n old country saying is spot-on for HC Sam Harrell’s current edition of Ennis football. Refuse to allow what-ifs or a virus to distract one from reaching their goal. Or as they say on the farm, “Don’t worry about the mule going blind, just load the wagon.” Intent on making a deep run in the Class 5A playoffs, the sense in E-Town is that “We’re going somewhere!” A year after losing a thrilling, fourth round, 43-36 overtime loss to topranked Aledo in the playoffs, the Lions are bent on avenging that setback. Six offensive starters return and eight carniverous first stringers on defense are also back in the fold. That puts stock in the hopes of earning a sixth crown. Harrell, 64 and feeling much younger, has confidence in All-District QB Collin Drake and several explosive targets, including Laylon Spencer, Karon Smith and 6’5 Skylan “Nemo” Simmons. Bookend tackles Dorion Strawn and Tommorrio Pace anchor the line for a handful of skilled runners. The teeth of this team is an agile, sideline-to-sideline group of ornery defenders who will be tough to beat. Jarveon Williams, Micheal Markgraf, Lazarus Becks, Deryous Stokes and Whodie Johnson up front and ‘Backers Caden Hubbard, Payton Chapman and Speedy Gonzales are quick to the ball. The secondary of De’Ivian “Dee” Johnson, Stephon Townsend, Dacoby Sterling and Devion Beasley are fleet-footed DB’s who cover as tight as a lid on a honey jar. There are many playmakers in the bunch, guys who want the ball. Watch for Dee Johnson to be among them. The bandwagon is filling up. Don Howard, the Voice of Ennis football at home games, is steady and unflappable. He has served as the PAA since 2004, when legendary Don Washburn passed the mic to him. n 11-game winning streak in 2019 included an 8-0 run through District 8-5A and a near upset of eventual state champion and No. 1 ranked Aledo in the playoffs. It has given Ennis hopes of an encore this fall. Should they go deeper in the post-season they will contend for a sixth crown as Kings of the Class 5A jungle. The Lions begin this year at No. 1, but have a tougher schedule. Facing six teams who had a winning mark in 2019 is steeper than last year’s Oval E’s, who met just four winners. HC Sam Harrell’s Lions open at Red Oak, ranked No. 9 in the state, then play at Fossil Ridge before the Battle of 287 at home against Waxahachie. The remainder of the games are in District 8-5A, starting with Greenville and Sulphur Springs. Hachie, Greenville and SS all own a one-game lead in the all-time series with Ennis. By taking all three in this “Equalizer” series, the Lions would even the won-lost mark against them. In Week Six, Ennis hosts North Forney, whose 15 starters back this year are the most in the league. Then comes an intriguing first-ever clash at Crandall, who rose up from 4A this year. Forney visits the Lions Den next, a week before the home finale with Royse City. The Bulldogs have lost both encounters to E-town since 2018, 26-7 and 38-21. Thanksgiving Friday is off. Ennis, who has defeated Corsicana in six consecutive years, closes at Tiger Stadium on Dec. 4. During the first five games, opponents’ records show a combined 21 wins a year ago. Down stretch the Lions’ foes had 35 wins in 2019. Those outings versus tougher caliber teams should be playoff tune-ups. By punching their ticket to the post-season, it will be nine years in a row.
