Thank You Wavers For 3 Amazing Years!

ello there, Wavers. October 2020 is a very special date for our Waves Team. October 2020 marks our Third Year Anniversary. Three years ago, in October 2017, we launched Waves Magazine. To say we have come a long way since our premiere issue is quite an understatement. To be named Galveston’s Best Print Publication in our first full two years of publication, 2018 and 2019, is quite an honor, to say the least. All of our accomplishments haven’t come easily. A lot of hard work and determination goes into each and every issue. Most of all, it is you, our loyal readers and advertisers, that have made all of our success possible. We remain determined to bring you the most entertaining publication on the Island. That was our goal from our very beginning and it remains our goal today. Waves is truly a team effort. Take a look at our contributor list to the left of my column. What an impressive list it is. Everyone on that list strives each month to bring you the best publication available in Galveston. Many thanks to you all! I want to give a special mention to my partner and Executive Creative Director, Chris Bergeron. Not a day goes by that we don’t receive compliments on the design, layout, and great look of our Waves Magazine. We wouldn’t be close to the successful magazine we are without the

supreme talents of Chris Bergeron. I have never known anyone who works as hard as Chris does or has the talents that he possesses. It’s a pleasure working with you Chris. Thank you for your talents and friendship. I also want to offer my thanks to Tom Valliere and Charlie Bresenhan. Your tireless efforts and contributions regarding the Galveston Restaurant scene have made Waves the go-to source for Galveston dining information. Also, thank you both for your wonderful friendship. Again, I want to offer a SPECIAL THANK YOU to our loyal readers and advertisers. We couldn’t do it without you. Thank you so much! When every business is able to open at 100% capacity, we will have an Anniversary Party that will be one to remember. The great band Stranded is ready to entertain you, my terrific staff and I are ready to get together and see everyone, and I know our advertisers and readers are ready to party with us. It will happen! Have a great October and a happy and safe Halloween!

y dogs love to visit their favorite corner every day on their walks. This corner, complete with bushes and a fire hydrant, is a dog hangout in our neighborhood. They stop, sniff, sniff again, and sometimes go back for another session. In our hood this is the place to leave messages if you walk on four legs. What may seem like idol behavior to us is actually a high tech investigation for

our pooches. Our dogs use their sense of smell much more than their eyes to study the world, in contrast to people that depend mostly on vision. This is the reason dogs adapt to blindness so well, so much so that sometimes their owners are unaware they are even losing their sight. The canine sense of smell is hundreds of thousands times more sensitive than the human nose. There are 300 million sense receptors in their noses.

10 | Waves Magazine | October 2020 Issue

The portion of their brain dedicated to scent analysis, the olfactory cortex, is forty times larger than the same part of ours. The floppy ears of hounds funnel air directly towards their nostrils as they put their noses to the ground. Their long snouts and wet noses add to their ability to collect tiny scent particles for intense evaluation by the olfactory center. Their nostrils can work independently to determine the direction that smells come from. In fact, the right and left nostrils each have different

nerve pathways to the brain allowing simultaneous analysis of fresh and old odors. All this unique anatomy enables them to pick up remarkably diluted scents in parts per trillion. Our lowly noses can detect odors only in the parts per thousands. When dogs sniff each other, they are doing much more than saying hello. Within seconds they can determine their new friend’s gender, what he ate, whether he is ill, happy, or aggressive. With a little whiff two dogs that haven’t seen each other in a year will remem-

Humans have used the canine nose to perform lifesaving tasks for individuals and society for years. In the medical field dogs are routinely trained to detect low blood sugar in diabetics, seizures in epileptics and identification of some forms of cancer. Amazingly, specially trained dogs have learned how to smell minute amounts of peanuts hidden in foods. Alerting their allergic owner can prevent life-threatening anaphylactic reactions. And we are all aware of their civic sniffing duties of tracking lost children, bomb sniffing, drug detection and airport security. Compared to a dog, our sense of smell is like an old black and white TV up against an eighty-inch high def model, complete with surround sound. Checking out smells for a dog is big time

entertainment. On your next dog walk please be patient with your pal when he stops to sniff his favorite tree. He is ac actually having some serious fun. Pulling him away would be similar to someone turning off an exciting football game in the fourth quarter. With the help of that remarkable nose he is watching a week’s worth of Netflix, ESPN and reading the Wall Street Journal all at the same time.

Overhead Beach Bombs. Beach Time Etiquette

e enjoy the beach. Admiration for the sand, sea, sounds, wind, and sun is why we call ourselves locals. Tourism is an enormous chunk of Galveston’s economic nourishment that we welcome with open arms. But with tourist (and some locals), comes a few beach etiquette rookies.

