What to write. .

I

usually have an idea of what I’m going to write before I actually sit down and start typing. This time, I don’t.

So, I asked my 15 year old daughter for advice. Her suggestion? Write about her. I laughed at first, thinking, ‘What a typical teenage response.’ Then I thought about it some more.

The kid is going through a lot right now. At 15, Calle has watched the end of her freshman year slip away. Her birthday was celebrated via drive-by honking and singing. She missed the fun end of the archery season she had worked so hard for. She’s gone through the emotions of having her sister commit to a college four hours away.

We shouldn’t be so quick to forget that being a teenager is hard.

It’s not my kind of hard. My version of teenage America was less reliant on technology and maybe a little more concerned with parties. Today’s teenagers could not get away with all the things I got away with simply because there is more evidence at our fingertips now. I believe my parents lived blissfully unaware, while evidence of my kids’ wrongdoings usually comes from a notification to my phone.

Calle is such a good kid. And I mean good in every sense of the word. She is so fiercely and unapologetically true to herself. Sometimes that is a lot of attitude and sass. Sometimes that means defending her friends a little too much. Sometimes that means standing up to those same friends and telling them they’re being dumb.

She is scared of pretty much everything, though. She is scared of the dark (the outside dark, not the inside dark; there’s a difference). People walking down our road (our busy, well-populated road) freak her out. She doesn’t even like to order her own food in restaurants.

She’s not what I call a “warm fuzzy.” I have to ask her for hugs. She’s not going to sugar coat anything.

But, I know I’m doing something right when she comes downstairs, flops down on the couch right beside me and tells me she has a story for me. She always ends up snuggling up beside me and talking for hours.

The picture above was after waking up at 3 a.m., driving 4 hours, a softball camp, driving 4 hours home, driving 3 hours to a softball game, winning that game and playing a second. In February. We were tired, slap happy and cold. But, she’s always my partner on those long days. We always have a good time.

She doesn’t have to tell me she loves me every second of the day for me to know it. When she says, “Ugh, mom, you’re so stupid,” with that smirk on her face, I know. You’re stupid, too, Calle.

yra Teal has packed a couple lifetimes into her years. And now that she’s retired, she’s working harder than ever.

Myra worked her way from freelance photographer to publisher of the Boonville Standard in the 1980s and 1990s. She left the Standard after 20 years to join Edward Jones. She worked there another 20 years before retiring.

Now she’s getting back into an old passion -

bee keeping.

“I had bees in the ‘70s,” Myra said. “I did this ‘back to the land’ thing. Everyone was doing it back in the ‘70s. I had a couple of hives in Lynnville.”

As her career in journalism get more intensive, her time for her bees diminished. One winter, hunters kicked her hives over and shot them. Her bees were gone.

18 July/August 2020 “I always wanted to have bees ever since then,” she said. “My 70th birthday, my husband said, ‘Wow, this is a big birthday. We need to do something special. What do you want?’ I said, ‘I want a beehive.’ I kind of surprised him a little bit.”

For awhile, she kept the bees at her Newburgh home. Her backyard hive was scheduled to be featured on the Master Gardener’s Garden Walk. At the last minute, organizers decided stinging insects and the general public probably wouldn’t mix, so the idea was nixed. It was just as well for Myra and her husband, Mike. Her childhood friend was looking to add hives to his acreage of reclaimed mine land south of Pelzer.

“I’d talked to Leon,” Myra said. “He wanted bees out there. I wanted them out there. My husband was getting stung. He’ll help me with anything, as long as there’s not a bee around.”

The Teal’s hives are now located on a sprawling piece of property, well hidden from prying eyes and errant hunters. They have plenty of foraging opportunities, too. The proof of that is in the color of the honey.

“He’s got locust trees planted everywhere up there,” she said. “He’s got a lot of different fruit trees. Blackberries just finished blooming. The blackberries are not quite red yet, but they’re beginning. Blackberry pollen is one of the most nutritious pollens for bees. There’s all kinds of stuff out there — bush honeysuckle and autumn olive.

