Carter’s Store serves up bologna, community outreach, & a slice of local history article and photos by

Deep in the southwestern corner of Campbell County stands an old country store. It’s been there for a while— since long before the town of Altavista came into existence, in fact. Until last year, it looked as if the store was fated to be swept up on the dust heap of history, an abandoned relic of local life from yesteryear.

Abandoned, that is, until the Goldsmith family stepped in, bought the boarded-up building, and re-launched the old country store. And so it came to pass that on July 6, 2019, Carter’s General Store, Deli, & Outpost had its grand reopening, 140 years after its original debut.

It had been a lifelong dream of Kyle Goldsmith to take an active role in the store that his great-grandfather had established in 1879. Three generations of his family had run the store—great-grandfather Lewis Crawford “LC” Carter, Grandfather Charlie Lewis “CL” Carter, and un-

cle Calvin Perrow “CP” Carter—each until his death.

Following Uncle Calvin’s passing in 2008 and the sale of the store, it looked like Kyle’s dream was not to be.

“I’ve wanted to be a part of this store since I was 12 years old,” Goldsmith related. “I distinctly remember many times during my youth coming in and buying a Pepsi and a candy bar and wondering what it would

be like to be in Uncle Calvin’s position, the proprietor of Carter’s General Store. I felt that way because I recognized the respect he had in the community.”

Goldsmith recounts how in 2000, he left behind his career in Northern Virginia and moved back home to Leesville with his wife and children. “I was very moved

by God to do so. I had lost focus on my purpose in life and decided to come back here and start over.” From

10 • Discover Campbell County 2020 that point on, he had a strong desire to purchase and run the store.

Various factors kept his dream from coming to fruition, and it was just as he gave up hope that things changed rapidly. “I gave up my dream in December 2018. Then one month later, out of the blue, my Dad said, ‘I want to buy the store, and I want you to run it.’” Kyle’s father, Stanley Goldsmith, is well known for his years of service as Supervisor for the Altavista District of Campbell County.

Now, Monday through Saturday, Kyle and his wife Cheri can be found running the store—serving customers, cooking up meals in the deli, and adding a variety of services to the business.

As the establishment’s name would suggest, it is first and foremost a general store and deli. While

the general store side of the enterprise has not been the busiest aspect, Kyle noted that things have actually picked up with the coronavirus times. Whether it is people living in the rural area glad of a shopping opportunity closer to home, or the ongoing availability of items that are sold out at many other stores (yes, there’s toilet paper, bread, eggs, and local produce in stock), people have been shopping at Carter’s.

But it’s the Deli that quickly surpassed the proprietors’ expectations. “I thought we were buying a small country general store that served baloney and ham sandwiches on the side, and sold a little gas.

But I quickly realized we’d bought a deli with a little gas and a side general store,” Kyle noted.

The cheese is sliced from giant wheels of hoop cheese. (“We keep a running count and celebrate how many hoops of cheese we’ve sold. We’re now working on #87 since opening last July,” he reported.)

So the house specialty is the bologna and cheese, both on the breakfast menu (served all day) and the lunch and dinner sandwich menu. If bologna isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other items (the chicken ‘n dumplings are highly recommended). On Saturdays, they fire up the grill and sell wagyu beef burgers. Locally raised, award-winning wagyu beef is also for sale frozen.

In the true spirit of rural general stores from back in Great-Grandpa LC’s day, the store is multi-faceted. It sells antiques and also has a museum of artifacts from the store’s past, and various local crafts are sold on consignment—crocheted and quilted items, wood-burning, and fragrance candles.

“By design, I’ve been adding on ever since we first opened,” Kyle explained. While each of the new enterprises have interesting stories in their own right, just

a quick list of them offers an impressive and dizzying survey of what’s happening down at Carter’s in Leesville. The old pumps out front aren’t just for show: they are working gas pumps.

Prior to—and after—the coronavirus shutdown, there were monthly local live music nights, “Jammin’ on the Porch.” Fishing supplies and ammo are available in the side “trophy room,” along with fine cigars and (coming soon) a cigar lounge. An outdoor stage for entertainment is in the works, along with an outdoor cooking area.

The kayak and shuttling services to Leesville Dam and Goose Creek are scheduled to get underway May 15. Like and follow the store’s Facebook page to stay up-to-date on developments.

The store’s outpost room connects people to the services of two professional fishing guides. Kyle is even looking into opening a drive-in movie theater, so stay tuned for more big happenings in Leesville.

