W

e are so fortunate to live on a tropical island among the amazing creatures that inhabit our shores. They include dolphins, pelicans, spoonbills and sea turtles. Three different turtle species can be found in the gulf or in our bay systems: loggerheads, green sea turtles, and the endangered Kemp’s Ridley. Sea turtles species have been

swimming the world’s oceans since the times of the dinosaurs.

In the early 1980s the Kemp’s Ridley population had plummeted to a dire 700 individuals placing the species in danger of extinction. Thanks to a governmental program hatchlings collected on a beach in Mexico were transported to Galveston and put in the Head Start program. The baby turtles were raised to one year of age

in the National Marine Fisheries facility here in town. At one year of age they were released into Texas waters at an age they were safer from the marine predators that feed on the hatchlings. At one year of age the survival rate was much higher giving them a better chance to reach adulthood.

ley’s were released into the Gulf of Mexico. Fifteen years later some of the Head Start turtles started showing up on Texas beaches to lay their own eggs. Head Start females are still laying eggs on Texas beaches currently. Their babies are now old enough to lay their own eggs. As a result of this and other conservation efforts the danKemp’s Ridley is no longer in dan ger of extinction. In fact fisherman often see these turtles cruising around rigs and oil platforms miles off shore.

An ongoing turtle awareness program is very visible in our city.

There are over thirty beautiful turtle statues sponsored by local business and on public display.

They are part of a program, Turtles About Town, which raises sea turtle awareness and helps recruit volunteers for sea turtle patrols.

The patrols walk the local beaches during nesting season to look for signs of buried turtle eggs. When nests are found the eggs are removed and taken to Padre Island for protected incubation and safety from cars and foot traffic.

The “I Forgot Something” Person At The Check Out Line

S

ometimes going to the grocery store can be one of life’s least fun experiences.

First, there is finding a place to park in an often too full parking lot. Then, once inside the store, we now must search for a clean, sanitized shopping cart. A cart where hopefully all four wheels turn properly.

Once we have an operational shopping cart, the real fun begins. Where are the items we want to purchase located?

We navigate through crowded, narrow aisles, searching to locate the items we came to shop for. Without fail, the store is almost always out of at least one of the major items we came to purchase. Oh, it’s in the store somewhere, but it’s in the back storeroom. It just has not been restocked to the shelves.

It would seem like the stores would like to keep their shelves stocked. It’s hard to buy something that is in the back of their warehouse. Onward, we continue to shop, and we finally gather up the items we came to purchase.

Then, the nightmare really begins! It’s time to battle the check-out lines and find an open lane with a real, live, breathing cashier. And no, we aren’t going to self-checkout. If we wanted to check out our own groceries, we would fill out a store application, become an employee, and get paid for it.

Once we find an open line with a cashier, we pray that we won’t be stuck in line behind a high maintenance person with a hundred coupons, who insists on paying with a check they refuse to fill out until everything has been bagged.

You know the kind of person we are talking about, the “oh, I forgot something; I will be right back” person. They have a few items left in their cart to be checked out, and then, suddenly, they leave the line to go wander the aisles looking for their forgotten item.

These kinds of people should never be allowed in a store again! They leave us all just standing there, helpless to do anything about it, wasting our time, while they go on their desperate search for Flintstones’ cereal. They only care about themselves and no one else. They are oblivious to any other person on earth. It’s all about them. Common courtesy is not in their vocabulary.

Do we like it when some discourteous slug leaves the line in the middle of being checked out?

W E D ON ’ T L I K E TH A T! If you realize you have forgotten an item, continue to check out. Completely finish checking out, then move out of the line. Free up the cashier to service the rest of us. Then, and only then, go search for the item you forgot. Be respectful to others. Respect, quite a concept, huh?

Here comes our biggest PEEVE. The person who leaves their shopping cart right in the middle of them being checked out.

How the Face Ages and What You Can Do

a ny women tell me that they love being older. They love their families, their life’s experiences, and the knowledge they have gained through the years. Many women embrace their age, and few want to BE or look like young women. Most older women (like me) just want to look as good as they can, without large expense and, preferably, without surgery.

So, what are some of the ways the face changes with age? Structurally, fat redistributes in the face shifting the weight from the eyes, cheek bones and temples to the lower face. Secondly, wrinkles develop over time from contraction of facial muscles, and from degeneration of skin elements, made worse by sun exposure. Lastly, changes in cartilage and the tissues supporting them can lead to droopy earlobes.

