A letter from our Chamber President To all our readers, I pray that you are staying safe and well.

In the first edition on the Groesbeck Chamber magazine of 2020 and at our 2020 Annual Banquet, we were excited about all the great events and programs that were scheduled for this year At the Annual banquet in January, the theme was ‘Destination Groesbeck’. It was awesome so see all the creative ways that individuals and companies decorated their tables. Awards were presented including Business of the Year, Organization of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Women of the Year and Community Spirit.

The Groesbeck Independent School District presented awards for the Educators of the Year for each campus, along with Youth Citizen of the year. There were silent auction items which were bid on and larger items that individuals purchased stretch tickets for. Mary Belle Leach provided dinner music and a streaming video reviewed achievements during 2019. The food was catered by TCP Catering and got glowing reviews.

All and all, it was a wonderful event.

Then Covid 19 happened! Who would ever have imagined that our world would so different now with this Covid-19 pandemic.

All chamber director meetings, membership programs and special events have been cancelled until further notice. As most of you know, we have also had to cancel our first Heritage Festival which

was scheduled for the end of May. We will plan on reconvening our committee meetings in the fall to start working on the 2021 Heritage Festival which will also be the celebration of Groesbeck’s 150 year anniversary.

A big thank you to the committee that worked so hard this year, only to have the event cancelled. Your experience will be valuable when we start planning 2021’s event. If you would be interested in joining the committee, please let me know.

RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONIES HELD

The Groesbeck Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting for a brand new business in Groesbeck Friday, March 13. Clean Cut Cleaners is located at 103 W. Navasota in Groesbeck at the corner of Railroad and Navasota Streets. The business opened Monday, March 9 and is currently offering professional dry-cleaning and garment pressing services in downtown Groesbeck.

Owned and operated by Randy and Stephanie Ingram, the business opened to serve the community in dry cleaning, starched pants or shirts and laundry by the pound. Chicken coops provide sustainable food supply From Groesbeck Journal reports Communities nationwide are lacking in some items, but for many, free time is more available than ever. With shortages on commodities like toilet paper, bread and supplies, some have returned to sustainable growing and farming to weather the supply shortage. The starting point for many investing in livestock is small game, such as chickens. The fowl provide a steady supply of eggs in the right conditions, and meat provided that flock numbers are strong.

“Chickens are ready to graduate to the henhouse by six weeks,” reads online information from Tractor Supply Company.

In creating a chicken coop, begin by allocating space for the number of chickens expected.

For each chicken planned, estimate at least two square feet or more of floor space per bird. Nest boxes for the birds to sleep and lay in should be a square foot each, with one nest box per three birds. Dowel rods can also be installed in upper portions of the coop, allowing the birds to roost in the air.

Builders should sketch out the design and measurements before starting, in addition to deciding the type of floor and structure.

“The best part was watching the whole thing come together,” said Jennifer Paul of the Groesbeck Journal, who recently built a chicken coop. The work is still in progress, working on protection from outside threats. She utilized a coop raised above the ground.

Wood floors work for chicken, though should be raised at least six inches from the ground. Cement is a more expensive option and could prove more permanent than wood, but dirt floors work just as well. Multiple two-by-four boards and plywood are commonly used. Structurally, the coop can range from a barn to a lean-to, as long as it provides shelter, climate control and adequate air circulation. The roof can be plywood, or simply metal. Carpenters should remember to allow for a door and floor large enough for human entry and exit.

“Typically, five by 20 feet serves as a good run for six hens,” said James Mullins, who maintains his own flock.

“Hens don’t need a rooster to produce eggs.” Roosters should be introduced only if breeding chickens organically.

Coops should be surrounded by the run, or fenced-space

Chicks are available by incubating eggs, visiting a farm and ranch supply store, or third-party vendor that already has chickens. The chicks should be isolated from threats while maturing and enclosed to stop predators like hawk

around the coop that chickens graze in. If situated in a garden, chickens can be beneficial for eliminating unwanted pests, though they may eat plants in the process. For those interested in garden and yard pest control, research guinea hens.