True to the store’s roots, serving the community is a big part of how the Goldsmiths are developing the store.

12 • Discover Campbell County 2020 When the coronavirus hit and many people who are at risk started staying home, Carter’s Store launched its free delivery service. “In response to the quarantine, we’re trying to help as much as possible. We were planning to do it eventually anyway, so it made sense to kick it off now,” Kyle commented.

The delivery service covers a 10-mile radius and has a $15 minimum.

It applies to all the items for sale, from the general store items and deli food to the wagyu beef.

For those who aren’t familiar with the store, it is located at 6376 Bedford Hwy., Leesville, or on the internet at cartersstoreva.com. From Altavista, head west out of town on Bedford Highway. Go about six miles until you arrive at the store, on the left. It’s that simple. Get some bologna and cheese, browse the wide variety of merchandise, and ask Kyle for some stories about the Carter’s Store of yesteryear. They’re sure to fascinate you and keep you coming back for more. v

Chilli Willies offers a variety of new services and local products, including hot food, meat smoked on site, local wines, and a coffee corner. William Race opened Chilli Willies in the old Bob’s Market on Renan Road last year and has been expanding his products and services.

Race bought the store and house adjacent to it last year due to his experience in merchandizing and being familiar with the area. His experience is evident when walking in and seeing how clean and well organized the store is. “Everything is laid out for convenience and to maximize the space. We have over one thousand different types of products in stock,” says Race.

The store is open seven days a week, and it serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. Not only do they have grab-and-go choices, like nachos and pizza, but they also offer food made to order. Race said, “while customers wait, we have installed a large television, and also have games for kids and adults, claw machines, and front porch seating options.”

The store boasts a stocked coffee corner, along with a case of fresh pastries provided locally from Alma’s

The store keeps a heated display for nachos, and a frozen display with an array of hand dipped Hershey’s ice creams, as well as novelty ice cream.

Being a little further out in the country and away from bigger chain stores, Race noted that they keep a variety of over-the-counter medication in stock and located by the register. “If you have an allergic reaction or a headache and don’t want to drive all the way into town, then you can get Benadryl and Tylenol here.”

The store is still expanding, and Race was pleased to share that he had “just applied to be able to accept EBT pretty soon. With everything going on with the virus and people being out of work, more people may need access to places that accept EBT funds,” he explained.

He is also in the process of installing fountain drinks and expanding the meat smoking portion of the business. “We offer the option to smoke meat for people if they bring it in.

We smoked some turkeys around Christmas this last year.”

Race said he was open to organizations contacting him to set up fundraisers like car washes or bake sales, or local farmers and artisans who want to set up a table to sell their wares. Chilli Willies is hoping to fill a need in the area and to be able to give back to the business community by selling local products. v

This training is for all Campbell County Recreation Department Youth Soccer Coaches. It is provided by the National Alliance for Youth Sports. Coaches who successfully complete the Initial Level Membership training will automatically receive: Youth Sports Journal, Certificate of Completion, $1,000,000 excess liability insurance, membership card, exclusive online member area, annual subscription to SportingKid magazine, monthly newsletter and exclusive Corporate Discount/Programs.

Training Date: Sunday, September 20, 2020 Time: 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm Location: Campbell County Recreation Department Office Cost: $20.00 Registration Deadline: Friday, September 11, 2020 Description: Part 1- includes coaches learning preventing youth sports violence, teaching good sportsmanship, keeping players active at practice, building confidence, and the role of winning in youth sports.

Elementary School Track Meet

The Campbell County Recreation Department will hold an Elementary School Track Meet on Thursday, June 11, 2020 at 6:00 pm at the Brookville High School Track. Events include: Long Jump, 50 meter low hurdles, 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, 4 x 100 Relay (Participants doing the relay must be in the same age di-

vision and register as a 4 person team- batons will be provided) Cost: $5.00 per participant and participants can only do a maximum of 2 running events and must choose events when registering.

Registration: Participants must register at the Recreation Office by Friday, June 5, 2020 Ages Groups (Boys and Girls): 1st and 2nd Grade, 3rd and 4th Grade, 5th and 6th Grade (Current School Year) Participants must wear running shorts, t-shirts and running shoes- no open toe shoes or bare feet will be allowed.

Elementary Fall Cross Country League

The Campbell County Recreation Department will hold an Elementary Fall Cross Country League and a one (1) mile race.