While we all can continue to celebrate our age, below are a few things we can do, or have done, to give our face a more youthful appearance.

SUNPROTECTION. Protecting your face from the sun is the single best way to keep it youthful. Barrier, mineral based sunscreens that block both UVA and UVB rays will protect your skin best. Add a cute widebrimmed hat for extra protection if you wish!

CREAMS AND LOTIONS. Moisturizers soothe dry skin. Exfoliating creams improve the appearance of aging skin by removing dead skin, and Vitamin A derivatives such as Retinol, Retin-A and Avita reduce wrinkles and brown spots by inducing collagen production and altering the pigment, melanin.

BOTULINUM TOXIN INJECTIONS. These injections partially immobilize the muscles that form expressive lines so the skin smoothes out. Commonly injected areas include the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes.

DERMAL FILLERS. Dermal fillers are used to treat lines and hollows created by loss of collagen or fat. The two most common lines treated are the nasolabial folds between the nose and the corners of the mouth and the marionette lines which extend from the corners of the mouth to the chin. The hollows that are often filled are the cheeks and the temples. The most common fillers currently in use are composed of Hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring complex sugar.They typically last 6-18 months, sometimes longer after repeat injections.

LASER TREATMENTS. Lasers are used to resurface skin to eliminate wrinkles, scars and pigmentation. Ablative lasers remove the uppermost layers of skin and require several weeks of recovery time. Non-ablative lasers (ex. Radiofrequency) pass the energy through the outer layer of the skin to work at a deeper level in the dermis which stimulates inflammation and collagen formation.

Non-ablative treatments require minimal downtime and are usually performed in a series.

Dr. Tara Wegryn is a board-certified Neurologist and Electrophysiologist and a member in good standing with the IAPAM (International Association for Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine).

Dr. Wegryn received her MD from the University of Florida and residency in Neurology at the Cleveland Clinic.

o you wake up with body aches and pains? Does your body yelp with discomfort as soon as your feet hit the floor as you swing out of bed? Do you, like Tin Man, feel you need to put a drop of oil onto your joints to get them moving? Does your body hurt throughout the day when you move and even when you are sitting stationary?

Would you believe me if I told you that you have enormous potential to heal yourself and fix the issues that plague your tissues? Well, believe it!

Muscle aches and pains can often be attributed to overuse, underuse, or misuse of a particular part of the body. One very simple way to improve your pain and your body’s ability to heal itself is through stretching. You may think of stretching as something performed only by runners or gymnasts. But we all need to stretch to protect our mobility and independence.

Why Stretching Is Important Stretching keeps the muscles flexible, strong, and healthy, and we need that flexibility to maintain a range of motion in the joints.

Without it, the muscles shorten and become tight. Then, when you call on the muscles for activity, they are weak and unable to extend all the way. That puts you at risk for joint pain, strains, and muscle damage.

Regular stretching keeps muscles long, lean, and flexible.

- Hippocrates Where To Start With a body full of over 640 muscles, the idea of daily stretching may seem overwhelming. But you don’t have to stretch every muscle you have. Target the muscles that are important for mobility such as the muscles of your legs: your hamstrings on the back of your leg, quadriceps on the front of your thighs, your hip flexors in the pelvis, and your calves. Stretching your shoulders, neck, and lower back is also important. Aim for a program of daily stretches or at least three or four times per week. No fancy equipment is needed either! Grab a towel, necktie, or an $8.99 stretch strap from Marshall’s and choose a comfortable space on the floor. If you have chronic conditions such as Parkinson’s disease or arthritis, you’ll want to clear a new stretching regimen with your doctor before you start.

Proper Execution We used to believe that stretching was necessary to warm up the muscles and prepare them for activity. However, mounting research has shown that stretching the muscles before they’re warmed up can actually hurt them. All it takes to warm up the muscles before stretching is five to 10 minutes

of light activity, such as a quick walk. You can also stretch after an aerobic or weight-training workout.

Hold a stretch for 30 seconds. Don’t bounce, which can cause injury.

You’ll feel tension during a stretch, but you should not feel pain. If you ever have six minutes of uncommitted time, go do an internet search for “muscle spindle and Golgi tendon organ”. You’ll learn about these amazing little gems deep in your muscles that protect muscle tissue from stretching too far, too fast, and exerting too much tension!

