f there’s anything that the past year has taught us, it is that healthy outdoor activities are key to maintaining both our physical and mental well-being.

Just taking a half hour walk several times a week can make all the difference.

Fortunately, the Rockbridge area offers a wide variety of options for outdoor recreation for walkers, runners, cyclists — both bicycles and motorcycles, paddlers, birdwatchers, fisherfolk and hunters.

For those looking for just a daily pick-meup, a walk around the neighborhoods in Lexington or Buena Vista may be enough.

A 20 to 30 minute brisk walk can clear your head, invigorate you and burn some of those extra calories.

More ambitious walkers can get in some miles on the Chessie Trail, which runs on an old railroad bed between Lexington and Buena Vista. Its level, graveled surface is great for walks, a run or riding a bike.

Views of farm fields, the Maury River, and the stone ruins of 150-year old canal locks add to the enjoyment. The bridge across South River, which washed out in a flood about 15 years ago is scheduled to be replaced this year, making the trail continuous from end to end.

The Woods Creek Trail threads its way along the eponymous creek from Waddell Elementary School, Woods Creek Park and the back campuses of W&L and VMI. Some of the trail is through open spaces, but the section from Lime Kiln Road running northeast under Rt. 60 and behind W&L is through woods along the banks of the creek. The trail runs through an old stone railroad culvert that carries East Denny Circle over the creek. Farther along, walkers see VMI’s baseball fields and tennis courts. The trail ends at Jordan’s Point Park on the Maury River.

Just ten minutes from downtown Lexington is the Brushy Hills Preserve, a 560 acre tract owned by the City of Lexington, with a 14mile system of trails ranging in length from a half mile to over nine miles. These trails wind through the wooded Brushy Hills, over forest paths and old logging roads, and offer a variety of terrain and difficulty.

The Appalachian Trail runs through the eastern border of Rockbridge County, and provides more challenging hiking terrain.

Access to the AT in Rockbridge can be made off Rt. 501/130 at Snowden, east of Glasgow, off Rt. 60 east of Buena Vista and where the trail crosses Rt. 56 east of

Vesuvius. There’s parking at the Rt. 501/130 and Rt. 60 crossings making day hikes on the AT do-able.

Rockbridge County is on the Bike 76 route, which runs from western Kansas to Yorktown, VA. The route goes right through the middle of Lexington on Main Street. The annual Trans Am Bike Race, which runs from Ashland, Oregon to Yorktown takes the riders right through downtown Lexington.

It’s not unusual to see riders on Rockbridge’s country roads, enjoying the challenge of our hilly terrain. The Blue Ridge Parkway is also popular with cyclists.

Those who prefer the splash of a paddle and the rush of running a rapid will find much to love in Rockbridge. Both the Maury and James Rivers are great canoeing and kayaking streams. As our front cover shows, Goshen Pass is a favorite of experienced kayakers. Even beginners can find stretches of both rivers that are can be run with a little bit of thoughtful navigation.

For those who love the water for fishing, this area is an angler’s paradise. The public access locations to fish the Maury are plentiful, from Goshen Pass to Lexington’s Jordan’s Point Park to Glen Maury Park in Buena Vista. The upper Maury is stocked with brown and rainbow trout.

Small-mouth bass, rock bass, sun perch, and carp are abundant all the way down to the mouth of the river at Glasgow.

Likewise, the James River is popular for both traditional bait or lure casting and fly fishing.

Rockbridge has an abundance of bird species, and bird watching has been big here for a century. One of the earlier Audubon Society Christmas Bird Counts was begun here in the 1920s. The variety of habitat and terrain in Rockbridge makes this area conducive to hosting a diversity of species. The Northern Red-tail hawk migrations in the late fall and early spring offer the chance to see these impressive raptors in larger than normal numbers.

The Blue Ridge Parkway and other higher elevations are good places to go to watch for

them. Bald eagles are seen not infrequently along the James and Maury Rivers.

Rail Rockbridge County is served by both Norfolk Southern and CSX railroads.

Norfolk Southern’s tracks run down the eastern side of the county through Buena Vista, Glasgow and Natural Bridge Station.

hy do people choose to move to the Rockbridge County area?

