Welcome to Caswell County!

Caswell County is in the beautiful north-central region of the Piedmont region of North Carolina.

With relaxed, country living, and great outdoor recreation, as well as proximity to major metropolitan areas, Caswell County is uniquely positioned as a quiet community of choice in which to live.

The landscape is composed of hundreds of small farms in vegetable-produce production and various beef cattle and specialty grass fed operations dot the countryside. Tobacco, once the primary crop, has transitioned and the testing of hemp production is in the spotlight now.

Goat and free-range chicken ranges are commonplace, and the rolling fields of hay fill the landscape in the spring and fall each year.

The county is composed of beautiful rolling hills and streams filled with deer, rabbits, squirrels and wild turkeys. Outdoorsmen find the County to be the perfect place to hunt, fish and enjoy the quietness of these activities. Hyco Lake, situated on the border of Caswell and Person county on the east, provides 3,780-acre lake available for public water skiing, fishing and other water sports.

Home sites are available there as well as rental homes and camping at the Hyco Lake Park.

Farmer Lake in Yanceyville also provides fishing activities along with home lots in a picturesque setting. If golfing is on the agenda, Caswell Pines

Golf Club is a magnificently maintained course and one of the top ten public rated courses in the Piedmont of North Carolina.

Recreational programs, youth leagues for baseball, softball, football and basketball along with the Caswell parks and rec complex including a gym, baseball diamonds, tennis courts, a toddler lot and walking trail all contribute to the recreation experience of residents. An active arts council following, and a bustling senior citizen center also provide opportunities for citizens to connect and enjoy healthy lifestyles.

Caswell County is uniquely situated less than an hour from Greensboro, NC and an hour from Chapel Hill, the Research Triangle Park, and to the west, Winston Salem. On our northern border crossing into Virginia, Danville, Martinsville and Chatham, VA are all less than an hour away.

Excellent medical care is available at two community medical centers in the county with some of the nation’s finest hospitals, Duke Medical Center, UNC Medical Center and Wake Forest Baptist Health all around an hours’ drive.

Working together in a community is very rewarding work, but it is also challenging work. Whether a government entity, a town or county committee or commission, a non-government nonprofit or small businesses with owners in the community, each has its own goals and objectives that are its first priority.

Ideally, we all are working toward a similar goal of servicing our customers, constituents, clients or patrons and to be good and honorable representatives of the responsibilities we have been entrusted to in our individual roles. Working together for the greater good of the entire community while also accomplishing specific organizational goals takes work, hard work. It takes committed and often patient individuals working together to make it happen.

The more involvement there is from the citizens, the better these efforts can match what the citizens want and need. Although people do not always agree on everything, that’s ok. Differences of opinion help us to better understand each other while also seeing other possible alternatives. Continuing to work together regardless of these situations, is what is making the Caswell community stronger.

The community has received praise from groups outside of the area at both state and regional levels acknowledging that what our community leaders and members are doing is good, positive and benefiting all. Following is a recap of initiatives so you can learn more about how Caswell County has been leading the

way in key areas of collaboration, growing the community economy and just plain good old fashioned, working together, to get to a better place for all.

Community Caring Partnerships: COVID Partnership The Caswell Health Department, Caswell County, EMS, Health Collaborative, Caswell Family Medical Center, Piedmont Health along with many other community partners connected weekly during the first several months of COVID to share updates, assist one another and alert others of situations that needed to be addressed. Coordination of services, sharing hours of operation of essential businesses, information on farm worker situations, sharing testing site information, grant funding opportunities and more were all discussed regularly.

COVID Awareness Program Caswell Family Medical Center, Caswell County, and the Caswell Health Department partnered to develop and execute an awareness campaign for our county with signs and information packets. Signs were distributed to local businesses that completed a COVID safe checklist. The grant funding also allowed for television commercials featuring Caswell that aired on Piedmont area television stations.

Creating Well-Being for the Community Caswell County has engaged in a program (the only rural county in the state) to build county policies that are equitable for all community members through a national program called the Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE). Racial equity is realized when race can no longer be used to predict life outcomes, and outcomes for all groups are improved. The team includes county staff and community members and was supported by the county commissioners.

