Life without sports, pretty darn boring What’s next? The simple answer is I don’t know and no one else does. This health emergency caused by the COVID-19 outbreak has caused everything to change. Last week I had planned on covering El Campo vs. Needville, both massive games for baseball and softball. With wins for both softball and baseball, El Campo would have had the leg up in the race for the district championship. Wharton boys soccer are district champions and still have one game left to play. Under normal circumstances, their district season would be over and they’d be getting ready for the playoffs. Those games along with everything else has been pushed back until May, at minimum. Like the athletes around the county, coaches and fans, I too am waiting for the latest UIL update. I think it’s safe to say we all want to know what’s next. This has gone beyond a shortterm problem, but are we nearing the end or is the finish line so far out in front that we still can’t even see it yet? By order of the governor, schools will be closed until April 4, and

No New Sports Found For two weeks now, there haven’t been any live sports events. For any sports fans, it’s been a tough time out there. Here’s to wishing everything returns to normal soon and I can provide y’all with high-quality photos and sports coverage again. If you are sad, you aren’t alone.
the UIL has gone a step farther to not allow games until a month after that. However, they did say practices could occur when school gets going again, but no guidance has been given for that, as of press time. Outside of playing some junior college basketball - you’ll have to ask me about it one day, I was never an athlete, but El Campo native and former Ricebird John Paul Appling was. The former Ricebird feels for the local athletes who put in the work and now wait for what’s next. Joshua “I’d be thinkReese ing, when are spoRts Column we going to get back on the field to practice and play games,” Appling said. “It would be very frustrating (to not know).” Appling, who’s been a supporter of the Ricebirds since the 1930s, is left, like the rest of us, to ponder what do we do now. During any normal year, you could find Appling, along with many other fans out in the bleachers cheering on the Ricebirds and Ladybirds at baseball and softball games. Now

he watches re-runs of M.A.S.H. because there isn’t even pro sports on TV. “This is very strange because there are no sports on whatsoever and you don’t know when they are coming back,” Appling said. “I’ve never seen anything like this.” These indeed are strange times. Not only is there nothing locally to support and go out and watch when you are home you can’t even turn on the TV to watch, the Rockets, or check out an Astros spring training game. I mean this is desperate times, I’ll settle for some tennis, or golf, really anything at the moment, but there is nothing by re-runs of classic games on TV. With no sports, you and I sit and wait for a time when we can return to a little bit of normalcy. Sports for me isn’t just a job, it’s something I’m truly passionate about. EC grads may get diplomas this July By EMILY LINCKE reporter@leader-news.com
Walking across the Ricebird Stadium stage to receive a diploma had become a fleeting dream for El Campo High School seniors now finishing the semester at home. Although likely delayed until July due to the coronavirus outbreak, the 2020 graduation ceremony will still take place, officials said Thursday. “Our goal is to do everything we can to hold a traditional graduation ceremony for this class,” Superintendent Kelly Waters said. El Campo ISD is closed until further notice due to the coronavirus pandemic. If the district is unable to host a graduation ceremony on the original May 22 date, it will be postponed until July 23. “That way if parents had vacations or were going out of town, we figured they’d still be in for that Thursday evening,” Waters said. “We’re trying to make it work for everyone.”

Virus tests today, count steady By SHANNON CRABTREE publisher@leader-news.com
State health officials are in El Campo today performing COVID-19 testing at the El Campo Civic Center while county infection levels have remained almost unchanged for the last week. Those wanting to be tested must register and receive an appointment. No drive-in or walk-up tests will be conducted. Only samples will be collected in El Campo. The tests will be processed at UTMB-Galveston with results available in 48 to 72 hours and deliverable by text message. State officials will be at the Civic Center, 2350
N. Mechanic, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, April 25. “One of the big things we need is more testing,” Wharton County Emergency Management Coordinator Andy Kirkland said. “We need to increase the percentage. It’s not that I think there’s an outbreak, I just want more tests. We’re going to try to open up more, but not before we know what’s going on.” Friday, the county’s tally on COVID-19 positive tests reached 36, an increase of just one since last Sunday. Of the total diagnosed with the virus, 15 are listed as recovered from the illness. A previous report listing 36 infected was in error.
Retail businesses statewide began curbside sales Friday with strict requirements calling for employees to be masked and well trained in disinfecting. All await Monday when Governor Greg Abbott is scheduled to address dine-in restaurant service, hairstylists, gyms and more. In the last several days, major metros like Houston and San Antonio announced that everyone in public would be required to wear a mask for the next 30 days – even if that mask was simply a bandanna. Fines of up to $1,000 are possible. (See NO MASK, Page 8)

El Campo ISD officials will clarify the district’s next steps for graduation, at-home curriculum during the coronavirus outbreak and district contracts at Tuesday’s meeting, which will be held remotely. The district closed on March 16 due to the coronavirus pandemic and since then students have completed curriculum using online lectures and remote instruction. The board will have updates on COVID-19 instruction and on El Campo High School’s graduation ceremony (see related story for more information). Superintendent Kelly Waters will seek board approval to hire (See SCHOOL, Page 8)

St. Philip teachers and El Campo librarians dressed as book characters lined the streets of Depot and Church as students, family and friends drove by and waved, in honor of World Book Day on Thursday. Volunteers helping families grocery bag by bag by bag By EMILY LINCKE reporter@leader-news.com
The coronavirus pandemic has created or added to financial hardship for many people across the world. For some local families, this means struggling to even put food on the table. Wanting to help others during the pandemic, a group of El Campoans anonymously donated and delivered groceries this week to local families in need. “Different people said, ‘we want to help,’” El Campoan Hector Gutierrez said. They asked, “‘who needs the help?’” Gutierrez is the president of the
Full Plates, Full Hearts
El Campo Community Events volunteer group and organizes the community wide Thanksgiving dinner each year. Acting as a middle man of sorts, Gutierrez reached out to needy families, requested a grocery list, and relayed it to local donors, who wished to remain anonymous. “These people don’t expect anything in return,” Gutierrez said. “Out of their heart they’re doing it.” The first grocery delivery was to locals Connie Rodriguez and her son Cody. Rodriguez and her son typically rely on food stamps to buy groceries, but had little funds left to last (See SMALL, Page 8) Contributed Photo