There are a variety of reasons, some that have existed for years, and some that are a fairly new phenomenon.

Some were taken with the natural beauty while driving through on the Interstates.

Others were passing through the area for other reasons. Some got interested while visiting friends or family.

For years, people who grew up here and left after high school or college for a job or to pursue a career would return to the area when they retired. It’s almost axiomatic that teenagers think that their hometowns are boring, and can’t wait to get to the big city and an exciting life. But it usually doesn’t take too long before they realize how good it was in that small town, where you knew your neighbors and could walk downtown for an ice cream cone. The pull of home, though, often had to wait until retirement. Homes designed for retirees, condos and retirement communities like Kendal at Lexington now offer returning natives real alternatives for retirement living.

Then, there are the researchers. With the wealth of information available on the internet, there are those who have particular desires for a place to relocate — a place with definite seasons but not too hot or too cold, a place with natural beauty, a place that will be intellectually stimulating, a place with a healthy downtown shopping area.

These folks search the web for candidates.

Sometimes those ‘top ten’ lists that pop up on Facebook, or that get published in magazines influence a selection of the Lexington area.

Graduates of our colleges and universities also opt to return to the area. Fond memories of time spent here and the appeal of college towns with the cultural and social offerings of the schools brings back old grads every year. And, there are even cases of the parents of students being so taken with this place that they moved here.

For whatever reason, the influx of new arrivals has always been a very positive thing for our area. They often come with a desire to be involved in the community; to volunteer for our non-profits and civic organizations, to take leadership roles in local government, and to bring new ideas.

Such local institutions as the Rockbridge Community Festival and the Rockbridge Area Health Center had their genesis with people who had moved here and saw a need.

There are also a surprising number of people who move here that just happened to stumble onto the Rockbridge area.

One thing almost everyone who moves to the Rockbridge area has in common — they love it here!

and the country. My husband, an Indiana native, and I met in Roanoke where he had lived for twelve years. We migrated north to Philadelphia where we lived for 30+ years. Fast forward to retirement when it was time to make plans for the future. We knew we wanted to downsize and simplify life. We both loved the comforting Blue Ridge Mountains where we spent many a vacation. Being closer to family and reconnecting with long-time friends was also a top priority. And with both colleges, we anticipated enjoying the sporting and cultural events. It didn’t take long to come to the conclusion that Lexington would be the perfect place.

EDUCATION

T

he Lexington-Buena Vista-Rockbridge area is justly renowned for its educational institutions. Washington and Lee University, Virginia Military Institute, Southern Virginia University and Dabney S. Lancaster Community College all have campuses in the Rockbridge area.

Indeed, between the area’s public schools and the colleges, education is the number one employer in Rockbridge.

The area’s public schools have been leaders in the state for years. Buena Vista’s publicschool system pioneered year-round classes years ago. Lexington’s schools consistently place near or at the top of statewide rankings based on standardized test scores. And Rockbridge County Schools are known both for its Career and Technical Program (CTE) and the high quality of its academic programs. Both Rockbridge County and Parry McCluer High Schools offer Advanced Placement (AP) classes and dual enrollment programs with DSLCC, which offer students the opportunity to earn college credits while in high school.

Virginia’s Work-Based Learning (WBL) Opportunities program is an integral part of Rockbridge’s curriculum. The program aims to get every student a WBL experience before they graduate. This is an effort to prepare students for careers in their areas of interest. Regardless of whether a student chooses to go to work after completing high school, join the military, attend trade school or college, the fact is that every student will eventually join the workforce and when they do, this will help prepare them for the real-world work environment.

Dabney S. Lancaster Community College is a vital part of the area’s educational and training infrastructure. The college’s Rockbridge Regional Center (RRC), located on Vista Links Drive in Buena Vista, hosts a variety of day and night courses, both credit and non-credit, each semester. The RRC houses the Culinary Arts, Massage Therapy, and Licensed Practical Nursing programs.

DSLCC transfer students may also complete the General Studies Associate of Arts and Sciences degree at the RRC. Student support services available include academic advising, tutoring, placement testing, tuition payment, and proctored course testing.

