Head of School We grow our girls at Foxcroft to have understanding hearts and to appreciate the joys of lifelong learning. These are some of the greatest gifts we give them during the impactful years of adolescence that they spend with us on our garden of a campus.

This past year has been a remarkable year of learning for me, as I started my own journey at Foxcroft as the 11th Head of School. Sitting with our New Girls in the backyard of Covert, I experienced my first Choosings. I felt the exhilaration of ferociously friendly competition at Fox/Hound Field Hockey in November and the battle for The Cup at Basketball in February.

I also experienced profound pride at Commencement in late May. Our seniors were a remarkable group who received more than 228 acceptances at colleges and universities across the world. There were graduates in the Class of 2026 whose grandmothers and great-grandmothers graduated during the time of Miss Charlotte, and there were also girls who will be the first in their families to attend college this fall. Miss Charlotte’s Garden was filled with tears and laughter, as our community celebrated all that has made the Foxcroft experience so unique and special for more than a century.

As I reflect on this past year of my own learning about Foxcroft, many magical moments capture my imagination.

The opening of the new Mars STEAM

Building will remain one of my most powerful memories, as we watched the excited faces of our girls exploring this remarkable state-of-the-art building in January. They were spreading girl energy everywhere, as they explored the building from our gorgeous new Photography Lab (with a stunning darkroom wet lab donated by Diana Hardin Walker ’59, who also served as our Alison Harrison Goodyear ’29 Fellow and Speaker in February) to the wonderful laboratory spaces for Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. You will read more about our impactful new addition to campus in the pages of this edition of Foxcroft magazine. I also hope you will come to campus to experience it in person. It is a transformational space for teaching and learning.

Foxcroft remains a place of connection and community, and I was fortunate to see that in action at Reunion in April and during my travels around the country, meeting many extraordinary alumnae and friends of the School. I remain grateful for the warm welcome you have given to me over this first year of my tenure at Foxcroft and look forward to the opportunity to meet many more of you in the year ahead.

This is a remarkably special place, and we will continue to grow girls here for many generations to come.

This new building is a gift to our beloved School, made possible by the generosity of so many alumnae and friends of Foxcroft, with important leadership from Victoria Beth Mars ’74, Pamela Mars Wright ’78, Bernadette Victoria Russell ’03, and Charlotte Audrey Rossetter ’12. As Bernadette noted at the official opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony: “The building is not just about the brick and mortar … It’s our way of ensuring that the next generation of Foxcroft girls has the tools to lead in fields that may not even exist yet. I’m most proud of the fact that this building was built by women for women, supported by a multi-generational legacy.”

Foxcroft Revisits a Favorite Tradition of Miss Charlotte During Foxroft’s early years, Miss Charlotte created several traditions to educate and entertain her students.

Some have endured (Fox/Hound and theater), and others have recently been reimagined (the In-House Horse Show restarted in 2024). This year, Foxcroft brought back another once-beloved tradition — the trip to Luray Caverns.

What once was a two-to-four-day trip on horseback (discontinued when automobile traffic made the journey too dangerous) became a one-hour bus ride and academic day excursion for the entire school, when students spent a day in late March exploring the caverns in Luray, VA.

A picnic lunch with the Blue Ridge Mountains in the background was a great way for students to unwind after all their exploring, before climbing back on their buses for the return to Foxcroft.

Over the course of the day, students were overheard remarking on the beauty of the caverns, things they found interesting in the museums, and appreciating the relaxed tempo of the excursion. All in all, a great day!

Moving in small groups, students and chaperones explored the grounds of this historic landmark, wandering through the Car and Carriage Caravan Museum and Toy Town Junction, then walking across the street to the Luray Valley Museum, where some panned for gems in the Stonyman Gem Mining Sluice, and all meandered through the Shenandoah Heritage Village — a seven-acre recreation of a small 19th-century farming community made up of restored historic buildings and cottage-style gardens.

But the caverns themselves were truly the highlight of the day. Discovered in 1878, the 64 acres of chambers in the cavern system are adorned with mineral deposits, including columns, stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, and mirrored pools, and are estimated to be around 450 million years old. Throughout the day, students strolled the caverns — some going through more than once — to “ooh and ahh” at the beautiful formations.

Many photos, videos, and selfies were taken throughout the caverns, with one of the favorite sites being the Cathedral, with The Great Stalacpipe Organ (the largest musical instrument in the world according

Goodbye, Foxy Fellow

Welcome, Foxy Lady!

Mr. Northrup handed over the Fox Staff to new Foxy Lady Emma Cesar, continuing this beloved tradition for the team of blue and white!

Alex Northrup shares what being Foxy Fellow for the last eight and a half years has meant to him.

Since 2017, Fox/Hound has been more than a date on the calendar; it has been central to my life at Foxcroft. Recently, after stepping down from my role as the ‘Foxy Fellow’ to focus on my health, I found myself in a rare position: standing on the sidelines. I had the opportunity to reflect on what these last eight years of songs, banners, and competition have truly taught me.

Spirit: More than cheers I learned that spirit isn’t just about who yells the loudest; it’s also about collective energy. There is an electricity in the air during Fox/Hound week that everyone feels — a sense of belonging to something larger than themselves.

Joy: The necessity of play In a rigorous academic environment, Fox/Hound is a vital pressure valve. I realized that the fun that emerges from Fox/Hound is actually a form of wellness.

Seeing students — and occasionally, myself — lose their inhibitions reminds us all that joy is not a distraction from our work, but a vital part of it.

Leadership: Student growth I never knew how much work happens behind the scenes from every student involved in Fox/Hound, but particularly for the officers and mascots. Students learn to organize, to manage others, and to lead with empathy and intensity.

The growth that I have witnessed in leadership skills is astonishing.

Connection: Foxy blue forever I have really grown to appreciate that this tradition is a bridge to the past and to the future. Fox/Hound connects individual students to the collective history of the school. In an era when many feel disconnected from traditional institutions, Fox/Hound grounds our girls and gives them a sense of enduring belonging that they will carry with them into their future.

Though my vantage point has shifted, my belief in the power of this tradition has only deepened. I am honored to have played my part in this story, and I look forward to cheering on the next generations of Foxcroft girls — Foxes and Hounds.