Age Groups: 1st through 3rd Grade 4th through 6th Grade Fee: $20.00 per participant Days: Will vary depending on when coaches can meet.

Dates: August 17th through October 24th Times: 6:15 pm to 7:15 pm Sites: Brookville, Rustburg, Altavista and William Campbell (Sites will combine if necessary) Deadline to Register: Friday, August 14, 2020 The program will officially end on Saturday, October 24th with a one (1) mile cross country race site to be determined. More information will be provided concerning the race. Each registered runner will receive a team t-shirt. Everyone must wear running shorts, tshirts or sweats and running shoes- no open toed shoes or bare feet. Participants will learn proper running form and long distance training techniques. Coaches will be needed for each team at the different sites. Participants must register at the Recreation Office. For more information call 434-332-9570.

Hank Frazier retires from Altavista Chamber after two-plus decades of service Jenny Haugh

Altavista’s Chamber of Commerce announced the retirement of Office Manager E.H. (Hank) Frazier, Jr. as of April 30, and the local community is already feeling the loss. He served at the Chamber since 1996, and the Chamber believes his “passion for serving the community has played an important role in the growth and success of this organization.”

Linda Miller of Miller’s Jewelry stated, “When I moved here, Hank was the Chamber.” She recalled he would “stop by the shops once a week, just walk the street, and check on how business was going and if anyone needed anything, just like Stan Goldsmith when he was manager.”

Linda’s husband, Glen, grew up with Frazier and stated, “He’s the model of a good citizen. He’s dedicated, dependable, and always willing to work.

He loves and knows this community and he’s very thorough. He finishes what he starts, and he’s always willing to help other people finish their work, too.”

Frazier was raised in Altavista, and after college went into the Navy for 26 years. He was a Vietnam combat veteran and worked with a helicopter search and rescue team. After leaving the service, he continued to work “with weekend warriors for their tours and training,” according to his wife, Jan Frazier. When the Fraziers moved back to the area after Hank retired, someone suggested Jan volunteer for the Chamber of Commerce, and Hank decided that he would volunteer, too. He started working half days, and then as the Chamber began to grow, he worked more and more to

make the decisions of the board happen.

After volunteering for several months, Hank accepted an office position with the Altavista Chamber. Marie Mitchell, formerly of the Chamber, described Hank as “dedicated, loyal, dependable, faithful, has a strong work ethic, and is always willing to volunteer his time.”

She added, “Hank, along with his friend Phillip Popek, worked every TGIF, with the exception of 2 or 3, since it originally started.”

HANK LOOKS FORWARD TO SPENDING MORE TIME WITH HIS GRANDSON, JAMES, FOLLOWING RETIREMENT. One local business owner, Roger Blackstock, commented, “His disciplined character he was accustomed to from his military days made him so efficient. I was on the Chamber board for a number of years and also served as Chamber President. He made my job so much easier during that time. There was nothing going on in the community that he didn’t know about or was not already involved in, and that made the Chamber function in a more precise and productive manner for the benefit of the whole community. The Altavista community owes Hank a great deal of gratitude for all he has done.”

In addition to his work with the Chamber, he is also a member of the Lion’s club, the head of the administrative board at his church, a member of the board at Habitat for Humanity, and even a member of Altavista Combined School’s Pep Band.

ACS Band director Mario Ruiz observed that having Hank as the assistant Pep Band director for the last seven years has shown the kids that they can be lifelong musicians. Ruiz states that Frazier has “helped the band through the years, including in three state championship appearances.” He also notes, “The Altavista Pep Band and Mr. Ruiz would like to congratulate him on his retirement and will always welcome him to play in the stands!”

Glen Miller believes, “Hank is the epitome of what a good citizen should be; in fact, he won town Citizen of the year back in 2002.” One thing that stands out for most people, according to Miller, is that Hank “is here

for everybody, but he doesn’t ever complain or say anything bad about anyone.” Melinda Irby, one of the Chamber Board Directors, worked with him for town volunteer events, and exclaimed, “He was a hoot! I will miss his quick wit and sense of humor.”

Linda Rodriguez said Frazier helped her navigate the business area of town when she moved into the area.

She commented, “he was the backbone of the Chamber and really kept things together.” Rodriquez noted that he was always the first one there and the last one to leave for TGIF events and during Uncle Billy’s Day, where he worked at the Beer Garden. She confided, “He did a lot of work behind the scenes that no one knew about.”

