Visitors Guide. The Progress/Index has combined The Flats and North Bay Attractions into one publication titled The Flats Visitors Guide.

Aransas Pass, Ingleside, & Ingleside on the Bay are great places to come for a short trip or a one day visit.

We talk about all the fishing there is to do around the area, what you can catch, size limits and everything you

can do when you are out for a day of fishing our great bays.

We also have maps of Aransas Pass and Ingleside.

We list a lot of the places to stay overnight and most of the local eateries.

If needed, you can hire a guide to take you out fishing, and there are also kayaks that can be used for fishing or sight-seeing.

There are a lot of things to do in our area, just ask someone from around here and they will give you a

list of things to do and see.

The accessibility of fishing in and near Aransas Pass and Ingleside is abundant, with numerous locations from which to choose. Steadman’s Flats, from which this publication gets its name, is an area located between the Intracoastal Waterway and Morris and Cummings Cut near Aransas Pass, The Flats offer an extensive grass flat that features sandy potholes and deep water borders on all sides.

Primarily known as a redfish haven, its quick access to deep water makes it a good spot for ambushing trout and flounder as well.

The City of Aransas Pass, known as Harbor City, is located at the intersection of two major waterways – Laguna Madre and Redfish Bay. Aransas Pass has a rich history in the development of the Coastal Bend’s fishing industry. The In-

tercoastal Waterway (ICW) is intersected by the Aransas Shrimp Channel, giving Aransas Pass access to some fishing in the Coastal Bend in every direction.

The primary fishing area is Redfish Bay, also called Bird Island. The bay is a triangular-shaped area between Aransas Pass, which borders it on the north, and Port Aransas.

To the south is the Corpus Christi Ship Channel.

Redfish Bay is actually a complex of islands, grass flats, and channels with the only deep water located on its southern edge next to the Corpus Christi Ship Channel.

The grassy flats around Bird Island in the upper portion of Redfish Bay produce redfish and trout throughout the year.

The 14,000 acres of fragile grass flats is a rich generator of nutrients for all of the area bay systems

Fishing the Area and has been designated by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as a State Scientific Area.

Since 2006, the area has been designated as a no-prop zone which makes it illegal to run a boat through the seagrass in a way that would cause them to be uprooted.

The restriction does not prohibit access by boats or going through the area as long as the grass is not disturbed.

To be in compliance with the Seagrass regulation, boaters can drift through the area using a push pole or electric trolling motor.

The Aransas Channel is also known as the Shrimp Channel or the Shrimp Boat Channel due to the fact it was the main path for the massive gulf shrimp boat fleet housed at Conn Brown Harbor in Aransas Pass.

Ingleside is actually two communities on the north side of Corpus Christi Bay. Ingleside by the Bay is a small water front community south of the city.

Ingleside Cove separates the two communities and is the location of Cove Park, a water front park with boat

ramps, docks and picnic areas.

The boat launch at Ingleside offers excellent access to the La Quinta Channel, the north side of Corpus Christi Bay and is just around the corner from the Intracoastal waterway and the south end of Redfish Bay. Red drum, commonly called redfish, is a bay fish known for it is aggressive fight when hooked, and for also for its edibility.

Many guided fishing trips focus on catching redfish which attracts anglers from around the world to the area.

The redfish’s most distinguishing mark is one large black spot on the upper part of the tail base.

It is not uncommon to see multiple spots, but one having no spots is extremely rare.

Scientists be-

lieve the black spot near the tail helps fool predators into attacking the red drum’s tail instead of its head, which allows the fish to escape.

The daily bag limit for the red drum is three for keepers which must be a minimum length of 20 inches and maximum of 28 inches. During a license year, one red drum over the maximum length limit may be kept if a properly completed Red Drum Tag is attached to the fish.

For the first three years of its life, a

redfish lives in the bays or near passes.

It then moves from the bays to the Gulf of Mexico. As the large adults move to the gulf, possibly

for spawning, it is known as the “bull red run.”

The young redfish feeds on small crabs, shrimp and marine

worms. As they mature, crabs and shrimp continue to be part of their diet with the addition of small fish, which is why anglers use shrimp, crab,

Anglers who want to use artificial lures often choose small spoons which can be used in shallow water, and weedless ones in heavy or floating seagrass.

Floating or shallow-running fish plugs are often used over the grass flats.

Shrimp-like plastic worms and jigs are also popular.

If bait is in a column of water, the redfish will take advantage of the opportunity, but in general they are bottom feeders.

If they are feeding in shallow waters with heads down in

the seagrass, their tail may be above the surface of the water. This is known as “tailing.”

They are often found in water so shallow their backs are exposed while they are swimming.

