Derived from the hemp plant, the uses for CBD have dramatically increased as it

has become a popular alternative for pain and anxiety medication for many Cameron citizens with the American Shaman lobby routinely filled with customers.

“The side effects are you get well, compared to all of the meds and everything,” Owner Beth Shaver said. “We have to be careful how we say things because the FDA will come in and close the doors, but that is the joy – to be able to help them. It’s so rewarding. When you truly care, you will never leave here without feeling better because you’ve helped someone else feel better.”

Although CBD products have become popular on the shelves of many convenience stores, Shaver said the quality of the product is what sets American Shaman apart. Similar to bath salts and K2, when it comes to purchasing CBD at some gas stations what is advertised on the package may not be all of the chemicals going into the customers’ body.

Shaver said American Shaman products are made and manufactured in the US with the hemp plants in which the CBD is derived coming only a few states over in Kentucky

“What sets us apart is American Shaman, as far as I know, is the only franchise,” Shaver said. “With it being a franchise, that alone says it has to be the It has to be the highest quality of product … When it goes into your body. While successful so far, Shaver said monetary gains are not what keep her in the CBD business. Throughout the day she often interacts with customers suffering from cancer or severe anxiety. With medical marijuana still months away from becoming accessible to the public in Missouri, CBD is often the last resort for many of her patrons.

Shaver credits American Shaman employees such as Angela Hale for assisting Cameron citizens through some of their most difficult times. She said customers often come in for a free sample, feel the effects immediately and become what she considers part of her business family before they leave.

community and the downtown business district”.

Tracy and Cristan are thankful for the opportunity of being business owners. When asked to share any words of wisdom to other small business owners or to anyone thinking about starting a business, Tracy shared “If you are willing to live your life for God, there is no limit to what He can and will do.

Bloomtique Floral opened its doors for the first time last May. The store, located on the north frontage road along Highway 36 (past the motels), specializes in weddings and other events where flowers and related items are needed.

events. Her interesting shop offers a wide range of floral designs, and offers an array of flowers, plants, home décor, gifts, and jewelry items. Bloomtique offers teleflorist services and a website to review offerings.

Bloomtique Floral is a member of Kansas City Perfect Weddings and brings a wealth of experience in planning weddings and the floral needs. It also provides

floral arrangements as gifts, special occasions and funerals.

The shop offers home décor items, including a number specifically designed for the “lake crowd”. There are a number of cute and humorous items for just about any room in a home.

Deanna was a floral buyer for a major company in the past. She retired after 17 years as a teacher in the Hamilton

District. She operated a floral business in Gallatin because she needed quick access to major highways. She offers wedding services in most area communities including Cameron, Chillicothe, Hamilton, Gallatin, Lathrop, and beyond. She is familiar with most area venues.

She chose Cameron for her business because she feels Cameron is on the verge of significant growth and she wants to be part of that growth. She and her husband currently reside in Hamilton.

Old School Farmer’s Market ready to come back bigger and better in 2020

After starting out with only two venders, the Old School Farmer’s Market gained its footing with more than a dozen venders signing up.

The Old School Building seemed more of a local bazaar with area farmers, bakers and other craftsmen and women showing their wares, which was a stark difference since its debut in July.

“We’ve exploded. As a matter of fact, I added four more venders today,” said Denise Maddex, who founded the farmer’s market.

“That’s about 20. A lot of it was word of mouth. I’ve been posting everywhere … We have all kinds of great variety. You know what they say ‘If you build it they will come.’”

Maddex said the idea of a farmer’s market began in 2018, when she sought a way to provide area residents a farm-to-plate opportunity, giving them a closer relationship with area horticulturists. She planned to launch the

“The very first Saturday, nobody showed up. I was the only person here at 6:45 a.m.,” Maddex said. “I said ‘you know what, we’re just going to try again next week.’ The next week I had two, then the next week we had four, then seven and it continued to grow every week. I heard so many people say Cameron needed a farmer’s market. I just decided to take the bull by the horns and make it happen.”

Tracy Reed was one of those venders for the second week. Since then she witnessed the market’s exponential growth.

