ON THE COVER - MAY 2021
The 2021 Tribute to Women honorees have all made a significant impact on the lives of others. Each woman featured in this issue was chosen by an honoree from last year’s Tribute to Women to be recognized for their extraordinary contributions to the Texarkana community. Whether an educator, friend, nurse, entrepreneur, or volunteer, these women have climbed the ladder of success, and FSLM thanks them for their service to others.

The Way I See It...
PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Robin Rogers, Ed.D.
Necessity is the mother of invention.
Thirteen years ago, we at FSLM began our annual Tribute to Women issue to fill a void: the local YWCA had presented awards of the same name for many years, and, upon that organization’s shuttering, we wanted to continue the legacy. And, on a personal level, I needed to tell the stories of the strong women around me—the family members, friends, and mentors whose womanhood wasn’t incidental but rather essential to their specific brands of heroism. I needed a space to honor the best of womanhood, so I created it.
Let me rephrase that—we created it. Rugged individualism has no place on our all-women team. Our company culture is built on celebrating one another, sharing credit, and putting the group before the individual. Despite popular misconception, women are not “catty” by default; on the contrary, most of the women who have worked at FSLM have been generous, self-sacrificing, upstanding people.
I must say, I’m particularly proud of our current team. Suzy Turner has been editing this publication for 19 years. Through thick and thin, she has shown unwavering loyalty to our team, representing the magazine with compassion and diligence. I will always be grateful to her. When graphic designer Kim McMurry came onboard in 2019, I felt as if I could exhale for the first time in months; her creativity, work ethic, and steady kindness brought me deep comfort then, and they continue to help keep our ship afloat. Lori Rochelle, head sales representative, seemingly knows— and genuinely cares about—every person in this town.

INSPIRE THE PESSIMIST ELEVATE THE OPTIMIST STIR THE MIND ENTERTAIN THE SOUL
Her charisma, integrity, and contagiously joyful spirit have made the challenges of this last year bearable— sometimes even fun.
I don’t know about y’all, but for me, every bit of fun I’ve experienced during the pandemic has been invaluable. I’m fortunate to live with my daughter Emily, who waits for me to watch new episodes of “The Voice” and even cheerfully does yard work with me. (The other day, when she saw that the temperature would drop below freezing that night, she insisted we cover the flower beds with tablecloths and blankets; after all of her hard work, she was rightfully invested.) Even on the most grueling days, an impromptu dance party with her can put a smile on my face.
I’ve also really cherished a weekly custom that’s been consistent for over a year now: every Wednesday night, I log onto Zoom to play virtual Spades with my eldest daughter, her oldest friend, and my mother. We laugh and smack talk for two hours and then say goodbye with kisses blown through webcams and across hundreds of miles. More often than not, we’re showing up tired, after long days of working and taking care of others—and there is always more work to be done after the game. But we show up anyway, gratefully, as a way to care for ourselves and for each other.
It’s no secret that COVID has disproportionately affected women. Of course, we are all in the same storm, regardless of gender, but, as it’s been said by many, we are all in different boats. Consider the landscape of such women-dominated fields as elementary education and nursing over the last year. Think of all of the moms

you know who are employed full-time, homeschooling, taking care of the home, and regularly checking on her neighbors. It’s mission-critical that we continue to take care of ourselves and each other. With vaccines here, the finish line is in sight, but we still need to pace ourselves if we’re going to finish this marathon strong.
Personally, I’m grateful for the ways I’m again able to care for myself that weren’t safely available to me mere months ago; I never could have imagined such longing for a haircut and manicure. Even more, I feel unbelievably blessed by the members of my community who consistently care for me and others. I realized the other day how odd it is that, while the verb “to father” means “to create,” while we typically use “mothering” synonymously with “caring for.” It seems to me that we live in a society that typically values “fathering” (planting, producing, inventing) over “mothering” (sustaining, nurturing, tending). Now more than ever, I find myself hyper-focused on the “mothers” in my life— people of all genders, with and without offspring, who prioritize caretaking. Who fill their own cups so they can pour into others’. Who cover the plants in preparation for the unseasonable freeze.
In the 13 years of FSLM’s Tribute to Women, there has never been a time more appropriate to thank and celebrate our community’s women.
We have some amazing honorees who are more than deserving of this annual honor; I hope you enjoy reading about them as much as I did.
Lift up your mothers this month, as they need it every month. And as always, thanks for reading FSLM.

La Verne Johnson Baptiste
Generous in spirit, La Verne Johnson Baptiste provides selfless service to those who need it most. Blessing others just comes naturally for this retired educator and soon-to-be-published children’s book author. Texarkana is fortunate to have this generous lady as one of its citizens who helps make this town a great place to live and work.
Always one to help out when needed, La Verne Johnson Baptiste believes that she is “one of God’s gifts to the world” because she strives to be available to help others in their time of need. The epitome of a true “giver,” La Verne serves as a valuable influencer who exudes kindness, compassion, and grace.
Teaching Vacation Bible School and donating to charities are two of the ways La Verne enjoys spending her time helping others. However, she also appreciates a little bit of “me time” periodically, and can often be found reading, working puzzles, traveling the world, raising money for her university, Prairie View A&M University, or her church, Hopewell Temple CME Church. And it is no surprise that she tutors young adults about life, career choices, and finances and frequently checks in on local senior citizens, leaving essential items or just little fun surprises at their doors for them to enjoy.
The first person in her family to graduate from college with a degree, La Verne obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English and Spanish from Prairie View A&M. Attaining this personal goal is one in which she is very proud.
While working as an educator, La Verne helped touch the future by teaching many forthcoming leaders. If she was asked to share advice with youngsters today, she would tell them that the world is very diverse, structured in technology and fast-paced, so they should advance their talents to the best of their abilities.
La Verne acknowledges that many people have influenced her during the course of her life, including her mother and her teachers. “My teachers were great influences in my life, encouraging me to stay the course and get a college degree. My late mother, Mrs. Emma Richardson Johnson, taught her children well. She encouraged us to respect family, adults, rules of the home, and society,” she says. “She sent us to church every Sunday and demanded that we attend school every day. We were taught to be responsible, to grow up and get a job, and to be productive citizens in our society.”

