Award-winning musician John Webster of Azle has been gracing people with his country gospel music since 1970.

You could say it began in his home state of Alabama, where as a teenager, he recorded his first album with a group

called the Crusaders Quartet.

Since moving to Texas in 1976, he has recorded 10 additional albums and has had eight national releases to Gospel Music Radio. Two of those albums were recorded with his brother, Don, who plays guitar, sings backup vocals and co-writes music with John.

“Our writing comes out of our experience with Jesus and our circumstances. It’s a special gift, and our hearts are filled with gratitude for it,” John said.

John’s favorite song he has written and composed is entitled “Come to Me.” “I love the message in it because it goes straight to the heart,” he said. “I wrote this song while touring in France and sang it for the very first time to an association of French Pastors and their families. It was very effective in speaking to their hearts with the message of the love of God. It is a timeless message, and that is why it’s my favorite.”

John’s love for music was instilled

at a young age by his mother, and his Alabama roots influenced his country gospel sound.

“Our mother, Loretta, taught us to love Christian music and helped us get started with our singing,” John said.

Church also played a role.

“We grew up in church, and that’s where we learn to love our Christian music and heritage.”

You could say it was also Loretta who inspired John and Don to begin regularly performing in nursing and assisted living facilities across Texas.

Loretta was in a nursing home for eight years until she passed away at age 91.

Don had been in the home health business for many years before they started “bringing the old time gospel songs to residents everywhere,” John said.

Before the pandemic, the brothers often performed locally at Eagle Crest Assisted Living, Legacy Oaks Assisted Living, Azle Manor, and the Senior Citizens Center, as well as facilities all over the state.

John said the seniors they perform for tell them their music reminds them of “home” in their younger years.

“We believe our older communities of people should never be forgotten,” he said. “They’re our teachers and foundational builders of our nation and our lives. It is easy to love them, and when we are with them it reminds us of being with our own parents and grandparents.”

In addition to performing at nursing and assisted living facilities, each year the brothers take 50-60 seniors from the Azle Senior Center and surrounding areas on tour. Last time they traveled to Branson, Missouri for the “Christmas in Branson” tour which offers six shows, including their namesake show—“The Webster Brothers”—at the Nashville Nightlife Theater. Their show features country music legend Barbara Fairchild and her husband, Roy Morris.

Unfortunately, their tours for 2020 have been cancelled due to the COVID

crisis.

“We hope and pray we can start them back up in 2021,” Webster said.

For now, their most recent album, “He’ll Get Us to the Shore,” is out and available on their website www. thewebsterbrothers.org. The title track is currently climbing in the Top 40 up the Christian Voice Magazine and Cashbox Magazine on both Southern Gospel and Country Gospel charts. Their other song, “Hey Hey Church Lady,” went all the way up to #4 on the Christian Voice Magazine Chart. After six months on the chart, the song remains in the Top 100.

Although they’re no longer touring, their show, “The Websters Gospel Music Show,” keeps them busy and airs on UANetwork.tv in the Dallas/ Fort Worth metroplex each Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Their show can be viewed at www.uanetwork.tv.

Writing, singing, and performing country gospel music is nothing new to brothers john and don Webster.

“It has been the joy of my life to lead worship, and I have a great team of people surrounding me that are such wonderful and committed Christians,” John said.

When asked what led him into the music ministry, John recalled how 9/11 changed the course of his life.

“I was in England (touring) on 9/11 when our nation was attacked, and it woke me to the fact my family and friends needed me at home, so I came home and ended my international touring.”

Seven years of touring in the U.K., “wearing out two buses” and doing television and radio was a huge adjustment for John, but he missed it all upon returning home.

“But God taught me to grow where I am planted, so I started doing other things with my music at home which led me later to accept my position at The Bay Church,” John said.

Coming home also paved the way for John to begin working with his brother, Don. “I never dreamed we would get to do this,” John said. “Don is a great Christian singer and a man of God. I am so grateful everything has worked out the way it has.”

After having toured not only in the U.K. but also the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Europe, John believes there really is no place like home.

“I love Azle, and after living here 23 years I can’t imagine being anywhere else,” he said.

Music has been a life-long ministry for Azle’s John Webster.

“We believe our older communities of people should never be forgotten...

They’re our teachers and foundational builders of our nation and our lives.”

There and back again Robert Landers reflects on going from Azle to pro golf and back

Robert Landers has never gotten tired of being the man from the middle of nowhere that made it onto the Senior PGA Tour.