Marie Mitchell stated, “He was a very valuable asset; his knowledge of Chamber and Town history is invaluable. The Chamber office was the 411 for Altavista, and you could count on Hank to know the answer or find it out.”

Frazier is looking forward to “more time with my family, including my one and only grandson, James.” He remarked, “I just can’t say enough about the people of this town and how much I’ve enjoyed working with them.”

Mrs. Frazier added, “he really enjoyed working with citizens of the town, and he wanted to give something back to his community.” Everyone seems to overwhelmingly agree: Hank Frazier has continually given back to his community in many ways and, while they are happy for him to be able to have more time with his family, he will be sorely missed. v

Meet Campbell County The new sheriff discusses the department, leadership, and community Abigail White Note: New Campbell County Sheriff Whit Clark took office on January 1, 2020. He recently talked with an Altavista Journal news correspondent about leadership and the office’s mission and new initiatives.

Campbell County Sheriff Winston “Whit” Clark spent most of his law enforcement career with the Lynchburg Police Department, beginning in 1983 and retiring in 2015 at the rank of captain. Then he began working parttime for the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office as a domestic violence investigator.

When previous Sheriff Steve Hutcherson announced his retirement, personnel within the sheriff’s office and members of the community asked Clark to consider a run.

After praying and talking to his family, he did. Now, he oversees a total of 82 people—including law enforcement officers and civilian personnel—within the department.

The office has new initiatives underway—like working to acquire K9s and planning to launch a citizens’ advisory board. It is also stepping up proactive community involvement strategies. But some things will remain the same, such as school resource officers in every county school.

The K9s that Clark is working to get are “an invaluable tool for the community,” he says. They are not just used for tracking down suspects running from law enforcement. They’re also important for finding missing children or elderly adults who have wandered from home. And they can aid officers in searching for narcotics.

It can take an hour or two to call in police dogs from other jurisdictions. Yet Clark estimated they’ve called in other agencies’ K9s four or five times since he took office.

“We are working very hard to start that program back up,” Clark says.

26 • Discover Campbell County 2020 The school resource officer program—which Clark credited to the previous administration—is here to stay. “For our size locality, it’s pretty rare to have [an SRO] in every school,” he says. “We enjoy being in the schools.” He emphasized that the program is never going away. “As long as I’m sheriff it’s not, because it’s just too important.”

Clark says most people don’t have contacts with law enforcement. If the sheriff’s office can have “a good, positive contact” with a student in the schools, he explains “that may be the only contact that individual has with law enforcement their entire life. And…we want to have a positive one.”

He added that they want students and teachers to know that law enforcement is there for them. “We’re there to help them, work with them.”

Maintaining and developing a strong team

Clark has already requested raises for his officers, although he also acknowledges that officers “don’t get into this job to get rich.” He remarks, “You’re not going to become a millionaire as a police officer or deputy.”

Law enforcement officers have a sense of service, he explains. “That is your drive to get in this job.”

Yet pay is important because Clark says a “majority of people have families that they want to support in this job.” And if potential applicants are looking at money as a factor when making job decisions, fair pay is part of what makes a department attractive. Clark wants the sheriff’s office to be competitive in that sense.

Attractiveness is valuable when an agency faces competition from other agencies or entities. In Campbell County’s case, competition can come from neighbors—like Lynchburg Police Department, BWXT, Liberty University, and other local sheriff’s offices. Clark says young people will probably look at four or five different places for the best package deal, and they’ll include many factors in their decisions.

In addition to attracting future officers, rewarding current ones is also a consideration. “I feel like our deputies have done a tremendous job, and my office staff has done a tremendous job, and they have earned an increase in their pay.”

However, for Clark, retaining the officers that have been hired involves more than salary alone. He explains another factor that affects retention is agency culture. “If you don’t have a positive agency culture, people…are just as apt to leave and go somewhere where the agency culture is more positive, where they can be paid.”

Agency culture, Clark says, includes morale—addressing whether employees feel that they’re valued

SHERIFF WHIT CLARK and listened to. Clark says it is his responsibility as the leader to make sure that the people working for him have a good work environment. It is his responsibility “to make sure that they have all the necessary equipment they need to do their jobs,” he says. “To be able to evaluate them, listen to them, and work with them daily. To be available to them. To be able to make sure that they can be successful, to prepare them for success.”