THE WAY Dr. Ruth Blackwell SEES HER
We make our lives by what we get. We make our lives by what we give. La Verne Johnson Baptiste makes her life by what she gives as a selfless woman.
Our connection began when we were neighbors. My daughter, Shirley, and La Verne were classmates at Sunset Elementary School in the 5th grade.
As a Texarkana entrepreneur and active member of the community, La Verne utilizes her time through volunteer services, one of which is mentoring young people in writing and public speaking. Along with investing in real estate, she also donates generously to college scholarship funds through her church, Hopewell Temple CME Church. Whether holidays, birthdays, or times of hardship, La Verne makes it a point to provide for the elderly. Thanks to her efforts, I and other seniors were sought after during the pandemic.
La Verne is a wonderful contributor to the community in which she lives, and I watched her grow into the lady she has become today. It is a blessing to have her lifelong friendship. I am honored to submit La Verne Johnson Baptiste as a Tribute to Women honoree.
La Verne attended a birthday party for a classmate at Entertainment Central in 2016.

Wendy Harman
As the Human Resource Department/ Onboarding Coordinator at HealthCARE Express, Wendy Harman admits that passing the Professional of Human Resources exam is without a doubt her greatest professional accomplishment. Similar to an attorney passing the bar or an accountant passing the CPA exam, attaining the PHR certification is no easy feat.
Although being a career woman is important to Wendy Harman, the title that makes her the most proud is the one of “mom.” At 24 weeks pregnant, Wendy and Justin’s son, Kutter Lane “Lil Tin Man,” was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. In short, the left side of his heart did not develop. “The idea of a baby being born with half a heart seemed too impossible and radical to comprehend. Watching your newborn go through two open heart surgeries (111 days in the hospital) and then a third surgery at 3 years old changes a person,” Wendy admits. “It changes your view of the world and what you thought to be true five years ago. Seeing him now, running around with his friends playing, jumping, and laughing is an absolute miracle. Every second that I get to spend with my son is a second to make the most of ... being a heart mom is not for everyone.” Needless to say, advocating for Kutter is Wendy’s #1 goal in life and just comes naturally to her.
Most certainly, Wendy’s mother, Aggie Butler, has been her biggest influencer. “She always roots for the underdog, thinks everyone is hungry, and does everything in her power to make the world a fair place,” Wendy acknowledges. “She is the hardest working and most humble woman I know. Even when I was a kid and would have friends come over, she felt like feeding them was the first thing on the agenda. Today, she still sends everyone home with a doggie bag.”
When she isn’t at work or at home with her family, Wendy can often be found serving others in the community. She is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Texarkana, Twin Cities Toastmasters, Junior League of Texarkana, Texarkana Chamber Ambassadors, Dancers Against Cancer, Junior Achievement, TriState SHRM, and HandsOn Texarkana. She also encourages young women who are struggling with day-to-day stresses. “Being forgiving and being a doormat are two totally different things,” she advises. “Forgive as often as you can but don’t forgive the same person for doing the same thing multiple times. Draw a line for yourself, and then stand up to it.”

THE WAY Carmen Engledowl SEES HER
Wendy is the most selfless person I know. She is a full-time business woman, mother, wife, and community volunteer. Her son was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome which has meant lots of hospital visits, feeding pumps, injections, special diets, tracking everything, etc. Wendy has handled all of that “extra stuff” in addition to the “normal mom stuff” with strength and grace. Her son is a happy, talkative, tractor-loving, country boy who will surely grow up to do something amazing because of her parenting.
Wendy always looks for ways to create magic in other people’s lives. She regularly volunteers in the community and does fundraising for special organizations. She still finds time to cook and share with her neighbors, write books, and hit the gym every day. She is generous, has a spirit of servitude, and is an ongoing inspiration to me.

Bobbie McKinney
Retired teacher and diagnostician
Bobbie McKinney has dedicated many years to the field of education. She worked for Texarkana Independent School District as a teacher of the learning disabled for 13 years and as a professional educational diagnostician for 24 years. She also taught school for two years in the Killeen Independent School District.
Trustworthy, loyal, and meticulous are words often used to describe Bobbie McKinney. She is a true blessing to her family and friends, always there to lend a hand anytime she is needed. Her enthusiastic demeanor is evident in all that she does, and her extracurricular activities are numerous. Bobbie is a member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association District 8 and the Texas Registry Board of Professional Educational Diagnosticians. She serves as a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and life member of Piney Grove Baptist Church where she serves as youth director, Bible teacher, music ministry member, finance secretary, and member of the outreach missions team.
Professionally, Bobbie has spent many hours honing her craft after obtaining a solid education. She received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and Special Education (all levels) from Texas Woman’s University and a Master of Education in Educational Diagnostician with a specialty in Learning Disabilities from Texas A&M University-Texarkana. Passing the Texas Registry Board Professional Educational Diagnostician exam is perhaps her greatest professional accomplishment to date.
Spending time with family is important to Bobbie. She is married to Will, a retired electronic integrated systems mechanic from Red River Army Depot, and she has two stepdaughters, Tomiko McKinney and Tonjuana McKinney. Not one to give up on her dreams, no matter how large or small, learning to play the piano at the age of 55 is a personal accomplishment that Bobbie holds near and dear to her heart. In her spare time, she enjoys attending Bible study and Bible Study Fellowship (BSF), singing, learning to play new songs, baking new and different desserts, and watching Hallmark movies.
Over the course of her life, Bobbie’s relationship with Jesus Christ has kept her grounded. She acknowledges that three role models have positively served as mentors to her throughout her life: her mother, Margie Banks; her junior class Sunday School teacher, Genetta Banks; and her high school Algebra I and II, trigonometry and chemistry teacher, Robert Mathis.
As a teacher, Bobbie has often shared inspiring pieces of advice with her students. “I encouraged them to always be accountable and take responsibility for their choices.” Today, if she had to share one piece of advice with young women, she would say, “Seek your identity in Christ, and His spirit will guide you in all of your relationships and endeavors.”