“Honor the Lord and serve the community” Long before Landey and Becky ended up in Lexington as innkeepers, he had a unique experience that he says taught him a thing or two that related to running Abigail Inn. Back in 1969, well before the years of Michael Jordan and the six NBA titles he led the Bulls to in the 1990s, Landey was a 29-year-old commercial real estate broker in Chicago and got to know some of the Bulls’ staff.

eople move to the Lexington area for myriad reasons — some to be closer to family, some because they attended one of our four colleges and universities, some after doing research on attractive places to live. Landey and Becky Patton moved here in 2013 to manage the Abigail Inn on South Main Street, which they had had bought several years before.

Landey was born and raised in Leesburg.

He had wanted to go to Washington and Lee University because Dean Frank Gilliam was the head of admissions there. “My senior year of high school, I met [Gilliam], and I thought he was the finest man I’d ever met in my life,” Landey said.

However, his great-grandfather was the president at Princeton, and family heritage led him there.

After a 38-year career in commercial real estate in Chicago, the Pattons moved to northern Virginia, where their five daughters had also relocated. Landey said he loved Chicago, but the geography of Virginia appealed to him.

He was shocked at the price of real estate in the Washington area, and rather than buy there, he began investing in properties elsewhere in Virginia. One day he said to himself, “I ought to go down to Lexington and look.” He ended up buying an investment property here, his first of several.

Lexington reminded him of the Leesburg of his youth, what was then a small town.

Furthermore, he said that Lexington has, “everything you could want in a small town.

It has the colleges, a symphony orchestra — it’s a sophisticated community.” He called Lexington, “The Jewel of Virginia.”

On one of his trips here in 2010 looking a property, he happened to see a For Sale sign in front of what became the Abigail Inn. In 2011, Landey and Becky, along with three other investors, bought it.

“

You’re not the main act,” he said. “The people that come to stay at a bed and breakfast, are not coming to see you. They come to see Lexington, which we refer to as the ‘Jewel of Virginia’.”

Originally built in 1928 for one of W&L’s fraternities which later went defunct, the house was the location of the Presbyterian foster children’s home for a number of years. About 30 years ago, it was purchased and renovated into an inn.

Abigail Inn’s dining room, with a large dining table and an spacious adjoining living room, plus the institutional kitchen make the inn ideal for small corporate gatherings, intimate weddings, retreats and family reunions. Upstairs are six bedrooms, all with private baths.

The inn is a favorite of returning W&L and VMI alumni, and those seeking a quiet getaway from big-city life.

The Pattons had other people running the inn for two years, but in 2013, after dealing with frequent staff turnover and the hassles of trying to run it from afar, they decided to move to Lexington and become innkeepers.

One thing led to another, and Landey became the Bulls’ first mascot, Benny the Bull. Prior to getting the mascot, the Bulls’ attendance was so poor that the staff regularly doubled attendance reports.

During his time as Benny the Bull, Landey said he learned several valuable lessons.

He knew mascots were at college sports games but had not seen one at a professional game. “Since I was the first one, there was no manual on how to be a mascot, what you had to do,” he said. “It was very simple, and I was left to my own devices to figure out what I was supposed to do because nobody was coaching me. They didn’t say anything. They just said, be there.

And I ended up making up stuff.”

Landey said his lessons as Benny the Bull also applied to running the Abigail Inn. “You’re not the main act,” he said. “The people that come to stay at a bed and breakfast, they’re not coming to see you. They’re coming to see little Johnny or little Susie at one of the schools. They’re coming to see the area.”

Landey and Becky retired from the dayto-day management of the inn in 2020, but plan on remaining in Lexington. They moved to a house they had bought several years ago on the outskirts of town.

To take over the daily management of the inn The Pattons and their partners brought in Jessica and Thierry Lemercier as innkeepers and new partners. Thierry is a VMI graduate, with a breadth of experience in the hospitality industry, most recently with the St. Regis hotel organization.

“It was ever in mind to move to Lexington,” Landey Patton said. “We love it here.

