this issue of the Texarkana City Guide, there is plenty to learn about, including places to explore, things to learn, and experiences of the best of Texarkana in two great states: Texas and Arkansas.
Texarkana, founded in 1873, prides itself on the uniqueness of being one great city saddled between two states. Beyond its iconic state line, Texarkana has a rich culture of music, art, and history, much of which you will find in the heart of our city: the downtown.
In downtown, you will find the beautiful Perot Theatre, which hosts nationally recognized performers and is home to the Texarkana Symphony Orchestra (TSO) and the Texarkana Community Ballet. The Arkansas Municipal Auditorium has a rich history of performers such as Elvis and Johnny Cash. There are three unique museums within the Texarkana Museums System, as well as a popular Antique (Four States) Auto Museum and the Texarkana Regional Arts Center. Fabulous art galleries, specialized retail spaces, delicious local restaurants, and an array of public art and murals are also among the attractions.

Numerous new living spaces are coming about, and ample outdoor fun is available for exploring and enjoying weekly events for the entire family.

There is always something going on in Texarkana lately. You’ll see it on the faces of people walking on our refinished trails at Spring Lake Park and perusing the new Walk Through History signs. You will notice it in the freshly painted murals all over downtown TXK, and you will hear it in the banging of hammers on construction sites of historically redeveloped and brand-new properties.
It’s the downtown Main Street Christmas parade drawing thousands of people, and the lovely springtime Twice as Fine Texarkana Wine Festival at Spring Lake Park. It’s the baseball tournaments and the soccer leagues, and the atmosphere of three college campuses in one town. There is optimism on the faces, beauty in the spaces, and promise around spaces in our city.

Texarkana Arkansas School District (TASD) has provided excellent educational opportunities since 1884. TASD, home of the Razorbacks, opened a new, state-of-the-art middle school and offers five magnet elementary schools with the newest being the Harmony Leadership Academy with a music infused-curriculum, and the North Heights Community School with an accelerated curriculum with an emphasis on project-based instruction. Through a partnership with UAHT, Arkansas High School offers tuition-free college classes with the potential to earn an associate degree through the Collegiate Academy.
The University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana is expanding the Texarkana campus with its latest addition of a workforce center. UAHT offers quality two-year degrees and a number of career and technical courses including welding, CNA, general health, coding, and industrial technology. Students receive a certification upon course completion.
The Texarkana Regional Airport is located in Texarkana, Arkansas. The airport just opened a state-of-the-art terminal to better meet air travel needs of our community. Texarkana, Arkansas, has also opened a community recreational center to add to our quality-of-life amenities.
While the Twin City uniqueness draws attention for family fun, we work diligently on economic development opportunities for our city, county, and region. Welcome to the Texarkana City Guide Magazine, your source for our Twin Cities’ information! Here you will find both Texarkana, Texas, and Texarkana, Arkansas, resources for a wide spectrum of programs and services, entertainment, and much, much more. One of the first things people notice while visiting Downtown Texarkana are many original old buildings. Instead of tearing them down and starting over, we have chosen to preserve the beginnings and invest in renewal of the cities’ origin (1873) using the National Main Street Four Point Approach™. Downtown is where Texarkana all began; activities and businesses stayed bustling in downtown until the urban sprawl of the 1950s and 1960s as well as the malls of the 1980s. In the last decade, though, there has been a resurgence of interest in the history, architecture, and beauty of a well-planned and revitalized downtown Texarkana. Main Street Texarkana actively supports preserving and re-purposing the past while leading a charge into a brighter and economically stronger future!
Texarkana – Texas and Arkansas – grew from humble buildings around the railroads into towering structures of commerce and industry. The buildings that still remain boast visible architectural embellishments, and some façades have been returned to their early 20th century appearance. Even a few of the “aluminum façades” of the ’50s are now historic.
Drive down I-30, and you could be in any city in the country. However, if you get off at State Line Avenue and drive south for a few miles, you will drive into Historic Downtown Texarkana with its one-of-a-kind U.S. Federal Courthouse and Downtown Post Office – the second-most photographed federal building in the country (second only to the Supreme Court). A must-do for any visitor is to stand in two states at the same time. How often can you say you have one foot in Arkansas and the other in Texas?
While you are downtown, you should check out several true historical treasures: the Perot Theatre, a 1924 fully-restored performing arts jewel; and the Re-
gional Arts Center, the original location of the U.S. Federal Courthouse, developed by the Texarkana Regional Arts & Humanities Council into a premier art gallery, with the Women for the Arts “For Arts’ Sake” Gift Shop. A great piece of history, the Arkansas Municipal Auditorium was built as a multi-purpose center in 1928, and Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley played there. The Four States Auto Museum and its rotating selection of vintage vehicles is a tourist and local favorite, hosting group tours and annual car shows.
The Museum of Regional History is the oldest brick building in Texarkana, now owned and preserved with regional artifacts by the Texarkana Museums System (and a genealogist’s dream). The one-of-a-kind Draughon/Moore Ace of Clubs House is a site to see; built from the winnings of a card game, according to legend, the house is shaped like a club from a deck of playing cards. The Patrick J. Ahern House represents the best example of the Classical Revival style and is also part of the Museums System. The preservation of the house has allowed it to remain much as it was in 1905.
Other historical elements can be found outside of the museums. A multitude of beautiful historic churches, homes, and monuments make downtown walks perfect for any day. Broad Street offers something for everyone with retail shops, restaurants, and a multitude of wonderful “self-care” salons that offer relaxing experiences anytime you desire! Front Street Festival Plaza is the perfect location for outdoor special events, including food fests, music concerts, art shows, and parades including the ever-growing Main Street Christmas Parade.
For play, check out our parks downtown: Kidtopia and Skatetopia for youngsters (of all ages), the ever-changing
ArtSpark, and the Kress Gap, full of locally-painted murals. The Scott Joplin mural, representing the Ragtime genius and Pulitzer Prize winner who hailed from Texarkana, is displayed across from the Perot Theatre. A beautiful mural painted on the side of TLC Burgers and Fries at East Broad and Olive Streets resembles a vintage Dr. Pepper advertisement and features a portrait of Corinne Griffith, the silent-era movie star of
the 1920s who was born in Texarkana. Numerous new murals throughout the area make great stops for memorable photos of fun. For the athletes, check out Southern Athletic Baseball Academy, located on Texas Boulevard, offering an elite baseball training facility, and Wacha Resolution, a new specialized workout facility.
For shopping, there is truly something for everyone in downtown Texarkana! With some of the oldest continuously operating businesses in town – Ragland Piano Co.; GQ Look men’s store; and Logan Electric, a lighting fixture retailer that has been located in the same block of downtown for over 100 years and houses unique fixtures, lamps, and fans that you won’t find elsewhere – the personal service can’t be beat.
Living in downtown Texarkana is easy ... with its beautiful (plus some funky) loft apartments. With historic building projects ongoing, there will soon be more living spaces in the former Texarkana National Bank building, the Hotel Grim, and

