In Oliver Springs, the October Sky Festival brings visitors from around the region to celebrate the movie of that same name with music, food and booths selling local crafts. At the end of the month, All Hallows Eve is celebrated with traditional costumes and candy in many homes.

Trunk or treating has, in many places, seen increasing popularity in the past few decades. Instead of children walking from house to house, trunk or treating has become a quicker and more convenient option for some. Others point to trunk or treats as a safer alternative without having to worry about the risks of children being hit by a car or encountering other dangerous situations while making their rounds collecting candy. On the other hand, trunk or treat events have made it easier for people who don’t live in traditional neighborhoods where houses are close together and those with children who have special needs or disabilities to enjoy Halloween festivities. Another benefit to the trunk or treat method has been to promote community organizations such as schools or churches where many of these events are held.

“We believe this is an opportunity to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with Kingston and all of Roane County.” Said Ralton Emory, an Elder with Grace Community Church in Kingston. Last year alone they were able to give out 100 bibles and over 300 bags of candy which also contained gospel tracks. Grace will be hosting a Halloween event called ‘Kidz Fest’ to be held at Fort Southwest Point, weather permitting, where they usually have inflatables, food, and candy. If weather doesn’t allow the festival, they will instead meet at their church for a drive through candy giveaway. Emory said that last year they had to utilize this back up option due to rain and this year the Corona Virus will be an additional factor to watch. In addition, First Baptist Church of Kingston will also be holding their trunk or treat event entitled ‘Treat Street’ on Saturday, October 31st from 6 to 8pm.

ROBERT BAILEY Robert Bailey is the Roane County Historian. He enjoys the retelling of tales from Roane County’s past. Among his favorites are murders, unsolved crimes and other scary stories.
Gravestone Marks Sordid Tale AS TOLD BY ROBERT BAILEY
Located South of Kingston in the Laurel Bluff Cemetery in the Laurel Bluff Community is the tombstone of L. Mart Plemons, who was born June 7, 1873 and died on May 10, 1902. On his tombstone is the inscription of “Died from poison administered by his wife.”

Mart Plemons married October 30, 1892 in Roane County, Tennessee, Cora Parks. About a month after Plemons’ death, his widow, Cora Plemens, married June 2, 1902 in Roane County, Tennessee, J. Sylvester Jenkins. At this time, questions began to be raised about the cause of his death.
An inquest was
performed over the body and it was concluded that he had died from arsenic poisoning. It was suspected that he ate fruit for breakfast which had been laced with arsenic.
His
widow and her second husband were charged with first-degree murder and placed on trial. They were found guilty but the conviction was overturned. In March 1903, they were again tried and found not guilty by a jury trial. It might be that his family saw this tombstone as a way to express their verdict.

AN EASTERN TENNESSEE TRADITION
Gentle reader, there comes a time when repeating oneself is no longer repetition but instead tradition. Thus it is with our annual holiday column about our beloved Tennessee Apple Stack Cake, also known in this area as “Fruit Cake.” As we have said many times before, what is being offered in some grocery stores as apple stack cake is not our Tennessee Apple Stack Cake. Although we have never met a cake we didn’t like; and although the cake masquerading as apple stack cake probably tastes good, it just isn’t the real thing and we wouldn’t want some young person, or some newly arrived “come-here” to be led astray so, once again we revisit the column that first appeared on 23 November,

