The Way I See It...

PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Happy New Year from the animals and me; we make a lot of noise, but really we just want to be fed and loved! And from my daughter, Emily, who is my shadow and my conscience, “If you don’t want to get run over by my wheelchair, be cautious around people in wheelchairs.” And from my daughter who is a teacher, “Read to your kids and give them free time to think and investigate and play outside.” And from my son who is a nursing student, “Stay the course in this war against COVID; it’s not over yet.”

Dang, I just want to be fed and loved. Has it gotten that basic? Yes, I think it has. These last two years have been exhausting. No sugarcoating it. If the emotional energy hasn’t drained you, you must live in a hut with no way to reach the outside world. Then you are just lonely. I have felt lonely since COVID began. The short few months where infection rates dropped and fewer people died felt like the end of the war was near. And then another variant exploded onto the scene.

So, moving into 2022, let’s be cautiously optimistic. Optimism equals positive attitude, and good attitudes are part of a balanced diet for this new year. Remember, I’m all about being fed and loved. Part of surviving these days involves finding ways to interact with others and not make bad decisions. Trust me when I say I’m the queen of bad decisions with love and food. I crave both, but maybe I never figured out the balance to be successful with either.

One year, I only ate Subway sandwiches. Full stop. Yes, I only ate Subway sandwiches, and I didn’t mix them up either; the club was my daily order. Jared must have been doing the commercials that year.

Four St ates Living

Another year, I ate a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Blast from Sonic every single day for lunch. Not Oreo or M&M or Butterfinger. I am a routine girl, with a regular order. If you worked there, I knew your name, and you knew my order. “No whipped cream on top, right?” Right. That stuff is gross. In the last year or so, I have discovered Little Caesars cheese breadsticks and Crazy Sauce. Even my kids won’t eat what I eat. Without a doubt, the reason my weight has been like Oprah’s back in the ’80s is due to my annual restaurant picks. I will say that the Newk’s chicken salad sandwich is looking like the choice for 2022, and that is for sure a win over cheese bread or ice cream.

I quit making New Year’s resolutions to cook or learn to cook or hire a cook many moons ago. It was just not sustainable for me. I truly despise the idea of raw meat in my fridge, hands, or a pan on my stove. The only way I like it is on a plate. And doing dishes is worse than cleaning toilets. Why do I have this aversion to all things food prep related? Only a good mental health counselor could figure that out, and I am honestly not interested in the answer. Just feed me, for goodness sake. To the friends I know by name at local restaurants who lead, prep, cook, serve, and do dishes, I truly love you all. As long as you guys keep going to work, I feel like I can survive anything. Except maybe the loneliness part that the pandemic has introduced.

For those of you interested in love, there are so many ways to meet people virtually these days. From Facebook dating to Match.com to Tinder (which I do not do for prudish reasons), you can find pictures and

profiles of any kind of person you desire. My problem is time. The only time I take to virtually match or look at these apps is after I’ve snuggled into bed and taken my Ambien (prescription, amnesiatic, sleeping pill). The lights are off, and the heating blanket is on, and the dogs are at my feet, and some crazy, subconscious, flirtatious instinct prods me to tap the app. Photos of men in their natural habitat, doing their favorite things, flood my feed. The question for me is “By looking at a man’s name, age, and photo, is he interesting enough to swipe right for?” Does it sound shallow? It is. Is there a better way to meet people in 2022? I don’t think so. Let me know if you want to set me up on a blind date.

Every year, I try to write some resolutions. This year, if a nice guy comes into my dating app, I resolve to not judge him based on the fish or the dead animal he is holding in his profile picture. I promise to give him a second chance if he does not know what an Oxford comma is. I will not ghost him just because he has a 30-year-old child OR a first grader. And, I resolve to make time to actually go on the first dates in real life that are so annoying and awkward. Over the years, I have had some nice dates, but the timing wasn’t right. Timing truly is everything.

Maybe 2022 is my time (and I think that’s the name of a dating app, too).

Our focus for this issue is “Fresh Starts & Full Hearts.” No matter what else is going on in the world, love and nourishment keep us spinning. Hopeful for lots of both in this new year. Happy 2022 friends, and as always, thanks for reading FSLM

A “TELL”-TALE SIGN

Stephen and I always joke that we met through “gossip!” After hearing about my recent breakup with an ex while he was at work, Stephen decided to look me up on Facebook to see who his coworkers were discussing. He had a mutual friend call me that week to tell me that he heard about me at work, thought I was beautiful, and would like to talk to me if I was interested. We met for dinner at LongHorn a couple of weeks later, and here we are!

FIRST AND LAST DATE

After dinner on our first date, we sat on Stephen’s back patio where we talked and laughed for hours. On the night of our engagement, Stephen lit up the walkway to that same patio with candles, hung a sign that read “I have found the one whom my soul loves” – Song of Solomon 3:4, and used marquee letters to spell out “Marry Me” on the patio! Of course, I said YES!

ROSE ALL DAY

One day I showed Stephen my “ideal” engagement ring, rose gold, of course! This AMAZING man of mine had my ring custom made to exactly match the Pinterest picture I showed him.

