Welcome from County Judge Executive Gale Cowan Welcome to Adair County! We are home to almost 20,000 residents and happy to have you if you are just passing through or if you are considering locating here. We are home to Green River Lake and Holmes Bend Marina and only a short distance to Lake Cumberland and Dale Hollow State Parks.

Located in South Central Kentucky, the Louie B. Nunn Parkway runs through Adair County and we are situated directly between I-65 and I-75. We are also in the process of completing the Heartland Parkway, which will connect us to the Bluegrass Parkway. We are within two hours of Louisville, Lexington, and the capital of our Commonwealth, Frankfort, Kentucky.

Our proximity puts us in a prime location for economic growth and development. At the same time, we have the principles and work ethic of the small rural community we are.

We have seen tremendous growth over the last few years. Not only is our hospital growing by leaps and bounds after being purchased by T.J. Regional Health, but we have also seen the First Choice Immediate Care open its doors and become a major asset to our community. Our school campus is one of the most beautiful in the state. Our high school offers state of the art nursing and welding programs so our students are career ready when they graduate.

Welcome from Mayor Pam Hoots Welcome to Columbia, our hometown. We are proud of our historical significance, our downtown shopping district, and the wonderful people that make up our community. Columbia is located in south central Kentucky and has access from two exit ramps of the Louie B. Nunn Parkway, named after the former Kentucky governor who was from nearby Barren County.

As a rural community, we are extremely excited about the opportunities being given by the technical services at the local Adair County High School.

Their welding and farming programs are second to none. Lindsey Wilson College is located just off of the public square. The college is known for their premier sports programs and commitment to the students in our community that want to further their education.

We as a community are working to improve our parks systems for children and families. We realize that recreational opportunities are important for the

future health of our residents, as well as important for the recruitment of economic development.

We have several events through the year, and last year we held an event called, “Truck It Up,” a food truck festival that brought people from throughout the area into our town to raise funds for our city park equipment.

We are 218 years old. It is hard to believe. But, our assets as a community continue to be the same.

We have a beautiful downtown area filled with history, our friends and neighbors are friendly and glad to lend a hand, and most of all, we have pride in our community and our downtown. The country music band, Montgomery Gentry, is from Boyle County, less than an hour away, and they are known for their song, “My Town.” As the lyrics say, “where I was born, where I was raised, where I keep all my yesterdays.”

Welcome to Green River Lake

Stretching across 8,200 acres is one of Adair County’s most popular spots -- Green River Lake.

This body of water was formed when the Army Corps of Engineers constructed a dam in 1964 and is home to bass, bluegill, catfish and crappie.

Along the 1,331 acres of land surrounding the lake is the Green River Lake State Park, which opened in 1969.

Boat ramps surround the lake and within the state park is Holmes Bend Marina, which offers more attractions such as a beach, campground, 18-hole miniature golf course, a picnic area and a playground.

Rental cabins are available for overnight accommodations and a lodge provides rentals for its suites and meeting rooms.

The marina also hosts a restaurant, gift shop with lake essentials, a boat ramp and boat rentals. Sports and outdoor activities like basketball, volleyball and hiking can take place there, too. You can pretty much do it all at Green River Lake State Park.

One of the best ways to experience nature around Adair County is to hike.

There are 23 different trails available at Green River Lake State Park that locals travel often.

National Crappie Fishing Contest Around 400 fishermen and women are going to make a trip to Adair County in October this year in hopes of reeling in some crappie and cash in the 2020 Crappie USA Classic.

The tournament, on Oct. 22-24 at Green River Lake, awards over $125,000 to winners and is the largest cash payout ever on the lake.

The expected competitors are from around 25 different states and some come even a year in advance to begin practicing for the event.

Pre-fishing for the event begins the Saturday before. Competitors must qualify to fish and will have an entry fee based on whether they are in the professional or amateur division.

Weigh-in for the competition will be at Holmes Bend Marina, where spectators and television crews will be watching.