2nd floor lofts. Attorneys, engineers, realty companies, banks, architects, CPAs, auto repair shops, insurance agencies, employment agencies, and specialty stores have found that working and living downtown is convenient with friendly faces around every day. On weekends, it’s not out of the ordinary to see races, walks, bicycling, festivals, car shows, and parades, all within the entertainment districts.
The Silvermoon on Broad is a multi-million-dollar events complex including a state-of-the-art theatre/conference space that saved almost an entire block of historic structures with loft apartments on the upper floors. Silvermoon Children’s Theatre camps and productions are hosted at this complex regularly. Crossties Event & Wedding Venue offers a multi-level event venue that hosts concerts/events and provides space for most crowds.
The Texarkana Gazette, the Texarkana Public Library, Wadley Regional Medical Center, and UAMS’s Texarkana All For Kids Pediatric Clinic are part of the downtown fabric, as well as both city halls. Of course, there’s the massive Bi-State Justice Center with law enforcement and courts representing both sides of Texarkana, too. The Texarkana Chamber of Commerce can be found on State Line Avenue, just before you get to the U.S. Federal Courthouse. The historic Miller County Courthouse is a few blocks from that on Laurel Street.

Arts enthusiasts, history buffs, and entertainment aficionados will enjoy the diverse cultural offerings Texarkana provides for its citizens and guests. Whether visiting for a day or coming downtown after the sun sets, there are activities for the entire family to enjoy.
The ArtsPark, located at the corner of West 4th and Main Street in downtown Texarkana, is a public green space and art park. The center of the landscaped area boasts a timeline of historical events and era-appropriate items that trace the history of Texarkana from the Caddo Indian era, 1000 B.C., up to 2003. Students from area schools selected events from different eras for the timeline. In the front stands a 140-foot mosaic strip created by artist Sheila Keever with the assistance of children participating in TRAHC’s “Color Texarkana” program. The lengthy mosaic depicts recognizable aspects and buildings that are unique to the Twin Cities. The park is a popular space for photographs and picnics.
The ArtWall, TRAHC’s unique outdoor exhibit space, featuring 44 large-scale paintings, changes its exhibits quarterly. The ArtWall curves from the ArtsPark, skips over an alley, and ends on the side of the Regional Arts Center. Area students and nonprofit organizations create the colorful artwork displayed on large weatherproof panels. The ArtsPark project was made possible through generous donations from Alcoa.
The breathtaking Horace C. Cabe Great Hall, located at the Regional Arts Center, is the perfect rental facility for weddings, receptions, reunions, business seminars, press conferences, celebration parties, and other special events! Over 100 years old, the architecture and significant history are irreplaceable. From the historic copper elevator to the golden eagle that once presided in the building’s former life as a federal courthouse, the rich heritage of the building is felt from the moment you walk in the doors.
Located deep within the heart of downtown Texarkana in the Arkansas Entertainment District sits Crossties Event & Wedding Venue. Originally built in the early 1900s, the venue has been completely restored while keeping its historic charm. A multi-level event venue, Crossties has hosted many weddings, receptions, birthday parties, reunions, and many popular entertainers, including Neal McCoy, Clay Walker, Granger Smith, Buckcherry, and Hinder. Located at 420 Pine Street, the Ace of Clubs House was built in 1885 by a native Tennessean, James Harris Draughon. The
house is in the shape of a club and mimics the playing card form. The Italianate Victorian three-story home has a rectangular wing, three octagonal wings, a 20-foot cupola, and a spiral staircase. The home was only owned by three separate families before being donated to the Texarkana Museums System. Final owner Mrs. Olivia Smith Moore’s vast collection of Neiman Marcus shoes are displayed in the home. Currently closed for renovations, look for them to reopen in 2024. (www.texarkanamuseums.org)
Located at 217 Laurel Street in Texarkana, Arkansas, this museum preserves our automotive heritage. The museum was founded to preserve, collect, exhibit, operate, and interpret a collection of antique automobiles and auto-related historical artifacts, which includes many documents and photographs. The Gallery at 1894 is housed in a National Historic Registered building in downtown Texarkana at 105 Olive Street. With more than 12,000 square feet of art, The Gallery at 1894 represents over 90 artists and authors, most of whom are local. Visitors from all 50 states along with those from many other countries purchase a variety of artistic art forms such as paintings, ceramics, glass, and photography. (www.1894gallery.com)
Looking for a unique, one-of-a-kind piece of fine art? Then visit Joseph Raymond Fine Art, located in downtown Texarkana, on East Broad Street. From contemporary statement pieces to modern landscapes, Joseph’s passion is creating custom pieces of art to enhance every client’s desires.
Beautiful murals grace the walls where the Kress Department Store once stood on Broad Street in downtown Texarkana. Local artists and muralists added their own creative flair to the project, and the Kress Gap has become a very popular backdrop for taking photographs.

Texarkana’s first museum houses a variety of historical collections depicting the history of the region from the time of the Caddo Indians through the founding of Texarkana and beyond. It is housed in Texarkana’s oldest remaining brick building. Interactive
For live music, Texarkana hosts well-known artists, as well as many local bands that play parties, weddings, events, restaurants, and bars. Following are a few of the venues that often showcase live music on the weekends:
exhibits explore the musical history of the region and tell the story of native son Scott Joplin, the “King of Ragtime.” The Museum of Regional History is also the home of the Wilbur Smith Research Archive and is located at 219 North State Line Avenue.

