Aging Services Network of Oldham County

G

reetings! What a year we have seen! Since almost the start of 2020, we have had to navigate the waters of a global pandemic.

Our members were challenged with how to continue to provide care to our Seniors during this difficult time. Each member likely approached the challenge with a slightly different plan but with one common goal: to keep our Seniors safe and well while continuing to provide health and social services that supported their needs.

The way we conduct business has also changed! “Virtual” Zoom calls have replaced in person meetings. Masks and gloves replaced cheek kisses, hugs and handshakes. But we have met the challenge, and I am proud to be a part of such a remarkable group of community members who never ceased doing their jobs despite the uncertainty.

The Aging Services Network of Oldham County was formed to provide a networking opportunity for profes-

sionals in the field of aging, in Oldham and surrounding counties. We normally meet monthly to listen to speakers educate us on the various services available to us as providers to better address the needs of the Seniors we serve.

We also use our time together to network with each other to solve issues and learn. At this time we are “Zooming” but hope to be together again soon.

The Senior Resource Guide is a combined effort of ASNOOC and The Oldham Era. It contains helpful information and resources for those looking for assistance for themselves or for family members.

Most of the articles are written by members of ASNOOC

on a variety of topics that are current and vital to the care of seniors and support of families.

It is our hope that by reading this magazine, you will learn a little more about the services available to Seniors in and around Oldham County, and how to avail yourself of those services should you need them.

sking (or needing to tell) a loved one that they should not be living in their home or on their own is an extremely difficult thing to have to do! There are several reasons why someone may need to leave their home and move to assisted living.

One of the most common things we hear when talking to families about mom or dad needing assisted living, is they won’t leave their house. We will discuss a few reasons why moving to assisted living may be a necessary move.

SAFETY. Sometimes seniors become more confused as they age or develop dementia. Their safety becomes more of an issue. Has mom or dad been burning food on the stove or in the microwave? How do you know they are taking the correct dosage of medication? Even if they are using weekly pill boxes to keep track of prescriptions, what about

over the counter pain relievers? Are you finding mail that hasn’t been opened? Seniors generally want to stay in their home as long as they live but sometimes it’s not safe. They may have a hard time bathing and/or getting dressed because of arthritis.

How many times have they fallen in the past year? PHYSICAL. Look for a community fostering physical wellness through excellent health care, nutrition and exercise. Confirm that each resident receives a care plan tailored to individual needs, and that services such as physical, occupational and speech therapy are available onsite.

There should be ample access to state-of-the-art fitness equipment designed for older adults and daily group-led exercise programs.

The finest senior living communities offer healthful meals prepared from scratch by professional in-house chefs to meet residents’ dietary needs. Look for a variety of dining venues, from casual bistros to formal restaurants with gourmet cuisine.

EMOTIONAL. Emotional wellness means having a positive sense of self and feeling connected to others.

Consider senior living communities whose staff and environment encourage connectedness.

ENVIRONMENTAL. Our feeling of wellness is profoundly affected by our environment. Look for a beautifully designed community with welcoming indoor and outdoor spaces. Seek sophisticated accommodations with spacious private suites and a variety of floor plans to meet individual preferences.

The best-designed communities offer well-appointed public spaces such as meeting rooms, landscaped courtyards and raised planters for resident gardening.

Finding fun and engagement at the library

F

inding the Oldham County Public Library was a treasure when I moved to La Grange.

The lovely landscaping includes a trail in the woods. And the library itself has an area for every age and interest.

One on one tech help is available and has saved my sanity more than once. It’s also saved the inconvenience of a trip to the computer store.

Being a retiree and a “magazine-aholic”, I’m able to load up each month with my favorites. This not only saves me money, but I also don’t have to wonder what to do with them when I’m finished. Same goes for the many books I check out.

Trying new authors is an adventure, but may mean a quick return to the handy drive up drop box.

It’s encouraging to see toddlers and teens taking advantage of all the resources offered them.

What’s amazing is what is available for adults. I have met so many men and women with common interests at the adult programs.

Twice a month on Saturday mornings our Adult Writers’ Group has continued to meet on Zoom.

Most of us are wanna-be writers.

Some have been in the group several years, but new people are always welcomed. We are encouraged to share if willing, whether from a prompt or a manuscript. One young woman won kudos for just complet-

ing a book she’s worked on for eight years!

One of my favorite programs is Book Bingo. It’s not like any bingo you’ve ever played! Each month we become acquainted in a fun and clever way to authors and genres we had never considered reading before.

Then there’s the Mystery Book Club. It is popular and peppered with opinions. Seldom do we all agree on how much we like or even dislike a book, but the discussions are entertaining and enlightening.