In addition to the monetary awards, two brand new Ranger fishing boats are given away.

All this combined, the 2020 Crappie USA Baker’s Grocery & Bait Shop Classic could create an economic impact of more 6104 Elkhorn Rd., Knifley than $1 million in Adair County.

Located within minutes of Green River and Lake Cumberland.

Adair County Sportsmen’s Club Adair County outdoorsmen and women can get plenty of practice and fellowship thanks to the Sportsmen’s Club.

This club has served Adair and surrounding counties for over 70 years.

The club got a new home this year with a 64-acre parcel located around six miles from town on Hwy. 704.

“It’s looking more like a park every day,” said Barry Jones, club president.

The property is heavily wooded and provides convenient wind blockage between the ranges. Once finished, the land will host 300, 100, 50 and 25-yard ranges, trap and short ranges and a clubhouse.

In addition to member activities, other local programs such as the Well Armed Women club and Adair County 4-H trap shooting use the property.

PARKS The Jim Blair Center is owned by the Adair County Fiscal Court and serves the community in a multitude of ways.

Located at 901 Hudson St., an outdoor walking track is a common place that locals visit for exercise and to take in nature.

A children’s playground is one of the largest in the county, a softball field can host community softball leagues, and the picnic shelter overlooks it all.

Indoors, half of the facility is home to the Adair County Senior Center and the other half received new hardwood last year and is used for basketball practice and rented for events such as birthday parties.

The Joe Johnson Little League Park has served the young athletes of Adair County for decades and underwent recent improvements from its owner, the City of Columbia. Located at 167 Doc Walker Rd., the park provides four fields, press boxes, restrooms and a concession stand to Adair County Little League athletes aged 3 to 12 and their families. Baseball and softball grace this park from April to June. Foot-

ball takes place elsewhere around August through November and basketball is held at the schools campus from November to February.

The Columbia City Park has been under constant updates in the last year to become one of the most accommodating parks in town. The park’s playground now holds handicap accessible equipment after the community came together to fundraise for the project. Its basketball court, picnic area and restrooms have undergone new paint and maintenance. A nearby pavilion serves as a great place for barbecues and family reunions. A children’s splash pad is proposed as part of several improvements planned at the park, which is located on Fairground Street.

The Roadside Park is yet another popular place for gatherings or just a relaxing day. Surrounded by tall trees, this park offers a playground and a picnic pavilion that a group of any size can enjoy. Owned by the City of Columbia, it is located 2.4 miles from Columbia on Hwy. 55 South.

Bob and Doris Holloway Health and Wellness Center For those who love staying active, the Holloway Health and Wellness Center might be one of their favorite spots in town.

The 73,232 sq. foot facility is on the Lindsey Wilson College campus at 653 Young St. and provides activities for both students and members from the community.

It mainly serves as a fitness gym that includes a weight room, a cardio deck, an indoor walking track, an aerobic and dance studio, a racquetball court, three basketball and volleyball courts, an indoor, eightlane swimming pool and recreation pool and a 40-person hot tub.

Group fitness classes are popular at the facility and HWC offers several different programs for children, including swimming lessons and outdoor and indoor summer camps.

Several membership options are available and the facility also accepts AARP Be Well supplement and the free insurance program “Silver Sneakers.”

The facility follows the LWC schedule for breaks. Academic year hours for the facility are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday.

Summer and break hours are 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Downtown Days Downtown Columbia is filled with the sounds and smells of festival fun on the second Saturday of October, an annual event known as Downtown Days. The day is filled with all types of vendors, crafts, games, live entertainment and a booming food court.

The festival is planned by the Renaissance Columbia committee and includes fun for all ages.

Attendees can visit throughout downtown and find local, homemade crafts, shop in local stores and listen to local residents perform on the stage of the “Rusty Nail.”

The historic courthouse is surrounded by “Squarecrows” crafted by local businesses, clubs and organizations that are the spirit of fall festivities.