This year, more than 30 students partnered with the Marketing and Communications Department to share different aspects of life at Foxcroft. Using a GoPro, these students shared their first-hand experiences from varsity sports to International Week to snow days, and more. 8 Elected to Cum Laude Seniors Valeska Furlong, Maddie Kaplan, and Harper Padgett were elected to Foxcroft’s Chapter of the Cum Laude Society (modeled on the collegiate Phi Beta Kappa), which was established in 1958. In addition, Riley Graves, Mina Ozgen, and Youki Tomimatsu received the impressive distinction of being selected during their junior year. EPICS Engineers a Pollution Solution The Spring Semester Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) class was tapped by the Goose Creek Association (GCA) to create a game to educate elementary, middle, and high school students on how various pollutants affect the Goose Creek Watershed.

Narrowing their ideas from six down to one, with presentations to and feedback from GCA representatives along the way, the final game was successfully presented (and played) by the game designers and GCA representatives during the last week of classes.

Afterward, GCA Vice Chair Aline Day shared how proud she was of the work the girls had done and her excitement about using the game in classrooms and at festivals.

After the presentation, design team members Nia Muhammad ’27, Eleanor Coolidge ’29, Raqeeqah Khan ’29, Riley Graves ’27, Sophie Jones ’28, and Hadley Diamond ’27 shared their favorite parts of the process, where two comments in particular seemed to sum up the group’s experience quite nicely. Riley reflected, “I learned just how many different ways there are to deal with an issue,” and Raqeeqah shared, “We are super proud of this box.”

HOSA Takes the Pulse of Foxcroft In April, Foxcroft’s Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Club offered a blood pressure clinic for the Foxcroft community.

“Members expressed interest in learning basic health assessment skills that we can apply to our community,” shared Club Head Nia Muhammad ’27. “Zuri Babrow ’28 told me she enjoyed helping the community, and Clair Wu ’28 said she enjoyed assuring people they had healthy blood pressures, which shows how much the club really cares about our Foxcroft community. I am extremely proud of how well our blood pressure check drive went, and I hope to do more service projects next year.”

Platinum Three-Peat Foxcroft has earned Platinum recognition on the College Board’s 2025 AP School Honor Roll. Earned for the 2024-25 academic year, this is the third consecutive year the School has earned the College Board’s highest distinction. The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools that have done outstanding work to welcome more students into AP courses and support them on the path to college success. Foxcroft’s Class of 2025 met all three criteria for Platinum, including: • At least 80% of the class took at least one AP Exam during high school.

• At least 50% of the class scored 3 or higher on at least one AP Exam, qualifying them for college credit.

• At least 15% of the class took five or more AP Exams during high school, with at least one taken in 9th or 10th grade.

Diplomacy in Action Having heard about the Foxcroft Model UN team, Blue Ridge School Club Leader Odisseu B. ’26 reached out to see if the clubs could collaborate on a conference so his newly formed club could gain valuable experience.

“Planning a MUN conference for the first time was challenging because there were so many moving parts to coordinate,” reflected Youki Tomimatsu ’27, Under-Secretary for the event. “However, it was fun to get to know the delegates from BRS, and seeing the Foxcroft delegates actively engage with them in a conference setting felt very rewarding.”

Fellow Under-Secretary Riley Graves ’27 agreed, “The best part was the sense of camaraderie that developed. Very rarely do we get that in a conference. I think that helped all of our delegates get comfortable, which got us some really good, substantive debate.”

Foxcroft Welcomes Director of the Equestrian Center For more than a century, Foxcroft has been fortunate to have amazing riding directors and instructors who have nurtured and grown the equestrian program.

As we look to build on those achievements, we are excited to welcome Merrily Quincoces as our first Director of the Equestrian Center to oversee Foxcroft’s riding program and barn operations.

Over her career, Quincoces has developed and trained riders to compete successfully in the Big Equitation, Junior Hunter, and Jumper divisions. Most recently, as Director of Equestrian Operations at Spring Island Club, Quincoces led program growth, enhanced facilities, and guided long-term strategic planning to strengthen the equestrian program’s foundation and future. A graduate of the University of Findlay with a B.S. in Equine Studies and IHSA National Champion honors, she is a USHJA Certified Instructor committed to fostering skilled, confident, and compassionate horsewomen within a safe, professional, and supportive learning environment.

Another Great In-House Show Series Foxcroft riders made their coaches proud this season by prioritizing good horsemanship, sportsmanship, and teamwork during our In-House Horse Show Series! Riders participated in five divisions, ranging from walk-trot to 2’6” hunters and jumpers. New this year was a Foxcroft Derby Division created to celebrate the finale of our series. Riders who were eligible to compete at 2’3” and above were entered in the Derby, which consisted of two rounds — a traditional “classic round” hunter course and a handy hunter round. Riders were even asked to walk out of the ring onto Big Track and then trot a jump back into the arena within their handy round. Utilizing our outdoor arena and the surrounding areas for the Derby was a blast, and looking ahead, the Derby format will definitely add a fun layer to our series next year!

Local professionals were invited to judge — including retired Washington and Lee Equestrian Coach Gordon Reistrup, who also offered a clinic for our riders — and students accumulated points throughout the series to contribute towards the Series End Champion and Reserve Honors. Longtime Employees Celebrated During Foxcroft’s annual end-of-year employee celebration, Head of School Dr. Lisa Kaenzig commended two longtime Foxcroft employees — one for her years of service milestone and one for her retirement.

Judy Gamboa Recognized for 25 Years of Service IT Support Administrator Judy Gamboa was recognized for reaching the milestone of 25 years of service to Foxcroft, receiving a 25-year pin, a cash bonus, and a School chair.

“You have been such a steady presence, supporting our community with all of our many technology needs and also sharing your deep care for our students in advisory,” offered Dr. Kaenzig. “I consistently hear about the importance of your depth of support and caring for our students. You demonstrate the very best of our Foxcroft community by your concern for them and your interest in their individual journeys. … You make an important difference here at Foxcroft every day, and we are all the better off for you and your hard work. Thank you for your loyalty to Foxcroft, your dedication,

and consistent work. I am so very grateful to you.”

Merrilyn Saint Retires After 41 Years Dr. Kaenzig also recognized the retirement of Technology Network Specialist Merrilyn Saint, who was unable to attend the ceremony. “[Merrilyn] was a wonderful colleague to me over this past year,” shared Dr. Kaenzig, “and we are all so grateful for her 41 years of service and devotion to Foxcroft. Like many of you, I look forward to staying connected with her in the years ahead. She has let me know she will always be happy to help Foxcroft and me. How lucky we are to have her in our community. She has seen so much — more than a third of Foxcroft’s history as a School and that is invaluable!”

