ort Richardson State Park offers Jack County residents and visitors multi-use trails, playgrounds, events, covered pavilions, a swimming beach, a fishing pier, a dining facility and soon, newly renovated campsites.

According to Park Superintendent Robert Frie, the state park, which attracts over 30,000 visitors each year, will debut newly renovated campsites in mid-April.

He said the construction consists of replacing the water and sewage line on the west side of Lost Creek Reservoir near the campsites and shower house area. He added the construction also consisted of upgrading the sewer manhole to current Texas regulations.

“We have 60-plus campsites, all of them have water and electricity and we can accommodate as a big of a rig, motor home, travel trailer as they want to bring in,” Frie said. “We have good space in between the campsites, we are not a quote,unquote RV park. We have got a lot privacy in between the campsites.”

He said in addition to the motorhome campsite, the state park, located 228 State Park Road 61 in Jacksboro, includes the Lost Creek Reservoir State Trailway which was opened in 1998 and is connected to more campsites.

“We have a nine-mile multi-use trail (for) hiking, biking, equestrian,” Frie said. “We offer five equestrian campsite close to our dining hall over here with immediate access to the trails, so there’s lots of folks, lots of patrons bringing not only their camping trailers, but their horses.”

He added the trails across the park include a birding trail for bird watchers.

The park superintendent said Fort Richardson State Park is nearly 500 acres large and includes many historical sites.

“We have seven of the original buildings of the historic fort still standing and two reconstructed buildings,” Frie said. “We have a museum and interpretive center, the old post hospital building is probably one the most premier historic sites in the area.”

Entrance to the park costs $3 per adult, 13-years-old and older, while children 12-years-old and younger are admitted for free. Campsite lodging varies between $10 and $25 a night depending on the site.

History The park superintendent said Fort Richardson was established in 1866 and remained in operation until 1878.

“Our claim to fame, Fort Richardson was the Northern most fort in a line of forts that stretched throughout Texas during Westward expansion,” Frie said.

He said Fort Richardson was leased by the federal government post Civil War and Union soldiers helped build and solidify telegraph lines, patrol the area for Native Americans and other potential danger and helped local farmers and ranchers with their cattle and livestock.

According to Frie, Texas Parks and Wildlife took control of the property in 1968 and the facility was opened to the public in 1971.

Events Each October, Fort Richardson State Park hosts their annual Trunk or Treat event.

“Our Trunk or Treat is probably one of the more popular event that we host every year and it is usually the Saturday before Halloween,” Frie said. “The campers come in, they spend most of their time decorating their campsites. We have a local nonprofit organization called the Friends at Fort Richardson, they donate prizes to the top three places or campsites.”

He added the fort also hosts a jack-o-lantern carving contest.

“We try to not only make it a fun environment, but a safe

environment,” Frie said. “The kids come out and they trick-ortreat from campsite to campsite. We don’t have a whole lot of cars up and down the roadway. We try to minimize the potential for the kids being out there on the street.”

The Park Superintendent said the state park also hosts an annual Civil War reenactment in November.

“We do have reenactors that come in here, I think we have had them show up from 18 states before and up to 300 reenactors,” Frie said. “They bring their cannons and small firearms and whatnot and they put on a good show for the public.”

He said each Spring the fort will host a living history event where reenactors come to the fort to set up different educational stations.

“Our Civil War event and living history event, both, we focus our attention on outdoor education for the school kids,” the park superintendent said. “At either event we will have up to 1,500 or 1,600 school kids on those particular Friday mornings. Usually, the Friday before the weekend we dedicate to the school kids.”

Frie added the fort also hosts an annual Easter Egg Hunt where the park entrance fee is waived for the event.

“We divide the kids into age groups, so the big ones aren’t running over the little ones,” he said. “It is like a big vacuum cleaner going across there. That event usually takes a whole three or four minutes and 2,000 eggs are picked up. Every kid leaves with eggs or prizes and usually leave with lots of smiles on their face.”

Jacksboro Golf and Country Club

acksboro Golf and Country Club is one of the oldest businesses Jacksboro and one the most unique courses in Texas.