As dusk falls, the festival comes to a close each year when a national recording artist hits the stage. In years past, Diamond Rio, Sammy Kershaw and many others have performed.

The 2020 Downtown Days festival has been canceled due to COVID-19.

Fun Times on the Farm Homeplace on Green River brings together agriculture and community year round. While the working farm is visited throughout the year, two major events help earn Homeplace the designation of being Kentucky’s largest outdoor classroom.

In the spring, Plow Days brings the community together to watch more than 25 horse and mule plow teams turn the soil and prepare for the growing season. Over 70 exhibitors and vendors attended the event in 2019.

The Fall Heritage Festival takes place in September on the farm. The event features vendors, petting zoos, children’s rides, demonstrations, reenactments and live music entertainment.

Due to COVID-19, the 2020 Fall Heritage Festival has been canceled.

Revisit Knifley Knifley, a small community in northern Adair County, reunites each year on the second Saturday of September. Revisit Knifley is an event for locals or anyone who would like to learn more about the area.

History is shared, festivities are enjoyed and friends are made.

Car shows, wagon rides, children activities and vendor booths are usually always part of the day.

One of the favorite activities is to view and reminisce at the historical displays in the former Knifley school building.

A firework display ends the homecoming with bright colors shining down on the small community home to many in Adair County.

Christmas in Columbia Santa can be spotted in downtown Columbia on the first Saturday in December thanks to Christmas in Columbia. The Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce has hosted this event for over 25 years.

Local businesses and crafters have merchandise in local shops and public buildings around Columbia for those interested in Christmas shopping locally.

One of the hot spots that day each year is a children’s carnival at Lindsey Wilson College, where more vendors, live entertainment, bounce houses and children’s crafts are around.

The night ends with the notable themed parade to spread the Christmas cheer.

New Fairgrounds The Adair County Fair has a new home in the 10.23 acres of land that was recently donated by a local bank.

The Bank of Columbia donated the land, located southeast of Industrial Park Road, in early October 2019 to bring the tradition of the full county fair back to the community.

The former fairgrounds were sold to Lindsey Wilson College in 2016 and since then, only pageants, livestock shows and floral hall contests have been held for the Adair County fair.

The return of the fair will be great for the local economy and for the entertainment of the community.

Property development was halted due to COVID19, but the Adair County Fair Association eventually plans to bring in a full carnival, racetracks, pageants and more to the new fairgrounds.

Businesses thrive as residents ‘Shop Local’ Adair County takes pride in its small businesses and “shop local” culture.

While they’ve always been around, small businesses have really begun to pop up both out in the county and within the city.

In particular, Columbia’s public square is full of small, specialty shops – everything from jewelry to clothing to music equipment can be bought there.

“To the Nines” is a local event held on the first Friday of most months in Columbia where participating businesses on and off the square stay open until 9 p.m. to allow area shoppers more time to browse the stores and visit with one another.

Around 20 businesses participate in the event, which is sponsored by the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce. Mayor Pamela Hoots describes it as a social activity for Adair County.

Many small businesses have renovated their stores and have added curb appeal to the area by doing so.

Gypsy JoLee “It’s been as easy as owning a small business could be,” said Jessica Hatcher about her small business venture in Adair County. “Without the support of the community, this wouldn’t be possible. We’ve been incredibly blessed.”

Hatcher is the owner of Gypsy JoLee, where she makes handmade jewelry and puts her own twist on shirts, bags, signs and home décor.

She began Gypsy JoLee in 2014 by selling manufactured jewelry and then began making some herself a couple of months later.

By 2016, she was marketing all handmade products and to her own surprise, in 2017 she was able to make it her full-time job because of the success she had wholesaling to stores locally.

Her business grew and Hatcher marketed wholesale to around 450 stores in well over 30 states, specifically to states in the Midwest and South.

Wholesaling has kept her the busiest, but she also sells from her social media Gypsy JoLee pages.

Despite all this, Hatcher remains humble, considering herself a “micro-business” and doing all her magic from the basement of her house.