One of the biggest beach day no-no’s is setting up shop too close to another groups “area”. On a busy weekend, sometimes you have no choice, and that’s ok. It is not ok, however, to feed the rest of your sandwich to the Seagulls near another group of beach-goers space.

Do we like folks attracting flocks of birds to our little section of the beach with the potential (it will happen) to cover us in poop?

NO! WE DON’T LIKE THAT! Let’s not feed the seagulls in close proximity of other folks on the beach. A big pile of warm, wet bird poop on your blanket, ice chest, or (gasp) on YOU will end your peaceful day with nauseating nastiness.

We are relaxing on a blanket, having a few brews, listening to the waves, and conversating with friends or family. Then suddenly, our tranquility becomes Alfred Hitchcock’s The Bird’s movie because the group next to us decides it would be cool to lure a Seagull in with food. This is not cool. Seagulls fly overhead. Seagulls poop below. Feed one and 20 more will inundate the area within minutes. See the problem? Seagulls are extremely intelligent, clever animals. More times than not, the gulls are not even eating the bread or chips you throw out for them. They are using the food to drop in the water as bait to attract a more carnivorous meal, fish, so they can swoop down and grab them. Much like tattering their feet on the sand to simulate rain so the worms will surface. Smart birds!

Have a Pet Peeve ? Contact us at www.WavesGalveston.com and tell us about it. We just may use yours next month!

MEET DR. TARA WEGRYN

Should I Ask For A Booster? BY: DR. TARA WEGRYN

M

any of you are now familiar with Hydrafacial’s patented approach to skin care which combines gentle suction, a rotary motion and a series of carefully formulated solutions to clean and refresh your face and decollete. The three basic steps of the Hydrafacial© are to cleanse and peel, to extract and hydrate, and lastly to fuse and protect. The first step is accomplished with a glucosamine containing solution and a gentle salicylic/glycolic acid peel that removes the rough top layers of your skin uncovering the fresher, healthier deeper layers. Step two which involves extraction and hydration, relies on gentle suction and a moisturizing solution containing exotic compounds such as willow bark to remove debris and nourish your skin. In the final step, your skin is saturated in antioxidants and peptides to create a healthy glow.

You can also tailor your Hydrafacial© treatment by adding serums that address your specific skin concerns. Lucky for us, Hydrafacial© has partnered with Dr. Obagi’s skin care line, ZO® Skin Health, and made available several serums that pair perfectly with the ZO® Skin Health correction line for home use in-between Hydrafacial© appointments. The Growth Factor serum minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles to restore skin health and vitality. It pairs beautifully with ZO® Growth Factor serum which is applied daily in-between treatments. Alternatively, if uneven skin tones are a concern, a Brightalive Booster serum can be applied to the skin to lighten the skin, reduce color variation and block the production of pigment. Paired with a ZO® daily skin brightener, you will definitely see sustained results.

All boosters and serums are applied after step two in the Hydrafacial© process when your skin is clean and the serums can be absorbed by your newly resurfaced skin. Additionally, in this unique time of COVID when many of us are wearing face masks or shields, adding Red or Blue LED light to the Hydrafacial© can kill bacteria, sooth irritated areas and reduce breakouts. Lastly, you don’t have to ask for any particular serum or treatment when you make your Hydrafacial© appointment. This is not a quiz! When you come in, we will discuss your goals, concerns, and options. I will make suggestions based on our conversation, and we will go from there.

Five years later, in 1883 Galveston Island had electricity and light bulbs. That was fast by any standards, once again showing how Galveston has always been on the cutting edge.

M

any of you have been asking how and when electrical power came to the island. So here is the answer plus a few more fun facts. It all started back in the 1800’s. The first electric lights were installed back in 1883. They have grown to be the beautiful and majestic lights you see today. The Festival of Lights uses over one million lights in its holiday display every year. Think for just a moment, all of the beautiful festival lights and the wonderful lights you see on the Pleasure Pier every night are powered by electricity that began two centuries ago! During the time that Galveston was in its infancy, Benjamin Franklin was busy discovering electricity. In June of 1752 he attached a metal key to the bottom of a dampened kite string and flew the kite in a storm-threatened sky. A succession of sparks jumping from the key to the back of his hand showed that lighting was electrical in nature. This discovery would soon lead to Galveston building the first power plant in Texas during the 1800’s.