The Cumulative Effect Of Stretching Stretching once today won’t magically give you perfect flexibility.

You’ll need to do it over time and remain committed to the process.

You didn’t get tight muscles overnight, so in turn, it will take weeks to months to get flexible. And you’ll have to continue working on it to maintain it. I know, one more thing to add to your day’s to-do list. But remember the quote back up there 625 words ago? Just like Dorothy and the Tin Man…you’ve always had the power, but you’ll need to take off your ruby slippers, get on the floor and start the natural healing within each one of us.

s we all know, Galveston has many wonderful and diverse restaurants. But what many might not know is there is an Association the restaurants can be a member of locally and nationally.

Please allow a somewhat formal introduction: Galveston Restaurant Association (GRA) is a chapter of the Texas Restaurant Association (TRA) which is a member of the National Restaurant Association.

GRA’s mission is to serve as an advocate and resource for any and all of the Galveston County hospitality and foodservice industry establishments. Our goals are to create an alliance, not only between our members, but also with our fellow hospitality and food establishments, to become more engaged in the community, to provide competitive rates for services for hospitality/food establishment operations, to bring awareness to the value of membership in TRA/GRA,

and to increase participation.

The current pandemic has affected the restaurant industry drastically. In 2019, the restaurant industry was one of Texas’ largest, employing about 1.3 million people, generating $70 billion in sales, and paying an estimated $4.6 billion in taxes.

Now, restaurants have lost nearly three times more jobs than any other industry, which for Texas means 700,000 jobs and $4.2 billion in revenue and growing. These losses will impact the entire Texas economy for years to come. The Galveston foodservice industry, bonded together as an alliance with community engagement, will weather this storm and will still be here once the state of our economy settles.

Fall and Winter are typically the time of year Galveston Island has fewer visitors, but that has changed. Our incredible festivals have helped bridge the slowdown and have kept the Island thriving year-round. This year is a different story.

A majority of these festivals have been canceled until next year out of safety concerns, which completely makes sense.

Our community still needs to draw visitors to our Island, but how can we do that without large gatherings?

While there are many answers, the one we are focusing on in September is one that is culinary and charity-driven.

GRA in partnership with Galveston Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) is hosting a Dine Out for Charity event September 21st through October 4th.

This event will feature 3 lunch items and 3 dinner items that automatically will include a charitable donation to be distributed to several local community groups.

The focus of the chosen charities is feeding, supporting, and health of the children and families of our community.

Highlighting Galveston’s Best of the Best Dining Experiences.

D

riving along 19th Street in downtown Galveston, you are suddenly startled by a riot of color. Starkly contrasted by the austere modernity of the adjacent ANICO tower, you have arrived at Huli Huli Hut restaurant. Decorated in large and outrageously colorful murals, this is like no other place in Galveston. Entering through a thatched sidewalk patio seating area, you are taken by the cavernous space, lavishly decorated in bright tropical murals and bamboo. Out of place in sophisticated contemporary Honolulu, you more likely have washed ashore on a remote Pacific island. Settle into one of the rustic oversized chairs and prepare yourself for a culinary adventure unlike any other in Galveston. The menu is as bold and colorful as everything is in this Polynesian outpost.

But more on that later.

Courtney and Adam Lee had a successful Bar and Grill in Ft Worth, Texas for nine years. Over that time, they had developed a reputation as a lively music venue. Having vacationed in Galveston over the years, they dreamed of someday expanding their business to Galveston and spending more time in our island community.

They had been scouting island opportunities for several months when the Huli Huli Hut suddenly came on the market. Caught by surprise in Ft Worth, they rushed to Galveston to investigate and were immediately captured by the restaurant and the opportunities it presented. On the verge of closing and with a dwindling clientele, they hastily came to an agreement and were soon in the driver’s seat.

Turning the restaurant around proved to be a challenging task and it soon became apparent that running two businesses hundreds of miles apart was not going to work. A choice had to be made. They chose to relocate and make Galveston their home and concentrate their efforts on their Huli Huli Hut restaurant. To the delight of us Galvestonians, their decision resulted in our gaining a wonderful food venue and some mighty fine new neighbors.

Word spreads quickly in our small community and soon business was thriving. What had seemed a large space suddenly became crowded. Always live music enthusiasts they were quickly finding the music was crowding the space needed for dining or vice-versa.

