Kayak Fishing Trails

Self-guided paddles show the way for kayaking and fishing

T

he 2017 summer intern chores of William Wolfson have produced a bonanza for anyone interested in fishing from a kayak in Cedar Key area waters.

Kayak Fishing Trails – featuring six paddling trips – is a product of the Nature Coast Biological Station in cooperation with the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge.

The guides serve as a guide to “navigation and fishing tips for catching inshore sport fish in the region,” states the station’s website.

It was a labor of love for Wolfson, who served as an undergraduate summer intern with the the biological station.

“The goals of my internship was to inspire paddlers and other outdoor enthusiasts to visit the Nature Coast and to enjoy the many fishing opportunities that this region has to offer”, Wolfson explains in a blog he wrote for the station’s website.

The guides include narratives and maps which show paddlers how: - To navigate the waters of that particular trail.

- To find fish along the way, and suggestions for which baits to try.

- To look out for hazards along the way.

- To understand and calculate the best times of the tides to catch fish.

he Lower Suwannee Wildlife Refuge encourages visitors to enter bird sightings on the eBird online checklist program. For more information about eBird go to: http://ebird.org/content/ ebird/about/eBirdTrail Tracker Launched in 2002 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, eBird Trail Tracker is a real-time, online checklist

program that has revolutionized the way that the birding community reports and accesses information about birds.

A birder simply enters when, where, and how they went birding, then fills out a checklist of all the birds seen and heard during the outing. The observations of each participant join those of others in an international network of eBird users.

Cedar Key Community Garden

I

t’s a place where veggies and art come together and sometimes become one.

It’s a place where whimsy, natural beauty and education also merge and beckon visitors.

It’s the Cedar Key Community Garden featuring 23 tabletop and five raised plant beds on the ground that overflow with vegetables and showy flowers all grown organically.

Art, in a variety of forms and mediums, is scattered throughout the facility.

The community garden entrance is located on the north side of 2nd Street east of the landmark Island Hotel between A and B streets.

The garden features shaded seating areas where visitors can relax while enjoying the fascinating

blend or horticulture and art gallery.

The garden offers free seed packets and an opportunity to leave comments and donations.

Clam tours Disc Golf

or many years, Cedar Key’s Cemetery Point Park has been popular with birders, Well now there’s something else that can be observed flying through the skies – discs.

The park is now home to an eight-hole disc golf course that might lack in distance and other factors, but it more than makes up for that with some spectacular scenery.

Cemetery Point Park is located at 16050 E. Point Drive, Cedar Key, and also feature some workout stations.

You won’t have to hang around long for the bats to put on their daily display

O

ne of the best wildlife sights in the area is available for viewing any evening of the year. It is free of charge and happens around sunset daily at the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge.

Along the entrance road to Refuge Headquarters (16450 NW 31st Pl, Chiefland FL 32626, just off highway 347) are a pair of large bat houses. These houses are home to approximately 30,000 bats.

Most of them are Brazilian free-tailed bats, Florida’s most common species.

Every evening near sunset they all leave the houses in the span of a few minutes. It is an amazing sight to see.

The exact time the bats depart the house varies from day to day but is usually shortly before or after sunset. If you check the time of local sunset and arrive a few minutes beforehand you will probably see the bats depart within the next 20 minutes or so.

In addition to the spectacle of thousands of bats taking wing at once, there are often hawks or owls that show up in hopes of a free meal. They are usually able to catch one bat before the bats have dispersed- by the time they are able to eat the first one, the rest are long gone.

You should stay outside the fence around the bat houses while viewing the bats. They pay no mind to humans as they depart, but you don’t want to get so close that you disturb them or have an unwanted collision. To avoid the possibil-

ity of being sprinkled by bat droppings, wear a hat or stay in your vehicle.

As the bats fly overhead, you will notice a distinctive odor. This is a musk that bats use to mark their territory and distinguish each other. When a mother bat returns to its roosting place, it identifies its own babies by odor.

During daylight hours, bats roost suspended by their feet with head pointed down. Once their feet grasp their roosting spot there is no muscle tension and their metabolic rate is low to conserve energy.

Bats keep their roosting place clean by going to the bottom of the house to eliminate wastes. Bat guano, which you will observe and smell under the bat houses, is highly prized for garden fertilizer.