“The growth has been pretty good. It has just steadily grown. We’re up to 14 or 15 venders. It’s exciting to think about what it’s going to be next year,” Reed said. “It’s a good feeling knowing I can make my homemade baked goods and source local produce … It encourages other people to do that too. It’s been great to see it grow and keep growing.

It’s cool, hopefully this encourages more people to make something. It doesn’t matter if it’s a woodcraft, or something baked. They can come up here and sell their wares.”

Message from the Mayor

Introduction As we move into 2020, the City Council and I would like to update you on the progress we have made in this past year and where we are heading in the coming year.

To that end, we have a number of exciting things going on.

Head Start Program The City of Cameron and The Community Action Partnership of Saint Joseph, Missouri, combined forces to re purpose a commercial building. The building was formerly the Cameron Hospital that was eventually closed due to the construction of the much larger Cameron Regional Medical Hospital. The building was renovated and is now the new home for our Head Start program. Head Start is the new center of operation for infants, toddlers, and young children pre-kindergarten. Head Start can provide daycare services and educational services to working adults within the guidelines of the Head Start program. The building offers state of the art class rooms, a playground area, cafeteria, and offices

rejuvenating the downtown district. Since their beginning, they have been charged with overseeing events like the annual Christmas Parade, Brunch with Santa, Preservation Month, Town Hall Meeting, and many more to come. The board members are excited about the opportunity to increase community involvement. Cameron Main Street is focused on increasing downtown awareness by using the National Missouri Main Street Four Point approach. The focus areas will be design, economic vitality, promotion, and organization.

Parks The City of Cameron has built a dynamic relationship with our public schools. Our school district provides excellent education and we both work together to provide recreational opportunities for both our students and community. This past year, the Parks Department sold the ten acre Park Valley Complex to the school. This allows the school future expansion of Parkview Elementary along with the high school baseball and softball programs, and allows

the Parks Department to focus on a new community park that includes new ball fields.

Not only do we continually look forward to the future, but we also focus on what we currently have. Last year through generous donations, a new inclusive swing set was also installed in our oldest city park at Moose Station.

Police Tax In the last few years, the Cameron Police Department struggled with recruiting qualified applicants, high turnover rates, and retention. In the last two years, the Police Department has been diligently working towards a solution to these deficiencies.

The Police Department began working with our citizens, business owners, City staff and Council Members regarding the best way to move forward. After several work sessions involving our community, the best sustainable solution was thought to be a Law Enforcement Tax to be decided by the citizens of Cameron. In November of 2019, the voters passed this tax with over 70% in support of the Police Department to help

improve these deficiencies.

Fire Department Expansion The Cameron Fire Department completed a new expansion to the Public Safety Building in 2019. Two separate building expansions were completed to add much needed space for equipment and storage. The Public Safety Building was built in 1997 and this is the first addition to the building which was paid with money collected with the Fire Tax. The Fire Department also added a new grass fire truck to their fleet of vehicles. This new fire truck was purchased by Cameron Rural Fire Protection.

Goal Setting Session On June 18th, the City Council held its first goal setting session in recent memory.

This meeting was located off-site to facilitate focus on just this issue. It was a day-long event, open to the public, and held at The Elms in Excelsior Springs. The purpose was to focus the City’s attention on major Council priorities.

As a result, the Council arrived at a

13 consensus on eight objectives: 1. Develop a Five-Year Capital Improvement Plant 2. Develop an Economic Development Plan 3. Update the Emergency Operations Plan 4. Complete a Pay Matrix/Salary Study 5. Establish a New Inspector Position 6. Develop a Public Information Program 7. Identify and Support the Community Volunteer Programs 8. Follow Through on a Utility Rate Analysis Conclusion As residents of Cameron, we enjoy this quality of life with excellent schools, a progressive downtown, an active Chamber, and plenty of recreational opportunities. We are able to enjoy small town living just a short drive outside of the Kansas City Metro.

New animal rescue construction wrapping up

On September 12, 2019 Cameron donors, volunteers and city officials broke ground for a $600,000.00 animal care facility. This project was years in the making and was made possible by a generous donation of $200,000.00 from former Missouri Speaker of the House Bob Griffin, a pledge of $50,000 from the Friends of the Animal Shelter group as well as City staff and officials this project is finally becoming a reality. Cameron Fire Department unveils $300,000 station addition

will be called Linda Griffin’s Precious Pets, is located just north of the current facility at 521 South Elm Street.

