LIMESTONE COUNTY

Limestone County, population 23,384, was established in April 1846 from Robertson County. Fort Parker, near the Navasota River in what is now central Limestone County, was the earliest actual settlement in the area. Limestone County’s original county seat was Springfield, but it was moved to Groesbeck in 1873. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 933 square miles, of which 905 square miles is land and 28 square miles is water.

MEXIA

The city of Mexia is located at the intersection of U.S. 84 and Hwys. 14 and 171. It is approximately 40 miles east of Waco and about 1-1/2 hours south of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Named after General José Antonio Mexía, a Hispanic hero for the Republic of Texas Army during the Texas Revolution, the town was founded near his estate, whose ownership dates to 1833. Mexia was platted in 1870 by the Houston and Texas Central Townsite Company, a sister company of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad. Lots went on sale in 1871, a post office was granted in 1872, and Mexia was incorporated the following year. A large deposit of natural gas was discovered in 1912 by the Mexia Gas and Oil Company and in 1920, the Mexia Oilfield was found. These discoveries led to rapid population growth in the area. The prosperity generated by the boom, however, only lasted until the 1930s, when the Great Depression forced many people to leave in search of work. The number of residents in the town stabilized at 6,500 in the early 1930s; the 2011 population was 7,539.

The auditorium available for rent only. The balcony is not available AMENITIES: There are 58 tables that are rectangular, 2 1/2 feet by 6 feet, and approximately 300 chairs. Maximum occupancy is 400 people. The Convention Center has a full kitchen with ice machine. RENTAL: For those living within the city limits: $300 deposit / $300 daily rental; for those living outside the city limits: $400 deposit / $400 daily rental. Optional cleaning fee: $300 before renting; non-refundable. Simply remove food; city workers will put away tables and chairs, sweep and mop. Use of microphone: $25 INSURANCE: Alcohol Liability Insurance Policy coverage must be for at least $500,000. Two peace officers for security are required; they must be approved by the police chief. DEPOSIT: The deposit will be returned after 10 days of your rental date, provided everything is clean and the city does not have to sweep or mop, and there are no damages.

AMENITIES: There are a limited number of tables and chairs. It is recommended you bring additional chairs and tables. The house contains two bathrooms, two small rooms, and a kitchen with stove and refrigerator. It is an old building, and has two window-unit air-conditioners; it is recommended those renting the facility bring fans if they need additional cooling. Although it is not a new, modern facility, it is frequently used and well worth the rental price. The Girl Scout House is located in Hughes City Park which has a curfew of 10 p.m.

Pavilion

The Pavilion in the park may be reserved at no cost, but users must obtain a letter from the executive assistant to the city manager which will give access to the pavilion without a problem. Many times reunion groups rent the adjacent Girl Scout House, which is air-conditioned, in conjunction with the Pavilion. The Pavilion has lights for night time usage. The Girl Scout House and Pavilion are located in Hughes City Park, which has a curfew of 10 p.m. GSH and Pavilion rentals must abide by that curfew.

GROESBECK

The city of Groesbeck was dedicated as a township by the Houston and Texas Central Railroad in 1869 and was named for Abraham Groesbeeck, one of its directors. The development of a city government began on April 11, 1871, when the town was incorporated by an act of the legislature. On April 12, 1871, a post office was established and the name was listed as Groesbeck. This name stuck. Groesbeck became the county seat of Limestone County on Dec. 20, 1873. Located centrally in the area between Houston, Austin, and the Dallas/ Fort Worth Metroplex, the Groesbeck area has built an economy long based on agriculture, which has recently expanded to various mining enterprises and several small manufacturing industries. Because of its central location, Groesbeck offers all of the necessary amenities to a family while providing the security of a small town. In addition, the area offers many recreational facilities, such as Fort Parker State Park, and Lake Limestone, which provide relaxation for its citizens and tourists. Additionally, its rich history is preserved in the many historical sites in the area. Old Fort Parker is known to be the site of the kidnapping of Cynthia Ann Parker, who later became the mother of Quanah Parker, the last Comanche chief. The Confederate Reunion Grounds provided the location for many county-wide activities and is preserved today. As of the census of 2000, there were 4,291 people, 1,297 households, and 878 families residing in the city. The current population of the city is 4,328.