From Foxcroft to TIME: Photographer Diana Hardin Walker ’59 Shares Her Journey A highlight of the spring semester, Foxcroft’s 59th Alison Harrison Goodyear ’29 Fellow Diana Hardin Walker ’59 spent a day with our students and community, sharing her experiences as an awardwinning White House press photographer for TIME magazine, and stories about her time as a student at Foxcroft.

Sitting in front of a rotating slideshow of her photos, Walker ’59 answered questions posed by Head of School Dr. Lisa Kaenzig, beginning with how she came to be a student at Foxcroft.

“Charlotte Noland was a very, very close friend of my godparents,” recalled Walker ’59, “and ever since I was a little girl, at weddings and family meetings, Miss Charlotte used to put me on her knee and say, ‘you’re coming to my school.’

I came down here to see the school, and they took me to the Schoolhouse. I opened the door right near the biology lab, and there was a dark room. [I] took one look at that and thought, I want to go here. I’m so glad I chose it, and I really did choose it because of Miss Charlotte and the darkroom.”

From there, the conversation moved into her career, as Walker ’59 shared some of the challenges she encountered as a female photojournalist in the 1970s and 1980s.

“You’ve all heard about the Women’s Movement?” she queried. “I was starting out right in the middle of it. There were a lot of female photographers. There have always been, in the history of photography. But in the hard scrabble, little bit tough news business ... I had to sort of push away my good Foxcroft manners. It wasn’t easy, except they

could see the following Monday in TIME whether I was able to make a good picture or not.”

Over 20 years and four presidencies, she would, as she joked with the audience, perfect her “creeping around” skills. “[TIME] said, see how many opportunities you can get behind the scenes and show us the President when he’s not in public, when he’s not working.

Let us see him not as we see him every day in photo ops. So that became my specialty. … I got to know the presidents because I was always around. It was special, and different, and it was fun.

And I found all the presidents were fascinating individuals.”

Walker ’59 would go on to capture some of the most raw and stunning behind-the-scenes moments of four presidents: Carter, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton, as well as both presidential campaigns for Hillary Clinton. Winning multiple awards for her efforts, including from World Press, the White House News Photographers Association, and the National Press Photographers Association, her photographs are also in the collection of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Minneapolis Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

As the conversation drew to a close, Dr. Kaenzig asked Walker ’59 if she would share a final reflection for students. “I look at all of you, and I think you’re all going to do fine,” she responded with conviction, “and I’ll tell you why. It’s because you’re here. When I think about

21 Foxcroft and what it did for me, it was a school that gave me confidence ... it gave me the best friends in my life, and they still are my best friends … Good luck to all of you.”

Following a robust Q&A that included the ever-important “Are you a Fox or Hound?” (she’s a Fox), Walker ’59 had lunch with Photography students and then spent more than an hour with students sharing stories and answering questions in the Mars STEAM Building, seated just outside the new darkroom with the wet lab she generously donated.

SPORTS Foxcroft’s winter and spring varsity sports teams had multiple players receive AllGreater Piedmont Athletic Conference (GPAC) accolades. Highlights include: 22 BASKETBALL Capping a hard-fought season, Varsity Basketball had two players receive All-GPAC recognition. First Team honors went to RACHEL VERHEY ’26, and Honorable Mention to CAITLIN MCCASKEY ’29.

SWIMMING In a stellar second season, Varsity Swim achieved GPAC Runner Up and saw three swimmers receive First Team All-GPAC honors and one swimmer qualify for two events at the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) State Meet. LACROSSE GPAC Champions for the second consecutive year, Varsity Lacrosse finished their season at #7 in the final VISAA DII rankings. Though the team exited the state tournament earlier than desired, they were excited to celebrate multiple All-GPAC honors, including Coach of the Year Michelle Woodruff, Co-Player of the Year MICHAELA WEISBERG ’27, and five First Team All-GPAC players: HADLEY DIAMOND ’27, MIMI KEARNEY ’27, CECE YOUNG ’27, CAMDEN TUFTS ’28, CAROLINE TUFTS ’28, and CHARLOTTE TUFTS ’28.

“Built by Women, for Women” Foxcroft Celebrates Grand Opening of New Mars STEAM Building

More than 170 alumnae and community members attended the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly completed Mars STEAM Building on January 23.

“Standing here today looking at this incredible building, I'm struck by the power of a shared vision,” offered Bernadette Victoria Russell ’03, one of four women in the Mars family to donate to the project. “The building is not just about the brick and mortar … It's our way of ensuring that the next generation of Foxcroft girls has the tools to lead in fields that may not even exist yet. I'm most proud of the fact that this building was built by women for women, supported by a multigenerational legacy. Girls, I hope you feel the weight of the support behind you.

We believe in your intellect, your creativity, and your future.”

In 2023, sisters Victoria Beth Mars ’74 and Pamela Mars Wright ’78, and their daughters Bernadette Victoria Russell ’03 and Charlotte Audrey Rossetter ’12, all Foxcroft alumnae, together gifted the School an extraordinary $22 million to launch construction of the building.

“I'm always impressed by the transformational nature of [this] School,” shared Wright ’78. “It's a unique place for young girls to come and find out who they really are or who maybe they want to become, and that's done without the constraints of being told what they can or can't be. Now add a building that encourages girls to delve into areas not commonly associated with their supposed areas of expertise, and you have all the ingredients needed to inspire magic from the students. Foxcroft is a magical place … I'm so excited to see what it can do for the future.”

In addition to the four Mars alumnae, there were several others whose generosity allowed spaces and classrooms to come to life, including Kaye Durham ’81, Mary Park Durham ’17, the Edgerton Foundation and Lauren Edgerton ’04, the estate of Barbara Lawrence Garside ’52, Kate Hastings ’78, Hope Haskell Jones ’52, Hope Haskell Jones ’82, Jackie Kleinhans ’05, Anne Michele Lyons Kuhns ’87, Diana Hardin Walker ’59, and the Class of 1964, who donated in honor of Dr. Stephanie Briggs Bennett ’64.

Mini Ribbon-Cutting for Students Before the official ribbon cutting in late January, students started the second semester with a mini ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the Mars STEAM Building for classes.

“One of the reasons I chose Foxcroft was because of spaces like our Innovation Lab,” shared Ariana Arana ’26, Co-Chair of STEAM Club, “so it has been incredible to see how that collaborative space has grown from my visit when I was in eighth grade … and now seeing an entire building dedicated to innovation.” Fellow Co-Chair Maddie Kaplan ’26 summed up students’ sentiments, “We are so excited to use this building and start creating!”