By now, you can tell the library, the staff, and the people I’ve met at OCPL have enriched my life. I hope more people are open to the new experiences that hard work and professionalism have made available in your community.

don’t know about you, but I have felt like the Coronavirus is lurking around every corner, sitting at my dining room table, on the hands of a friend, in the sneeze of a stranger. Have you had similar feelings? Then we are not alone.

While thankfully the activity of buying and selling homes has been considered an “essential business”, that doesn’t mean that changes haven’t been required in order to keep everyone as safe as possible.

If you look at listings online, then the pictures are a helpful first step to decide if you want to see that house in person. It essentially is the “first showing”. But now, more

than ever, video tours are part of the listing process.

That way, you can literally “tour” the property from the safety and comfort of your couch.

Now, I don’t necessarily advise actually purchasing a property sight unseen (unless you are an investor and know what you are doing!), but it helps the buyer view FEWER houses in person,

reducing the likelihood of exposure. Using various online tools allows the buyer to narrow down the houses to only those they are sure they would consider purchasing.

Realtors are wearing masks and encouraging their buyers to do the same. Additionally, many homes have gloves and sanitizer available at the front door for potential buyers to use. This provides reassurance to the buyer that the seller is doing everything possible to keep the virus from being shared.

A seller’s challenge is slightly different, especially if the owner is still living in the home. If you are a seller, ask your Real Estate Agent not to allow

Residents also look forward to the gatherings around the dinner table with their friends. Our chef-prepared meals are often talked about by the residents. We often hear comments (pre-COVID) from visitors, “It smells so good in here!”

SOCIALIZATION. Socialization is another big concern. It’s easy for seniors to become isolated in their own home, especially ones that don’t drive anymore. Even if someone does drive, they can still feel lonely and even become depressed. At the BeeHive of Goshen, we are a small home with only 16 rooms, so our residents are not forgotten.

Several activities throughout the week are enjoyed, including weekly exercise classes. We have an exercise program at our home where residents are encouraged to exercise, participate in movement games and drink water between meals.

AFFORDABILITY. Another concern for many individuals concerned about a move to assisted living is affordability. Sometimes, people feel they cannot afford assisted living. There are, however, different options to help cover costs and we offer assistance in determining how

resources may be used. Sometimes people are afraid that when they move in somewhere, costs will go up (due to level of care increases) and then not be able to afford the home.

An example: Mom can put her own shoes on now but if in five months she needs help with her shoes, will costs rise for needing more services? BeeHive Homes of Goshen does not have level of care increases. All food, activities and provided care are included in one monthly price and will not increase as needs arise. When budgeting, it helps to know what the costs are going to be and what increases may occur. This is something else to ask

about when researching assisted living options.

In summary, although a loved one may be afraid or say that they are not going to assisted living, as difficult as it may be, you may have to take the responsibility to help explain that it is for their best interest.

With such important issues as safety, dietary concerns and/or lack of socialization becoming a major priority for their lives, assisted living may become a necessary move.

Rehab to home: Success after discharge

C

ongratulations! After spending time in skilled nursing and rehabilitation care, it is time to go home. A safe and successful transition to home depends on careful preparation. It is important to think about your needs before you return home and begin planning prior to discharge.

Here are some things to consider: • Understand that there will be an adjustment period. Things may not be as they were before your illness or injury, and that is okay. Your skilled nursing and rehabilitation team have been working with you toward a safe transition, but there will likely be more work to do as you adapt to being home again.

• Work with your therapy team in advance and plan for a home assessment if possible. A thorough home assessment allows you to return home with the therapists for an hour or so to go through your typical routine. This can reveal to you and your therapists the functional skills that still need to be addressed while you have time left in the nursing and

rehabilitation facility. This also allows time for any modifications to be made to the home to help improve success upon your return.

• Work with your nursing staff, social services department, and therapy team. Communicate your needs, ideas, concerns, and any questions you have about returning home.

• It is okay to ask for help! Know and understand your personalized plan for your return, such has who will be staying with you or how you will get in touch with others if you need help.

• Ensure you know your medications and how to take them.

• Make sure you understand any dietary changes that were made.

Know what to eat and when (for example some medications should be taken with food). If your food or liquid textures have been altered, make

• Be sure you understand and can safely follow your home exercise programs.

• Make sure you have a transportation plan for follow up appointments and outpatient therapy if needed, shopping, and outings.

• If you are going home with home health services be sure you have the name and contact information you need and that initial appointments have been set up before you leave.

• Ask about resources available in your community that will help you remain successful and as independent as possible. Services may be available to help with meal delivery, housekeeping, transpiration, companionship, and fitness programs.

Returning home after skilled nursing and rehab care is an exciting, but challenging time. Advanced planning and close collaboration with the facility and therapy team can make the transition easier. Preparing to return home by utilizing the comprehensive services available can improve your safety and success.
