It is my honor as Chairman of the Board for La PorteBayshore Chamber of Commerce to extend heartfelt greetings to all readers of the 2020-2021 Membership Directory and Magazine. The La Porte Chamber of Commerce was started in 1923 so our vibrant history dates back 97 years and has since encompassed our neighboring Cities of Shoreacres and Morgan’s Point. It is our hope that you will turn to this directory to shop our local businesses; to participate and partner in area organizations; and to support and promote economic development within the communities of the La Porte-Bayshore area. This, friends, is the mission of your Chamber of Commerce and why we Brenda Thompson value YOU – both as a current and a future member.

2020 Chairman of the Board I’d like to extend a special appreciation to our staff and the Board of Directors, our membership, community volunteers, and especially the Corporate sponsors … You are the glue that make us successful!

Our unstoppable staff (Jeff Martin, President; Megan Weaver, Office Manager; and Melanie Battreal (Admin. Asst) and the twenty-one installed Board of Directors, have faced unprecedented challenges head-on for a very interesting year. In spite of Covid-19, if there is anything that we’ve learned in 2020, it’s that we are flexible and ever-present even in a virtual world. With teamwork and dedication of our amazing membership, we have been able to contribute close to $10,000 in scholarships to local students this year alone. We also provided masks to every First Responder (Police, EMS, and Fire) within our three cities and to each teacher / staff member of LPISD to #keeplaportestrong. We’ve handed out cases of hand-sanitizers and were still able to pull off some fun social-distanced events.

There is no better time to get involved than right now. Your support of the listings within this directory helps to promote a healthy and dynamic local economy from all angles. Our future is bright and promising as the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce will be relocating our office to the old bank building @ the corner of Main and Broadway. The exciting part is that we’ll be able to promote your businesses and serve our community while helping revitalize Main Street and the Broadway district. With the partnership of all three Cities of La Porte, Shoreacres, and Morgan’s Point, it’s going to be really nice to center ourselves in the middle of the action.

Our expected move is for Spring 2021, so it makes sense to enhance our city’s publicity and marketing, along with a Shop Local initiative, for our community businesses to thrive in the coming years ahead. We are here to help make the most of your membership now more than ever before.

If you’re a current or past member, or new to the area, we want to work with you to hear your goals and how we can serve you. We have fantastic committees and events that offer ways to get involved: • Membership Development & Community Activities – Sylvan Beach Festival (our pride and joy), Ambassadors, Cook-outs, New Teachers Luncheon, Honoring our First Responders, Fishing Tournament, Golf Tournament, Salute to Industry • Economic Development - Partnering with the City of La Porte to promote Marketing & Tourism • Workforce Development - Partnering with LPISD, supporting students and the critical need for skilled vocational employees in our Gulf Coast region • In 2020, we offered free Maxwell training to members, starting with “Leading through Crisis” and will have more offerings in coming months • We will soon be putting together a Job Board listing on our webpage accessible to members • Small Business - Shop Local Initiatives to promote the community businesses • Non-Profit Team – being formed in 2021 to support local charities I’m excited about the growth we’ve had in recent months and look forward to seeing our Chamber excel in coming years. Our future is in great hands as I pass the torch to Garret Berg, Manager of Community Relations & Events with Port Houston. Garret is passionate about workforce and economic development and will do a great job leading the way as your next Chairman of the Board.

The City Of La Porte. . .

A Proud History And A Bright Future. . .

La Porte, Texas is known for its beloved small town feel filled with thriving businesses and a surrounding metropolis. We became the great city we are today through visionary leadership from previous City Councils and Mayors, execution of plans from City staff, and engaged residents. From our inception, this city has been blessed with visionary leaders.

From the Beginning: From the beginning many giants of early Texas Fell in love with the area. In 1846, John Beazley became one of La Porte’s first recorded families when he purchased 9 square miles in the area.

Years later he sold 600 acres to the Nebraska Syndicate for $8.00 an acre. The Nebraska Syndicate acquired another 800 acres from Allien, began to layout the town, and started a national campaign promoting La Porte. The results of the campaign culminated on New Year’s Day in 1892 when lots were sold from the steps of the County Courthouse for $25 each to people from all over the union.

On August 10, 1892 the City was officially incorporated and J.H. York was designated as the first Mayor. The City’s founders had a vision for the City including the following four objectives: 1) the establishment of a great commercial center and leading harbor on the coast of Texas, 2) the establishment of a natural summer and Continued on Page 8

The City Of La Porte. . . winter resort area, 3) the building of a manufacturing center for the Southwest, and 4) the establishment of an education center second to none in the Southwest. Today you can explore all of La Porte’s history at the Sylvan Beach Depot Museum. Once the hottest weekend stop, this gem of a museum showcases all of La Porte’s 125 years.