COOLIDGE

Coolidge is at the intersection of Hwy. 171 and FM 73, 11 miles northwest of Mexia in northern Limestone County. It was established in 1903 while the Trinity and Brazos Valley Railway was laying track between Hillsboro and Mexia and was named in honor of a stockholder in the company. Coolidge was incorporated in 1905, and by 1910 had a population of 500. By 1914 Coolidge had two banks, a weekly newspaper and a variety of businesses. By the early 1930s the population had risen to 1,169. The community experienced a serious setback in 1942, when the railroad decided to abandon its track through the town. The population rose again to 966 by 2011.

TEHUACANA

Tehuacana is at the intersection of Hwy. 171 and FM 638, 6 miles northwest of Mexia in northwestern Limestone County. In 1847, a post office called Tewockony Springs was established, named for the Tawakoni Indians who once lived in the area. The town became known as Tehuacana Hills after the Tehuacana Academy opened in 1852. The Civil War led to closure of the post office, but it reopened in 1869 under the community name of Tehuacana. In 1869, the Cumberland Presbyterian Church made Tehuacana the site of Trinity University. By the mid1880s Tehuacana had about 500 residents, and in 1890 the town was incorporated. Trinity University moved in 1902, so the property was deeded to the Methodist Church, which opened Westminster College. In 1903 the Trinity and Brazos Valley Railway opened a line between Cleburne and Mexia that passed through Tehuacana, helping the population rise to 615 by the mid-1920s. But the track was abandoned in 1942. In 1942, Southwestern University absorbed Westminster College, then closed it in 1950. In 1953, the campus became Westminster Junior College and Bible Institute. The population of Tehuacana declined through the 1980s, reaching 265 in 1982. In 2014 the population was 239.

KOSSE

Kosse is on Hwys. 14 and 7 near the Falls County line in southwestern Limestone County. Settlers made homes by nearby Duck Creek in the mid-1840s and ran a stage stop for the Franklin-Springfield and Waco-Marlin stage routes. In 1869, Kosse became the end of the Houston and Texas Central Railway and was named for Theodore Kosse, a chief engineer for the railroad the man who surveyed the road for the town. Businesses moved to Kosse from Eutaw, two miles west, and the Eutaw post office was moved to Kosse in 1870. Development of a town government began in 1871. The community reached a population of 500 by 1880. The Kosse schools were consolidated with the Groesbeck Independent School District in 1968. A 2009 U.S. Census Bureau estimate placed the population at 507. Kosse calls itself “A Little Town with a Big Heart.”

THORNTON

Thornton is on Hwy. 14, 19 miles southwest of Mexia in southwestern Limestone County. Settlement at the site began in 1868. The Houston and Texas Central Railway ran a line from Hearne to Groesbeck through the area in 1870, and Cain Hogan settled on Steele Creek just west of the present townsite. The community became a stop on the railroad and was named for John E. Thornton, another early settler. In 1873 a Thornton post office opened with William L. Wright as postmaster. Soon cotton gins were set up nearby, and ceramics were manufactured from the fine, white clay found in that locality. Agriculture was the mainstay of the area. In 2010, the population was 526.

The City of Fairfield is at the junction of U.S. 84, Interstate 45, and Texas 75. Originally called Mound Prairie, Fairfield was chosen for the county seat in 1850 when Freestone County separated from Limestone County. The original town site was 100 acres and donated by David Hall Love. By 1884 the town had a population of 500 with two hotels, four general stores, and five grocery stores and served as a shipping point for cotton and hides. By 1892 the town had a bank and Baptist, Methodist, and Cumberland Presbyterian churches. The community experienced a series of reverses around 1900. A meningitis outbreak killed thirty-two people in 1890, a tornado heavily damaged the central area of town in 1902, the boll weevil scourge destroyed the cotton crop in 1903, and fire ravaged part of the business district in 1911. Fairfield now boasts a population of roughly 3,000 residents.

The City of Teague was first settled around the Civil War era and originally called Brewer. The small town population exploded in 1906 after the Trinity and Brazos Valley Railway was built, the same year Brewer was renamed Teague – after Betty Teague, niece of a railroad magnate.

WORTHAM

In November 1871, a post office was established in what is now Wortham, but the town name was Long Bottom, a corruption of the original owner’s name (Longbotham). In 1874 the settlement was renamed Wortham in honor of Col. Rice Wortham, a merchant instrumental in convincing the railroad to build through the area. In 1885, Wortham was a small market center for area cotton farmers with several churches, steam grist and corn mills, cotton gins, a general store, and about 30 inhabitants. The town of Wortham was transformed by an oil boom in the 1920s. The population rose from 1,000 to some 30,000 at the height of the boom in 1925, but the boom ended by late 1927, and by 1929 the population had dropped to around 2,000. In 2010 Wortham had 1,073 residents and 15 businesses.