In terms of meaning, being in Lexington — what more could we ask for?”

He said that operating the inn has always been fun. His philosophy in doing so came down to a simple but profound statement –

or a rural county and a couple of small cities in western Virginia, Lexington, Buena Vista and Rockbridge County together enjoy a growing reputation for food and beverages. The area’s restaurants are featured increasingly in regional and even national publications, the number of vineyards, breweries and cideries has grown dramatically over the past few years, and locally produced meats, grains, chocolates, and orchard crops are showing up on menus locally and as far away as the Washington, DC area.

One local dairy produces a variety of cheeses, and another farm produces goat cheese, goat milk dairy and skin products.

From generations-old establishments reinvented to award-winning locavore restaurants to great barbecue places, this area offers a lot of variety in dining choices.

The pandemic has forced local eateries to adapt with reduced indoor seating and takeout meals. But the food has not suffered.

With warm weather, more outdoor dining options are available. The City of Lexington even installed picnic tables in Hopkins Green and Courthouse Square downtown so that diners would have a pleasant place to enjoy a takeout lunch or dinner.

Old Lex Mercantile in Lexington features a variety of olive oils, balsamic vinegars and other specialty food items. Cocoa Mill Chocolate Co. has won accolades for its yummy confections. Wade’s Mill in the Raphine area of the county, produces stoneground flours, cornmeal, grits and baking mixes from their grains. Washington Street Purveyors in Lexington is a great source for local and Virginia wines, beers and ciders.

One thing about driving around the country roads of Rockbridge County is that you often make discoveries of new sources of local produce. County farmers raise Asian pears, apples, blueberries, poultry and eggs, lavender, vegetables, herbs, and honey.

It’s not uncommon to come around a curve and see a hand-lettered sign offering produce direct from the grower.

For the amateur chef or just the home cook looking for the best for the family, the Rockbridge area’s local food scene is impressive. The Lexington Farmers Market, open every Wednesday morning in the Jefferson Street parking lot, brings in vendors selling fresh in-season produce, meats, baked goods, honey, fruit from area orchards and much more.

Several local farms sell grass-fed beef and free-range chickens. Cattlemen’s Market just east of Lexington offers a variety of local products and specializes in local meats from Rockbridge County farms.

From Devils Backbone’s Outpost, with its tap room and restaurant, and its production brewery producing thousands of barrels of beer annually, to downtown microbrewers, to farm wineries and vineyards, to Halcyon Days Cider Co. with a unique orchard labyrinth, the choices are many.

Rockbridge Vineyard was the pioneer in the county with the first vines planted over

30 years ago. Since then the vineyard has won numerous awards in the state for its wines, and just last fall, added a brewery to the property.

Great Valley Farm Brewery & Winery, near Natural Bridge is a more recent arrival on the local beverage scene. Opening in 2016, it quickly established a reputation for great beers. Last year, the owners, Irma and Nathan Bailey, added wines to the menu from their own vineyard. Besides creating really fine beers and wines, the views of the Blue Ridge mountains from the brewery are absolutely stunning.

Great Valley Farm Brewery & Winery

O

wners Irma and Nathan Bailey opened Great Valley Farm Brewery in October of 2016 with a focus on Belgian-style ales. From the first weekend, it was clear to beer enthusiasts that Great Valley’s selections were outstanding.

That weekend was the realization of years of planning. The Bailey’s bought the land in 2008, and the initial plan was to plant a vineyard there. By 2012, Nathan and Irma had moved to Virginia from North Carolina and vines had been planted. The vineyard now spreads over six acres, and most of the grapes are used in their own wine production, with the remainder being sourced mainly from other small family vineyards in the Shenandoah Valley. Grapes are also utilized in the brewing process, particularly in specialty, barrel-aged beers.

Nathan has been a long-time home brewer and avid craft beer lover. So, in 2015, they planned and began construction on the brewery. The brewery boasts a great covered and heated patio, picnic tables with umbrellas on the lawn, and Adirondack chairs overlooking the vineyard with a spectacular view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Wine production started in 2019, with a focus on making distinctive wines that showcase the excellent growing conditions that the Valley of Virginia has to offer.

