REFLECTIONS on community support

2021-22 Season at a Glance • Fox Cities Performing Arts Center

Our community stood together...

With the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center’s building reopening in the early part of the 2021-22 Season, we are so thankful for the generous and continual support from our community. From patrons to partners and everyone in between, you have helped make the arts come alive once again in this multicultural gathering place.

Although the 2021-22 Season looked a little different than previous ones, we are beyond grateful for the ways in which the community came together to celebrate and provide financial support. With contributions to the Act 2 Fund, the Center put additional health and safety measures in place and continued to deliver exceptional programming that inspired, educated and engaged our community and supported modified education initiatives to fit various classroom styles.

When the building reopened at the start of the 2021-22 Season, it was truly inspirational to see so many return to live performing arts experiences. The joy expressed by community members and patrons demonstrates the value and power of the arts in providing a renewed sense of hope and clarity. Thanks to your support as Season Ticket Holders, Donors and Advocates, the performing arts are alive once again at your Fox Cities P.A.C.

Take a moment to reflect on the 2021-22 Season, and the programs and people that defined it.

Coming Back Together

As people returned to the Center to share in live, in-person experiences, they had the opportunity to heal and emerge through a challenging time. The community coming back together also confirmed the steadfast dedication, support and loyalty for this local, nonprofit, multicultural gathering place. The Fox Cities P.A.C. extends its gratitude for the community’s confidence in its ability to offer safe live performing arts experiences.

Center Staff Demonstrate Adaptability

To ensure the health and safety of all who entered the Fox Cities P.A.C., team members prepared the building for its reopening. The Fox Cities Performing Arts Center’s Lead Facilities Supervisor, Zara Gudiño, and the facility services team cleaned, disinfected and sanitized the building. “Patrons, staff and volunteers felt more comfortable, knowing that necessary precautions were being taken at the Center,” Zara shared.

The community reentered the Fox Cities P.AC.’s building in August 2021 for Appleton’s Mile of Music. Audiences enjoyed their first in-person performances at the Center on October 16 with One-Man Star Wars® Trilogy and One-Man Avengers: A Parody in the Kimberly-Clark Theater. This was followed by 44,187 patrons attending Wicked in October and November after 594 days of darkness in Thrivent Hall. The Fox Cities Performing Arts Center’s Event Manager, Abby Mueller commented, “It was so refreshing to be back and socially interact with people again. Returning to live, in-person experiences also had a tremendous impact on the community. It gave them a chance to get out of the house, interact and network with others.”

“The 2021-22 Season was a time to reevaluate and enhance policies and procedures,” stated the Fox Cities P.A.C.’s Senior Manager of Guest Experience, Pilar Martinez. Patrons received and managed their tickets by downloading them to a mobile device, providing a no-contact experience, removing additional possibilities of contamination. Guests also enjoyed the Center’s new food and beverage ordering process, the Toast Takeout app, placing their orders with a tap of a button. “Guests don’t have to wait in lines or worry about getting back to their seats late when they use the app,” Pilar shared. “Adding the Toast app as an ordering option was a huge transition but it was definitely worth it.”

The community gathered once again and the Center was renewed, filled with smiles and the sounds of laughter.
The energy was f ierce in the Center during Wicked’s run. It was an exciting and thrilling time for everyone involved.

Overwhelming Community Support

By partnering with 26 organizations and businesses, 10,492 community members of all ages, backgrounds, abilities and interests engaged in virtual and in-person activities through the Community First Community Engagement Series. Having both virtual and in-person experiences allowed each community member to engage in the series’ activities at their own comfort level, gathering to deepen their knowledge and appreciation of the arts.

With a wide variety of interactive and free arts experiences to choose from, the community eagerly participated in the community engagement activities. During Make Music Day in June 2022, people experienced downtown Appleton, learning to play various musical instruments from around the world. Some stopped by downtown Appleton’s coffee shop and Center Restaurant Partner, ACOCA for a poetry reading inspired by the touring Broadway production of Hadestown. Others enjoyed seeing Elsa’s coronation dress and orb up close from Disney’s Frozen on display at the Elisha D. Smith Public Library in Menasha April-May 2022 prior to the Broadway production in May. Through interactive experiences such as these, community members built connections with one another over a shared interest.