She gets help from a few family members and friends. Unfortunately the COVID-19 pandemic has limited who can help her, but she’s managing just fine.

Hatcher’s merchandise looks unlike anything else around.

“I really try to think outside the box and I want to do what I’ve not seen done yet,” said Hatcher.

“For the most part, I try to think of something that I want or would wear.”

She always remembers why she is successful and gives credit where it’s due in her product.

“Wherever I can on our tags and bags, I try to have ‘Jesus loves y’all’ on the back just to spread the love,” said Hatcher. “I feel like this is very God-led. I feel like whenever we started doing this adairvoice.com • Discover Adair 2020

from the beginning, it’s something God told me to do.”

Gypsy JoLee has more in store – literally.

Hatcher is transitioning to sell retail only and a storefront next to her house will open soon. She believes she may pick wholesaling back up eventually but for now wants to concentrate on expanding her retail market.

As always, ideas for new merchandise are still flowing.

“I would like to get to the point where we could do some wild furniture, like cowhide chairs and fringe.”

New Retail Adair County has witnessed extraordinary business growth for several years now, and the trend continues.

Happy Cow Café now serves breakfast and lunch in the Pinewood Shopping Center. Freshmade sandwiches, soups, coffee and sweets are some of the delicious items found on their menu.

JSP Outdoors is a fishing guide service, as well as lure developers and designers with a shop full of fishing equipment on Campbellsville Road.

Unity Chiropractic serves all in the community – both humans and animals. They specialize in human, canine and equine chiropractic needs and will make home visits for animals in need.

H & H Lumber is a concentration yard where wood can be brought to the yard, air-dried and later kiln-dried. Custom work is part of their specialization, as well.

Opened in February by three local businessmen, Dr. Charles Giles, Chaz Giles and Josh Kemp, the spacious convenience store has been a local hit and a new stop for travelers.

Doc’s brings Shell brand fuel and a diesel canopy for diesel exhaust fluid, which is unique locally.

Broaster’s Chicken is also new to the area and is served at a hot bar inside the market, along with a breakfast bar, drinks and convenience items.

Perhaps what they are most known for is their fresh salads that can be made to order.

One retail area that continues to show growth in Columbia is often referred to as “New Columbia.”

The land was first developed for retail use in 2009 when Walmart relocated. Land prices draw newcomers Property values for Adair County’s 435 square miles are competitive with property all over Kentucky and the United States.

The county’s square footage includes 13,531 individual parcels of land and a tax base of $692 million.

The average cost of a general family style home with 1,200-2,000 square feet is $90,000 - $200,000.

Average cost for a 2,000-4,500 square foot home ranges from $200,000 to $450,000.

The price of building lots varies, depending on layout and location.

Around the county, building lots have a price from $1,500 to $15,000, but a lake area lot in northern Adair County could range from $8,000 to $25,000.

Farms range from $1,000-$7,500 per acre and pasture and woods on farms affect the value. Location and utilities also play a factor for larger prospective farming operations.

County Services The Adair County Annex is located right in downtown Columbia at 424 Public Square and is the go-to place for the majority of county government business.

Inside the annex, one can find: – The county government, which is operated as the Adair County Fiscal Court by Adair County Judge Executive Gale Cowan and seven magistrates.

Like all offices in the annex, they welcome anyone to stop by to ask questions or discuss the county.

The Adair County Judicial Center has been serving the courts of Adair County for ten years now.

The historic Adair County Courthouse was closed in 2010 and the Judicial Center was erected just down the road at 201

Campbellsville St. Inside is the Adair County Circuit Clerk’s office, where residents can test for their driving permit, receive their driver’s license, pay court fees and view public record documents.

District Court under Judge Michael Loy and the second floor courtroom hosts Circuit Court with Judge Judy Vance-Murphy.

Support the earth by recycling The Adair County Recycling Center is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, where residents can bring their recycling products that are then sorted and sold to a buyer.

A recycling trailer is also left at the center for after hours use.

