Welcome!

If you ask me what I love most about Henry County I would say the people and the sense of community. I have been a part of Henry County for 15 years and each year I love it more.

The community, businesses, agriculture, heritage, tourism and beautiful backroads make Henry County unique. Henry County is centrally located between Lexington and Louisville and easily accessible from I-71 and I-64.

Henry County has a number of great businessExecutive Director, Henry es throughout the different County Chamber of Commerce cities and community. The county seat, New Castle, is the home of our beautiful historic court house, which is currently being restored. You can enjoy something to eat at one of the restaurants in New Castle, Buddy’s Place and 18 Main Bar & Grill; there is a women’s fitness center; you can enjoy The Locker Rental Hall for unique space for small events; The Berry Center and The Bookstore at the Berry Center, where you can find books by Wendell Berry and other local authors; and so much more.

Not far outside of downtown New Castle you will find the beautiful Smith-Berry Winery. Smith-Berry Winery is family owned winery that has competed in the San Francisco Wine Competition and won Best of Class fruit wines with their blackberry wine.

The City of Campbellsburg includes a beautiful community center that hosts multiple community events, Bluegrass Drugstore, Campbellsburg Chiropractic, United Citizens Bank, Trackside Butcher Shoppe and the Campbellsburg Grocery Store that cater to the community and make it a great, friendly place to live and have a business.

In between Campbellsburg and New Castle we have some great recreation resources including the Henry County Country Club, which is home to one of the most beautiful golf courses in the state. Memberships are reasonable and they offer great food and drinks. Not far from the country club, the Henry County Recreational and Services Park offers safe walking trails, a handicapped accessible playground, a fun splash pad, the senior center and Cedar Lake Lodge. New Castle is also the home of the Henry County Fairgrounds where multiple events are hosted including the Henry County Fair and Harry Hill Park has baseball fields used for youth leagues and a disc golf course open for the public.

Beautiful Pleasureville has undergone some changes to their main street and have worked hard to bring this small town to life. The Main Street Bakery and Café featuring farm to table dishes and wonderful other dishes is definitely a place to visit. Just a little outside of town you can visit Sweet Home Spun that is located in a restored Low Dutch Meeting House and enjoy some yarn spinning, knitting and other arts and crafts. You can enjoy a once a month dinner at the Grigsby Stiltz Tea Room. Not far from Pleasureville on Highway 421 in Defoe you can find the Farmstead Amish Market.

find Our Best Restaurant, owned by the Way family who purchased it from the Smithfield Mill that produces Our Best Flour and cornmeal, serving homecooked food and unbelievable pies. You can also get your seafood fix at Keeper’s Seafood & More located on Lake Jericho Road in Smithfield, serving lunch and dinner.

If you are looking to do some camping, fishing or are just a water lover, Lake Jericho is definitely a place to visit. Lake Jericho is a 137-acre lake and recreational camping area.

Eminence, the largest of the five incorporated cities in Henry County, now has quite a bit to offer with CVS, Med Save Eminence, Johnson & Company Flooring Sales & Installation and Browning Chevrolet Car Dealership.

You can also choose from multiple restaurants including El Nopal, McDonald’s, Dairy Queen, and several other small restaurants. In downtown Eminence, you can do some shopping at Somewhere in Tyme, a nice antique shop on Main Street. Stop in and visit Finder Keepers Flea Market located just outside of town, there are multiple local vendor booths and other primitive décor. The City of Eminence has a new Splash Pad located in town as their “Coach D” Park. Eminence also offers some unique tourism right on Highway 22. The Kentucky Renaissance Fair grounds is a permanent structured site that hosts multiple events throughout the year, with the largest being a six-weekend Renaissance Festival where visitors can step back in time to the 13th Century and enjoy entertainment including live jousting, great food, artists and merchants, and a day filled with family fun and entrainment. It also hosts The Annual Celtic Festival and Highland Games in September and the Dickens Christmas Festival the first two weekends of December with food, vendors and actors performing scenes from “A Christmas Carol.”

The county has two wonderful school systems, Eminence Independent School (K-12) and Henry County Public Schools. Both are great, innovative school systems that offer a multitude of options for college and career readiness and individual attention not found in many larger systems.