A Center Preferred Restaurant Partner, ACOCA Coffee, saw business pick up again during the 2021-22 Season. This coffee shop is one of many local businesses that draws in more customers when there is Center activity, thus increasing their revenue. Bill Wetzel, co-owner of the coffee shop, shared, “It was clear how impactful losing the shows at the Center was from foot traffic to cast members to Center staff and volunteers stopping by for a coffee. We were pleased to see people walking around in downtown Appleton again, getting back to some semblance of themselves.”

Patrons were also overjoyed about returning to the Fox Cities P.A.C. Tim Van Roy, an Annual Partner to the Center since 2008, was delighted to see the building reopen to the public. Tim became an Annual Partner when he “realized that not everyone has a chance to experience exciting, sometimes lifechanging moments during a live performance, especially young children.” Tim was one of many who patiently waited for the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center to open again. “The energy in the Fox Cities P.A.C. felt a bit more electric once we returned. Live theater is a gift we will never take for granted.”

From patrons of the performing arts to students and business partners, the Center adapted to people’s needs. The community continued enjoying and appreciating the arts because of reimagined day-to-day procedures and activities at the Fox Cities P.A.C. Now more than ever before, this community has discovered the power of the arts to heal, empower and unite.

The community rediscovered the importance of connection, compassion and passion as the Fox Cities P.A.C.’s doors opened at the start of the 2021-22 Season. With their support, various Center programs and initiatives that educate, build relationships and deepen the appreciation of the arts could return in person.

Community Impact Opportunities Enhance Enjoyment of Live Performing Arts Experiences

Center Stage High School Musical Theater Program

More than 1,350 high school students from 24 high schools throughout Northeastern Wisconsin participated in the Center Stage High School Musical Theater Program in the 2021-22 Season. Feeding their creativity, imagination and innovation, the students built confidence and relationships with each other through arts performances and workshop opportunities. During the Broadway run of Hairspray at the Center in February 2022, Center Stage Program students learned the choreography to the show’s “You Can’t Stop the Beat” in a virtual dance workshop. Jacob Massart, a senior from

Notre Dame de la Baie Academy in Green Bay, and Student Ambassador for the 2021-22 Center Stage Program stated, “I never took dance growing up, so being able to participate in a workshop that focused on dance was a great way to lean more and challenge myself. I appreciated the interactivity of everyone involved.”

Participating schools and students performed in-person on Saturday, May 7, 2022, on Thrivent Hall’s stage in the Center Stage High School Musical Theater Showcase, featuring a Tony Awards® style red carpet experience. Students and community members celebrated local talent and performing arts education in high schools at this special showcase event. Notre Dame de la Baie Academy’s Director, Andrea Gilson said, “Participating in the 2021-22 Center Stage Showcase was an experience my students and I will always remember. It was magical being surrounded by gifted and passionate performers from different schools.”

Families came together at the Fox Cities P.A.C. in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of the Fox Valley during the 2021-22 Season through the nationwide Family First Nights® Program. The families were provided a deeper perspective of what they would be seeing, attending Broadway performances of Dear Evan Hansen and Disney’s Frozen Prior to each show, family members

In the 2021-22 Season, Kaukauna High School students actively engaged with the arts through the Frank C. Shattuck Performing Arts Touch the Hearts of Students (P.A.T.H.S.) Program. Through hands-on engagement activities, these students focused on character building themes, community awareness and new art forms.

During a three-month project, these students delved into the themes of self-love and body positivity by exploring how characters in Hairspray navigate

these issues. The program culminated in a fashion show held in the KimberlyClark Theater where the students presented repurposed pieces of clothing.