Feeding the Children and Others To feed the children when COVID hit, Caswell County Schools along with volunteers arranged for pick up meals and County Outreach Ministry also assisted in making sure no one went hungry. The Caswell Parish, Locust Hill UMC and Shade Grove UMC all assisted by opening their food panties and offered a hot meal service. Several businesses and funders also stepped up to sponsor hot meals and to help the efforts overall.

As the community rallies to support these organizations, hundreds continue to be fed regularly.

Caring for Senior Citizens - Caswell Senior Center Tirelessly continuing on during COVID times, this organization provides food for our county’s seniors needing assistance via Meals on Wheels. With the power of a volunteer force that is resolute in their dedication to this, our seniors continue to be served.

Caswell Veterans Having already served our community and nation to provide us the freedom for our way of life here in America, they continue to serve our community still.

These individuals have rallied our community to join together to plan and build the Caswell County Veterans Memorial that will be dedicated November 11, 2020.

Helping the Community Work Better Together Partnerships: Broadband for Caswell With the need of county wide broadband brought front and center with COVID, the pressure in getting the access needed here, especially for the children of Caswell has never been stronger. Receiving attention

from our legislative representatives in both Raleigh and Washington, DC, Caswell County government and community leaders have been working to leverage the current situation to push for changes faster.

The partnerships for broadband actually exist in all of the areas shared in the update as the citizens and organizations are all pushing together for more attention to this matter.

Caswell County Cooperative Extension Caswell County Extension has a complete team in place that has grown to provide our agriculture-based county more support. Caswell farmers have dedicated agents here to help; all is needed is for people to ask. Despite COVID, the group is very involved in the community partnering with the county, economic development, PCC, the Chamber, Caswell County Schools, and other groups.

Volunteer Fire Departments These groups have worked together to set higher standards for the county’s safety allowing Caswell residents to experience lower rates for insurance because of the hard work and partnership across the county in all fire districts meeting and exceeding set standards.

Nonprofits, Government/Municipalities & Small Businesses Children: Assisting the Children of Caswell County, the Caswell County Partnership for Children works closely with the area elementary schools and early educators as well as volunteer community members to build a solid foundation for the critical formative years of Caswell children.

Healthcare: Caswell Family Medical Center and Piedmont Health Services both have partnered with the Chamber of Commerce to provide discounted health care visits for employees of Chamber Member companies. This is not health insurance but does provide employees of Caswell County Chamber Members the opportunity to visit the medical center of their choice and receive quality health care at a reduced rate.

Towns of Yanceyville & Milton and the County Partnership Based on conversations with long time members in the community, the work these groups are doing together to better serve the citizens of the towns and the county have been moving more smoothly in the past few years than ever before. The evidence is showing

’ Discover Caswell 9 up in the projects and positive vibe among the community.

Digital/Online Presence Partnerships: Caswell County, The Towns of Yanceyville and Milton, Caswell Economic Development and the Caswell Chamber all partnered together developing a digital communications plan for the county. Because of the collaboration, a grant was awarded and new websites are being built for each of the groups that form the communications infrastructure that the county needs to begin to grow in various ways. As the websites are fully built out, an easy to use events calendar will be in place.

CaswellCares.com is another element of the digital infrastructure. It is a project of the Caswell County Medical Center that provides updated information on various programs and resources to all of the residents of Caswell. The community is invited to include their information here to share as well.

The Caswell County Chamber of Commerce partners with its member organizations as well as the community at large to include the county and towns of Yanceyville and Milton in sharing commerce opportunities and ways to market and grow the local business community both digitally and via traditional marketing means. Working as a partner on various county committees, the Health Collaborative, collaboration with other area nonprofits, and The Caswell Messenger, the Chamber strives to connect the commerce of area while also encouraging a positive outlook on all things Caswell.

Economic Development Project Partnerships CoSquare Shared Workspace Shared workspaces (coworking spaces) are workstations rented by remote employees, entrepreneurs, freelancers, gig workers, consultants, and anyone else who may not have a central office. With the new CoSquare space, our community is leading the way among rural areas in having the foresight to provide a facility like this for citizens. This project is the result of the county and the Town of Yanceyville working together with others in the community to make this a reality.

