his past October, my son Briley, who we lovingly call Bear, got married to the love of his life, Ashlyn. We have called him Bear since about the time he started crawling. He didn’t crawl on all fours like most babies; he crawled with his hands down and his legs straight up, hence the nickname Bear. “Briley Bear” just worked, too. He was the kind of kid who would hug you tight and never be the first to let go. His sweet disposition coupled with those big bear hugs meant he knew just how to get everything he wanted from his parents and grandparents. As he grew, he loved Lego, guitars, puppy dogs, and anything funny. Joke books, pranks, movies, games— if laughter was involved, Briley was right there. From a pretty young age, his favorite television show was “The Office”; I remember that series playing nonstop in our game room. Luckily for his parents, teenage Briley didn’t chase girls or sneak out (that I know of). He was kind of nerdy, but not in that straight-A kind of way (as the baby of the family, we were happy with A’s and B’s). He was nerdy in the way that he loved his teachers, and he would stay after school just to visit with them. He would rather hang out with his grandmothers, who would cook him anything his heart desired, over spending the day with a bunch of other kids. He was a fairly easy child, if there is such a thing. So when he told me about “dating” this girl Ashlyn from school, I had a few questions. The first and most obnoxious question a parent asks, and of course I asked, was, “How are you ‘dating’ when you aren’t allowed to date?” In my day (and I know I sound ridiculous now), teenagers were “going together,” even if they only talked on the phone and never went anywhere. I’m sure there is a new term for being a couple in 2025 that I haven’t heard about yet, but according to 16-year-old Briley, he started “dating” Ashlyn the day he stole the dessert that she was eating at the lunch table in the cafeteria at school. the boys, knowing his plan, laugh hysterically; Ashlyn is embarrassed but also laughs. And, that was the beginning of forever. Turns out, “dating” those days involved a lot of texting and hanging out, streaming old episodes of “The Office,” and playing video games together. What I would call their first “real date” was a Texas High homecoming dance. Like every other mom trying to find the most Pinterest-worthy homecoming “proposal” for her teenager, I dug into the internet like a researcher on a dissertation. I had ideas, and he vetoed every single one of them. It was like I was the dumbest mom on the planet. So, I backed away and let him do his thing. The next thing I knew, he had recreated a prank scene from “The Office.” In my refrigerator was a stapler suspended in yellow Jell-O. I was so confused. I was in my child-raising years, so I didn’t watch much TV, and I was especially not interested in whatever the kids had running in the background. Briley assured me that Ashlyn would get the joke, and all I had to do was find him a yellow shirt and a “bad tie.” Then, he let me drive him over to her house to pop the question. “HoCo?” Ashlyn said “yes” to their first real date and their first real dance. Those two kids became inseparable. Where there was one, there was the other. Birthdays. Holidays. Family days. High school graduation. When they told us that they were going to the same college, several hours away, I worried. They were still kids, and if a breakup was to happen, I wasn’t going to be close enough to be the giver of the bear hugs. But they were a tight duo, and no matter the parents’ fears, they were both going to UCA. Ashlyn and Briley grew stronger over the next five years in Conway. They experienced college graduation, their first full-time jobs, being on their own, and eventually moving to Fort Worth. I wasn’t surprised when he told me that he was going to ask her to be his wife; she is the perfect person in the world for him. Now, some sons listen to their mothers more than others. You know I had ideas about the proposal: where he should ask her and how he could ask her and when he might ask her. But just like that first homecoming proposal, he wasn’t letting me have any part in it! There would be no photographer or mountain vista background or family members allowed to watch from afar. This was his and Ashlyn’s journey, and even if he wanted to dress up like Jim from “The Office” and propose to his real-life Pam with a stapler refrigerated in Jell-O, it was going to be his way. I’m smiling ear to ear right now thinking about these two. They have been married for three months, and without a doubt, I know that they are one of the lucky couples out there, together for all of the best reasons: friendship, laughter, admiration, trust, and love. While every wedding we included in this special issue was cover-worthy, I pulled a once-in-25-years act and put my favorite son, with his beautiful new wife, on the front cover. I hope you enjoy it, and as always, thanks for reading FSLM.