Sylvan Beach: The visionary founders of La Porte recognized the beauty of the bay and invested in it immediately, setting aside 22 acres of land for the famous Sylvan Beach Park. As Frank Lloyd Wright said, “It is foolish to ignore beauty; you’ll soon find yourself without it.

Your life will be impoverished. But if you wisely invest in beauty, it will remain with you all the days of your life.” Community gatherings began in 1893 for the Fourth of July celebration and continues today! In 1900, Sylvan Beach Park received the first of many

The City Of La Porte. . . entrance gates and Sylvan Beach Pavilion was built. Known for big bands and dance parties, the pavilion welcomed thousands of visitors and many of the greatest bands of the era. Today, Sylvan Beach still welcomes thousands of visitors for events, family picnics, fishing, and more. Don’t forget, it is home to some great fishing on the 1,100 ft. long pier.

San Jacinto Monument/Battleship Texas: Every Texan knows, on April 21, 1836, Texas won its independence from Mexico in the Battle of San Jacinto. Did you know that

the San Jacinto Battleground is located in La Porte – just five miles from downtown? The San Jacinto Monument stands on the battlegrounds and is the world’s tallest war monument – everything is bigger in Texas! Today you can take the elevator 480 feet to the top of the San Jacinto Monument and stand beneath the 220-ton Lone Star of Texas and witness what its heroes created. In the San Jacinto Museum of History, immerse yourself in all that makes the Lone Star state great.

The City Of La Porte. . .

128 Years Old: Just a short three years ago the City Of La Porte celebrated 125 years is style! Showcasing some of our favorite venues: Sylvan Beach, San Jacinto Monument, Five Points Plaza, La Porte Municipal Airport, and Lomax Arena.

La Porte is known for its history of music events, whether it’s big bands performing at Sylvan Beach Pavilion or concerts at the Sylvan Beach Festival, concerts at La Porte events were a must! Concerts have included performances by: Clay Walker at Sylvan Beach, Cody Johnson at San Jacinto Monument, the Mambo Jazz Kings at Sylvan Beach Pavilion, and the Bayou City Brass Band at Mardi Gras.

La Porte also has a proud tradition of parades that continue today, including: Sylvan Beach Festival Parade, Fourth of July Parade, and Juneteenth Parade.

In more recent years, La Porte has become known for some great races: Sylvan Beach Triathlon and La Porte By the Bay Half Marathon. Continuing this tradition, La Porte included a Family 5K Fun Run at our 125th celebration a few years ago. The race was so successful, the Parks and Recreation Department has decided to host a Doggie Dash 5K next year.

We are known for having a sold out crowd at the Lomax Arena for our Kid’s Rodeo featuring Mutton Busting, Calf Scramble, Pony Rides, Petting Zoo, and more. In fact, our residents loved this event so much, we have continued to plan it every year thereafter.

From Main Street Trade Days on the 1st Saturday of the Month to Mardi Gras in February, and Christmas on Main in December, there are several opportunities to grab your family and friends and enjoy downtown La Porte and Five Points Plaza. Other annual festivals include Summer Party on Main, Family Fright Night, Father Daughter Dance, and Breakfast with Santa.

The City Of La Porte Parks and Recreation. . .

The La Porte Parks and Recreation Department is working hard to make your hometown a fun and exciting place to live.

One of the ways in which the city provides a little joy to your neighborhood is by providing twenty-three parks throughout the community. Essentially, there is a park within walking distance of every home, which means sunny afternoon picnics, kite flying, or a relaxing afternoon of outdoor reading are just a short walk away. All of the city playgrounds are updated regularly and inspected monthly by certified playground inspectors to ensure safe and enjoyable places for your little ones to climb, play, slide, and swing.

In addition to the multitude of parks, La Porte Parks and Recreation maintains and staffs four public pools in operation during the scorching summer months where you and your family can splash into little cool down time. For some additional fun in the sun, there are three strategically placed splash parks.

The main artery of the system winds its way parallel to Fairmont Parkway from Pasadena all the way to the bay. The paved path is ideal for cyclists looking for a long weekend ride. At the eastern end is Little Cedar Bayou Park, where runners can take a rest beneath the shady trees, while watching their furry little training partner play at the dog park.

From the Little Cedar Bayou Dog Park, the trail splits into two separate personalities: one, continue along the paved wellmanicured path, or two, step off-road for a little rugged retreat.

Option two leads hikers down a dirt trace away from the park as it twists beside the bayou toward the open bay. The densely wooded surroundings swallow up the sounds of the city and with every step, stress and deadlines dissolve into distant memories.