The Baileys are expanding production but quantities will remain relatively small so that they can focus on producing the highest quality wines.

Great Valley has gained a solid reputation not just among locals but beyond Rockbridge County as the ‘go to’ spot for quality beer and great scenery. The Bailey’s pride themselves on keeping quality as the number one goal in everything they do, from the beer and wine to the customer service.

Cocoa Mill Chocolate Co.

A

n institution on West Nelson Street in Lexington, Cocoa Mill Chocolate Company began making artisan chocolate confections in 1993, in a building just down the street from its current location.

The founder, Bob Aimone, sold the business to Laura Demaria about 20 years ago, and now, Laura’s daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Mike Mayo own the business.

There’s also a store in downtown Staunton.

Cocoa Mill has received national recognition as a creator of exquisite fair-trade chocolates.

Cattlemen’s Market/Buffalo Creek Beef/Donald’s Meat Processing for the operation. Chas (generation six) and his wife, Rosalea, have a beef cattle and sheep operation at the foot of House Mountain, with their three young daughters.

T

he Potter Family traces its farming history back seven generations. In the mid 1800s, Issac Potter began farming along Buffalo Creek near Collierstown. The family later owned and operated the mill at the bend of Collierstown Road, PotterWade Mill.

Generation three, Ray Lee Potter, first sharecropped, and later purchased the property that is now Churchview Farm.

Churchview Farm is the home of Buffalo Creek Beef.

Charlie Jr. (generation five) and his wife Joan restored the farmhouse in the 60s and raised their family on the farm. Their son, Chas, is an active participant in the family farming operation. Their oldest daughter, Marnie, and her husband Seth, operate a commercial sheep flock in the Effinger area. Charlie and Joan’s other daughter, Susanne, and her husband, Bert O’Neal, live in Atlanta, Georgia. Buffalo Creek Beef is very fortunate to have Bert as a management consultant

Our family has been growing beef for over 100 years. And we have been eating our own beef and selling halfs and quarters to our friends for many of those years. With the renewed understanding of the general public that eating food grown within a few miles of your home is the far superior to eating food that has been trucked or flown in from thousands of miles away, we are thrilled to be able to provide high quality, healthy meat directly to your table.

The ground work for Buffalo Creek Beef began in 2006. Chas saw that the local food movement was making headway and decided to finish out 10 steers. Those steers were processed and sold to friends and neighbors.

From there, Buffalo Creek Beef was officially formed and started finishing cattle.

We feed out only the best of our calves. Our cow herd is Angus Based and we used Angus and Wagyu bulls to breed our cows. Our animals are hand fed and cared for in small groups. This allows us to observe each animal’s performance, which ensures that each animal is harvested at the right time.

The calves are raised on grass for the majority of their lives. No hormones or

antibiotics are ever introduced to these high quality cattle. At approximately 900 lbs. our calves are put into small groups for roughly 120 days where they live in a large barnyard, with ample room to move around and grass to supplement the finishing feed. Feeding takes place in a clean barn with a sawdust covered concrete floor. The cattle are free to move from the barn to the barnyard at will.

Once selected, the cattle are fed a custom mixture of farm grown silage, brewers grain (byproduct of Devils Backbone Outpost Brewery beer production) and ground corn grown on the farm. The mixture is fresh and tasty and produces a beef that is subtly marbled and extraordinarily tasty.

In 2017, we saw the need for a retail outlet for our beef, pork, lamb, prepared meals, and other kitchen needs. Cattlemen’s Market, just east of Lexington on East Midland Trail (Rt. 60) proudly sells our Buffalo Creek Beef and other locally and regionally produced items.

Season’s Yield Farm extends up the road to Daniel’s parents home where they have over 300 maple taps. “We produce the most wonderful syrup from these trees which is available in our shop,” says Daniel.

The farm also has a space above the bakery that serves as a short term rental through AirBnB. The farm’s website allows you to order bakery items and our other products in season. f we weren’t aware of benefits and the challenges of working remotely before 2020, the past year made many of us aware. COVID forced many Rockbridge area residents to adapt to working from home as a safety measure. Our primary and secondary school students also had to adjust to remote learning.

