2020-21 Season at a Glance

The 2020-21 Season will go down in history.

Presented virtually by the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center organization with doors to the building closed, the mission remained active, bringing inspiration, connection and a sense of belonging through the arts.

The Center’s curatorial vision of challenging perceptions took center stage during the 2020-21 Season. While in a typical year this curatorial vision guides the programs and performances delivered to the community, this season it stood for something more as the perception of being an in-person community gathering place was challenged when having access to a physical space to gather was not feasible.

Inspired by our community and fueled by the support of our generous partners and Act 2 Fund donors, the team got creative and developed new virtual opportunities to share in the arts, presented outdoor events as it was safe to do so and engaged students in a variety of ways from wherever they were learning.

While it wasn’t the same as gathering in person, it showed the importance of flexibility, creativity and resilience in creating moments that engage, educate and inspire through the arts.

We hope you take a moment to look back at some of the programs that defined our 2020-21 Season.

ENGAGING STUDENTS THROUGH THE ARTS FROM WHEREVER THEY ARE LEARNING The 2020-21 school year was presented in a variety of formats across Northeast Wisconsin and the Fox Cities P.A.C. worked to ensure students could enjoy engaging arts experiences wherever their lessons were being conducted.

Through a mix of on-demand and live virtual arts programming, grades PreK-12 were invited to participatory arts experiences tailored to bring their classroom lessons to life in new, unique ways. Through five virtual programs and tailored workshops, students explored science, music, language arts, storytelling, puppetry and more.

Education resources bring the arts to homes and classrooms During the 2020-21 Season, educators, parents and everyone preparing at-home classrooms could find fun, arts-influenced resources on the Center’s at-home learning webpage. Using monthly themes to guide content, educators had access to links and resources including educational opportunities with Mo Willems, Hamilton, Carnegie Hall Music Explorers, National Women’s History Museum and Learning for Justice.

Sarah Phelps, a music educator at Badger Elementary in Appleton, said “It was nice to have opportunities to share with my students through a wide variety of platforms and that they were so exciting and engaging.”

Phelps’ 5th and 6th graders watched Black Violin perform and talk about how they encourage students to defy stereotypes and to dream bigger. Her third graders used The Science of Sound offering to connect their music and science lessons, demonstrating the ways the arts connect in all aspects of our lives in a way that was meaningful to them.

“The Amcor Education Series has a long history of educating and inspiring students and providing educators with resources that enhance classroom lessons. While we usually welcome thousands of students to our building each year, we were thrilled to be able to adjust to bringing the theater to them, wherever they were learning,” said Chief Programming Officer Amy Gosz. “The Center provided several virtual opportunities that helped educate and inspire through

the arts as well as resources for parents and educators. Each opportunity was offered free of charge, thanks to the generosity of our partners and supporters of the Act 2 Fund.”

Virtual Teachers’ Lounges connect educators, provide arts education Newly added to provide educators a chance to connect, engage and learn from one another, monthly Virtual Teachers’ Lounge events welcomed educators to join a Zoom call to share resources, exchange ideas and most importantly, support one another in a challenging year. Each month, educators addressed different topics and welcomed guests like New York actor and teaching artist Joshua Kane, Sonja Rusch from the Appleton Public Library, illusionist Bill Blagg and artist manager Simon Shaw to share arts-integrated activities

Center Stage High School Musical Theater Program celebrates 5th Anniversary virtually The Center Stage High School Musical Theater Program celebrated its 5th Anniversary in a unique year that continued to focus on developing confidence, creativity and collaboration among high school students despite a challenging landscape.

A record number of 24 high schools from throughout Northeast Wisconsin participated in the virtual programming that provided unique opportunities to engage with Broadway actors, industry leaders and local artists, highlighting different aspects of

the arts industry and welcoming exploration of a variety of disciplines.

With a little creativity, participating high schools found ways for their students to provide theater experiences in both traditional and nontraditional formats.

With streaming, hybrid and even outdoor performances, they showed a true dedication to sharing the arts in their communities.

Arts experts representing the Center Stage Program provided educational feedback to directors and applauded the efforts of each school as they weathered the continuing challenge and change the year brought to theater programs.

The program culminated with a Virtual Showcase presented in partnership with WFRV – Channel 5 that highlighted the resilience and incredible successes found in local high school theater programs and the way the arts brought each school and their communities together throughout the year.

The Showcase awarded two scholarships to graduating seniors, recognized outstanding educators and named three students to represent the program at the virtual National High School Musical Theatre Program/The Jimmy Awards®. Mickey Wirtz (Pulaski High School) participated after being recognized for Outstanding Performance by a Leading Actor, Lauren Meyer (St. Mary Catholic High School) participated after being recognized for Outstanding Performance by a Leading Actress and Lindsey Seaquist (Pulaski High School) represented the Center Stage Student Ambassador Program by serving as a Student Reporter.

O E S N E S A G N I D N I S F T R A E H T H G U O R TH In a time where social distancing was the norm, it became difficult to feel connected with the community in which we belong.

That’s why the Center worked with community muralist Irineo Medina to bring that sense of belonging to the Fox Cities P.A.C. Through eight unique pieces, Medina was inspired by the feedback of local students to explore how the arts create a sense of togetherness and belonging. The final mural was painted live outside the Fox Cities P.A.C. in August 2020 as a reaction piece to a playlist of songs based on community.

“When I think about the projects I did for the P.A.C. I think about the intersection that occurs here. I think about how there’s people from different communities that can interact, talk and conversate where otherwise they might not get to,” Medina said.

Exploring Hmong heritage and culture In May of 2021, the Center joined other organizations and the City of Appleton in recognizing Hmong Heritage Month to highlight and celebrate Hmong stories and culture within the community.