They tried expanding into an unheated and unfinished garage space at the rear of the building, but that was less than satisfactory. The solution came when the

Huli Huli Hut building was placed on the market. They were able to purchase their formerly leased building and expand into the adjacent space previously occupied by a brewpub. Finally, they had the room they needed to satisfy the needs of a large busy restaurant and a live music venue. The purchase and expansion also allowed them better handicapped accessibility as a side benefit.

A lively and diverse menu intersperses island tropical-themed entrees with more traditional fare. They have made quite a name for themselves for their legendary crawfish and crab boils. So popular have they become, they scour the globe for a continuous supply of the tasty crustaceans and are now able to offer live crawfish year-round. Recently, they have moved significantly upscale offering lobster dinners and lobster seafood combination platters at incredibly low prices. Their more traditional fare runs the gamut from artisan hamburgers to incredible fish and chips and everything in between.

Of course, a business is more than a building. It is about people. Owner Cortney says it could not have happened without the dedication and talents of their chef. Chef Jorge Tzalam has worked for three years at Huli Huli. Before that, he spent four years at Joe’s Crabshack, six years at Fisherman’s Wharf, and two at Olympia Grill. According to Cortney: “Definitely the backbone of our restaurant. He is like family! There is not a chef on the island that cares

as much or works harder than Jorge! He’s one of a kind....”

Put this restaurant on your must-visit list. One meal and you will certainly agree Chef Jorge is tops!

Dog-friendly patio seating is available, a small parking lot is behind the restaurant. The large parking lot next door is free after 5:00 PM. Street Parking is also available. Handicapped accessibility is good for the historic district. COVID protocol is very good.

But who is Johnny Smecca? This month our spotlight falls upon this remarkable man and his many contributions to our community. Here, in his own words, is his story.

O

n ce a major port of entry for immigrants from Europe, Galveston’s restaurant business has long been heavily influenced by Italian immigrants.

The list of restaurants and families in the food business is long and many of the names are familiar to island residents and visitors. Gaido, DiBella, Maceo, Pucetti, are just a few of the many families that have

fed generations of Galvestonians over the years. While many of those families endure, today no one has a greater presence in Galveston than the Smecca family and their Galveston Restaurant Group.

As president of the Galveston Restaurant Group, Johnny, his brother Joey, and partner Danny Hart oversee a business composed of eight restaurants and a thriving catering business. Formed in 1998,

“I am the second son of an Italian immigrant family. I was born in Paterson, New Jersey. My family moved to Galveston in 1973. My dad had enough of the snow and wanted sunshine. Galveston is very similar to his hometown of Gela, Sicily, a beautiful coastal town in southern Sicily.

I attended Catholic schools and served mass every week as an altar boy. I was chosen by the Cardinal to serve Christmas midnight mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral.

It was a huge honor and was covered by ABC 13, my first time to be on television.

I grew up working every day in the family restaurant. I slept on bags of flour or rows of chairs waiting for my parents to close many nights. I spent all of my time outside of school in the business.

I learned every aspect from scrubbing floors, cleaning toilets, flying pizzas, and making bank deposits at the age of ten. I consider the time spent with my mom, dad, and brother, priceless!”

We have been through hurricanes, floods, and fires, but COVID has been one of the most stressful times in my life.

We are extremely fortunate to have a great group of employees, managers, and general managers that have a passion for what we do. We have employees that have been by our side since 1975.

Ambitious from a young age, Johnny got his first bike at age 13 and started a side business buying, selling, and fixing skateboards for his friends in the neighborhood. A good student, Johnny graduated from O’Connell High School in 1982 and went on to earn a degree from the University of Texas in 1987. Upon graduation, he returned home to the family restaurant business in Galveston.

Always active in community service, he immediately joined a community service group and began a long dedication of service to his community and church.

“My community service is not by accident. There was a defining moment in my life when I was 13 that made an impression on me I will never forget. I promised my mom two things at that moment.

If I ever had success, I would #1, Help our church, and #2, I would help those that need it. I continue to this day fulfilling my promise to my mom.”

Johnny has fulfilled that promise many times over, most recently supporting unemployed service workers and recognition of our first responders by providing thousands of free meals and food packages during this COVID-19 crisis. Johnny currently serves as a school board trustee for Galveston. His accomplishments in that role are numerous and his dedication is absolute. He is up for re-election in November and looks forward to serving a second term.

