PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Greetings. Welcome to this wonderful publication which highlights The Nashville Chamber of Commerce, its members, and activities. Our membership numbers almost one hundred and consists of small businesses, large companies, civic and charitable organizations, government agencies and individuals.

All these varied and distinct entities have different individual agendas but come together in the chamber to promote local business and make Nashville a better place to live and grow. We are a volunteer organization and so whatever events and projects that are undertaken by the chamber depend on people stepping up to do good things.

Cliff Joyner Your Nashville Chamber of ComPRESIDENT merce has been busy this past year and still has several upcoming big events. Of Edward Jones course, most well known of all our projects is the Blooming Festival held each Mother’s Day weekend. This year we will be celebrating our 25th anniversary of sponsoring the festival. The chamber takes the lead in this fun filled weekend, but nothing could happen without the huge amount of support from many different areas: Sponsors, Nashville’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department, Police and Fire Department, Public Works, Nash County Sherriff’s office, attendees and most importantly volunteers.

In addition to the Blooming Festival, the Chamber annually recognizes a person, couple, or group as Distinguished Citizen and a youth 12-18 Junior Achievement Award recipient. This year Ray and Brenda Goodwin received the Distinguished Citizen Award and the Junior Achievement Award was presented to Wells Hutson.

The Goodwins have done so much to assist with the carnival at the Blooming Festival and were Santa and Mrs. Claus’ helpers for about 30 years with the Children’s Christmas Parade. Hutson has impacted the lives of many youths, even at his young age. In June, three graduating seniors will each be presented a $500 scholarship.

Fall was full of chamber activity as we hosted a membership Fall Outing at the Nashville Farmers Market, sponsored a local candidate Meet and Greet, cooked two pots of delicious Brunswick Stew where the proceeds were used to supplement the candy for the Downtown Trick or Treat event and offset expenses for the Children’s Christmas Parade Event. The holiday season also showcased “Shop Small Saturday” and “It Pays to Shop Local”.

Two winners received a $100 gift certificate to a participating Shop Small Business and another local shopper won $500 just in time for the holidays.

However, the greatest impact we all make as individuals and as a community of businesses is in the everyday actions we take.

Shopping and buying locally, rather than driving to other towns and cities supports our local businesses and returns sales tax revenue to the Town of Nashville. Shopping local helps to add jobs and increase payrolls locally. And besides, we all know local is better.

Thank you for shopping local and supporting local businesses. If your business is not a member of the Nashville Chamber of Commerce, please consider joining us. Not a business owner but just want to be a part of our organization, join as an individual member.

NASHVILLE Nashville is known for its small town charm, friendly people and is a “Great Place to Live, Work and Play.”

Founded in 1780, the Town of Nashville is located in eastern North Carolina along US64 (Future I-495) only 5 minutes from I-95. It is centrally located along the east coast approximately half-way between New York City and Miami.

The town has a population of 5,682 and is the county seat for Nash County. It maintains many of the charms of southern towns with tree lined streets and older historic homes.

Just over a 30 minute commute to Raleigh, NC, the town is a central location for business and pleasure. Its convenient location near the intersection of US64 (Future I-495) and I-95 allows for easy travel along multilane modern highways to nearly any part of the US. RDU International Airport is only a one hour drive. Further, it’s only a short two hour drive to points along the sandy North Carolina beaches and approximately four hours to the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway and the Great Smoky Mountains. Washington, DC, is only four hours up Interstate Highway I-95.

VICE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hello from the vice president’s desk, which is more commonly known as the bar in my kitchen. As most of you know I have never owned a business or even been in charge of a business. I worked for the government all of my professional life so my knowledge of running a business is slim at best.

But what I lack in Scott Hale business sense I make Vice President up for in enthusiasm for Individual seeing Nashville prosMember per and grow. I have very fond memories of coming to Nashville with my grandparents as a child. I remember going to the dime store with my grandmother and Strick’s clothing with my grandfather, so he could buy blue Dickies work pants. I can still remember the smell of the hardwood floors in the dime store.

My grandmother would tell me that once a week people had to take the WWI soldier at the courthouse off his pedestal so he could use the bathroom!

Sometimes we would stop at Hardees

for a hamburger or Joyners Rec for a hotdog. My uncle even bought me a screen printed Dukes of Hazzard shirt from somewhere on Washington St. As I grew older my first public job was at Land’s Supermarket. I would later go on to work at Bryd’s Grocery store and Joyner’s IGA. My first apartment was at Westgate Terrace, I built my first house on Meredith Woods Court and I met my wife on a blind date at Mucho Mexico!