The P. J. Ahern Home, located at 403 Laurel Street, Texarkana, Arkansas, is a classical revival-style mansion, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is part of the Texarkana Museums System. Patrick J. Ahern, original owner of the home, owned an early retail dry-goods business and was a full partner in the O’Dwyer and Ahern Dry Goods Store. (www.texarkanamuseums.org)
Built in 1924 as the Saenger Amusement Theatre’s “Gateway to the West,” the Perot Theatre is a landmark and continues to attract tourists to downtown Texarkana. Purchased and fully restored by the City of Texarkana, Texas, in 1979-80, the building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and features gold leaf, scenes and designs on the ceiling and walls created by hand, original marble floors, and more. Texarkana natives H. Ross Perot and his sister, Bette, through the Perot Foundation, contributed the final funds needed to complete the restoration; in recognition of this contribution, the Texarkana Texas City Council renamed the building the Perot Theatre. The Perot Theatre is the home theatre of the Texarkana Symphony Orchestra, Texarkana Community Ballet, and Texarkana Regional Arts & Humanities Council, and also hosts dance recitals, community events, and other production opportunities. Tours of the Perot Theatre are provided Monday - Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tours for large groups can be held after hours or weekends if schedules permit. Call 903-792-4992 for more information. The building now known as the Regional Arts Center opened in 1911 as Texarkana’s first Federal District Courthouse. Bowie County acquired it in 1933 and made Texarkana Regional Arts & Humanities Council, Inc. (TRAHC) the new lessee in 1985. Extensive renovations uncovered the early-century architecture and made them available to the public in 1992. The Regional Arts
Center presents free, year-round art exhibits, offers rental space for special events and meetings, provides a unique shopping experience at For Arts’ Sake Gift Shop, and houses offices for TRAHC’s administration and ArtsSmart staff. Tour the latest exhibit, enjoy the latest performance by regional and national artists, or come to a stellar event put on by TRAHC at the historic Regional Arts Center. (www.trahc.org)
Located on the south wall of the building at 311 Main Street, the Scott Joplin Mural pays tribute to the “King of Ragtime.” Joplin was born November 24, 1868, near what would later become Texarkana. (Texarkana was not established until 1873, but there were people living in the immediate area.) The family lived in the 600 block of Hazel Street during his childhood. This unique landmark, which was completely updated in 2015 by local artist Arthur Pletcher, depicts the life and accomplishments of Scott Joplin, a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer.
Silvermoon Children’s Theatre began in 2014 to provide entertaining, professional-quality theatre, performed by children for audiences of all ages. They educate, challenge, and inspire youth, support the learning environment, and build strong community values by encompassing all aspects of theatre, both technical and artistic. The group produces three main stage shows per calendar year and offers other fun opportunities for area kids, including acting classes, “mini shows,” “turbo days,” and “drama camps.” (www.silvermoonkids.com)
The Silvermoon on Broad is a beautiful event venue developed in four historic buildings in downtown Texarkana on West Broad Street. Its unique and adaptable facility offers multiple spaces that can be mixed and matched for most any occasion, including receptions, performances, meetings, dinners, weddings, and fundraisers. Formed in 1990, Texarkana Repertory Company, Inc. is a nonprofit community theatre group that uses area talent in all aspects of its productions, on and off the stage. Tex*Rep performs a full season of four shows each year. Several memorable shows include: Legally Blonde, Grease, The Secret Garden, Proof, Steel
Magnolias, Charlotte’s Web, A Christmas Carol, Nunsense, Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid, Mamma Mia!, The Odd Couple, and Young Frankenstein. Some shows are done in collaboration with Texarkana College’s Department of Drama. (www.texrep.org)
Texarkana Community Ballet brings together the very best of the region’s classically-trained dancers for annual ballet performances. Texarkana Community Ballet holds company auditions each August, and performances of The Nutcracker are held each December in the historic Perot Theatre in downtown Texarkana. Its mission is to educate dancers and audiences in the art of classical ballet.