Our community theatre, “The Theatre Downstream,” has offered some wonderful plays including recently “12 Angry Jurors.” They generally have sell out shows! This will be their sixth season. You can find Upcoming Shows and mor information at www.theatresdownstream.com On the fourth Saturday of July is one of the Henry County’s biggest events and one of my personal favorites, the Henry County Harvest Showcase. The Harvest Showcase brings the families of Henry and surrounding counties together to celebrate the agricultural heritage of the region. The backroads of Henry County are so beautiful; to just drive around the area is worth the time to see what this unique county has to offer. We are worth the trip to visit or relocate! What do you do for residents?

The judge-executive’s office serves the people in a different capacity than that of other county offices in that the residents don’t need to come in on a regular basis for licenses, payment of taxes, etc.

This office serves the people by overseeing the administrative affairs of the county and by working through the state offices and area districts for collecting and disbursing revenues.

Many services and functions of the local community are administered through this office. So, if someone needs to book the ballpark, fairgrounds or 4-H building for an occasion; has concerns over county roads or missing signs on county roads; needs letters of support for grants; wants to ask a local alcohol beverage control licensing question; submit county job applications; wishes to have a resolution passed or proclamation signed; or needs any concerns brought before fiscal court or general information concerning the county, this would be the contact office. County Government Other Elected County Officials Circuit Court Clerk Gina Lyle The Circuit Court Clerk serves as clerk for circuit and district courts. She maintains records for traffic, juvenile, probate, civil and criminal cases. The office also serves residents by issuing drivers licenses and managing jury duty. The office is located in the Henry County Temporary Courthouse in Eminence.

Office hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The phone number is (502) 845-2868.

Henry County Attorney Virginia Harrod The County Attorney is responsible for prosecuting criminal court cases on the state and county’s behalf, as well as preparing ordinances and providing legal counsel to the Fiscal Court. Harrod also is responsible for the collection of child support for Henry County. Her office is located at 106 S. Main St., New Castle. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Monday through Friday. She can be reached by mail at P.O. Box 128, New Castle, 40050, or by phone at (502) 845-4481.

Henry County Clerk Shanda Archer The county clerk’s office handles motor vehicle licenses and transfers, marriage licenses, and deed, mortgage and lien records. The office also processes election results and collects delinquent taxes. The clerk’s office is located in the Castle House Annex at 27 South Property Road in New Castle. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the last Monday of the month 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Call (502) 845-5705.

Henry County PVA Jason Scriber The Property Valuation Administration assesses all property in Henry County in order to establish a tax base. The office provides information on property ownership, property sales and maintains a GIS mapping system of Henry County. The PVA office is located in the Castle House Annex at 23 South Property Road in New Castle. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Brief Historical Background: Known for a time when it incorporated in 1840 as Chiltonsville in honor of trustee Charles J. Chilton, just three weeks later the community changed its name to Campbellsburg. The arrival of the Louisville, Cincinnati and Lexington Railroad caused a division of the town in 1869, but old and new Campbellsburg eventually merged.

On April 1, 1974, the business district and many homes were destroyed by a tornado. The storm devastated the city and caused several hundred thousand dollars in damages, but the community came together to rebuild.

Basic Info:

A little city with a big heart, Campbellsburg sits one mile off exit 34 of I-71. In the center of the city, the community center offers a picnic pavilion and state-of-the-art train-themed playground in a safe and fun environment, a popular gathering place that’s available to rent. Campbellsburg serves as home of Kentucky State Police Post 5 and several different types of businesses.

The city offers community recycling, residential trash collection, police and fire protection, street maintenance and snow removal. Historical Background:

Incorporated in 1851, Eminence grew rapidly as a result of the railroad passing through the town and intersecting the highway from Shelbyville to New Castle.

Now the largest city in Henry County, Eminence is the county’s industrial and business center.

Population: 2,498. Residential with strong industrial base.

Water, sewer, parks and recreation, streets and street maintenance, street lighting and full-time police protection.

What do you do for residents?

Our staff assists citizens with any number of questions and concerns, from giving directions to getting trash picked up properly. We get calls on street lights, street signs, snow removal, water and sewer problems or concerns, taxes (property and occupational), phone numbers for other agencies, police, fire, pot holes, stray dogs and cats, street bumps, etc. We try to answer anything asked of us.

Claims to fame: Named Eminence because we were the highest point on the L&N Railroad between Louisville and Lexington.

New Castle city government provides water, sewer and trash pick-up for its citizens. Through the city commission, concerns about these services are also handled. New Castle provides fire and police protection for its citizens as well.