Leadership, 21st century style

Law enforcement leadership has evolved in the past decades, and Clark has adapted. “This is not the 70s and 80s of law enforcement, where as a leader you can say ‘Do what I tell you to do because I’m telling you to do it; I’m the leader of the organization,’” he says. “It doesn’t work that way anymore. You have to be a little more flexible. You have to listen to people.”

There are still times, Clark says, where employees will be expected to do their job without question (as long as it’s not unethical, illegal, or immoral, he adds).

But older leaders have to adapt. “This is…a younger generation of people, and they tend to ask a lot of questions,” he says. “And that’s okay.” He says questioners probably have a “genuine interest” and were raised to learn by asking questions. “So we have to, as leaders, not get offended,” Clark says. Instead, leaders have to “listen. And give a response.”

He doesn’t see leadership as an impersonal command and control process. “Being a leader, you are a servant to those people you work with,” he says. Nor does a leader grow beyond working in ground-level

Discover Campbell County 2020 • 27 operations. “I am out with my troops on the street,” he says. “I will respond to calls for service.” Clark says he enjoys that work in the field, and it’s part of who he is. “I like being out with the men and women who are on the street, making a difference.” Deputies, investigators, court service personnel, school resources officers—Clark says he will “be out there with them if they need me.”

In law enforcement, leadership can also involve making decisions that intimately affect employees but can’t be made by the employees themselves. Reassigning burned-out personnel is an example. “You have to be able to watch your people and take care of them and look at them and make sure that they’re not burning out.” No one will admit they’re burned out, Clark says.

“And sometimes you just have to make that decision for them.” He described a mentality of toughness that says, “I can do this job. I’m going to give you 110%.”

The solution to burnout could include moving an employee to learn and grow in another position, according to Clark. “You truly care about that person because you don’t want them to get into a mental rut,” he says. “Because if we get into a mental rut in this job, it could cost you your life.”

In his own experience

Clark’s own leadership style and strategies pull together experiences from across his career. There was training at North Carolina State University and the University of Richmond. But there were also people.

At trainings, Clark learned from instructors and peers alike. He also watched leaders during his years— nearly 37 years—in law enforcement. “Over my career, I’ve had a tremendous amount of leaders that I totally respected, that I learned from,” he says. “Even when you’re in your earliest ranks, you are watching the leaders.”

For Clark, these were people like Jack Lewis, Wayne Cyrus, Chuck Bennett, C.T. Carter—his own leaders at Lynchburg Police Department earlier in his career— some of whom went on to lead law enforcement agencies in other localities. “When you work for really good people, and you watch them, and you learn from them, and you follow them, and then you develop your own leadership style, hopefully you can be successful.”

To sum up who he is, Clark begins with his relationship with Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. “I’m a Christian,” Clark explains, “and I have conservative moral beliefs.” He explains that he’s not perfect “by any means.”

But as the sheriff, he wants people to understand that he is a sheriff for everybody. “Not just one group of individuals.” He explains, “I want them

to know that everybody, while I’m sheriff, can expect equal treatment under the law.” The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office is approachable, he adds. “I want to hear from people and speak with people.”

In the community Neither the new sheriff nor the team he leads intends to work alone. The office’s motto is “We are a part of the community, not apart from it.” They are planning and executing community involvement strategies.

They are putting effort into community relations, which includes “making contacts with citizens every day,” Clark says. “We are seeing people out in the street, and we’re talking to them.” For himself and his team, it includes saying hello and introducing themselves and encouraging people to call with questions or needs.

The office is also working on business partnerships—letting businesses know that the sheriff’s office is willing to come in and talk to employees. Churches, daycare centers, and retirement homes aren’t left out, either. “We’re reaching out to the entire community, and we’re letting them know that we are approachable, and we want to partner with you to make a difference in the entire county,” Clark says. “Our county is over 500 square miles…we know we can’t be everywhere at one time, but we want people to know the deputies of the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office.”

Community meet-and-greet events with the sheriff’s office are also upcoming. It provides an opportunity for community members to meet deputies and state troopers who work in that area. “It’s going to be close to probably 20 or 30 deputies there including myself and my command staff,” Clark says. They intend to have police cars, children’s activities, food, and a crime prevention booth. Virginia State Police and Campbell County Public Safety personnel will join.

