“It’s humbling. There’s so many amazing teachers in Decatur,” Williams said. “To be picked as the Teacher of the Year is beyond words.”

Gholson said she was surprised by the honor.

“I’ve been with the district 14 years, and the support that I’ve received has been amazing,” she said. “I like making an impact on students and being able to make a difference in their lives.”

Gholson and Williams were chosen from among six finalists — one from each campus. See their photos on page 21.

Letter from the president I always knew I wanted to be a leader in our community; I just didn’t think it would happen while I was still a young man.

I am so proud to be the 2020 Decatur Chamber of Commerce president.

After starting my real estate career in my hometown, I started looking at ways to get involved. I specifically remember looking at all the past Chamber of Commerce presidents and thinking I’d like to try to fill their shoes.

After serving on the board my first year, I was nominated to the executive board my second year and became first vice president.

I learned so much about the Chamber’s mission and how it’s run.

In my third year, I was nominated by the board to be your 2020 Decatur Chamber of Commerce president. I’ve been working closely with the board of directors, as well as supporting the staff

and volunteers to promote and bring greater value to the Decatur Chamber of Commerce members.

Our Chamber of Commerce exists to support local businesses and promote commerce in our amazing town. Even though we have an active board of directors and two employees, the Chamber cannot perform this task alone.

I want to thank the board of directors, Chamber staff, ambassadors and many volunteers for the selfless, hard work they’ve put into promoting our Chamber members. To those of you who have been part of the Chamber events, I want you to know you are noticed and appreciated.

To all community members, I challenge you to get involved with the Decatur Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber offers many opportunities for you to be active and involved. Join us at our informative, monthly luncheons that feature guest

Who we are

The Decatur Chamber of Commerce is a voluntary organization of citizens investing their time and money in community development and working together to improve the economic, civic and cultural well-being of the area.

The Chamber is led by its members. They elect a 15-member board, from which three people are elected to an executive board. The board president leads board meetings and represents the Chamber at local functions.

The Chamber office is managed by the executive director and staff.

Who can join

Any citizen interested in helping develop the business community is eligible to join the Chamber of Commerce. A membership investment depends on the size and type of your business. Investments are paid in advance on an annual basis and may be tax deductible as a business expense.

Established in 1953, Decatur Golf Club is one of the best maintained and enjoyable nine-hole golf courses in North Texas.

Located about 2 miles north of Decatur, just off FM 730, DGC offers private memberships, as well as public daily rates. The clubhouse and pool just underwent significant improvements and are inviting areas to unwind after a challenging round of golf.

DGC also offers onsite cart barns for members to store their personal carts.

The club hosts a variety of tournaments throughout the year, as well as the summer Scramble Series at 6 p.m. Tuesdays and the Snowball Classic Tournament Series in the winter and spring. Tee times are required.

It’s next to the Decatur Golf Club and features two basketball courts, two baseball fields, one soccer field and two sand volleyball courts. There is also a playground, a disc golf course and a walking trail, measuring 0.46 miles.

Big Mama Willis Park is about three-quarters of an acre and features a playground and sandbox. There are also picnic tables and benches.

Melba Doyle Park is a sprawling park with shade trees, picnic tables and a six-basket disc golf course.

The Wise County Heritage Museum housed the Decatur Baptist College prior to 1965. Today its

The Lost Battalion Room serves as a tribute to

Inlaid in the walkway are 7,000 pavers available to personalize in honor of those who have served or continue to serve the United States in the armed forces.

An eternal flame is centered in the park to signify that sacrifice is the price we pay for eternal vigilance and the defense of our freedoms.

Sam Woody’s cabin, one of the first structures in Wise County, is now in front of the museum, and the museum’s G.C. Rann Auditorium hosts monthly gospel opry sing-alongs, as well as concerts, plays and weddings throughout the year.

The museum also offers genealogy services to help people trace their Wise County roots.

Petrified Wood Gas Station 904 Business U.S. 81/287

The Petrified Wood Gas Station stands like a relic from a bygone era on the east side of Decatur. E.F. Boydston built a gas station in 1927 and eight years later decided to cover its exterior with chunks of petrified wood. He even covered the walls of the cafe next door and the motor court.