GLORY BE TO GOD

We give God all of the glory for our relationship and honored Him as the center of our marriage through a Unity Cross we made during the reception.

HENSLEY EVER AFTER

Every August, we will now both not only get to celebrate the gift of life (our birthdays), but the gift of each other as husband and wife.

WE BELONG TOGETHER

Brandon and I met while in dental school in Dallas and started dating toward the end of our last year in school. Brandon moved to Jacksonville, Florida, in June of 2018 to start his Oral Surgery residency program, and I joined him in late 2019.

JUST THE TWO OF US

Brandon proposed in Savannah, Georgia, just a short drive from where we currently live. It was a great weekend celebrating just the two of us.

GOING TO THE CHAPEL

I grew up going to Williams Memorial, and I knew it would be the perfect place to get married. I have a lot of great memories in that church, and I wanted the start of our married life together to be in a place meaningful and special.

A family affair

We had the best time celebrating with all of our family and friends at the reception. It meant a lot to us to have all our favorite people in the same place.

GETTING BACK TO OUR ROOTS

We will be in Florida until Brandon finishes residency in 2024, but look forward to many trips back to Texarkana and Southlake (where Brandon is from) to visit family. While our home now and the start of our life together is in the Sunshine State, we cannot wait to get back to Texas one day.

meant to be

Cody and I lived in different states but met on a dating app, and we know it was a total God thing that we matched up.

THE PERFECT PROPOSAL

The proposal night was a total surprise to me – Cody did it exactly how I wanted it. The proposal was very intimate with just us, and then he had over 80 friends and family ready to surprise us. Many had flown and driven in from out of state!

A RECEPTION TO REMEMBER

One of the most touching things from our reception was that my dad sang to us for our first dance, and it was a total surprise to everyone! He kept it together but everyone was crying by the end. He sang “I Loved Her First.”

THE PERFECT DATE

Our wedding was exactly how we imagined it – lots of family and friends celebrating that afternoon and all evening with us! It was “the perfect date.”

FROM THIS MOMENT ON

Cody loved planning our grand exit and even booked a 1944 Rolls Royce as our exit vehicle! It was the best ending to the best day of our lives.

A SCENIC TOUR TO MARRIAGE

We took the long, scenic journey to marriage. We met in 2004 in the Tex*Rep production of “Hello Dolly.”

After dating all these years, and navigating many of life’s hills and valleys, it was past time to take the next step. In June, we unexpectedly lost my mother, which was extremely painful. After her passing, we decided to plan our wedding and end the year with happiness.

THE ENGAGEMENT

We got engaged at the Texarkana Country Club on Valentine’s Day 2016. Initially, setting a wedding date proved challenging due to our hectic schedules. Then, real life got in the way with parental illness, deaths, COVID and the massive 2020 fire at First Baptist. We laugh at the movie, “The Five Year Engagement,” since we have actually lived it.

A PROPER CHURCH WEDDING

It was our heart’s desire to get married at our church, FBC Texarkana, by Pastor Jeff Schreve. We also wanted our childhood pastors, Jim Harris of Bethel Baptist Church (Richmond Road) and Anthony Tropp of Faith Baptist Church (New Boston) included. Finally, God blessed us with some of our very best friends and close family as our wedding party.

AN ELEGANT RECEPTION

We held our reception in the Atrium at FBC. The food, flowers, and design were incredible. We had a lovely jazz band to set an elegant atmosphere. My wedding designer, Peggy Speer, re-created the NYC restaurant “Tavern on the Green” spectacularly. It was so meaningful to celebrate with our dear wedding guests.

HONEYMOON IN PARADISE

After the reception, we had a dazzling send-off complete with sparklers and well wishers. We headed straight to the Gaylord Texan in Dallas for a restful weekend. Next, we flew to Cabo San Lucas where we honeymooned in style at the 5 star Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal. The staff at the resort went above and beyond to cater to our every need and even changed our mattress and installed an Apple TV for us! We had a week of glorious sun, rest, and happiness at the Waldorf resort, located on the spectacular Sea of Cortez.

PURE ROMANCE

Jimmy and I ran into each other at Dillard’s at the mall here in Texarkana. We talked to each other for a bit, and then the next day he contacted me. He asked me out several different times, and I then told him yes. Our first date was private at Benchmark. We had our own room with a waitress and all. After our second date is when we committed to each other and knew we wanted to spend our lives together.

A MAGICAL PROPOSAL

After eight months of dating, we became engaged at Redbone Magic Brewing here in Texarkana on May 28. It was a sweet proposal done with magic. The band we hired to play at our reception was playing that night so it all was lined out perfectly. Jimmy pulled a sweet magical proposal.

GOING TO THE CHAPEL

We started planning the wedding before we officially became engaged, and I had been looking at Four Fifteen Estates that is located in New Boston. I loved the layout and everything about it. It is high end contemporary, and that’s what caught my eye.

EAT, DRINK, AND BE MARRIED

We got married at Four Fifteen Estates and had our reception out there as well. I would marry Jimmy all over again each and every day.

LOVE IS OUR FOUNDATION

Jimmy and I live in the Pleasant Grove area, and we are thankful to have a foundation of love in our home.