Center for Education and Agriculture Development (CEAD) The Piedmont Community College’s CEAD project location on Highway 29 in Caswell County recently erected a sign identifying coming project. This initiative is a product of several key groups in the county working together. PCC, Caswell County, Caswell Cooperative Extension, and others are contributing to make this happen. The ground has been cleared and this facility will position the county to support small farmers, not only as students at PCC, but as a way to grow their farming operations by offering a multi-use facility to assist with food hub distribution. The County has donated the land to the community college and planning has begun that should lead to groundbreaking in 2021.

The Caswell Chapter of the Health Collaborative (CCTHC) Partnerships A group of Caswell professionals from different sectors came together to address our county’s health challenges because the challenges faced in Caswell are too complex for any one organization to tackle alone.

Together the shared goals, strategies and actionable steps that are sustainable and can positively influence the health behaviors and outcomes of Caswell residents. County & town employees, representatives from area churches, Piedmont Community College, the Caswell County Chamber of Commerce and small business owners among others representing our diverse community are involved. Community members are invited to be a part of this. Following are several of the key areas where CCTCH is working: Healthy Eating • Food Insecurity Response Coordinator CCTHC, Caswell Parish, County Outreach Ministries, Locust Hill UMC, Shady Grove UMC, and the Caswell County Health Department, with support from Caswell Family Medical Center and The Community Foundation are hiring a Food Insecurity Response Coordinator to work with each of the food pantries and other local partners to expand sustainable access to food for community members experiencing food insecurity.

• Grocery Delivery Caswell Senior Services, Food Lion, PTRC’s Workforce Development Board, NextGen Youth Programs, and CCTHC are working together to create opportunities that provide valuable workforce training for Caswell residents ages 16-24 and a local grocery delivery

option for those residents 55 and older who may be high-risk for COVID-19 or face transportation barriers.

Healthy Spaces • Youth Opportunities Numerous youth serving agencies in Caswell, Rockingham, Alamance, and Danville have been a part of ongoing CCTHC conversations with local community members, faith-based organizations, and other civic groups to identify and promote ways the community can best support students, families, and educators during the upheaval created by the pandemic. In addition to working with local youth 12-19 to develop a Caswell Youth Council to guide the development and promotion of local youth programming, the group is working to connect interested partners with the support needed to develop tutoring programs and public WiFi access points. This work is done as part of the Health Department’s Community Health Improvement Plan.

Active Living • Trails The Caswell Chamber of Commerce, Piedmont Community College, Caswell County Planning Department, the Town of Yanceyville, Piedmont Legacy Trails, PTRC, CCTHC, and a number of local community members have been working to maintain and promote the existing trails in Yanceyville.

Access to Healthcare • Community Paramedic Program Caswell EMS, the Caswell Health Department, Caswell Family Medical Center, CCTHC, and the Community Health Worker Program of the Dan River Region have been working together to ensure the continued sustainability of EMS’s new Community Paramedic Program. Launched as part of the county’s COVID-19 response, this program works to decrease hospital readmissions and Emergency Room visits through home-based clinical assessments and interventions.

Working with other local providers and the Community Health Worker Program, this initiative ensures patients have access to ongoing primary care, behavioral healthcare, and social supports to prevent or remove barriers to good health.

Leadership and Capacity Building • Measuring Impact As the community embraces cross-sector collaborative efforts and building upon our existing assets, many Caswell County partners have chosen to mea-

sure long-term success and impact according to a Rural Wealth Building Community Capitals Framework.

This considers indicators aligned with the following pertinent capitals: Natural, Cultural, Social, Human, Political, Financial, and Built. They are working with The Health Collaborative, the Danville Regional Foundation, and other partners in the Dan River Region to explore the possibility of creating a regional data repository and dashboard similar to spokanetrends.org.

• Caswell Community Impact Projects CCTHC and its partners, with the support of the Blue Cross NC Foundation, recently teamed up with Middle Border Forward to award 10 Community Impact Awards of $1,000 each for community members to implement local projects that provided ways for community members to work together to improve the health and well-being of Caswell County.

As you can see, despite the COVID virus, the work to make Caswell County a great place to live, play and earn a living has continued forward with even more excitement building as key projects are in full motion.