The point is “for people to come meet us,” Clark says. “We’re all going to be at this one location, and anyone in the county can come say hello to us or talk to us about anything that they want to talk to us about.”

Clark says the office is “trying to be a positive entity within our community of Campbell County.” And the strategy and community orientation the office is crafting are not the sheriff’s alone.

“The things that we’re trying to do, we would not be capable of doing without a tremendous department,” he says. “The deputies and the leaders in our department are tremendous. They do an incredible job every single day.” Clark says they are the ones who have developed the vision for what services the sheriff’s office wants to deliver to Campbell County citizens. “It’s not me. It’s the entire department. We’re all in this, and we all have the same vision.” v

The name Langhorne is no stranger to those living in the Lynchburg area. Likewise, many are also familiar with the famous names of Astor and Gibson. However, what many do not know is that these three famous families share a connection to Altavista through the Fauntleroy family, who once owned the now historical site of Avoca.

Discover Campbell County 2020 • 29 Many notable families in Virginia were related to each other and, while the family lines are blurred, the Langhornes and Fauntleroys were distant cousins. To put it in perspective, the children of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Fauntleroy, who owned Avoca, were third cousins once removed from the children of Mr. and Mrs. Chiswell Langhorne. The Langhorne family originated out of Danville, but it eventually moved to Lynchburg and often visited their cousins at Avoca. Two recognizable American figures that often visited Avoca with their family were Irene Langhorne Gibson (the “Gibson Girl”) and her sister, Nancy Witcher Langhorne Astor (Lady Astor).

Before these women became household names, their father, Chiswell Langhorne, started traveling to New York City with his family to make connections with the wealthy families in the north, the classic industrial era tale of “new money” wishing to mingle with the “old money.”

Because of these trips, his daughters married auspicious matches. Irene Langhorne met her husband, artist Charles Dana Gibson, at Delmonico’s. Her sister, Nancy Witcher Langhorne Shaw, also met her husband, Waldorf Astor, 2nd Viscount Astor, in New York.

However, before Lady Nancy Astor met the Viscount, she was married to her first husband, Robert Gould Shaw II. While the marriage was an unhappy one, their subsequent divorce still brought a scandal upon the family. Despite this hardship, however, both, Lady Nancy Astor and her sister, Irene, excelled in their respective roles influencing not only their time and communities, but future generations as well.

IRENE LANGHORNE GIBSON, AS ILLUSTRATED BY HER HUSBAND

Irene was a popular and influential socialite who enjoyed spending quality time with her family. Because of her love for family and her own children, Irene impacted New York Society by chairing the Child Planning and Adoption Committee of New York’s State Charities Association, founding the New York branch of the Southern Women’s Educational Alliance, was a member of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children, and helped found and direct the Protestant Big Sisters. Today, the Protestant Big Sisters organization is known as the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization.

Lady Nancy Astor navigated her way through the world of British politics to become the first sitting female member of parliament in 1919, taking her husband’s seat after he left to take up his late father’s duties as Viscount. In this role she primarily fought for women’s rights, a progressive educational policy, temperance, and for the extension of the Trade Boards Acts.

Lady Astor served in Parliament until her retirement in 1945 but remained active in voicing her opinion on subjects for which she held great passion.

Both of these women worked tirelessly in a time when the world of influence was so often controlled by men. Through their grace, dignity, and strong dispositions, Lady Nancy Astor and Irene Langhorne Gibson shaped not only their world, but also the world enjoyed today. Their story serves as an example that while obstacles may be in the way, anyone can shape, not only their world, but also the world of future generations. After all, it is quite a responsibility to make history, and to make it one worth remembering. v

Local woman recalls selling The Altavista Journal in her youth Jenn phillips

In the 1940s and early 1950s, Altavista was an industrial town, bustling with prosperity. Even children shared in Altavista’s successful economy.

Altavista resident Sue Farmer Mattox, now 78, sold copies of The Altavista Journal when she was 11. Her brother Pete Farmer, who was 13, sold papers also. The paper cost just five cents. Their cousin Bobby Jennings had the Altavista route, which helped to put him through college, and he shared it with Sue and Pete.

Burlington, Klopman, and the Lane Co. were all on the route. The job selling papers gave the children spending money, $2.50 per week. “I don’t know how Mama kept up with it, because we’d spend it as soon as we got it,” Mattox said. Mattox recalls buying hot dogs and also going to the movies.