Research predators in the area. Mullins once arrived to collect eggs, only to find a hawk fully engorged in the henhouse. In the days following, a screen door was applied to allow chickens to enter and exit freely, without allowing for larger predators.

Other predators include snakes, weasels, foxes, dogs, skunks, mink and predatory birds can be stopped by adding layers of chicken wire around and underneath the coop.

Plug any coop holes and consider a screen door with enough space for chickens to move freely.

Ventilating a coop properly is more important than higher insulation. Openings near the ceiling are necessary for air circulation. Chickens enjoy temperatures around 55 degrees, and require waterers, two to three inches of straw or wood shavings, according to Tractor Supply. Change

www.groesbeckchamber.com bedding in nest boxes about once a month. A combination of stale bread and chicken feed is a prime diet for Mullins’ chickens, in addition to some vegetable scraps. For chickens that have difficulty with eggshell consistency, ground oyster shell and other supplements can be added to food.

Chicks can be purchased in spring, with some options to order online and have them shipped live. Of course, those interested can always consult their chicken-savvy friends with a current flock.

Day-old chicks will produce eggs in roughly six months.

Ready to lay chicks, also called pullets, are 20 weeks old and about to start laying, according to information provided at www.tractorsupply.com. These are all hens. Mature laying hens are harder to find, though an individual looking to make a flock younger may be interested in parting with a few. “Battery hens” are not good candidates for a flocks at home. These chickens, commonly recognized in industrial farming settings, are debeaked, confined to cages and made to lay eggs intensively for a period of two to three years.

Typically, the high production means that they are unable to produce after the first three years.

Choose broody hens if possible. Broodiness is the instinct to sit on eggs until hatch. To have replacement chicks with an incubator, keep the egg under a heater lamp or, alternatively, a hen. Eggs typically take 21 days to hatch.

Newly-hatched chicks must be hydrated.

Chick care can vary by bird breed, developing from varieties that lay multi-colored eggs to large hens. Use chick-starter feed, while ideally keeping them penned and under a heat lamp keeping the temperature at 92 degrees. It should be this temperature to avoid picking and cannibalism.

Use red bulbs. Bloody spots attract pecking, which chicks will do until death. Ensure water trays are shallow and filled. According to studies from Pennsylvania State University, chicken cannibalism is induced by overheating, overlighting and overcrowding.

“Under most circumstances, there is little advantage in having more than 18 to 20 layers; a flock this size should supply a family of five or six with at least one egg per person per day,” according to a study released by New Mexico State University. Similar studies and information are provided by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office.

Hens stop laying for a period in the winter. Laying periods can be extended by using a light hooked to a timer to simulate the sun. Hens live between 3 and 7 years, producing most in the first three, though can continue depending on how they’re taken of.

With not much assembly and continuous care, chickens can eliminate the cost of eggs year-round.

LIMESTONE COUNTY LEGENDS FOUND AT HISTORICAL MUSEUM DOWNTOWN From Groesbeck Journal reports

The Limestone County Historical Museum, located in downtown Groesbeck, has served as a staple exhibiting local history since its formal organization in 1974.

Formed at the Limestone County Courthouse, items for the museum were actually collected for a number of years prior to the formation. A museum committee was appointed at the Limestone County Courthouse by the Historical Survey Committee that had previously gathered artifacts. The museum started in the Kennedy building on Commerce Street in Groesbeck.

The doors officially opened in 1974 at Commerce Street. In a couple years’ time, the museum moved to another rental on Navasota Street. Several groups helped the museum, with the Groesbeck Chamber of Commerce paying utilizes and the county providing rent. Judge Norton Fox paid rent and provided many contributions including items.

Today, the museum provides a rich history of Limestone County, from the oil boom in Mexia and small amount produced in Kosse, to Groesbeck’s history as a rural hub, from oil and gas exploration to

farmers then ranchers. “It hopped over us,” said Larry Smith of the museum, speaking of the oil boom.

“It was very short-lived in Kosse,” added Tom Hawkins of the Museum Board. “I guess the oil boom really got Limestone County generated and going, but not every town.”

According to Hawkins, after WWII, cotton was king.