Following in the footsteps of their father, the boys continue the tradition of community service. Nicholas was recently cited in this magazine for his efforts in the Kemp’s Ridley Green Team effort that resulted in the passage of a bill making the Kemp’s Ridley the official State of Texas Turtle contributing to the efforts to protect this important species.

When asked about the current difficulties and his plans going forward, Johnny, ever the eternal optimist, sees the future in his words...

It has gotten harder over the last five years. Our local taxes and insurance have skyrocketed. Our profit margins have shrunk. There are more ways to lose money today in the hospitality business than to make it. I predict gambling will happen sooner than anyone thinks in Texas and Galveston.

“GRG (Galveston Restaurant Group) was created in 1998. Our first concept was the Saltwater Grill on Post Office. We then bought into Yagas in 2000 and owned it until 2009. We operate 8 restaurants and a catering business. We had as many as 300 employees before the current COVID issue. We have been through hurricanes, floods, and fires, but COVID has been one of the most stressful times in my life. AS PANDEMIC CHALLENGES CONTINUE, CUISINE DIVERSITY IMPROVES IN LOCAL RESTAURANTS

T

he summer season is winding down.

Our local restaurants have managed to survive in the face of unprecedented adversity. As Johnny Smecca, the president of the Galveston Restaurant Group, states in this month’s Spotlight article, this COVID -19 virus has been a bigger challenge than even hurricane Ike in 2008.

Our restaurants and bars took extraordinary actions to stay afloat and continue to serve the community. Constantly changing rules and regulations required them to be nimble and adapt to new conditions on a moment’s notice.

Especially hard hit have been those businesses operating under a TABC license that have less than 50% food sales. They were only allowed to reopen under more stringent occupancy rules than those operating as restaurants with 51% food sales.

Ultimately, they were required to close completely. There was -and is- a relative unfairness in these rules and some businesses were able to obtain new licenses as restaurants while others added kitchens or affixed food trucks so as to qualify under the 51% rule.

This has had the effect of actually improving the diversity and number of food outlets on the island.

The actual number of closures has been very small. Two family owned Mexican restaurants have closed with one being replaced by a new owner for a net loss of one. The addition of two new Chinese food restaurants and the reopening of two that previously closed have brought new choices in that under-served sector. The fall season is going to be a major challenge as most large events have been canceled.

Now more than ever we need to support our locally owned restaurants. They are our friends and neighbors.

Pho 20 2101 Broadway | 409-750-9200 Pho 20, This upscale Vietnamese restaurant on Broadway has reopened their dining room and is now offering sit in dining.

My personal favorite, they have some of the best Chinese dishes interspersed with their Vietnamese offerings.

Panda Express Construction has started on the local outlet of this national chain of Chinese food.

Watch for their opening on the corner of S and 61st near the Odyssey Academy.

Temporarily closed due to COVID, this Japanese Asian fusion restaurant on Post Office has reopened. A part of the Galveston Restaurant Group, we welcome the return of our favorite sushi restaurant.

Located in the West end at Sea Isle, this park like setting of food trucks and picnic tables and umbrellas has opened to enthusiastic crowds. A mix of permanent food trucks and rotating transients keep things interesting. The permanent offerings include freshly flown in New England lobster and homemade chowders, delicious Louisiana inspired Cajun and Creole dishes and American Fare including breakfast.

Clear Creek at the Bayou is a tremendous opportunity for CCCT and will propel our all-volunteer organization into a whole new era as we continue to present quality theatrical productions for the education, cultural growth, and entertainment of the community.

The Bayou is a modern, professional theatre.

With its large stage, 400 seat auditorium and state-of-the-art tech systems, CCCT will be afforded the opportunity to present productions on a greater scale and at higher quality than ever before. We expect this relationship to grow CCCT while creating an even greater bond between UHCL and the Bay Area community. In addition to our new venue, we have established a scene shop and rehearsal space on Nassau Bay Drive. This will serve as CCCT’s center of operations and will maintain a presence in the community that has been our home for many years.

But, with apologies to the great poet Robert Burns, the best laid schemes of mice and men..., did not account for a worldwide pandemic. COVID19 is having a devastating impact on performing arts organizations nationwide. With social distancing measures in place, live concerts, theater, and dance performances have been canceled or postponed. In our 56-year history, this is undoubtedly, the greatest challenge that Clear Creek Community Theatre has ever faced.