One of the oldest members of the golf course, Bill Gleason said he stated playing at the golf course in the early 1950’s.

“My understanding of when the golf course was first organized years and years ago, a man named Stark laid it

out, in ’24, somewhere in the early ’20s.” Gleason said, “It originally was a sand green course and you still see where some of those sand greens were. They’re not in use anymore of course, but you still see the outline of where they were.”

He added the course has stayed relatively the same over the years.

golf course, so we grouped together and formed a little company called Triple Dub and we came in and took the course over from the city and we have been rebuilding ever since.”

He said they have put $150,000 into the course including a snack bar, sports bars, new lights on the driving range, and two sets of tee boxes.

“It’s a nine hole course, but it plays like 18 now,” Kidd said. “We still have the same greens, but the tee boxes are different. So, if you are on hole number 1 and you come back to hole number 10, you’re still shooting to the same green, but the tee box is moved to a different location. We know it worked because we now have club members that hate what we call the back nine.”

The owner said they also started a new event which will occur annually in June.

“Basically it is still the same except it has been reversed, I don’t know what year it was reversed, but we used to play in the opposite direction,” said. “Basically the fairways and everything are pretty much the same.”

Owner Mike Kidd said the course is laid out in a unique way with there being three groups of three holes which all eventually bring you back to the clubhouse.

“It is the only course I know of where the clubhouse is in the center,” Kidd said. “It makes it convenient for people that’s got to go to the restroom because this is where the restrooms are, we have a full snack bar so if you get hungry you can always come in and everybody gets thirsty.”

Kidd purchased the country club two years ago from the members.

“We just got in a bad way financially and just about to go out of business when Mike and Sandy took it over,” Gleason said. “Basically saved the golf course, is what it boiled down to, because the course at that time was at the point where you come down and find the gate locked and out of business.”

After purchasing the course, Kidd said he opened up the course and sports bar to allow for anyone to play and drink, not just the members.

“We moved out here and we weren’t in Jacksboro three weeks when we heard the golf course may be closing,” Kidd said. “I didn’t move to Jacksboro not to have a

We didn’t want to eliminate our locals, but we wanted to bring in people from out of different areas to come in and see Jacksboro, play our golf course and hopefully become part of the community.”

He said the slogan of the event is ‘Shop Jacksboro First’ to encourage their players to explore the town and spend locally. He said the first Jacksboro Open in 2019 was very successful with over 60 player participating.

“The city of Jacksboro over the years has always been proud of the golf course,” Kidd said. “It has kind of been a mainstay of entertainment.”

He said the course allows for the high school golf team members to play for free during the week with unlimited range balls in one of their many efforts to encourage local youth to play at the course.

“We have got a youth series that comes through and it has players from 7-years-old up to 19,” Kidd said. “It’s a little series in North Texas, so they come here and then we also have the high school team that plays here and they place once or twice.”

He said the country club also hosts the Senior Oil Belt Series which visits 14 courses around North Texas.

“It’s not too common for them to have 90 to 100 (players) over here,” Gleason said. “(…) It’s been a very successful organization over the years, primarily it was organized to let older guys compete in a fellowship type thing. The return from it is a lot less than what you put into as far as prize money. If you’re playing for the money you get out of it, you’re in the wrong place.”

acksboro ISD has been known for its quality of campuses for many years.

While the facilities are lovely on the outside, it’s the people inside that make it go in the eyes of Superintendent Dwain Milam.

“Our people is what makes our schools go,” Milam said. “People who have been in Jacksboro a long time may not appreciate the people that work there.”

Another thing that the city as a whole does to build spirit is its Homecoming celebration. While everyone is interested in the Homecoming Queen, the respect and love given to the Coming Home King and Queen is something not seen in many places.

“It shows a sense of appreciation of what folks have done since they graduated be it for here in town or wherever they have gone off to,” Milam said.

Milam called his school employees “an overall collection of great folks”. It starts when you walk in the door.

The schools stay great with their safety and security of them, Milam said. Working on that is the city’s staff, the police department and making sure the students are well taken care of.