Adair County’s center accepts most recycling except for products with number 5, 7 or no number or recycle symbol at all. They also must have newspaper inserts sorted with other paper products and separately from the newsprint.

In addition to recycling, the center also has a secure paper shredder in operation during the facility’s hours.

Shelter helps find homes for pets in need of family Strays have a place to stay until they find their forever home at the Green River Animal Shelter.

Several hundred animals are adopted by loving families each year through the shelter.

These families often find these pets on the Green River Animal Shelter Facebook page, where director Tammy Campbell often posts photos of the animals that are available.

People have travelled from other states to adopt a cat or dog from the shelter after seeing it online.

The shelter gladly welcomes donations from the community,

such as food and cleaning supplies.

The most needed items are pet food, leashes and collars, dish soap, Lysol and bleach.

City of Columbia Services Columbia City Hall is right off the public square at 116 Campbellsville St. and is home to City of Columbia offices and business.

History Thanks to the years of research into its history, much is known about what led to the creation of this beautiful county today.

According to An Adair County, Kentucky History Vol. 1 compiled by Michael C. Watson, there is evidence of previous Native American inhabitants long before the first settlers came to Adair County.

The first documented people in Adair County in 1769 were known as Long Hunters and a subdivision in Adair County is named after them today.

Col. William Casey established the permanent settlement of Adair County with around 30 other men. Adair County’s Col. William Casey Elementary School was named after this founder and is where thousands of students began their education here from 1960 to 2013.

It is also speculated that pioneer Daniel Boone stopped through here sometime in his journey through the commonwealth.

Many other interesting stories come from the early days of Adair County.

Native Americans travelled in and out, a diamond found in the county now resides in the Smithsonian Museum and though never confirmed, many detailed stories tell that it was bandit Jesse James and his comrades, the James Gang, that robbed the Bank of Columbia on

April 29, 1872.

The Courthouse that still stands in the middle of Columbia’s public square today was built in 1884. It was placed on the National Register of Historical places in 1974 and housed government agencies until 2010 when the offices moved to the judicial center on Campbellsville Street.

A unique clock tower is placed on top of the building and has been an iconic symbol of the community. Many items such as stationary, clothing and personal items have the symbol and promote the community.

The courthouse is still maintained by county government and is always admired by visitors and locals alike.

The Adair County Heritage Association oversees the inclusion and remembrance of Adair County’s history.

Janice Holt Giles House Janice Holt Giles let the beauty of her Knifley home and the Green River area inspire her as she wrote an array of novels that are still popular today.

The local Giles Society was founded to preserve the legacy of Henry and Janice Holt Giles, as well as the literature legacy she and other Adair County authors left behind.

On the first Saturday of October, the Giles Society provides an annual Arts and Crafts Day exhibiting local authors and craftsmen at the Giles log home, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Funds are raised to continue preservation and promotion of the historical site.

Daniel Trabue-Russell House

COMMUNITY

Another historic piece of property in the center of Columbia is the Trabue-Russell House, the former home of one of Columbia’s founders, Daniel Trabue.

He built his home to overlook the town square in 1823. It was later purchased by James Montgomery Russell.

Today, it preserves the history of Adair County as a museum.

It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was featured on Tour120, a heritage program that raises awareness of historic preservation in Kentucky.

It is owned by the the City of Columbia and is available for private or community events.

Beautiful greenery, flowers and views can be observed outside the home, which are tended to by the Adair County Garden Club. A rose garden is cared for in memory of Julia Miller Horton, the great-granddaughter of James Russell.

Families have purchased flower bushes in memory of loved ones to be planted in this garden, and it is taken care of by Garden Club member Mary Anne Loy.

Adair County Public Library Just off the square at 307 Greensburg Street is the Adair County Public Library.

The quote, “Whatever the cost of our libraries, the cost is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation,” by Walter Cronkite hangs near the front entrance of the library.

The Adair County Public Library offers an abundance of resources for people of all ages.

