Kosse Community Healthcare Clinic is open and accepting new patients

Kosse Community Healthcare Clinic (KCHC) opened its doors just before Christmas and has been offering primary care services to the community of Kosse ever since. Through a much-anticipated partnership with Limestone Medical Center (LMC) of Groesbeck, KCHC has been outfitted with the proper equipment and staffed with Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Sissie Roark and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) Frank Boyd. While

Boyd splits his time, spending most of the workweek at LMC and Fridays at KCHC, Roark works at KCHC Monday through Thursday in more of a full-time position.

“As far as patient population, we see it all,” Boyd said. “Obviously we’re not going to do any specialty work, but everything within family medicine, so I always say cradle to grave- newborn, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric- the whole realm.”

“Everything is going great, a friend of mine has already used the clinic and they said it was very good and very fast,” Lockhart said. “You can get sameday appointments, which is great for here, and the pharmacy will bring medicine to the clinic.”

Boyd confirmed the prescription delivery service for those who need it, sharing that he was pleased and impressed with the help of Pharmacy Plus for their patients. Boyd also spoke highly of the hard work by LMC CEO Larry Price and other volunteers to see this project through to

completion and considers it a complete success for both LMC and the Kosse community.

“They’re just so glad and happy that we’re here, and when they get here they’re impressed,” Boyd said. “There are a few people who just don’t have the means to travel, they have limitations in their health; so for the community, it’s been wonderful, I think.”

KCHC is located at 206 North Narcissus Street in Kosse and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Though walk-ins are welcome, you may prefer to make an appointment by calling them directly at 254-375-7001.

Explore long-term care insurance

Individuals plan for many different scenarios: buying a home, putting kids through college and saving for retirement, among them. Quite often the concept of making arrangements for one’s golden years is placed on the back burner.

However, that can be an expensive mistake.

According to AARP, by the time a person reaches age 65, he or she has a 50-50 chance of needing long-term care at some point in the future. Medicare, the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older in the United States, does not cover custodial care, which is the primary form of care in nursing homes. Therefore, many people must find alternative ways to finance nursing home and other long-term care options. Those who must pay out-ofpocket spend an average of $85,000 per year on a nursing home in the U.S., and this is often an expense that has not been included in retirement budgets.

Long-term care insurance can be the best option to offset the high costs of nursing home and other care in most instances. It helps cover the costs of services that aren’t covered by regular health insurance, namely assistance with routine daily activities like bathing, dressing or getting in and out of bed, advises the financial resource NerdWallet. Such care may be administered at home by a private health aide or in a skilled nursing facility. Most policies also will reimburse for services rendered in an assisted living facility or an adult day care center.

According to a study revised in 2016 by the Urban Institute and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, about 14 percent of people age 65 and older will require care for more than five years. Getting the facts about long-term care insurance can help individuals make important decisions for their futures.

• The earlier a person buys a long-term care insurance policy the lower the rates tend to be. The American Association of Long-Term Care Insurance says a 65-year-old couple can typically buy a policy for $4,800 per year to offer base benefits of $180,000 plus 3 percent inflation growth. That plan price more than doubles if purchased at age 75.

• Cost also is based on the maximum amount the policy will pay per day and the number of years the policy will pay. Many policies limit how long or how much they will pay, some between two and five years, states the Administration on Aging.

• Policies require some medical underwriting, so not everyone will qualify.

AARP suggests seeking out an independent agent who sells policies from multiple companies rather than a single insurer.

Long-term care insurance can be an effective way to pay for the often high cost of skilled nursing care.

Make the dentist a fun experience for kids Visits to the dentist for periodic cleanings and checkups are an important component of oral hygiene. Dentists also may be the first people to identify potential issues that can affect health elsewhere in the body.

Many people are unaware that children should visit the dentist early in their lives. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child should visit the dentist by age one or within six months of the eruption of his or her first tooth. However, many parents wait until much later — age two or three — to take kids to the dentist, offers Delta Dental Plans. Hesitance to visit the dentist may stem from personal fears or perceived reactions by children.

Primary teeth may eventually fall out, but they shouldn’t be ignored. They save space for permanent teeth and serve other functions. Therefore, parents should begin to acclimate children to the dentist at a young age to make the experience fun and even enjoyable.

Lead by example

Children who witness their parents putting off going to the dentist or being apprehensive about visiting the dentist may develop their own fears. Always paint the dentist in a positive light and keep appointments.

Focus on the good aspects

Talk up all the benefits of going to the dentist, such as having a squeaky clean and fresh mouth. Many hygienists will hand out small toys after a successful visit, or at the least a great new toothbrush and other fun products to try.

Get a tour of the office

Ask the staff if your child can get a special tour of the office with explanations of all the tools and equipment. Understanding what to expect the next time around in a no-pressure situation can make the process much easier for everyone involved.

The dentist may be able to also give a test ride on the exam chair, moving it up and down, as well as showing off the water fountain and oral irrigator.

Avoid giving false hope

Do not tell a child that “everything will be OK” at the dentist’s office. If a child needs treatment that may be uncomfortable, he or she may not trust you the next time a dental visit is scheduled, according to Joel H. Berg, D.D.S., M.S., Director of the Department of Dentistry at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Avoid words like “shots,” “pain,” “hurt,” or even “cavities.” Dentists, particularly pediatric dentists, may have their own vocabulary that can assuage fears and seem less alarming to kids.

Over time, dental visits can become an easy routine with children, setting them up for a lifetime of healthy mouths and teeth.