“As cotton declined and the economic effect with it went, the area shifted from farming to more ranching,” he said. He noted that Point Enterprise received more farmers due to superior irrigation possibilities.

The Groesbeck Convention Center’s location previously housed weigh-in scales. “In the ‘50s, Jess Lewis used to raise about 300 acres of watermelon,” Smith said, noting sandier soil east of town though the watermelons were brought to town to weigh.

From older structures like the old ice plant across from the Groesbeck Chamber and the brick plant, to new buildings completed like the courthouse that was restructured several times over.

The Historical Survey Committee collected a wealth of items initially, with more contributed each year according to President William Reagan. Since purchasing the building in 1982, the museum has improved the roof, completed back-wall repair and new restroom facilities, and finished a full renovation.

Mike Williams was the first director as a volunteer. The building housed a hardware store, general store, drug store and more before housing the items of Limestone history. “It served several different purposes,” stated Hawkins. “The building at one time was much larger but the back end fell in. It’s one of the oldest buildings in Groesbeck.”

The Limestone County Museum’s roof collapsed June 4, 2000, damaging the back wall in the process.

At the time, Officer Chris Henson reported the collapse, which occurred late that night or early that morning. Officials believe that a large amount of rain accumulated on the roof, causing the collapse under the strain of the weight.

The museum moved into the building next door to the collapse while cleanup was completed in early July. Today, the museum is still located in that space and clearly needs more, evidenced by the collection that stretches to the building’s beadboard ceiling. A piece of living history itself, the building is the one the block row standing since the rainstorm near the turn of the century.

Hawkins remembers running around the press room at the Groesbeck Journal since age three. He was born in 1940, and his parents purchased the newspaper shortly after. The Journal was founded in 1892, with

www.groesbeckchamber.com­ 9 the township of Groesbeck’s founding in 1875. Reagan has tried to find the exact date of construction for the building, though he hasn’t been able to confirm it. However, he did locate a farmer’s map of the area in 1885. The building at Navasota exists on the map, with which from Reagan estimates the building’s construction about 10 years or earlier after the town’s founding.

Events that occurred in Groesbeck like the courthouse catching fire and other calamities sometimes limit the research process, as the existing copies known of were destroyed or never returned.

Larry Smith doesn’t know of a gunfight in Groesbeck, but instead told the tale of the shooting of a sheriff. The resulting investigation led to the discovery of a troubled ex-veteran that was eventually compelled to shoot the sheriff, and an ensuing standoff. A U.S. Marshall heard the call and arrived to back up the ranger.

“Our sheriff got shot by a man out in the country, a squirrel hunter,” said Smith, speaking of Sheriff Harry Dunlap. “We called a Texas Ranger. His name was Clint Peoples.”

Reagan is a distant cousin of the shooter. “It was a rifle of some kind,” he said, speaking of the murder weapon.

“The sheriff knew him and he was going to go to the house to try and talk to him.”

When the sheriff arrived with a warrant to commit he was shot, Peoples responded in an armored vehicle, resulting in a standoff. The shooter did not survive. Read more on that shooting elsewhere in this issue of the Legends.

Today, the current collection is housed wall to wall, often by divided sections grouped by type and artifact design.

Though far outdated now, quality typewriters line the back shelf of the Limestone County Historical Museum. More antique items line the walls of the museum, open Saturdays 10 a.m. through 2 p.m.

Though antiques and other memorabilia line the walls, the best part of the story is the stories,.

Even so, as the collection grows, Reagan says that the Board of Trustees is looking to expand yet again, this time with the purchase of new property in which a museum will be constructed.

“There are things that we can’t put out because we don’t have the space,” said Reagan. Though details are still being worked out, a rough blueprint plans for a wraparound exhibit hall, bathrooms, extensive archival storage, a research and meeting room, gift shop, office and rotating-exhibit gallery. Moisture always presents a problem to the historical collection in preservation.

Bluebonnets are coming to a roadside near you, with many already taking their “Bluebonnet pictures” locally this year. Though several different species were once not considered the state flower, all bluebonnet types serve as a symbol of Texas now. These beauts were taken around the Navasota River recently.