Besides the thousands of books it has available for free, the library has online book access, children’s programs year-round, free wi-fi and access to computers, printing and faxing.

Another major asset of the local library is its local history and genealogy departments.

People from around the world have visited the Adair County Public Library to study in its genealogy department.

The library is building a new addition solely for the genealogy and local history department that will hold its files, storage, a conference room and restrooms.

A Farming Community Agriculture continues to be the leading economic sector in Adair County and remains a viable business opportunity for the community.

Adair County farmers produced $69.3 million in agriculture commodities, according to the USDA 2017 agricultural census. There are 1,816 producers involved in producing food and fiber products.

More than 40,000 cattle graze the countryside of Adair County and the county ranks 10th in the state for beef cattle and third for dairy cattle.

Beef and dairy sales both rounded out at $13.2 million, according to the latest census.

The variety of agricultural commodities produced in the county has expanded in recent years.

There has been an increase of poultry farms, which has become the largest source of agriculture income in Kentucky. The poultry industry experienced a $10 million increase in receipts in 2017 alone.

Adair County row crop farmers have grown exponentially, especially soybean growers. From 2012 to 2017, soybean acres increased over 8,000 acres with 13,016 total acres. Hay acreage has increased over the county with a total of 36,392 acres.

Adair County farmers have been involved in state extension service testing plots. Most recently, fields in the county were tested to see if drone fungicide application is suitable for farmers and if drone applicaiton helps offset reduced yields due to disease.

The Adair County agribusiness sector continues to grow to support the local, regional and state agriculture industry. These businesses are not only essential to farmers but allow for job opportunities to our citizens.

Farmers’ Market Citizens of Adair and surrounding counties have the opportunity to buy farm fresh products from two separate markets in Columbia.

The Farmers’ Market on the Square is a Kentucky Proud market that has excelled over the years. It is located across from the Adair County Justicial Center on Merchant Street.

Each Saturday morning from April to October, farmers and producers are ready to serve an array of fruits, vegetables and products that are all local.

It has become a staple for its variety of offerings that include beef, poultry, homemade bread, peaches, pulled pork sandwiches and crafts.

The Homeplace on Green River Located just 13 miles north of Columbia sits over 250 acres used as the state’s largest outdoor classroom, the Homeplace on Green River.

This farm is being restored and serves as a constant reminder for the role agriculture played in our past and continues to play in our lives. Residents from Adair, Green and Taylor counties serve on a board of directors with a desire to promote rural America through conservation, education and economic opportunities that arise from agritourism.

The Homeplace on Green River has registered and secured the name “Kentucky’s Outdoor Classroom” with Kentucky’s Secretary of State; the Kentucky Senate confirmed that role for Homeplace on Green River in March 2016.

There are over five miles of walking trails on the

Tebbs Bend/Green River Nature Area of the farm.

On the trails, restored Blue Heron Wetlands, forests and prairies where wood ducks, cranes, eagles, wild turkeys, beaver, deer, otter, muskrat and many other species of birds and animals may be seen.

The Homeplace on Green River is leased to local farmers growing corn, soy beans and hay, and the Homeplace board works with Kentucky’s Department of Agriculture and several other councils to ensure it is home for modern, sustainable agriculture.

The Adair County school system is constantly making efforts to grow, adapt and make ready for its students’ futures.

The district’s mission statement is to “prepare all students with the self-discipline and academic proficiency necessary to be contributing citizens in an everchanging society.”

They’ve proven their commitment by the matchless improvements and successes throughout the four schools in the district.

Adair County Primary Center, the newest school having opened in 2013, provides education for preschool through second grade.

Adair County Elementary School serves third grade through fifth grade. Adair County Middle School provides education for sixth through eighth grades and Adair County High School offers ninth through twelfth grades.

Over 2,600 students are taught and almost 400 people are employed through this school district.

All of the schools are conveniently located on the same campus, along with the Adair County Board of Education and school bus garage.