THE START OF FOREVER

Greg and I both grew up in Texarkana but went to different high schools. While Greg attended Arkansas High, I attended Texas High School where we met at a mutual friend’s house. We dated long distance for about three years until we both moved back to Texarkana after college.

SHE SAID “YES”

We got engaged in my living room in Texarkana! It was very private and exhilarating. We had a celebratory brunch afterward at Texarkana Country Club.

WHEN TWO BECOME ONE

Our wedding was nontraditional. We had a private ceremony inside my aunt and uncle’s house with all of our friends and family joining us. Our dog, Clyde, was the ring bearer in our wedding. We shared the same wedding anniversary as my grandparents back in 1954 so we knew they were watching over us from heaven that day.

EAT, DRINK, AND BE MARRIED

Our reception was at Dr. Mark and Carla Wren’s house where we had the best time with our wedding guests and our dog, Clyde. We celebrated all night long!

WEDDING PERKS

Although COVID pushed our wedding back a year, there were some perks along the way. We ended up winning a free year’s worth of Busch Light Beer! We were also featured in Cooper Alan’s music video, “Tough Ones.”

LOVE AT FIRST LAUGH

Scott and I met through a mutual friend about four years ago. We noticed we didn’t have local accents. Scott grew up in Chicago and then Foreman. I am originally from Poland and was raised mostly in Brooklyn, New York. As we started to converse more and more, I noticed how naturally funny Scott was; he just kept making me laugh. After meeting that first night, I couldn’t wait to see him again!

THAT TEXARKANA MAGIC

Although Scott and I were raised in big cities, we are really drawn to the small city feel. We love the tempo of Texarkana, and that is truly a blessing these days! We love living here and are excited for what is in store for us and the future of Texarkana! I’m a teacher for the Texarkana Arkansas School District, and love it! Scott works as a network engineer for Four States Fiber in Texarkana, Arkansas. He is also a die-hard Razorbacks fan. I was never a college football fan, but he has definitely turned me into one! Go Razorbacks!

TOWN AND COUNTRY

I wanted to include as many Polish traditions in our wedding as I could. With so much family unable to join us due to COVID, including those traditions was extremely special to both of us. Carrie (Persnickety Too) made me a flower crown to wear during the reception. My uncles sang “Sto Lat” and other Polish songs, and my parents danced the Polka. We also wanted to include the bread and salt ceremony and, of course, the vodka! “Na Zdrowie!” (Cheers!)

A FOURTH OF JULY IN JANUARY

My father surprised us with a huge fireworks display to cap the evening off. I’m pretty sure the entire city was able to watch with us! What a wonderful gift to watch a beautiful display of love and then dance the night away with all of our closest family and friends.

TO THE FUTURE

We’re expecting our first child in April. We are so excited! After the baby is born, we plan to travel to Poland and see our Polish family who, unfortunately, could not attend the wedding due to COVID travel restrictions. I know Scott is excited to introduce them to college football and the Razorbacks! Hopefully we can bring some Polish food back home because Texarkanians love to eat!

THE DATING GAME

Brody and I met in 2012. I had just graduated high school and moved back to Texas from Roanoke, Virginia, and was staying with my cousins. Another cousin of mine pulled into the driveway with Brody in tow. He told me from that night on, he knew I would be his wife. We dated for a few years, but ended up breaking apart. We were just kids that were trying to figure out life, with college and jobs. I was attending Texas A&M University - Texarkana, and he was going to Oklahoma State University - Institute of Technology. We never really lost contact and still spoke on the phone fairly regularly. Then 2019 rolled around, and we decided that we liked life a lot better with each other in it and started dating again.

ONE STEP CLOSER

Brody proposed on March 27, 2021, while we were feeding our cows. I think the cows approved.

A SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY

I started telling friends and family. One friend, Afton Perrin, insisted that we use their home as our wedding venue. She was so tickled because we got engaged on her anniversary!

TYING THE KNOT

Our wedding day seemed to fly by. We had friends and family galore, rushing to tell us that it was about time we tied the knot. We had such an amazing time, ate way too much food, and I even managed to get some cake on Brody’s face. (He was not amused). We went to bed that night exhausted, but with our hearts so full.

A COUPLE OF KIDS IN LOVE

Now that things have started to settle down, it is back to business. I am applying to continue my education with TAMUT’s graduate program in the summer, pursuing a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. We are also hoping to start a family soon. No matter what happens, we are so blessed to have each other. I know it’s sappy, but I guess that’s normal for a couple of kids in love.

When Life Throws CURVE BALLS

ALTHOUGH SHE HAS RECENTLY EXPERIENCED A DIVORCE AND A CAREER CHANGE, ASHLEY COOPER PUTS ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE OTHER AND KEEPS A SMILE ON HER

FACE

The unpredictability of life is what keeps it interesting. But sometimes the curve balls are more detrimental than exciting. How someone handles change is a reflection of their character. Maya Angelou said, “I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back.” Ashley Cooper has definitely started throwing back.

A Texarkana native, born and raised, Ashley played college softball at Texarkana College. She has taught first grade, and she has styled hair. At 44, Ashley has recently experienced a divorce and a career change. These are two major stressors for most people. While she admits there have been hard days, she has chosen to keep moving forward.