Bats are not blind- in fact they have good eyesight. They are sometimes presumed to be blind because sight is not the way they find food in the dark- they locate flying insects by echolocation. Echolocation involves producing high-pitched sounds and locating food by distinguishing when their sounds bounce back from flying prey.

Before the bats depart, you may hear a chirping sound that gets louder as they prepare to leave the house. This is not echolocation- they use sounds within the range of human hearing to communicate with each other.

Refuge’s outdoor sites still welcoming visitors, but guidelines must be followed While outdoor sites remain open at the Lower Suwannee and Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuges during the current coronavirus pandemic, visitors are urged to follow Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines.

Maintain adequate social distancing, avoid overcrowding and exercise good hygiene. If a parking lot is full when you visit, please do not stop.

Pay strict attention to social distancing guidance and do not crowd overlooks, piers, or viewing areas by

compromising this guidance.

Refugee officials understand that the outdoors can help relieve stress, but these guidelines must be followed for our public health and safety. For now, the refuge visitor center and other public facilities are closed and most scheduled events have been postponed.

Cedar Key State Museum

S

ea shells, native American artifacts collected by Saint Clair Whitman and other exhibits related to Cedar Key’s history as a thriving port and railroad connection are featured at the Cedar Key State Museum.

In addition to the historic items, Whitman’s restored home reflecting life in

the 1920s is located at the park along with a short nature trail offering wildlife, birds and native vegetation.

The facility, located at 12231 S.W. Court, is open Thursday through Monday.

Lower Suwannee Wildlife Refuge

T

his unique refuge protects one of the largest underdeveloped riverdelta estuarine systems in The United States, the lower 20 miles of the famous Suwannee River.

It’s headquarters is located near Cedar Key at 16450 NE 31St Place, Chiefland.

Just a short walk from the headquarters, visitors will find a huge bat house for Brazilian free-tail bats. Just past the bat house there’s a nature trail to the Suwannee River.

One half mile to the south, the 9-mile

nature drive winds through several habitats and by an observation deck where a variety of birds and baby gators can be seen.

Ten miles south, Shell Mound offers a fishing pier, kayak launch, and an interpretive trail across a 6,000 year old archaeological site. The interpreted Dennis Creek Trail features wayside signs, foot bridges across a salt barren, and an observation deck for bird lovers.

Cedar Key Arts Center

A

t 457 Second Street visitors will find the essence of creativity at the Cedar Key Arts Center.

The center features a sculpture garden, a main gallery and an artists co-op all driven by the desire to nurture and encourage the arts by providing facilities and educational programs including a photo lab.

From November to May a special treat is offered when the boat builders gather

at the center at 9 a.m. each Wednesday to ply their skills and share their knowledge.

Nature Coast Biological Station

T

he newest addition to Cedar Key’s waterfront area is Nature Coast Biological Station located at 552 1st Street.

The three story facility, part of the University of Florida’s Institute for Food and Agricultural Science (IFAS), fits into the historical character of Cedar Key. It was dedicated in September 2017 for research to support hard clam aquaculture and provide office space for scientists at the station and temporary office and accommodations for visiting scientists, graduate students and technicians.

The first floor features a wet lab and an aquarium.

Waccasassa Bay Preserve State Park

A

nglers love the Waccasassa Bay Preserve State Park because of the availability of both freshwater and saltwater wildlife.

Accessible only by water, the preserve borders the gulf coast between Cedar Key and Yankeetown and features extensive salt marshes and tidal creeks which create habitats for saltwater fish, crabs, and shellfish.

The park’s uplands protect a remnant of the gulf hammock that once spanned thousands of acres between the Suwannee and Withlacoochee rivers. Endangered and threatened species-including West Indian

manatees, bald eagles, American alligators, and Florida black bears live or feed within the preserve.

Although there aren’t any marked foot trails, nature enthusiasts can enjoy wildlife viewing from a canoe or kayak. There are several primitive campsites on the preserve, accessible only by private boat and are available on a first-come-firstserved basis.

Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve

H

iking, off-road biking, picnicking, canoeing and kayaking, fishing and birdwatching are some of the popular activities at the Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve.

The park, located on State Road 24 about five miles from Cedar Key is located in an area where the salt marshes along the gulf give way to swamps, forests and scrub areas which provides great wildlife observation and nature study.