Here is an interesting fun fact: Galveston has a city ordinance stating that fishing lights can be no taller than 20 feet at high tide. What is a fishing light? Well, according to those in the business these lights have the special ability to attract various kinds of fish. Who knew? Another fun fact: Galveston is where the first electric lights in Texas were installed. From that time till now the island shines brighter than ever. I hope you have enjoyed this month’s fun facts. Be sure to check out my discovery light bulb. It tells the whole story. See ya next month!

In 1856 Galveston was using gas lights. Then around 1878 Thomas

GET FASCINATED WITH YOUR FASCIA

M

ost people know their way around their hometown streets better than they know the map of their own body! Having an awareness of your body and how it moves, and functions is called signifi “proprioception.” One of the most significant causes of aches, pains, and degeneration is a lack of total body awareness or proprioception. Most people also don’t realize the enormous potential they have for healing the aches and pains that plague them daily. Becoming empowered to transform your painful areas starts with understanding the soft-tissue scaffolding that links EVERYTHING inside of you together called fascia. Your fascia has been with you since you were 50 cells old – it developed from your mesoderm, the middle of the three primary embryonic layers. The word fascia is Latin for band or bandage. Fascia is a band or sheet of connective tissue, primarily collagen, beneath the skin that attaches, stabilizes, encloses, and separates muscles and other internal organs. Fascia provides the lubricating barrier that prevents one muscle from catching on another muscle during muscle contraction. Picture an orange. The orange peel is like your skin; the soft white inner layer of the peel is the superficial fascia just under the skin; the membranes that wrap each section of the orange is like the deep fascia that surrounds the muscles; and each juicy cell is wrapped in more fascia, which is like the fascia surrounding individual muscle fibers. With such a big job to do, you can see why it is vital to make sure it stays healthy! How you ask do you keep your fascia

Having an awareness of your body and how it moves, and functions is called “proprioception.” healthy?! Why, through self-myofascial massage, of course! If there is a restriction or adhesion of a part of your fascia, the muscles cannot function properly, and neither can the joints to which that muscle attaches. Rolling or other self-massage techniques squeeze, knead, compress and pry loose muscle fibers and their associated fascial tissues. Rolling teases apart the sticky or adhered parts of the tissues, separating the individual fibers within a muscle so that each fiber can pull its own weight instead of its neighbor. Your muscles are then able to fully contract and release correctly. Rolling has so many benefits! It relieves aches and pains, it enhances your breathing function, it increases your mobility and energy level, it reduces stress, and on top of all that, it improves your posture and performance. Tools of the tissue trade include foam rollers, tennis balls, lacrosse balls, wooden massage rollers, and my personal favorite, Roll Model™ Therapy Balls from Tune Up Fitness. Anyone can find their soft and hard spots with these tools. If you are uncertain whether rolling is right for you, check with your physician. The best place to roll or perform self-myofascial massage is on a clean floor, wall, or chair. Using a yoga mat on a wood or tile floor will help cushion your body. Dim the lights and play soothing music for added effect. Rolling can be done daily. You can

get the benefits of rolling in as little as two minutes! But if you can carve out 15 to 20 minutes a day, you will most certainly feel the results in your body quickly. So now the cold, hard truth about rolling your fascia….discomfort, ok, downright pain. When you first begin rolling, you will probably have some very sensitive areas that make you yelp. This most likely is your body telling you just how bound up your fascia is and how much you need to be rolling! A good rule of thumb is if an area feels better after rolling, the discomfort was therapeutic and healthy. If, on the other hand, the area feels worse after rolling, there is bruising, or your muscles feel worse the next day, the tissue may not be healthy enough to withstand the rigors of self-massage and should be avoided. But if you can endure a little discomfort as you begin to open up your tight tissues, you will be rewarded with a feeling of warmth flooding into the worked area and a wonderful sense of relaxation, I promise! Your fascial tissue turns over approximately every two years. That means potentially two years from now you will have remodeled yourself from the inside out. You absolutely have the power to rid yourself of the daily aches and pains you feel from the knotted mess that is your under-cared for fascia. Grab some therapy balls and start your journey to erase pain while you increase your coordination and body sense!

R

ESTAURANT EVIEW by: Tom Valliere & Charlie Bresenhan

Highlighting Galveston’s Best of the Best Dining Experiences. As a founding member of the “Shareholder Alliance”, Buddy has testified before Congress about the significance of seafood protection. With his guidance and knowledge, the Gulf of Mexico now has a plentiful stock of fish for harvesting. In 2015, he and his family stared in the reality show “Big Fish Texas” on National Geographic. Viewers from around the world began to understand what it takes to run a successful fishery in today’s world.

alveston has long been a destination for seafood lovers. Surrounded by the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, and the brackish estuaries of Galveston bay, our local waters team with a variety of fresh seafood harvested daily for our consumption.