Plans call for a 2,184 square foot facility that includes nine dog runs, three isolation dog runs, four quarantine dog areas, cat isolation, cat room areas, food storage and work area. This design is one of a kind and features an indoor/outdoor dog run area. During winter months, the doors can be closed to keep the heat in and allow the dogs to access the runs for exercise without being exposed to the winter elements. At time of this publication, work on the facility is close to 50% complete and we are expecting an April completion date. Staff is looking forward to the move into the new facility.

The Cameron Fire Department celebrated the new addition to the fire station last fall during a ribbon cutting ceremony last Thursday.

The $300,000, 1,700-foot addition comes as a result of Cameron voters approving a 1/4-cent sales tax, which Fire Chief Mike O’Donnell said became necessary to cover the growing needs of the community and beyond with the CFD also serving rural residents outside city limits.

purchased was a new pumper truck and aerial truck. This was another phase of the first phase of monies to be spent ... We’re doing it in phases, as the money becomes available, and there will be other things coming along this next year.”

O’Donnell said his foremost concern when it comes to deciding where the sales tax funds go is the safety of the community and his firefighters. To maintain safety, the department requires functioning, up-to-date equipment. Along with serving Cameron, the department also serves more than 100 miles of rural area surrounding Cameron.

“There is a lot of exposure out there. It’s not only fires.

It’s accidents, lost people - just about anything you can think of,” O’Donnell said. “There is a lot of equipment involved. We want to thank the individuals who passed the 1/4-cent sales tax so we can have this. It’s of the utmost importance to the community.”

Two days before the ribbon cutting Cameron voters overwhelmingly approved a

1/4-cent sales tax for the police department. Funds created from the tax will go toward making CPD salaries more competitive with other area law enforcement agencies as well as building improvements to the police station.

Cameron City Manager Steve Rasmussen said making salaries more competitive actually saves city taxpayers in the long run because it encourages CPD officers to stay in Cameron and not take higher paying positions.

By staying in Cameron the department saves thousands that would normally go to training newly hired officers.

“It’s really going to take care of two things. One is the police salaries and the other is repairs to the police department,” Rasmussen said. “It may be used for some other things like improvements to 911, but it’s primary purpose was to raise police salaries to be comparable to other departments so we don’t lose officers after we get them trained up.”

gutted and had stuff we’re not going to talk about inside. The architect said ‘nope, can’t do it. It’s not doable.’ We said ‘OK, we need a new architect.”

Lanning said that is when she contacted architects Ashley Phillips and Doug Evanson.

During last Thursday’s ribbon cutting she said they spent countless hours creating the blueprint for the new facility.

“We got a new architect. [Phillips] walked in and she had huge eyes. She was so excited.

She drew up beautiful plans,” Lanning said.

“Then we brought Doug in and showed him our vision, he did not have excited eyes. He had scared eyes and when we talked about putting in a giant tree in the entrance he had more scared eyes, but he was cautiously optimistic. So, because of these two, this was able to get done. I want to thank them for that. They put in a lot of hours and it took a lot of people to make this happen.”

Cameron City Building Inspector Paul Beckwith said what SJCAP accomplished in renovating the old hospital alone was a massive undertaking and added he was astonished in seeing the final product last Thursday.

It was a monumental task. When they first opened it up, they had to have a deep clean because it had been closed for so many years.

According to their website, the SJCAP Head Start Program focuses on the development of children from birth to age 5.

Early Head Start also consists of the prenatal program for expecting mothers. In addition to education services, CAP St. Joe Head Start provides children and their families with health, nutrition, social and other services.

Along with classrooms for infants, toddlers and elementary-age children, the facility also features indoor and outdoor playground equipment, a dining area and kitchen, and an administrative area for one-on-one developmental sessions with parents.

The 11,000 square-foot facility was made possible through grants from former Gov. Jay Nixon’s Start Smart Initiative and $1 million from Head Start.