THE WAY Shirley Bradford SEES HER
I met Bobbie McKinney over 25 years ago at church. She’s a very energetic, loving, caring person that is very friendly and extremely organized. She has a heart for God, family, and children. Active in her community and church, she loves ministering to children. She even bought a larger vehicle to pick up children for church so they would have a spiritual foundation even though she had no children of her own. That carried on to her occupation where she was an educator for over 30 years.
Bobbie impacted my life as a very good friend and encourager with lots of laughter. We’ve shared so many things over the years ... church, Gospel workshops, singing, piano lessons, and Bible Study Fellowship. She is a very good friend to me in spiritual matters and everyday life. I’m thankful to call her a friend because she is a joy to be around and shares her joys (as well as her struggles) openly.
Bobbie is a committed family person and helps in any possible way caring for her disabled husband. I’m honored to nominate Bobbie for Tribute to Women 2021.

Dr.MooreSheila
A small town girl who loves God, her husband, family, and friends, Dr. Sheila M. Moore serves as an assistant professor of nursing at Texas A&M University-Texarkana. She has been married to her husband, Roger, for 36 years, and they have twin daughters, Brooke Moore Cobb (married to Chase) and Carmen Moore Sampson (married to Gary), and a son, Brent Moore. Sheila’s grandchildren, Steven Sampson, Austin Sampson, Summer Cobb, Grace Griffin, Carly Griffin, Austin Cobb, and great-grandson, Blake Sampson, are the apples of this Nana’s eyes.
Aregistered nurse for 27 years, Dr. Sheila Moore worked in Texarkana for many years before going back to college to obtain her master’s degree and then a doctoral degree. “These degrees allowed me to share my love of nursing and patients with nursing students over the past 12 years, both in the classroom and in the clinical setting,” she explains.
Raising three wonderful children to adulthood is Sheila’s greatest accomplishment. Watching them grow and mature into wonderful, caring, giving individuals who love the Lord and other people makes her heart swell with pride.
“I think my proudest professional achievement is earning a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree at almost 52 years of age,” Sheila says. “It just goes to show that one is never too old to learn and grow professionally.” Sheila considers herself blessed to be able to work in a profession that continues to challenge and stimulate her to care for and love others.
Since domestic violence prevention is a passion of Sheila’s, she has been involved with the Toy Bradshaw Memorial Golf Tournament for several years and never misses an opportunity to share the story of Toy’s life. She explains, “Having personally known and worked with Toy for years, I am acutely aware of the physical and mental devastation from which the victims and their loved ones suffer as a result of domestic violence.”
Over the years, many people have inspired Sheila and challenged her to be all that she can be. If she had to choose just one, she would pick her grandmother, Alice Phillips Bizzell. “Although she died when I was a child, her influence on my mom and those around her taught me to be a strong, independent woman who is not afraid to challenge the system, stand up for the underdog, and fight for what is right,” she acknowledges. “Although my grandmother was small in stature, she more than made up for that in her faith, her tenaciousness, and her sense of right and wrong.”
Sheila loves the peace and tranquility that living in the country affords. When she isn’t working at the college, she enjoys spending time at the farm with Roger, their family, and their animals.
Love yourself, believe in yourself, work hard for what you want, love others as yourself, and love the Lord your God with all of your heart, soul, and might is Sheila’s greatest piece of advice for young women. She knows firsthand that when your faith is strong and your heart is in the right place, He will bless you and provide for you.

FUN FACTS
What is something unique about you that most people would not know?
“I never graduated from high school. I actually got my GED.”
If you could have dinner with one person, famous or not, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would it be?
“I would love to have dinner with Cory Ten Boom. Her life and her faith is a wonderful example of triumph out of tragedy.”
What music do you listen to in your vehicle?
“I split my listening between contemporary Christian music, ’70s on 7, and Willie’s Roadhouse on XM Radio. It all depends on my mood and thoughts.”
What did you imagine yourself being when you were growing up?
“As a young child, I couldn’t decide if I wanted to be a nurse or a hairstylist. After having a child with a congenital heart defect, the desire to become a nurse was renewed with vigor.”
What is the last gift you gave someone?
“I bought my husband a new pair of boots.”
What is your favorite meal that you order regularly at a local establishment?
“Since I am married to the grill master who cooks the best steak around, we don’t eat out much. But when we do, we can usually be found at one of three local Mexican restaurants – Maria’s in New Boston, Amigo Juan in Texarkana, or Loca Luna in Texarkana. I love Mexican food!”
If there was a movie produced about your life, which actress would portray you?
“That’s a hard one. I’ve always thought I’d like Sally Fields to portray me, but she is so tiny and cute. So maybe Melissa McCarthy or Kathy Bates would be a more logical choice. They are both great actresses and could make me look more interesting than I really am.””
"This is the day the Lord hath made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.”