“I learned to embrace myself and have fun,” Makhia Purdy, a P.A.T.H.S. Program participant and Kaukauna High School sophomore shared. Amber Ortega, a teacher at Kaukauna High School stated, “I wanted my students involved in the P.A.T.H.S. Program because it gave them the opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone. This opportunity was life changing for a lot of them.”

learned about relevant themes and took part in activities. The workshop for Disney’s Frozen introduced Nordic influences and staging elements, followed by watercolor painting of the Northern Lights. These families embraced the magic of Broadway and connected wth each other creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Area educators found ways to create special moments for their students during an unusual school year. In the 2021-22 Season, 14,316 students, educators and chaperones from 140 schools attended virtual and in-person educational performances through the Amcor Education Series. Amy S., a first grade teacher from Neenah’s Lakeview Elementary School who took her class to see Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus! (The Musical!) commented, “What a FANTASTIC show! My kiddos loved it! They were so funny when they were saying, ‘This was

the best play I’ve ever seen...’ Me thinking, this is the first show you’ve ever seen! It felt so good to be back at the Fox Cities P.A.C.!”

Through the use of study guide materials, educators connected classroom lessons to performing arts experiences, allowing students to learn more creatively. Heather Olson, a Kindergarten teacher at Horizons Elementary in Appleton, shared, “The virtual performances through the Center allowed students to see live theater. We used these experiences to compare and contrast with the books we were reading of the same stories.”

Center’s

As a local community nonprofit arts and cultural organization, the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center is very fortunate to

by a supportive community committed to the Center’s mission and its impact. The 2021-22 Season allowed us to see that support shine even brighter as the Center worked toward reopening its doors. With sound guidance and insight from public health and healthcare leaders, the Fox Cities P.A.C. extends its appreciation to those who acted as advisors in preparation for welcoming the community back. Gratitude must also be given to our staff and volunteers for working diligently to ensure patrons’ health and safety was at the forefront through innovative processes and procedures including touchless environments and building enhancements.

There was a buzz and energy in the air as the community reconnected, sharing in the magic of live theater. Once again, people were moved by in-person performing arts

experiences, finding healing, peace and inspiration. It’s a wonderful reminder of how impactful community support through contributed income and ticket purchases is to the Center’s continued success.

It is heartwarming to see such dedication and loyalty from our community, from the return of Season Ticket Holders, to contributions to the Act 2 Fund and the Annual Partner Campaign, your support ensures the Center’s mission remains strong.

In the 2021-22 Season, the Center welcomed more than 8,000 Season Ticket Holders and 779 Individual and Business Annual Partners. These numbers illustrate the level of investment the community has in the Fox Cities P.A.C. The immense amount of financial, professional, and emotional support given to the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center is deeply moving.

While the community has always demonstrated loyalty that is greatly appreciated, the last few years have shown an even greater emphasis on the strength and compassion of our community. To show our gratitude for helping the Center continue its mission, it was imperative to demonstrate flexibility and a sense of adaptability to meet people where they felt most comfortable. At the beginning of the 2021-22 school year, educators were limited in what experiences they could provide their students. Since many were not planning field trips, the Center continued its partnership by delivering the first half of the Amcor Education Series with virtual options in place. Those educational experiences continued to support educators as they engaged their students in new, innovative ways.

The Center also worked very closely with local and national health care professionals to best understand how to welcome the public back safely. It is the Center’s top priority to ensure everyone’s health and safety as they visit the Fox Cities P.A.C. Throughout the pandemic, it was important to be clear, transparent and open about the challenges the Center was facing and what was learned. The changes to plans to mitigate the exposure risk moving through the 2021-22 Season were openly communicated. This helped the community understand what to expect and why. It was wonderful to see the belief in the Center’s ability to create a safe environment, welcoming all back to enjoying live, in-person events.

As a community, we worked in unity toward the common goal of bringing the live performing arts back to the Fox Cities P.A.C. These collaborative efforts made it possible for the Center to reopen. The 2021-22 Season reinforced how important it is to be there for one another, be understanding, helping where you can and being fully present. It is the dedication of the community, of the Center’s partners and patrons who make the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center an incredible premier venue.