Cre8 Studios thriving after fire destroys old location

New Construction Remodels Kitchen & Bath Although helmed by area artist and entrepreneur Sandee Manz, the Cameron’s newest downtown addition - Cre8 Family Time Studio – is certainly a product of its community.

Manz began Cre8 Family Time Studio from her home and eventually moved it to the Old School Building as part of a startup project and only weeks into independent operation in a new location a fire caused by lightning leveled the building; but a citywide community effort helped Manz get back on her feet and inside a prime

location in downtown Cameron.

“We had just had our first kids’ night out that Friday night and I went over there Saturday morning to clean up the trash,” Manz said. “That afternoon, we were in Liberty and I got a call that there was a fire. I was devastated. I put a lot of work into it. It was very sad, but there was a lot of good that came out of it.”

As part of the first iteration of Cre8 Family Time Studio, Manz spent hours working with the Cameron Planning and Zoning Commission to rezone the property for commercial use, and countless days turning the former residential home into a space able to serve as an art studio for adolescent art lessons as well as art-themed birthday parties and other events.

Manz credited the swift action of the Cameron Fire Department for saving what little belongings she had left inside building with smoke

and water damage destroying much of her supplies. Her landlord, Carrie Lamm Clark, offered Manz a vacant commercial space in downtown to store what she had left, but Manz saw potential in the building. “[Clark] said ‘Sandee, stop calling for storage units. I have a place downtown, but it needs lots of work. Let’s just get your stuff there so nothing happens to it,’” Manz said. “We get here and there was no flooring – it needed some work. She said ‘I don’t need an answer now. Let’s just set your stuff there so it’s dry. A few days later, I said ‘I think I’m going to make this my studio if that’s OK. Is it available?’ She said ‘Yeah.’ I

just painted. I just did all of it. It was overwhelming. You don’t have time to really think.”

Manz said she took a few weeks off to deal with the stress of the ordeal, then got back to work.

Renovating a building for her studio would not be that difficult, after all, she had done it twice before, and soon members of the community began donating supplies to replace what she lost in the fire. The Cameron Chamber of Commerce held a Sept. 7 ribbon cutting to celebrate the grand opening, which Manz reflected would bring her full circle to where she was last May. “The blessings that have come out of this have been unreal,” Manz said. “I’ve had people give me supplies. I’ve had people donate paper, glue – it’s been phenomenal.

After those things started coming forth, I thought, I’m just going to zip it and let it happen. God has a bigger plan. When I started this at the Old School, I tried to find a place on Third Street that was in my price range, but I couldn’t find anything. This is a blessing. It really is.”

The Cameron R-I School District is made up of four school buildings: Parkview Elementary (grades Prek-2), Cameron Intermediate School (grades 3-5), Cameron Veterans Middle School (grades 6-8) and Cameron High School (grades 9-12).

Additionally, a state certified pre-school is located in the Goodrich Building.

We have high expectations for our students. The District continues to create an academic environment where every student can achieve beyond their potential.

The Cameron R-I School District strives to do more than merely offer a quality education; the District “ensures” an excellent education.

All four of our school buildings are Professional Learning Communities (PLC) where student learning is the focus. The staff of the Cameron R-I School District has worked very hard to modify their grading, teaching, and communication with each other to assist all students in the learning process.

Cameron High School implemented Project Lead the Way (PLTW) four years ago with two tracts: engineering and bio medical; in the fall of 2016, computer science was added as well. Project Lead the Way was added to 8th grade in the 2015-2016 school year, and was added to grades three through seven in the fall of 2016.

In April of 2014 voters approved a new building, Cameron Veterans Middle School, and also added new security improvements to all other buildings. On December 4 & 5, 2015, the Cameron R-I School District moved into their new building and it was opened on December 7 with a large assembly in remembrance of Pearl Harbor Day. The district greatly appreciates the support of the community and wants to thank all of its patrons, as well as new residents and visitors. I encourage you to visit our schools and get involved in both the school district and the community!

Cameron’s education system offers highly trained professionals and the latest technology in teaching the leaders of tomorrow.

There are four educational facilities located in Cameron. Parkview Elementary School houses students from Pre-K through second grade.

Cameron Intermediate School holds grades three through five. Cameron Veterans Middle School is home to grades six through eight.