THE WAY Dr. Healther McKnight SEES HER
Looking back over the 20+ years that I have learned from Dr. Sheila Moore has been a fulfilling reflection. My choice to pursue the profession of nursing stemmed from seeing her dedication to patients and families. The depth of compassion and caring she exhibited with every phone call and interaction has been awe-inspiring. There was no denying her calling to be a nurse, and I am grateful to have joined her in the profession of nursing.
Sheila has been a constant throughout my nursing career, which has meant serving as cheerleader/accountability partner during school, a shoulder to cry on with my first patient death, and my right hand in my current role as Director of Nursing at A&M-Texarkana. Sheila has an exceptional ability to discuss and identify multiple solutions to issues and concerns. She steps back and approaches each challenge from a holistic perspective. This gift has allowed for growth and maturation for the both of us each year.
Ultimately, the friendship that has resulted from our introduction in 1999 has been the most precious gift. I would not be the woman I am today without all the lessons, tears, laughter, and experiences shared with Sheila. She prefers to stay in the shadows, so I am pushing her into the light by spotlighting her in this year’s Tribute to Women.
Sheila caught this fish while fishing with her husband, Roger, on Millwood Lake. She admits that they had a great time but didn’t come home with any fish because Roger is a “catch and release fisherman.”

Bertie Norton
A retired educator of 40 years, Bertie Norton and her husband, Jerry, have been married for 60 years. A closeknit family, Bertie considers herself “blessed” that both of her sons, Scott and Barry (married to Sheri), live here in Texarkana. Bertie and Jerry also have three grandchildren, Olivia Claire Morris (married to Scott), Clete Norton, and Abby Elizabeth Norton, and one great-grandchild on the way.
“From the beginning of my long career, it was evident that God had a special plan for me,” explains Bertie Norton. “It was not the direction I ever dreamed of, but it was a perfect plan. No one has had a better and more rewarding career than me.” For approximately 14 years, Bertie gained valuable experience while working at Opportunities, Inc., Red Lick ISD, and Hooks Elementary School. She then worked as an educational diagnostician for Western Bowie County Cooperative, then returned to Red Lick ISD, and served as principal until she retired in 2003. That same year, TISD hired Bertie as a consultant and new teacher mentor. That decision led her to another principal position at Nash Elementary School. After retiring from Nash, she continued working for TISD as a consultant and then again, accepted a principal position at Spring Lake Park for two years before retiring again.
Making the decision to become a teacher led to amazing opportunities and opened more doors than Bertie ever dreamed possible. She explains, “Not only did I grow professionally, but I was surrounded by and worked with some of the most amazing administrators, teachers, and children. Education of children became my ministry in life, and I knew that God’s hand was in every move that I made. I also believe that working with children has kept me young at heart.”
In every aspect of life, Bertie counts her many blessings. A strong Christian, she has a wonderful family, amazing friends and coworkers, and a successful career which allowed her to work with children. Since retirement, she has enjoyed participating in church activities and Bible study, being a spectator of area sports (especially since both of her sons coach), working in her yard, and having lunch with friends.
Bertie’s mother, Flora Mason, was an enormous influence on her, demonstrating not only a love of people, but a work ethic unlike any Bertie had ever known. She believed strongly in loyalty to her employer and in working diligently at any task. Several outstanding leaders have influenced Bertie to be a better person and a better leader, including Dr. Richard Hervey, Dr. Kathy Allen, Dr. Larry Sullivan, and Dr. James Henry Russell.
Today, if she had to share any advice with youngsters, she would share the same thoughts that she has given to others in the past: “Be strong, independent, hardworking, and follow God’s lead. His plans for our lives are always perfect. Become known and recognized as a person with a great work ethic and high standards. Success and happiness will follow.”

THE WAY Debbie Norton SEES HER
“Ms. N” has been my friend, coworker, and confidant for almost 50 years. She’s brilliant, professional, a whole lot of fun, and has been there for me from crisis to celebration. We’ve planned and plotted to ensure the success of students that couldn’t seem to find their way and found money for programs when the educational coffers were dry.
A miracle worker, a healer of the hearts and minds of little children, and a forever advocate for their safety and well-being ... I am honored and downright thrilled to nominate Bertie Norton for Four States Living Magazine’s 2021 Tribute to Women!

Mindy Preston
Kind and considerate, Mindy Preston’s goal in life is to encourage others. She is able to carry out this personal mission while working at Texarkana College and while managing her decorating side hustle. As the Executive Director of Board and Presidential Activities and Events at Texarkana College, Mindy supports others while working as a team to build a culture of student success. As a decorator, Mindy celebrates others by assisting in the coordination, decoration, and preparation of their special events.
With a smile on her face, Mindy Preston seamlessly carries out her roles as a wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, Sunday school teacher, and career woman. “I am thankful that the Lord blessed me with wonderful people in my life,” she says.
“My job typically involves working closely with TC President, Dr. Jason Smith, and the Texarkana College Board of Trustees,” Mindy says. “I assist with the planning, preparation, and coordinating of campus and community events in which Texarkana College is involved.” These events include but are not limited to: the annual Texarkana Chamber of Commerce Banquet, Twin City Title Christmas Party, Texarkana College Betty and Buddy Ledwell Building Dedication, Texarkana College’s Annual Christmas Party and Drive-Through Lights Display, and various other community events.