“Starting over is scary. I think many people stay in relationships because of the fear of the unknown. I just jumped in headfirst, did the best I could, and made the best out of the situation. Even when divorce is something you want, it doesn’t mean it’s easy. You don’t erase 17 years of memories,” Ashley explains.

Ashley has coped with this challenge as many people do. She has built a social media following and uses the platform to share her struggles and encourage others. “Social media is my jam … I have really used social media as a personal diary and a window into my world. Sometimes I am funny. I can be serious, and I’ve even cried on my live videos. I show the good, bad, and ugly,” Ashley says.

When social media wasn’t enough, Ashley took a bold step and asked for help. At one point, the depression was too much, and Ashley began a medication regimen. “There were many days I did not get out of bed, answer the phone, or reply to texts. There were days I did not eat, and I sunk into a depression,” Ashley says.

During the ID Revolution national event this past April at the Omni in Frisco, Texas, Ashley helped train 1,000 people on social media tips. Ashley enjoyed spending Thanksgiving with her father, Jeff Taylor, and her step-mother’s family. Friends Jennifer Shelton and Brandi Vickers joined Ashley for her first girls night out at Twisted Fork after her divorce this past summer.
37 JANUARY 2022 fourstatesliving.com

It was only a temporary fix, but it was enough to get through that rough patch, and eventually she was able to quit the medication entirely. “I am very transparent on my journey, and I got on [medication] in July. It did its job of making me numb with no feelings. One day I woke up and decided I didn’t want to be that girl anymore. I have been off my [medication] since October, and I feel like I have finally found Ashley again.”

Ashley admits that divorce is hard, but she wakes up every morning feeling grateful. Divorce definitely does not erase the memories. But she makes a conscious choice to make every day a good one. She chooses to be positive and focus on creating new memories. “My advice to women starting over is this ... you can do it.

It won’t always be strawberries and champagne, but you will look up in six months and say, ‘I did it. I am okay.’”

Ashley is throwing back against divorce.

Strike one.

Nine years ago, Ashley got involved in Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) by accident. “I did a weight loss challenge with my previous company and had amazing results that led me to sharing what I was doing with friends and the rest is history,” she says.

Unfortunately, that company changed their compensation plan, and Ashley left them for a new venture with ID Life. ID Life is a health and wellness company

Ashley attended a Top 100 Dinner for ID Life in Frisco with her friends, Pam Klim, Donna Cash and Elizabeth Ganoung.

that focuses on customized nutrition plans. They utilize the customer’s own DNA to determine which vitamins and products her body needs. They offer products for weight loss, energy, wellness, hydration, and sleep.

Although some detractors argue that MLM is nothing more than a pyramid scheme, Ashley has a logical response to this complaint. “The truth is everyone works in a ‘pyramid’ in almost all jobs. The question you have to ask yourself is as an employee will I ever make more than my supervisor, boss, CEO, or owner? The answer is no. In a traditional job your pay is set; in network marketing your pay is a reflection of the work you do.”

She might be on to something. While the rest of the world suffered when the economy took a major hit from the COVID-19 pandemic, Ashley’s business continued to thrive. Although the face-to-face events were canceled, the company utilized Zoom meetings. They chose to pivot, and it worked. “I had a great year because our products are consumable. Most everyone wants to look better, feel better, and perform better so I was able to keep products moving throughout my business.”

Clearly, Ashley was born with an entrepreneurial spirit. She says she will never say no to an opportunity to earn extra cash, which is how she also became a realtor one year ago. She sat down with her brokerage in December and laid out a plan for 2022. She wants to serve five to ten families in the buying and selling of their homes this year. “I have big dreams and goals, so I thought why not add another stream of income. Now being by myself, I am excited that I have options to earn income in different ways,” Ashley says.

Losing her first business after building it up for six years would have been a huge blow for most people. Ashley caught that curve ball, changed direction, and threw it back.

Strike two.

Newly divorced and building a new business, Ashley has an opportunity to determine what her next chapter will look like. “Like I said earlier, even if you want the divorce, it doesn’t make it easy. I think going to places alone is probably

the hardest for me now. I am now the single girl that’s invited or the third wheel. I know this is only temporary, and I have to heal my heart before I allow anyone else into mine,” Ashley says.

So she plans to go into 2022 with a positive attitude and feel grateful for the life she does have. She knows there are people praying for what she already has, and she will never not be thankful for her journey. “I am rebuilding me, my life, and my business. I see 2022 as a blank canvas that I am going to make beautiful.”

Ashley moves forward surrounded by love. She is a daddy’s girl and has four fur babies. Her chihuahuas are Daisy Duke, Molly Beth, and Jack. Goldie is her blind miniature pinscher. She enjoys reading, loves to travel, and plays competitive tennis.

When the waves swallow up a sand castle, few people sit down and immediately start rebuilding, but that is exactly what Ashley has done.

Strike three.

“2022 is a new year for us all. I know I am setting personal and business goals for me. I challenge each of you to get out a piece of paper, write down two things you’d love to accomplish in 2022. Don’t just wish for an amazing 2022. Write it down, and go make it one. Even if you don’t accomplish your two things, I bet you will look up and see that you accomplished so much getting there,” Ashley says.