Cameron High School houses grades nine through twelve, and a credit recovery program to better meet the needs of all students.

The district continues to improve technology resources with the installation of wireless networks in all buildings. Mobile com computer labs are being used at all of our buildings and we are currently working on programs at the high school, middle school and intermediate schools with iPads and Chromebooks.

The district has completed the process of becoming a Professional Learning Community (PLC). All schools in our Parkview school district have finished up their training. Recently Parkv Elementary and Cameron Intermediate Schools became an exemplary Professional Learning Community and was recognized at the state level. Cameron Veterans Middle School was recently recognized as a sustaining PLC school.

The Cameron R-I School District is undergoing many changes with more in store. The primary focus will always be on student learning and preparing students for the ever changing demands in the future.

a business in a larger city, she felt the benefits of life in Cameron outweighs the income potential of a larger metropolitan community.

Debbie is a firm believer that “success does not come by accident”. It requires a

lot of hard work and a lot of hours. She also feels it is “not work” when you are “doing something you love”. She enjoys the real estate business, and feels the people with whom she comes in contact make her a better person. She feels that the more lives you can touch with respect has a domino effect throughout the community. She realizes that real estate is a “service” business, and she is here to serve the community. Going viral: Cameron Market’s digitized shopping exceeding expectations

Perusing the grocery store isles may become a thing of the past with Cameron Market joining the trend of digital grocery shopping.

Earlier in the summer of 2019, Cameron Market began its online grocery shopping program and through word of mouth and advertising saw an exponential increase in customers.

“We went to a showcase a couple of years ago that our warehouse puts on. It allows owners and key managers to get outside of the four walls and really see the different things that are happening in the industry and what’s working well,” Cameron Market Owner Tony Clark said. “They said stats show that 25 percent of grocery shopping is going to be online by 2022. If you aren’t moving toward that direction, then you’re going to be extinct. It’s about a year-long process to make it and go online.”

While automation has been forecasted as the downfall of

the U.S. worker, Clark said the opposite is the case in regard to Cameron Market. Instead of eliminating staff due to redundancies, Cameron Market is added staff to compensate for the exponential increase in online orders.

“We’ve increased our payroll for this online because we’re doing th shopping for the customer,” Clark said. “I added jobs. I added two full-time positions and a couple of part-time positions just starting this. We’re doing two, three sometimes four a day. It’s exciting. It’s going really well so far.”

As part of the program customers can go online, place an order and have the option of having their groceries delivered or picked up. While browsing online or through the app customers can purchase their items, then associates assemble the order, store it and load the customer’s car

with the groceries at an appointed time or drop off the items at the customer’s home.

“To go more public with it and to go online is pretty big. It’s a lot more responsibility – a lot more technology than I was doing,” Cameron Market Associate Shannon Standiford said. “It’s exciting for me because it’s a new job title and working with the customers. It was a little different … I’m not going to lie, anytime I

can do something before Walmart is great. I use Amazon all of the time, but to do it with food is actually pretty cool.”

One ancillary benefit Standiford discovered was a closer connection with customers, despite being physically removed by a digital screen. By reviewing the entirety of their order, he has a greater understanding when they have a concern, request or an item is sold out at the time of purchase.

“It’s the best way to connect with the customers, whether it’s delivering it to their houses or bringing it up to them,” Standiford said. “It’s getting to know them and the entire time I’ve done deliveries I’ve gotten to know quite a few of the elderly ladies and some of the men. I’ve learned a lot from them as I’m unpacking their groceries. To me, I could care less about being on the cutting edge of anything. This is about customer service.”

Marchfest grows into regional attraction

The Cameron Pom Squad leads the Marching Dragons through downtown.

Rainy weather did not prevent thousands from attending 2019 Marchfest.

With more than 20 area high school bands competing in the event, school board member and co-creator of Marchfest Ann Goodwin-Clark said it would not have been possible without a community-wide effort.

“The response from the community was phenomenal in them supporting us,” Goodwin-Clark said. “The response from out guests was outstanding. They really enjoyed themselves that day. One of the great things about Marchfest is we have this beautiful facility ...