Our children went to school at Nashville Elementary and Nash Central Middle and we are members of Nashville Methodist Church. When I tell people where I’m from I always say I’m from the “original” Nashville!

With all that being said I am excited to see what Nashville has to offer in the future, and I’m sure the chamber of commerce will be involved. I enjoy being part of everything the chamber has to offer that’s why I call myself the professional volunteer. There are so many opportunities to give back or help out and that’s why I love calling Nashville home!

“Building on the Best from Yesterday for a Better Tomorrow” The Nashville Chamber of Commerce was initially formed in 1961. However during the mid-to-late 70s, the organization ceased activities due to withering volunteerism.

The chamber was revived in 1991 becoming full operational by 1992.

A new mission statement was penned by the first president and visionary Ben Casey, along with a committee of business leaders.

The statement is quite simple, but powerful.

The first chamber written correspondence in 1992 stated: “The most significant thing on our boast list is our enthusiastic desire not to rest on any past laurels, but to continue to strive to learn from yesterday to make tomorrow better. Our citizens join with our chamber of commerce in efforts to provide the very best opportunities in education, health services, recreational activities, and all other facets of life that center more on the quality of life, not just the quantity of life.”

“It is not enough to simply say that the people make Nashville special. It is the attitude of our people that is really special. Our people, fully aware we are approaching the twentieth century, are ready for the challenges ahead without losing the flavor, warmth, humor, and sense of caring that comes from our rich heritage, dating back to 1780, the year of the founding of Nashville.”

Small town charm at its best!

Nashville, NC is one of 12 Nashvilles in the United States and is the oldest. The town continues to be regarded as “A Great Place to Live, Work and Play.”

Nashville’s growth rate has made it the fastest growing full service municipality in Nash County, according to the 2010 US Census. This trend is expected to continue as Nashville continues to serve as the geographical and institutional center of Nash County. However, Nashville has kept its small town charm while continuing to grow.

A Downtown Redevelopment Phase I project was completed for the Washington Street area of the downtown area which is part of a revitalization project for all of downtown that will include improvements such as streetscape work on sidewalks, lighting, underground utilities, and building facades. This is just one of many community development projects designed to ensure focus on both issues of depth along with growth to make sure Nashville remains “A Great Place to Live, Work, and Play.” But the main key has always been the citizens of Nashville.

As the county seat, the town is also host to the county administrative building, courthouse, health department, social services, emergency services, Nash County Sheriff’s Office, Senior Center, Nash Arts, and Nash County Public Schools Administrative Offices (along with Nashville Elementary, Nash Central Middle School, Nash Central High School and Northern Nash High School being located either in town or close by.)

Pictured above is the new addition to the Nash County Courthouse, which was completed in 2018. Nashville is home to multiple historic structures along with modern facilities and activities for adults and youth. Residential areas include a unique blend of historical homes and new construction. Citizens have access to a variety of businesses and services along with parks, recreation and many community organizations which contribute to the quality of life.

NASHVILLE BLOOMING FESTIVAL

The Nashville Chamber of Commerce proudly organizes the annual Nashville Blooming Festival which is held in downtown Nashville on Mother’s Day weekend. The event draws more than 35,000 people to Nashville. The festival offers live entertainment, a carnival, parade, craft vendors, tasty food and more. The Chamber holds a contest each year inviting the public to nominate the Mother of the Year. The winning mom leads the Blooming Festival Parade as the Grand Marshal. CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION

The Nashville Chamber of Commerce organizes Nashville’s Annual Christmas Celebration and Bicycle Parade in downtown Nashville. The event is held on the first Saturday in December. Children age 12 and younger march in their very own parade to light the town’s Christmas Tree and greet Santa. The chamber rewards the most spirited costumes with holiday cash. The chamber partnered with Nashville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources in 2021 offering a new twist to events. The parade route for children to march was expanded and activities were added for kids including vendors, bouncy houses, arts and crafts and more. The chamber also coordinates Santa to arrive during the event!

DOWNTOWN TRICK-OR-TREAT

Chamber members and downtown merchants provide a downtown-trickor-treat trail for youngsters.

Downtown businesses greet kindergarten student in the morning as part of Nashville’s traditional costume parade.

Later that evening businesses gather to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters. The event is coordinated with Nashville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources and Cooley Library offering a variety of activities all afternoon.