After the ribbon-cutting, students had time to explore the building, where comments like “this is beautiful” and “so high tech” were overheard as they meandered through the hallways and classrooms before heading off to classes.

“The world is evolving rapidly across every area of STEAM — science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics,” affirmed Board of Trustees Chair Elizabeth Lester ’88, who is an architect herself. “The future will belong to those who can learn, adapt, and think creatively across these disciplines and fields. This building is where the future begins to unfold and where Foxcroft's enduring, ever-growing legacy continues to take shape.”

On this day, the Chemistry class was working through a lab on Molar Mass. With a larger classroom and three distinct zones — teaching, wet lab, and dry lab — the new Chemistry Lab offered students space to move at their own pace through all three zones. “We have more sinks and fume hoods, so fewer people have to wait to use things,” shared Dr. Anderson.

“Having a prep room and the chemical storage room adjacent also make things more accessible to me as a teacher.”

“I have really enjoyed using the small project rooms,” shared Aria Vega ’27. “They are really helpful when I need to do something while the teacher has a class, so I don’t disturb anyone.” Here, she tests a water sample from the class’s saltwater tank for various chemicals to determine if they are in the appropriate ranges for the clownfish to be happy and healthy.

One of the most stunning rooms in the building, the Physics Lab also includes distinct zones to accommodate the hands-on learning vital for this subject. “Having physics class in the new building is amazing because the room feels brighter and more open,” shared Zuri Babrow ’28. “Since it is much larger,” added classmate Lauren Ertz ’29, “we have plenty of room to explore our topic through more labs and experiments.” On this day, students discussed Newton’s Second Law: Force and Acceleration.

“We have more space to take our photos and experiment with different techniques. It has made my learning experience so much better, and I enjoy this new building very much!”

In the Chemistry Lab, AP Chemistry students don their goggles and personally tie-dyed lab coats for the day’s experiments, testing Le Châtelier’s principle. “Having AP Chemistry in the new building has brought a new energy to the class,” observed Samantha O’Donnell ’27, “and I have loved the new lab space. My favorite part of the new building is all the collaboration and study spaces.”

The day’s third period brought us to AP Human Geography in the Large STEAM Classroom. On this day, students moved about the space to demonstrate their choices during a discussion of Central Place Theory and the friction of distance, before returning to their seats to dive deeper into the subject. “With ample space and new movable furniture,” explained teacher Mr. Northrup, “the classroom is easily reconfigurable to fit different sizes of student groups and collaborative projects.”

“I use the lounge areas when I have a free period before a class in the STEAM Building,” explained Shelby Youles ’26.

“I also use the little rooms connected to the Biology and Chemistry labs for tests and homework I need to focus on. I really like the building. It gives off a studious vibe, so I work really well when I study here.”

In the Biology Lab, Anatomy and Physiology students had fun testing their muscle reactions under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. “My favorite memory in Anatomy and Physiology was getting to use the new microscopes,” recalled Kyla Peterson ’26.

“To see the different types of muscle tissue up close, and in such detail, was one of my top three favorite memories in any science class I’ve taken so far.” The lab has six new digital microscopes, each with the ability to photograph what is seen on the slide, and large screens allowing multiple students to view at once.

Mars STEAM Building After Hours

During the academic day, the bright, airy classrooms, labs, workshops, and project spaces in the new Mars STEAM Building are filled with students studying chemistry, biology, physics, geography, engineering, photography, math, and more.

But what happens when classes are over? Does the building sit quiet and dormant? Absolutely not! From regional and community events to club activities and more, Foxcroft faculty and students have found several ways to use the Mars STEAM Building after hours.

Read on to learn more about the myriad ways the Mars STEAM Building is serving our community.

Wintermission Classes Every year during Wintermission, the School pauses its everyday routine in favor of pursuing deeper, more focused

inquiry, giving students the opportunity to explore topics outside of the standard curriculum. This year, several of the classes were in the Mars STEAM Building.

In the Chemistry Lab, students in Dr. Lindsay Anderson’s “Marine Aquariums 101” course paired marine science lessons with the application of their knowledge to explore the basics of starting and maintaining a marine aquarium, including equipment, costs, and the ongoing care of a saltwater aquarium.

This year, Foxcroft hosted more than 112 middle and high school girls from Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC, during the 15th annual STEAM Challenge. Normally spread throughout campus, the event was held entirely in the new Mars STEAM Building, where competitors in the two divisions spent the day using their STEAM knowledge to solve challenges revolving around this year’s “Girl Energy” theme.

The “Applied Mathematics for the Construction of Fox/Hound Woodcrafts” class offered by Dr. Christine de Denus found students in the Construction Shop, where they learned how to use basic carpentry tools like a nail gun, carpenter's square, wood glue, saws (jig, circular, scroll, and miter), sanders, and more while they applied mathematics to the design and construction of Fox/Hound

“Girl Energy” STEAM Challenge

In the Biology Lab, students worked through the “Building Girl Energy” challenge (created and hosted by sponsors Hord Coplan Macht and Coakley & Williams Construction). Teams used the provided materials to build and then test catapults to see which team’s

design could launch the same object the farthest.

In the Chemistry Lab’s “Lights Out” challenge, participants used binary code to recreate a series of logos using the least amount of energy.

For the “Rolling Stones” challenge in the Large and Small STEAM Classrooms, teams determined how much energy it takes athletes to "sweep" the competition in curling, and made nutritional decisions to fuel those needs. In the Finishing Shop, the “FANtastic Sculptures” challenge asked groups to construct a sculpture that has both kinetic and audio components using only the materials provided. The sculptures were then tested using a fan and scored on creativity, craftsmanship, stability, movement, and sound. The fifth event was hosted in the Backstage area, where the “Girl Power” event asked participants to complete an obstacle course and then calculate the energy used for each obstacle in the least amount of time.

Arts Week Workshops and Displays Hosted by Foxcroft’s Fine Arts Department, this year’s Arts Week celebration also took full advantage of the beautiful spaces and rooms in the Mars STEAM Building to host multiple workshops and showcase student artwork and photography.