TEXARKANA PUBLIC LIBRARY
The Texarkana Public Library is located at 600 West Third Street, providing free services to all residents living within the city limits of Texarkana, Arkansas, and Texarkana, Texas. The library has over 100,000 materials available for check-out including books, CDs, videos, DVDs, magazines, and downloadable audio books. Patrons can also utilize print and electronic reference resources, access the Internet, check out a laptop in-house, enjoy free Wi-Fi service, make copies, send a fax, participate in computer and internet training, or attend a library event. TEXARKANA
The Texarkana Regional Chorale (TRC), under the direction of conductor Marc-André Bougie, is the premiere large choral ensemble of the Ark-La- Tex. TRC includes participants from a variety of backgrounds, and the group performs regularly in a number of regional, national, and international venues. Its repertoire ranges from classical to Broadway, gospel, and patriotic music. For more information, email txkregionalchorale@gmail.com.
The Texarkana Symphony Orchestra (TSO) is a professional symphony orchestra, dedicated to bringing great symphonic music to the Texarkana area. Performing primarily in the beautiful, historic Perot Theatre, TSO presents a series of classical masterworks, symphonic pops, and educational concerts during its September–May season. The 18-hole course at the New Haven Golf Club facility in Texarkana, Arkansas, features 6,518 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 71. Designed by John Rickman, the New Haven Golf Club was completed in 1991. With a newly renovated lake and the installation of playground equipment and lights at the ball fields and sports complex, Spring Lake Park is the heart and pride of the Texarkana Parks & Recreation program. The 145-acre park features a spring-fed lake, open green spaces with picnic areas, playground units, fishing piers, and an 18-hole disc golf course. Spring Lake Park also includes the Swanger Sports Complex, home of the Texarkana Texas Dixie Baseball League, and George Dobson Field, home to the Texas A&M-Texarkana Eagles. Painters, sculptors, musicians, seamstresses, you name it. Artists of all mediums fill the streets of Downtown Texarkana on the second Friday of each month. Called Downtown Live!, this event lasts from 6-9 p.m., mostly along Broad Street. On the sidewalks, artists create art out in the open for all to see and maybe even purchase. Walking down the street, you not only see art but smell delicious food saturating the air. To make the event even better, there is live music from different local musicians each month.
Downtown Live! was initiated and is supported by community members Ina McDowell and Joseph Raymond among many others. “Downtown Live! began as an opportunity to showcase our local talent with the gathering of artists on Broad Street. It now serves as a showcase for our downtown retail, local restaurants, and beautiful historic landscape that can only be seen in our downtown area,” Ina says. As several buildings have been restored, like the famous Hotel Grim, these structures provide an all-too-fitting backdrop for such an event where people can admire the architectural work in the historic Entertainment District.
With the large number of people filling the downtown area, it becomes congested really quickly everywhere. This means parking can be rather difficult and getting a table at a restaurant like Verona for example can lead to a rather long wait. To counteract this, there is plenty to walk around and see in the meantime.
During the event, local businesses open their doors to artists from the area, giving exposure to the artists and strengthening community bonds. Local businesses like Silvermoon on Broad and the Joseph Raymond Fine Art Gallery host local artists for all to come and visit during the event. On top of just watching the artistic process, visitors can interact with the artists. “Families love the chance to watch artists work and be able to ask questions about their work. The artists love being able to talk about their work in a casual setting,” Ina said.
In the Joseph Raymond Fine Art Gallery, there is a variety of different artists, but there are always new pieces and features with the event. These shared spaces give room for art and other attractions. “There is live music, public art, bike tours, pop-up artists, gallery openings, and tours of the buildings. We’ve even had the author Karla Moore introduce her new mystery, The Hotel Grim, with a book signing,” Ina says.

