot for just about any type of wedding.

We have some beautiful industrial pictures taken with the factories and railroad in the background, and then we have some people with a lovely woodland ceremony out in the fields,” Germeroth said.

While they have long term plans for renovations, Germeroth said the current space is big enough to hold 200 people, and includes spacious bathrooms, a large kitchen area, and a wide outdoor patio. The banquet room boasts restored concrete floors, oversized windows, and thousands of lights strung throughout the ceiling rafters.

The Granary works with other local vendors and likes to refer people to nearby businesses.

“We have a list of wonderful local vendors, including caterer, photographer, seamstress, wedding coordinator and more, and we are happy to share that information when people come to look at the space,” Germeroth said.

Germeroth said they are excited to be able to share such a unique part of Altavista’s history.

“We want to make the space available to the community, and we are trying to be affordable. We love sharing other local vendors, like the bed and breakfast over on Frazier Road, and we are trying to share our spot with the community” Germeroth said.

Packed with local history, beautiful fields, and a cozy interior, The Granary looks to be on track as a popular local option for weddings and events.

A.J. O’Leary, Altavista Journal Editor Though modern small businesses and manufacturing fill much of Campbell County today, history is very much alive in the county’s western corner where centuries-old farms, churches and relics of industry inhabit rolling fields and vibrant forests.

The Virginia Department of Historic Resources announced on September 17 that the Flat Creek Rural Historic District, a 1,201 acre site located near Evington, was approved for a listing on the Virginia Landmarks Register (VLR) by the Virginia Board of Historic Resources. 15 other sites in the state were also approved.

“You can see so much going on there over two centuries,” said Michael Pulice, who helped with the paperwork needed to have the Flat Creek area nominated for a spot on the VLR. The VLR is a list of areas in Virginia recognized for

34 • Discover Campbell County 2020 their historic significance. Though the approval doesn’t guarantee placement on the list, it would be unlikely for the property, which includes structures built over 200 years ago, not to make the list at this point.

“It’s not very often that I see anything from the Eighteenth Century,” Pulice said.

The area includes Flat Creek Farm, established in 1796, East Hills Farm and Saunders Saw Mill, established in 1926 and 1946 and Good Shepherd Church, an Episcopal church built in 1871. It is also home to several log buildings built in the 1800s, including a quarters for enslaved people.

Pulice worked on the area’s nomination with Sara Hollberg, its primary author. Hollberg is a descendant of parishioners of one of the area’s main landmarks, Good Shepherd Church.

“It’s sort of an unchanged landscape,” Hollberg said about the property.

Hollberg began working on having the Flat Creek area recognized by the VLR over a decade ago. Hollberg said the Flat Creek area is somewhat unusual for its status as a rural historic district, as most historic districts are found in downtown areas.

“If you drive through it you might miss it,” Hollberg said.

Yet the area’s structures, many made of wood or brick from the property itself, represent an unusually high concentration of historic buildings. According to the nomination written by Hollberg and Pulice, Flat Creek constitutes something of a trip through time.

“These varied resources represent the locations and context for the daily activities of different types of households, farming practices, and mining operations

in the rural Piedmont from 1797 through 1965,” the nomination reads.

Hollberg is the secretary of the Good Shepherd Society, the group that preserves the Good Shepherd Church on the property. Made up of mostly original features aside from needed vinyl siding, the neat, white structure rests on a well-kept lawn across the street from a rectory and stable built for the church’s minister who travelled between several churches in the area by horse and buggy.

The church’s cemetery holds such notables as World War I Ace Mark Saunders and Irene Gibson, the wife of well-known illustrator Dana Gibson’s who is perhaps best known as the Gibson Girl because of a famous portrait of her done by her husband.

Billy McCarthy, treasurer of the Good Shepherd Society, performs much of the church’s maintenance, such as window and siding replacements. Like Hollberg, McCarthy is also a descendant of the church’s original parishioners.

“My family’s buried down there in the cemetery and my parents were married in the church in 1946. And I have a sister and two infant brothers buried down there, plus two great grandparents, grandparents, many great aunts and uncles too,” McCarthy said. “So it means a lot to me just try to keep it going.”

Though status as a historic site on the VLR only prevents some federal actions, it places the impetus on the surrounding community to protect the area’s outstanding features—something people like McCarthy and Hollberg have taken to eagerly.

“We can’t just assume that it will be preserved,” Pulice said. “But the designation puts it on everybody’s radar.”

Discover Campbell County 2020 • 37 Governor Northam announced on Juneteenth that the Campbell County Training School, along with 19 other Af African American history sites in the state, would be receiving a historical marker.

The school, which is currently under renovation, is located at 1470 Village Highway in Rustburg. It was the only high school for African American students in Campbell County for much of the 1900s until another was built in the 1950s and area schools were desegregated in 1969.

Current plans are to turn the school’s auditorium into a gathering place for family reunions, conferences and other events. The Campbell County Board of Supervisors placed the school, made up of four buildings on a nine acre lot, in the care of the Campbell County NAACP, which created a committee to oversee the site’s restoration.

38 • Discover Campbell County 2020 Millicent Nash, chairperson of the Campbell County Training School Committee, said she will be elated once the auditorium is fully renovated.

“The importance of it is that we do have a period when our grandparents were educated in this particular building, so we want to keep the legacy alive, and also share this history with the community,” Nash said. “That was so important to us.”

The Campbell County Training school was built with funding from the Julius Rosenwald Foundation, which helped pay for roughly 5,000 schools in the South after the Civil War. Two locals, Gabe T. Hunt and Reverend Thomas T. Tweedy, also helped pay for the school. As a training school it sought to give male students building and agricultural skills and female students homemaking skills. Booker T. Washington’s thoughts on education had significant influence on the school’s curriculum.

At one time there were 16 Rosenwald schools in Campbell County. The Campbell County Training school is now the only one left.

Nash said she hopes once the auditorium is fin-

ished, the committee will make enough money hosting events in that space to renovate the other school buildings on site.

“This is a project that not only the committee is a part of, but the whole community is a part of,” Nash said.

Nash said she wants to thank the county for its role in making the old school buildings available for renovation, which at one time served as the county school administration buildings.

“Our county was very instrumental in helping preserve the buildings as they are now,” Nash said. “We want to make that known.”

Nash said that along with preserving the Campbell County African American community’s history, she hopes the Campbell County Training School buildings will have wider reaching effects.

“Along with sharing our history, we want to know other histories as well that have been forgotten or not taken into consideration, that have built this great country that we’re living in today,” Nash said. “Everybody’s history is important.”