Confederate Reunion Grounds State Historical Park

The park entrance is 6 miles south of Mexia on Hwy. 14, then 2.5 miles west on FM 2705. Confederate reunions were held at this site from 1889-1946. Mexia Public Schools Museum

There is no charge for admission but donations are welcome. The Mexia Public Schools Museum officially opened on April 25, 1998 to serve as a depository of the Mexia Public Schools and Dunbar High School traditions and history. Limestone County Historical Museum

The Limestone County Historical Museum houses many interesting exhibits that document the history of Limestone County. On display are photographs and various other artifacts that provide information on Native Americans, early settlers, Fort Parker, communities and schools, the railroad, agriculture, military involvement, the Mexia Oil Boom and notable personalities. Old Fort Parker State Historic Site

Reconstructed Parker Family fort typical of early 19th century. Home where Cynthia Ann Parker was captured. Raised by the Comanches, she became the mother of Quanah Parker the last great Comanche chief. Visitors can explore cabins, climb the blockhouse and recapture the atmosphere of that fateful spring day in 1836. Fort Parker State Park

Fort Parker offers 25 campsites with water, electricity and restrooms with showers, 10 screened shelters, an activity center, playground, group pavilion, learning center, swimming, fishing, bird watching, hiking, biking, canoeing, boat tours, boat ramp, nature study and baseball/softball. Lake Mexia

Features a 1,400-acre lake, 11 campsites with water and electricity, a trailer dump station, restrooms with showers, picnic area, boat ramp, boat trailer parking and concessions. Location: On the Navasota River, 7 miles west of the city of Mexia off U.S. 84.

Lake Limestone

Lake Limestone is a 13,680-acre lake near Thornton created in 1978. Lake Limestone has extensive recreational facilities including fishing, motor boating, jet skiing, and swimming. Gently sloping banks, flooded timber, and an abundance and variety of aquatic vegetation offer anglers plenty of diverse cover to fish. Numerous boat houses and docks offer additional cover. Predominant fish include largemouth bass, white bass, crappie, and channel, blue and flathead catfish. Lake Limestone Campgrounds and Marina is located off FM 39 near Farrar. Running Branch Camp & Marina is located off FM 937 near Oletha. Located on the Navasota River, 15 miles southeast of Groesbeck, on FM 3371 in Leon, Robertson and Limestone counties

Freestone County Historical Museum

The Freestone County Historical Museum was established in 1967. Documents, manuscripts and artifacts were gathered throughout the county to place on display in the two-story brick 1880s jail. The Carter and Potter-Watson log houses were donated and moved into the complex during the next year, and state Historical markers were obtained for the three buildings. Over the years the board has been able to acquire additional land and buildings such as an Antique Telephone Building, given by Contel in 1991 (the phone collection has been moved into the Bass Wing) and the Bethel Assembly of God Church, which was moved onto the museum grounds and restored by the founder’s family. The most recent building is the Neil and Barbara Bass Wing, which houses a gallery of historic artifacts, a genealogy/research work room and an artifact storage room.

Fairfield Lake State Park

Fairfield Lake State Park, 1,460 acres, is northeast of the city of Fairfield in Freestone County. The park was acquired in 1971-1972 by lease from Texas Utilities and was opened to the public in 1976. Texas Utilities built its dam, creating Fairfield Lake as a cooling system for its new power plant. Activities include camping, backpacking, hiking, horseback riding on approximately 15 miles of day-use equestrian trails, nature study, bird watching, boating on a 2,400-acre lake, water skiing, jet skiing, fishing, and lake swimming in a large, buoyed sandy area. Fairfield Market Days are held January through December on the fourth weekend of the month. The market features unique vendors selling art, antiques, crafts and fresh produce. Indoor/outdoor shopping, fascinating demonstrations, children’s activities and delicious food. B-RI Railroad Museum

The B-RI Railroad Museum in Teague is open on Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children 12 and under. Special tours are available during weekdays for groups if you call in advance to arrange. The B-RI Railroad Museum includes two floors of artifacts, old photos and original depot furnishings from 1906. The second floor features a Veterans room, Early Teague Business room, Civic and Church room, School room and more.