This annual event offers students the opportunity to learn new skills while expressing themselves artistically. Workshops offered in the Mars STEAM Building spaces included clothes painting sponsored

by Fashion Club in the Finishing Shop, Lego flower making hosted by the STEAM Club in the Chemistry Lab, poster making hosted by Morgan’s Message in the Construction Shop, bee box painting hosted by the Beekeeping Club in the Finishing Shop, and character drawing with Raven Lahaie ’26 in the Small STEAM Classroom.

Faculty organizers also used open space in several of the hallways to share displays of student darkroom photography, digital photography, scientific illustration, Senior Solo Shows (senior portfolios), and student and faculty entries for the Science Photography Contest.

During the School’s annual Reunion Weekend, Foxcroft alumnae shared their career journeys with students on Career Day. This year, nine alumnae offered personal stories about their professional paths, with several of their breakout sessions held in the Mars STEAM Building.

Students attended two sessions and undoubtedly learned a lot about the many possibilities for life after Foxcroft. Throughout the weekend, alumnae also had the opportunity to join guided tours of the building.

And during the Spring Open House, as well as Accepted Student Day, prospective families were able to tour the building, and the Physics Lab was used as a presentation space where Head of School Dr. Lisa Kaenzig spoke with families.

STEAM Club Members of Foxcroft’s STEAM Club hosted a slimemaking workshop in the Chemistry Lab this spring. Always a student-favorite, the session was offered as a weekend activity for anyone interested. The girls had a blast making colored and glitter slime.

Paul K. Bergan Poetry Festival Even Foxcroft’s annual Paul K. Bergan Poetry Festival saw one workshop hosted in the Mars STEAM Building, when Dr. Meghen Tuttle offered “Poetic Botany,” where students explored the area of campus immediately surrounding Schoolhouse and the Mars STEAM Building for plants that inspired them, brought small samples back to the Biology Lab to research their symbolism, and then created poetry based on that.

Miss Charlotte was adamant that her students should “explore the possibilities in yourselves.” So they have, and so they will continue to do — now with the new Mars STEAM Building offering inspirational spaces and stateof-the-art resources to aid in that exploration.

Parents’ Association

This year, the Parents’ Association (PA) focused on meaningful engagement and encouraging involvement among all Foxcroft parents — locally and globally. Through inclusive opportunities for connection, communication, and community-building, we worked to ensure every parent felt informed, welcomed, and valued as part of the Foxcroft experience.

I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to serve as PA President this year. As a proud member of the Class of 1996 and parent of Ellie ’27, it has been especially meaningful to partner with the Office of Institutional Advancement and the Head of School’s Office to strengthen parent engagement and deepen connections across the Foxcroft community.

During Opening Days, the PA welcomed families with an information table designed to introduce parents to the association and encourage volunteer participation. We were thrilled to have a record-breaking 47 parents sign up to volunteer!

Family Weekend again proved to be an incredible opportunity to strengthen parent relationships. Attendance reached historic levels across events, including Morning Meeting, the BIPOC luncheon, Taste of Virginia at Covert, and Family Fest. In March, we also hosted the Top and Tail cocktail reception for parents and guardians.

Throughout the year, parent volunteers partnered closely with the Admissions Office to support Open Houses and Accepted Student Day, helping prospective families feel welcome in the community.

One of our most exciting new initiatives was the introduction of Lunch and Learn. In collaboration with the Director of Wellness Education and the College Counseling Office, these sessions for parents and guardians focused on timely topics, practical takeaways, and meaningful dialogue.

Our Riding Parent Representative program also had an exceptional year. During Family Weekend, riding families gathered for a dinner event welcoming more than 60 families. Representatives also helped introduce Foxcroft riding swag in the School Store, supported the creation of new jump filler boxes, and coordinated support for horse shows and riding events.

The BIPOC Affinity Group expanded communication efforts by creating a GroupMe chat and improving reminders and engagement among participating families.

We also celebrated faculty and staff during Appreciation Week with events planned by parents and students. For the Class of 2026, we were honored to present graduates with a gold charm engraved with their initials and graduation date to commemorate their time at Foxcroft.

Looking back on this incredible year, I am deeply grateful for the dedication, generosity, and enthusiasm shown by our Foxcroft families. Your involvement strengthened our community in countless ways. It has truly been an honor to serve alongside such an engaged and caring group of parents, and I look forward to seeing the PA continue to thrive.

Supporting faculty, staff, and students remained central to the PA’s mission. We hosted a cold-weather beverage bar for faculty and staff following in-service meetings and coordinated snack signups for athletic teams, including the riding program.

Fundraising efforts this year were especially successful. During Family Weekend, the PA Silent Auction and Raffle raised nearly $30,000 to support initiatives benefiting students, faculty, and the broader Foxcroft experience. In May, the PA approved funding to support The Foxcroft Circle and other projects, including helping lead the renovation of the Health Center treatment room.

Sunshine and Laughter Mark the Graduation of the Class of 2026 As if Miss Charlotte had deemed it so, the sun shone brightly on the 40 members of the Class of 2026 as they processed into her garden on Friday, May 29, during Commencement.

quote embedded in my brain: ‘You are a terrible driver.’ … this comment caught me so off guard that I still remember it over three years later, but not for the reason you might think.

“This is such a special day for all of us, and I am absolutely delighted that this Senior Class represents my first Commencement at Foxcroft,” shared Head of School Dr. Lisa Kaenzig, as she welcomed all in attendance, especially the families of the graduates.

“You have our deepest appreciation for investing in your daughters’ and granddaughters’ learning and for entrusting them to our care.”

“I remember that specific weekend trip so vividly because it was one of the most fun times I have had in my entire time working at Foxcroft. Shortly after that terrible bus ride, I got to be a member of a team of freshmen who had to escape from a rustic cabin in the woods.

The team worked so well together, and we escaped with 10 minutes to spare.

Afterward, we went to Chick-fil-A, and when we got back to campus, they sang the loudest rendition of the ‘thank you’ song that I have ever heard. That night will always be cemented in my brain as a time when a required work commitment can be so much more.

She then announced Dr. James Sweeney as the Commencement Speaker, who shared his first memories as one of the class’s freshman year dorm parents.

“When I think back to that first year,” he recalled, “there is one moment that I always go back to. It sticks out so much that I have the specific

“As you look back on your time at Foxcroft,” he continued, “you will face a similar duality. There are things you

will remember from your time here that seemed especially difficult … However, if you think about these moments just a little longer, you will see that they were transformative … So my ask of the Class of 2026 is this: embrace the chaotic moments, and the stressful moments, and the times where things didn’t go right. These may be hiding some of the most powerful lessons and memories from your time at Foxcroft.

