elcome to the Spring 2020 edition of Strictly Business. As you are all aware, we are in the midst of difficult times. None of us could have foreseen the scenarios we are now facing together. Many of our members operate and manage essential businesses – stores, restaurants, factories and financial institutions. Many of you are facing the challenges of operating a business through an unprecedented shutdown. Whichever scenario you find your business in today, the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce’s commitment to our member businesses remains strong. As we continue to navigate the changing tides posed by this pandemic, our priorities remain the same — we are committed to keeping commerce running in Southern Kentucky. The Southern Kentucky Chamber has strived to keep our members informed through all aspects of the pandemic, sharing both national and state news, loan programs and initiatives. Our office is open and ready to research any questions you may have or issues you may be facing. In this issue of Strictly Business, our highlighted businesses are all Southern Kentucky Chamber Corporate Sponsors, and all have a
common theme: They are on the frontlines in combating the pandemic: Corbin Pediatric Associates, Grace Health and the City of Corbin. Working to keep our community healthy during a pandemic is heroic. There’s no denying the fact. When someone does become ill, their first call is generally to their primary care provider. Both Corbin Pediatrics and Grace Health fill that role with dedication to our community, our children, our families and friends. C
orbin Pediatric Associates has been providing quality pediatric healthcare for newborn infants through adolescence for families in Southeast Kentucky since 1975. Initially, Corbin Pediatrics started with one pediatrician in a clinic with three exam rooms. It has since outgrown space several times over the years, and currently has three pediatricians, five nurse practitioners and 24 exam rooms. The expert pediatricians and nurse practitioners at Corbin Pediatrics provide care for infants and children in many ways, such as physical exams/sports physicals, wellchild exams including vaccinations, and diagnosing and treating your child’s illnesses, infections, injuries and other health problems. In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Corbin Pediatrics reacted quickly to change office workflow in order to help protect patients, and to decrease
transmission. These changes were implemented on March 10, prior to having any positive cases in the tri-county area. The office has successfully implemented telehealth visits, which has been a huge success. Telehealth visits are virtual visits from the comfort and safety of the patient’s home using their phone, tablet or computer with a pediatrician or nurse practitioner. These visits are utilized to treat minor illnesses, such as ADHD follow up and refills, allergies, asthma follow up and refills, constipation, diarrhea, skin rash, head lice, etc. Corbin Pediatrics is also limiting Well Child Checkups and immunizations to ages newborn through age 24 months. For all clinic visits, Corbin Pediatrics is asking one parent or guardian to sign the patient in at the front desk for sick visits, or at the side entrance for well child visits. We ask that they would then leave an active phone number, return to their vehicle and the nurse will call when their exam room
is ready. Walk-in visits are currently not available (as of April 20, 2020). We ask that parents or guardians call the nurse triage line at the office for an appointment time. Saturday sick visits and evening clinic hours have also been temporarily suspended to decrease exposures. Only one parent or guardian should accompany the patient, and must have their temperature checked prior to being placed in an exam room. All staff members, who have patient contact are wearing PPE (personal protective equipment), with daily temperature checks prior to their shift. As for the future, post-coronavirus, Corbin Pediatrics plans to return to usual business hours and services, including evening, weekend and walk-in appointments. NORTHERN CONTOURS handiwork can be found on front lines of battle against COVID-19
N
ormally, Northern Contours, located in Corbin, KY would primarily be concerned with the manufacturing of kitchen cabinet doors and drawers. That is still the case, but lately the local plant has also been dedicating much of its time and resources to the production of products to be used in hospitals as they continue to fight against this country’s COVID-19 pandemic. Corbin Plant Manager Rick Bailey, who has been with Northern Contours for the past two decades, said, “We employ roughly 150 people, on average. Our corporate office is in Minnesota, along with two factories. We have a factory in Mesa, Arizona as well, and a plant in London, Ontario, Canada. Currently, we have over
4,000 customers that we serve in the U.S.” As already stated, Northern Contours is most widely known for making highquality, durable kitchen cabinet doors and drawers, as well as a wide array of accessories to go with them. In addition to that, it also manufactures supplies to
service other industries such as hospitality, medical and entertainment. “Our products go all over,” Bailey explained. “We are strategically located across the country so that we can adequately service people all over the U.S.” One interesting example of how Corbin’s plant has had a local impact is the fact that it produced all of the trays to go with the Tri-County Cineplex’s VIP reclining seats. Chances are good you
will find Northern Contours products in many kitchens, break rooms and medical facilities in this area as well. As for how they have been helping during this unprecedented time in our country’s history, Bailey said that he and his crew have been hard at work recently, producing hospital bed trays as quickly and as efficiently as possible. “We are willing to step outside of our comfort zone in order to try and help out in different ways,” Bailey said. He also mentioned the fact that the Corbin plant had recently donated the use of some of its machinery in order to assist in the manufacture of potentially life-saving personal protective equipment (PPE). “The team is really focused on community,” Bailey added. “They feel a sense of obligation to get these medical jobs prioritized, and to get those products out of here as quickly as possible. Luckily, we are very versatile in our ability to change on the fly and do different things. We’re used to that.” When asked about what it has been like for him to see the men and women of the Corbin Northern Contours plant work on these important jobs, Bailey said, “To see them get ahold of these hospital products, and to see what