Both of her parents worked at the Lane Co. “All of my aunts and uncles worked there, too,” she added. “The Lane Co. was a hub for Altavista. PeoPeo ple came from other counties to work in Altavista, because we had a lot of industry back then.”

One evening Pete, who also went door to door selling papers in addition to selling at the factories, sat at home cutting ten strings. The next day he took the strings with him to a customer’s house.

The customer owed him $10.00. He told her she could pay him by selling him ten chickens for a dollar each. He came home that night with a bag full of chickens and a paid bill.

Mattox recalls that at Christmastime, workers at the Lane Co. would give her “little gifts.” She said, “The people were so nice to me.

“My mother and father taught us many things, including how to work,” Mattox said. “Mama was very enterprising, and she taught us to be also,” Mattox contincontin ued. “That’s how we got the paper job.”

Mattox had chores at home in addition to working for her spending money. There was a public swimming pool where the Altavista YMCA is now, and Mattox could go swimming after she finished regular chores such as ironing. v

Graduation 2020:

the one we’ll never forget Class of 2020 -- at Altavista, Rustburg, FCA -- graduates in unique ceremonies amidst unprecedented circumstances Article & photos by Jeffrey Westbrook Altavista Journal

What a ride it’s been for the Class of 2020. This year’s seniors faced unprecedented circumstances, with the last quarter of the school year relegated to study-athome, spring sports scrapped, and major events such as prom cancelled. Not only was their final semester cut short and activities curtailed by the coronavirus situation, but then—because of the governor’s restrictions— they were unable to graduate with their classmates, as has been the tradition year after year for over a century in Altavista.

High schools around the country and across the commonwealth scrambled to provide alternate arrangements in the year of coronavirus restrictions. Campbell County Public Schools opted for each high school to hold individualized mini-ceremonies for each graduate and family at the schools’ football fields. The details were up to the school to plan. These arrangements replaced for the Class of 2020 the customary commencement exercises that the county’s schools hold at the Vines Center at Liberty University.

Altavista High School The Altavista High School faculty and administration pulled out all the stops to make the individualized graduation ceremonies as special as possible. The “drivethrough” graduation on June 4th and 5th—while unusual—demonstrated considerable care from the faculty and brought lots of smiles to graduates’ and their parents’ faces.

The seniors picked up their honor cords and regalia before entering the stadium.

Each student was permitted two carloads of family to drive onto the Altavista High School track at English Stadium. The cars stopped along the track at the field’s midfield line, and the senior and parents got

out and walked onto the field, a recording of the graduation march “Pomp and Circumstance” playing in the stadium. The graduate’s name was announced over the loudspeaker, along with plans for next year.

Chairs—one with each student’s name—were set up on the field to represent the entire graduating class.

“They couldn’t be with their classmates, so the chairs are a symbolic representation,” explained Assistant Principal Michelle McBride. Students had a photo op by their chair.

Next, they received their diploma and a word of congratulations from McBride and joined Principal Ty Gafford on stage. He conferred the graduates with the traditional turning of the tassel and congratulated them.

New graduate and parents then posed for a photo op on a giant Altavista A on the field with a backdrop of the scoreboard set to 20:20 (cue music change to the goodtimes favorite “Celebration” by Kool & the Gang). They even had the opportunity to toss their caps into the air.

Parents and newly minted graduate returned to their cars and took a victory lap around the track. Handmade congratulations signs along the way—from the teachers—offered the students a “memory lane” experience, McBride noted.

The commencement ceremony for each student became quite short, but it focused on that student. For the faculty and administration, it made for two long days, but the teachers volunteered to be there, help out, and enthusiastically cheer on the students for their achievement.

“We couldn’t have done today without the teachers,” McBride observed. Judging by the smiles on the students’ and parents’ faces, it was worth it.

There was also a parade the following Sunday in which the school, the Colonel

Rustburg High School Circumstances were similar up the road at Rustburg High School. With so much of the usual end-of-school-career lost for this year’s seniors, the administration and faculty at RHS put forth a tremendous effort to make the occasion special for the graduating seniors and their families.

“Our approach to graduation was to give each senior and their families an individualized ceremony while keeping the main traditions of graduation, but also adding in some special details for the occasion and following all of the Governor’s orders” explained principal Dr. Amy Hale.

“We had seniors and their parents and guardians enter the football field, and the first stop was a selfie spot designated by our Rustburg R with the scoreboard in the background lit up to say 2020. Seniors then walked to the stage set up further down the football field so that the seniors’ guests in parked cars could view the graduation. The field was painted special for the walkway.