It is a good time to be in Caswell and if we can continue our momentum and respect for each other as we continue to work together, move through the challenges and embrace upcoming opportunities, we can be sure to make Caswell a place where we will all be proud to have our children and grandchildren call home.

Caswell Farmers Market finishes up big year

Although battling (sometimes) brutal heat and frequent rain showers, the Caswell Farmers Market has just finished an excellent season with sales exceeding last year’s by $10,000.

A total of 2,650 shoppers came through the gates with an average of 139 per market day held every Thursday in Yanceyville next to Goodwill.

How Do We

Move Forward Jeannine Everidge Director, Caswell Senior Services

I remember the day well, March 17, 2020. It was a Monday and as always Caswell Senior Center was abuzz! All of a sudden we were telling our participants that this would be their last day in the senior center for a while. We were scrambling to figure out what we were going to do next. We have over 100 Meals on Wheels clients we have to continue feed. We weren’t going to be able to continue to deliver hot meals to them every day, so the question became “how do we move forward.”

COVID 19—The word and number we have all come to know all too well. For the senior center’s population of senior adults, who are the high risk, at risk group, it has been difficult. The majority of our Meals on Wheels clients live alone. They are already isolated most of the time, but with the virus they became isolated in a way they have never seen before. When delivering every day, we have eyes on them.

They have someone they see five days a week, something to look forward to. Now we are going to their homes only once a week with five days of frozen meals.

We all have several groups of our Meals on Wheels clients, those who were at the center all the time, and we call them 2/3 times a week just to check on them, most of all we just chat with them. We talk to them as long as they want to talk. We make sure they have everything they need. We have delivered face masks

to them, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, paper towels, water. Whatever they ask for we try to provide it for them.

The virus has also been difficult for those who came to the center every day or three times a week. Whatever the timeframe, it has ceased. For a lot of folks we were their home away from home. They would meet friends at the senior center. They would exercise, make baskets, take fitness classes, yoga and much more. With the center closed they have no where to go and be active. I have watched some these folks begin to have more health issues because they are unable to be as active as they were before the virus made its “debut” in Caswell County. It has been difficult for them to be isolated for such a long time.

As we continue to move forward, we are looking at things in a different light. How do we get them active again? We will have to plan activities outside. We will begin some activities such as bingo, fitness and yoga outside once we have gotten our plan of action completed. It will definitely be a challenge for staff and for the participants! All things can be a challenge; we just have to rise above and do what we need to do for those we serve. We have an obligation to our senior adults to do the best we can and provide them with some form of “normal” in a time when nothing is “the norm” anymore.

Local funeral home renovates and grows, offers cutting edge services

It has been a year now that Quenton Walton has taken ownership of Fulton Funeral Home which was started by John Wesley Fulton 66 years ago. He served the Caswell, Rockingham, Person and Alamance county communities for 65 years, always keeping his philosophy of “Service for All – Within Means of All” close to his heart.

Now, the funeral home is named Fulton-Walton Funeral Home & Cremation Services, LLC continuing Fulton’s philosophy along with the communities he served.

There have been many changes and upgrades as Walton looks for progressive ways to enhance services provided to his clients who entrust Fulton-Walton Funeral Home & Cremation Services with the final arrangements of their loved ones. The building has been totally renovated with new vehicles and computerized files. Live stream is offered as well as DVD slideshows, Memory Blankets, and a Dove release.

Last year when Fulton decided to retire, Walton was the natural choice to carry on his work. As his 25-year assistant, Walton shared at the time, “I learned how to treat everybody the same and everybody right. Not everybody has the means to do a lot of things and we still work with all the families, do the right thing and right by them. I also learned how to do everything exactly right because that’s what Mrs. Juanita S. Fulton always stressed. Doing things right.”

Walton added, “As far as embalming, he’s (Fulton) one of the best, and he’s shown me how to do it where I can make people look more natural, which is important because it helps put the family at ease. They look like they’re asleep and at rest and that makes the family feel good, which makes us as a team feel better.”

One of the ways Walton is making the business cutting edge is adding Elizabeth Rosario as a Spanish language interpreter to make clients more comfortable getting their arrangements and service taken care of in their native tongue.

