On behalf of the City of Sealy’s City Council and Staff, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our city. Our rich history began with the development of the railroad and of course our San Felipe neighbors, thanks to Stephen F. Austin. The early business community leaders were very wise platting our wide streets bordered by huge oak trees as well as providing for the residents’ daily needs that continued to migrate from European Countries by way of Galveston’s port. The steadfast work culture has endured through the generations as well as the love of social activities from music, bingo and church. Another example of our heritage is the historic Liedertafel famous round dance hall located in our own city where weddings and various gatherings continue. School and sport activities are ongoing year-round. Also, there are many good choices for local shopping as well as dining in or take-out. The Location on Interstate 10 ( 40 miles west of downtown Houston) and State Highway 36 is convenient for commuters who prefer a less hectic lifestyle as well as business and commercial industries. The current City Council and Staff have been challenged with meeting the growth by providing a continued reliable infrastructure for water, sewer, gas, solid waste, streets, drainage and all public safety needs. As a new or returning resident, I urge you to get involved and become part of the fabric of Sealy’s activities and ongoing heritage. n order to extend a line from Galveston to Brenham and build a depot and railroad yard, the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad purchased over 11,000 acres from the town of San Felipe de Austin in 1875. The Railroad established a town in 1879, naming it Sealy to honor Mr. George Sealy of Galveston who was a director of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad. Sealy was truly a “railroad town.” Over time, the Railroad sold or donated land to various businesses and individuals. The Railroad donated land to Austin County to build a school and donated the local cemetery to trustees in 1887. The newly formed town quickly developed into a commercial center. By 1900, Sealy’s population had grown to 1,400, and there were five general merchandise stores, seven saloons, a furniture store, a hardware store, two lumber businesses, two milliners shops, three dry goods stores, two renting stables, two bakeries, two blacksmiths, three pharmacies, three hotels, three doctors, lawyers, milliners and other thriving businesses. However, a combination of natural and economic disasters

in 1899 and 1900 had a devastating effect on Sealy. The Brazos River flood in 1899 and the storm that struck Galveston on September 8, 1900 caused significant damage in Sealy, destroying two churches and damaging many businesses and homes. An earlier fire in 1898 destroyed all of the wood commercial buildings on Front Street between 2nd and Main Streets. After the Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe Railroad merged with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, the Railroad’s roundhouse and headquarters were moved to Bellville in 1900. The railroaders left and many of their homes fell into decay. The Old Central Hotel closed and the Lott Hotel was moved to Bellville. Sealy continued to be an economic center due to wellestablished businesses including the Haynes Mattress Factory, the Sealy Broom Company, and the many tons of cotton grown and ginned in the Sealy area. With its location at the intersection of U.S. Hwy 90, and later I-10, and State Hwy 36, Sealy continued to grow to become the city we know today. — Provided by the Sealy Area Historical Society