The Azle native’s story – going from a cow pasture to the manicured fairways of professional golf – was told everywhere from the Los Angeles Times to Sports Illustrated. In 1994, Landers qualified for the Senior Tour and played the 1995 and 1996 with some of the legends of the game. He’d never played professionally before, and didn’t know anyone that played when he took up the game in his 20s. He wasn’t even sure he was practicing correctly

“I had just one club, and we’ll call it practicing, but to me it was golf,” he said.

So when he was going up against all those ex-PGA Tour stars, he wanted to prove you didn’t need a country club membership to carve up a course. The hokey headlines – “Holy Cow, Robert!” “The Farmer’s New Field” – never bothered him. Heck, his own autobiography is called “Greener Pastures: An Incredible Journey from the Farm Fall 2020 Heritage 7

to the Fairways.” (The legendary golfer Chi Chi Rodriquez, who grew up on a sugar plantation in Puerto Rico, wrote the forward.)

“I think it’s more fun,” Landers said.

“You get to rub it in to those that think the city’s the only thing.”

Now that he’s 76, Landers’ game isn’t what it used to be – it’s “over with,” as he said. But he still makes time to go out to the course and help out the next wave.

“I went out to the golf course with a girl that’s going to be in her last year (in school), and she’s a player,” Landers said. “I have a great-granddaughter that was playing too, and she’ll be a sophomore this year.

“I played six holes, and it beat me up pretty good.”

Landers’ passion for golf isn’t just limited to beating up city boys on the senior tour.

“The one thing I’ve tried to do for 30, 40, 50 years is to introduce as many people as I possibly could to golf,” he said.

“Little kids, if they’re old enough to hold a club, they’re old enough (to play).”

He loves the game so much because, as he says, “it’s the ultimate challenge.”

“It’s something that cannot be conquered no matter what,” he said.

“There’s always something that could be better.”

CONSTANT CHANGES The game has changed significantly since he was on tour.

“One of the better things I’ve thought has happened is leaving the pin in the hole (on putts),” he said. “I’ve always left it in if I was off the green chipping.

“A lot of it is mental attitude – some people think they’re great putters and they’ll take it out. I’ve always thought it’ll hurt more than help.”

On the amateur side, advances in equipment help golfers hit balls farther, straighter and with more consistency, which “should” make it easier on amateur players, Landers said, although that’s not always the case.

He’s not in favor of “bifurcation,”

Landers’ 1994 qualification for the Senior PGA Tour made headlines in Sports Illustrated, the Washington Post, and, yes, the Azle News.

“I think it’s more fun...You get to rub it in to those that think the city’s the only thing.” - Robert Landers which would create a separate set of new equipment rules between professionals and amateurs.

“I really think that it should be the same for everybody,” he said. “In some of the tournaments – for example, the U.S. Open – the top amateurs get a chance to play in it.”

Landers would know that it’s not the equipment that makes the golfer – he didn’t have an equipment deal when he qualified for the senior tour.

And he’d know about the U.S. Open, too, having qualified for that and the U.S. Amateur in 1980, missing the cut in both.

THE LOVE OF THE GAME Landers has spent the last few years

trying to make sure that his love of golf is passed down to the next generation.

“The one thing I do, I support the kids that will go to the pros at the course and take lessons,” he said. “I have a friend that’s donated some money to pay for these lessons. That gives some of them a chance to go somewhere in golf that they might not otherwise.”

He’ll pass on a few lessons every now and then, as well.

“I can go out and share with them,” he said. “My expertise is for sure not anything technical.”

But if you’re looking for a lesson on how to show city slickers that it doesn’t take a $2,000 set of Callaways and three private instructors to make the TOUR, well, Landers is your man.

Hogye and his daughter Shaye are part of the team at Hogle Insurance Group, located at 167 W. Main Street.

The independent insurance agency has been in Azle since 1984, which is the same year Hogye and his wife, Kay, moved to Azle from Electra, near Wichita Falls.

He was working for Aldi Savings, and the branch manager job in Azle came open. Kay was flying for Southwest Airlines at the time, and the move to the Metroplex just made sense.

Hogye was able to continue working for Aldi and do some insurance on the side with Farmers Insurance, but within the year, he was an insurance man full time.

“I had always wanted to be in this business, and it just never worked out,” he said. “My college roommate and I tried to do it and couldn’t make it happen.”

Shaye came along one year later, and the family has lived in Azle ever since.

Hogle Insurance Group wasn’t envisioned as a family affair. Both Shaye and Hogye say they never expected to wind up working together as professionals, even though Shaye spent plenty of time as a kid doing odd jobs around the office.

