People who visit Saline County often remark about how friendly and welcoming the people in the area are, and the people of Marshall are no exception. It doesn’t take long for newcomers to get to know people here, to feel like they belong. Those who are new in town will often have people introduce themselves and invite the newcomer to join their church or their service organization or their club. Traffic is slower — the speed limit on most city streets is 25 mph — but it still only takes a few minutes to get from one end of town to the other. And traffic jams are unheard of. Maybe that reflects the pace of life out in the middle of Midwest farmland, but for those coming here from the honking horns and roaring jets that provide the background music of urban areas, the relative quiet is often a blessing. Marshall is in the heart of a county that itself is in the heart of Missouri farmland. In addition to growing many acres of corn and soybeans, area farmers raise cattle and hogs. But the background music here is not just the slow, sonorous “moo” of grazing cows — we have a brass section, too.

The happenings of the city The background music in Marshall in the summer is the trumpets and trombones of the Marshall Municipal Band, the second oldest community band in the state.The band plays every Thursday evening during the summer months, bringing a wide range of music to the town square. The band is only one of the cultural mainstays of the city and its environs. Marshall has its own philharmonic orchestra, its own community chorus, and a growing number of visual artists. In addition to the events generated by the arts, there are festivals and other events regularly.The completion in late 2007 of the new Shirley Martin Memorial Community Center and Nicholas-Beazley Aviation Museum, and an amphitheater renovation in 2017, have given a boost to the city’s potential as a host for a variety of events, small and large. Like many places, a good deal of commercial activity has migrated to the edge of town, in this case along either side of U.S. Highway 65. But unlike some places, Marshall has managed to support a thriving downtown at the same time. The downtown square, surrounded by retail outlets, restaurants, banks, antique stores, the historic Saline County Courthouse and other businesses, continues to be the heart of the community, the place where many of the biggest events take place.

The park, at the east end of Marshall, has a beautiful aquatic center, skateboard park and golf course, also an all inclusive playground, tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball and softball diamonds, a number of shelter houses with electricity, walking and biking trails, a creek for wading and a disc golf course developed by volunteers.

The area consists of more than 5,000 acres of Missouri River bottomlands, including wetlands, adjacent river islands, agricultural units, and timber tracts. Area development includes levees and water control structures.Waterways and pumps help manage these Missouri River wetlands and restore and maintain habitat for migratory wetland species and associated resident wildlife.

The park features hiking trails, including several that climb over bluffs that provide breath-taking views of the Missouri River valley, an 18-acre lake for fishing, a campground and the Oumessourit Natural Area, which consists of a freshwater marsh, fens and bottomland and upland forests. Picnic sites and two picnic shelters are nestled under lofty trees. The visitor’s center has been converted into Missouri’s American Indian Cultural Center, where the park staff maintains displays and hosts regular lectures and informative demonstrations on the lives of the region’s indigenous population.

For five months each year, a mix of professional and amateur actors, dancers, singers and production staff from all over the U.S. come to little Arrow Rock to create theater magic at the Lyceum. Cast members and crew who hale from urban areas often marvel at the quaint and quiet atmosphere in Arrow Rock, and audience members flock from around the state to see top-notch musical and dramatic performances.

Its members come from all walks of life and represent every age group. Each member gives of their time and talent to prepare free concerts open to the public. The choir presents three concerts per season in addition to performances at various functions and events in the community. In addition to its regular season performances, the chorus collaborates with the Marshall Philharmonic Orchestra. Now in its 30th season, the choice continues to delight young and old who attend its performances. You need not be a professional to be a part of this community chorus – come and sing with us!
Marshall Municipal Band
Kevin Lines, Director mmbdirector@gmail.com 660-815-0097 The Marshall Municipal Band is one of just six such bands in Missouri, and it is the second oldest in the state.The band performs Thursday evenings on the Marshall square during the summer, in addition to traveling concerts in other towns in the area and at the Missouri State Fair. The current roster of about 45 players from Saline County and the surrounding area has many long-time members, but newcomers are always welcome to add their talents. Organized in 1921, the 20 original members were led by Ray Hillings.The band has been under the supervision of the city of Marshall since May of 1934, when citizens authorized a tax levy to support it. In 1948, the city invested $2,800 in new uniforms and instruments. Among those following Hillings as band director were Cecil Hough, a Marshall city engineer; Royal Claycomb, a former member of the U.S. Marine Band; E.J. Eckles (1933 to 1965), Michael Waters (1965 to 1974), Stanley Westbrook (1975 to 1979), Charles Ferguson (1980 to 2000), and Kevin L. Lines first conducted the group in its 1997 season, and returned in 2001. The band plays a wide range of music, from Sousa marches to Broadway musical scores to adaptations of folk music from around the world. In 2011, a septet of MMB musicians formed the MMB Little Dixie Jazz Band, which debuted in a concert at Jim the Wonder Dog Memorial Garden in August.The band specializes in Dixieland music.
Marshall Philharmonic Orchestra
Kevin Lines, Director marshallphilharmonicorchestra.com 660-815-0097 Marshall has the distinction of being one of the smallest towns nationwide with a full orchestra. The Philharmonic will begin its 58th season in the fall of 2020. The orchestra was founded by local banker Catron Gordon in 1962 and developed by Harold Lickey, a high school chemistry teacher, who also founded the Marshall High School Marching Band in 1941. Lickey was the conductor and musical director from the orchestra’s earliest days until his death in 1990. Charles Ferguson, who succeeded Lickey as conductor, retired in 2007 and was replaced by Kevin L. Lines, who also conducts the Marshall Municipal Band. Ferguson earned the title Conductor Emeritus and continues to play bass in the orchestra, along side his wife, Norma Jeane. MPO performs four concerts each year, as well as a chamber recital Mary Lou Porter,

MPO president, said at the opening of the 45th season, “The Marshall Philharmonic is honored to musically offer the community the ‘best of many worlds,’ amateur/professional, working/retired, young/old. It is a special blending and the wonderful support of our community that makes the organization thrive.” In June 2006, MPO was featured in an Associated Press story, “A small town has room for symphony,” that was picked up by the Los Angeles Times, among other publications.