“On Christmas morning 2022, we were gathered around the tree in our apartment, exchanging the gifts we’d picked out for each other,” Ashlyn recalled. “Even our dog, Stubby, had his own stocking, where Briley had cleverly hidden the ring. It was such a heartfelt moment, and I truly believe he asked me in the most perfect way.”

“There was never a doubt in my mind about who would walk me down the aisle, but I still feel he deserves to be celebrated for the incredible role he has played in my life: my stepdad, Matt, has always been there for me—steadfast and supportive,” Ashlyn said. “He has done so much for me over the years, and I am endlessly grateful for everything he’s given me. Having him by my side for such a profound and meaningful moment was an honor I will cherish forever.”

“Having my groomsmen by my side on my wedding day was truly incredible,” Briley said. “Some of them I hadn’t seen in so long, so having all of my closest friends together in one place meant the world to me. “Seeing friends and family we don’t often get to spend time with was so deeply meaningful for both of us,” Briley said. “Life after college, living farther from loved ones, and now moving to Central Texas has sometimes made family feel distant. But having everyone come together in such a beautiful place created a moment that felt nothing short of magical. It’s a memory we’ll hold close to our hearts forever.”

“The first look was undeniably the highlight of our wedding day,” Melissa shared. “It provided the perfect moment to see each other for the first time, but it also offered us a much-needed chance to reconnect after a whirlwind of preparation. It was especially meaningful as it marked the first time we saw all three of our children together, as they had been separated between the dressing rooms beforehand. This quiet, intimate moment allowed us to pause, reflect, and regroup before the celebration began, welcoming our loved ones who had come to share in the joy of our union.”

“We will always cherish the memory of our son, Micah, who embraced his role of escorting both the mother of the bride and the bride with such seriousness, pride, and joy,” Melissa said. “His enthusiasm added an extra special touch to the day. Our two daughters, Mila and Matilda, were the perfect flower girls, radiating sweetness in their delicate floral halos. They had been practicing with their flower baskets for weeks, and their dedication made their moment down the aisle all the more magical.”

“After the celebration, we decided the best way to end such a perfect day was with a private dinner at Verona, a charming Italian restaurant,” Melissa said. “It was the perfect setting for a quiet, intimate moment together.”

“Janet and Craig Cox planned the entire wedding for over a year,” Nicole said. “We got to spend so much time together going over every detail. It was the sweetest season of our lives, and I am so grateful they shared such a huge role in planning.”

“We really got to soak up some extra time together after having our first look and reading our vows. There was nothing more special than getting to spend several hours together with my husband before the wedding began,” Nicole reflected.

A Chef Who’s Loving What He Does Jeff Loving is a seasoned chef with 30 years of culinary expertise. Though local to the Texarkana scene, many of his formative years were shaped by a life of travel, thanks to his father’s 33-year service in the Navy. This journey took him through a variety of cultures; he called Japan, the Philippines, and Hawaii home before eventually moving to Texarkana. Jeff’s intro to the culinary world started as a way to make money in the summertime. “I started cooking early, on the naval bases,” he said. He took on roles as prep cook, busboy, and sandwich maker, eventually progressing to grill positions. He thrived in the vibrant chaos of the kitchen. “I figured out pretty early that I was halfway decent,” he said. Over the course of his career, he has launched a multitude of restaurants all over the South. Over the past 21 years in Texarkana, he has opened local restaurants like Brick House Burgers, Fillin’ Station Grill, and Twisted Fork. He also played a pivotal role in launching the fine-dining establishment Timothy’s alongside his cousin Tim. This wide array of restaurant experience reflects Jeff’s culinary sensibilities, influenced by a rich tapestry of influences. Raised by his French mother, he grew up steeped in French cuisine and made frequent visits to France. Thus, his cuisine “combines a touch of French, a hint of Americana, and a dash of Southern flair,” he said. Chef Jeff transitioned from restaurateur to caterer in 2009. Successful catering, Jeff shared, is a trickier gig than meets the eye. “Consistency with gigs of 25 to 400 people is very hard,” he explained. “You must not overcook anything and not undercook anything as well, because you are bringing your food up to temperature and timing it with the client’s time for eating. That’s why good communication with the client and constant checking of the food is super important.” Aside from logistics, there is another challenge of catering that can be delicate to maneuver: making a profit. “People really don’t understand what it takes to put together a catered event as far as pricing, travel, freshness, and presentation,” Jeff said. “I’m actually one of the cheaper caterers in Texarkana, and I can’t even raise my prices like I should because people refuse to pay what the food cost and what I’m worth, so it’s a struggle.” In addition to catering, Jeff also works as a private chef, a role he has grown to enjoy more and more. “Just a few years ago, while private cheffing in Hochatown, I had an epiphany,” he said. “This is what I wanna do for the rest of my life: more cheffing, less catering.” Through the highs and lows of his culinary career, Chef Jeff remains confident in his skills, passion, and community. “I think people are finally realizing what I can do, what I can provide, and what I’m all about,” he said. “Texarkana has been really good to me. I see big changes for Chef on the Run in the future. I’d like to thank my mom for inspiring me by watching her when I was a little kid, all of my employees I’ve worked with over the years, and all the chefs who pushed me and let me be myself. I’d also like to thank my cousin Tim Loving and Mark Van Herpen for allowing me to build my restaurants and follow my dreams.”