Rosario, who is co-owner of Ely Har Farm, grew up in New York where her father had his children speaking and writing in Spanish even though they were here in America. Later when they moved to Puerto Rico, the kids reversed the process and wrote and spoke in English at home even though they were in a Spanish speaking culture. “It was the right thing to do because it made us bi-lingual which proved to be a great asset out in the world. I’ve been able to increase my income through the years because I could speak Spanish and serve as an interpreter for businesses. I also got to travel over much of the world with my business associates.”

As an interpreter, she stresses that it’s not just a matter of knowing how to speak Spanish. “I translate exactly what is said by Quenton or the client. I don’t put my feelings or

thoughts into the translation. It should be strictly literal as a professional interpreter.”

She gives the example of similar words being used in different cases. “The Spanish language in the Caribbean is different in some ways than the language in Mexico or South America. It’s possible to insult someone by not addressing them properly. For example, if you’re saying the word ‘you’ to a young person in a casual manner, you would use the Spanish word ‘tu.’ If you were speaking to an older person it may be more appropriate to use the word ‘usted’ rather than tu so you won’t offend them.”

Just as Juanita S. Fulton was a wonderful partner to her husband, Janette Harris-Walton is a tremendous asset to her husband and the business. She is a graduate of Bartlett Yancey Senior High School as well as having graduated college from East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology (Technical Sales and Services). She is also a licensed Life, Health, and Annuity’s Insurance Broker (Insurance Agent) whose mission is to help people in the various stages of their lives. Over time, she has acquired a broad array of experience to leverage her career and entrepreneurship as a global Technical Writer for regulated companies; where she writes effective document control procedures and developing employee training solutions set forth by the governing body that conforms to the compliance of quality assurance standards and/or of documentation style guidelines. This led to her vision of starting her own business called “Live 4 Life Matters, LLC,” which is a consulting company that intelligently embraces a client’s obstacles and turns those challenges into workable resolutions. Her business has also allowed her to assist the Funeral Home by: writing death notices, death announcements to execute for newspapers and/or radio announcement deadlines and gathering and coordinating information in order to write obituaries/programs for the families loved ones designated day of service, she explains.

She is the daughter of Eddie Joe & Virginia Sue Lea Harris (deceased). She started at Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC) during the summer of 2019 in the Funeral Studies Education program. In December 2020, she will graduate as a Funeral Director with plans to pursue her Embalming licensing afterwards. Since her studies at FTCC, she has been an honor student which led to her being elected to join and meet the requirements of the Fayetteville Technical Community College chapter as an executive leadership member of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS); “Building leaders who make a better world.” She enjoys working along with her husband assisting families during their time of need, also while completing her apprenticeship (NCBFS requirements) at Fulton-Walton Funeral Home.

She is a member of Freedom Temple Cathedral of Grace in Raleigh, North Carolina under the leadership of Bishop Gerald Sylver.

Fulton’s late wife, Juanita, helped him run the business for over half-a-decade.

“She was mostly public relations, which I’ve never been that good at,” Fulton said last year, laughing. “She was a schoolteacher and could speak well and had a great voice.

At that time, you didn’t print the obituary so she would read it during the service and was really good at reading and carrying on with people. She did everything except embalm the body.”

Walton chose to honor Mrs. Fulton by naming the renovated chapel after her.

“I have pretty much renovated most of the home. We want it as comfortable and attractive as possible to make the families feel at ease,” he says.

Although there have been many changes, one thing that hasn’t changed is the philosophy continued by the Waltons of providing ways of helping people who are financially challenged.

“When I came here and after dealing with people, I found out they didn’t have much in the ways of means so that’s how the philosophy came about,” Fulton said last year.

“We wanted to still give them some service, though. A lot of them were sharecroppers at the time and not everybody had money coming in at all times of the year. So, we allowed them to do the best they could with what they had.”

Walton worked alongside Fulton as a funeral director and embalmer for 25 years. Walton possesses licenses to embalm in North Carolina and Virginia, and according to Walton, “has the same passion for his work in servicing families and their loved ones,” as Fulton.

Quenton is the son of Carlton and Annie Adams Walton.