From Groesbeck Journal reports Many know the bluebonnet as the state flower of Texas. Their spread across the state was anything but unintentional. The 27th Texas Legislature adopted the flower, aka annual legume Lupinus subcarnosus, as one of its state signifiers.

The name comes from the flower’s resemblance to a sunbonnet. Other names past include el conejo (the rabbit in Spanish).

The bluebonnet was a contender along with the cotton boll and cactus flower.

The legislation was amended to include L. texensis, L. havardii, L. concinnus, L. perennis and L. plattensis. Early explorers did not make mention of the flower in the first descriptions of the state. Native Americans’ history calls the flower a gift from the Great Spirit.

The legislature adopted “Bluebonnets,” written by Julia D. Booth and Lora C. Crockett, as the state flower song in 1933.

Around this time, the Highway Department began a landscaping and beautification program and extended the flower’s range.

Due largely to that agency’s efforts, bluebonnets now grow along most major highways throughout the state. The flower usually blooms in late March and early April and is found mostly in limestone outcroppings from north-central Texas to Mexico. The flower’s popularity is widespread.

Legislation from Lyndon B. and Lady Bird Johnson’s highway beautification program led to the spread of the flower across state highways, encouraging the growth of native plants. A bill passed in 1965 was part of the senate’s efforts to beautify the county again.

In 1971, Texas legislators buckled and amended a previous decision to add “any other variety of bluebonnet not heretofore recorded,” reads the updated legislation.

cial to successfully grow the flowers. A sunny, well-drained spot with slightly alkaline soil is appropriate for Lupinus texensis.

Plant L. subcarnosus in early spring southern and western-facing slopes and Those interested in growing the flower as a cover plant should plant in early October and November. Scratching or nicking the seeds, also known as scarification, helps simulate natural weathering processes, enabling seeds to start faster.

To do this, rub seeds with sandpaper or nick them with a knife.

Freeze the seeds overnight, then quickly pour boiling water over the seeds. Leave them to soak for several hours at room temperature.

If the planting site is free of weeds, bluebonnets can be interspersed in existing vegetation. For bare ground, plant seeds on a lightly tilled or slightly roughened soil surface.

The DPS recommends seed 10 to 12 pounds per acre, with an ounce covering roughly 200 square feet. Regardless of classification or historical reference, the bluebonnet still remains Texas’s number one roadside attraction in spring.

Today, the Highway Department is TxDOT, and continues to plant pounds of black-eyed Susans, Indian paintbrushes, daisies and other small flowers along the highway. For more information that includes the Grass, Weed and Wildflower Guide, visit tpwd. texas.gov.

Lupinus Subcarnosus is also known as the Sandy-land bluebonnet. It flourishes in deep, sandy loam from Leon to LaSalle Counties, touching the tip of the Hidalgo County in the state’s southern valley. Clay soil is not this species’ friend, typically growing in mid to late March.

Lupinus Havardii is called the “Big Bend” or “Chisos” bluebonnet, is the largest of the Texas bluebonnets. Flower spikes reach three feet, found on the flats of Big Bend country in the early spring. Each plant has seven leaflets, though is considered

www.groesbeckchamber.com difficult by gardeners to cultivate outside the natural habitat. It is found on the flats of the Big Bend country in early spring; it usually has seven leaflets and is difficult to cultivate outside its natural habitat.

The Annual or Bajada lupine, or Lupinus concinnus, is a smaller variety, reaching only two to seven inches tall including flower height. The flowers have hues of white, rosy purple and lavender.

This variety can be found in the Trans-Peco region, blooming in early spring.

Lupinus perennis, named the “Old Maids Bonnet,” is considered a medicinal plant. This bluebonnet is widespread in the eastern part of the USA in Texas, Florida, Maine, and Canada. The bloom is long, sparsely flowered, sometimes almost verticillate. Flowers range from blue to pink. Commonly, however, most are blue or bluish purple.

Lupinus texensis, the favorites of Texas painters and artists, provides the roadside attraction that many see driving each day. The flowering portion consists of up to 50 flowers, tipped with white flower buds. Some think this looks like a rabbit’s tail, hence the Spanish namesake El Conejo. Peak bloom occurs in late March and early April.