During cold spells, redfish may be found in tidal creeks and rivers since they can also live in freshwater.

The skill involved and the excitement of catching redfish has led to the establishment of several fishing tournament trails specifically to test angler’s skill in catching the prized redfish.

The most frequently caught game fish in local waters is the Speckled Trout, known by the scientific community as the Spotted Seatrout, and locally referred to simply as a “trout” or a “spec.”

The seatrout is not actually a trout, but a member of the drum family.

It is an aggressive feeder and will often school in large numbers, which is great for anglers.

Speckled trout are found throughout the Coastal Bend. On warm, sunny days, trout can be found

around bait fish which stay in shallow water as they prefer shallow bays with oyster reefs or shallow grass beds.

They will move into deeper cuts or channels, up estuarial rivers and into the Gulf when temperatures drop or a lack of rainfall

cause a rise in salinity in the bays. The temperatures drop during the winter months and bring cold, cloudy days, at which time bait fish move to deeper water so the trout follow them.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department sets the daily bag limits for seatrout, and the limits vary in different parts of the Gulf Coast (see the chart on page 26).

Because of its relative abundance, excellent flaky meat, and good flavor, speckled trout are popular not only as a sport fish, but also as table fare.

The flounder swims near the bottom of the bay, par-

allel to the bottom, and uses its camouflage to ambush prey from drop offs, current swept points, and by burying itself in the sandy flats.

They are not born this way, however, as when they are smaller than a half-inch long, their right eye begins migrating to the other side of their head.

Licenses Needed to Fish in Area Waters

Fishing regulations in the State of Texas are set by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) which designates everyone 17 years of age or older must carry a valid driver’s license or personal identification card issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety when fishing, with some exceptions.

A valid fishing license with a freshwater or saltwater endorsement is required to take fish, mussels, clams, crayfish or other aquatic life in the public waters of Texas.

The first Saturday in June of each year is the annual Free Fishing Day and no person is required to have a fishing license while fishing on that day.

A fishing license is not required if fishing from the bank in a state park or in waters completely enclosed by a state park.

All other fishing

regulations, such as length and bag limits, remain in effect.

Recreational anglers must have a Texas fishing license and saltwater endorsement to possess in state water any fish taken in federal waters or possess fish on a vessel in the tidal waters of Texas.

All fishing licenses and stamps issued by the TPWD are valid from the date purchases until Aug. 31 of the following year, with the exception of lifetime licenses and ones purchased for a specific number of days,Recreational fishing licenses and endorsements are available at approximately 1,800 locations throughout the state in addition to the offices listed.

The left side then begins turning dark to blend in with the bottom. Since the right side of a flounder’s body is rarely exposed to sunlight, it turns white.

Flounder can tolerate a variety of salinity levels, but the largest populations will be found in moderately saline waters.

Coastal Bend bays have a prolific population of flounder from the month

of March through December.

This is the time the larger female flounder come into

the bays to feed after spawning.

Mostly all floun-

der caught in the bay system are female, as the smaller males tend to stay in the Gulf of Mexico all year.

Male flounder only grow to about 12 inches long, but the females that roam the bay system can grow up to 25 inches.

Hook and Ladder Brewpub: The Story

A few years ago, Jarel MaGie and Kathryn Foley were driving into Aransas Pass from Rockport early one evening.

Kathryn said she thought a nice cold beer would be good, but there was nowhere for them to go.

“That's when Jarel said, ‘Why don’t we build one,’” Kathryn said. “We looked at each other like the idea was crazy. Once we thought about it, though, we decided to go ahead and do it.”

Neither Jarel nor Kathryn had ever run a brewpub before, or even done anything like this venture.

“Jarel retired from the Department of Defense,” Kathryn said. “I worked in industrial psychology.”

So began the hunt for a building to build their brewpub in. That’s when they came across the old police station.

“Nothing else caught our eye but this building,” Kathryn said. “The building was big. We didn’t know the full history of the building at that time, but we had looked at the remains of the old jail cells.”

Jarel and Kathryn’s real estate agent was able to get the whole story on the old building for them.

“We liked the his-

tory,” Kathryn said.

“If we were going to build something in Aransas Pass, we wanted it to be Aransas Pass.”

They put in a bid on the building and left for Alaska, which is where Jarel is from.

While in Alaska, their bid was accepted and Kathryn came back down to complete the purchase.

They also purchased the land for the patio and parking lot separately during this time.

“We believe the building was built around the 1940s,” Kathryn said. “The jail cells and old fire department had been torn down, and the main building had also previously been an auto body shop and taxidermy shop.”