He is a native of Cascade Virginia and grew up around the funeral home industry in the Martinsville area. “My cousin, Ben Pritchett, owned a funeral home in Martinsville in the 1980s called Pritchett Funeral Home. He was an excellent embalmer and I was very impressed with the way he served the people with excellence. My dad worked with several funeral homes in that area; Hairston Funeral Home was one of them,” Walton shares.

He adds, “My parents, Carlton and Annie, are a great inspiration to me and I am grateful for their financial support to the business.”

Walton graduated from John Tyler College with a Mortuary Science Degree.

He came to Yanceyville in June of 1991 to serve his Funeral Director and embalming apprenticeship under John W. Fulton. “He is a great embalmer and Funeral director. Mrs. Fulton was a great teacher and a great inspiration to me.”

Walton also has a Virginia Funeral Director and embalming license as well as a Pre-Need insurance license; he is a Notary Public.

He is a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Cascade Virginia under the leadership of Pastor Fredrick Dion Noel.

COSQUARE – Connect, Collaborate, COWORK Cori Lindsay Caswell County Economic Development Director

The Caswell County’s coworking project began construction in December of 2019 and will be completed in September of 2020. The coworking space named CoSquare is a vision crafted from several visits to both large and small municipalities to see how they were encouraging collaboration among companies and emerging entrepreneurs. Coworking spaces are essentially shared workspaces. They offer affordable office space for those looking to escape the isolation of a home office, coffee shops or a long commute.

These shared workspaces offer many amenities such as private meeting rooms, kitchens, coffee, internet and more. CoSquare will offer up to 1 gig of internet service to its patrons through both wired and wireless connections. Occupants typically are freelancers, remote workers, entrepreneurs, start-ups and small teams who want to take advantage of a flexible space.

In addition to culture, cost is another big draw. One of the advantages of these spaces is the ability to rent out only what you need vs. an entire private office space, which can be costly. Through various membership based models, costs vary and allow for flexibility.

These include options for daily fees or monthly fees.

Membership costs also vary based on whether you use just the shared space or want a dedicated one, but will range from $50-over $1,000 a month. Measur.io, CoSquare’s anchor tenant, plans to move in as soon as the project is complete.

Funders for these types of projects usually require the developer to own the property before any type of discussions are held. They are also usually interested in determining the level of commitment of the developer by assessing how much they have contributed to the project upfront. Caswell County allocated $300,000 and the Town of Yanceyville allocated

$30,000.

CoSquare has raised approximately $1.2 million in non-county funding to assist with construction, renovation, and the operations of the facility. That equates to a 4 to 1 return on investment. County Manager Bryan Miller and Economic Developer Cori Lindsay have been diligent in assuring that tax payer dollars are maximized and made several presentations to various funders throughout the region that have agreed to take part in the development process.

Miller says, “We have really great partners in Caswell County that want to see the County be successful in their economic development efforts. They see this type of facility as being a great way to jump start and support a sustainable and environmentally friendly economic development small business ecosystem.”

CoSquare along with several other projects and initiatives like the Center for Educational and Agricultural Development (CEAD), and a refresh on the Town of Yanceyville, Town of Milton, the Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development, and Caswell County’s websites are exactly what was called for in the Caswell County Economic Development Strategic Plan developed by Lindsay.

The process was also a lengthy process due to the fact that she held multiple meetings with elected officials, councils, boards, and most importantly community members and then compiled the data using an independent economic development company, Creative EDC, to analyze and interpret the data. Lindsay says, “These processes take time to complete. Anyone can throw together a plan in a short amount of time, but making sure everyone’s voice is accounted for or that at least everyone has an opportunity to voice their viewpoints takes time. I want to make sure eco-

Beloved Milton Memories columnist retires at The Caswell Messenger

A semi-circular gravel driveway, a well-established weeping willow tree, a majestic magnolia, a manicured yard. A beautifully maintained southern house with a few rocking chairs and dog leashes hanging from hooks on the screened in wrap-around porch.

Definitely an idyllic setting on an 85 degree sunny afternoon. She says, “Come on in,” while holding the original screen door open with her left hand and holding onto her walker with her right one. As I enter through the side door, I hear her say, “Hi Karen! How are you? Come on in and have a seat in here.” That welcoming voice, a voice of true southern hospitality, came from our very own icon of Milton, Jean Scott. I followed her into the sitting room; greeted her dog, Lily; plugged in my recorder, and then sat down in a socially-distanced seat to begin the interview.