Although the gas station and cabins are now closed, the Whistle Stop Cafe is open. Stop for a chicken fried steak and snap a photo in front of the historical marker on the front of the building.

Points of interest The Waggoner Mansion End of Main Street

The Waggoner Mansion was built by Dan Waggoner and was dubbed “El Castile.” The twostory home sits on 13.5 acres and includes 16 rooms and eight fireplaces. It’s constructed of fossiliferous limestone and decorated with handcrafted wrought iron on the roof and balconies.

Although the mansion is not open to the public, it’s worth trekking to the gate for a photo op.

Ambassadors are front-line representatives for the Decatur Chamber of Commerce at events and activities throughout the year. They assist with promoting and supporting the Chamber and the development of events.

Ambassadors serve one-year terms beginning in January, and they must be an employee of a current business or an individual member in good standing with the Decatur Chamber of Commerce.

They are required to attend and participate in a minimum number of events and could be recognized as Ambassador of the Month or in the Ambassador Spotlight in the Chamber newsletter. An Ambassador of the Year will be awarded annually.

Wise County Fairgrounds The popular, annual event is the first major automotive swap meet of the season in the south central United States. More than 3,000 vendor spaces have been sold the past few years, and at least 80 percent of vendors’ items must be automobile related.

Courthouse celebrates 125th anniversary

Restoration on horizon

ise County is celebrating the 125th anniversary of its stately courthouse this year, coinciding with its pursuit of state grants to restore the historic structure.

County Judge J.D. Clark said the goal is to take the building back to its 1896 condition but modernize it with technology and a fire suppression system.

“There aren’t many 19th century courthouses that haven’t been touched yet, but we’re one of them,” he said, referencing courthouses across the state. “It’s not just people here, but a lot of people statewide want to see this building restored.”

The Wise County Courthouse was designed by architect James Riely Gordon.

Each side of the courthouse looks different, and Decatur Main Street Manager Frieda Lasater, who often gives tours of the building, explained how the iconic pink granite structure took shape even before it became the centerpiece of the Decatur Square.

“The way James Riely Gordon designed that courthouse, everything was so intentional. Each block of granite was already cut and polished and shaped like you see it today and given a number in the quarry (in Burnet County) and then brought here.

“So they put it together like a big puzzle, really.”

If you look closely on the pillars next to the entrance on the

northwest and southwest sides of the building, you’ll notice the year it was built in relief carving.

The cornerstone was set in October 1895, and when the courthouse was completed in late 1896 after only one year of construction, it was praised as “architecturally perfect” by experts at that time. Local elected officials, however, had a more practical reason for selecting the design.

After two previous courthouses burned to the ground, they selected the most fire-resistant design.

As of May 2020, the Texas Historical Commission had approved the county’s courthouse master plan, and in turn, the county had applied for the planning grant to develop all the construction documents.

“There’s a lot of excitement that we’re trying to do this,” Clark said,

referencing restoration. “There have been fits and starts of trying to do this for a long time, but I think it’s feasible now for lots of reasons.”

The county will find out in summer 2020 if it receives the planning grant. If so, when construction documents are complete, the county would be eligible to apply for grant funding to go toward the actual restoration work.

“After you get your planning grants and construction documents done, they’ll give you three subsequent cycles to apply for (the actual restoration work) and try to get it,” Clark said.

In the meantime, the judge wants to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the building and raise money to help offset the grant match. Events are planned for the end of 2020 and into 2021.

DISD is home to more than 3,400 students and is composed of three elementary schools (grades K-5), one middle school (grades 6-8) and one high school (grades 9-12). Our plans are to open a sixth campus in the fall of 2021 as either an elementary magnet or STEM academy.

Each spring the Decatur Independent School District’s board of trustees and superintendent cooperatively engage in annual goal-setting based on what we as a district want to accomplish in the next school year.

It’s the oldest non-contiguous airport in Texas.
