The Transamerica Bike Trail winds its way through our county with hundreds of cyclists biking through and taking advantage of our wonderful assets like fishing , canoeing, hiking trails, birding and more. You might like to take a self-guided day trip on the Kentucky Holy Land Tour to see historic churches and cemeteries throughout Washington, Marion and Nelson counties. Do not miss the opportunity to visit and walk across our newly restored 1871 Mt. Zion Covered Bridge, the longest multi-span covered bridge in Kentucky. Places to See Lincoln Legacy Museum 111 N. Cross Street.

birthplace, but some folks here will tell you he was actually born in Washington County while his home in Hodgenville was still being built.

The Lincoln Legacy is one that’s shrouded in mystery, but one thing’s for sure, it all began right here in Washington County.

Nancy Hanks and Thomas Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln’s parents, moved from Virginia to Washington County in 1782 as children. Thomas Lincoln’s grandfather, Abraham Lincoln senior, purchased more than 300 acres of land in what’s known today as the Pleasant Grove area, to settle with his family. Abraham Lincoln senior also brought Thomas’ siblings, Mordecai, Josiah, Mary and Ann Lincoln to join him on the new homestead.

Nancy Hanks came to Kentucky after her mother, Lucy Hanks, sent her and several siblings to live with the Berry family. She would grow up with the Lincolns because the Berrys were close friends with the Lincoln family.

Over the years, Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks would grow close and eventually marry on June 12, 1806. After eloping, the Lincolns moved to what was then Hardin County. Abraham Lincoln would go on to call Hodgenville his

After spending seven years in Hodgenville, the Lincolns would move to Indiana. Nancy Hanks Lincoln would die two years later from milk sickness while helping a neighboring family also suffering from the illness. Thomas Lincoln would remarry a year later.

As a young adult, Abraham Lincoln moved to Illinois where he would eventually teach himself about law, become a lawyer, senator, and eventually the 16th President of the Untied States. Despite having deep roots in Washington County, he only received one vote in the county during the 1860 election.

of the 1782 cabin and blacksmith shop where Lincoln’s father, Thomas, was reared and learned his trade. The home of Mordecai Lincoln, the president’s favorite uncle, is also here, along with split-rail fences and pioneer furniture that portray the rugged pioneer life.

This year the park will celebrate its 81st anniversary. Near the celebrated historical sites, visitors can relax and enjoy a picnic area that includes a shelter, grills and playground. Fish for bass and channel catfish at the Lincoln Homestead Lake, which extends to 7.6 acres.

A fun, family adventure awaits at the 18 hole disc golf course that takes visitors through open holes, tunnel shots, doglegs and more! Discs are available to rent or purchase at the Golf Pro Shop and Gift Shop near the Museum.

World-class golf in a historic setting: Lincoln Homestead State Park was designed nearly 50 years ago by Perry Maxwell, who designed such courses as Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas – home of golf legend Ben Hogan – and Tulsa, OK’s Southern Hills Country Club, site of the 2007 PGA Championship. With Bermuda grass fairways and bent grass greens, pristine lakes and sweeping vistas, the golf course offers four tee locations for golfers of all levels.

Historic Holy Sites Kentucky’s t k ’ Holy H l L Land: d Have a Religious Experience www.kyholyland.org Have a religious experience in Kentucky’s original Holy Land of Springfield, Bardstown and Lebanon. Churches, motherhouses, heritage centers, memorials, farms and other historic places form a veritable Hallelujah Trail of religious establishments.

Buy monk-made cheese and chocolates, attend a live choral performance, walk through the Stations of the Seven Dolors (Sorrows) and find a book of poetry written by Thomas Merton.

Take a pilgrimage to the land where the first priest to have been ordained in America, Stephen Badin, settled in 1795, and where the “First Bishop of the West” came to shepherd the first inland diocese in the United States.

Saint Catharine Motherhouse/Dominican Sisters of Peace 2645 Bardstown Road Saint Catharine, Kentucky 40061 859-336-9303 In 1822, nine women from St. Rose Parish formed the first congregation of Dominican Sisters in the United States, near Cartwright Creek. The current St. Catharine Motherhouse was constructed in 1904 after a fire destroyed the original location.