Ashley has taken life’s curve balls and thrown back strikes. She is taking practice swings right now with goal setting. It looks like 2022 is going to be a home run.

LOGAN PILGREEN, THE FIRST FEMALE DIVISION 1 SOCCER ATHLETE FROM TEXARKANA, LOOKS FORWARD TO PLAYING FOR THE SFA LADYJACKS

SOCCER is Life

Everyone loves a good sports story, especially when there is a triumphant ending. While Logan Pilgreen’s sports story is far from over, there is most definitely a triumphant bow to tie on the end of her high school career: she graduated this past December a semester early, and is now headed to Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, to play collegiate soccer, the first female Division 1 soccer athlete to come out of Texarkana.

Logan, the daughter of Lindsey and Gregg Pilgreen, has grown up in Texarkana with her brother, Knox. Her parents are co-owners of Sports Magic Screen Printing and Embroidery, and her grandparents own Redbone Magic Brewing. As if the family businesses aren’t hard enough work, Logan has spent her entire life so far playing soccer. She doesn’t just play soccer—she breathes soccer. “Soccer plays one of the biggest roles of all in my life,” Logan said. “My entire life pretty much revolves around soccer. It’s my way to breathe, and in a way, escape from real life.”

Logan has sacrificed a lot over the years to get the opportunity to play at a collegiate level, but she says it has all been worth it. “Soccer is the reason I push myself in school; I have to do well to pursue my dreams,” Logan said. “By no means has this been an easy ride, but I have just set my mind to what I want to accomplish. I’ve sacrificed birthday parties, sleepovers, get-togethers, school dances. Even my senior year of high school is being cut in half, and I won’t get to play my last season of high school soccer, and through all those inconveniences, I have never thought twice about the situation I am in. I believe that God gave me this ability, and it comes with downfalls, but I have the mindset that those things are put in

Logan officially became a part of SFA soccer when she signed her letter of intent on November 10. Her father, Gregg, mother, Lindsey, and brother, Knox, were by her side on signing day.

place to guide me exactly where I need to be.”

Logan admits that soccer is her way of relaxing, as well. “It is a relief for me to be able to put my boots on at the end of a long school day and just let it all go,” she said. “The thing I enjoy the most about soccer is the challenge. It will never get boring because not a single game will ever be the same. The chase to be the best or over analyzing film to be able to save that impossible ball is worth it. I enjoy testing my limits and seeing just how far I can go. The feeling of accomplishment after you finally do what you’ve been trying to for the last 15 minutes of your training session is worth every minute of the pain. Sure, I lose games or mess up, have a bad practice, or get second in a tournament, but there is never a moment when I am on the field that I want to leave.”

Logan credits her parents, specifically her mother, for all the opportunities she has been afforded thus far. “My mom is my best friend; we have been through so much together,” she said. “With my dad coaching Knox, and our seasons going on at the same time, it has really been mom and me through it all. Mom and dad both sacrifice so much to get both Knox and I where we need to be.

“There have been plenty of times when I wanted to quit and just give up, but mom comes every time to remind me of everything I want. In Texarkana, the options of clubs and opportunities are very slim. My mom has allowed me to have so many chances to get in front of important people, and she’s given so much time creating highlight videos, sending emails, signing me up for camps, researching soccer to help me learn, paying for lessons, and so much more. Having a mom like mine is truly a blessing, and I pray every day that other kids get to experience a love like I do.

“My mom pushes me to be a better person, student, and athlete,” Logan said. “She never gives up on me and has my back through anything. She has taught me that I am not defined by my athletic abilities, but I am who I am because of my abilities.” Pretty powerful

words from a 17-year-old girl.

As Logan looks ahead to her time at SFA, she is most excited about the opportunities on the field. She will compete for the position of goalie for the Ladyjacks. “I am excited to play soccer and it be a job instead of just for fun,” she said. “The levels of competition will rise, and I can’t wait for the relationships I will build.”

Ultimately, Logan’s immediate goals include beating out a senior for her spot on the field. Eventually, she hopes to make a career out of soccer. “My career goals are to move on after the collegiate level and play professionally,” she said. “One day, maybe I will play for the national team! I have no idea where I will end up, it all just depends on what comes of college, and what feels right at the time.”

For now, the next step for Logan is Nacogdoches, and a few big changes soon. “I will miss my family,” Logan said. “My whole life has been here and everything I have is rooted here. My people are here, and so it will be weird at first learning to live out of my typical routine but I don’t think I will have a problem adjusting. I am going to miss my goodnight and good morning hugs from mom and dad. I’m going to miss taking my little brother to school. I’m going to miss getting asked how school was when my parents get home from work. I’m going to miss family nights piled up in the living room and spending countless hours at Redbone with my grandparents. I am going to miss the back road trips and late night ice cream runs with my best friend. I’m going to miss nail dates and lunch with my grandma on Saturdays. I am really going to miss the car rides with my mom to games and practice. But there is an end to everything and mine just came a bit shorter than the rest. It is a part of sacrificing to chase your dreams, and I couldn’t be more grateful for this town and all of the things it has brought me.”