“We hear a lot of wonderful things about Claudia (Torres) and Jennifer (Myers) at Jacksboro Elementary, our receptionists there, but it’s that way from top to bottom at our schools,” Milam said. “For our employees, it’s not just a job, but a mission field.

It really truly is their mission to help people.”

“This area has a unique concern for everyone in it,” Milam said. “The concerned citizens of Jack County are truly concerned for each other. The Lions Club here does wonderful work you don’t see everywhere else. A very selfless group.”

Milam believes it simply is the residents’ mission to help people in Jacksboro. Sam Jackson, Jacksboro High School assistant principal, was hired in July and became ill with Stage IV pancreatic cancer shortly there after. Jackson, who recently underwent round two of treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, said the support he has received in such a short time in town has been nothing short of wonderful.

“It’s been anything and everything we’ve needed as a family,” Jackson explained. “Ever since I was diagnosed, the teachers and staff at both the high school, the elementary school and our churches here in town have been raising money so I could receive treatment at MD Anderson.”

Jackson, who comes into work at times, said the First United Methodist Church have provided meal trains for food on a nightly basis and have taken care of Jackson’s children when the family needed it.

Milam said Jackson admitted he has never seen the kindness lived out like it is in Jacksboro. Milam said keeping the great people in the schools is a challenge the district faces.

Others had solid experiences of the city of Jacksboro itself. David Manley, who just moved to town three months ago because of a job, said he has found people to be very warm and welcoming.

“I had taken a job in Mineral Wells, but really didn’t want to live in a place so big, so I came here,” Manley said. “The kids love their school and I love the neighborhoods. The people seem real friendly and outgoing.”

Jacksboro Elementary School teachers Anne Silveus, Audra Clayton and Laurie Bennett have all had family graduate from the school, but each also had different reasons for loving Jacksboro as a whole. Silveus graduated from Jacksboro, as did her daughters, and she said the sense of community and tradition is what she loves most. Clayton said the way the community comes together in times of despair, most recently when children have perished in accidents, shows this is a wonderful community.

Bennett said having two children graduate from Jacksboro High recently and being active while at the school are some of the reasons she loves the city itself.

he Bryson Festival in the Park will be accompanied by the Bryson Car Show for third year straight when the events take place at City Park and Bryson ISD Oct. 3, 2020.

“The first Saturday in October doesn’t always bring us cooler weather here in Bryson, Texas; however, it does bring us a fun-filled day for the whole family each year with the Annual Bryson Car Show and Festival in the Park,” A Bryson’s Annual Car Show and Festival in the Park Facebook post reads. “Beginning in the morning with show stopping, jaw dropping cars and trucks at the

Car Show to food, vendors, fun, and live entertainment in the afternoon at the Festival in the Park, there is definitely something for everyone to enjoy.”

Bryson City Secretary and Car Show organizer Trish Shifflett said the show has seen growth in participants from the first year to its second.

“It had a really good reception from the community and surrounding communities and a lot of support,” Shifflett said. “(…) We had them come from Graford, of course Graham, Jacksboro, we had some from Olney, (…) we might of had one from Wichita Falls as well.”

“Next year, we hope to add some other divisions maybe

even motorcycles or street rods or something like that,” Shifflett said.

Awards for Best In Show and People’s Choice are also handed out at the event as well as for best of each class.

The Festival in the Park features door prizes, a 50/50 pot, food trucks, vendor booths, children activities and live entertainment.

The car show does charge an entrance fee of $20 onsite or $15 for early registration. The festival charges an entrance fee of $5. Shifflett said all proceeds from the event go towards City Park maintenance and improvements.

any people say Bryson's schools are some of the best around and they cannot imagine their children going anywhere else. Bryson ISD Superintendent, Greg London, spoke of many high points about not only the school, but the community as a whole.

“We have a small environment here, every adult knows every student,” London said. “Average of 18 kids per grade level.”

London noted the “fantastic” facilities at the school, which is new construction and under one roof. He also likes the safety of the campus and conveniences for parents taking students to school.

Having great teachers and a seasoned staff focused on engagement in the classroom is another positive of the school, London stated. The Marzano High Reliability School commitment, started two years ago along with professional learning communities have helped the school improve its test scores.