“Allison and I were in Maui for a vacation,” Brock said. “One night, I told her that we were going to a luau at Wailea Beach Resort. When we arrived, I had a picnic set up on the cliffs of the beach while the sun was setting. There was champagne, food, and even a hidden photographer to catch the moment that I was going to ask her to marry me. The weather was perfect, and she wasn’t expecting anything the entire trip up to that point. I got on my knee and popped the question. The rest is history. “The only hiccup,” he added, “was that we had never been to this resort, and I was lost trying to find the exact picnic location. I had to sneak over and ask the staff where to go without being too obvious that I had something planned. Luckily, we were finally pointed in the right direction, but my nerves were racing the entire time.”

“We decided to not have a wedding party during the ceremony,” Allison shared. “We’ve been in weddings before and loved being up there with our friends and family, but we decided that we only wanted the two of us up there together.”

“One of the things that we loved was having both of our mothers light our unity candle during the wedding ceremony right before we said our vows,” Allison said. “We liked the idea of incorporating a unity candle into the service, and having them be a part of it was extra special.”

“It was a very humid evening, and after a long night of dancing, we were burning up in the Texas heat,” Allison recalled. “The Chateau South has an open courtyard right in the middle of the house with a pool. After most of our guests left, we decided to jump in and take a swim. It was a perfect way to cool off after such a long day.”

“I wore my mom’s veil that she wore in her wedding when she married my dad,” Caroline shared. “It was a cathedral-length veil with pearls scattered throughout. I loved getting to do this, especially since my parents got married in the same church.”

“My dad’s speech at the wedding reception was by far one of my favorite parts of the night,” Caroline shared. “Everything he said had every guest either crying or laughing. It was so special and meaningful to both me and Chase and something we will cherish forever.”

“Our exit was so fun,” Caroline recalled. “We had artificial snow blowing from above the entrance to the county club. I absolutely loved it, and it was definitely perfect for a cold, January evening. It felt like a winter wonderland.”

“Though the day held a lot of unexpected mishaps, there were countless joys,” Alex said. “Possibly my favorite part of the day was sitting in our reception at dinner and looking at all of our 200 guests who made the trip to small-town New Boston, Texas, in the middle of one of the worst thunderstorms of the year. “One of my favorite things about our wedding was how we incorporated our crest into so many details,” Alex said. “My sister designed it, which made it even better. We had them printed on the cups and koozies at the cocktail bar, on tea towels for the catering staff, on stickers for the bridesmaid gift boxes, on menus at each place setting topped with a bow, and on our welcome sign. It felt like our first ‘thing,’ so it was sweet to see it everywhere. I want to get a Christmas tree ornament made with it now to commemorate the day.” 38

“The details are my bread and butter; I think that’s what makes a wedding,” Alex said. “One of my favorite parts of the wedding was the gold etagere that paid an ode to our families. My parents got married in 1992, and my mom planned her wedding all by herself. It was beautiful. One unique detail she had was live goldfish in her flower arrangements. As a nod to her wonderfulness and my parents’ 32-year marriage, I bought a live goldfish to sit on the etagere along with photos of our parents and grandparents at their wedding.”