In the middle of the interview, though, Jean told me an interesting story about her husband, John, who was born in this house. She told me that when he was about two years old, he contracted the 2nd Year Disease (something similar to dysentery). Henrietta Jeffries, the locally in-demand mid-wife at the time, told his parents that she could help cure him of that disease. And, she set out to do just that. “Aunt Henrietta,” as she was lovingly called, packed her bag and moved in. For a period of four months, she lived with

the Scott family, feeding young John a diet of mostly sweet potatoes and crispy fatback meat. This restricted diet seemed to do the trick. John, the toddler, got better. He grew up and went on to live a full life. Meeting Jean, marrying her in 1945 when she was 20 years old, and raised four children in the house of his birth… the house in which Jean still lives.

Our conversation easily and seamlessly meandered between discussing how her father moved the family a few times between Colorado, where Jean was born, and Milton (her father had “itchy feet”), to remembering Milton as an idyllic place to grow up where she and her friends would play hop-scotch and jack rocks on the historic sidewalks to being a mail clerk for 10 years and then Post Master of the Milton Post Office for another 10 years.

But when our interview began, the first question I asked her was, “How did you get started with your writing career?” Jean replied, “I don’t have any background for writing. Other than school reports and papers that were required and that kind of thing. No creative writing obviously.” But, “in 2006, the editor of the Caswell Messenger called me and asked me to write a story about Milton. I really think she was expecting it to be one of those articles about the social events that were happening in Milton at the time.”

The editor wanted Scott to write about who was hosting the local bridge club and who was travelling where

and who was hosting visitors from out of town...basically to write about the local town gossip. “You know, things like that use to be in the Caswell Messenger.

I don’t have a writing style, but writing about things like that was not it. I told her (the editor) I would write up something to see how she liked it. And, the rest is history.” Scott went on to say that “my writing method has always been to sit down at the computer and see what comes. I don’t make notes. I just sit down and think about what I’m going to write today.” Jean also used her mother’s memories (journal) in which to draw information and inspiration. She told me that over the years, there’s been a lot of repetition in her articles, but was proud to say that one of her readers said, “I feel like you are talking to me.” And that was Jean’s goal; to write as if she were talking directly to each person who reads her column. When asked why are you choosing now to cease writing Milton Memories, Scott said that she’s been doing it for a long time, and that it’s time for someone else to take over and share their stories.

Back in 2014, a book of her writings entitled, MILTON MEMORIES by Jean Bradsher Scott, was released. It’s a compilation of some of her favorite mem-

’ Discover Caswell 21 ories of her beloved town. It’s available for sale at all three museums in Caswell County: The Thomas Day House/Union Tavern and the Renaissance Museum, both in Milton, and the Richmond-Miles History Museum in Yanceyville.

At the end of our hour long conversation, the final question I asked Jean was, “What is your most prized possession?” She immediately said that she didn’t have a most prized possession. She said that “If I could, I would take my arms, wrap it around the entire town of Milton and give it a great big hug. I just love Milton that much.”

So, as I prepared to leave, I graciously thanked her for her time, gathered my belongings, said goodbye to the dog and was going to exit from a different door from which I entered. Jean quickly said to me, “Unless you are superstitious, I wouldn’t go out of that door.” I didn’t question her about it. I simply backed up, walked the few extra steps to the door from which I entered and then exited her home. The superstition about exiting through the doorway from which one enters is now one of my Milton Memories that I (hopefully) will have the pleasure of telling someone in my golden years.

How a Hole in the Ground Built a Mountain of Activism How do you get a community to coalesce around an issue? How do you get neighbors to unite together? How do you get people to get out of the comfort of their homes and speak out publicly?

It’s simple, really. You threaten the comfort of their homes, their land, water and air, and the quality of their life. When that happens, people respond.

Last September the Prospect Hill community woke up to earth shattering news. Unbeknownst to them, a company from outside the County was working to put an enormous quarry mine in their backyard. Quarries are invasive major industrial operations. This one would eventually cover hundreds of acres. For decades, heavy, rock laden trucks would rumble up and down formerly quiet country roads. Blasting would shake the surrounding area and buildings. Dust would swirl around the site. Ground water risked being drained into the pits, threatening nearby wells. The location was adjacent to a drinking water reservoir, fed by streams that pass right through the mining operations.