G

In 2019, Buddy, Katie, and brother Kenny opened Katie’s Seafood House restaurant on the waterfront on Pier 19 in the space formerly occupied by Joe’s Crabshack. Highly popular and wildly acclaimed, the opening of this restaurant was enthusiastically embraced by our local community and quickly caught on with our island visitors. A physically imposing structure overlooking the Port of Galveston, the restaurant’s beauty is more than matched by the quality of its food offerings. While many talk of “Sea to Table” concepts, Katie’s is the essence of it! With the advantage of sourcing much of his seafood with his own boats, and with restrictive sustainable fishing laws that require tagging of key species,

Commercial fishing has long been an important local industry. One of the best and most respected fishing operations is run by Buddy Guindon, his wife Katie, and his late brother Kenny. In 1998, they founded Katie’s Seafood Market on the historic Pier 19, home of our local “mosquito fleet” of commercial fishing vessels.

Buddy can actually trace the fish on your plate to the time and place it was caught and the boat and captain that brought it in. Now that is fresh! With so much seafood entering the global supply chain with dubious origins and much mislabeling, it is comforting to know you are getting exactly what you ordered.

Katie’s Seafood Market quickly became a favorite for local families wanting the freshest seafood. The market opens directly to the water and you can watch the local fisherman unload their catch. You can purchase whole fish, or they will clean and filet them as you watch and wait. Waiting with you are a flock of penguins eagerly awaiting their share of the leftovers. With tables groaning under the weight of local fish, shrimp, and melting ice, it is a pleasant diversion from the pre-packaged fish at your local supermarket. If you go early, you will see chefs from local restaurants examining the catch for their daily specials.

Almost every day the fresh fish specials will include Red Snapper, Grouper, Golden Tile Fish, Flounder, Oysters, Shrimp, and Blue Crabs. Don’t be disappointed if the fish you want is unavailable that day. The catch can be unpredictable, and you don’t want a thawed fish from a previously frozen catch. That is not the way it works here. Catching and processing their own fish also allows them to offer things you will not normally see. Items like “Snapper wings” and “Grouper cheeks” do not appear on most menus but are delicious and worth trying. Of course, our local waters are not home to many seafood varieties that you may enjoy. If you really must have tilapia, salmon, or some other non-native seafood, you may be disappointed as Katie’s serves only what they can provide fresh. Being on the water allows patrons to dine al fresca on their large patio overlooking the busy port of Galveston. You can watch the large cruise ships, freighters, and tankers enter and leave the port. You can also see the local fisherman return with their catch knowing that those

KATIE’S SEAFOOD HOUSE fish will be on a plate very soon. Many locals enjoy arriving by boat and parking dockside. Watching the sunset with a refreshing evening sea breeze while enjoying a fine wine or cocktail is a pleasure not to be missed. Entering the restaurant from their parking lot or the adjacent private lot that provides validated parking, you are welcomed by a friendly host that will accommodate your seating requests as available. This is a popular restaurant and can be crowded. During peak times, reservations are suggested but not required. A large dining room with an adjacent bar area welcomes you as you enter. The open kitchen dominates one side of the dining room and allows you to view your food being prepared in their spotless kitchen. The emphasis here is on quality and that culture is obvious in the efficient, professional service as well as the plating and presentation of their food. This is a festive, lively environment and it can get quite noisy. If that is a problem or you want a more intimate dinner, you can ask for a quiet table or patio seating. I personally enjoy the din as it represents people having a wonderful time enjoying their dinner and companions. And what a dinner it is! Their extensive menu is overwhelmingly seafood as expected, but there is something for everyone.

or simply broiled or boiled. Anyway you have them, they are the freshest and best available anywhere. Not forgetting our landlubbers, Katie’s offers a selection of non-seafood dishes including steaks, chicken, and of course, large juicy burgers. Daily lunch specials are a great way to enjoy their fresh seafood and reduced prices. They have a large lunch menu available Monday Friday from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Also, ask about their daily specials and happy hour specials that includes specialty drinks. For a truly unique experience that redefines the concept of “Sea to Table”, make Katie’s a must-visit during your island stay. Meet the locals that know the difference freshness makes. I guarantee you will return again and again as I do. Hours of Operation: Open daily - Monday through Sunday 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Reservations are suggested.