That campus, the way it’s built, is beautiful.”

Cameron’s historic downtown has become the epicenter of a massive marching showcase with thousands of musicians from the Kansas City metropolitan area and beyond competing in competitions in marching, field performance, drum line and color

guard throughout the day.

Cameron School District Superintendent Matt Robinson and recently retired Cameron High School Band Director Ann Goodwin-Clark created the competition as a way to showcase the city’s amenities while celebrating the city’s deep band history with it having one of the oldest operating municipal bands in the state of Missouri. Last year, city officials estimated the event attracted more than 1,800 families to Cameron with more than 2,500 attending in total.

The Cameron Marching Dragons traditionally leads the parade and appears in exhibition for the field show competition. The Golden Griffon Marching Band from Missouri Western State University dropped by last year for a special visit during the festivities.

Trophies are awarded in each MSHSAA classification (1A - 5A).

Admission to the field show event is a reasonable $5, but the parade is always free. Those under 18 can attend free of charge. Events held at the CHS Gym are free of charge.

Thirty bands of all sizes from throughout Missouri regularly attend including: Penney/Hamilton, Richmond, Mid-Buchanan, Braymer C-4, Lafayette Co. C-2 – Higginsville, Albany, Holden, Norborne, Liberty North, Smithville, Park Hill, Maysville, Carrollton, Orrick, Chillicothe, Kearney, North Platte High School, Gallatin, Stewartsville C2, Central - St. Joseph, Staley High School – NKC, Oak Park – NKC, North Kansas City – NKC, Grandview, Excelsior Springs, Polo, Winston, Tri-County/Jamesport and South Harrison with special appearances from the Cameron Marching Dragons with Golden Griffon Marching Band.

Missouri Main Street, Inc. launches, hosts first Christmas in Cameron With downtown revitalization a top priority, the Cameron City Council approved creating the Cameron chapter of Missouri Main Street, Inc. Essentially Cameron was awarded a 60/40 match grant from the Missouri Main Street Connection. This is a two-year grant designed to facilitate the basic structure and framework from which to revitalize Cameron’s historic downtown district. The revitalization process is to begin with developing an organization with a Board of Directors (BOD) able to cast a vision for the downtown district, develop a strategic plan for how that vision will come about, set specific goals and milestones, and manage the project in such a way that it becomes self-sustaining.

Points emphasized by both Cameron Community Development Director Tim Wymes and Economic Development Director Terry Rummery are that this is a long-term commitment and will require engagement from the city, from the business and property owners, and from the community itself. Another point of emphasis was the ability to start small. Little projects like placing flags or flowerpots in front of businesses, cleaning windows and making customized signs for vacant buildings. Small steps like these were discussed

as pivotal to gaining momentum for a successful program.

Helping the residents improve their perception of the area and allowing business prospects to easily visualize being a successful part of the community. Main Street revitalization projects often take 20-30 years to come to fruition.

In its first year under the supervision of Cameron Main Street Inc., Christmas in Cameron drew hundreds to downtown for Saturday’s festival.

Cameron Main Street, as well as multiple area businesses and organizations combined their efforts for a parade, Holiday Faire and culminating lighting ceremony in McCorkle Park with Mayor Darlene Breckenridge reading ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’.

“It was one of the most fun, most rewarding experiences of my life,” Main Street board member BJ Reed said. “It gives me a better appreciation for other volunteer groups and organizations that have done it in the past. You get to see firsthand how much heart and dedication it takes to have this many organizations and volunteers to put this together something this large.”

The day began with the Holiday Faire at the Old School, organized by Main Street Board Member Denise Maddex.

Maddex reported more than 60 venders participated in event, nearly filling the multi-floor facility. Later, the Cameron police, fire and EMS escorted the Christmas Parade through downtown with more than 30 floats reported.

With decades of experience organizing and participating in Cameron Christmas festivities Main Street Inc., Reed said she jumped at the opportunity to organize the 2019 Christmas in Cameron. In doing so, she sought to return attractions from when she watched participated in Cameron Christmas events as a child. She immediately reached out to the Shriners for their zany go carts and dune buggies and also reached out to the Kansas City Marching Falcons Drill Team.