AFTER BEING IN A TRAGIC MOTOR

VEHICLE ACCIDENT, JENNIFER

TUGGLE COUNTS HER BLESSINGS AND MOVES FORWARD WITH HOPE

by

photo RHETT TUGGLE

IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE

Jennifer Tuggle knows firsthand what it’s like for life to change in the blink of an eye. Her fighting spirit to overcome a tragic auto accident is an inspiration to others. She candidly shares her story which is filled with hope and renewed faith in living life to the fullest. She is eager to begin the new year with a stronger body, spirit, and heart. She will marry her fiancé, Mike Black, on April 2, 2022. They currently live in Marco Island, Florida.(Mike relocated from St. Louis, and Jennifer is from Texarkana.)

Jennifer was the owner of Texarkana Yoga, a business which she built up on her own over the years while compiling a loyal clientele. She and Mike have been together for two years, and their children actually introduced her. Jennifer’s daughter, Jordan Roy, is 22 and her soon to be stepsons are Ty and Troy. Mike’s wife passed away after they were married for 27

years. Jennifer feels like it was fate which brought them together as that was also during a time when everyone’s lives were about to change. The onset and subsequent pandemic severely affected her business. Unable to practice yoga except virtually, Jennifer made the difficult decision to sell the studio. Being a native of Texarkana, she admits it was hard to leave the area she called home but knew that it was time for a fresh start.

Jennifer was happily adjusting to her new home in the Sunshine State and acclimating to her passion of practicing yoga when her accident occurred. It was on June 21, 2021, shortly after her move in May. She was driving into Naples for a yoga class when she was completely blindsided by another vehicle. She was airlifted to a Ft. Myers trauma center and had to undergo a craniotomy for a brain bleed. In addition, she had broken

51 JANUARY 2022 fourstatesliving.com

her neck in four spots, had multiple pelvis fractures, and her right lower leg had compound breaks. Jennifer remained in a coma for 30 days.

Mike and Jennifer’s father, Rhett Tuggle, were constantly by her side. When she gained consciousness, she had complete paralysis on her left side. She was transferred to Brooks Rehabilitation Center in Jacksonville for 30 days. Here, she was bound to a wheelchair and undergoing extensive inpatient therapy. Her daughter and brother, Brian, were also by her side, and when she was able to return home, she had rigorous physical and occupational therapy five times a week.

Six months later, Jennifer is walking well and getting more movement and strength in her left side. One lingering effect of the accident is strabismus in her left eye for which she will have surgery in February. She is determined to get stronger and credits her recovery to faith and being in good physical shape. Her doctors told her how it was a miracle she had survived amidst all of her injuries. She credits her survival simply on “God’s grace.” She views the world so differently now, cherishing each day she can spend it with loved ones. She credits her family with her getting back on track both physically and mentally.

Jennifer’s education and background is in physical fitness. She studied Kinesiology at Louisiana Tech University, after which she focused on physical training and was a personal trainer but later found that her true passion was practicing yoga. She explains, “I was certified 25 years ago, and it’s been so important in my life. I was teaching at Texarkana Yoga and had an opportunity to buy it. I took a leap of faith, and I couldn’t be more proud of the business I built.” She shares how it was bittersweet to sell it and move away from Texarkana but focuses on her new life in Florida

During physical therapy at NCH Outpatient Rehab in Marco Island, Florida, on December 1, Jen works on balancing on one leg.

Jen’s first try at standing on one leg took place in August at Brooks Rehab in Jacksonville, Florida.

with so many positive and exciting opportunities on the horizon. She tries to never forget her ordeal and shares with others how important it is to be grateful for each day. “My hope is to show others to never give up hope. After 60 days of hospitalization, I came home with a mission: to show everyone that prayers, dedication, resilience, and the heart of a warrior can help you not just climb mountains but actually move them.”

After seven surgeries and extensive rehabilitation, Jennifer looks forward to getting stronger and returning to her yoga mat! Since she has always been a huge proponent of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, this continues to aid in her recovery. She is gaining endurance in her walking distance and taking small steps along her journey. “My goal is to start walking one mile at a time and increasing up to five miles eventually,” she says. “I’m already lifting weights at home, and my therapy sessions are no joke. I will teach again one day. It’s what my heart wants and needs. There is so much joy watching others grow and feel strong and healthy.”

Jennifer is grateful for her friends and family getting her through the many times when she felt like giving up. She recalls her friends and daughter assisting with her care so her dad could return home for brief visits. As for her long-term care, she focuses first and foremost on caring for her mind and body. Along the way she has a renewed interest in helping others and has some inspiring advice for those facing a new year after extreme difficulty. “With this new year ahead of us, I hope that people first practice self-love. The last couple of years have been tough for so many. Love yourself and your life enough to commit to taking care of both. Start small in your journey, and find something you enjoy – a simple walk in the morning or evening, maybe yoga, maybe group fitness training. And eventually maybe all of the above.”