Story of Art in America” was recently released on Prime Video and other streaming platforms and features four of our local artists, Chris Thomas, Cindy Holmes, Dr. Charlotte Hueter, and Jerome LeGrand. Award-winning New York production company, Legit Productions, selected and interviewed them along with Kay Thomas and Jamie Simmons. The Patterson-Troike Foundation and Main Street Texarkana made the production possible and provided another avenue for our great local talent to be featured. (Not pictured is Jerome LeGrand)
Over the years, Downtown Texarkana was almost forgotten by the majority. In response now, many are constantly working to restore the once bustling downtown Texarkana to its past self. Events like Downtown Live! work to include as many members of the community as possible, while also bringing in outside talent along the way. “I believe we may have discovered some aspiring new artists while continuing to add new professional artists with each monthly event,” Ina says. Downtown Live! is building a community within Texarkana through art. As each month passes with a new event, more people attend and learn.
“There is talent in all of us, and Downtown Live! brings many forms of art. You just might discover the artist in you by attending the event and seeing the many forms of art,” Ina concludes.

The Temple Memorial Pediatric Center hosts its annual gala, “Dancing with Our Stars,” each year. The third annual James Black’s Bowie Heritage Festival will take place in spring 2025, in Historic Washington State Park. This event celebrates James Black, the bladesmith who forged the first Bowie knife for Jim Bowie. World-renowned bladesmiths will be on-hand during the event. The Junior League of Texarkana will host the 37th annual Mistletoe Market November 22-24, 2024, at the Texarkana Arkansas Convention Center. Known as the event that kicks off Christmas shopping for many in the community, this unique fundraiser celebrates the holiday season with local vendors, delicious food, lively entertainment, and fun for all ages.
One of the main attractions of the Mistletoe Market is the Children’s Events area, where families can take photos, make crafts, hear a story, or have breakfast with Santa Claus. While the market is an amazing event, its impact lasts much longer than one weekend. As the Junior League of Texarkana’s largest fundraiser, it provides substantial contributions for numerous philanthropic projects and community assistance grants. Over the past 15 years, over 7,100 runners from 35 states have come to downtown Texarkana, USA, to compete in what has become the largest half marathon in Southwest Arkansas – the Run the Line Half Marathon. The 17th annual race, set for February of 2024, starts in downtown Texarkana, Texas, and goes through the Twin Cities’ parks, trails, and streets to finish in downtown Texarkana, Arkansas, on a USATF-certified 13.1-mile course. Residents are encouraged to cheer the runners along the course. The weekend event includes two-person and four-person relay
teams in the half marathon and the Kids Run the Line Too. The events benefit the Partnership for the Pathway, an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to building a safe pedestrian and bicycle trail system in the Texarkana area.
Caddo Area Council Boy Scouts of America will hold Scout-O-Rama at Spring Lake Park in spring 2025.