“After I graduated college (from Texas Christian University), I wanted to do advising,” Shaye said. “My dad was like, ‘Well, why don’t you work here part-time, and see what you want to do?’

“When I started working here, I realized that this business was a lot like advising. This is kind of like the same

thing I want to do, but I’d rather be in the family business.”

And Hogle Insurance really is a small-town family business. Hogye found himself on the wrong end of that mindset back when he was under the State Farm umbrella, and he and a local customer found themselves over a legal disagreement involving trailer insurance.

State Farm sent down two “city lawyers” in three-piece suits, Hogye said, while the local customer defended himself. The jury split the decision right down the middle, which was a

learning experience for Hogye.

“There was no way the jury was going to give you anything other than a partial award,” the judge told him.

Having been in the business for more than three decades, Hogye’s seen the world of insurance undergo a technological revolution.

“Simply going from flipping a manual and looking up pricing to the digital world,” he said. “Leaps and bounds.”

Shaye said she almost didn’t believe her father when he told her rates used to be kept in manuals.

“I was like – wait, what?” she laughed.

“Everything was paper and pencil back then,” Hogye said, “which, to some degree, I wish we still did.”

“You could really do it pretty quick.”

Hogye said he bought his first computer for $600 in “around 1986 or 1987” from a man his old college roommate knew. He brought it back to his office – which used to be where Dr. McCreary’s dentist office currently is – set it down, and stared at it.

“I’ll never forget, I walked in, I set that computer down, and I thought, ‘I don’t have any idea what to do with this.

Nothing. Except plug it in.’”

But by the early 1990s, Hogye was on the forefront of the digital age.

“Buddy, after that, I went high-tech,” he said. “They came out with a handheld computer, and they had chips you could put in the back, so if you wanted to write an auto, you’d put the chip in there.

“It’d print out this little receipt. And nobody else had one.

At the time, I was out there in front – I was nearly to the moon.

“And then I remember one day somebody asked, ‘Do you have a fax machine?’” And I said, ‘A what?’”

Just as the insurance business has changed and progressed, so has Azle.

When Hogye got here in 1984, he said, it was a true small town. That’s the Azle Shaye grew up in, as well.

“I would say when I moved here, there was a real core of old-time Azle Shaye Hogle people,” Hogye said. “I was an outsider, there’s no question about that.”

But now traffic has skyrocketed, the fast-food restaurants have moved in – and Hogye Hogle himself, Rotary Club fixture and Chamber of Commerce member, is part of the core.

“I remember it was so easy, if you wanted to go mid-city, it was 20 minutes. There were no lights,” he said. “A friend of mine used to go to playoff games at Pennington Field all the time. It was 20 minutes, 30 minutes to get over there.

“Through the years, I have been an hour-and-a-half getting there. That’s the biggest change.

“And the bad news is, now I’m part of the old guard.”

Hearty, warm and filling soups are some of the best things about fall.

They're a great way to stretch ingredients to make larger meals. Soups don't have to take a long time to make – many of these recipes are quick and easy and take half an hour.

Soup Tips • You can save time by pre-cooking some of your vegetables. Cooking them

in the pan with butter or bacon grease adds flavor. After they're cooked, deglaze the pan with stock or water.

• To make a thicker soup, dust the cooked vegetables with flour to make a roux, before adding your liquids and other ingredients.

• Is your soup too greasy? After it's sat on the stove to cool, you might notice that there's grease collecting on the top. Toss in a slice of sandwich

bread to soak up the grease.

• Instead of adding milk to a cream soup, try a dollop (or two) of sour cream. It makes the soup so much creamier, and you won't dilute the soup with milk.

• The next time you buy a rotisserie chicken, instead of throwing away the bones, boil them for stock. Homemade chicken stock is easy to make, economical, and adds flavor to a soup.

Easy Chicken and Dumplings YIELDS: 4-6 servings PREP TIME: 20 minutes TOTAL TIME: 30 minutes INGREDIENTS • 4 cups of chicken broth • 3 cups of cooked shredded chicken • 1 can of condensed cream of chicken soup • ¼ teaspoon of poultry seasoning • 1 can refrigerated buttermilk biscuits • 2 medium carrots, chopped • 2 celery ribs, chopped • ¼ cup onion, chopped pillsbury

DIRECTIONS In a large pot, heat broth, chicken, soup and seasoning to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to simmer for 5 minutes covered, stirring occasionally. Increase heat to medium-high and return to a low boil.

Roll biscuits out on lightly floured surface to 1/8-inch thickness, cut into ½-inch wide strips.