The way ends with two unique bird-watching platforms (the first is pictured to the left), where the sweeping views of the bay are just what the doctor ordered. For a full map of the La Porte Trail System and more information visit LaPorteTX.gov/Trails.

The Summer Party on Main is just one of the numerous occasions hosted throughout the year. Other popular annual happenings include Main Street Trade Days on the first Saturday of every month, the Father-Daughter Dance and Mardi Gras on Main in February, Pet Palooza featuring the 1-mile Doggie Dash in March, the Sylvan Beach Festival in April, the Sylvan Beach Triathlon in June, an Independence Day parade and fireworks show in July, the La Porte Kids’ Rodeo at the Lomax Arena in August, Family Fright Night at Little Cedar Bayou Park in October, the La Porte Half Marathon in November, and Christmas on Main and Breakfast with Santa in December. It’s a full year packed with plenty of activities for all ages.

The La Porte-Bayshore Chamber: Proud History Of Leadership. . .

The La Porte Chamber of Commerce was formed in 1922 at a meeting at Dudley’s Café at Sylvan Beach Park. The organization was incorporated and chartered in March, 1923 by E.A. Johnson, H.B. Harrison, and A.T. Seaman.

Dues were $5 per member in the early years. A credit bureau was a part of the organization from 1923 until 1971.

In 1972, the Chamber changed its name to La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce to include the cities of La Porte, Morgan’s Point, Shoreacres, and Lomax. Lomax no longer exists as a separate city as it was annexed by the City of La Porte in April 1980.

The Chamber bylaws call for a board of directors which consists of 21 members, each elected to a three-year term. There are 7 retiring directors and 7 new directors each year. Officers are elected from the board members and include chairman of the board, chairman of the board-elect, and 5 vice-presidents. In addition, the Mayors of La Porte, Morgan’s Point, and Shoreacres are all ex-officio members of the board, as is the immediate past chairman.

The Chamber employs three professional staff members to serve the membership and the public: president, administrative assistant, and a part-time secretary/ receptionist.

Currently, standing committees and various task force groups are divided among 6 teams. The Chamber is fortunate to have a vast body of volunteers dedicated to the success of the many events and activities that they undertake.

The City Of Morgan’s Point. . .

The City’s 52-acre wetland and prairie restoration project known, as the Colonel James Morgan New Washington Prairie, is nearing completion. The project includes a parking lot for cars and buses, two observation decks, 10,700 feet of walking trails, 5-acre pond, 125 foot bridge across the pond with a 575 square foot covered seating area that spans the middle of the pond, and seven seating areas Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Inland Fisheries Division committed to stocking the pond with bluegill, largemouth bass, and channel catfish next spring. They will also offer ongoing support to ensure a healthy aquatic environment.

The City recently completed the renovation of the former City Hall

building as a 4,000 square foot community center. The Center will be utilized for City events, available to Morgan’s Point residents to rent.

The City’s Development Corporation is funding the development of plans and specifications to renovate Grimes Park which is adjacent to the community center. More than just a playground with benches, Grimes Park will be a destination recreation and gathering area whose footprint will increase by 45 percent. The park will include a covered pavilion, small amphitheater, bathrooms, trails, playground areas, splash pad, improved drainage, landscaping, fixed furniture, signage, and will meet current Americans with Disability Act standards. Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2021.

The City Of Shoreacres And HYC. . .

The City of Shoreacres continues to see new home construction, and numerous renovations, throughout the community of late. The city also continues to see multiple infrastructure upgrades as it strives to provide an excellent place for its residents to live, work and play.

Shoreacres is well known as a sanctuary from the hustle of today’s life, and two “retreats” are of special note: the city is a bird sanctuary, and home to the Houston Yacht Club.

The Shoreacres Civic Association helps maintain the flora and landscaping of the wooded environment of the city,

and organizes a number of fun events including an annual Easter Egg Hunt and Halloween festivities.

Also, the Shoreacres Recreation Association oversees the management of the lighted fishing pier on Miramar on Galveston Bay. There is also a boat ramp at the pier, and all add to the leisure conveniences of city residents. The pier, in fact, is a popular gathering place for residents as they not only use the pier, but also take in the beautiful sunrises – and a huge rising moon from time to time – over Galveston Bay.

Sailors from far and wide were in Galveston Bay off the Shoreacres shoreline earlier this year for the 2020 HOOD (Houston Open One Design) Regatta hosted by the Houston Yacht Club, the longtime Shoreacres landmark.

The La Porte Independent School District. . .

The final few months of the 2019-2020 year, and the start of the current 2020-2021 year at the La Porte Independent School District, have presented unprecedented challenges. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, students and teachers alike were forced to do their school work from home, electronically, through the end of this past school year, and almost half of the current year’s students and teachers are still “attending” classes online.