Located on the grounds is the 700-acre St. Catharine Farm, the Motherhouse is a member of Kentucky Proud, whose 300 herd of beef cattle are non-ASH (no antibiotics, steroids or hormones).

Springfield Presbyterian Church 140 Main Street Springfield 859-336-3601 Springfield Presbyterian Church was founded in 1788 and was one of the first churches organized in Washington County, four years before Kentucky became a state and Washington became a county. The Reverend Terah Templin organized the church near the site where the present church stands on Main Street in Springfield.

St. Rose Catholic Church St. Rose Catholic Church 868 Loretto Road Springfield, Kentucky 40069 859-336-3121 Founded in 1806, St. Rose Priory was the first foundation of the Dominican Friars (Order of Preachers) in the United States.

The friars, who came from England, established St. Thomas of Aquinas College (18121828), the first Catholic educational institute west of the Alleghenies. One of the famous names on the college’s roster is Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy.

The priory served as the novitiate for the St. Joseph Province intermittently for nearly 150 years. The original Tudor Gothic Church, built in 1809, is now the sanctuary of the current church.

The frontal addition was constructed in 1855.

Idle Hour Park 1075 Highway 555 Springfield, Kentucky 40069 859-336-5448 Idle Hour Park celebrates its 45-year anniversary in 2021 and has been a go-to spot for recreation in Washington County since its creation. Tennis courts, baseball diamonds, a softball and Little League field, T-ball fields, plus basketball, volleyball, pickleball, bike repair station, a batting cage facility and recently installed exercise equipment bring sports buffs out to Springfield’s Idle Hour Park, a beautiful, well-equipped greenspace that also has a paved walking-jogging trail, playgrounds, concessions stands and picnic areas with shelters that are open to the public.

The park is also part of the Trans-America Bike Trail that runs from Oregon to Virginia. The park is connected to downtown by way of the three-mile Footprints Arboretum Trail. Parking is free. Camping is allowed. Call 859-336-5448 for more information.

Willisburg Lake 11528 Highway 555 Willisburg, Kentucky 40078 Are you longing to get out onto the water? Drop your line in this manmade reservoir for largemouth bass, shell crackers, bluegill, white crappie, yellow bullhead and catfish. Created in 1971, the 126-acre Willisburg Lake is a sparkling body of water that beckons outdoor lovers. With depths in excess of 60 feet, the lake teems with fish and provides a natural habitat to a variety of wildlife, including whitetail deer, Canadian geese, mallards, eastern wild turkey, blue herons, turtles and more. Enjoy its 10 miles of natural shoreline, launching ramp, boat rentals and a shop stocked with snacks, ice and bait. Camping enthusiasts will find primitive and tent camping, as well as seasonal RV camping.

While we offer opportunities for all ages, our educational programs are the perfect way to get your kids involved in the arts. We offer engaging, and diverse training in all area of the theatre. Giving your student experience with working industry professionals and guest artists.

Theatre is a great way to teach empathy, teamwork, collaboration, and confidence, which are great things to have, and it always looks nice for a college or job application!

Ready for some fun Sorghum rghum Festival When fall is in the air that means one thing, it is time for the Sorghum Festival.

The festival normally held the first weekend of October has a variety of things to offer festival goers and vendors as well.

What started out in 1977 as a Fall Flea Market here in Springfield soon blossomed into a festival focused on sorghum. Talks began after that October with the Chamber of Commerce of expanding the event due to the amount of vendors that turned out and the weather was not on their side according to the October Springfield Sun story in 1977. Through the years the festival has carried a few different titles but has come back to the original name of The Sorghum Festival in 2014. With the name

change came a festival that has heavily embraced its heritage, celebrating the long history that Washington County has with the high-sprouting grain.

Last year The Sorghum Festival offered a 5K, a Prince and Princess contest, a parade, a corn-hole competition, classic car cruise-in, and a Frog Jumping Frenzy competition.

This event also has coincided with the Jim Beam Barbecue Classic Cook-Off, which is a competition that showcases some of the best barbecue cookers in the nation.

Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Join the Holy Rosary Church as it hosts the annual celebration in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Every year, community members are welcomed to participate in a walk/motorcade that begins at the Washington County Industries Building and takes a scenic route to Holy Rosary Church.

Washington County superintendent Robin Cochran has provided a school bus for the past few years for members of the community who wish to march but are unable to do so. The march will continue to be in city limits so those without access to transportation are in walking distance and can join. The celebration ends with a presentation from renowned guests and a community choir from multiple churches.

For the 2020 celebration, Springfield welcomed the featured guest speaker Marcus Ray, president of the Kentucky NAACP. Organizer Tyrone Burton said he encourages all churches and people to come together for the celebration. “We would like for the whole community to be involved in the program and march,” Burton said. “It’s not only a march for our African American churches, it’s for all denominations. We’re all in this together.”

Empty Bowl Supper Tired of this cold and dreary winter?

Well, you’re in luck. The annual Empty Bowl Supper in Springfield warms the winter with homemade soups, breads and desserts as a fundraiser for New Pioneers for a Sustainable Future. Every year on the last Friday of February, about 100 community members gather, and local artists and entertainers showcase their works, including music to poetry to classical whistling.

The event costs $20 per person, which encompasses food and drinks. Handcrafted soup bowls by local potters are available for purchase to have supper from and take home at the end of the meal. Each bowl is donated and glazed with its own unique, beautiful style. People can also bring their own beer or wine to the event. The dinner is usually served from 5:30-8 p.m.

BPW Wine Tasting This annual scholarship fundraiser event by the local Business and Professional Women’s chapter in Springfield lets guests try a variety of wines.

The Springfield BPW Club is one of the larger clubs in the Kentucky Federation of Business and Professional Women - a state federation that promotes equity for all women in the workplace through advocacy, education, and information.

KFBPW is a powerful network of working women seeking to advance their career goals, earn higher salaries, build stronger business, achieve pay equity and equal opportunities, and establish rewarding careers. Women and men are invited to join! Dues are $35 per year, and the club sponsors scholarships and gives donations to community causes particularly those that promote or affect women and their families.

Last year BPW gave over $15,000 in scholarships and donations to charitable and community organizations!

The only fundraiser is the Annual Wine Tasting and Auction held in downtown Springfield which has become a favorite community fund-raiser and social event which BPW plans to host again in May of 2021.

Bourbon Bike Ride 2020 was to be the fifth year for the Bourbon Bike Ride. Riders enjoy a day on the road with 100 percent of the registration fee going to WHAS Crusade for Children.

Visit 3 distilleries while driving Kentucky’s most beautiful scenic byways. Free t-shirts are given to the first 50 riders to sign up. Event barrel heads are drawn as door prizes.

Unfortunately, the 2020 ride was canceled, but organizers hope the event will return to raise funds for the Crusade in 2021.

African-American Heritage Festival On the first Friday of every August in Springfield, Washington County comes together to celebrate the area’s African-American heritage.

Each year, the festival has a different theme that celebrates some aspect of the local African-American citizens’ heritage, varying from topics like local military personnel, athletes, Motown and last year’s theme, a focus on past and present African-American churches in Washington County.

The festival, now in its 16th year, has become one of the town’s most popular events, with Nell Haydon, director of Springfield’s Main Street Renaissance

program, estimating that it is probably the largest festival Springfield has.

She added that the festival is one of the most important — and most fun — events in the area.

“It’s a fun time for everyone, and every year, we get to document a little more about our African American heritage here,” Haydon said.

The festivities typically begin with the opening of food vendors one hour prior to the annual parade (a crowd favorite), which is then followed by a free concert.

This year’s event was canceled, but look for it again in Aug. 2021. For more info, visit www.springfieldkytourism. com.

Ice Skating Bundle up and bring your friends for Christmas Ice Skating on Saturday, December 12. The fun is free and ice skates are provided, so bring family and friends behind the Judicial Center to glide on ice. The rink will open from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., and at noon the rink will be open for students or adults with special needs and their families/care providers who may be more comfortable skating in

a smaller crowd. This event will follow future state mandates and regulations.

The Manton Music Jam is a large country/southern rock music festival held in July in Manton, Ky. Folks come from far and wide for the event, which is open to the public. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and a cool drink then kick back and enjoy.