Though the building wasn’t in good condition when Jarel and Kathryn assumed ownership of it, that did not stop them. Aransas Pass did not yet have anything like the brewpub they had envisioned, and they were going to make it happen.

“It was a new concept, a new footprint,” Jarel said. “We thought we’d bring craft beer into the Coastal Bend, since there was nothing like it at the time.”

With the help of a few friends, Jarel deconstructed the old building so the new construction could

begin in January of 2018.

“James Andrews with South Texas Creations came over, and Jarel asked if he could build us a bar,” Kathryn said.

“We started on the floor and painting.

Jarel ground the flow down and removed pounds and pounds of concrete.”

They checked around for bids to do the floors, but everything they came across was high.

Eventually they ended up putting sealant on the floor and left it as it was. They also painted the ceiling and walls themselves.

Originally, the inside of the building was painted what was planned to be a gold color, but it turned out too yellow for Jarel and Kathryn's tastes. Eventually it ended up the light reddish brown color it is currently.

“Almost everything in here has been repurposed, even some of the tables,” Kathryn said.

“A lot of the wood is old fencing from around town. The bar is also old wood.”

Kathryn said they used as much local materials and help as they could.

“We were like scavengers, going everywhere trying to find stuff,” she said.

“The building really dictated what we were going to do.”

Though Jarel and Kathryn believed a brewpub would be good for Aransas Pass, not everyone thought it would succeed.

“We had an idea of just craft beers, some wines and a small menu of really tasty foods,” Kathryn said. “A lot of people told us it wouldn’t make it because we didn’t have mass-pro-

duced beers.”

Despite the naysayers, Hook and Ladder opened its doors on May 14, 2018. The inside of the pub was, according to Kathryn, kind of dedicated to first responders, especially the fire department. Even the brewpub’s name, Hook and Ladder, which was provided by a customer and friend, is dedicated to the fire department.

“We’re fortunate with all the support they give us,” she said.

Kathryn said, once Hook and Ladder opened, business was good from the beginning and, after a year, it was even better. They rarely had a slow night.

Once COVID-19 hit, bars had to shut down, but Jarel and Kathryn were not about to be counted down and out.

“We wanted to find a food trailer,” Kathryn said. “Once we did, it really helped us.”

Another fairly recent change to Hook and Ladder is the exterior color. Originally, the brewpub had been painted a bright green.

“We were going for the Irish pub look, and most of them are green,” Kathryn said. “But the building ended up just kind of disappearing with the green. We would have people at HEB, right across the street, asking where Hook and Ladder was.”

One night, one of Jarel and Kathryn’s friends, a developer from San Antonio, offered them some constructive criticism on their building.

“He said it should be red,” Kathryn said.

For the time Hook and Ladder was shut down due to COVID-19 and did not have a food trailer, Jarel took advantage of his free time and built a patio for Hook and Ladder, which also covered up the remains of the old jail cells. Next to this area is where the food trailer currently sits.

Even though building and owning a brewpub was new to Jarel and Kathryn, they both agree it was a good venture.

“My favorite part is that we get to meet some really wonderful people, and that I get to serve the community,” Kathryn said. “We can also come in when no one is here and just enjoy it.”

Jarel’s favorite part was more aligned with the success of Hook and Ladder.

“We created something from an idea that has been so successful, and we did it ourselves,” he said. “We had an idea about craft beer and we made it happen. I also like the customer relations.”

Kathryn agreed.

“We’re 73 and it’s great to know we still could do it,” she said. “We could do it because we weren’t afraid of failing.”

“We’ve had lots of support,” she said.

“In the past, we’ve had people hold parties here, even kids’ birthday parties.”

She said the community has always supported Hook and Ladder.

“We try not to be a bar,” Kathryn said.

“We’re a pub. They’re the same, but different.”

Server Elisa Flores has worked at Hook and Ladder for two years and said she loves working for a brewpub.

“I love meeting new people and learning where they’re from,” she said. “Work is like a getaway.”

Since the inside of Hook and Ladder reopened, Elisa said she has met a lot of new people.

I’m a server who

likes to talk and get to know people,” she said. “At least half of our regulars came back, and they surprise me from time to time.”

Elisa also said she loves working for Jarel and Kathryn.

“They show me appreciation; they tell me on a daily basis how I’m doing and that they’re proud of me,” she said.

“They’re very thankful and thoughtful.

I wouldn’t want to work for anyone else.

This is honestly my happiness.”

Elisa’s feelings toward Hook and Ladder and its owners is part of the vision Jarel and Kathryn had for their brewpub.

“Our intention from day one was to have a place where anyone could come in with whoever they wanted without fear of any problems,” Jarel said. “Everything we put into this place was focused on having a nice place to go.”