The question before our membership and board, is how to best move forward during this time of great uncertainty. Our directors and actors have been busy rehearsing and preparing new productions. But for now, those plays are on hold until our public health officials and the University feel it is safe to offer “socially distanced” performances to the public.

We are also exploring live streaming performances. While we would love nothing more than to gather our actors and patrons together in the same space, we are developing professionally produced productions to stream live to our virtual theater in your home.

For the moment, our number one concern is the health and safety of our audiences, our casts, and crews.

s I write this, Marco is currently making landfall as a tropical storm. Lara, hurricane number two, is still churning way in the gulf making everyone guess as to where she will make landfall.

If one of these doesn’t get rain on your parade, it is just a matter of time before another one does since we live on the Gulf coast.

All things considered, I thought an article on how to clean up your gardens after a hurricane or tropical storm might be appropriate.

Wind Damage Plants that have been stripped of leaves by high winds will sprout new leaves within two weeks or so. However, do wait 3-6 months on perennials before you pull them out. Many will comeback if given time for roots to replenish.

For broken limbs- prune the broken and damaged.

Make a clean cut with sharp pruning shears at the base of the broken limb where it meets the larger limb or trunk. This is important because clean cuts heal over and prevent bacteria and disease from entering the plant or tree. A broken limb is hard for a tree to heal and leaves the plant vulnerable.

Salt Water The rain in a hurricane dilutes the salt water from the ocean to concentrations that plants can tolerate. In the case of storm surge where the ocean is now in your front yard, flushing the soil with fresh water can help. This is a good reason for planting salt tolerant plants if you live in areas where a storm surge is possible.

Fertilizer Normally, you don’t use a lot of fertilizer heading into fall, but a light dose will help the plants bounce back.

Given how mild our climate is in the winter, we still have a long growing season left.

cotch-Brite@ Magic - It’s not really about a magic pad, but the results of using one to create a crosshatch pattern on monofilament’s surface is sort of magical. I came up with this mono crosshatch idea about twelve years ago and have been using it ever since. My idea was generated after I saw an underwater photo of a hooked ling on a mono leader, taken a foot or so below the surface — the mono leader was shining in the reflected, magnified sunlight as if it were chrome. While that was extreme, it did bring out the apparent fact that, even though a mono leader might be clear, its smooth surface greatly contributed to it being a sunlight reflector. The most common viewing of this “chrome mono” look is when the sunlight is coming from above to almost directly behind a mono strand and into the water.

The next time you are on a pier, beach or in a boat, look for this extreme reflected sunlight — “chrome mono.” Diffusing the reflected shine of your mono line/ leader may turn a wary adult of just about any species from a “looker” into an “eater”, especially when fishing for any near surface species. This also applies to inshore and bay fishing.

Think about how many times this has probably happened in the past. Killing the reflection on a mono main line for about 5-6 feet above a wire leader helps too,

especially when a short leader of around twelve inches is used.

The idea of a crosshatch pattern on the mono’s surface greatly reducing the reflection was a good one; how to get it there was the next problem. Somewhere in the thought process of solving the reflection problem, I came up with using fine grit wet/dry sandpaper. This sort of worked, but still was not what I was looking for. When looking at a scouring pad the “light bulb came on.” After trying several brands and types of pads, I settled on the dark green ones by 3-MTM, named Scotchbrite@.

They had the flexibility, softness and texture that gave the best and most consistent crosshatch pattern on a mono strand’s surface. The last time I bought any of these Scotch-brite@ pads was at Sam’s, a “Value Pack” of 18.

When each pad was cut into four equal pieces, this gave me a total of 72, measuring about 4-1/2” x 3” x 1/4”.

The mono surface crosshatching process goes like this: Hold one end of the mono section to be modified in your left hand; with the folded Scotch-brite@ pad with the mono held snugly in it in your right hand, that’s up against your left hand. Now, with a back and forth wrist rolling motion of about one second each, pull the mono slowly thru the Scotch-

brite@ pad at about 6” per second with your right hand. See the illustration. When you get to the distance along the mono to be crosshatched, stop and reverse the process until you reach the original starting point. One time up, one time down the mono and you have put a crosshatch pattern on the mono surface.

Breaking up the mono’s reflective surface must be done with a crosshatch pattern, just pulling a mono strand straight through a Scotch-brite@ pad will only put those minute scratches in a straight line, the reflected shine will still be a problem, in fact, intensified. The random crosshatch pattern definitely diffuses the reflected light.