The scrub is dominated by species such as sand live oak, myrtle oak and Chapman’s oak, along with rusty lyonia and saw palmetto.

Hikers and off-road bicyclists hoping to have a variety of Florida habitats will find them on the miles of trails that meander through the park. Numerous

creeks near the salt marshes are ideal for canoeing and kayaking. Kayak rentals are available in Cedar Key.

Cedar Key Historical Museum

T

he history of Cedar Key is alive and thoroughly documented at the Cedar Key Historical Society Museum, operated by the Cedar Key Historical Society.

The society is dedicated to serving as a steward of the unique heritage of Cedar Key, one of the oldest cities in Florida, and its surrounding areas. The facility itself – the Lutterloh building - has its own story and has hosted the society’s collection since its opening in 1979.

The museum, located at the intersection of Second Street and State Road 24, is open from 1 to 4 p.m.

Cedar Key Museum State Park Visitors can take a stroll through nature even though museum is closed It’s a museum.

No, it’s a nature park.

No, it’s a historic home.

Oh wait, it’s actually all three of those things and is called the Cedar Key Museum State Park.

What started as displays in a room of St. Clair Whitman’s home that was once featured in a story in the National Geographic magazine is now a popular stop for visitors to Cedar Key. “Quiet and peaceful, but full of history and wildlife. The views were beautiful and the ranger was very knowledgable,” one visitor wrote in an online review.

The 18-acre site features the main museum building, Whitman’s home, a nature trail and a primitive kayak launch.

Limited visitation at state park

Cedar Key Museum State Park is open with limited visitation as of July 2, 2020. The museum remains closed until further notice. Restroom availability may be limited. Visitors are expected to maintain distances of at least six feet apart.

Nature trail

The nature trail, which remains open, offers birding opportunities, particularly in the fall and winter when the migratory birds arrive. The trail leads down to a salt marsh where wading birds like roseate spoonbills, American avocets, and white ibis can be viewed during the low tide.

The trail also features native vegetation. Wildlife likely to be spotted include gray squirrels, doves, mockingbirds, blue jays, woodpeckers and green tree frogs.

An unimproved canoe/kayak launch is available along the nature trail.

Portage is required.

Museum

The facility contains exhibits depicting the towns’ colorful history.

Part of the collection has seashells and Indian artifacts collected by Saint Clair Whitman, the founder of the first museum in Cedar Key. The grounds are landscaped with native Florida vegetation, including sand pine, slash pine, southern red cedar, live oak, sabal palm, wax myrtle, saw palmetto, continued on Page 22

The exhibits themselves are a source of great pride for the facility. They were designed by a team from the University of Florida, which at the time was designing all of the state park system’s museums and feature incredible hand-craftsmanship from the 1960s.

Whitman’s home

Whitman’s home is currently closed while undergoing a restoration project so the house, when completed, will make sure the structure continues to reflect what life was like in Cedar Key in the 1920s.

Whitman moved to Cedar Key in the last 1800s and was involved in two of Cedar Keys historic industries – the cedar pencil mill and the fiber factor.

He was also an avid collector who amassed an impressive collection of seashells and Native American

artifacts. Some of that material was displayed for the public to view in a room of Whitman’s home. He arranged to donate his collection to the state for the purpose of developing the museum, which opened in 1962.

“The Whitman home from 1920 has been kept in really good condition.

This is a must see if visiting Cedar Key,” one visitor commented.

John Muir did in fact spend a few months in Cedar Key in 1867 and his time spent in the little town is commemorated with a state historic marker which is located on the museum grounds.

The noted naturalist and conversation leader arrived in October after a seven-week walk from Indiana on a ”thousand-mile walk to the Gulf.” His journal of the adventure was published in 1916, two years after his death included glimpses of the quality of life in the post-Civil War south.

he Cedar Key City Marina is located in the heart of the town with an automated kiosk to accept your launch fees The daily fee is $15 for cash and $16 for debit and credit cards. Annual passes are available at city hall Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 352-543-5132 for information.

Short-term tie up slips are available free on a first-come first-serve basis. Slips are marked.

Currently because of the new bridge construction, the basin-side ramp opens around mid-day Friday and remains open for the weekend, closing again Monday morning.