A lot of things are maybe not native plants, but the bees absolutely love them. Then, of course, underlying everything is clover and of course they love that.”

Honey bees are the most notable pollinators globally. They account for 80 percent of the world’s pollination. To put that into perspective, around 60 percent of an average human’s diet is affected by pollination.

“I remember seeing a poster and it was a chocolate sundae,” Myra said.” I’m thinking, ‘What’s a chocolate sundae have to do with bees?’ Cocoa, that has to be polinated before we can produce chocolate. Milk, you wouldn’t think cows would need that, but they eat alfafa, all the different clover. All of that has to be pollinated before there’s seed to plant more. It just goes on and on. We need bees for all kinds of things. We’re quickly killing them off with all of the pesticides we use.”

When bees forage in fields treated with pesticide,

they bring it back to the hive. The typical worker bee only has a life expectancy of 50 to 60 days, but the queen bee can live for one to three years.

“Queens have been known to live three, four even five years,” Myra said. “Typically, they don’t...

That’s under ideal conditions. We don’t have ideal conditions nearly any place anymore. That wax cone gets poisoned with insecticide.”

The job of the queen is to lay all of the eggs. But, it’s the job of the worker bees to make the queen.

A typical queen will lay 1,500 eggs a day. As she gets older and the number decreases, worker bees will select a larvae, put it in a special cell and feed it royal jelly until it cocoons itself and emerges a queen.

Sometimes, though, it’s more of a civil war thing.

There’s no killing of the queen, but there is a bit of a war.

“That’s what causes bees to swarm, when the hive gets too crowded,” Myra said. “The old queen bee will take a bunch of new bees with her and they’ll go find another nest someplace. Then, those old bees will take that egg, turn it into another queen cell and there’s a new queen. That’s how they keep that hive going. It’s magic.”

Those swarms sometimes end up in some pretty inconvenient spots - like trees near homes or on decks or patios. Last year, Myra responded to five calls regarding swarms of bees. This year, she’s already responded to a dozen.

“Last year was the first year I’ve ever done it,” she said. “I caught five swarms. I couldn’t believe it. It’s so scary and so much fun at the same time.

This year, I’ve caught 12. So, I have a lot more beehives out there now than I ever imagined I would have.”

To catch a swarm, she brings a special box, places it on top of a tarp on the ground and simply gives the limb of the tree a good shake. Most of the bees fall right into the box.

“Now, some are going to fly and they’re going to be all over the place,” she said. “But typically, when they’re in swarm mode, they don’t sting.”

That new hive is taken to her private hive and given food, since they have none and no sources scouted out yet.

“This year, catching all those swarms kept me busier than I ever imagined,” she said. “But the fun calls kept coming in and I kept running after bees.

20 July/August 2020 kind of misnamed. It’s 100 percent honey, but the process it goes through makes it almost peanut butter consistency.

“If you put honey in the refrigerator, it’s going to get little crystals in the bottom,” Myra explained.

“You take those crystals and you grind those in a (mortar and pestle) until your arm feels like it’s going to fall off. It turns into a thick, creamy, milky looking substance. It just gets into a different substance. You take that and mix one part of that with nine part of honey. You stir that very slowly. It’s not whipped; you don’t want to add air into it. It’s not creamed because you don’t add cream to it.

It’s nothing but pure honey. It goes through a process. Once that’s whipped in, you put it in jars, put it in the refrigerator for... anywhere from two weeks to a month. Those crystals all replicate each other.

The reason for breaking down those big, hard crystals that feel like sand into tiny little crystals, it makes that texture creamy. It makes it real smooth like a smooth peanut butter... I can’t make enough of it. I run out of honey anyway, but I started making that last year and anyone that has ever tasted it, that’s what they want.”