Hanging out with her grandsons makes Mindy happy. “Whether going to the zoo, attending a sporting event, or just hanging out at the house, we always have a great time with them,” she admits.
Decorating for others allows Mindy to “zone out” and really tap into her gift and desire to celebrate others. “People often ask what my ‘process’ is or how I decide how to decorate, but I don’t have a specific set of steps that I follow,” she describes. “Each occasion, event, and person is special.” She enjoys helping her friends and family decorate their homes for various holidays and special occasions.
Mindy’s parents, Nan and Mitchell Meyers, have been positive role models to her. An amazing Christian couple, they led by example with their hard work ethic, the way they treated people fair and kindly, and also their love for one another. A hardworker, provider, father, and grandfather, Mindy’s husband, Kyle, has also influenced her in a variety of ways. She explains, “Kyle has a strong heart and fights for whatever he believes in. He has always supported me in whatever I’ve done.”
Mindy believes that when people work in their passion, they find their purpose. Her advice to others would be to surround yourself with good people, mentors, and strong leaders who create opportunities for people around them to become leaders themselves. She concludes, “Every person is special, unique, and chosen. No matter where you work or what position you are in, you can make a difference to everyone. Acknowledge the gifts and strengths of each person, and always allow them to grow. ”

THE WAY Amanda Graham SEES HER
The first time I met Mindy, she welcomed me with open arms, igniting a friendship that would last for years. Praying consistently for friends and strangers alike, sharing kindness with anyone she meets, and focusing on the Lord above all else, Mindy is the epitome of Christian love and compassion. The genuine, southern sentiment in her heart comes across when she speaks. Whether through seemingly “simple” but well-planned gifts, words of support in the ups and downs, or a compliment on your hair or outfit of the day, she makes every person feel special, loved, and accepted. Constantly working to make life better for her family, friends, and coworkers, she certainly goes the extra mile to ensure everyone is cared for before herself. Living with great responsibility at home and work, she always provides a sense of warmth and hospitality to any event, gathering, or team.
Mindy’s gift of decorating speaks for itself, shaping simple pieces of fabric, boxes, bins, and pictures into beautiful masterpieces, each as unique and alluring as the last. Signs that a family meeting may be overdue:
If an elder is experiencing frequent falls, increased confusion or signs of loneliness; it’s time to build a plan. Involve your physician to understand contributing medical issues and be willing to discuss the state of their emotional well-being as well. Remember, when we see an elder suffering, we fail them when we look the other way. Don’t forget that the elder deserves a seat at the table to preserve their autonomy and voice in this discussion. A family meeting may not be easy, but doing the right thing rarely is. Don’t look the other way; it’s time to start talking.

Karen Reavis
Karen Reavis strives to always be an encourager. An active wife, mother, and friend, she is married to David, and they have a son, Tim, and a daughter, Julie Larsen. Tim lives in Little Rock, Arkansas, and is married to Allison. They have two children, Milo (6) and Mabel (4). Karen and David’s daughter, Julie, and her husband, Brian, live in Waunakee, Wisconsin. They have three children, Noah (7), Jeremy (6), and Ruby (2). Karen admits that watching her two children become really great adults, marrying great spouses, and giving her and David five wonderful grandchildren blesses her immensely.
Although Karen Reavis has had many occupations, she admits that she has two favorites. For 12 years, she was the co-owner of Texarkana Embroidery & Graphics with her friend, Peggy Speer. She has been retired from that business for six years. Currently, Karen enjoys her antique business, The Pickin’ Patch. “I set up at out-of-town shows and take all my goods to sell,” she admits. “I love digging in old barns and buildings! You never know what you’ll find!”
Karen’s proudest professional accomplishment was opening up Texarkana Embroidery & Graphics with each partner only contributing $500 and a 16 needle embroidery machine. The business grew exponentially and was very successful. She was able to make lifelong friends during those years, and she would “totally do it again.”
Shop with a Cop, First Choice Pregnancy Center, and 6K4Water are three nonprofit organizations that Karen enjoys supporting. Her best pieces of advice for other young women include: don’t get caught up or be consumed with what you don’t have; look around you and enjoy your blessings; and find a wonderful Godly older woman for a friend. “I think we all need someone wiser than us in our lives!” she remarks.
Karen’s mother, Carol Turley, has served as the greatest influencer in her life. “I have watched her go through some hard life obstacles, and I have seen her live life with such thankfulness,” she explains. “She is wise and prays daily for her family. I love her for doing this.”
There are two things that Karen enjoys doing to pass the time. She jokes that one of the things she loves doing is sitting on the back porch with David in the mornings while drinking coffee and talking about the same things they talked about the day before! As with most grandmothers, the second thing that Karen enjoys is being anywhere with all of her grands! She concludes, “They are just so much fun!”

THE WAY Paula McGuire SEES HER
Karen is a dear friend whom I admire for so many reasons. I have known her for over 10 years and have seen her walk through various seasons. Since I have known her, she has gone from empty-nester to selling a business she helped build, to becoming a grandparent, to starting a business that allows her to enjoy what she does as she travels to Little Rock to Wisconsin to be actively present for her adult children and growing grandchildren. She is an encourager and has a heart for women of all ages. She is a prayer warrior and passionately loves the Lord. I appreciate her and how she prioritizes her faith with her family while still having a business that she fits into the juggle. She is a woman that loves life and the people in her life well.