The city and school have a number of traditions including homecoming festivities, the annual veteran’s festivity and Christmas program along with Meet the Cowboys.

“The town comes out for those things and it’s awesome to see,” London said.

Having multiple successful programs for students to take part in and seeing the town come out for the athletic events, most notably for the regional and state volleyball tournaments in recent years. Having the school win One Act Play honors and garner success in moving making, UIL academics yearbook, metal fabrications, FFA, LDE and CDE also make for Bryson to be a special place to attend school and live in London’s mind.

Perhaps most important, in London’s mind, is knowing you have “a supportive community and church base that are willing to help anytime BISD has an event.”

A graduate of Bryson, she said her teachers throughout her schooling were always supportive and provided counseling.

“I didn’t have a good home life, so Mr. Cardelas and Mrs. Wheeler, I think her name was, would talk to me and make me feel better,” Munsing said. “I was into art and other things, didn’t have a lot of friends, but I could always count on them to make me feel like I was just as good as anyone else.”

Munsing said she has always loved Bryson but did admit that she lost a boyfriend or two who couldn’t handle the smallness of it. “They were from Graham and just didn’t like Bryson for whatever reasons. That’s their loss.”

Mayor Sheila Birdwell said several years ago the Bryson city council had a contest to adopt a town motto. Many were submitted, but the council chose one submitted by former long time resident Jo Jo Thornburg.

“Where everyone and everything matters. I think this sums up our little community,” Birdwell said. “It is not perfect by (any) means, but it is a safe, close knit community to raise your families and have your seniors retire here.”

She also spoke positively about the school, saying it was the perfect size for teacher/student ratio to make no sure no child is overlooked.

“It has been my goal, not only as mayor of Bryson, but just a mom/citizen in general, to be a place that kids have fund memories and always feel welcome to return to, either adults who make their homes here or as visiting friends who drive into town and remember their fund childhood.”

T

his was a geographical oddity in the county,” Unk’s Lake Campground and Swimming Hole Owner John Cope said.

The swimming hole is two-acres large, 22-feet deep in some areas, sand bottomed and, as Cope said, located in the middle of nowhere in Jack County.

The business has a Perrin address, 2479 Elenburg Road, but is located about five miles northwest of the town and requires taking some unpaved roads to get there.

He said discovering the swimming hole was an accident.

“One day, I built a big pond over here and we had a big rain and it filled up with water and I went and bought some fish within a few days,” Cope said. “I went there and my water was gone and I said ‘Where did it go?’ I had a friend of my mine come over with his backhoe and I said ‘dig right there’ and about four strokes out of the bottom of that pond comes the most pristine and beautiful beach sand you have ever seen in your life.”

After that, he said he began construction on the swimming hole and filled it with water in 2008.

“There was a spring over there to begin with and we augment that with deep wells and we overflow it all summer,” Cope said.

The owner added using the natural resources at the site, which had plenty, allowed for him to create the swimming hole.

Cope said the name of the swimming hole and campgrounds originated from his childhood.

“My uncle, my mother’s brother, had one nephew and that was me and he was Unk,” Cope said. “My dad died when I was pretty small and Unk was my, kind of, father figure.

If he was off, he was a game warden, we were somewhere camping or fishing. He always wanted a campground, that was his fantasy deal, to have a campground on a big lake somewhere and have a little fishing marina, fish bait type store and when all those things happened here, I just named it Unk’s Lake.”

He said he did not expect the name to turn himself into “Unk,” but he now answers to the name.

The owner said the University of Arlington told him the area where the swimming hole is used to be islands about 70 miles off the coastline. He added the islands left millions of fossilized shells and bones.

He said the swimming hole has many different attractions for those to enjoy, including diving boards, water volleyball, water basketball and the blob, which is a water inflatable that allows people to be launched to the sky. Cope added the swimming hole is undergoing renovations in Spring 2020 to include a new suspended steel slide. The swimming hole is also surrounded by a beach with places to suntan and grill.

He said the lake has around 35,000 swimmers come purchase day passes and a couple thousand more campers who visit the swimming hole each summer.