Starting with an appetizer is suggested. Select from an array of delicious offerings from the snapper wings, delicious shrimp cocktails and ceviche’s, or great crab cakes from our local blue crabs and more. For a soup starter, they offer a remarkable seafood chowder that I find amazing! For an entrée, you can select the type of fish you like and the method of preparation. You can select from your choice of Red Snapper, Yellow Edge Grouper, Golden Tile, or ask for their catch of the day offerings. Depending upon availability, this may include Vermilion Snapper, Swordfish, Ling, Mahi Mahi, Yellow Fin Tuna, and many more. Preparation methods include battered and deep-fried, Cajun-style blackened, Italian style - parmesan-crusted pan-seared with a garlic poached shrimp topping, and many more. Better yet just ask for the chef’s recommendation and your server will present details. An array of seafood platters, oysters, shrimp, and po’boy sandwiches are offered. Shrimp is a specialty and available in several styles

It was at this time in her life that she seriously considered studying art history and design. However, she went on to raise 4 wonderful children and worked for a living in various fields including interior design and fashion. She eventually moved to Galveston, TX where she pursued her dream of painting and began studying under the well-known and respected Galveston watercolorist Sallie Anderson. Christina gained valuable knowledge and developed her own style primarily in watercolor and then later in acrylics. Her art reflects a serene realism with a touch of humor. Her attention to detail is demonstrated in her paintings of dogs, cats, houses, flowers, and even portraits. Recently, she ventures out to surrealism and is attracted to a whimsical style that aims to make you smile.

i there, Wavers. Your Bum wants to thank you all for your very nice comments regarding my “Can You Guess the Chef” column. I knew that we have a whole bunch of readers that are big-time foodies.

I am also very aware that many of you are hardcore music aficionados. I know, aficionados is a pretty big word for your Bum to use. Anyway, I had an idea the other day while I was out riding around in my ol’ scarab. It’s not like me to have many thoughts in a day, but here is what had me thinking... Since you enjoyed so much trying to guess who the pictures of the chefs were, I thought you would like to see just how skilled you are at Identifying the pictures of some iconic musicians taken from when they were in junior high and high school. Your Bum has mixed things up some on you. I like for you to be as confused as I am most of the time. The only hint I will give you is that some of the pictures are of famous country music artists, and some are of legendary rockers. So, let’s see how many music artists you can identify. If you grade out a perfect paper and get all ten correct, message your Bum. I want to hear about it. It doesn’t hurt to brag every once in a while.

Water in the morning to avoid fungus. Fungus By using a fungicide on the plants, you will keep them healthy. Follow the directions on the bottle. Or - read our previous article on fungus in the gardens.

The most popular plant for fall decorating is the Mum. With the happy little faces in an array of colors, its easy to see why.

Feed The Plants As I mentioned, there are several plants competing for moisture and nutrients in the pot. By using a liquid fertilizer weekly, you will get more growth and more blooms.

Mums are easy to get- but not easy to keep looking beautiful. Here are four things you can do to keep your pretty plants looking their best. Consistent Water This can be tricky because the plants dry out so fast. One reason for this is because there may be as many as four plants in one pot. The nurseries will pot up multiple plants to get the pots full and big fast. So, one way to help with this is to put a

Dead Head The Plants Dead heading a plant is to remove the spent blossoms. Mums are no different than other blooming flowers. They are working to make seeds. To get more blooms, pinch or cut off the faded blooms. This will encourage new growth and more blooms. If you follow these tips, your mums can easily last October through November- maybe longer. Once the season is over, you can plant the mums in the garden. They are perennials.

PATRICK LEMIRE

M

y first use of trailer baits was in 1961. I don’t know where the idea came from; other fishermen, a magazine? If I was writing this piece and was 22 years old again, I’d know, but today, it’s facts forgotten- Whenever it was, the two ways used were simple. First was pieces of wooden broom handle cut to about 5 inches long, with a long screw eye in each of their squared-offends. They had about 6-8 inches of mono connected to a 1/4-ounce silver spoon or yellow bucktail dressed treble hook. That one worked well when specks were chasing shrimp, etc. to the surface. The other was a 1/4-ounce silver, Mr. ChampTM, hook removed, trailed by a yellow bucktail-dressed treble hook. This was a hot setup for me when fishing for flounder in the Galveston beachfront, working between the legs of the Pleasure Pier or parallel to those old wooden groins and bouncing it off the washouts’ bottom. The flounder would see the flash and puff of sand and then nail the following dressed treble. The point of this is that the trailer fishing method has been around a long time,