I then announced them as a graduate and they walked across the stage, turning their tassels as the bottom of the steps. I had an additional photographer take pictures of the graduate with their parents and guardians in front of a special backdrop,” Hale noted.

“Graduates and their families were very appreciative of the individual approach and the time they were able to spend on the football field. My faculty did a wonderful job of being very positive since they have also missed seeing the students.” Hale added that a tremendous amount of planning and coordination went into making the graduation a reality, but that she and her team were “happy to do it for this senior class.” With over 200 students graduating from Red Devil Country, it took three days to complete the ceremonies, she noted.

Faith Christian Academy Across the river from Altavista in Hurt, Faith Christian Academy opted to hold their graduation a little later until after some more of the governor’s restrictions had eased. Given the smaller size of the student body, they were able to hold commencement exercises with the whole graduating class and their families in attendance, with modifications.

On a beautiful Friday evening (June 12th), FCA held commencement exercises in a somewhat modified ceremony, outside in front of the school’s central building.

The 10 graduates sat in chairs spread out and facing the audience. Immediate family sat in the limited seating area, while faculty and board members remained in their cars in the side parking lot, and extended family and friends of the graduates stayed in their cars in the main parking lot.

Outgoing Head of School Scott Bose delivered the commencement address. Popular former Bible teacher, the Rev. Barry Fero, presented the challenge from God’s Word from Joshua chapter 3. The Rev. Sam Knaus, father of a graduate, offered the invocation, and Academy Board President Tony Bowling led in the closing prayer. Bose and Assistant Administrator Lisa Moore served as emcees for the ceremony.

First in class Aiden Lashway delivered the valedictory, and runner-up Stephanie Midkiff delivered the salutatory.

Graduate Jaiden Lane sang the National Anthem.

Her classmate, Sam Knaus, Jr. presented the senior class gift: “furniture for the gym lobby that will allow people to gather and fellowship (in the future)… [and] a donation to the mission Disaster Rebuilders in Panama City where we were planning to go on our Senior Missions trip, but were unable to attend due to COVID-19,” Knaus explained.

The graduates received gift Bibles from the school board and personal cakes following the ceremony.

Colonels swimmers finish well at State Championships Jeffrey Westbrook

In just its second year as a team, the Altavista High School varsity swim team took 12 swimmers to the state championships, earned seven all-region swimming honors, and boasted an all-state swimmer. On top of that, sophomore Kristopher Schultz medaled in both of his individual state events, taking third in the 200 I.M. and fourth in the 500 freestyle.

The state championships meet took place at the state-of-the-art facilities of SwimRVA in Chesterfield on Feb. 19.

Because so few class 1 schools in the commonwealth have swim teams, tiny school and newcomer Altavista has to compete in class 2 at the regional and state levels against much larger schools.

That didn’t stop the Colonels from finishing strong.

The boys as a team finished 16th in the state championships (out of 31), one place ahead of fellow Dogwood District school Appomattox. The girls finished 23rd (out of 29), tied with Parry McCluer and not far behind Appomattox (19th).

The only other schools from this area that had swimmers place in the state finals were Central (Lunenburg, 12th boys, 27th girls) and Prince Edward County (30th boys, 15th girls).

Overall first place for the boys was Radford (with 277 points, one ahead of Virginia High School). First place for the girls’ teams was Glenvar (242 points).

The Colonels’ 12 swimmers combined for a total of 14 entries (counting each four-person relay team as one entry).

Swimming at the state championships can be particularly grueling because competitors must race in the morning in

Discover Campbell County 2020 • 43 qualifying heats, and then the top 16 in each event do it all over again that same evening in the finals. So, for instance, Schultz swam 750 yards—twice—and Micah Andrews swam 650, also twice.

All-region swimming honorees for Altavista included Leah Andrews, Micah Andrews, Emmaleigh Stallard, Dana Phillips, Emily Giles, Kristopher Schultz, and Justin Wingfield. Schultz also earned all-state honors in the 200 I.M. Assistant coach Kim Schultz commented, “It was an excellent showing from our team! We’re super proud!”

Even more good news for the Altavista swim team is that of the state competitors, one is a senior, one a junior, and all the rest are freshmen and sophomores. That and some eighth graders with consistently fast times bodes well for the program in years to come.