Myra said it’s hard to judge how much time per week she spends with her hives — partly because some months are more time-intensive than others and partly because she spends a lot of the time enjoying the beauty of nature while she’s there.

She has a wood slab table and stools made out of pieces of a tree that was destroyed by a recent tornado. While the area is mowed, it’s largely untouched. It’s how she originally fell in love with beekeeping — getting back to the land.

It’s the version of Myra Teal she’s come back to. She’s spent 20 years in media, 20 years in finance and her retirement is dedicated to her the powerhouse of the insect world.

“I’ve always enjoyed everything I’ve ever done,” she said. “So now I’m into retirement and beekeeping Agent and physically working harder than 812.897.0590 I’ve ever worked. Most people give 3050 Warrick Drive | Boonville up beekeeping in their 70s and I’ve just now taken it up again.”

in a box and they have no food sources at all. They have to build all that up. So, I would keep a jar of sugar water of syurup or something for them to eat. So I’m still doing that with some of my newer hives.”

For her older hives, she has taken to splitting them to keep them from swarming.

“You take some of the bees, put them in another box and hope that they’ll either build their own queen cell, hatch out their own queen, or, I’ve been able to go and buy queens from people who raise them,” she said.

So far, she’s harvested 10 frames of honey this season. Each frame weighs in between 7 and 8 pounds. It’s a balancing act - she has to leave enough honey for the bees to survive, but the excess is fair game. The window for harvesting is fairly small, as well.

“When it gets toward the middle of the summer, you want to start leaving that honey on there,” she said. “A hive around here, if we have a normal winter, a beehive has to have about 60 pounds of honey left on that hive to survive the winter. That’s their food. They don’t really produce that for us like a lot of people think. Each hive is really different. A good, full hive, I probably would only take about 40 to 50 pounds of honey.”

R

icky Bob Yeager was born and raised in Boonville by kind and loving parents. He and his brothers formed a close bond that still exists today.

After he graduated from Boonville High School, he went off to attend Purdue University. Following his graduation with honors and a medical degree, he went into private practice in Boonville for 10 years. When the new Warrick Hospital came along, he joined the staff and worked there for over 20 years, the majority of this time as Head of the Emergency Room.

There is no doubt that Dr. Yeager was one of the best things that ever happened to this new hospital. Not only was he responsible for saving countless lives, he did it all with such ease and kindness. In October of 2001, he had what he believed was mild bronchitis that lasted about three weeks. After the cough and mild aching eventually resolved, he continued to remain tired. Very tired. His vision began to change. An MRI was ordered . As a doctor, he had ordered countless MRIs for his patients,

but he had never had one himself.

The schan revealed three lesions inside his head. The diagnosis was Muscular Dystrophy — not good.

For as long as he could, Dr. Yeager continued to walk on the treadmill at home and do chores around the homeplace. In spring 2006 as he was clearing some brush from the pasture fences at his country home, he felt such weakness in his arms and legs that he barely could make it back to the house. He told his wife that

same day that she needed to see about selling the horses because he could no longer care for them.

In 2007, he talked with the MS specialist about when he should consider retirement. The specialist said that had to be his own decision. His wife, Debbie, kept encouraging him to continue for as long as he could. He respected her good insight, but there was always this anxiety within him that something might happen in the Emergency Room that he couldn’t handle. Something that he physically did not have the strength for. He prayed about it every day.

A quote from Dr. Yeager’s book: “Every morning, I put on my scrubs, draped the signature doctor’s stethescope around my neck and walked into ER. There, I worked with all of the responsibilities, demands and skills expected of an emergency room physician. But, at the end of the shift, I would go home exhausted, knowing that my body was doing less than it had a few months ago.” The staff at Warrick Hospital was great. By the end of 2008, both his Neurologist and his wife knew that his career as a doctor should be ended. He knew it too.