2007. “Let us confess up front that there are numerous minor variations depending upon the upbringing of the baker, the particular geographic locale, and personal tastes as to spices, sweetness, etc., but the basic item is always essentially similar — a stack of thin, crisp ‘tea cake’ layers interspersed with layers of spiced, sweetened cooked dried apples. One variation that the reader may be aware of is the difference in dough sweetener used by Roane County cooks on the north side of the river, and those south of the river. Most of those on the north side have always used granulated white sugar, while those on the south side have more often than not used molasses or
brown sugar. “In appearance, the cake resembles some of the German or Austrian Tortes being composed of several very thin layers of what was once known as Tea-cake dough, baked until lightly brown, cooled, and then layered with cooked dried apples. We have heard and read of dried peaches or apricots being used for the fruit filling, but have never tasted this version. In the days of our youth, this cake was known as ‘Fruit Cake,’ and if someone said they had ‘Fruit Cake,’ this was what they meant, not the heavy dark cake with raisins, currants, and glace cherries, pineapple, citron, and nuts, which most people now know as ‘Fruit Cake.’ “We would love to give the reader

the recipe, or receipt as they were formerly called, for our grandmother’s Apple Stack, or Fruit Cake, but, unfortunately, it was never written down, and since she prepared it from memory and habit, she found it difficult to tell just how she did it. Our mother tried to duplicate it by watching her make one of the cakes, but she finally gave up and devised her own version which was almost identical in taste and texture.“ Some time after she had devised this version of the cake, Bert Vincent, beloved local columnist for the News Sentinel published the following item shortly before Christmas one year, probably in the 1960s. This is what appeared in Bert’s Strolling column: “The Christmas season is near and if
you want a cake to make your friends ooh and aah when they see and taste it just try and (sic) old fashioned Tennessee stack cake. I have the recipe here from Martin Rywell’s Tennessee Cook Book. ‘”1 cup sugar, two eggs, 3 cups flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, ½ cup butter, ¾ cup buttermilk, 1 teaspoon baking powder, ¼ teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon nutmeg. In recent years, after giving this recipe, we have received complaints about the scarcity of dried apples, especially the sun-dried dark brown kind, but even those dried in “evaporators” have become hard to find. It occurred to us that those exponents of old-fashioned, handcrafted items, the Amish, might be a
good source, so a couple years ago we hied ourself westward to the Muddy Pond Community in search of dried apples, and sure enough we found them at the Muddy Pond General Store on Muddy Pond Road. Although not the dark brown colour of sundried, they are a rich tan in colour, and ought to serve our purposes adequately. If you want to try this source you might want to telephone to be sure of availability at (931)-4457829. This is an interesting store, and you may buy several things, just as we did. ‘”Now, for the filling: 1 pound dried apples or peaches, 1 cup sugar, 1 teapsoon (sic) allspice. Place dried fruit in pan. Cover with cold water. When boiling add sugar and allspice.

Holiday Tradition Cook about 20 minutes. Mash fruit with potato masher. Let cool. “To make the cakes: Mix and sift flour, baking powder, soda, salt and nutmeg. Add beaten eggs, cream shortening and sugar. Add alternately with milk to the mixture. Makes a stiff batter. Knead to a cookie dough. Pinch off a small ball and roll thin as a knife blade. Cut to fit 8-inch pan. This dough should make eight layers. Bake in hot oven, around 375 degrees. Spread layers or cakes, out to cool. ‘”OK. Now lay out one cake and spread it with the filling. Lay on another cake and spread it. And so on until you have your stack of eight cakes all filled between with delicious filling.”’ “We have a few comments about this recipe: If using self-rising flour, omit the baking powder and salt. As to the filling, our family most often used cinnamon rather than allspice in the apples. The dried apples should preferably be home or country dried, but if one must use commercially prepared apples, which are treated so as not to discolour, our mother would always mix them with dark brown apple butter from the store, such as that labeled ‘Whitehouse.’