“Our wedding day was April 26th, which just so happened to be the day 100 tornadoes touched down across the country, and there was terrible weather everywhere,” Alex said. “What was supposed to be a beautiful outdoor ceremony on the lawn, an outdoor cocktail hour with a live musician, and dinner in the reception hall with the doors open and tables on the veranda quickly turned into 200 guests with umbrellas rushing into a chapel, a cancelled cocktail hour, and all of the dining tables crammed inside with doors sealed shut to prevent the torrential downpour from getting inside. So many pieces and projects unused, details ruined by weather, and expectations unmet. It wrecked me for a little bit. But we still said yes before God and our families, we still danced the night away with our best friends, and we still drove away husband and wife. It almost made the day even more special, seeing it happen despite all of the chaos.”

“The proposal was lovely. We were on our way to what I thought was a regular family dinner, which we have once a month,” Dacoda explained. “Gage had been acting weird that morning—not nervous, but telling me what I needed to wear and that I couldn’t wear my hats, and everyone who knows me knows how I love my hats. We got there, and my cousin Nicole asked me if I could help her with something upstairs—she wanted me to paint something for her baby girl’s room. Anyways, she keeps me up there talking about what designs she wants and how she wants it, and then, all of the sudden, she’s like, ‘Okay, let’s go back downstairs. Everyone’s outside looking at the new cattle.’ So, I followed, not thinking anything of it. We walked outside, and I was surprised by Gage down on one knee with my whole family. Friends had snuck in as well. It was amazing. We were both shaking and giggling. All I could think of was that, from this day on, I would get to spend the rest of my life with my best friend. Following this amazing proposal was an engagement party with friends and family.”

“We loved being able to see all of the people who came to show their love and support. Getting to take pictures and create lasting memories with the people we love was amazing,” Dacoda said.

“Joel’s father, David Orr, passed away two years ago, and Joel holds many special memories playing golf with him at Texarkana Country Club,” Rachel said. “With this in mind, we chose a peaceful, special area in the middle of the golf course to gather under a beautiful oak tree for a small ceremony. During the ceremony, we had an outdoor cocktail hour on the upper deck overlooking the golf course for arriving guests to enjoy prior to joining us for a reception in the ballroom.”

“Family is very important to both Joel and myself,” Rachel said. “I have three siblings, and we each live in different states, so to have everyone together in one place was the greatest gift. Moving forward, we’re most excited to just begin our normal day-to-day life as a blended family. With five growing children under one roof, there’s never a dull moment and always someone wanting to eat or a sporting event to go to. It’s beautiful chaos.”

My ‘something new’ was a new perfume picked for our day.”

“My favorite part of the wedding was seeing Hunter’s face light up when he saw me walking down the aisle,” Summer said. “It instantly calmed my nerves.”

“Hunter and I asked Rev. John Barfield to be our officiant for our wedding. He married Hunter’s parents, so it was very important to us that he officiate our wedding also,” Summer explained. “Unfortunately, he passed away a few months before our wedding. Another person who is very special to us is my brotherin-law Nathan Reiter. We felt like he would be a great fit to officiate our wedding also, and he exceeded our expectations. It was so great to us to have him play such a big role in our wedding.”

“When Hunter and I had just started dating, ‘Watch The Wind Blow By’ by Tim McGraw came on the radio, and the first thing Hunter said was, ‘This is the song I want us to dance to at our wedding,’” Summer shared. “It was very heartwarming that he was so confident in our very new relationship. “In Aspen, Colorado, in the fall, we went for lunch at a sculpture garden, and as we were walking there through Anderson Park at Aspen Meadows, Hayden got down on one knee and asked me to marry him,” Sarah said. “I was very surprised but very ready after dating him for eight years.” “One thing that was really special for our wedding was the fact that we walked down the aisle in the exact same spot that Hayden proposed to me, 11 months tothe-day before,” Sarah added.

“Some of my most cherished moments leading up to our wedding and the week-of were spent with my sister, Hannah, who helped me endlessly with all things wedding,” Sarah said. “I was not a typical bride—I really just wanted to have a great party (on the smaller side), good food and drinks, and to be somewhere that both Hayden and I treasured with all of our loved ones.