A peaceful agricultural way of life was about to be shattered.

Worse, the NC Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) was considering issuing a permit for the mine and the public’s chance to comment was only 30 days away.

That sounds like an impossible situation, but the citizens of Prospect Hill rallied. Neighbors contacted neighbors.

Scores of residents showed up at an information session.

Email lists were compiled. Research was divvied up. In a few weeks, more than two hundred folks showed up at the DEQ hearing to speak about the problems with the mine’s application and its impact on their health and well being.

And thus started a long journey that continues to this day.

The fight to prevent a rural county from turning into an industrial park.

DEQ took notice of the opposition. It delayed the permit for six months while asking the company for more information. That paused the process, but didn’t solve the problem. The citizen coalition turned its energy on the Caswell Board of County Commissioners (BOCC). They needed better protection from polluting industries. Local laws can provide that. In December, the BOCC took the first step by passing a year long moratorium on any new industrial operations in the county. That would give time to figure out a longer term solution.

Meanwhile, more bad news struck. The mining company decided to add asphalt and concrete plants to the quarry and also to some land in Anderson. Suddenly, there were multiple problems to fight.

But again, the community rallied. Residents of Anderson joined with Prospect Hill to form a group they call Protect Caswell. It became part of the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League, a regional organization. Now the ad hoc efforts of community leaders could work in concert with

’ Discover Caswell 25 each other. The hundreds of concerned citizens advocated with the County and the state. They fought other permit applications on Air Quality and Wastewater, each time winning delays for more information. The work was relentless but people responded.

Unfortunately, as this article is being written in September, the County has yet to follow up on its moratorium. Citizens requested minimal agricultural and residential zoning which would keep out inappropriate uses. They also proposed adding a ban on polluting industries to the County’s Unified Development Ordinance. All those actions, which would stop these outsiders from upending Caswell County’s century old agricultural heritage, are mired in the bureaucratic process. After acting so quickly with a moratorium, the BOCC has ground to a halt in taking advantage of it. Hopefully, that will change.

Meanwhile, the work continues, and the citizens are still as engaged as always. Defending one’s home brings out the best in everyone. As the folks in this fight say, “It’s Not Too Late.” For our County’s sake, let’s hope so.

Many area veterans gathered to watch the footer being installed on the base of the Veterans Memorial monument being built in front of the Yanceyville Municipal Building on September 3. Many thanks go out to the committee that has worked tirelessly on fundraising this massive project. Thanks also to the many people who have donated to make this dream a reality. The memorial will be finished in time for the November 11 dedication ceremony on Veterans Day.

Non profit draws attention to suicide among veterans

Based out of Virginia International Raceway, Racing for Heroes (RFH) is a 501(c)3 that is driven to honor and support veterans and military service members across the nation. RFH was founded in 2009, by Chief Warrant Officer 3 Mike Evock, U.S. Army Special Forces (Ret.) to support his fellow warriors.

RFH’s programs develop camaraderie throughout the veteran racing community and helping recovering warriors with health and wellness supports to enhance long term outcomes.

This includes both physical and mental wellness.

September is Suicide Prevention Month and is also a primary area of focus for RFH is working toward countering the veteran suicide epidemic in the United States of America. According to national statistics, nearly 20 veterans kill themselves every day in the nation. RFH’s Executive Director, Brett Morash states, “I don’t know of anyone who hasn’t been affected by someone who committed suicide.” He continues, “It is stunning when it happens and is what drives me to get the word out.”

Morash believes communicating and engaging with your fellow warriors is critical to combatting this epidemic. Building a sense of belonging and community sets the conditions so that when someone is in need, they reach out to someone willing to listen.

The community of drivers in the RFH Universe runs the spectrum of racing. RFH embraces them all, from Champ Cars, Outlaws, Late Modified, and one car in NASCAR’s Xfinity Series. The latter is the Racing for Heroes #26 Toyota Supra owned by Sam Hunt Racing and driven by Colin Garrett, whose two brothers are currently serving in the Army.