But the district’s Board of Trustees and Administration have been working diligently since the pandemic first started to ensure the best possible educational opportunities for the some 7,000 students in LPISD. Buses are running again, many students (but not all yet) are back in the classroom, sports events have resumed, and the district is moving forward with a firmer grip on the necessities required to create a safe learning environment for all involved.

One major change from the previous school year is that there is now a new leader on board. Dr. Walter Jackson has taken the reins as Superintendent of Schools,

following the retirement of former longtime Supt. Lloyd Graham.

Please take this opportunity to get to know Dr. Jackson a little better: Dr. Jackson has served in public education for 27 years; he has served as a

teacher, assistant principal, middle and high school principal, area superintendent, and superintendent of schools.

He is the first African-American superintendent in the 100-plus year history of La Porte ISD. Dr. Jackson held the same distinction for five years in his previous superintendent role in Brenham — the oldest school district in Texas.

Dr. Jackson has an impressive history of exemplary public school leadership, In 2009, he was named the Region 4 High School Principal of the Year. The National School Public Relations Association in 2017 named him one of 20 superintendents to watch in the nation. In 2019, he was named as the Region 6 Superintendent of the Year and was a finalist for TASB’s State Superintendent of the Year.

Prior to leading Brenham ISD, Dr. Jackson worked in Alief ISD for 21 years as a teacher, principal, and area superintendent.

An articulate and gifted public speaker, he has served as lecturer and presenter on key education topics at both state and national conferences.

Dr. Jackson holds a bachelor’s degree from Texas Southern University, a Master of Education in Administration from Prairie View A&M University, and a Doctor of Education from Baylor University. His post-graduate studies have taken him to the Harvard Graduate School of Education on four different occasions, where he earned the university’s esteemed Professional Leadership Certificate. Jackson also earned an Advanced Management Certificate from Rice University.

Dr. Jackson is an alumnus of Education Class III of the American Leadership Forum Houston-Galveston Chapter. He is a member of the 2012 class of Leadership Houston and is also a graduate to the National SUPES Academy, a Chicagobased superintendent preparation program.

Jackson has additionally completed the Thompson Executive Leadership Institute through the Region 13 Service Center.

In February 2020, Dr. Jackson was selected as one of only 20 U.S. recipients to receive the prestigious Fulbright International

A passionate lifelong learner, Dr. Jackson’s love of learning and leading has supported his travels to learn and research international school systems such as: China, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Austria, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.

He currently serves on the board of directors of the TASB Risk Management Fund, UIL Legislative Council, Texas Association of School Administrators, and recently at Baylor Scott & White Hospital.

Dr. Jackson is a Rotarian Paul Harris Fellow and member of the La Porte Rotary Club, La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce and La Porte Education Foundation Dr. Jackson describes himself as a “cultural strategist” and “equity warrior,” always seeking to create opportunities for students to take advantage of the public education system while pursuing the American Dream. He strongly believes that a child’s destiny is not determined by zip code, and that there’s nothing impossible to the people that believe in the transformative powers of a Great God and a good education. Students are afforded one time to be in school, Dr. Jackson notes, and he believes it is the role of professional educators to make this the most positive and impactful experience for all students.

Dr. Jackson and his wife Tanya have been married for 24 years, and are the proud parents of daughter Bailey, a sophomore at La Porte High School, and son Braelin, a junior at Texas College in Tyler. Dr.

Jackson enjoys attending local churches, community, sporting and social events, and visiting schools to meet students and teachers on a regular schedule.

Chamber Working For The Community. . .

Committee Chairs of the Workforce Development Committee Garret Berg of Port Houston and Brandon Bearden of Bayou City Industrial Contractors help a Professional Development Program for the Workforce students on March 26 at LPHS. The program had 30 students participate. Volunteers of the Chamber helped students with creating and building their resumes. This Program will have two more sessions, Mock Interviews, and a Reality Fair. The committee will give Scholarships to students at the end of the program.

The La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce hosts a monthly casual gathering at a Chamber Member Restaurant with no agenda other than self-introductions with name and business only – not even a “call me if I can help you!”

Maggie Menefee, representing the La Porte Police Officers Association, was named named 2020 Miss Sylvan Beach, and was the recipient of a $2,000 scholarship. First Runner Up Kaitlyn Hanson of Garden of Eden Floral Designs, $1,500 scholarship; Second Runner Up Breanna Zupan, La Porte Chiropractic, $1,250 scholarship; Third Runner Up Alexandra Sauceda, Bayou City Industrial Contractors, $1,000 scholarship; and Rajina Debesingh, representing Beacon Federal Credit Union, was Fourth Runner Up and received a $750 scholarship.