The bluebonnet known as Lupinus plattensis grows in the north Texas panhandle’s sandy dunes. This variety is the only perennial variety. It blooms in mid to late spring. Other names for this variety are the Dune bluebonnet, Plains bluebonnet, and Nebraska Lupine.

Prep spring gardens for late harvest in fall From Groesbeck Journal reports

In preparation for spring, every gardener should have a checklist to complete during the winter and accomplish by early spring. For summer or fall crops, however, it’s not too late to get started. By now, seeds should be in the ground or at least begun indoors. From stocking up on seeds to organizing the shed, preparation is crucial in ensuring a successful harvest for the year.

Preparing a garden for spring begins early, with most annuals dying off during the coldest part of the year. From organizing the tool shed to adjusting soil for optimal growth, gardeners can get a jump on next year’s yields by starting early in less-than-ideal weather.

Dead plants pose a problem in harboring disease, pests, fungi and possibly eggs from insects. Most plants, once dead, required further decomposition before direct return to the soil. The real exception to this is cover crops, which are grown for soil as opposed to the dinner plate. Gardeners should pull dead stalks out as soon as possible, particularly with tomatoes and other vegetable varieties. Root rot can be spread through soil, so be sure to rotate areas and dirt if possible.

Plant cover crops when there is enough time for them to grow. Late summer or early fall is a great time to sow cover crops like rye, vetch or clover. The general guideline is to plant crops one month before the first frost, although some are hardier than others.

These crops prevent soil erosion, break up compacted areas and increase organic matter in garden beds.

Cover crops also return nutrients to the soil. Fields peas or clover can increase available nitrogen for vegetable gardens, in slow-release fashion perfectly suitable for plants.

The crops can also act as mulches if properly managed, improving soil physical properties in just one growing season, attracting pollinators and other beneficial insects that crackdown on other pests. Cover crops also convert solar energy back into the soil in the process. Bare soil typically spells erosion and loss of crucial topsoil nutrients. Cover crops can be planted anywhere you have time or space.

If gardeners are planning to cover crop over a long period of time, combine a small grain and a legume for an optimal balance of nitrogen-fixing and nutrient

For the short term, consider a green manure crop, or something beneficial that is quick growing and can be recycled.

The true method to proper cover cropping is paying attention and allowing the crop to mature, killing the crop before it seeds. The most popular method to kill cover crops is mowing and weed eating, though growers should ensure the crop can die by this method.

Tilling is another way to recycle the crop.

Moving any deciduous perennials should be a high priority, if applicable. Be careful to give a wide berth based on root type, which varies structurally from plant-to-plant. Installing rainwater collecting systems for self-sustainability is another option that saves time and overall cost.

Consider aerating soil for fresh oxygen exposure as components and organic matter like compost are mixed in. The benefits of rotating soil are numerous, though no-till applications are possible with the buildup of the soil.

Creating a composting area is crucial to the process of keeping soil viable season after season. A readymade bin or self-made enclosure function well if properly maintained. Adding organic matter or unwanted vegetables works well, in addition to cycling grass clippings, leaves, straw and monitored amounts of manure by type so as to not directly upset the nitrogen balance.

Cleaning and organizing the shed or greenhouse is a big step to continuing the next year’s bounty.

When everything else is ready, order new seeds, bulbs and prepare to propagate them, with a greenhouse being the ideal setting. Cut bulbs and get seeds in optimal conditions, and plant outside after the risk of frost is far gone.

Typically anything planted in the summer will be harvested in late fall or early winter. Plants like collards, chard, broccoli, It’s not too late to get tomatoes or root vegetables in the ground. Additionally, herbs like rosemary, basil, oregano, and others can be grown year-round indoors, for easy access when cooking meals. While driving around, be on the lookout for blooming plants, in order to acquire new seeds.

According to the TBA, every third bite of food consumed by the average Texan is a result of honey bee pollination, a keep part in the production of many fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Over 90 commercial crops produced in Texas require or benefit from bee pollination. The estimated annual value of honey bee pollination is $587 million, over 80 times the value of honey produced by these colonies.