Meeting Time and Place: First Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at city hall

Brief Historical Background: New Castle was settled in the 1790s due to its proximity to the sulfur springs found near Drennon Creek. This early settlement was also the mid-point between Shelbyville, which was on the Falls of the Ohio Trail, and Port William (now Carrollton) at the confluence of the Kentucky and Ohio Rivers. Since it was about 15 to 20 miles from either point — about a day’s ride during that era — it was an excellent stopping place for pioneer travelers. We are proud of our history and strive to maintain our well-kept mid-19th century buildings. New Castle is a certified Main Street Community and received the coveted Preserve America Award in 2005.

Basic Info: New Castle has a population of about 1,000. The city is primarily a residential town with several small businesses.

Because we are the county seat, we have several law offices as well.

What do you do for residents?

The city helps citizens with water, sewer and trash complaints, as well as enforcement of ordinances. They also handle snow removal and festivals.

City personnel: Lynn Adams serves as City Clerk/Treasurer; Tommie Tingle is the economic development director; Joey Bramblett is the city’s public works director; Michael Ellis is the code enforcement officer; and Wesley Benham is the fire chief. The city attorney is Josh Clubb.

Claims to Fame: New Castle was the scene of a few Civil War skirmishes between the Home Guard and confederate sympathizers. One of the state’s great jurists, the Hon. William S. Pryor, served on the Kentucky Court of Appeals for decades and was Chief Justice of that court for many years. The city was one of the first small towns to build a sewer system, thanks to the efforts of Col. Carroll Gullion, a prominent citizen who lived here in the 1930s. It was the venue for the murder trial of the former Lt. Gov. of Kentucky Henry Denhardt in 1937.

Emergency Services Henry County’s Emergency Management Agency (EMA) is required by law in Kentucky. The judge-executive appoints the Emergency Management Agency personnel, and the Fiscal Court sets their salaries. A director and two deputy directors are on call full-time with pay on a part-time basis. An EMA’s job is to protect the people and property of Henry County through three steps.

1. Preparation — they must have knowledge of the resources that are available, such as schools and churches for shelters, buses for evacuation and where bulldozers and cranes can be obtained if needed. There is an emergency plan that is reviewed and updated annually; exercises are held to test the plan. There are two types of disasters: natural (tornadoes, floods, storms, fires and earthquakes); and manmade (explosions/chemical releases, aircraft crash, riots, active aggressors and terrorism). Kentucky Emergency Management provides one-half of the cost (matched by county funds), of the local EMA program.

EMA also attempts to secure grants to help fire/rescue departments to purchase equipment to assist them with their jobs. The emergency managers must attend specialized training and are responsible for coordinating classes that prepare first responders and other groups to meet the needs of Henry County during emergency incidents.

There is a local emergency planning committee (LEPC), which serves as a “watch dog” over locations that have hazardous chemicals that may prove dangerous to first responders or citizens in the event of a release or a fire.

This group also serves as the advisory council to improve and guide emergency management in Henry County. The committee consists of local officials, an attorney, school board representatives, public utilities, social services, first responders and citizens. The EMA also uses various media such as the Henry County Local, church bulletins and social medial to educate and prepare the public for various types of disasters and other emergency incidents that face our community.

ments, EMS and local police. They need the support of the judge-executive and Fiscal Court, as well as other volunteers. There are plans to develop Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) that will be comprised of citizens who choose to attend training to aid first responders who may be overwhelmed during a disaster with fire safety, basic first aid and light search and rescue to name a few. If local resources are exhausted they are the liaison to the state Emergency Management Agency who can provide additional resources such as the National Guard and other regional response teams. There is an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at the EMS Building on Property Road where key personnel can meet in the event of a disaster to help coordinate response and recovery efforts. The people who staff the EOC are chosen because of their experience in law enforcement, health department, communications, fire and rescue, public works and rescue and supply. The EOC is the “nerve center” for emergency personnel during an emergency or crisis.

3. Recovery — the EMA coordinates recovery after incidents. There is a damage-assessment team composed of volunteers from the PVA office, the county road supervisor engineer, real estate agents and the county extension office that help evaluate the damage and develop a plan to begin the recovery and rebuilding. When a disaster is “declared” by the county, the state and eventually the president of the United States, funding is available from FEMA. EMA works with local, state and federal officials to recover a portion of the allowable funds that were used to mitigate the problems related to the disaster. In some cases this helps individuals, businesses and local governments recover funds they were not prepared to expend or that may not be covered by insurance.

Recreation Campbellsburg facilities

Campbellsburg Station, which includes the Campbellsburg Community Center, a state of the art train-themed playground and a picnic pavillion is now open.