Community Chords: Engagement through Music and Art was presented by Appleton Public Library. Funded by a WiLS Ideas to Action Fund Grant, the project featured five pianos designed by local artists to highlight Hmong narratives. The Fox Cities P.A.C. hosted a piano designed by Ben Vehrs and Rosa Jimez. Their piece, titled “Living Stripes” explored Hmong culture from a Western and global viewpoint and featured paper strips

– each different individually but together showing a solidarity of purpose and inspired by the multi-faceted fabric of Hmong culture.

“We hope our artistic vision honors the Hmong people while offering people a way to musically celebrate all cultures,” their artists’ statement read.

The Fox Cities P.A.C. added to the vibrancy of the celebration by commissioning a mural

by Hmong artist Nou Vue who spent four days painting the large public art piece along the windows of the Center’s lobby facing College Avenue. Made possible by a grant from U.S. Venture Schmidt Family Foundation and paint donated by Sherwin-Williams, the piece showcased the sewing mastery and storytelling that had been passed down from generation to generation.

“I think the diversity of this area will only continue to grow so learning and celebrating Hmong and other cultures only allows the community to become even more inclusive,” said Nou Vue. In partnership with Appleton Downtown, Inc. the Center also displayed Hmong Needlework provided by Maiyoua Thao.

Make Music Day brings people and culture together Every year, June 21 brings together more than 1,000 cities in more than 120 countries to celebrate the ways music moves us with Make Music Day. This season, the Fox Cities P.A.C. joined in the celebration to engage the community with a mix of virtual and outdoor, in-person events that helped people of all ages and backgrounds experience the joy of music. The day began with a free concert in Houdini Plaza featuring members of IndUS of the Fox Valley, an organization dedicated to promoting Indo-American friendship and goodwill by serving the community through social, cultural, educational and charitable activities. The group performed a mix of Bollywood, popular folk and classical instrumental music. The event was also streamed on social media and included explanations of the cultural significance of each piece as well as participatory opportunities for the audience.

“Culture means a lot to any community and for people who migrated from India to live here and call the Fox Valley their home, we like to share our culture. And this is one way of sharing our culture, dance, and music, we really enjoy it,” said Sridhar, who is active with IndUS of the Fox Valley and participated in Make Music Day. Later that day, the Fox Cities P.A.C. and IndUS of the Fox Valley teamed up with Building for Kids to present an interactive workshop creating bell anklets (called Ghungroos or Salangai in Indian music) and discussing the role they play in traditional Indian dance.

Then dancers with IndUS, along with live musicians, demonstrated the classical forms of Indian dance Bharatanatyam and Odissi, inviting participants to join them.

“IndUS presented attendees with a variety of instruments to learn about firsthand.

Families seemed eager to create their anklets and get the chance to see how wearing them enhanced the dancers’ movements,” said Beth Vanderloop, a workshop volunteer and Director of Programs & Community Engagement at The Building for Kids.

“They also demonstrated traditional Indian dances and provided the stories behind the dances. Many stayed to ask questions and overall seemed grateful for the opportunity to connect in a way that was safe and inclusive.”

The evening wrapped up with a virtual performance streamed live from Rock Garden Studio with equipment from The Heist featuring Feed the Dog. This local band provided entertainment for people to enjoy from their own devices and share in the joy and inspiration of the live performing arts.

The Show Must Go On Show keeps patrons connected The Show Must Go On Show, a digital series created in the early days of the Center’s closure to connect with the community and local and national industry leaders, continued in the 2020-21 Season with inspirational and engaging discussions. By the end of its more than 50 episodes, Fox Cities P.A.C. President and CEO Maria Van Laanen had connected with artists, community leaders, industry professionals and students to discuss everything from social justice to special events and how the arts were providing hope and inspiration in a trying time.

As the 2020-21 Season began, there were high hopes that fall, or even early winter, would provide the opportunity to return to the theater. However those hopes were outweighed by rising COVID numbers so a small staff returned to remote work as the building was prepared for an extended intermission.

When the early closure meant a significant loss of earned revenue, the Center focused on reducing $2.5 million of overall operating expenses during the 2020-21 Season. With a commitment to the mission of sharing educational and engaging arts experiences, the Center shifted to virtual delivery of its programs – providing inspiration to the community at a time when it was needed the most. From March 2020 until the building reopened in the fall of 2021, $5.89 million was spent on creating and implementing virtual arts programming for students and the community, annual building maintenance and additional COVID-19 related updates, transitioning a core staff to a remote work structure to help in preparing to safely welcome audiences back to the Center.

The community rallied around the Center to help address this gap through the Act 2 Fund.

Some of the costs were recouped through federal, state and local programs, two grants from the State of Wisconsin, grant funding from Arts Midwest, the Wisconsin Arts Board and the National Endowment for the Arts, a grant from the Fox Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau and several grants from the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region.

Individuals and businesses also came together to ensure the virtual show could go on, supporting the Act 2 Fund through gifts of all sizes to help address the ongoing need as the Center worked toward reopening its doors and generating earned revenue. By the end of the 2020-21 Season, the combination of these donations helped the Center come within $500,000 of fully covering the expenses incurred during the initial stage of the pandemic.

Dr. John Mielke February 3, 1933 - November 4, 2020 Dr. John Mielke was a believer in providing quality educational opportunities and saw the critical role arts experiences played in crafting a well-rounded education. As a trustee and strong advocate and supporter of Center programs, the Mielke family helped inspire and educate generations of students and families through the arts. Our Family First Nights® program was made possible by John and his wife Sally’s generosity. He leaves an amazing legacy here in the Fox Cities and beyond, and will be deeply missed by many including us here at the Fox Cities P.A.C.