that means to so many people out there… There is a lot of pride that goes along with watching them work on that. There is no talking anybody into it. It is absolutely a desire on their part to step up and make what we do available to the people who need it most.” During these uncertain times, Bailey said all Northern Contours employees are being asked to abide by strict safety standards when it comes to personal protection and general cleanliness. Workers are also being asked to adhere to social distancing standards while on the job until further notice. Cabinet doors and drawers may be Northern Contours “bread and butter,” but as we have seen, they also pride themselves on being versatile. That is a very good thing, especially in an uncertain economic climate like the one we are currently expe-
riencing thanks to COVID-19. In Bailey’s words, “We offer a lot of variety in what we do here. There is a lot

CHAMBER LUNCHEONS

The Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce held monthly membership luncheons in February and March that provided informative speakers for its members. During the Feb. 11 chamber membership luncheon, which was held at The Corbin Center, Dr. Melissa Newman, executive director of regional programming and regional stewardship at Eastern Kentucky University, spoke about making Kentucky’s Appalachia region a better place to live, work, grow and thrive.

During the March 10 chamber membership luncheon, Tommy Black, Greg Razmus and Heather Barrineau, who are members of the board of director’s committee for membership, unveiled the 20/20 Vision program to chamber members. The goal of the 20/20 Vision program is to add 100 new members to the existing 200 chamber of commerce members by September. Corbin Health and Rehabilitation Center, Hillcrest Health and Rehabilitation Center, and Williamsburg Health and Rehabilitation Center sponsored the March chamber luncheon, which was held at the Williamsburg Tourism and Convention Center, and spoke about steps taken to keep patients safe during COVID-19. The April chamber luncheon was canceled due to COVID-19. Heather Barrineau, Tommy Black and Greg Razmus spoke during the March luncheon about the chamber’s new 20/20 Vision program.

With its thriving downtown, which has become a model for small towns across the state that are seeking to revitalize, the City of Corbin has grown and prospered in recent years. However, city officials have seen downtown and small businesses of every kind struggling to survive in the wake of the COVID–19 outbreak.

“We are just trying to keep people encouraged that we are going to get to the other side,” said Mayor Suzie Razmus. “People just have to hold on. We are in it together.” Razmus said the pain and uncertainty those small businesses are experiencing is made even tougher in a community like Corbin because the owners are
friends and neighbors. “I don’t think there is one person in the city that hasn’t been affected in some way, even though local cases are very few,” Razmus said. Razmus is a small business owner herself. Her business that she owns and operates with her husband, Greg, the Tri-County Cineplex, has been closed.
Strictly Business After initially taking multiple steps to help protect staff and customers from the spread of COVID–19 in mid-March, the couple made the decision to close the theater one day before Gov. Andy Beshear ordered all the theaters closed. “We are trying to prepare for the next step,” Razmus said of the theater. “When we are able to open up, we want to make sure we follow all of the state and federal guidelines, and that the staff is well-trained on how we are going to do it.” Razmus said she is hearing the same things from other business owners, which is that they are hanging on, but that every day is a challenge. “It is not just financially, but mentally and physically,” Razmus said. “It is a big mountain to get over.” As to the city, Razmus and City Manager Marlon Sams said it is doing many of the same things to continue to operate and provide essential services, while limiting spending to only what is absolutely necessary because of the uncertain economic future. “We feel like local businesses understand the city is a business
as well. We have staff, and bills to pay,” Razmus said. As city manager, Sams is responsible for day-to-day operations of the city, and he will work