Or, as was put more concisely by Miss Charlotte, around 100 years ago, ‘Take the difficult hills and let your light shine.’”

Chosen by her classmates to deliver the Senior Class Address, Lizema Cristovao ’26 spoke next, weaving together a poignant reflection on connection and what the Foxcroft experience with her classmates has meant to her.

“Foxcroft is more than a school,” Lizema shared. “It’s the pride of seeing your name engraved on the walls of Schoolhouse and finally being a part

of the same legacy as the women before you. It’s the Fox/Hound traditions and whispering on the sleeping porch. It’s the School Song and Miss Charlotte’s Garden, but most importantly, it is the friendships. The connections that we’ve gained here will last us the rest of our lives … We are classmates by chance and friends by choice.”

“Some species of trees, like the great Redwoods,” she went on, “have surprisingly shallow roots, but they grow wide and interlock with their neighbors to stay standing strong. They’d fall on their own, but together, they hold each other up. … As we end senior year, I see the same result in all of us. We didn’t just grow with each other; we grew because of each other. Class of 2026: May our branches reach high, but may our roots always stay intertwined.”

Board of Trustees Chair Elizabeth Lester ’88 then awarded diplomas to this impressive group. The Class of 2026 has accomplished much, receiving 232 offers of admission from 148 colleges and universities. Eleven seniors were offered 29 merit scholarships totaling over $1.7 million. Thirteen are AP scholars (three with Honor and four with Distinction), eight are members of Foxcroft’s chapter of Cum Laude, and eight now hold a transcript designation in Foxcroft’s Academic Concentration program: three in Fine Arts, two in STEM, one in Humanities, and two in Integrated Studies.

Members of the Class will attend Boston College, Cornell University, John Cabot University, New York University, Northeastern University, Rutgers University, United States Naval Academy, University of Virginia, and Washington and Lee University, among others.

Awards and Accolades Students, faculty, and staƅ were honored during the end-of-year Awards Assembly on May ̠8.

Steve McCarty Receives Mary Louise Leipheimer Excellence in Teaching Award For his dedication to teaching students while recognizing their individual strengths and talents, Academic Dean Steve McCarty received the Mary Louise Leipheimer Excellence in Teaching Award from Head of School Dr. Lisa Kaenzig.

This is the second time in his almost 20-year tenure that McCarty has been honored with the award. “[Mr. McCarty] is devoted to his students, both in the classroom and in the many ways they engage all over our uncommonly beautiful campus,” shared Dr. Kaenzig in her remarks. “He is a model for students and also for faculty colleagues who note how much they are always learning from him and how grateful they are for his mentorship.”

Since first coming to Foxcroft in 2007, McCarty has demonstrated a commitment to providing impactful learning experiences to students. He has taught English, history, and economics classes; coached volleyball and softball; served as an advisor to students; chaired the English Department; and sat on or led many committees. A former U.S. Air Force officer, he holds a B.A. from West Virginia University, a Master’s from the University of South Carolina, and an M.Ed. from George Mason University.

In addition to his teaching duties, McCarty took on the role of Academic Dean in 2023 and has since focused efforts to strengthen Foxcroft’s academic program while celebrating student accomplishments. His introduction of the Student of the Month recognition

celebrates hard work in the classroom, while his genuine and spontaneous Morning Meeting shout-outs bring joy to the community.

Nominations for McCarty were submitted by classroom teachers, administrators, and students, and Dr. Kaenzig went on to share those words of praise for McCarty’s impact. “He is consistently looking for ways to challenge students in a fair and meaningful way that brings out their best selves,” shared one colleague. Another wrote that McCarty “has gone above and beyond all this year in so many ways… He is an all-around educator of the highest integrity and with a strong desire to encourage curiosity and a desire to learn in our students.”

The Mary Louise Leipheimer Excellence in Teaching Award was established in 2014 by Foxcroft’s Board of Trustees to honor the retiring Head of School, who spent 40+ years at the School as a teacher and administrator.

Patty Boswell Receives the Jane Lockhart Service Award For the second time in her over 30-year tenure at Foxcroft, Patty Boswell was awarded the 2026 Jane Lockhart Service Award by Dr. Kaenzig. “[Ms. Boswell] joined the School more than 30 years ago, and her work directly affects the daily lived experience of our students in almost every possible way,” said Dr. Kaenzig in her remarks. “She ensures that our girls feel special, that they know they have a safe landing spot and a ready person to listen and help them keep moving forward.”

Since 1990, Boswell has called Foxcroft her home — and made it such for

generations of Foxcroft girls as well.

“As I traveled around the country over this past year,” Dr. Kaenzig remarked, “I heard again and again from our alumnae that they would not have had the same experience at Foxcroft if not for the unconditional love and support they received from this very special person.”

Having worn many hats over the years, Boswell currently works in Schoolhouse as the Registrar, in Applegate Dorm as a lead dorm parent, and amidst the spirited cheers of the beloved Fox/Hound tradition as Houndbacker, the faculty advisor of the Hound team.

Nominations for Boswell were numerous and heartfelt. One nominator said she “is the definition of unselfish. She pours 110% into everything she does for the students and faculty alike 100% of the time.”

Another remarked, “What doesn’t she do? Hound Backer, Dorm Lead, Registrar, AP Coordinator, Walking Coach, and she always has a smile on her face. To top off this cornucopia of contributions, she is living the motto of ‘every girl known and valued.’” A colleague noted that Boswell “models the following to the students with her words and actions: honesty, kindness, integrity, inclusion, dedication to work and commitments,” while another described her as “a truly genuine person.”

The Jane Lockhart Service Award was established in 2012 in appreciation of Ms. Lockhart, who worked at Foxcroft for 50 years (1966-2016).

Reunion April 16-18 saw more than 156 alumnae and guests on campus for a weekend full of warm hugs, hearty laughter, and gorgeous weather.

Lively events, from the Alumnae Association Dinner Thursday evening through Saturday’s class dinners, offered myriad opportunities for alumnae to reconnect with each other. Thank you to everyone who made the journey to campus; it was a joy to see you! For those who were unable to attend, know that you were truly missed, and we hope to see you soon!

Alumnae Association Dinner Reunion 2026 kicked off Thursday day evening with the Alumnae Association Dinner.