With this new connectivity available to a large swathe of local residents, how are people using broadband technology to have the best of all worlds — the ability to live here in this beautiful area with rolling farms and small towns, and still work in careers that once required a person to live in a large metro area? One local resident’s experience with working remotely is a great story we wanted to share.

“ This would not have been possible even five years ago. Over the past decade, Rockbridge County and the Cities of Buena Vista and Lexington have seen remarkable growth in broadband coverage, fueled by government rural broadband grants and private investment by area providers.

For a rural county, the Rockbridge area has a high level of access. According to Broadbandnow.com, 84 percent of homes and businesses in Rockbridge County are able to get 25 mbps service. The two cities offer virtually universal access, with 98% of addresses able to be served. For those needing even faster service, 76 percent of addresses in county have access to 100+ mbps speeds, and half can get speeds of 1 gigabit.

Broadband connectivity, along with Rockbridge’s location at the intersection of two major interstate highways, and airline service less than an hour’s drive north or south makes our area accessible to the nation and the world.

With this ability to plug into the larger economy, it’s not surprising that people are discovering that living in the Rockbridge area, with its natural beauty, slower pace of life, quaint college towns and safe and affordable neighborhoods is really attractive.

BARC Electric Cooperative’s broadband subsidiary BARC Connects, has aggressively built hundreds of miles of fiber optic infrastructure in Rockbridge and the cities since it began its rural broadband program in 2017. According to the company it will build over 500 miles of fiber lines in 2021, the largest increase in the history of the program. Arthur Taylor grew up in Lexington, where his father was an engineering professor at VMI. After pursuing a doctorate at Virginia Tech in Mechanical Engineering, he began his career in teaching at Old Dominion University in Norfolk.

wide. Arthur had to transition to virtual teaching within the span of several weeks.

While many teachers use Zoom or other forms of meeting software, Arthur opted to create a small video studio in his home, with two video cameras and several large whiteboards, which functioned much as a chalkboard would in a classroom for showing equations and functions. He felt this was easier for his students to see, as opposed to sharing a computer screen in Zoom. By recording his lectures, he was able to edit them, and the recorded lectures would be available to his students at any time, and could be reviewed by them.

Broadband internet access to his house makes all this possible. He says he’s had no problems with connectivity and the speed has been more than adequate.

Having lived for several decades in Chesapeake, and coming back to Lexington to visit his family here, he began to realize that he really wanted to live here, at least as much as possible. He and his wife, Teresa, bought a townhouse in the county, and began renting it to law students for the school year, and living here during most of the summer.

Living here part-time got the Taylors to thinking how they could spend even more time here, knowing that this was where they wanted to be when Arthur retires.

Several years ago, they bought a home north of Lexington, which allowed them to spend time here during the school year as well as summers.

Fast forward to 2020 and the shutdown of in-person learning on campuses nation-

Professor Taylor expects that classes next fall will be in-person, but he thinks that the work put in to video record the lectures for his classes remain a valuable study tool for his students in the future.

Remote access is changing the way many local organizations provide services. The Rockbridge Area Health Center is using tele-medicine much more than before the pandemic, and this advance will most likely remain another way that the center can provide health services.

We will see more people who want the lifestyle that living here provides, yet working for companies with physical locations hundreds or thousands of miles away. With the increasing availability of broadband internet service in large areas of the county and the cities, this can be nothing but good for the Rockbridge area..

he Chamber of Commerce Serving Lexington, Buena Vista and Rockbridge County traces its origins back almost a century. In January, 1923, a group of over 100 business and civic leaders met at the county courthouse to organize the Lexington Chamber of Commerce.

Later, the Buena Vista Chamber of Commerce was started, and in 2008, the two organizations merged to form the Chamber than now represents and serves all three jurisdictions in the Rockbridge area.

The Chamber supports local businesses and organizations through promotions, training opportunities and networking. It acts as an information source for businesses and individuals considering relocating to the area. In the area of government affairs, it works in concert with other Chambers supporting legislation that benefits the business climate hereand organizes local candidate forums every year.