The Community Center may be used for any type of rental and will host many community events throughout the year.

There is also a baseball diamond located behind the elementary school and a basketball court across from the Baptist Church.

Harry Hill Park

Located about one mile south of New Castle on U.S. 421, Harry Hill Park is a wonderful setting for a family outing. The park includes a softball field, two baseball diamonds, basketball court, horseshoe pitching area, volleyball court, soccer field, playground and nine-hole disc golf course. It also offers an open-wall building complete with picnic tables and barbeque pits. For more information about Harry Hill Park, call the Henry County Judge-Executive’s office at (502) 845-5707.

Henry County Country Club

The Country Club is located a few miles northwest of New Castle on Highway 55. This is a semi-private club open to the public that features an 18-hole golf course and swimming pool. The renovated clubhouse restaurant is open daily with an expanded menu and carryout available. Henry County Fairgrounds

The Fairgrounds are only a short drive down U.S. 421 from Harry Hill Park. The Fairgrounds hosts the Henry County Fair, held July 30 through Aug. 3; the Henry County Harvest Showcase, held the last Saturday in July; and other special events and classes.

Henry County Recreation and Services Park

Located north of New Castle on U.S. 421, the Henry County Recreation and Services park has youth soccer and football fields, a walking trail, a handicapped-accessible playground and Don and Elizabeth Buchanan Splash Pad. Lake Jericho

If you have a hankering for crappie, bluegill, bass

and catfish or just camping, Lake Jericho is located just east of Pendleton. The 137-acre lake provides space for fishing and boating and also has a campground including eight winter sites for camping.

There also are horse trails, hiking trails and rental boats. Lake Jericho is open during daylight hours.

New Castle Baseball Field

The City of New Castle maintains the New Castle Little League baseball field, and Bill Smith of the Henry County Little League handles scheduling for the field. The field is located behind the Henry County Board of Education on Highway 55 in New Castle. The field hosts Little League and T-ball games throughout the summer. Smithfield facilities

If you plan to spend time around Smithfield, the city offers a basketball court, picnic area and playground in the center of town. The Robert Morgan Playground has several pieces of playground equipment for the younger folks and a picnic table for relaxing. Steel Technologies Shooting Range

In addition to being one of the largest industries in Henry County, Steel Technologies sports one shooting range. The range is located on Highway 22 and features skeet shooting, sporting clay courses, trap and 5-stand. It also hosts numerous events throughout the year in which shooters may participate. The range opens April 1 and stays open as long as weather permits. Youth Leagues

Henry County supports several youth leagues in T-ball, football, soccer, basketball and baseball.

For T-ball and youth league baseball, New Castle, Campbellsburg, Pleasureville and Eminence each have their own leagues. The T-ball and baseball teams play at fields in Campbellsburg, New Castle, Pleasureville and Eminence. Campbellsburg, New Castle, Eminence and Eastern Elementary support youth league football games. Games are played at the Henry County Recreation and Services Park.

Henry County Fair

An annual tradition in small towns across America, the county fair, held in Henry County this year just before the launch of the Kentucky State Fair, the fair provides six full nights of family fun and entertainment. Harvest Showcase

As an agriculturally based community, Henry County relies heavily on farming for its financial well-being. Agriculture HENRY COUNTY EXTENSION SERVICE

Continuing to Meet the County’s Needs In 1862, President Lincoln signed the Morrill Act which established the Land Grant College System.

The purpose of this act was to aid in founding agricultural and mechanical colleges. Out of this act the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky was established. Later, this college would become what we now call the University of Kentucky.

The College of Agriculture grew out of the Agricultural Experiment Station and the Ag Department at the Ag and Mechanical College. To establish this new system of colleges the federal government made a grant to each state who agreed to set up an agriculture college, 30,000 acres of public land for each member of Congress that the state had.

At the time we had nine representatives and two sensen ators and received 330,000 acres.

The script for the land was sold for $330,000 and an account was set up that was expected to bring in about $20,000 (at 6 percent interest) to run the entire college on an annual basis at that time!

In 1914, the Smith Lever Act established the extension service and our role of disseminating research-based information to the people. By 1920 two-thirds of the nation’s counties had extension agents, but Henry County was not among them. The fiscal court did not believe that there was enough interest among the county’s farmers to justify the appropriation.