Heather RichardsonGreen
A hairstylist, nail tech, and lash extension artist by trade, Heather Richardson-Green is most proud of the mother she has become and the young men that she has raised with manners, respect, and good hearts. Married to Adrian, the Greens have five “awesome kiddos,” Austin, Jordan, Desmond, Jay, and Jagger.
Apeople person who always has a smile on her face, Heather Richardson-Green loves building her clientele. She never meets a stranger and makes each and every person who walks into Tranquility Day Spa and Salon feel like she has known them forever. “I have the longest standing, most loyal, wise, loving, nurturing, amazing client family,” she describes. “Most all of them have followed me to the moon and back for over a decade. I love my ladies!”
Even though she is sometimes called “Hot Mess Heather,” everyone knows they can depend on Heather to get her job done ... and done well. When asked to describe herself, she jokes, “I am a fun, music-loving, God-fearing and -loving ‘Positive Patty,’ who is a loud know-it-all.” Those who know her personally would definitely agree with the first part of her description, but probably not the last part. She loves people and pours positive vibes into every person she is around, making her clients feel like a million bucks. She adds, “I just love people and what I do.”
Although her life as a mother to Austin, Jordan, Desmond, Jay and Jagger, and wife to Adrian takes up most of her time, Heather also tries to give back to the community by participating in back-to-school drives, often offering free haircuts and school supplies to students in need. Often during the holidays, Heather will feel God lay a family on her heart, so she rallies people together, and makes miracles happen for those in their time of need. She also donates her services during community events and nonprofit organizations’ fundraisers. She explains, “It is the daily blessings in the community that I try to focus on most. I like to build people up and try to help them in their darkest times so each day gets brighter for them.”
Heather’s best piece of advice to young women who are growing up in today’s times is to “take time to learn to love yourself and practice self-worth.” “This is the key to any healthy relationship ... whether with God, children, a man, family, or with yourself,” she admits. “Love God first, then yourself, then you can love everyone else. By doing this, you will earn and keep the love and respect you deserve. If people can’t love and respect you, then love yourself more and let them go. But whatever you do, practice self-care!”
Over the course of Heather’s life, there have been two people who have influenced her the most: God and her mother, Ellon Phillips. “Only God can be the explanation for my heart and testimony, and my heart for people,” Heather says. “My mom taught me kindness, manners, work ethic, and strength. But mostly, she showed me how to possess an unbiased heart and eyes.”

FUN FACTS
What is something unique about you that most people would not know?
“I stopped eating bologna and hot dogs at the age of 12. My grandfather was a butcher for T-Thumb. He took me to work with him on weekends where he would process meats and package them. And, well, I haven’t eaten it since.”
If you could have dinner with one person, famous or not, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would it be?
“My Gran in heaven, but my mom would have to come with me. She was her best friend and misses her so very much. We all do.”
What music do you listen to in your vehicle?
“Music feeds the soul so I listen to hype music in the morning ... and usually loud. I also love some good praise music.”
What did you imagine yourself being when you were growing up?
“A nurse or psychiatrist. Some days in my career, I think I’m a close fit for it!”
What is the last gift you gave someone?
“I gave my mother-in-love a key chain that said, ‘Thank you for raising the man of my dreams.’ My husband really is my backbone and is so good to me and our family ... nothing but God.”
What is your favorite meal that you order regularly at a local establishment?
“If I want to indulge, I order Mother Kelly’s chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes, cabbage, hot water cornbread, and white gravy. I’m on a lifestyle change now, so I love Flying Burger’s grilled salmon and grilled squash and zucchini with a side salad.”
If there was a movie produced about your life, which actress would portray you?
“Hands down ... Melissa McCarthy. I cut up pretty well when I get going. My friends always say that they can’t take me anywhere (but they take me everywhere)!” ”
"I know for sure what we dwell on is who we become.”

THE WAY Sarah Mascoe SEES HER
Heather and I met and briefly worked together in 2010 before moving to another salon. Fast forward to 2015 when she came and joined us at Tranquility Day Spa and Salon. From that time, we clicked and quickly became the best of friends … really sisters.
Heather is one of the most selfless, caring, compassionate, and beautiful (inside and out) women that I have ever met. She is always there to lend an ear, give advice, tell a good story, make you laugh, or give you the shirt off her back if you need it. She is an intuitive, old soul that has wisdom like she has lived this life before. She truly is one of the best people I have ever had the privilege of working and being friends with. She shines so bright despite many setbacks in her life that should have destroyed her. I think those truly made her stronger and a better woman and mother than she was already. It’s not hard to look up to her. Even her “seasoned” clients love and adore her. I think it’s like therapy when they come see her, hear her stories, and tell theirs, too.
I am blessed to call Heather my friend. God knew exactly what He was doing when He crossed our paths together again. Through all the laughter and tears that we have shared, she has always been the first one to hype me up. Her confidence is contagious. I guess I could sum it up and say, “She’s aight.”

Heather’s hope is to show other women that they can have confidence, feel good about themselves, and be beautiful no matter the circumstances.

Everyone gets tired of the same old thing at some point in their lives. Refreshing perspectives can make a huge difference when trying to enhance the appearance of an older home. The owners of this 4 bedroom, 3 bath modern ranch-style house know that even the smallest of changes can make big impacts. Whether adding new paint, new furniture, or new décor, they have transformed this Pleasant Grove beauty into a charming place that they are proud to show off to their friends and family.
Strategically located on .76 acres, this sprawling 3,000 square foot home features a circular drive leading up to the entrance. Cedar beams, painted brick, and a flagstone walkway give the outside of the home a more modern touch.
King Hickory sofas from Moore’s Home Furnishings are the focal points in the living area. A coffee table, kept in the family for many years, brings together complementing design elements of glass and wood. A builtin bookcase houses the family’s mementoes. The stained wooden shelves and shiplap trim
create a rustic contrast to the white cabinet doors. Massive windows and a wrought iron chandelier allow light to invade the cozy space.
An intricate barn-style door, situated between the living area and the kitchen, was designed by the homeowner and built by Canton’s Scott Taylor. Massive and sturdy, it is made out of two doors that were originally found in a gingerbread house in Waxahachie.
The kitchen area has been completely remodeled by contractor, Dennis Salisbury. An oversized granite bar houses seating for the entire family plus a few guests. In lieu of a large dining table, the owners custom designed the built-in bar with adequate space for everyone to be together, including the cook. A copper farmhouse sink adds a rustic complement to the stainless appliances, wooden cabinets, and brick tile backsplash. A vertical plate rack turns the owners’ Fiestaware® into an eyecatching display.
A small wooden dining table sits in the breakfast nook. A large antler chandelier hangs over the table while four wooden
bamboo chairs offer seating for a casual affair.
A distressed buffet table flanks the dining table, bringing shades of blue and green to the neutral space. A coordinating print by artist Mary Jane Orr hangs above the table, bringing in the homeowner’s personal style.
Situated at the rear of the house is a new patio and outdoor living space, perfect for family game night or entertaining guests. Comfortable outdoor furniture completes the look while flowering plants and patterned pillows add pops of color. A custom wooden bar table provides a fun place to sit and watch the birds or have a cool sip of lemonade. A brushed nickel dual rotational ceiling fan hangs above the bar stools to keep visitors cool on those warm spring evenings.
Built in the late ’70s, this house has been a work in progress since the current owners bought it 20 years ago. Opening up spaces, replacing furniture, removing walls, and adding fresh coats of paint have made this remodel a complete labor of love. This 44-year-old home has been brought back to life with a little bit of hard work and a lot of TLC.