At one point, Dr. Yeager and his friend, Mary Ellen Ziliack, co-wrote a very personal book. Mary Ellen Ziliack was suffering from MS. The book was titled “Behind The Red Door.” This amazing effort literally opened the door to those on the outside as to how difficult it is to have to deal with the dramatic challenges of something like a neurological disorder every day. by profession, has since become a Certified Specialist in MS. She also serves as an Ambassador and International Speaker on the subject.

t’s not exactly something you can prepare for.

Dr. Heidi M. Dunniway, M.D., the Regional Chief Medical Officer for St. Vincent Warrick, said her training prepared those in the medical field for the possibility of something like the COVID-19 pandemic happening, but their experience proved to be their downfall.

“It’s something we all learn about in medical school and we know it is possible, but I think that

we all had been maybe a little more comfortable than we normally would have been,” she said.

“When SARS first appeared maybe 20 years ago, and MERS, which are also those coronaviruses; MERS was about 10 years ago, there was concern that they could spread rapidly and we could end up in a type of situation that we did. Fortunately, that didn’t happen. There were fears of that also with Ebola, which is a very different type of infection, so I

BoonvilleView.com 27 don’t mean to draw an exact parallel, but there was a lot of concern that could spread globally and it didn’t. So, yes, there were preparations in place that we learned from the threat of those particular infections, but I think we had a little false sense that it may not happen because those had stopped before they spread widely. So, yes, we knew it could happen. Yes, we had some preparations in place. But no, we were not prepared as a whole across the world for the extent that this virus actually affected our lives.”

St. Vincent Warrick saw very few suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19. Those they did see were either not extreme enough to require hospitalization or were transferred to the Evansville hospital.

“Patients that were sicker, patients that were more ill, who were expected of having COVID or had it, we tended to tranfer to our Evansville hospital, just because we had a better capacity to keep them separated from the other patients,” Dr. Dunniway said. “But, most of the patients they saw that were suspected or had it, they did not need to be hospitalized. ment,” Mark said. “We make it such that our employees participate heavily in community involvement. I think we had 500 volunteer hours for local charities last year. It’s our way of paying back the community that has supported this bank for 125 years.”

Dan said Peoples Trust and Savings Bank built the first Habitat house in Warrick County for its 100th anniversary. The bank was able to fully and solely fund that project.

“Through different initiatives and fundraisers and charities, we try to give back,” Dan said. “It’s important to us.”

The pandemic has paused the bank’s charity, but Mark said they’ve been heavily involved in the revitalization of downtown Boonville.

“We were financially involved with the development of Johnson Park, the Harold Gunn Pavilion and a lot of the projects with Boonville Now,” Mark said. “We’ve really enjoyed a good working relation-

said they’ve always strived to be a safe and sound choice. That is their secret to success.

“I think it’s a couple of different things,” he said.

“One, you’ve got to run a safe and sound bank or you’re not going to be around very long no matter how nice a guy you are. We’re very proud of our conservativeness and maintaining ourselves as a nationally-ranked bank in safety and soundness.

downtown,” Mark said. “Any time we get people downtown, they’re going to see us. Any time they see a business, it’s a positive. I think that the time and effort and expense that they’ve put into the downtown is paying off for us, just like it is everywhere downtown.”

Dan said the new branch has been in the works for more than a year now. The goal is to have it done by the end of 2020, but it may realistically open in early 2021.

“We’ve taken our time and designed a very attractive building,” he said. “It’s been a fun adventure.”

The ultimate goal is to leave a little bit of Boonville’s small town charm in the bigger city.

“We’re a small bank compared to other institutions,” he said. “If we can maintain that small bank customer service, but still be competitive with our products and technology, we think that will translate into success in any market.”

nimal Control facilities and shelters are limited by the amount of space they have to house the influx of animals arriving daily.

Different organizations have foster programs for a multitude of situations. All programs are not the same, but they do all benefit the animals in some way. There are even foster-based rescues that rely solely on homes to temporarily house animals until they can be adopted. Adoption events and social media are very helpful when getting these animals placed.