Alumnae Council President Courtney ourtney Maier Burbela ’85 welcomed the Class of 2026 into the Alumnae Association ation and recognized the newest class representatives, Ariana Arana, Maddie Bryson, and Anneliese Cabral. Student Head of School Kyla 26 address, sharing, “Wherever life takes us … we’ll Peterson gave the Class of 2026 oft constellation. I want to thank you, the stars who always be a part of the Foxcroft came before us, for fostering a galaxy, a universe, that we can now join. A galaxy we will continue to expand and a universe we will continue to brighten!”

Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee Chair Cricket Bedford ’85 then announced inductees Ashton Marshall ’10 and Charlotte MacDonald ’12. It was a lovely evening under the tent and a great wayy to start the weekend’s events.

Ashton Marshall ’̟̞ and Charlotte MacDonald ’̟̠ Inducted into Foxcroft Sports Hall of Fame Established during Foxcroft’s centennial in 2014, the Sports Hall of Fame honors athletes, coaches, teams, and “pioneers” who have demonstrated exceptional athletic prowess and/ or had a meaningful impact on the world of sports, and exemplify the highest standards of sportsmanship, ethical conduct, and character.

To be nominated for the Sports Hall of Fame, the athlete must have graduated from Foxcroft at least 10 years ago, been a varsity competitor, and must have distinguished herself by her outstanding athletic achievement. This also can include the athlete’s college career or other outstanding achievements beyond the grounds of Foxcroft. Above all, Hall of Fame candidates must serve as examples of outstanding character, courage, and leadership, which Foxcroft seeks to develop in its athletic program.

This year, we celebrated two inductees to Foxcroft’s Sports Hall of Fame.

Ashton Marshall ’10 was a standout in three sports at Foxcroft. She was twice selected to the first team all-Delaney Athletic Conference (DAC) in field hockey and lacrosse, and was a second-team choice in basketball in her senior year. A dynamic scorer, she led Foxcroft in goals in both field hockey and lacrosse for two years and was the second-leading scorer in basketball in her senior year.

At Christopher Newport University (CNU), she became just the second Captain to earn first-team Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Region honors twice in her career and a three-time selection overall. The most prolific scorer in CNU women’s lacrosse history, Ashton wrapped up her decorated career as a four-time first team All-Conference selection, including following an impressive senior campaign as the Captains entered Capital Athletic Conference play for the first time in 2014.

Overall, Ashton concluded her run with 247 career goals, which established a new Captain’s record. She also stands second all-time with 319 points and sixth with 72 assists. She matched the singleseason program record with 76 goals and holds seven of the program’s top 10 single-game scoring outputs. In her senior year, Ashton tied for the league lead with 80 points and ranked second with 58 goals. Before the move to the CAC, Ashton was twice named the USE South Athletic Conference Player of the Year and boasts three of the program’s Top 10 single-season scoring efforts.

Charlotte MacDonald ’12 was a force on the field hockey and lacrosse teams at Foxcroft throughout her four years.

Then she continued as a field hockey player at Washington and Lee, winning the Coaches Award in her junior year.

As Team Captain in her final year, she led her squad to win the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) regular season and to a conference final for the first time since 2005.

She was named a member of the 2015 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Senior All-Star team. Charlotte returned to Foxcroft after graduation to be an Assistant Field Hockey coach and helped take the 2016 team to the DAC Championships.

She was a travel coach for the local Rapids Field Hockey Team and a commissioner for the Potomac Field Hockey Youth Recreational League. She grew the program through coaching, organizing leagues, and recruiting new players. She also became a Region 7 selector for the National Futures Tournaments, scouting for skilled players. In 2017, she joined Shenandoah University as an assistant field hockey coach. In 2018, she moved over to Dickinson College in Pennsylvania, and in 2019, she became the head coach at Castleton University in Vermont.

Her final coaching move was to Wilkes College in Pennsylvania, where she coached from 2021 to 2022.

Courageous Conversations brought together alumnae and students to honor a remarkable and inspiring chapter in Foxcroft’s history by unveiling “A Legacy Begins: Honoring Foxcroft’s First Black Students.” This project is a celebration of courage, resilience, and the rich diversity that has shaped our Foxcroft community. The permanent installation, spanning an entire wall of the Audrey Bruce Currier Library foyer, visually tells the story of the first Black students to integrate Foxcroft in the 1970s.

Led by alumnae Deborah Rivers Meadows ’74, Veda Howell Long ’73, and Nita Coles ’75, the installation project was driven by their desire to make this chapter of Foxcroft’s history

more accessible and visible to the community. “I’m just speechless. It is so beautiful; such a beautiful representation of our experience while we were here,” shared Meadows ’74 during “Courageous Conversations,” moderated

by Dean of Inclusive Excellence Ranata Davis, that followed the unveiling.

Undertaking a project of this magnitude required dedication and perseverance from the three women whose appreciation for the impact was deepened in the process. “What this has taught me is [that] it’s more about who’s coming, and more about who’s here than it is about us,” offered Coles ’75.

“It’s important because representation matters,” agreed Long ’73. “It’s important

for everyone to know the full history of the School, and it’s even more important for African American students to come and say, ‘I have a history here.’”

When asked what they hope students will feel or gain from the installation now or in the future, Meadows ’74 replied, “I hope that the girls who are here on campus now and those who come in the future will understand that there is a legacy here for them. They don’t have to come and break barriers. They can feel like they are a part of Foxcroft.”

personal limitations and being honest with herself about them.

How Do You Want to Spend Your Days “As we talk this morning and as you attend other Career Day speakers and hear about other careers,” began Adela Griswold ’06, keynote speaker at Foxcroft’s eighth annual Alumnae Career Day, “I’d love for you all to keep a different question in mind than the typical ‘What do you want to do?’ Instead, I’d love for you to be thinking about, ‘How do I want to spend my days?’”

Griswold ’06, a certified nurse-midwife, currently serves as a clinician at the Alexandria Health Department. She has served on the Virginia Department of Health Medical Advisory Committee, the Virginia Congenital Syphilis and Perinatal HIV Review Board, and contributed to the development of statewide directives defining the role of public health nurses in mass care and sheltering settings.

“When I was at Foxcroft, I was certain that I wanted to be a veterinarian,” shared Griswold ’06. “When I got to Duke University, I was flabbergasted by the number of potential career paths that I hadn’t known existed, and I went into a bit of a crisis about that … suddenly I was like, it would be a mistake not to turn my view more lantern-like and learn what else is even out there.”

“Second semester of my sophomore year,” she continued, “I looked at the

whole course catalog and picked four classes from four totally different departments, knowing that I had this unique opportunity to be in college and soak up so many things.”