Weaving between the schools are two football fields, a softball

field and a baseball field, tennis courts and an agriculture barn and fields.

The campus entrance has a gate built by the ACHS welding students and the entire campus sees constant maintenance on the buildings and grounds.

LWC: Campus on the grow The highlights for the 2019-20 academic year at Lindsey Wilson College are a direct reflection of the sustained focus of the faculty and the leadership of the administrative team and staff at LWC. From advances in alumni engagement to national recognition of LWC’s academic programs and athletic teams, Lindsey Wilson is demonstrating the transformative power of a values-centered education.

The fall 2019 freshman class consisted of more than 600 new students with a total enrollment of 2,519. This number includes the highest enrollment through 52

LWC’s online school and educational outreach partnerships. Spring 2020 enrollment was the highest ever in the history of the 117-year-old liberal arts institution.

For the first time since LWC’s nursing program launched in 2009, Lindsey Wilson nursing graduates posted a 100 percent pass rate on the NCLEX-RN national licensure examination for the academic year 2018-19. In addition, LWC’s nursing program was ranked among the top 10 nursing schools in Kentucky by nurse.org. The nationally recognized website bases its

rankings on a school’s reputation, tuition and pass rate on the national licensure exam.

For the second consecutive year, a group of LWC doctoral students were awarded first place at the American Counseling Association Conference and Expo for their submission in a national ethics essay competition. Doctoral students from all over the country compete each year for the prestigious award.

Kentucky to bring new opportunities to area students.

LWC will offer a variety of fullyonline, four-year degree programs to UCSK, as well as a master’s program in counseling and a MBA program. Under the agreement, students complete half of the degree at SCC’s tuition rate and the other half of the bachelor’s degree from LWC. Students will remain on SCC’s campus but will have full access to LWC institutional services such as admissions, registration, advising and remote library access. LWC is the first private college to join the University Center of Southern Kentucky.

Lindsey Wilson’s championship-winning athletic programs continue to reach the

highest levels of excellence in the classroom and in competition. In only the 10th season since the reintroduction of LWC football, the program made it to the semi-finals of the NAIA playoffs ending the season with a 12-1 record.

For the eighth consecutive year, Lindsey Wilson captured the MidSouth Conference President’s Cup and finished third in the Learfield Directors’ Cup standings marking the college’s eighth-straight top-five finish.

Several Lindsey Wilson College student-athletes achieved individual national championship status during the 2019-20

academic year. Most notably, junior wrestler Brandon Reed from Louisville, Ky., claimed his second straight NAIA National Championship in early March; and freshman Calvin Coatzee from Durban, South Africa won the first-ever NAIA National Championship for the men’s swimming program.

Cumberland Family Medical Cumberland Family Medical, Inc. first opened Adair Family Medical Center on Campbellsville Road in 2008 and expanded to give Adair County its first urgent treatment center in 2017.

Cumberland Family Medical also provides a Healthy Kids Clinic at the Adair County school system.

Since 2014, the Healthy Kids Clinic has been active in providing primary care, pediatrics and oral 56

and mental health care to all students in all four Adair County schools.

Even during school closure for the pandemic, the Healthy Kids Clinic was open at the Adair County High School gymnasium during weekdays for all students and students’ families.

Adair County Health Department Being there for the health education, prevention and treatment of the entire county isn’t an easy job, but the Adair County Health Department commits to it and is always finding new ways to reach the community.

The dedicated department is one of the ten counties under the Lake Cumberland District Health Department.

Following the Department of Public Health’s guidelines, the health department gives the public free or minimally priced access to family planning, well-child exams, immunizations, medical screenings, the WIC nutritional program and the HANDS program.

Health educators visit the schools to teach the most vulnerable in the county about healthy lifestyles and offer citizens of all ages the right classes and trainings they need for their health.

Environmental services, including restaurant inspections and emergency preparedness, stem from the health department, as well.

The emergency preparedness team has been activley involved in working to limit the spread of COVID-19 in Adair County and the 10-county Lake Cumberland district.