TRAILER BAITS GET ‘EM

long before ‘61. A topwater lure seems to work best when the back-treble hook is removed, and the trailer connection tied to the eye. With a heavier, sinking lure, this combo has the appearance of the smaller trailer following at a safe distance. The trailer’s freedom of movement, giving a natural look, comes partially from its relatively light weight—like a flag waving in the breeze—and we all know how good that looks. This all happens whether it’s behind a popper, sinking lure, etc. Poppers call in an assortment of predators from a distance with their surface commotion. Whether it’s a strip bait, glob of squid, whole squid, baitfish, lead head jig, etc., it has a good chance of getting bit. Naturally, wire comes into play when kingfish or wahoo are involved. A distance between the popper and trailer of 2 feet is a good one. Regardless of the connector links material, loop connections are important to give the trailer presentation maximum freedom of movement. Kingfish and wahoo really respond to a big Krocodil-

eTM spoon with a dressed hook trailing when virtually skipped across the surface. Sight fishing, surface casting, skyrocketing kingfish or wahoo are a hard to beat offshore combination. Strip baits, 1/2” x 2” x 6”, of bonito, bluefish, etc. are all strike attractors. Ling in particular seem to covet a big glob of squid. They also like crab, eel and big worm soft plastics. After floating back, let your presentation sit at about 100 ft., giving periodic rod tip twitches to activate the popper, etc. work it back a bit, let it drift out again. When fished from a rod holder “long” with the reel in gear, you have one of the best combinations working. The boat’s movement from wave action and a premier hook setter — the rod holder. At any time when the popper is at rest, the strip bait will sink a bit and respond to popper movement from rod tip twitches, making the bait strip rise erratically. Be especially careful when your trailer bait is at or very near the surface — A predator striking from below pushes a pressure wave ahead of it which may blow your hooked trailer out of the water. You can’t set a hook in a

blowup. You must feel the weight of the fish on the hook. Premature hook setting could have everything coming back at you. When fishing the mid-depths to the bottom, treble hook trailers may cause hang-up problems if structure is around. A much better choice is ‘T’ or circle hooks. When targeting reef fish at any depth, in Federal waters, and using natural bait, circle hooks are mandated by NMFS regulations.

The trailer can be a floater or “flotation added” as in a piece of styrofoam in a strip bait, keeping your strip bait etc. in view, up and away from bottom obstructions; lighter colored trailer baits are easier to spot. When casting any presentation with a trailer and bait combination, it’s important to slow your cast just before your lure and trailer are about to enter the water, straightening it all out away from you immediately before entry. As in most fishing situations, it’s the combination that counts. Surface lures or deep runners with a baited trailer will put fish on the boat, whether you’re fishing offshore, near shore, or in the bays — “Trailer Baits Get ‘Em”

ennifer Moore has created what she calls her “bohemian nest” within the walls of her newly opened Jennika’s, A Bazaar Place, at the corner of 27th and Market. An artist herself, Jennifer creates re-purposed and mixed media art pieces, jewelry, and other items for purchase. She also houses unique pieces from other artists she has met along the way. Among many of the beautiful and unusual brands and pieces, there is also leather and pearl jewelry from a Florida Artist along with mosaics and crosses from a Crosby, Texas artist. One project that has been near and dear to Jennifer ’s heart is her seasonal wine cork ornaments. Customers can donate to the Hopeful Hearts Ministry and then receive one of the ornaments. The Hopeful Hearts Ministry gives a voice to victims of abuse. The ministry is out of Kingwood, Texas, where Jennifer had her original shop before moving to Galveston.

“I offer a mix of items that make me happy. I’m a Junker at heart, and what was once just painting things over and over is now chic and beautiful,” said Jennifer. Jennifer sources all of the items for the shop herself. She also chose the location at 2628 Market Street after seeing area improvements such as new sidewalks and the refurbishing of buildings on the street. The idea of an area’s resurgence and the local feel of family and support among the merchants attracted her most. “It’s not work, but what I love to do,“she said. “Everyone here has been so welcoming and supportive.” Family connections make for the name of the shop, as well. “My Czech grandmother always called me Jennika,” as she spoke to the spelling difference in her name and the shop name. Her mother and grandmother were always creating things, and it has emerged in Jennifer as she creates a homey feel for customers, an eclectic décor in which to shop, and a home on the island going on two years now.