Doing that changed the entire trajectory of her career. Leading her from an interest in the intersection between government and NGOs in providing essential services, to a study abroad, and the discovery of midwifery. “I hadn’t really heard of midwives before, other than in a medieval sense. I didn’t know they were still a thing. I got back to Duke and started learning more; started shadowing midwives at Duke Hospital, and learned that I love working one-on-one with people.”

Griswold ’06 would go on to get a nursing degree from Georgetown University and a Master’s in nursemidwifery from Vanderbilt University.

As she progressed in her midwifery career, another curveball would come in the form of realizing some

I wanted this to be different about myself, and it took being a kind and loving student of myself to finally admit that this is not good for me.” She had also lost hearing in one ear as a child, and wearing masks came to realize she read lips more than she had thought.

“These felt like real speed bumps for me and my career. So again, what kind of days do you want to have?

What do you want your professional life to look like? These questions can change over time, and that’s okay.

Being responsive to them kindly is a skill that I encourage you to work on.”

From there, Griswold ’06 would go on to work in public health at both the state and local levels, which is where she remains. “I get to practice midwifery in two distinct ways that really fill my cup. One of those ways is through public health thinking about population-level interventions and responses. The other part of my job is that direct patient care piece, and this is really where my heart is.”

Griswold ’06 finished by reminding students to think about how they want to spend their days, and encouraging them to “reach out to the wide network of Foxcroft alums who would love to help you. I would love to help you … please reach out.”

So again, what kind of days do you want to have?

Alumnae Career Day

Alumnae Career Day began with a fantastic keynote address by Adela Griswold ’06, a certified nurse-midwife currently serving as a clinician at the Alexandria Health Department, followed by a morning of stimulating breakout sessions conducted by nine alumnae, representing classes ranging from 1981 to 2017, who graciously gave their time to share stories about their professional paths with students.

Career Day breakout session speakers included: Brooke Landry ’96, Dr. Wendy Anderson Garland ’86, Marisa Sanders Gornet ’16, Morgan Rose ’17, Jeanine Primm Jones ’81, Donnie Johnson Soddu ’06, Lesa Snyder Meinze ’81, Leandra Ganci ’99, Cindy Polk ’82, and Adela Griswold ’06, who served as the day’s keynote speaker.

Welcome Reception Head of School Dr. Lisa Kaenzig was excited to host her first Reunion Welcome Reception at Covert, where alumnae from 1954 to 2021 gathered to reminisce about their time at Foxcroft and share their life journeys since leaving its gates. Following the reception, the beloved Sing Sing tradition brought students and alumnae together in the Fox and Hound rooms, filling the evening with drums and spirit.

1991 CRICKET BROWNE COLLINS: I had a wonderful visit to California in December with my youngest, Liam (12), whose dream and Christmas present was a stay on the Queen Mary in Long Beach.

He’s an avid boat enthusiast. It really was a fun trip with so many exhibits to see and so much history to learn about on the boat. Also enjoyed a great visit in Los Angeles at the La Brea Tar Pits and a visit with JENNIFER WILMANS ’91 and her son, Heath. Always wonderful to reconnect for Foxcroft Girls.

2009 SARAH NELSON COVINGTON: Sarah and husband Travis celebrated the long-awaited adoption of their daughter, Leah. Leah shares a love for horses with her mother, Sarah, “MIMI” VALERY MICHEL NELSON ’77, aunt SHERRY NELSON YOUNG ’04, and cousin Iris. Maybe two more Hounds will make up the next generation of Foxcroft girls!

Farewell & Ƌank You The Foxcroft community remembers former Board of Trustees members.

Frances “Chair” Drexel Cheston Train ’44 Frances “Francie” Drexel Cheston Train, known by her classmates as “Chair,” passed away on February 26, 2026, in Isleboro, ME. Frances was a member of the Class of 1944 and served on the Foxcroft Board of Trustees from 1971 to 1974.

During her time at Foxcroft, Frances took part in many activities, including being a member of the Riding Officer Club – then known as the “WOPS”, Head of the Honor Board, and a member of just about every club Foxcroft offered.

She was even one of the students chosen to go off to drill training at the WAC’s camp at Fort Oglethorpe, GA, and then return as one of the instructors for the rest of the School.

She married Whitney Tower in 1947 and had four children: Alix Tower Thorne ’67, Whitney Tower Jr., Frances Tower Thacher ’72 (who predeceased her), and Harry Payne Tower. They lived on Long Island until her divorce,

moving in 1968 to Bedford, NY. She was married to Hugh Fosburgh from 1968 to 1976. In 1977, she married John Train, welcoming his daughters Musa Train Klebnikov, Nina Train, and Lisa Train Pinnington into the family.

Later in life, she was the author of three books – In Those Days: Tales of a Happy Childhood 1926-1940, A Carolina Plantation Remembered, and Ebb Tide: Snapshots from My Three Lives. She was rarely without one of her many dogs, rotating through Labradors, Jack Russells, and Boston Terriers.

Albert Devery Ernest, Jr. Albert Devery Ernest, Jr., passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2025.

He was the father of Lele Ernest ’80 and served on the Foxcroft Board of Trustees from 1998 to 2002.

In 1954, Albert graduated from the University of Virginia. After graduation, he enjoyed career success in the forest products and banking businesses and eventually organized Albert Ernest Enterprises, a consulting firm, and later

Allied Timber Company, a manufacturer of wood products. He began his second career as President and CEO of Barnett Bank of Jacksonville, Florida, the system’s lead bank. During his banking career, he was a member of Reserve City Bankers and the Conference Board. He retired in 1991 as President and Chief Operating Officer of the holding company, Barnett Banks, Inc. Later in life, he wrote about his family and told his own story for his grandchildren, Devery and Shelby, in Son of the Man Who Rode the Mule Around the World. In 2012, he published a collection of his poems, Migrations. In 2013, he published a book of photographs of a lifetime of hunting and fishing, titled Family, Friends, Feathers, and Fins, 1942-2011.

In 2019, he published The Bonus Years with his thoughts about growing old.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Donna, their son Albert D. “Pepper” Ernest III, and many other family and friends. Their daughter, Lise “Lele,” passed away in 1997.

Alumnae on Campus FOX/HOUND FIELD HOCKEY: Years may pass, but the memories of Fox/Hound competition and the friendships it fostered remain strong. These alumnae are a testament to the lasting impact of Foxcroft traditions.