Foster programs, of course, can be for any animal, but with the greatest need in our area being cats and kittens we tend to focus on that species.

According to The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), there are several reasons why fostering animals save lives: • Fostering saves the lives of neonate and pee wee kittens.

• Fostering provides a safe and healthy environment for kittens to grow.

• Cats living in a home often receive more attention, which helps relieve their stress.

• Fostered kittens are likely to be better sensitized to the world they’ll face when adopted.

• Fostering helps prevent the births of more unwanted homeless cats.

Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter in Montana notes, “When kittens and puppies are brought to the shelter at an early age their development is critical. It is important to the kittens and puppies to be socialized, and monitored properly over the course of the few weeks after birth. Because kittens and puppies have vulnerable immune systems, a foster home is a better environment for young animals to build active immunities against disease. Kittens often come into a shelter weighing about a pound and need to gain the appropriate weight for their spay or neuter surgeries. A foster home is a good place for these kittens to pack on the ounces.”

Some foster homes may only be to house a pet for a week, while others may be for months. There is a lot of flexibility with what your time commitment is and how long you are willing to help. Some programs allow you to adopt your fosters and others may not allow you be a “Foster Failure.” With so many options, there is usually a foster program with a group to fit your desires to help homeless animals.

For us at Warrick County Animal Control (WCAC),

we don’t have a foster program. But that is where Warrick Animal Guardians (WAG) literally comes to the rescue. WAG is the non-profit that funds all the medical care, and most food, litter and supplies needed at WCAC that the county does not supply.

After relaxation of restrictions from the initial Covid19 pandemic, Warrick Animal Guardians took 21 animals into foster care in one weeks’ time. These are animals that if left at an open admission facility could have been in danger due to lack of space or illness.

Most of the animals pulled into foster care were kittens that were too young to be adopted out. These kittens went into a foster home until they were able to be altered and get adopted. Currently, half the kittens have been altered and found homes. But we are always looking for more foster homes.

The more people willing to temporarily foster, the more animals can be saved. WAG’s foster program provides all the food, litter and preventative medical care until they are able to be adopted out. If you are interested in becoming a foster home, please contact WCAC at 812-897-6107 to set up a meeting and discuss options with WAG’s program. Warrick Humane Society, located at 5722 Vann Road (812-858-1132), and PAAWS Foster Based Rescue (812-490-1039), both also have foster programs.

The beach at Scales Lake is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The water slide remains closed. The beach is only open to 100 people at a time, so going early is key.

Play ball!

It’s been months since we’ve seen live sports. Get your fix at the annual Indiana USSSA Great Lakes Nationals softball tournament July 14 through 19 at the Boonville Junior League Fields, Newburgh Girls Softball fields, Deaconess Sports Park in Evansville and Newman Park in Henderson.

This tournament brings in softball players of all ages from around the region. More than 250 teams have already registered for the event.

The event kicks off with opening ceremo-

nies - which usually includes a parade and pin trading - on Monday. Details will be announced soon on http://www.gln-inusssa. net/.

Age groups range from 8 and under to 18 and under. Skills competitions will take place Tuesday at Deaconess Sports Park.

Pool play begins Wednesday and runs through Thursday. Bracket play and championships start Friday.

Gate fees are $10 per day or $35 for the week.

A

t the time I’m writing this, Purdue has officially been in teleworking status for 84 days. For us Extension educators in the county, that means we are teleworking too. For an office that’s main mission revolves around direct education for the community, this announcement brought about many cancelations and program rewrites. We know the whole community has been disrupted and we wanted to share some of the creative programming we have been offering.

For 4H and Youth Development Educator Carla Kidwell, it meant shifting some school programming to a virtual format.

Excitingly, the first ADULTING 101 class kicked off June 1.