A great way to spend a summer day in rural Washington County, Meet up with friends or make new ones all while enjoying a day of memorable music.

The 2020 Jam was canceled due to COVID but is sure to return in the summer of 2021.

Let the Spirits Move You Experience historical holy lands and world-class bourbon distilleries firsthand on the three-day tour of Holy Land and Bourbon Trail. Back in 1785, Roman Catholics settled in Nelson, Marion and Washington counties from Maryland, creating the cradle of Catholicism known as “The Kentucky Holy Land�.

The tour observes many of the churches and sacred places established by the pioneer Catholics, such as St. Rose Proto-Priory and Church, the Loretto Motherhouse, Our Lady of Gethsemani, and the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral.

In between Holy Land sites, visitors also experience the beautiful grounds of Makers Mark Distillery, family-owned Heaven Hill Distillery, and end the tour with everything Bourbon Trail has to offer.

Art Exhibits The Gallery at the Opera House began in 2018 and has since flourished under local artists who show their beautiful art. About once a month, a new exhibit is displayed at the Gallery, bringing diversity to our community. Opening receptions take place the first Friday of the month unless otherwise noted. Since its beginning two years ago, roughly 20 exhibitors have been welcomed to the Opera House. From photography to formal art to pottery to stained glass, the Gallery offers a wide variety of art. Currently, the exhibit and receptions are on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic until further notice.

Farmers Market at the Depot Come get some fruits and vegetables at the seasonal farmers market. Don’t forget to take home some Kentucky Proud products.

The market is open from June until September on Saturday mornings and Wednesday evening with vendors of produce, craft items, and so much more.

Bourbon Chase The Bourbon Chase is a 200-mile relay race that celebrates Kentucky’s singular sensations of bourbon, horse country and beautiful vistas.

Take a 200-mile journey across the Bluegrass State, pedaling along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® to see historic bourbon distilleries with their rickhouses rising into the skyline and distinctive aroma filling the air; Kentucky’s fabled

horse country with its rolling landscapes bracketed by miles of fencing; and charming small towns with their Main Street USA streetscapes and storefronts.

Camp Calvary A Christian youth camp located between Mackville and Willisburg, Calvary Camp was to celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2020. Unfortunately, COVID canceled all group activities at the camp in 2020.

The camp provides activities for kids kindergarten through college in

central Kentucky and beyond. Camp Calvary also offers a retreat center, provides sleeping arrangements for 150 campers and can accommodate 400-600 guests for day events.

Camp Calvary is undergoing some construction and looks forward to welcoming guests back to the facility soon.

Communities Springfield Nearly 3,000 people call Springfield home, and it’s no wonder why. This friendly community, which is the county seat of Washington County, offers small-town living with access to larger cities like Louisville and Lexington. Springfield was established in 1793, and is located in the south-central part of the county. U.S. 150 connects Springfield to Danville (26 miles) in the east and Bardstown (17 miles) in the west.

Willisburg was officially incorporated in 1965, and is governed by a mayor and four city commissioners. Visitors to the community can enjoy the lake, which offers fishing, boating and camping for both recreational vehicles as well as tents.

Fredericktown Located on U.S. 150 West, just 10 minutes outside of Springfield, Fredericktown is a lovely community nestled at the foot of several hills and lies in the picturesque valley where the Beech Fork River meets Cartwright’s Creek. Some of the best farmland in Kentucky is found here. The community also offers a park with a walking path, softball field, and the Holy Trinity Church and its community center, which are frequently used by residents and visitors.

Mackville Mackville is a sixth-class city chartered in 1818 that is located in the northeastern part of Washington County. This community is home to about 200 residents. Mackville features a number of historic churches on its Main Street, as well as a community center created in the location of the old Mackville School. The community center offers a walking trail for exercise, as well as a weekly meeting of senior citizens each Wednesday for lunch.

Does Washington County really have something for everyone? We like to think so, beautiful scenery, a great entertainment and art scene, fresh local cuisine, rich history, and so much more can be found in the first county in Kentucky.

Its focus on technical careers has made it an instrumental tool for local industries and its impact on Washington County only continues to grow.