“We have the best food and cocktails right here. Coffee up the street, a salon next door, a new cigar bar, an exercise location, and soon an antique store coming to the block,” said Jennifer. Open Sunday 11-4, Tuesday 11-5, Wednesday and Thursday 11-6, Friday and Saturday 11-5 and online shopping around the clock via Instagram and Facebook for Jennika’s a Bazaar Place, Jennifer is eager to welcome customers with special events and later shopping hours when events come back to the downtown area.

The large selection of merchandise in Jennika’s includes clothing lines such as Gigio, Oddi, Nostalgia, Eesome, and Pol. The selection of beautiful clothing from bohemian to street chic to country fresh styles are highlighted by the accessories Jennifer carries, as well. The shop has been opened for over a month now and even in the times of COVID and hurricanes, Jennifer and Jennika’s has managed to offer quality merchandise at reasonable prices, as locals and tourists are finding their way to the newly updated area North of 25th street.

ohn Mortensen, one of the owners of Stuttgarden and Brewchachos, is our Featured Downtowner this month. Opening the original Stuttgarden in the famed spot for the Water Wall Burgers at 2110 Strand Street, was the first step in what became an even larger location with three floors of Biergarten, outdoor decks, restaurant tables and the largest selection of beer on tap on the island. Stuttgarden is a favorite stop for locals and tourists. Brewchachos was then opened in the water wall location on Strand Street. With its wall murals, outdoor shaded seating, and now the re-opening of the famous water wall, it has become another favorite for customers. The water wall is a one story wall with water streaming down the surface. The owners of Brewchachos knew they needed to bring back the beautiful water feature that adds a soothing sound, cooler temps, and memories of days past. Stuttgarden has also added new features to the building. They are now able to seat 80-100 people for private events in a sectioned area of the 2nd floor. One of only 2 shuffleboards downtown can also be found in Stuttgarden, along with their already famous Tuesday trivia nights, the renewal of steak night coming soon, and access to a huge patio on the 3rd floor where people can stay social distanced while enjoying views of the entire downtown and port area. Even with all of this, John has his other favorite places and experiences downtown. Here are just a few of the reasons he loves living and working in the downtown area of Galveston.

H

i everyone and happy October. This month, Oktoberfest in Germany, and Wurstfest in New Braunfels, TX, have both been canceled. It’s such a shame. All the music, fun, and food will be missed. But you can make your own fests with a few easy traditional recipes that they have to offer. Some of these are a sausage pita, potato soup, and sausage on a stick. I’m not going to add the turkey leg. Gag, in my opinion. Some love it though. So here are the recipes. Make your own fest at home!!!

Sausage with Sauerkraut in a Pita • • • • • • •

Ingredients Package of Bratwurst (it’s the white sausage) One jar of Claussen’s sauerkraut Pita bread (sliced in half) Half of an onion, diced finely Half of a bell pepper, diced finely (optional) Beer and water Mustard (simple yellow mustard will do, or if you like spicy mustard, then use that)

Directions Boil the Bratwurst in the Beer and water. Drain the sauerkraut and pour in a pan. Add the onions and bell pepper. Sautee. How to assemble Place your boiled Bratwurst in the pita pocket. Then add your mustard, and top off with your sauerkraut mixture. *Of course, this recipe can be doubled or tripled, depending on how many people you are having over for your fest.

Potato Soup Ingredients • Diced potatoes (use your judgement of how many people are coming when it comes to the amount) • 1 onion, chopped • Milk • Butter • Grated cheddar cheese • Bacon bits (optional) Directions Boil potatoes with the onions till tender. Drain off most of the water. Keep just enough water to cover the top of the potatoes. Pour in some milk, add butter and mash. If you like creamy soup, use a hand held blender and whip. Top with cheese and bacon bits.

Sausage on a Stick Ingredients • Sausage (I use Eckrich Beef sausage) • Wood skewers • Mustard Directions (This one is easy folks) Push the skewers into the sausage. Place on your grill and cook, turning them as they cook. Pull off the grill and pour on your mustard. Well, that’s it for this month. Put on some polka music, eat, drink, and dance the night away!!! Zicke, Zacke, Zicke, Zacke, Hoi, Hoi, Hoi. Prost!!!