Place biscuit strips one at a time into the boiling soup.

Add carrots and celery and reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Salt and pepper to taste.

Zuppa Toscana Soup (inspired by Olive Garden) YIELDS: 4-6 servings PREP TIME: 10 minutes TOTAL TIME: 60 minutes INGREDIENTS • 1 lb. ground Italian or turkey sausage • 4-5 russet potatoes, ¼-inch slices • ½ cup onion, chopped • 2 tablespoons garlic, minced • 32 oz. chicken broth • ½ stick of butter • 1 ½ cups of kale, roughly chopped • 1 ½ cup heavy whipping cream • ¼ cup bacon, chopped DIRECTIONS Brown sausage in large pot. Add chicken broth, garlic, potatoes and onion to pot. Cook on medium-high heat until boiling, reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes, covered, stirring occasionally. Fold in butter, cream kale, and bacon, replace cover, simmer for 15-20 additional minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Chicken Taco Soup YIELDS: 4-6 servings PREP TIME: 10 minutes TOTAL TIME: 60 minutes INGREDIENTS • 3-4 chicken breasts, cooked and shredded • ½ cup onion, chopped • 1 package of taco seasoning • 1 15-16 oz. can chili beans • 1 15-16 oz. can kidney beans, drained • 1 15-16 oz. can black beans, drained • 1 15 oz. can whole kernel corn, drained • 1 8 oz. can tomato sauce • 2 10 oz. cans of diced tomatoes with green chilies • 32 oz. chicken stock • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded • ½ cup cilantro, chopped • sour cream, for topping • tortilla strips, for topping pillsbury

DIRECTIONS Place all ingredients into large pot on stove and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce and simmer, covered, for 30-45 minutes stirring occasionally. Or place into crock pot and cook 4 hours, stirring occasionally.

Serve topped with cheddar cheese, cilantro, and sour cream.

Beef Chili YIELDS: 6-12 servings PREP TIME: 20 minutes TOTAL TIME: 90 minutes INGREDIENTS • 3 lbs. ground beef • 3 tsp. vegetable oil • 1 medium onion, chopped • 2 tsp. minced garlic • 3 tbs. tomato paste

• 6 tbs. chili powder • 3 tsp. smoked paprika • 3 tsp. garlic powder • 3 tsp. onion powder • 3 tsp. ground cumin • 2 10 oz. can tomato sauce • 1 32oz beef broth • 2 tsp. pepper • 1 ½ tsp. salt

DIRECTIONS Place vegetable oil and ground beef in large preheated 6.5 qt. pot. Cook meat until browned.

Add onion and garlic, stir while cooking. Add dry seasonings to mixture and stir. Add tomato sauce and broth and stir. Cook over medium-high heat for 10 minutes. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Serve with sour cream, onions, or any other desired toppings.

Creamy Tomato Bisque Soup YIELDS: 6-8 servings PREP TIME: 20 minutes INGREDIENTS • 2 tbs. olive oil • 4 garlic cloves, minced • 1 large yellow onion, finely chopped • 2 cans peeled tomatoes • 1 cup chicken stock • 2 tbs. sugar • ¼ cup half and half • 8 large basil leaves, roughly chopped • ¼ tsp. dried oregano • salt and pepper to taste DIRECTIONS In heavy pot or dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add garlic and saute until fragrant, then add onions, stirring occasionally about 8 minutes. Add peeled tomatoes with juice, chicken stock, and sugar, bring to a low simmer. Cook uncovered for 10-12 minutes or until thickened. Add the half and half, and dry seasonings.

Transfer to a immersion blender and puree soup until there are no large chunks left. May serve topped with cheese, onions, sour cream, or croûtons and goes great with grilled cheese sandwiches.

Grandma’s Grilled Cheese Sandwiches PREP TIME: 5 minutes TOTAL TIME: 10 minutes INGREDIENTS • Sliced cheese • Butter or margarine • Sandwich bread DIRECTIONS Using a non-stick skillet, butter one side of the piece of bread, and place it in the pan, butter side down. Put a piece of cheese on top. Then butter another slice of bread, and place it on the cheese, butter side up. Fry the sandwich until you can see the cheese melting, then flip it in the pan. Remove when done and serve with your favorite bowl of tomato soup. Cut the sandwich into triangles for dipping!

Martin Feminella has been helping to feed not only the community’s stomachs, but their minds and souls as well.

He was born in Long Island, New York in 1958 and from a young age was surrounded by mentor tradesmen.

“I learned the trades of cabinet maker, coppersmith, and jeweler,” said Feminella.