Alicia Utz
Alicia Utz’s smile can light up a room. Upon meeting her for the first time, it is immediately noticeable that she is pleasant, kind, and good-natured. However, when describing herself, she admits that she is a very determined person and that her mother even called her a “difficult child.” She is very passionate about the people and ideas that she holds close to her heart and admits that she has a little craziness mixed in to “keep things from getting too serious.”
Alicia Utz currently works for Hospice of Texarkana as an administrative assistant. She has a variety of responsibilities there which include helping plan and implement Hospice’s annual fundraiser, Jeans & Bling, performing a wide variety of office jobs, as well as walking the Hospice comfort dog, Maggie Grace. Alicia is proud of herself for having the courage and ability to re-invent herself to obtain a variety of professions. “Moving frequently with the Army presented the flexibility of many career paths. I am a certified elementary teacher who has taught grades K–5,” she explains. “I was a licensed Realtor® in Virginia where I assisted military families relocate into/out of the Northern Virginia/Washington DC area. Being a Realtor® also empowered me to learn to use social media platforms to promote my real estate business through digital marketing. I was also very fortunate to work with the official Army Wounded Warrior program, assisting seriously ill and injured service members to transition to non-military life.”
Alicia and her husband, Todd, are the parents of two adult children, Danielle and Radley. They also have two grandsons, Camren (11) and Carson (9). Finishing her bachelor’s degree in 3-1/2 years while her children were in pre-school and elementary school is a feat in which Alicia is very proud.
When seeking volunteer opportunities, Alicia typically chooses an agency/group that she passionate about. She recalls helping with her children’s school and extracurricular activities as her first volunteer positions. She has also spent a great deal of time volunteering with Army Family programs. “I am a prior military spouse of 12 years and enjoyed helping new spouses get accustomed to the military lifestyle,” she adds. “In addition to working with military spouses, I was a certified Red Cross volunteer and a regular volunteer for the USO. I most recently volunteered with Hospice of Texarkana helping out in their offices prior to accepting a paid position there.”
Alicia’s mother had the most influence on her as a child. Although she struggled with parenting, she did teach Alicia to become self-sufficient at an early age. “I think this is why I have been able to make difficult situations in my life a success,” she knowledges. “As for the biggest influencer in my life now, I would say my husband is my biggest cheerleader. From the moment we married, he has encouraged and supported me to pursue whatever I wanted to take on.”
On days when Alicia is not working at Hospice, one can find her behind the computer, learning about her newest adventure: investing in the stock market. She also enjoys scouring antique stores/flea markets to add to her many collections of treasures and dabbles in poetry, usually writing something for a loved one or friend.

FUN FACTS
What is something unique about you that most people would not know?
“When I was a senior in high school, I let my best friend, Dana, convince me to sell Avon so we could win a FREE trip to Hawaii. Sure enough, our district sold the most Avon in the United States, and Dana and I ended up having the best Senior Trip ever: an all-expense paid trip to Hawaii with a week of being treated like royalty. It was the first time I had ever flown or ridden in a limo!”
If you could have dinner with one person, famous or not, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would it be?
“I would love to have dinner with my Grandma Hohweiler. I was very young when she died but have heard my family talk of her coming to America from Germany back in the early 1900s. Her mother and father sent her to America with her aunt and uncle to escape the war. I would love to hear her recount that experience, as well as how she handled an
‘arranged’ marriage to my grandfather who was twice her age.”
What music do you listen to in your vehicle?
“I like all types of music, but mostly listen to ’70s and ’80s rock. It is funny; sometimes I can’t remember what I did yesterday, but I can remember lyrics to songs from the ’70s like it was yesterday. Music has a way of reaching your core and giving you great memories associated with a song’s lyrics.”
What did you imagine yourself being when you were growing up?
“I dreamed of being a stewardess, aka flight attendant, or race car driver. While neither one of those career paths worked out for me, my husband will tell you I still have a heavy foot on the gas pedal.”
What is the last gift you gave someone?
“I gave my secret pal at Hospice of Texarkana an Easter gift.”
What is your favorite meal that you order regularly at a local establishment?
“Ranchero Chihuahua – imagine fajita meat consisting of a mix of shrimp, beef, chicken and bacon, grilled with onions and green peppers, served over a cheesy bed of rice. Thank you, Loca Luna!”
If there was a movie produced about your life, which actress would portray you?
“I would like Melissa McCarthy to play my life story. I love how she has a wide variety of acting experience, but most importantly, she has the ability to make people laugh. I feel she can relate to my character, in that she too has pursued an additional career path when she launched her own clothing line.”
”
"It is what it is.”
- J.E. Lawrence in the Nebraska State Journal
When I think of my friend and neighbor, Alicia Utz, I think of a ray of sunshine, and I get a big smile on my face. Alicia is a lot of fun. She loves to laugh and to help others. She is very creative and is a great entertainer. She has a flair for color, decorating, and making her yard beautiful. Alicia and her husband, Todd, are also thoughtful and sweet neighbors. They have helped my husband and me with everything from changing a light bulb to bringing us homemade goodies. Alicia is very family-oriented and loves being with her family and planning enjoyable things to do with family and friends, down to every detail of the event. Where does she get the energy? Alicia has a bright light within her, and I’m so glad to know her and get to bask in her light. It is my pleasure to nominate my dear friend, Alicia Utz, as a Four States Living Magazine Tribute to Women 2021 honoree!