We are in it together. with the budget committee to prepare the budget for the next fiscal year. “What we are doing is trying to keep the city in a good place, financially,” Sams said explaining the city has limited spending by cutting out major expenses, unless it is an emergency, such as needed equipment. “We are in a good position, financially,” Sams said. “We have had a few good years where we have been very wise with spending.” Sams said it remains to be seen what the budget for the new fiscal year will look like. The annual budget is typically around $13 million. However, with the business shutdowns and slowdowns affecting multiple revenue streams, including occupational
taxes, restaurant taxes, and transient taxes, it will likely be a barebones budget. Work is continuing on the new splash pad on South Main Street, and the Miller Park project. However, Sams said the contracts for those projects had already been signed before the pandemic struct. “That was already signed, sealed, and delivered,” Sams said. With departments, such as The Arena and parks and recreation, Sams said it has provided an opportunity for employees to catch up on needed maintenance and repairs to the various facilities. “There is not a good thing in this, but we are doing things in our departments that we haven’t been able to do in a long time,” Sams said. “When everything gets back to normal, we will be ready.” If the shutdown continues for an extended period, one area of concern may become The Arena. All events through early June have been postponed, keeping the venue from generating any revenue to help pay the debt service. “We have money set aside so we could continue to make it for about six months,” Sams said. When this is over, Razmus and Sams each said they hope residents have learned from the situation. “I hope it has taught us to slow down and look at life,” Sams said. “I hope people see how important it is to support local small business, and to be kind to each other,” Razmus said. “I hope they recognize that we all have different opinions and different lifestyles, but we are all Corbinites.” Corbin City Hall lit in green for Kentuckians who have died due to COVID-19. #WeAreCityofCorbin

Grace Health Falls Highway Clinic preparing for the transition to being the primary lab drawing location for the Grace Health patient base.

race Health is a 501(c)(3) Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with eight community-based primary care sites, a women’s care site providing obstetrics, gynecology and a medically assisted treatment program for opioid addicted mothers. Grace Health services six nursing homes and 43 schoolbased health center sites. Grace Health provides health services to Bell, Clay, Knox, Leslie, Laurel, and Whitley counties. The mission of Grace Health is to show the love and share the truth of Jesus Christ to southeastern Kentucky, through access to compassionate, high quality primary health care for the whole person. In 2019, Grace Health served 35,000 individual patients of all ages in more than 125,000 medical, dental, behavioral health and substance use disorder treatment, and pharmacy visits. We aim to increase access to affordable health care for medically underserved residents who are medically vulnerable due to barriers to adequate care and the unique characteristics of the region including children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with low incomes. We accept Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance but also provide services on a sliding fee scale to those who are uninsured or
under insured. Grace Health is having an impact before and during the pandemic, including diverting demand for health services, not just COVID-19, at our overburdened hospitals.

We’re actively screening patients for COVID-19 and utilize our partner hospitals for testing. When appropriate, we are making arrangements for our physicians and other clinicians to assist our local hospitals during
a surge of COVID-19 patients. National and state leaders are advising people to stay home unless they require urgent medical attention and are recommending virtual treatment options instead. Probably, many are forgoing useful treatments out of fear too. As the number of cases of confirmed COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, skyrockets in the United States, primary care physicians are consumed with trying to best care for their patients while protecting themselves and their staff. That’s why telemedicine has become such a useful tool for providing care for these patients. By pivoting to virtual and telemedicine visits, we help patients manage chronic conditions and other care during stay-at-home orders and keep them out of hospital emergency rooms. To meet these needs, Grace Health has expanded telemedicine to 36 sites including six primary care clinics, one women’s health clinic, nineteen school-based health centers, seven nursing homes, and one hospital. Services include primary care, consultations, behavioral health, and patient engagement. More information about Grace Health is available on line at www.gracehealthky.org