After winning a drawing earlier that evening, Cameron youth Cache Crowley ceremoniously light up the Cameron city Christmas lights. As the Cameron High School Choir sang carols while Cameron Boy Scout Pack 87 provided chocolate covered marshmallows, American Legion Post 33 and VFW Post 7158 served hot chocolate, Breckenridge reading the famed Clement Clarke Moore poem while at the center of a semicircle full of children. Breckenridge

later donated candy canes to area children after getting their pictures taken with Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus.

“All of those items were free for the community. Thank you to the parks and rec. as well,” Reed said. “[American Legion Post 33 and VFW Post 7158] said ‘how many cups do we need?’ I said ‘I don’t know, but if it’s super cold the turnout will not be that great.’ Later I said ‘Let’s count the cups just for fun, that way we will know next year how to plan. We went through 300 cups … I know we served more than 300 between the S’mores and the drinks. That was just the people came for refreshments and not just the people in the park.”

Although a fundraiser for the fledgling program, Reed said Christmas in Cameron encapsulates everything Missouri Main Street, Inc. is about.

“The reason I know this group will succeed is because of the partnerships they develop,” Reed said. “Downtown is not going to make it on its own. The unique part about Cameron Main Street is it reminds us as business owners, community members and friends and family of the community.” that downtown is not going to make it on its own. It makes it because of the partnerships it develops.”

Reflections: Eagan’s has left the building

Eagan’s Furniture has been a fixture in Cameron since 1958. Last August, a public auction of remaining merchandise closed the doors on the business forever.

It began with founder Roy Eagan (Sr.)

in 1956 when Roy and his wife, Gretchen, decided to purchase a new sofa. He went to local furniture dealer, W.H. Kimes, told the owner he would buy the sofa, and was asked, “why don’t you just buy the entire store?”

The next day, while Roy was working at his printing business, Kimes arrived with a printed contract. Since Kimes was anxious to move from Cameron for health reasons, the offer was very favorable, and thus began Eagan’s Furniture.

Roy, Jr. joined the business at an early age, eventually helping delivery employees Earl Eads and Bud Jones. Both possessed a wealth of information on furniture and taught young Roy much about the business.

Bud, also a local fiddler, encouraged Roy to ask Jackie Filloon, a sales rep who called on Eagan’s, for a date. The rest is history. They found they had much in common, including a sense of humor, and were eventually married.

It turns out that they both shared a number of friends, as well as similar backgrounds, with relatives living in the same general area in Iowa, and both were “grandma’s kids”.

They shared the same basic values. Roy says that an Eagan family motto was “why be

normal!”

Roy and Jackie are both active and interesting people who enjoy traveling, hiking, and visiting many exotic locations.

Both are a wealth of information on interesting places to visit and explore.

They will continue to call Cameron “home”, but intend to travel whenever possible. They are particularly attracted to South America where they find the people very friendly and engaging. On Jackie’s “bucket list” is a float trip on the Amazon River. Both of them also are looking forward to a trip to the Galapagos Islands.

Roy, Jr. has carried on many of his dad’s passions, including Camp Quality. Indeed, the first Camp Quality was founded in Cameron with the senior Eagan being very instrumental in its founding.

The 40,000 square foot building which housed Eagan’s has been leased to a company out of Springfield, Mo. Eagan’s Furniture may be gone, but its legacy, and that of its founder, will long reverberate through the Cameron community.

Reflections: Porters closes doors after decades of service Porter’s Building Center closed their location at 920 West Grand, in Cameron.

Mack Porter opened the store as an extension of their operation in Kearney, Missouri. The Cameron location operated in Cameron for 41 years, and still enjoys a local customer base.

Current owner/operator of Porter’s, Kent Porter, says the decision was strictly business.

The move was a consolidation of locations. He says that the move reduces operational expenses and

that they maintain the ability to serve their business customers from either the Elwood (KS) location or from the location in Kearney)MO).

There were no losses of jobs as the entire Cameron staff was moved to the Elwood location. One worker was on Social Security and limited on the amount of income he could earn, and he decided to retire.

Ken says that it was a pleasure serving the Cameron community, and feels that they can continue to meet the needs of their contractor customers without interruption.
