Steeplechase Horses

• All steeplechasers are Thoroughbreds whose lineage must be proven with official Jockey Club registration papers. Horses can begin steeplechase careers at age 3.

• Most steeplechasers competed (or still compete) on the flat. The ideal steeplechaser has speed, stamina, smarts and enough athletic ability to run and jump at the same time. In general, steeplechase horses are larger than their flat counterparts, but size is not a rule. Big horses tend to have more stamina, which is important. Also, horses trained for steeplechasing develop larger muscles across their backs – to help with the jumping.

• The best jumpers clear the fences in one long stride –much like a human hurdler jumps in track and field events.

• Almost all steeplechase trainers are based on private farms, where horses enjoy the outdoors while exercising and working toward their next racing date.

• It is not unusual to see steeplechase horses compete until age 10 and beyond. At age 14, timber horse Young Dubliner won three races in 2003.

• Steeplechase horses typically run six to eight times in a year. The season features no racing in January and February, plus a light summer schedule – assuring horses of lengthy vacations. Most “down time” is spent outdoors in fields. A steeplechase horse in the off-season is often dirty, hairy – and happy.

• After their steeplechase careers end, horses often become foxhunters, show horses or simply pleasure rides for their owners or trainers. Hall of Famers Flatterer and Zaccio found “second lives” as a dressage horse and a foxhunter, respectively.

places its highest priority on assuring the safety of steeplechase athletes, both equine and human. The National Steeplechase Association, its race meets, and its horsemen undertake significant actions to assure a racing surface of the highest quality and take proactive steps to minimize the chances of injury. While accidents will occur, important actions have been taken to prevent them.

SOME OF THOSE PROACTIVE STEPS ARE:

The National Steeplechase Association maintains a standing Safety Committee that reviews all race-course incidents and recommends changes to the sport to assure the highest level of safety for horses and jockeys.

The NSA is a member of several regional and national racing organizations committed to race-course safety and accident prevention.

The NSA maintains a safety steward at every race meet.

Every horse in every race undergoes a prerace checkup by licensed, experienced equine veterinarians. The detailed checkups involve limb and joint inspections as well as a soundness examination. Horses also are observed by veterinarians in the paddock, at the starting point, during the race, and after the finish.

The NSA was a leader in the horse-racing industry in instituting concussion testing for all jockeys.

The NSA requires race meets to have well-equipped equine and human ambulances available at all times during racing.

The NSA maintains a registry of horses who have been involved in incidents or have had cases of unsoundness. Known as a vet’s list, the registry assures that a horse cannot race again until it has demonstrated that it has attained racing fitness and soundness.

On the recommendation of the Safety Committee, races for nonwinners are limited to no more than 10 starters. Other limits on race-field size and conditions also are considered regularly by the Safety Committee.

Also on the recommendation of the Safety Committee, some races are limited to experienced jockeys.

Race courses are maintained to promote the highest level of safety, and several courses have irrigation systems to assure favorable racing conditions.

NSA stewards are authorized to take necessary steps to assure safety on race days, including changes to the course because of weather or other conditions.

The NSA’s National Fences have a nearly half-century record of safety, and the Safety Committee regularly considers improvements to them.

Medication rules are strictly enforced, and post-race testing of selected horses is conducted at all race meets.