To see the effect of this crosshatching, using great care, fill a clear glass container with clear water, put it in a position so that direct sunlight is coming through from the side away from you.

Put a loop of crosshatched mono and a loop from the same spool without the treatment into the jar’s water. The mono loop with the crosshatch pattern will almost disappear, versus the unaltered piece. You will have no question as to the effectiveness of the crosshatching, the benefit of this crosshatching is that it’s headed in the direction of having stealth performance as with fluorocarbon. You retain the flexibility and knot strength of mono, while

the leader or cut the cloudy portion off. All the reels I use offshore have Spectra@ on them and about fifteen feet of 80# mono leader knotted on. I only do the Scotch-brite@ treatment to the outer 5-6 feet and cut the leader back as needed as the fishing goes on. I haven’t done a break test of before and after the crosshatching, but I have fished it all these years without any problems other than the occasional cloudiness on the surface.

Other fluorocarbon problem areas eliminated are the reported questionable knot strength and stiffness of some, plus its higher cost. At about six dollars for that pack of Scotchbrite@pads, plus a little time and effort, this crosshatching looks like and is a definite fishing tackle bargain.

Does this crosshatching weaken the mono? Infinitesimally is the word that comes to mind when I’m asked that question. The one effect that is a minus will come into view after it’s fished a day or two; the disturbed surface might turn a bit cloudy. Change

The reflection reducing, stealth effect of crosshatching is of greatest benefit from near the surface to about 8-10 ft. down in clear water, when viewed from near horizontal. This effect also comes into play at night around a brightly lit production platform far offshore — think tuna fishing.

This is another of those instances where adapting a product to a non-related use results in a tried and proven true new technique — you never know where you will make your next fishing tackle find. Using a Scotch-brite@ scouring pad to create a low-cost monofilament alternative to fluorocarbon while keeping mono’s basic characteristic — it’s Scotch-brite@ Magic!

Bringing “Hope”, and Remembering Hope

T

he emotions of knowing a child’s life depends on the mother’s every step across the field of destruction and debris, such as that from the historical Galveston hurricane of 1900, which still stands as the worst natural disaster on U.S. soil, is the image that caught Doug McLean’s eye. He had the opportunity to view the only two photos in existence of the original 1904 Pompeo Coppini plaster sculpture, titled “Victims of Galveston”.

The emotionally significant sculpture was that of a mother holding a lifeless baby in her arms, as she had a young girl clinging to her waist and a field of iron, rock, bricks, and debris under her bare feet. The photos only showed the front and side view of the sculpture, but it was the face of the mother that made Doug want to bring her emotions back to life.

“Her face and the emotions. That was it for me. The composition and the sculpting told me what to do from there”, said Doug, as he spoke of his interpretation of the Coppini sculpture. Doug did not see the sculpture as a representation of victims, but rather hope and that is the title of his sculpture, “Hope”.

“More than anything, this is a tribute to strong women and their con-

tribution to rebuilding after storms, our local government, local education, structures and philanthropy on the island”, said Doug.

Doug. “I also know the feeling of being in your mother’s arms. When my mom would hug me, it was just a different, deeper feeling.”

With this new way of looking at Coppini’s sculpture, which was never used because of empathizing with community, after the 1900 storm, and a feeling that it might be too soon for that visual, Doug felt the 120th anniversary of the disaster could be the time for this beautiful work of art to be brought back.

This attention to detail and realism will bring this piece to life for the island and serve as the ideal tribute to the survivors and lives that were lost, on the anniversary of the storm, 120 years ago. The City Park is slated for completion by the end of 2020 and will be located between City Hall and the new Island Fire Station. “Hope” will be lovingly displayed in the center of an area banked with small trees. The molded plasticine that Doug has created will be molded then poured as a bronze sculpture at a foundry in Smithville, Texas.

The sculpture became a piece of history that disappeared from the storage facility where it had been kept. Therefore, he only had the two photos to work from. Doug McLean found his passion for figurative sculpture work, again, when working on a commission for J.P. Bryan, founder of Bryan Museum and avid collector of Western art and artifacts. Bryan was in possession of one of the only photos of the original sculpture by Coppinni.

Doug, with a degree in Art, emphasis on sculpture, 9 years of teaching at the Museum of Fine Arts art school, The Glassell Studio School, years of commission work and a solid reputation for already restoring many buildings in Galveston, became the driving force for bringing new hope to the island through his interpretation, “Hope”. When completed, it will be displayed in the new city park at 823 Rosenberg.