In 1924, the Eminence Chamber of Commerce, headed by President J.C. Helburn, the owner of a local department store, established an Ag Committee in the chamber. He encouraged them to develop an unusual proposal in which each of the seven banks in the county put up $75 and the chamber put up $125 to make a $600 appropriation required to hire an extension agent. The fiscal court at this point somewhat reluctantly agreed to hire an agent.

Carl Malone was hired in 1924, our first extension agent for agriculture. He had a chair, a desk and a wooden orange crate for his filing cabinet! The Henry County Local stepped in to provide free office space to the extension service for the next 10 years.

Carl’s first year was so successful that the fiscal court agreed to take over the full expense of the program and actually gave him a $200 raise.

Extension made use of many of the same techtech

niques we use today, demonstration plots, field days, radio and newspaper. Carl also used the theaters in the county. At that time there were theaters in Eminence, Lockport, Sulphur and Port Royal at which he showed agriculturally related films.

The first home demonstration agent was Bina Baird Foree. Once again the county needed a $600 appropriation to fill the position. At the time, the county also needed a stoker for the courthouse furnace. Jimmy Thomas, the county attorney, convinced the fiscal court that we needed the extension home economics program more than a stoker. From that time on some referred to Bina fondly as “Stoker.”

The first project that Bina worked on was the national mattress project. There were 700 mattresses made in Henry County. She also began organizing homemaker clubs. The first club organized was at Franklinton, next came the Jericho Club and then the Eminence group. There were 11 clubs organized.

The first annual meeting was held at the Eminence Theatre in January of 1940. It was 19 degrees below zero and there were 89 in attendance. During the war years, the goal was that each household can 100 quarts of fruits and vegetables per person in the family.

4-H began in the county in 1925. The first project groups worked on beef and clothing. The first 4-H Council was organized in 1940 with John Coleman of Sulphur serving as president. 4-H activities were nearly cancelled in 1941-43 for fear of the spread of polio. The Eminence Rotary Club was a strong sponsor of 4-H projects in the early years.

In 1956, Wayne Sininger, our first 4-H agent, was hired.

Today, the Henry County Cooperative Extension Office is located on Highway 421 outside of New Castle across from the Henry County Country Club.

Agriculture HENRY COUNTY EXTENSION HOMEMAKERS ORGANIZATION The primary objective of the homemakers organization is to carry out an informal educational program. It’s a great way to learn new skills, meet new people and learn up-to-date information.

The Extension Homemakers Organization also provides leadership activities and community development skills. The educational programs are planned by homemaker leaders and are designed to provide information to help make the best use of all available resources, to provide a better and more meaningful life for members, their families and their communities.

The Henry County Homemakers were organized in 1939, under the direction of our first extension agent, Bina Baird Foree. Anyone can become a member and we offer a variety of options. You might want to join one of our existing clubs or help form a new group. Becoming a member-at-large is another option available if your time is limited. This membership allows you to receive all educational materials, bulletins and our monthly newsletter right in your mailbox for just $6 per year.

HENRY COUNTY 4-H Henry County youth have the opportunity to participate in many 4-H activities. The following clubs are available to youth ages 9 to 19: Horse, shooting sports, knitting, dog, sewing, cooking, crochet, photography, rabbit, poultry, art club, 4-H Means Business, natural resources, Pinterest, and the country ham project. There are special events, such as crafts, small engine club, talent show, speeches and demonstrations to name only a few. The highlight of summer for many of our 4-Hers is entering projects in the county and state fair. Others enjoy attending 4-H Camp, Pre-Teen Summit, Shooting Sports Camp or State Teen Conference where they meet new people and learn new skills.

The Henry County 4-H Council is always looking for adults who are interested in volunteering their time and talents to serve the youth of our county.

HENRY COUNTY CATTLEMAN’S ASSOCIATION The Henry County Cattleman’s Association unites all beef and dairy producers in common goals of promotion of the cattle industry, producer education and marketing. The association is incorporated as a formal tax exempt organization and is governed by a nine-member board of directors. Membership meetings are held on the fourth Monday of many months and include an educational program and an annual field day highlighting improved practices on local farms.

The association also administers cost share programs with funds from the Kentucky Ag Development Fund. These include a menu selection of State programs and projects covering nearly all disciplines in Agriculture. Through 2013, over $4 million has been allocated to local farmers through the 50 percent cost share programs for the improvement of the Agriculture Industry in Henry County.