In addition, her tragedy has helped her overall outlook on life. The new year is a good time to count one’s blessings. “My life changed in the blink of an eye, and I’ve learned so many lessons. Truly count your blessings and be grateful. Pray incessantly ... God hears you, and He draws near to the broken-hearted.” She’s eager to keep a positive attitude even though there are good days and tough ones. With a wedding on the horizon, that should be easy to do. Entering a new year after extreme challenges is a way to start fresh and new. Jennifer’s life in Florida is moving forward with hope. She concludes, “My new journey is just picking up steam, and I’m ready to check off my goals one day at a time. This is the year for beautiful things to happen in our lives. See yourself at your best and go for it! It’s never too late to start.”

A huge Ohio State Buckeyes’ fan, this photo was taken of Jen before her motor vehicle accident which changed her life. Before her accident, Jen and Mike enjoyed hiking the mountains of Breckenridge, Colorado. Mike and Jen went to Zapatas on his second trip to Texarkana during May 2020. On June 21, 2021, a comatose Jen was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, Florida.

Exquisite INTERIORS

BREATHTAKING. RUSTIC. DISTINCTIVE.

Located in Cass County, Running Buck Ranch is a dream come true for its owners, Toneia and James Sheets. This hidden jewel, situated on 200 acres, backs up to Atlanta State Park and approximately 2,000 acres of Corps land.

Originally home to the Caddo Indians in what is now Northeast Texas, the property was purchased by its previous owners and named the Running Buck Ranch. Oftentimes, on the northern boundary, Toneia and James can still find broken pieces of clay pottery where an old homestead used to be.

Toneia and James searched for years for the perfect place to build a ranch. James previously had the honor of volunteering for an organization that provided hunting trips for veterans and children with disabilities and terminal illnesses. This experience was life-changing for him so Toneia and the older kids joined him and became involved as well. After a few years assisting the nonprofit organization, the family dreamed of providing a similar experience to others if they were ever blessed enough to do so. Running Buck Ranch was purchased with not only a place in mind for their family to make memories but also to fulfill their dream of one day hosting accessible hunts for others to enjoy.

Since purchasing the home and land in February of 2019, the Sheets family has dug and stocked a 15-acre lake and started a herd of whitetail deer. Recently, they moved their son, Brayden, future daughter-in-law, Denver, and their children out to the ranch to help manage and oversee the daily duties of the ranch. A closeknit family who enjoys the great outdoors, Toneia and James’ hope is that all six of their kids and grandchildren will own homesteads on the ranch in the near future.

A sturdy and eye-catching custom-built wrought iron gate, designed by Toneia, greets guests turning into the driveway. Etched with deer, pine trees, and eagle silhouettes, the majestic gate not only secures the property but sets the tone for what lies beyond it.

At the end of the drive sits the stunning 3,000 square foot ranch style retreat. Nestled amongst many trees, the 4 bedroom, 2½ bath home is designed to perfection while mixing rustic décor with elegant design elements. Toneia’s knack for decorating comes alive inside the home. It is evident that this couple spends a lot of time looking for unusual vintage items for their place. Toneia’s decorating style combines James’ love of the outdoors with her love of antiques to create a cozy, yet unique home.

Coming through the entryway, guests immediately notice a beautiful 19th Century antique French hunter’s hutch that James gifted to Toneia for Mother’s Day. A unique antler chandelier hangs above this area, offering the perfect ambiance. To the left of the entryway sits the formal dining room. The brick red walls mix harmoniously with the animal prints, wood, and metals used throughout the space. A large lantern holds a round wooden sign that says, “Grateful. Thankful. Blessed.”

Creating unusual conversation pieces around every room is Toneia’s forte. The open living area showcases many whitetail deer that Toneia, James, and their kids harvested while hunting in Northern Michigan. A mounted full body whitetail deer stands below a photograph of James holding that same deer that he harvested while on a hunt. A replica of an antique wood burning stove is inset in the stone fireplace, while a large caribou mount

72 JANUARY 2022 fourstatesliving.com

is strategically placed above the mantle. A collection of spools and buttons in glass jars sits atop an old trunk exuding a vintage vibe. Exposed ceiling trusses add style to the living area, creating warmth and coziness while a windmill ceiling fan adds a trendy aesthetic.

The functional L-shaped kitchen features wood cabinets, stainless appliances, a gas burning cooktop, granite countertops, and an antler chandelier. The large island is the focal point of this area, complete with a hammered copper farmhouse sink and turquoise bar stools with cowhide accents.

Above a console table in the breakfast nook, a massive piece of driftwood surrounded by flowers and antlers, grabs everyone’s attention. The family name, Sheets, is spelled out in license plates above three windows. A vintage table features a cowhide table runner and six chairs that were built to resemble window shutters.

Textures and patterns complement each other in the luxurious master bedroom. Animal print bedding blends perfectly with the wood elements around the room. A piece of artwork clearly states Toneia and James’ motto: “The best things in life are the people we love, the places we’ve been, and the memories we’ve made along the way.” The attached master bath features granite countertops

and dual hammered copper lavatories. A large leather stool takes center stage while a beautiful antler chandelier hangs above it. A deer mount hangs above the freestanding copper tub, complete with a tiara on its head, a necklace around its neck, and angel wings on each side, adding a touch of whimsy to the space.