He worked on restoration of museum quality pieces from around the world and created new pieces of work in the private sector.

“Being Italian, the passion for food has always been there so I also did catering and ran local pubs, “said Feminella. “I managed and consulted with restaurants and did catering on request.”

Feminella was a manager for the largest pest control company in north Texas during the day and running a 5 star restaurant in Fort Worth for a friend at night.

He moved to Azle about 20 years ago and the day after he signed paperwork on that home, he received the news that he had cancer.

“It took a few days to digest the news,” Feminella said. “Many decisions had to be made in a short period of time and after speaking with family and loved ones I decided on a treatment plan.”

Feminella continued to work the pest control and restaurant jobs, all while taking daily trips to Azle to track progress on his home being built.

ended, he closed on his new home and threw a block party for the existing eight neighbors at the time just to develop a sense of community. Many of those first friendships are still going strong today and that neighborhood has grown to over 30 homes.

“I believe we have one of the best and closest neighborhoods in Azle,” added Feminella.

After what had been a very stressful year, he took a leave of absence from both jobs and while recovering, interviewed with DynCorp, a military contractor, where he oversaw logistics, return and repair of military aircraft.

It was about 10 years later that damage from the cancer treatment forced Feminella to stop working completely.

“My arteries in my legs as well as my aorta affected my ability to walk, stand or sit for long periods of time,” said Feminella. “This affected me more than the cancer and after quite a few surgeries I am still recovering today.”

Feminella has been very involved in community events including Sting Fling, Christmas on Main Street, the Azle Animal Shelter, Azle Memorial Library and Azle hospital fundraisers. He also contributes to planning for Azle Music in the Park.

Feminella has turned that passion into full time volunteering work.

He volunteered for a group in Azle for five years, picking up supplies for projects as well as drinks and snacks for the volunteers.

“People saw what passion I had for what I was doing and a phone call was made to pick up pre-made boxes of food,” said Feminella. “I reached out to Kelvin Miles, Kenny Russel and Shannon Smithers to help pick up and deliver these boxes.”

This was the start of the Food CoOp in Azle in his mind. After some thought and planning, the idea came to life.

The Food Co-Op is made up of four member ministry groups: Life and Liberty, The Refuge, Project Hope, and Bibles and Bread. Together these groups host events for members of the community to pick up fresh produce and shelf stable groceries and even precooked meals.

“We cooked about 3,000 meals for the homeless and folks in need in our area,” said Feminella. “We plan to continue to prepare homeless meals and local meals in the future with the blessing of the kitchen at First United Methodist Church.”

The Food Co-Op would like to expand their group to include more likeminded organizations in the future and to network for the common goal of having a building to store donated and purchased products.

“The main goal of the Food Co-Op is to provide food,” added Feminella.

“We would also like to have a community kitchen where members can cook and prepare food for their outreaches and provide pantry distribution.”

He also added that one idea is to create a pay as you wish cafe to help pay bills and be a place for other members to hold planning meetings and help create jobs for people starting over in life.

“Sometimes when people pick up food, they don't know how to prepare a healthy meal,” he said. “We would like to offer cooking classes as well.

When asked where Feminella sees himself in five to ten years he said, “I still plan to be active in the community and oversee the Food Co-Op as it reaches its goals.

“I will mentor people so whatever contributions I have made to the community will continue on.”

Chiropractic and Pregnancy It is often commented as well that women do not even realize that they can be adjusted during pregnancy.

There are many techniques used by various chiropractors and all are essentially safe during pregnancy, however, some may be more comfortable than others.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? 1. Reduced Nausea Nausea, or morning sickness, is one of the most common pregnancy symptoms that can be highly uncomfortable and difficult to endure throughout your first trimester. A chiropractor can help reduce nausea and vomiting by realigning your spine and improving overall nervous system function. As a result, your hormones can achieve a healthier balance to eliminate or lessen the severity of your morning sickness.

Women who want to experience a natural childbirth without the use of medications can benefit from chiropractic care during pregnancy to help simplify and improve the birthing experience.

3. Relief from Back Pain As your body prepares for labor and delivery, it produces a hormone called relaxin that relaxes and loosens all the ligaments and joints in your pelvic area. This may cause some to experience instability and pain in their spines as supporting ligaments

As I mentioned earlier, there are many techniques used in manipulative treatment of pregnant women. Such diagnosis that changes the course of

treatment is placenta previa, placental abruption or any other compromise to the placenta. It is always good to know and be familiar with any special circumstances that may arise during pregnancy so that you can discuss options with your obstetrician and chiropractor.