“I have people every summer come in here and say ‘you know I was here in such and such and I met this girl here and I married her and then we had all these kids,’” Cope said. “I’m going ‘wow that’s pretty cool,’ so it is a generational thing now even though it has only been functioning for 12 years.”

chools are the center of town in many areas. In Perrin’s case, it is the neighborhood.

Pirate pride runs rampant through the area. Across the street from the school, at the old Pirate's One Stop, folks who no longer have students in the school still talk about the teachers and staff with pride. Dave Walters, who lived in Perrin for a short time before moving to Graham for a job, said his mom and dad both went to Perrin and spoke fondly of the place.

“It was the kind of place, and still is from what I hear, where everyone knows everyone and takes care of their own,” Walters said. “I don’t get over here too much, but my folks still speak fondly of their time here.”

Many folks still hang out here to remember the fond days gone by. Joe Rickell, 1976 graduate of PHS, said while he was not a star athlete or student, his teachers made him feel like he was.

“Everyone just kept pushing me and all the students to be the best they could be,” Rickell said. “I think sometimes we were all just one great big family.”

Superintendent Cliff Gilmore, in his third year with the district, agrees with Rickell about the family aspect of the district.

“In a small town, you have to be like this, so we try to keep the family atmosphere around here for everyone,” Gilmore said. “Everyone’s busy, but I hope we’re never too busy to talk.”

While not a school employee, Tammy Lynne Reynolds, a local photographer, knows most of the students, staff and administrators and is thought of as family. She said everyone there is one of a kind.

“Professional and caring and just totally real,” Reynolds said.

“In this day, it’s hard to have those great qualities anywhere.”

It’s always been the family side of it for me,” Board President Chris Keeney said. “The whole town of Perrin has always been family to me and to most of us.”

“For me, this is home,” Board member, Chad Lambert said.

“This is where I went to school. This is where my kids go to school.”

Member Darren Francis said the “kids are provided opportunities to participate in a bunch of different ways.”

Board member, Michael Adams, who spent the final three years of his schooling in Perrin after moving from Granbury, said he liked it in Perrin so much he opted to stay.

“The small town feel is what I like,” Adams said. “My wife and I went here. My kids go here.”

Board member James Hall said the small school is better for the students.

“Having smaller classes is better for a child’s learning,” Hall said. “Larger classes, like in the big cities, have more of a detrimental effect.”

Board member Linda Richardson, who had 1,001 students in her graduating class in Dallas, said it was a shock to come back to Perrin and teach in the late 1970s.

“I absolutely loved it here and still do,” Richardson said.

“Coming from that size school to this for me as a teacher was awesome.”

JACKSBORO ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPOR ATION T

h e Ja c k s b o r o E c o n o m i c Development Corporation is committed to creating a fertile economic development climate and encouraging the orderly growth of Jacksboro and Jack County, Texas.

The Jacksboro EDC has established a successful business park addition within the city with several new businesses added in recent years including two banks, retailers, a restaurant and the

hospital. Sites for qualified businesses are available. The JEDC also offers assistance in building construction and furnishings.

Currently a Matching Fund Grant Program is helping to fund renovations on existing businessesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; facades and building exteriors.

The grant offers a maximum matching of $15,000 for properties and existing business meeting eligibility

requirements.

The goal of the program is to enhance the viability and sustainability of commercial properties in the city.

he Jacksboro Chamber of Commerce shares an office with the Jacksboro Economic Development Corporation in the historic GT&W Depot, which also serves as the community visitors’ center.

The Jacksboro Chamber of Commerce is organized, maintained and operated for the purpose of advancing the business, civic, commercial, industrial and general interest of the city of Jacksboro and its surrounding trade area in Jack County.

The Chamber seeks to support and expand existing commerce, recruit new industry, promote the city’s rich history and improve the quality of life in the greater Jacksboro area.

They supports their membership by promoting commerce and tourism with the goal of strengthening a diverse business

community.

The Chamber offers programs, such as the monthly Chamber Spotlight and continual customer service award recognition, to highlight businesses, organizations and individuals that work to make Jacksboro better.

Each February, the Chamber celebrates its annual banquet and recognizes a top business and stand out citizens within the business community for the previous year.