A Pinch of Salt
by Donnie Spriggs
As someone who loves food, I try my best to give recipes that I have at least used once. Because how can I write and talk about something I do not know? Ha! Who also gets tired of making the same old thing every week? I know I do! So, let’s change it up this next week and try and cook something new at least once a week. It is a great way to learn how to make new things and experience some food fun. This recipe is great and a family favorite. Who does not love meat, cheese, and pasta? This can be modified with a few things to help those picky eaters; I am sure I do not have to say this, but do not let them see you make it because it is not the prettiest thing in the world ... not slop for pigs but a close second! I promise you will not be mad you made it.
You just have to be careful when cooking the noodles. You do not overcook them because they will still cook some in the oven when you get ready to bake. Enjoy your new favorite dish!
Talk to y’all next month! Beef Florentine for the win at family dinner!
P.S. – This can be a messy meal when making it so keep a towel on you!
INGREDIENTS
1 (8-ounce) package wide egg noodles or shells
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1/2 medium onion, diced
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
2 (8-ounce) cans tomato sauce
2 (6-ounce) cans tomato paste
1/2 cup water
2 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt (a pinch of salt)
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
2 cups cottage cheese
1 (10-ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry (I prefer fresh!)
1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat oven to 350 degrees, and spray a 9x13-inch baking pan with cooking spray.
Cook noodles according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
Note: While water is coming to a boil, proceed to next step.
Add ground beef to a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Crumble it with a wooden spoon as it cooks. When it is about halfway cooked, add the onion and garlic.
Drain the grease from the pan and place back over medium-high heat.
Add Italian seasoning, tomato sauce, tomato paste, water, sugar, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes.
Simmer for 3-5 minutes.
Stir noodles into sauce. Spread half the sauce/noodle mixture in the bottom of the prepared pan.
In a medium bowl, stir together cottage cheese, spinach, and Parmesan cheese.
Spread cottage cheese mixture over the sauce/noodle layer.
Sprinkle with half the mozzarella cheese.
Spread remaining sauce/noodle mixture over the cheese layer.
Sprinkle on remaining mozzarella cheese.
Cover with foil. Be sure to spray the underside of the foil with cooking spray so the cheese doesn’t stick.
Bake for 20 minutes.
Uncover and bake another 10 minutes.

THE ROAD Tra veled less
BY NICHOLE HOLZE
As the summer heat ramps up, it’s time to start looking for some ways to cool off and have fun. One of our favorite retreats is Lake Ouachita in central Arkansas. Did you know it’s actually one of the cleanest lakes in the United States? It’s so clean that it’s also home to a unique species of freshwater jellyfish, which you can sometimes see floating around the warm waters in August and September. But don’t worry, it cannot sting you.
Another unique feature about Lake Ouachita is the fact that the lake is entirely within the bounds of the Ouachita National Forest. This means that you can camp on the more than 200 islands on the lake! The only exception is Bird Island, which is a protected area for migrating birds.
Last fall, I decided to take my children on an overnight canoe trip to experience camping on the islands. I packed our backpacking tent, a hammock (with bug netting), a small cooler, a waterproof dry bag with our sleeping bags and cookware, plus some food. And coffee, don’t forget the coffee. My son sat in the bow of our canoe, with some gear loaded behind him, my daughter in the middle, and I paddled from the stern. We launched from the boat ramp at Lake Ouachita State Park and raced a sailboat out of the marina. A word of caution, it’s important to stay close to the shoreline while in a smaller boat. One, for safety from larger boats, and two, because the lake is so big that wind can become an issue at times. We paddled about two miles and found an island with no one else on it, with a wonderful little cove where my kids could swim and play while I set up camp.
As I set up camp, I realized that one of our tent poles was broken, so I did my best MacGyver and taped it with medical tape. I also realized that while I remembered our backpacking cook stove and cookware, I forgot the fuel. So, a campfire to the rescue. Lucky for my children, I’m pretty good at getting a fire going.

That night we enjoyed the sounds of the lake gently lapping on the quartz lined beach, and the night sky lit up with more stars than we could ever see at home. It took our breath away as we stared at the glittering expanse above us. The next morning, the steam from the warm water gently lifted, disrupted by the excited shouts of my children. They were pumped to be able to swim in the early morning hours, thanks to the warm water. I made my coffee and soaked in one of the most peaceful camping mornings I can ever remember, before loading up and heading out.
If you’d like to camp on the islands, be sure to check out the Lake Ouachita Watertrail, a geotagged “trail” through the lake. There is a map saved on the Arkansas Watertrails Partnership website, and it makes navigating the lake a breeze.
Never afraid of a long drive, Nichole is a homeschooling mom to two and wife to Ryan. Coffee, always, and black please. You can probably find her scheming up their next road trip while hiking in the woods. Experience-based learning and good books abound in their homeschool, as they chase the spark of curiosity where it wanders on the road less traveled.

My mother is truly a genuinely kind human being, and I am blessed to call her mom.