FARMERS MARKET ASSOCIATION The Henry County Farmers’ Market Association is a group of farm families who have united in the common goal of hosting a twice-weekly farmers’ market at the Henry County Courthouse lawn. This farmers’ market serves to provide the consumer a source of wholesome, fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables and bedding plants. It also provides a market for farm families through the growing season.

Agriculture Henry County Conservation District

The Henry County Conservation District was formed in 1947 after the Kentucky General Assembly passed legislation to allow local farmers to petition and establish conservation districts that offer assistance programs to preserve the natural resources in the counties.

During the prior decade a devastating drought struck Henry and neighboring counties, so this seemed to be a solution to the great soil loss experienced when the drought broke and flooding damaged many parts of the county.

Implementing these new assistance practices helps contain the problem by using nature’s own products to slow severe erosion of the land and waterways.

A board of seven supervisors meets each month to review current programs, approve new ones and conduct all other business pertaining to district operations. They receive technical assistance from a state field representative and a district conservationist from Natural Resources Conservation Service. Not only do they offer programs to benefit the farmers in the county, a major one being the dead animal removal program they sponsor with Henry County Fiscal Court and Henry County Farm Bureau, an aggressive conservation education endeavor at the school level is performed each year by way of the Marshall Banta Education Grant and other sponsored contests and events. Local field days and recognition programs are attended and/or conducted annually.

Little Ky. River Watershed Conservancy District

The original purpose of the Little Kentucky River Watershed Conservancy District was to develop and maintain plans and programs that control the usage of water.

A district board of directors was established in the late 1950s to oversee a new project to control flooding and reduce sedimentation in the river watershed. This task was accomplished by building five flood retardant structures and a public recreation area.

A millage tax is assessed to property within the watershed to operate and maintain these structures. The board is responsible for managing these funds to keep all structures in proper repair and maintain the daily operations at Lake Jericho.

Lake Jericho Recreation, located near Pendleton, is visited by thousands of people each year seeking relaxation and enjoyment by fishing, boating, camping and picnicking at the facility. Their annual budget exceeds $100,000.

The Board of Directors administers a WaterWatch Environmental Grant Program to teachers in Henry and Trimble Counties. Science teachers apply for funds to purchase supplies to test water etc. and other field days/ programs for their classes. The funds come from the State Cost Share Program, renewable on an annual basis.

Natural Resources Conservation Service

The USDA Natural resources Conservation Service pro-

vides leadership in a partnership effort to help private landowners and managers conserve their soil, water and other natural resources. NRCS personnel provide technical assistance based on sound science and is customized to meet the client’s specific needs. Landowners are encouraged to participate in a variety of conservation programs offered by NRCS. The Environmental Quality Incentives Program is targeted toward livestock producers who need to install best management practices to correct resource issues on their farms.

NRCS partners with Farm Service Agency to implement the Conservation Reserve Program that focuses on environmentally sensitive areas to offer practices such as riparian buffers and filter strips. These are only a few of the many programs offered to maintain a healthy and productive land use while conserving it for future generations.

Henry County Farm Bureau

Henry County Farm Bureau is one of the oldest and largest county farm organizations. It was founded in 1938 as the local arm of the Kentucky Farm Bureau and the American Farm Bureau, the state and nation’s largest farm organizations. Membership is a family membership, and in 2014, the Henry County Farm Bureau served 2,440 Henry County families.

Henry County Farm Bureau promotes the interest of farmers and rural people through a variety of programs.

Henry County Farm Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce sponsor the Pride of the Counties exhibit at the Kentucky State Fair. Other programs include scholarship programs, leadership programs, and programs for outstanding youth, discount programs, insurance services and many others.

Each year two high school juniors are sponsored to attend the Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders (IFAL) at the University of Kentucky and Murray State University. Farm Service Agency

The USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) administers farm commodity, farm credit and conservation programs for farmers through a network of state and county offices. FSA programs are primarily directed at agricultural producers, or in the case of loans, at those with farming experience.

The local FSA office currently serves the farmers of Henry and Oldham counties in regard to commodity programs and the farmers of Henry, Owen, Oldham, Carroll, Trimble and Gallatin counties in regard to farm loan programs. Examples of the programs offered include commodity programs which result in payments issued to producers of grain such as corn, wheat and soybeans.

The Farm Service Agency offers various disaster programs that help assist farmers financially when necessary due to weather-related conditions. Farm loan programs are for eligible farmers that temporarily cannot obtain credit elsewhere to borrow money for anything from the initial purchase of the farm to an operating loan in order to get out a crop or buy cattle.