Having a secluded place that they can call “home” that is located not far from Texarkana is all that Toneia and James have ever wanted. They feel blessed that this sanctuary lends them the perfect opportunity to express their distinct personalities, gather with their family, and just get away from the hustle and bustle of life. Toneia loves the beautiful view of the lake from her kitchen while James enjoys the solitude of the country life. “I love how the home feels like a remote cabin in the woods,” he says. “I feel like I am a million miles away from civilization.”

Running Buck Ranch is a place where dreams come true, not only for Toneia and James but also for their family. In the fall of 2025, they plan to make another one of their dreams come true by hosting fun outdoor adventures for veterans and children with special needs. What better way to show gratitude for your blessings than by sharing them with others?

THE ROAD Tra veled less

Just northwest of Texarkana is a small town with a big future. Ladonia, Texas, will soon be one of the towns along Texas’ newest reservoir: Lake Ralph Hall. Ladonia is best known for being right along the North Sulphur River and a rock hounding hot spot. The popular fossil hunting area will be relocated as the lake nears completion in 2024.

Highpoint Treehouses is one of the first short-term rental places built in Ladonia. The “Air Castle,” as it has been named by owners Steve and Nancy, is two stories tall and over 1,200 square feet of living space. This tree house is extra special because shipping containers were used in the construction! Rather than laying them horizontally, these containers were flipped on their ends to create a “castle in the sky” experience. The entire tree house was built by the father and son team of engineers, and the results are something extra special. There are two “crow’s” nests, with the upper nest over 50 feet off the ground. The views of the surrounding forest are unparalleled. The home also boasts a charming kitchen, two bedrooms with views of the night sky, and a cozy living room with front row views of the wildlife inhabiting the surrounding trees. One of our favorites: the hot tub that also has treetop views. See if you can spot the yellow bicycle. You’ll know it when you see it.

Steve and Nancy have thought of everything to make this luxury tree house the ultimate getaway: three methods to make coffee (with a selection of coffees to choose from), a beautiful fire pit area,

a waterfall feature, outdoor grill space, trails through the property, and a game feeder complete with camera so you can watch the hogs come in at night. There is also a great selection of board games and plenty of movies stored on the DVR for a relaxing night in. We also enjoyed the welcome gift cookies from the local restaurant, Pig and Whistle. They were quite possibly the best cookies we’ve ever had.

Highpoint Treehouses has big plans for the future. The Air Castle is the first of several, including an event space that will be available for rent. Be sure to follow them on social media to watch their progress! When you visit, be sure to tell Chuckles and Big Red that we said hello!

Never afraid of a long drive, Nichole is a homeschooling mom to two and wife to Ryan. Coffee, always, and black please. You can probably find her scheming up their next road trip while

hiking in the woods. Experience-based learning and good books abound in their homeschool, as they chase the spark of curiosity where it wanders on the road less traveled.

A Pinch of Salt

Well, well, looks like we did survive Christmas this year after all. Hopefully those concoctions I gave you last month helped you navigate through all the people in your house. By the end of mine, I was just pouring things in a cup to keep me rolling. And man, what a time we had here at Silver Star with all the Christmas parties and caterings. Texarkana really showed their love with us last month, and we are so appreciative of it! Now we are into January, and that’s wedding planning month for many. You either have been engaged for a little while and have put it off until “the first of the year,” or you just got engaged around Christmas. And now you are ready to get started because you’re so excited that your better half finally asked after seven years! Either way, congratulations, you will all have a great wedding. Remember, it’s your day and not anyone else’s!

So, as we roll into the wedding planning month, you must first think about your bridal showers and what you need to provide. You can’t go wrong with a charcuterie board because you can make them as big or as small as you need. The perfect one serves about 15-20 people. These are great for bridal showers because it’s not a full meal. Then, of course, it serves well with mimosas!

• Cured meats

• Various cheeses

• Olives and nuts

• Fruit (pineapple, grapefruit, grapes, cherries, strawberries, blackberries)

• Crackers or small slices of bread (baguettes sliced and toasted in oven)

• Jelly or Jam

INSTRUCTIONS

To start, select your board size. This will give you a better idea of how much to purchase for your charcuterie board. Once you’ve decided on your board, place your cheeses around the board with a couple of cheese knives.

Garnish edges with fresh rosemary and thyme, if desired. Place some little plates and bowls around the board that you’ll use as a guide to help arrange your board. I space out my plates and bowls. Once your cheeses and dishes are set on board, start arranging your meats. Fold some of the meat for variety and fan out others flat on the board.

Add some of your fresh berries to the bowls/plates on your board. Add marinated olives, artichoke hearts and sweet peppers next. Start filling in spaces with dried fruit and nuts. If you’ve still got room, add sliced pickles, dill pickles and cucumbers. Fill in more spaces with nuts. Add mustard and honey then fill in with crackers arranging around the board.

Next is the rehearsal dinner that most forget about until about a month before the wedding. If you’re wanting to do it yourself, of course, BBQ is always the easiest to make. The best way to gauge how much meat you need is that women typically eat ½ lb. of meat and men eat 1 lb. or more.

BRISKET SLIDERS

– Thinly slice brisket.

– Slice Hawaiian buns in half, and layer the bottoms onto a baking sheet.

– Top with sliced Swiss cheese, and top with sliced brisket.

– Cover each sandwich with top buns.

– Serve with chips.
