Bipartisan Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Caucus

Dear Diversity in Tech Summit Attendees, On behalf of the Bipartisan Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Caucus, it is our honor to welcome you to the fifth annual Diversity in Technology Summit! Your attendance demonstrates your steadfast dedication to the wellness of these institutions and the strength of our workforce.

We extend special thanks to our host institution, the Virginia Union University (VUU). Virginia Union University is renowned for its innovative approaches to academic research and work to incorporate new and emerging technologies into their academic offerings. We also want to thank our institutional and corporate partners for their time and dedicated work to produce our first hybrid Summit.

We believe that this convening is needed now more than ever, as students, institutions, and corporate employers alike navigate the impacts of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Since 2015, the more than 100-member Bipartisan HBCU Caucus has elevated the national discourse around the unique needs of HBCUs and increased federal investment to help level the playing fields for our schools. This advocacy has been geared towards strengthening HBCUs as preparatory centers for today’s STEM workforce. HBCUs, while representing less than 3% of colleges and universities in the country, graduate more than 42% of the nation’s African American engineers, scientists, and mathematicians.

Further, they contribute more than $15 billion, annually, to our economy, and provide pathways of opportunity to millions of students nationwide.

This summit will not only show off this remarkable talent pool, but it will coalesce vital input from HBCU representatives, students, and leading tech companies. Through the Diversity in Tech Summit, we hope to strengthen the relationships between government, industry, and HBCUs in order to create more strategic and sustainable partnerships. This convening will allow us to better understand each other so that we can address our common goals of diversifying our nation’s workforce and ensuring that all Americans have equitable access to opportunity.

We hope that you and your organization are enriched by these conversations and that we work together to ignite lasting partnerships, better support our students in pursuit of 21st century careers and build a more inclusive workforce.

Thank you to the Honorable Glen Youngkin, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, for your visit and participation. A special thank you to the Congressional Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Caucus and Congresswoman Alma Adams (D-NC-12), founder and cochair of the caucus, for your leadership in uplifting the work of HBCUs. I am excited that this summit is being held on our campus where you can see and feel the excellence in education and preparation for our future global leaders. There is no greater place than an HBCU campus to come together, collectively, to address and ultimately improve the representation of African Americans and people of color, including women of color, in the tech sector. Throughout the discussions, you will have the opportunity to hear directly from the presidents of our beloved Virginia HBCUs about how we can connect, partner, mentor, and grow representation by teaming up with private sector companies and government leaders. You will also hear from students who represent the skill, tenacity, and drive of our HBCU students who are preparing to enter the field of technology. They are hungry for opportunity, internships, and careers within your company.