He started with the bust of the mother to ensure he was perfecting her strength, determination, and hope.

He then went on to create his interpretation of the entire piece of art. Having lived on the island, himself for 40 years, he has experience with the energy behind the winds, the waves and the destruction that can be left behind. Geared with that knowledge and the love of his own mother and how her displays of caring and love can affect him in different ways than any other, he was able to also complete the back side of the sculpture with realistic folds and creases in the clothes, strong movements shown in the feet as they cling to the rocks and even the look on the baby’s face that needed to be different for him.

Doug is known for contributing countless hours to restoring Galveston’s history, from his time as a blacksmith on the 1877 Tall Ship Elissa to his restoration projects on the various cast iron facades across the island.

Now, with over 1,500 hours of work, and a detail perfected every time he walks past his creation, “Hope” will be completed and ready for the next steps of the process very soon, but monetary donations are still needed to bring this tribute to fruition.

Her talent is boundless and brings the island visitors and locals, music, art, and large installations to enjoy and admire. With different approaches to enjoying the downtown area during quarantine and social distancing, she has managed to bring smiles via social media when doing live music sessions or creating her artwork. Now, that she can venture out more again, she has her tried and true favorites and these are just a few:

They are billed as “Cat and the Fiddle” and it is a mix of original versions of cover tunes, their own originals and ambient music. She can also be seen performing as one of the Ukeladies in partnerships with Genesis Guajardo. Catherine is also a teacher for the Smart Family Literacy Project.

ow, it’s September and Labor Day has come and gone. It’s hard to believe 2020 is winding down. It’s hard to believe we have lived a nightmare for an entire year: a pandemic of COVID19, shutting down the entire US economy, trying to safely reopening our economy, putting us more in debt, a presidential election with more accusations and rhetoric than real substance, shutting down our schools and now trying to figure out how to start school all over again.

So much to write about, but since I’m a retired educator, I feel compelled to write about “It’s Time for School”.

This shutdown has really shaken us to our core. So many families have been negatively affected. Parents and teachers want to keep their children and students safe, but with the COVID19 virus still spreading and possibly rearing its head for a 3rd wave this fall and winter there are real concerns on sending kids back to school. As we adjust to this new normal, we must find a way to get kids back to the classroom, teachers teaching and parents back to work.

Many people now realize they may have taken schools for granted. Parents now see how difficult it is to teach their own children and that schools helped occupy their children so parents could go to work. Schools provide for person-to-person socialization and interaction away from “devices”, television, and the cell phone. Administrators, coaches, and teachers often are the shoulders for kids

to cry on and to tell of their trials and hardships they are enduring at home or on social media. Schools allow students to engage and excel in extracurricular activities like, Ag, Theater Arts, Band and Sports. Schools provide millions of breakfasts and lunches for the needy. Special Needs students get services that parents can’t provide, such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech, 504 accommodations, interventions, and modifications just to mention a few. Schools provide warmth and AC where many children have none. For some, schools are a haven because some children live on the streets, in cars or in homeless shelters. Some live in places that have no running water, toilets and electricity.

There are many reasons to criticize schools, such as the curriculum taught, the expectations by teachers, the bullying of children, the fear of keeping them protected from school shootings, and more. However, a vast majority of schools do a great job! Schools have teachers who care and only want to do the best for their students. There will always be challenges and differences with parents and teachers, players and coaches, students and teachers, and finally students and students. It is during these times we learn to grow as a person, learn from our mistakes, our challenges and develop relationships that will help us become citizens of tomorrow.

So, yes, let’s work hard to defeat and come out of this pandemic so we can move ahead. After all....it’s time for school!

Spring Cleaning

he Ronald McDonald House of Galveston continues to serve as a refuge for families of those hospitalized and critically ill children who cannot safely return to their homes during this coronavirus pandemic.

Fortunately, there are only a few but the staff has devoted their time and energy maintaining our “home away from home” for these extended family members. Local volunteers have brought cooked and prepared meals for everyone…calling ahead and leaving the provisions on the doorsteps. Our blessings remain, continue and carry on! Thank you to you all!

The staff is using this opportunity to “spring” clean and re-sanitize the House from the top to the basement and garage areas. When the children return, they will be greeted by fresh and sparkle…hopefully that will be soon.
