Twent y-t wo years ago, when someone first suggested we launch Best of Texarkana™, I smiled politely and internally panicked. You want me to publish a list declaring certain people and businesses “the best”? In Texarkana? Where everybody knows everybody? I have built Four States Living on celebrating community, not stirring the pot. But sometimes the thing you’re most hesitant about is the very thing that grows beyond you. Best of Texarkana™ has never been about my opinion. That’s important. I don’t pick the winners. My staff doesn’t pick the winners. We don’t even get to vote. We only choose the categories. After that, it belongs to you. One vote per device per day. Careful monitoring. Smart technology guards the gates, so no one’s cousin can vote 400 times. We have learned a few things in 22 years. Some businesses rally their customers like it’s a hometown championship game. They post on social media, send emails, and remind you to vote at the checkout. Others stay quiet, go about their business, and still rise to the top. After hosting this contest for 22 years, here’s what I’ve come to understand: it’s not about excluding anyone. It’s about spotlighting excellence. One of my favorite parts each year is seeing that mix of fresh faces alongside legacy names. That’s something powerful about Texarkana: we make room for growth without forgetting who paved the way. If you voted, thank you. If you campaigned, well done. If you won, congratulations! If you didn’t win this year, keep showing up and doing excellent work. Earning a nomination is no small thing. After 22 years, I can admit something: I was wrong to worry. Best of Texarkana™ hasn’t divided us. It has energized us. It gives us a reason to cheer for each other. It shines a light on the businesses and individuals who make our corner of the world vibrant and thriving. It reminds us that local matters. Texarkana, these are the businesses you voted best.