“This produces an acceptable substitute for the homedried apples. Finally, the top layer should not get the fruit topping. “As to the instruction to cut the dough to fit an 8-inch pan, one should first consider how one is going to store the cake to age it, as it improves greatly with a day or two’s aging under a cover. We traditionally used a large kettle, so the layers could be larger than 8-inches. And most often our cakes were more than eight layers high. In fact our mother and our grandmother for some years engaged in a friendly rivalry to see who could make the cake with the most layers. After constructing cakes of more than twenty layers (twenty-two, if we recall aright), they finally had to terminate the contest since the cakes had grown so high that neither could find a pot or kettle tall enough to cover them to age! “Older readers will no doubt recognize the identity of Dr. Martin Rywell, the source of this recipe. He lived in Harriman, and was married to one of the Stone girls, of the Stone’s Department Store family, and they had an apartment over the store. Dr. Rywell’s Tennessee Cook Book was no doubt published by his own private press — Pioneer Press — through which he published numerous books which he authored on assorted topics, including firearms, timepieces, and many others. He was a devoted Democrat, and with the late Paul Easter with whom he worked closely, for a time constituted a force in the local party.” As the late Julia Child used to conclude her show, The French Chef: “Bon Appetit!”

No one knows for certain the date on which Jesus was born. For more than three centuries Christ-Mass was a moveable feast. And, in many places, it was celebrated on Jan. 6, the Epiphany. That’s the day, according to the Biblical account, when Jesus was manifested to the Magi. Early in the fourth century, Western church fathers settled on Dec. 25 to celebrate the Nativity. By the year 567, the 12 days between Dec. 25 and Jan. 6, Old Christmas, had become days of merry making following the penance and fasting of Advent. The name Santa Claus is a contraction of Santa Nicholas, the patron saint of German children. The German custom used to be for someone to distribute gifts on Dec. 5 dressed as a bishop. A great deal of Santa Claus lore, including the sleigh drawn by reindeer, began in the United States with Clement Clarke Moore’s poem, “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” now popularly known as “’Twas the Night Before Christmas.” The New York theology professor wrote the poem in 1822 as a Christmas Eve poem gift for his children. By 1838, almost every child in the country could recite the poem by heart.

Early Christmas cards were elaborate sheets of paper decorated with Biblical scenes or pictures of nature. In England, W.C.T. Dobson, R.A., is credited with having sent the first Christmas card in 1846. Louis Prang, a German-born printer working in his shop in Roxbury, Mass., printed the first American Christmas cards in 1875. Legend says that a 19th-century confectioner took a large order for popular Christmas candy called Christmas sticks. While laying out his candies to harden, he ran out of flat space so he bent curves on the ends of the sticks and hung them to dry on a string. Upon seeing the hanging sticks, a customer bought them to hang on his Christmas tree. Soon the confectioner was besieged with orders for the new “candy canes.” In old England, sprays of holly were placed on beehives to wish the bees a happy Christmas, and the bees are said to hum a carol in honor of the Christ child. And in Ireland, candles are set in the windows on Christmas Eve to light the way for the Christ Child, and only a woman named Mary may snuff them out on Christmas Day.

LOCAL ESTABLISHMENTS TO TICKLE YOUR TASTEBUDS IN ROANE COUNTY Most of the time we list all the restaurants in the area for you readers to try out. This time around, when people are stuck at home due to the coronavirus, we are going to look at the local “mom and pop” restaurants that will satisfy your craving to get out of the house. Local establishments like Handee Burger in Kingston, who is only accepting drive through orders, sells some of the tastiest burgers in Roane County. Their breakfast is not bad either. A little out of the way place called Club House Bar & Grill, located at the Rockwood Golf Course, offers belly filling simple food, at a reasonable price. They feature a $6 lunch, and dinner specials every weekday. I personally like the $.50 cent wings on Thursday night. They are served either bone-in or boneless with a wide variety of sauces. The Meat House in Midtown sells-you guessed it, MEAT! They also offer, according to their Facebook page “Chicago-style cooking at it’s best. Breakfast features

If their breakfasts are as good and the fare at Cadillac, I’m sure that it will be a big success. Firehouse Subs, a sub sandwich restaurant that offers hot steamed subs is anticipating the opening of a new location located in Harriman with a slated opening of early 2021. So many of you who are looking for a non-chain option to quench that epicurean desire, there are these and many more for you to try soon.