It’s a four week virtual experience for any youth in grades 8-12. Topics focus on resume building, creating cover letters, budgeting, interviewing, etiquette, stress management and self care. Some other online programming offerings have included: a Dungeons and Dragons game group, Milk 101 – A Virtual Stem lesson, 4-H Animal Science web series, and some Space Science lessons in honor of the Falcon 9 launch.

To address Ag and Natural Resources community needs, educator Amanda Mosiman and the SW IN educator team started an AREA 3 ANR YouTube channel to capture timely landscaping maintenance videos, DIY project ideas around the house, and address assorted lawncare topics. Additionally, many publications have been released to help farmers and those that sell their products direct to consumers (Farmers Market, Roadside stands) look at alternative marketing choices and new best management practice for safety. An At home Butchering step by step guide was released to help families looking at sourcing their own pork this summer as well. Some virtual programming offerings have included crop market analysis webinars, HR and employer skills for farm leaders, farm financial trainings, and home horticulture.

It is a fact that the COVID pandemic is having an impact on people’s financial situations. So, Health and Human Science Educator Jo Gilreath got to work on helping families navigate this loss of income. Perry and Warrick County HHS Educators

teamed up to present a one-hour webinar titled “Taking Control When Your Income Drops.” Perry County Chamber streamed the webinar live on their Facebook page May 1 and the recording is available on their page. Purdue Extension’s goal was to provide an educational experience where attendees walked away with an increased sense of control over one’s financial situation, increased knowledge on how to make a spending plan, the ability to consciously differentiate “needs” versus “wants” and know where and how to access community resources. A resource handout was provided as well as links to additional information related to managing finances and stress. Jo and Casey, Warrick Community Wellness Coordinator, are cohosting with SWCD, the Add A Row program” for gardeners to plant an extra row for food pantry donations this summer.

As you can see, we’ve made our best

effort to adapt programming efforts to these new challenges and opportunities; however, the single largest disappointment has been the necessity to take the 4-H Fair to an online only, virtual format. This heart wrenching decision was made with the whole community’s safety in mind. Our organizing partner, the Warrick County Center Board came to the same conclusion about the public parts of the fair. We know the fair is a favorite summer activity, but sadly, it’s not meant to be. Please be on the lookout for our 4-H youth showcases of projects as we hope to post them to social media in July to highlight the great learning experiences our kids have worked on.

A note from the school...

Over the last three months, the Food & Nutrition Department has had the privilege to serve over 250,000 breakfast and lunch meals to the students and children in our community!

As you may have heard or read, the WCSC Food & Nutrition Department took a financial hit during the school closure. However, I want to assure you this was not due to the meals we have been providing our community.

The Food & Nutrition Department is a self-supporting entity of the Warrick County School Corporation. This means we do not receive funds from the school corporation to operate our program so we must rely on the money students pay for meals and ala carte items each day. During the school closure, we did not receive any of these necessary funds; however, we continued to pay our 150 Food & Nutrition Department employees, as laying anyone off was not an option we would consider.

For this reason, we were required to dip into any reserve funds we had to cover expenses incurred during the school closure. The Grab n’ Go meals, most importantly, have allowed us to provide nutritious breakfast and lunch meals to the children in our community and has given those children a sense of normalcy and something to look forward to each day. In addition, because each meal provided to our community is funded by the USDA, we have been able to recoup some of the financial loss our department experienced during the school closure with the reimbursement received for each meal served.

The most effective way you can help the Food & Nutrition Department is to participate in our Grab n’ Go meals so that we can continue to offer them to our community throughout the summer which will also help us recoup financial losses that impacted our program during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Free “Grab and Go” meals are available for anyone 18 years of age and younger.

These meals are available at Tecumseh Junior/Senior High, Chandler Elementary, Oakdale Elementary, Sharon Elementary and Tennyson Elementary schools Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A Saturday breakfast and luch is provided with the Friday meal pick up.