RELATIONSHIP ADVICE | By: Jan and Dean

Rela t ionship Adv i ce Ad

with Jan & D e a n Hello Jan and Dean, I need some help and I want your opinions on my situation. My husband and I rent a house from my parents’ best friends. It’s a very nice house, in a beautiful neighborhood, and it’s close to our workplaces. On top of that, our rent is half of what it should be because of our landlords’ friendship with my parents. Sounds great, right? Well, they came over to our/their house the other day and put a large political sign in the front yard. Our problem is that my husband and I can’t stand this candidate! We don’t want this sign in the yard. It makes me want to vomit whenever I pull into the driveway. Plus, we don’t want people to think that we support this person. We want to take it down! I talked to my parents about it and they said that it is their friends house, and they can do what they want with it. It’s not like we can take it down, our landlord lives a couple of blocks away and drives by all the time. My husband says he is going to throw the sign in the garbage. I say we can live with it for a short period of time. What are your thoughts Jan and Dean? We have agreed to abide by your decision. - Sally, the sign hater

Not to mention, this could cause friction between your parents and their friends. You can take the chance and tell your landlords that you don’t want the sign in your yard, but if they are adamant about their candidate, you will be calling a moving company in the near future.

H

i Sally. Once again, Jan is nicer in her response than I am going to be. Your husband is getting ready to mess up a terrific situation you have with your landlord. You state that your rent is half of what it would be if you paid what the house is really worth in rent each month. Think about that for a minute. You are in a nice house in a beautiful neighborhood. My guess is it would cost you a minimum of $1,000 extra per month to live in a comparable house and neighborhood if you relocated. In other words, a minimum of $12,000 per year. Are you crazy? It’s October and the elections are in November. Your husband and you can withstand your “horrible pain” for 30 days. Of course, if you are just rolling in money and don’t care about the effect it will have on your parents’ relationship with their best friends, then go right ahead, be foolish, and discard the sign.

H

i Sally. I can understand your feelings about the sign if you do not like the candidate. It would make me sick too. However, it wouldn’t make me ill enough to throw away a good thing. You have a very good deal right now.

If your hubby wants to throw the sign out, is he willing and able to pay twice the amount you are paying currently to have something as nice and equal to what you have now? HAVE A QUESTION FOR JAN & DEAN? Go to wavesgalveston.com & ask away. You just might have your question answered next month.

Prisoners of Our Own Devices

D

e pending on the age of the reader, the title of this reflection will take on drastically different meanings. So, no matter what the age, enjoy the ride as we look at the possible meanings of “Prisoners of Your Our Own Devices” I’d like to start off with the readers who are over 50 yrs. old. If I were to ask the question, what are some of the things that makes you a prisoner of your own devices? The Islanders are probably thinking to themselves, Hmmmm, let me think back to the days of The Eagles song “Hotel California”, could it mean we were addicted to sex, drugs, and alcohol? Maybe I went too deep into my personal youth and dealings of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Maybe it was ego, money, and power? Oh, wait, too drastic, perhaps it could have been gossip, popularity, rebellious nature, or parental control (Breakfast Club). I’m sure there are many other vices that describe the nature in which we viewed life during our upbringing. Now, why are the younger readers scratching their heads, especially those under 30? They look at the title and know exactly what this reflection is all about. To be a prisoner of our own devices include the following: iPod, Cell phone, computer, iPad, gaming systems, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TicToc, and anything Google. See how different younger people interpret the things that affect their lives. It’s really no different than the older Islanders. Well, it’s very different, but for the sake of this Reflection, I wanted to show just how different the meaning of the wording has changed over time. To those of you who are between 40-60 years of age, you get the real picture. You can see exactly what I’m talking about because you have personal experiences and you’ve

68 | Waves Magazine | October 2020 Issue

lived it with and through your children. Now, you do realize that every vice the older generation grew up with still exists. You just pile on all the technology we have today. The concerning question: is the environment primed for a train wreck between the social, emotional, physical, and technological vices of today? Only time will tell. Ask an older Islander and they will probably say yes, the world is going to “hell in a hand basket”; while the younger generation is saying because of all the tools they have (technology), they will be able to save the planet and the older generation. Note: many of us older folks may not want to be saved! Lol! I guess the different generations will continue to be at odds with each other, only Father Time will tell. So, older Islanders, if you still have a record player or a cassette, pop in The Eagles “Hotel California” and reminisce. The younger generation can go to their iPhone and download any of the music apps, such as Pandora, Spotify, Apple Music, or Google Music Play, type in the title and within seconds you will hear the music of a generation that will challenge your thoughts, but also may give you a little insight to the “older generation,” where they’ve been, and what they stand for. Regardless, we will live together and who knows what the next generation’s “Prisoner of Their Own Devices” will be. I bet it will be more of the same, but different! Islanders are slow to accept change, while the younger generation is in constant change. I just hope we can survive each other. Until then, let’s just listen to the music in whatever way makes you happy.
